Transformers: War for Cybertron is series of video games published by Activision and developed by High Moon Studios, Next Level Games and Vicarious Visions, set before the Transformers take their war to Earth. Hasbro intends it to act as a foundation for Transformers franchise storylines for years to come, and so they've been giving a lot of input and stressing character development. The book Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron serves as a storyline lead-in to the events of the game.
Transformer references
* Steve Blum does his best Victor Caroli impression for his role of the narrator.
* A variety of callbacks to The Transformers: The Movie:
** Ironhide greets the space slug with the universal greeting, to Warpath's confusion.
** In the Kaon prison, an Autobot is pronounced guilty and pushed off a gantry into a pit. He responds with "Spare me this mockery of justice!", quoting Kranix during his trial on Quintessa.
** Rumble repeats another line from the movie: "First we crack the shell, then we crack the nuts inside!"
** When Starscream declares himself as Decepticon leader, Megatron retorts that "[he] still function[s]."
* The Punch of Kill Everything is a multiplayer Leader Class ability and a Soldier class upgrade.
* When Skywarp calls Thundercracker ugly he replies that they look the same. Hmmm.
* Stan Bush's 2007 theme song, "Till All Are One (Transformers Theme)" is used in the credits, and the special thanks describe the families that were involved "rock like Stan Bush".
* Air Raid pokes fun at Silverbolt's fear of heights.
* The in-game menu for stat tracking and leaderboards is called Teletraan 1.
* When Ironhide asks Optimus how he knows Megatron, Optimus replies that it is a story for another time.
*Pretty much all the Achievement/Trophy names are references to other parts of Transformers history, mostly G1.
** The ones for completing the campaign chapters include Dark Awakening, Starscream's Brigade, A Prime Problem, The Last Prime, You Got The Touch, The War Within, and Till All Are One.
** Gameplay names include Thief in the Night, Fire in the Sky, Chaos Bringer, Motormaster!, Devastator!, Brute-a-kiss!, Slugfest, Powerglide Performer, First we crack the shell..., Blast-a-rachnia and Ramhorn.
* Autobots and Decepticons alike are heard to swear by 'Primus', confirming his 'existence'.
* Trypticon has a 'conversion cog' that controls his transformation, and is probably a less 'branded' term for G1's transformation cog.
* The energon cubes bear strong resemblance to the Allspark cube.

Toy tie-ins
Hasbro has confirmed that several toys will be made to tie into the promotion of the video game. These include figures of Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Megatron and Soundwave. At Toy Fair 2010, they were confirmed to be part of the Generations toyline. At 2010 they said they would like to make more, and that Starscream (and likely other Seekers) are at the top of the list if they decide to produce more figures from the game.
Fiction
Comic adaptation
IDW Publishing is bringing out a comic based on the game. News of this first got leaked when Australian website JB Hi-Fi offered a free copy of issue 1 if you pre-ordered the game from them. Later, it was available for those that purchased either the PS3 or Xbox versions of the game at Sears or Kmart in America. The story is a partial adaptation of the Exodus book.

The cover artist is revealed to be Marcelo Matere, who updated his DeviantArt gallery with the inked version, with Priscilla Tramontano as colorist. Alex Irvine and Don Figueroa are writing and drawing, respectively.

Operation Transmission Recovery
As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips/images" to you and me).

There are two dials, blue (outer) and yellow (inner). Using your mouse, you can drag the dial to set coordinates. The blue dial is set by aligning it to marks on the outer circle. When aligned, it becomes a blue ring. After that, the yellow dial is set so that signal strength is full, as indicated by a meter on the right. Once a transmission is unlocked its symbol lights up and the "Total Recovered" amount increases a little bit. When you reach 100%, it tells you how many hours remain until next batch.

As of January 12, 2010, the following transmissions (Batch 9), almost all of which are part of the second trailer (link below), were available:

Seismic-shock warheads are Cybertronian weapons. One single warhead has the power to blow up an entire planet.

Fiction
Dreamwave Energon comics
During the war, Ironhide was captured by the Decepticons and forced to built seismic-shock warheads for them. He did, but when the warhead designs were verified, the Decepticons left Ironhide alone to design and implement the bunker casements. It was through that that he could retake the Decepticons' advantage. By equipping the doomsday bunkers with echo cavity, a tritanium-lined resonant space that could redirect the shockwaves to pulverize the warhead on a subatomic level, if the warheads would ever be activated, they would have no effect on their surroundings.

The bunkers were code-locked for sound; only a specific combination of tones could grant access to the warheads. Megatron had the warheads installed in and around key extraction points, so that if the war would not go his way, he could initiate Cybertron's destruction while getting himself and his troops underway to set up base on another planet. Evidently, he never got to doing that.

Ten years after the war, Ironhide was temporarily forced back into servitude by Tidal Wave, who wanted him to help excavate one of the doomsday bunkers to obtain a warhead for Scorponok. Ironhide led him to a spaceport nearby where one of them was stored and uncovered it with the appropriate tonal key. As this happened, Tidal Wave revealed that Scorponok intended to blow up Earth to get to its Energon. Ironhide faked to comply to remove the warhead from the rest of the structure, but instead activated the warhead, declaring to Tidal Wave he'd rather blow up Cybertron than be responsible for the deaths of innocents. Tidal Wave in return declared him an idiot and left quickly through a portal. At that point, Jetfire appeared and Ironhide explained him why he didn't need to worry.

Some time later, Ironhide relayed the entire story to both Jetfire and Rodimus. When they asked him why he didn't return sooner to destroy the warheads if he had designed them to be harmless, Ironhide admitted he felt ashamed of cooperating with the Decepticons and that he feared his Autobot colleagues wouldn't trust him anymore if they knew. To that, he added he realized now that secrecy wouldn't do any good and that he would no longer hide from the consequences of his deeds. Jetfire commended him for this. Aftershock (issue)

That ripple in your glass of water isn't a Tyrannosaurus rex, it's a Destroyer, the largest and most powerful soldier unit in either faction's army. Standing somewhere between Megatron and Omega Supreme in terms of mass, Destroyers usually start out in their gigantic tank modes, and transform into robot mode after their weakness—the rear-mounted conversion cog—is exploited. In Robot mode, they will activate an EMP pulse to soften you and then melt you with a continuous laser beam. As they take damage, portions of their armor will fall off. Robot-mode Destroyers have no particular weakness: just blast away and pray!

Games
During the fall of Iacon, a lone Autobot Destroyer was the final line of defense between the Decepticons and the Iacon vaults where Sentinel Zeta Prime had taken refuge. Despite intimidating the Decepticons with his sheer size and massive firepower, under Megatron (Prime)'s leadership he was overcome.

Another Destroyer battled against the Decepticons during Omega Supreme's counterattack, backed up by a squad of Autobots and several auto-repair turrets. At least one other Destroyer was present during the height of the battle, fighting against Decepticons under Starscream's command. Megatron led a small team and defeated yet another Destroyer in the towers above Iacon, taking control of the turrets there and using them to down Omega.

Megatron was apparently impressed by these behemoths, as Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Warpath faced one during their rescue of Omega Supreme. They weakened it, and Omega proceeded to tear the unlucky Decepticon clean in half. Two more Destroyers attempted to halt Optimus' journey to Cybertron's core: one falling to his death after the bridge he was standing on was shot to pieces and the other receiving a massive headache when the Autobots dropped a stalagmite on him while he was attempting to attack a space slug.

Two more Destroyers were stationed on Trypticon Station and fought against the crack Aerialbot team that broke in to disable the station. Despite being backed up by Decepticon forces (includng several Seekers) and trying to cover each other to offset their weaknesses, the Aerialbot commando team defeated them both.

Weapons
Soldiers can equip two of these four weapons:
*Neutron assault rifle
*X12 Scrapmaker
*EMP shotgun
They use energon hammers in melee and carry flak grenades.

Abilities
Soldiers can eventually choose two from four different abilities:
Killstreaks
After killing enough guys without dying, every class can use special abilities. The soldiers' are:
*Ammo Matrix (3 kills): Locks your ammo clip and refills team's ammo/grenades.
*Electromagnetic pulse (5 kills): Jams enemy's abilities for a while.
