Shelfwarmers in Generation 1
Due to significant differences in the toy industry and fandom over three decades, it can be hard to demonstrate which toys were warming shelves in the 1980s. Unlike the modern era, it was very common to keep popular characters in case assortments for months or years on end without any changes. Starscream could still be found in large quantities through 1986, but this was because his toy still got shipped throughout that period (and being Starscream, still got sold). However, the Jumpstarters were both over-produced and, as non-show characters, in such low demand that pretty much to this day you can find mint in sealed box specimens for $20 or so.
Shelfwarmers in Beast Wars
Beast Wars, as the first Transformers toyline to be released after Internet access became widespread, was the first to really introduce collectors to the concept of shelfwarming. Toys that were noted for their abnormally high shelfwarming capacity in Beast Wars included Injector, Scavenger, Transquito, and even show character Inferno. It was not uncommon to see store pegboards that were entirely Injector, and there were reports of Transquito-s still being on shelves seven years after the initial release. Now that's a shelfwarmer.

In the United Kingdom, both Cybershark and Claw Jaw struggled to sell due to being packed several per case in multiple waves and not featuring in the TV show.
[[Image:ShelwarmerTRUWheelie.jpg|thumb|150px|left|The same German TRU store as in the photo above, two years later. Generations? Hunt for the Decepticons? Why, buy ROTF Wheelie instead!
Each series has had its own notorious shelfwarmers. In North America, Armada clogged shelves with flocks of Laserbeaks and fleets of Smokescreens. Energon made sure there was no shortage of Ironhide. Cybertron gave us unmoving armies of Mudflaps, who often stayed on the shelf long enough to sit beside their redeco, the first movie Mudflap (itself a shelfwarmer). In the Universe toy line, any of the Cybertron redecos stayed on shelves for years on end, and you could still find Dropshots on the shelf at some Walmarts years after its release.

With the 2007 Transformers movie, the playing field was changed slightly. Suddenly, Transformers were big again. Toys were in short supply and any toys that stayed on the shelves for very long did so very conspicuously. During the Christmas shopping period following the 2007 movie, Payloads could be found in hordes, even as everything else Transformers (including leftover Cybertron and Classics stock) was disappearing from shelves. Throughout the later part of 2018 and most of 2019 saw "Studio Series Helicopter Dropkick" being A massive Shelfwarmer, if you wanted this figure in the early part of 2019, Well my friend...you wouldn't have A hard time finding one, Especially at Walmart.

Sometimes toys were in desperate demand in the fandom when they were difficult to get, but didn't do so well when released more widely. One online example of this phenomenon is Battle Unicorn. This Beast Machines toy was part of the very last wave of that series's product and was thus barely shipped to retailers. As such, it was very hard to get. It was so rare, in fact, that online store BigBadToyStore made a large special order for them from Hasbro — but despite the fandom's previous clamoring for the toy, they were stuck sitting on a lot of that stock for quite a long time.

The original releases of Alternators Autobot Tracks and Meister, which only shipped in two waves each, also demanded a high rise in aftermarket prices... until Hasbro decided to re-release them as part of a semi-relaunch of the Alternators line. Now, Tracks and Meister suddenly became major shelfwarmers.

A similar thing happened with Alternators Nemesis Prime: In North America, he was released only at the San Diego Comic-Con and via the Hasbro Toy Shop website for the few people who were able to get him from there, and so was very difficult to get. Fans of the Alternators line who desperately wanted the toy were furious about its release only at a non-Transformers convention and complained at length about it not being easily available. Then suddenly the toy turned up in Australia. It hit the retail store Toyworld in massive numbers, and at half the price of usual Alternators. But... no one there wanted it. The American fans had gotten over it by that point, and no one in Australia gave a damn.

Boy, did that thing sit around for ages. It was still available in some stores as of September 2009!

Another example is the 25th Anniversary Unicron figure. When it was released as an Amazon.com exclusive in the US, it sold out quickly and was subject to much scalping, but when it was released to mass retail stores in Canada and South-East Asia, the demand wasn't as high, and there he warmed shelves.

Some toys that sell well in one country may become shelfwarmers in others. Usually this is due to a store only being released in very limited quantities in Country A but getting more favorable case ratios in Country B. Energon Ultra Magnus is a rather infamous example of this. Armada Scavenger and 2007 movie Swindle and Bonecrusher ended up as prolonged shelfwarmers in many European stores because they were the only toys from their respective size classes those stores would ever get from Hasbro. It didn't help that the latter two shipped after the movie line nominally ended.

Expensive toys
Sometimes, it doesn't matter how desirable a toy is if the asking price is too high! Large scale Transformers toys, such as Supreme Class and Titan Class figures, are often too expensive for parents to purchase lightly and are often reserved for special occasions. As a result, they tend to warm the shelves until the holiday season.

Masterpiece toys are an interesting case. Despite being stocked in very small quantities, they are so expensive that they can still warm the shelves. While Masterpiece figures of popular characters like Optimus Prime and Starscream are guaranteed to sell in short order, Masterpiece figures of minor characters are unlikely to sell with younger fans who are unfamiliar with them. Masterpiece Skywarp wound up being marked down to $30 at Wal-Mart. Good luck finding a Masterpiece Seeker for that price now!

In the mid-2010s, the Platinum Edition line as a whole proved notorious for large quantities of shelfwarmers. The combination of a premium pricetag, a store-exclusive status, and comprising almost entirely of retools, redecos, and reissues, leaves a lot of its offerings undesirable to the average consumer or collector.

The Mudflap Conspiracy
For whatever reason, toys named "Mudflap" tend to end up as shelfwarmers regardless of the sculpt: Cybertron Voyager Class Mudflap, the first toy using the name, started the trend, which was continued by his redeco, Movie Mudflap (thus accompanying his Cybertron predecessor on many a store shelf). Revenge of the Fallen gave us a Mudflap character with multiple toy incarnations: Deluxe Class Mudflap generally moved more slowly than his twin brother, Skids, from the same assortment. Likewise, Fast Action Battlers Grapple Grip Mudflap was easier to find than Missile Blast Skids, and things got even worse with the Deluxe Class Mudflap redeco, Tuner Mudflap, a colossal shelfwarmer. Presumably, the only reason Human Alliance Mudflap didn't share the same fate was the fact that the toy was stocked in low numbers by stores in the first place, ironically making this particular toy hard to find.

Overwhelmed by the burdens of leadership, Rodimus Prime doesn't care too much when the Decepticons steal the Matrix of Leadership away from him.

Synopsis
At dawn, the people of Japan are awakening to do their daily tasks: fishing, going to shrines, and sword practice. Then, the Decepticons show up to cause random trouble.

Devastator and Predaking begin harassing a few fishermen, but are chased off by Broadside. Astrotrain tries to ram a train head on (real smart) only to have the Aerialbots drive him away. Bruticus and Defensor fight it out, when Cyclonus and the Sweeps arrive, but are driven off by Rodimus, Kup, and Sky Lynx. However, instead of thanking the Autobots for saving many lives, the government of Japan is very upset, saying that the Autobots frightened people and ruined business (thankless bipeds). When Marissa Faireborn arrives and brings more problems to Rodimus, the Autobot leader loses patience, transforms, and drives off. Kup explains that Rodimus is merely strained under the burden of command, much like Optimus Prime was in his early days as leader, and Marissa decides to follow him, to let him have someone to talk to.

Meeting up on the highway, however, the two are attacked by Wildrider and Dead End, who knock Marissa's spinner into a lake and force Rodimus off a cliff. When they inspect Rodimus, they find the Matrix. Realizing that Galvatron will be really happy, they steal it and return to Chaar. In his throne room, Galvatron inserts the Matrix into his cannon, but instead of making it even more powerful like he had hoped, visions of the Ancient Autobots (including Optimus Prime himself) seep out of the barrel and demand that Galvatron return the Matrix. Galvatron orders Scourge to destroy the Matrix, believing it better to be destroyed if the Decepticons can't have it. Scourge, however, inserts the Matrix into himself, and becomes more powerful... but at a startling price.

Meanwhile, the Autobot leader wakes up, to learn that he's reverted to Hot Rod. Springer and Ultra Magnus argue that they should go after the Decepticons, but Hot Rod feels that the Matrix isn't worth it, and jets off. Real smart idea, Roddy. On Chaar, Scourge challenges Galvatron, defeating him and Cyclonus easily, before leading the Decepticons off to Earth. Galvatron and Cyclonus still function, and set off in pursuit in the Revenge.

On Earth, Hot Rod, while watching a martial arts class, gets some perspective and some wisdom from the kendo instructor, and realizes that he needs to get the Matrix back. Meanwhile, Scourge arrives in Japan with his forces, tossing around the Autobots. Broadside tosses him to the ground and he frightens an elderly woman. Ozu, one of the kendo students, comes to her aid, attacking Scourge with a sword and he begins to chase the pair. He corners them in a blind alley, only for Hot Rod to arrive. Shocked at the changes the Matrix has wrought in Scourge, Hot Rod defeats the Decepticon and reclaims the Matrix, becoming Rodimus Prime once more. Galvatron and Cyclonus find a less powerful, and very frightened, Scourge. And they are none too happy with him...

As the Decepticons retreat, Rodimus realizes that he must deal with his missing part, as have those who came before him. Kup reminds him that no matter who carries the Matrix, he will retain that part forever.
Continuity notes
*Broadside appears in his more toy-based model, with a faceplate, smaller head and large separated optics. He's also shown to be huge, in keeping with his aircraft carrier mode, something which other episodes often failed to convey.
*This episode is one of a handful that finds excuses to turn Rodimus back into Hot Rod, presumably since that toy needed to be plugged as well.
*The Matrix's adverse effects on Scourge could be explained as a result of him having been created by Unicron.
*Gadgets and powers:
**Bruticus can somehow tilt his back cannons forward and fire them over his shoulders, something his Generations toys can do.
**It seems that someone remembered the Stunticons' "automatic forcefields", as Wildrider survives a head-on collision with Rodimus without a scratch, while Rodimus goes down in flames.
*When Galvatron inserts the Matrix into his cannon, he says "Now, all shall become one, under Galvatron's rule!"
*After he rams Scourge, Hot Rod transforms in a manner similar to one of his transformations from the movie.
*This episode marks the last appearance of Springer, Broadside, Astrotrain, Devastator and Marissa Faireborn in US continuity.
*Astrotrain actually travels on the railroad his locomotive mode was designed for in this episode.
*The Ancient Autoboot "ghosts" emerging from the Matrix include:
**A generic character design that was previously seen in "Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2" and "The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1". His colors have changed, though, and he dropped the antennas on the sides of his head he sported in "The Key to Vector Sigma".
**Optimus Prime (he'll be back next episode)
**A variety of other designs appear alongside him, none of which match either the leaders we saw back in "Five Faces of Darkness" or will see in "The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2". At least one is based on these guys.
***The yellow, the red and the orange-and-blue Matrix ghosts' character models were reused in the Japanese The Headmasters cartoon as various generic Autobots.
*While the episode order can vary, it's a little funny that the episode about Rodimus finally getting used to being leader of the Autobots was followed by the episode in which Optimus returns to replace him.

Real-world references
*Set in Japan (see also: "Kremzeek!"), the episode is replete with references to Japanese culture. We see a fishing boat (all wood, with hand-cast nets), a high speed bullet train passing by Mt. Fuji, a kendo dojo, a woman about to offer prayer at a Shinto shrine garden, and a surprisingly accurate rendition of the Tokyo Imperial Palace and its Seimon Ishibashi bridge, where Rodimus meets with the Prime Minister. We also see Rodimus get chewed out by government guys who are stereotypically worked up about robot battles being "very bad for business." And of course there's that metaphorical rising sun in the opening shot.
*The train driver calls in the incident with Astrotrain to "JNR Central", referring to Japanese National Railways (which in the real world would be broken up and privatized only a year after this episode aired.) The specific line is called out as the Yamanote Line, which... is an urban transit line entirely within Tokyo, and certainly doesn't pass by Mt. Fuji, but hey, points for trying! The train itself appears to be very loosely based on the 0 Series Shinkansen trainsets.
*The voice acting for several Japanese characters in this episode employs a very stereotypical Western view of Asian people and their pronunciation of English words.
*Though the concept and word are real, the Japanese word "Giri (Japanese)" (義理) does not actually carry the rather-negative connotations of "The burden hardest to bear" implied by Kup's mistranslation. Rather, "Giri" more accurately means "Responsibility/duty", which is a gladly accepted honor and virtue in Japanese culture rather than a painful annoyance. In the thematic/emotional context of this episode, "The duty hardest to bear" would have been a more fitting title. An even more appropriate word would have been Gimu (義務), meaning "obligation", as a gimu is something which must be done whether you wish to or not.
*The naming of Marissa's vehicle as a "spinner" presumably comes from the hovercar vehicles of the same name in Blade Runner.
*Star Wars sound effects:
**Scourge launches for Earth with the Millennium Falcon engine burst noise.

Animation and technical errors
*Coloring errors:
**Devastator is colored olive green rather than light green in the opening battle.
**Behind him, Predaking is colored entirely orange.
**The first time we see Cyclonus, his nose cone is purple. In the next shot, part of it is grey.
**Onslaught - visible for only a split second as Bruticus separates - remains in the light gray color of Bruticus's torso, even though he should be dark blue. Swindle's weapons are also colored the same yellow as Swindle himself, instead of dark gray.
**Rodimus' spoiler should be orange in the middle, but many shots have it colored completely in yellow.
**Magnus's missiles are white instead of red as he turns to receive Kup's report on the missing Hot Rod. In the same shot, Springer's cheekguards are abnormally huge.
**In one shot of Optimus Prime's "ghost", he is colored completely blue.
**The orange shapes on Cyclonus' chest are colored red in several shots.
**In the pan across the fallen Cyclonus, Hook (standing between Predaking and Drag Strip) is colored like Dead End.
*Devastator splits apart into the Constructicons off-screen, with no transformation sound and no indication of why he separated.

*Hook has two optics instead of a visor as the Constructicons retreat.
*A shot of Astrotrain from the human train's perspective shows no tracks on the ground.

*Superion's mouthplate doesn't move as he speaks; his voice continues giving the command to separate after his components have separated.
*The Aerialbots' lasers simply come from unmarked points on their wingtips.
*Rodimus' crest is missing the horizontal line during most shots in this episode.
*When Rodimus is called to the palace, he's missing his Autobot logo.
*As he says, "When do they get better, that's what I want to know," Rodimus' face becomes all glitched up, with a partially miscolored helmet and a huge shadow line where his eyes should be.
*For some reason, the EDC logo on Marissa Faireborne's shoulder has been replaced with "AOC".
*When Rodimus drives away from Marissa, his smoke trail appears behind Kup instead of in front of him. Also, Sky Lynx is missing in the shot.
*Improbable viewpoints:
**Rodimus' display shows a rear angle shot of Dead End and Wildrider, but he's in front of them.

*When Wildrider holds the matrix, it looks like a big yellow blob. The next shot shows it in the usual colors and configuration.
*After Wildrider and Dead End drive off with the Matrix, Rodimus reverts to robot mode; the animation of him settling into place is played twice.
*While Rodimus is reverted to Hot Rod, he's still occasionally drawn using Rodimus Prime's character model.

*Chaar is portrayed using Cybertron's post-Movie model, with two similarly designed moons.
*Attending Galvatron's throne room are several Decepticons of made-up design, colored as Constructicons (in the same olive-yellow seen previously.)
*Galvatron's throne changes color and design multiple times throughout one scene.
*The ghost image of Optimus has two fog lights instead of four.
*As Galvatron tosses the Matrix to Scourge:
**Bruticus and Devastator have replaced the generic non-Constructicons that were there previously; they are also drawn as normal-scaled Decepticons.
**The Matrix is missing its handles.
*When Rodimus wakes and touches his forehead in the next scene, his face is partly purple.
*A few shots later (during the "Matrix, schmatrix..." lines), the depressions in Rodimus' shoulders are blue instead of white.
*Galvatron is missing the red squares on the tops of his shoulders in most shots.
*Wrong lasers:
**Cyclonus' gun fires a yellow laser. That's the Autobot color (it should be purple). It also uses a non-standard sound effect.
**Hot Rod carries a gray laser gun rather than the usual red rifle. It has a non-standard sound effect instead of Prime's rifle sound effect.
**In the battle scenes just before the Decepticons retreat, nobody has the standard Autobot or Decepticon laser sound effects.

*After he dispatches Galvatron and Cyclonus, Scourge transforms with one of the most cheatsy sequences in the whole series - he simply melts or morphs into his vehicle form.
*When Cyclonus helps Galvatron up from the cliffside, he speaks in mutated Scourge's voice.
*The sensei continues making aggressive fighting noises long after his student opponent has lost his weapon and retreated.
*Galvatron's ship is gray instead of purple.
*The first shot of Galvatron aboard his ship has the whole bottom half of his face in dark gray instead of just his chin
*Two of the hovercraft-mode Sweeps accompanying Scourge are drawn with the heads-sticking-up model.
*Confusing animation and editing makes it very unclear what's happening at the start of Scourge's assault. We're supposed to see a large outdoor video screen showing a character firing a laser gun; then a transport passing by on the street gets blown up by Scourge, making it seem like the movie character blew up the transport - but it all happens so fast there's no time to figure it out.
*Scourge's energy blasts are very poorly animated, often lacking their glow effect and sometimes failing to connect with their targets at all.
*Kup's cry of pain comes before Scourge actually blasts him.
*When Galvatron opens the airlock door, one shot has "AIR LOOK" written on it. Also, it's not actually an airlock - it's just a door directly into space, with no airlock chamber and no apparent mechanism to adjust either pressure or air.
*The Matrix is in Scourge's chest, but later Hot Rod pulls it out of his stomach.
*When Hot Rod fires his first shots at Scourge, the background behind him has turned from a dark, grubby alleyway brick wall into a lit-up building - the same building he pulls up in front of as Rodimus Prime once the Decepticons pull out.
*As Hot Rod holds the Matrix, one shot has his arm pipes clipping through it.
*Hot Rod sticks the Matrix into his chest without opening a compartment for it.
*As Galvatron and Cyclonus fly Scourge away from the city, Galvatron is mouthing something, but there's no dialogue.
*In the last shot of the episode, Ultra Magnus is missing his shoulder missiles and Kup is missing the white part of his chest.
*The version of this episode on the Shout! Factory DVDs features a glitch with an unstable horizontal line appearing at the top of the picture throughout the episode. The error appears to be on the episode's master copy, as the version included on the Kid Rhino DVDs has the picture slightly zoomed in order to avoid showing the offending line.

Continuity errors
*It's not clear what caused the Constructicons to separate and retreat; they seemed to be handling Broadside with ease up to that point.
*The humans who call out "Mayday! Mayday!" don't appear to have a radio on their ship.
*The wanton assault of the Aerialbots seems more likely to blow up the railroad tracks than actually blast Astrotrain off of them.
*Wildrider now has a very bad Southern accent, perhaps in response to his "dun blowed up real good" line.
*Galvatron says the Matrix eluded the Decepticons for years, but he had it for a while during the movie (which happened less than one year ago in the timeline).
*It's not really clear why Galvatron puts the Matrix in his cannon rather than his chest.
*Why didn't the ancient Autobots pop up when Galvatron had the Matrix during the movie? (one possible explanation: he never placed the Matrix inside himself in the movie, instead only wearing it on a chain.)
*Likewise, why does Scourge get all mutated when Galvatron didn't?
*We don't hear Optimus' voice during the "return the Matrix" chant.
*Galvatron comes to the rather odd conclusion that Dead End and Wildrider "dropped" and "broke" the galactically powerful, ancient-beyond-all-history, mystical Matrix, despite learning first-hand during the movie that he cannot use it, "not by a Decepticon."
*After Galvatron tells Scourge to get rid of the Matrix, the scene transition has two Decepticon logos, but the next scene is of the Autobots.
*Just before he quits the Autobots, Hot Rod states that "this war has been going on now for a few dozen millennia". Back in "War Dawn", we learned that the Third Cybertronian War started nine million years ago, which is about 750 dozen millennia... assuming, of course, that we want to take Hot Rod's pointedly off-handed remark as being based on historical accuracy, which is kind of a stretch for a guy who's at the end of his rope and sarcastically railing about "the known universe and its outlying suburbs".
*The Decepticon army is inexplicably small in the second half of the episode, consisting of just Predaking, a couple of Sweeps, and some Constructicons who come and go.
*Ozu injures Scourge (a giant metal robot, juiced up on Matrix steroids) with his sword.
*Scourge is portrayed as ultra-powerful early on, but is defeated by a ramming and three shots from Hot Rod's gun at the episode's end. This downfall comes on the heels of him abandoning his "destroy everything!" mission in order to fixate on chasing an old lady around, making it a somewhat fitting defeat.

Trivia
*This is one of the most well-illustrated episodes of season 3, with lots of deep, detailed shading and well-proportioned characters.
*The Japanese train drivers appear to be wearing... spacesuits?
*When Scourge starts mutating, at one point it looks like he's... crying?
*Isn't it convenient that Scourge launches his attack on Earth in Japan, where the Autobots happen to be located?
*When Galvatron inserts the Matrix into his cannon and it fails to fire, he briefly looks directly into the barrel of his cannon before berating Dead End and Wildrider.

*Those government spokesmen who complained about the fighting in the beginning must be pissed after all the destruction we see at the end!
Karen Fishook is an actress.

Fiction
The Transformers cartoon
Susan Blu (English), Yūko Sasaki (Japanese)

Karen was co-starring on an unnamed movie with Harold Edsel, with which the Autobots somehow managed to get themselves involved. Karen was given the taxing acting role of running up to Harold as he crawled away from various crashed Autobots, expressing her concern and kissing him. Later the filming of some Decepticon activity resulted in the movie turning into a science fiction epic titled Attack of the Alien Robots. With that change, her role became that of a science fiction damsel in distress — fleeing from the "evil alien robots", tripping, and being rescued by her male co-star. Hoist Goes Hollywood (episode)

Animated cartoon continuity
Karen Fishook was part of the cast of Monster from Mars. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac

2005 IDW continuity
Karen Fishook was notable for playing Queen Spacela in the Space Battle film series. At some point, she joined the cast of Nurse Whitney in its second season as the eponymous character's mother; her role was controversial amongst fans. In the modern day, director J.J. Hackensack was able to get Fishook to reprise her role as Spacela in the latest Space Battle installment. Starscream: The Movie (comic)

Some time later, following Unicron's defeat, she was one of the presenters at that year's Academy Awards ceremony. Post

Notes
* Karen Fishook is a parody of Carrie Fisher, or more specifically her character in the Star Wars movies, Princess Leia (she has exactly the same 'hair buns'). Coincidentally, she shares a name with Karen Allen, who played Indiana Jones' Marion Ravenwood.
* Interestingly, she was voiced by Susan Blu, who would later voice Arcee. Arcee would be described by her creators as "the naked mechanical equivalent of Princess Leia". Yeah....
Blast Off doesn't need a write-up in some pathetic, grubby little human database. It might matter to some robots what others think of them, or if they think of them at all, but Blast Off couldn't care less. No, he's literally and figuratively above your average Cybertronian riff-raff. The other Combaticons could completely forget he's up here, orbiting so far above the Earth, distant and alone... with only the empty void for company... and he couldn't care less. No, certainly not.

Lesser robots could hardly understand the joy... yes, that's it, the joy, he finds in efficiently and remorselessly annihilating targets from such a great distance. Blast Off was quite simply "built better" than the rest, you see, and so needs nothing from those tiny beings moving about so... so very... far away below. Blast Off... Blast Off is quite happy with his superior position, yes, quite happy and... and quite alone.

Blast Off was one of the five renegade Decepticons liberated by Starscream in the Air Commander's latest attempt to unseat Megatron. As an element of their imprisonment, they had been reduced to mere personality components, so Starscream installed them into abandoned World War II military vehicles. The transplant caused the vehicles to immediately reconfigure themselves: Blast Off in particular went from being a B-17 Flying Fortress to being a space shuttle, of all things (though he still thought that it was a "crude carcass"). Starscream called them "Combaticons" and announced their names as they transformed, but they didn't recognize him. Nor did they feel particularly indebted to him for their release; in the end, Starscream only guaranteed their loyalty though having given them bodies bereft of energy absorbers, so they would be dependent upon him to refuel. While their first missions for Starscream were initially successful, the Stunticons' intervention meant the brigade's defeat, and Megatron exiled all six to a remote asteroid. Starscream's Brigade

Their exile would prove to be short-lived. With Blast Off providing the locomotion, the Combaticons returned to Cybertron, where they defeated Shockwave and his drone army. It took a temporary Autobot-Decepticon alliance to defeat the Combaticons, and the Autobots believed them destroyed after Cybertron's sort-of liberation. In reality, Megatron had Bruticus (and thus, Blast Off, we guess) reprogrammed to be more loyal. The Revenge of Bruticus

The Combaticons later ambushed the Aerialbots in a Middle Eastern country, and Blast Off heavily damaged Slingshot during the battle. He and the others then went off to help Megatron with his scheme to steal fighter aircraft from the country, and to protect his Giant Purple Griffin. Blast Off somehow failed to notice the Autobot insignias on the stolen and disassembled Slingshot and Skydive before deeming both jets "cheap junk" and leaving. Although to be fair, he probably would've said that even if he knew who they were. Blast Off participated in the following battle against the Aerialbots, but lost when they ignited an oil well, creating an explosion that sent Bruticus flying. Aerial Assault

Later, Blast Off and his teammates were driving around a city before abruptly forming Bruticus and just as abruptly getting blown to scrap by Defensor. Only Swindle was left in one piece, and he quickly took the opportunity to sell the parts of Blast Off and the others to various people. As soon as Megatron found out, he forced Swindle to get them back, and Blast Off was soon repaired. Then Bruticus was defeated by the Autobots again. B.O.T. (episode)
Later, Blast Off was patrolling a litter void in Decepticon territorial space when he found a Skuxxoid on a rocket sled making target practice out of the junk. After running the little punk to ground, Blast Off "convinced" him to give over his impressive blaster cannon. In addition, the alien told him how to find the weapon's rare ammunition, death crystals, from Quig Mountain on the planet Dread. When the Autobots came to investigate, Blast Off and Runamuck attempted to chase them off the scene. Sky Lynx, another egotistical space shuttle, gave them a merry chase, but Runamuck managed to blow up a comet to cover their escape. Chaos (episode)
Blast Off graduated from the Autobot Military Academy and was drafted into the Elite Guard. He underwent the flying upgrade program to become a Space Warrior, but was curiously outfitted with a rather situation-specific (re: useless) alternate mode as a planetary orbiter. Magnum and Sentinel Major recruited him into the Guard's Special Ops Team, the Combaticons. The Coming Storm: Part 2

On their first mission, the Combaticons were teamed with Metalhawk and his Elite Guard Strike Team. In the rundown city known as Median, an archeological dig had uncovered a powerful artifact known as the Heart of the Dragon, and the Decepticon raiders from Quarex called Stormtroopers were planning to swipe it. The Elite Guard arrived in Median to plan a defense and protect the dig team from the coming attack.

It was slow going converting the dilapidated ruins into a sturdy bunker to hold off an attack. Blast Off, Brawl and Dion worked with the dig's security chief Strika on the fortifications, but Blast Off's prissy manner made him little help. He bemoaned the perils of manual labor, while also complaining about his useless orbiter mode which kept him from being useful during manual labor. When the Stormtroopers arrived, Rage and his minions made it past Metalhawk's crew because he made the mistake of trying to take them alive. The operation went downhill from there, and the Decepticons soon escaped with the Heart.

Tracking the Stormtroopers back to their mobile base, the Metrotitan, Blast Off and the others fought their way through Rage's bizarre creations, the Minotorons. Seeing an opportunity to sneak inside, Blast Off, Swindle and Dion mounted the creatures when they were summoned back inside the Metrotitan. Inside the mechanimals pen, however, the only possible exit was an enclosed observation booth far above their heads. Once again, Blast Off lamented the uselessness of his alternate mode, since he could only fly straight up, unable to maneuver enough to get them into the booth. It was up to Dion to use his vehicle mode boosters as a makeshift jetpack to reach the upper levels.

Once the team had reassembled inside, they were forced to confront Brimstone, a small but powerful Transformer with atom-smashing breath, brought to life by the Heart of the Dragon. They engaged in an accelerated advance to the rear long enough for the Strike Team's <s>mad bomber</s> weapons specialist Ironfist to cobble together his explosives and blast Brimstone to J'nwan. The blast didn't kill the creature, but it did upset his delicate energy containment protocols, causing him to explode from the inside out. Blast Off and the Elite Guard managed to escape the blast radius, and reported back to Magnum about a job well done. Flames of Yesterday

The Combaticons and Strike Team continued to work together on many missions over the following weeks. After successfully eliminating Shadowcaster, Blast Off and the Combaticons broke off from their partners to control patrolling the area and search for further leads on the Decepticon Warlords. Instead, they ended up being captured by Deathsaurus. The Coming Storm: Part 3

Deathsaurus saw potential in the Combaticons, and manipulated them into abandoning the Elite Guard and siding with him. For Blast Off, the manipulation required little more than the promise of a Triple Changer upgrade with both land AND space modes so he wouldn't have to be so... lonely up there... The Coming Storm: Part 4

Blast Off and the Combaticons led a squadron of Deathsaurus's troops in battle against the Elite Guard headquarters. Four Elite Guard teams returned to base quickly enough to eliminate the threat of most of the Decepticons. The Combaticons had one last ace to play, however, and used Deathsaurus's new combination technology to merge into Bruticus, killing Sentinel Major and starting the slaughter anew. The Coming Storm: Part 5 Bruticus managed to slaughter pretty much all of the Guard before Dion blinded the giant, forcing them to separate. They headed back to Deathsaurus's base for repairs. The Coming Storm: Part 6

Repairs proceeded, but the Combaticons were startled to learn that Deathsaurus could force them to combine into Bruticus at will. Battle Lines, Part 2 They still turned out to help defend the base against the remnants of the Elite Guard. Blast Off found himself grappling with Side Burn, but gained the upper hand when the Autobot was distracted by the sight of a sword-wielding Lyzack. The Combaticons attempted to merge, only to be blasted mid-combination. Battle Lines, Part 3 In the resulting confusion, Blast Off was bound and sat on by Side Burn, preventing the Combaticons from forming Bruticus again and ultimately resulting in their capture by the Elite Guard. Battle Lines, Part 4

In the hands of the compromised Gyronian Sentry Team, the Combaticons were whisked away to Deathsaurus's fortress, now under Megatron's control. Though Megatron gave them the option, none of them cared to help Deathsaurus, and they were imprisoned and their personality components subsequently interred in the Decepticon Detention Center. Battle Lines, Part 5
Blast Off demonstrated his unmitigated superiority by beating up a pacifist. Darn peace-niks. Months in, Blast Off and the others became worried Onslaught was wasting his time in the Swindle search. Blast Off tried and failed to get him to stop. After Onslaught stormed out, it was Blast Off that saw a new DC-357 message come in and inform them that he'd left a Badgeless disguise outside. Hoping to finally shake the tree, as already the Badgeless' violence was provoking resentment, Blast Off donned the garb, joined a patrol, and as soon as he got a chance he shot a Decepticon escapee dead and sent footage of it to the press. 07:00:00 As riots broke out, a sickened Blast Off headed home telling himself it had to be done.
To his dismay, Onslaught decided not to exploit the Badgeless killing as he felt it could be a Starscream plot to draw them out and so Blast Off had to come clean. This led to a new plan: the Combaticons arranged a march on the government while they waited for an opening. When Ironhide emerged to say he was now in charge of reforming the Badgeless and he was throwing the doors open to anyone, Onslaught and Blast Off organised a 'fight' where Blast Off would protect Ironhide, denounce Onslaught's methods, and ask to join the coppers. He quickly informed Onslaught and shortly later, he and Vortex were dispatched to capture Wheeljack. They were intercepted by Chromia but used her to convince Wheeljack into coming with them. Wheeljack and Rattrap informed them that Swindle was brain dead, and Blast Off tried to make Onslaught stop as it was now pointless, but to no avail. Blast Off followed Onslaught into the inner workings of Metroplex regardless and soon they found Swindle, hooked up to life support. Rattrap then came back and gave Onslaught the Enigma of Combination, who told Blast Off that after this, they won't need anyone else ever again. Things We Said We'd Never Do The Combaticons merged and Bruticus was formed, Blast Off serving as the right arm. Because of the brain dead Swindle, the combiner was very unstable, leaving it up to Blast Off to try and keep everyone unified. He fought with Onslaught for control over Bruticus, saying that there is no point for this level of violence against civilians. Eventually Bruticus was stopped by Ironhide, and when the gestalt divided into its components, Blast Off apologized to Onslaught for not being able to save him before passing out. The Line Between Us
The Combaticons were still comatose when Starscream told the Eukarian mnemosurgeon Airachnid to turn them to his side as one of his combiners. In Blast Off's mind he woke up next to Onslaught, revealing that Blast Off had a thing for Onslaught. It was soon revealed by Starscream who was also there that this was all a dream, and that if Blast Off took his offer to help him sway the Combaticons for his side he could make this a reality. All he needed in exchange was for Blast Off to be aware of the false memories and to cover any holes in their story should the others get suspicious. Initially revolted by the idea of living a lie, Blast Off soon relented after Starscream reminded him that Onslaught would never let the past go or ever take any real interest in him. As a result, Onslaught and the others were made to believe that Onslaught's original deal with Starscream had worked out, with the Combaticons having been his secret and loyal bodyguards, and that their forming of Bruticus had been a last-ditch attempt to save Swindle's life with Starscream's approval.
After the latter's first day "back", Starscream questioned how things were working, mocking Blast Off on how terrible things must be for him now. Blast Off claimed he had never wanted this, but Starscream retorted that he shouldn't pretend it wasn't. Frustrated, Blast Off demanded to see Swindle to make sure Starscream had kept his word to have him repaired. As Airachnid was finishing up on manipulating and repairing him, Swindle greeted his teammate, thanking Blast Off for how far he and the others had apparently gone to save him. If I Know You
Vortex and Blast Off later stood guard outside Starscream's office as Windblade confronted Starscream, and Blast Off was disturbed at Vortex's suggestions as to what was going on. During the final debate, Starscream revealed all of his crimes to the public, including the manipulation of the Combaticons. As a result, all of the Combaticons were imprisoned for their rampage as Bruticus, and because of his role in their manipulation, Blast Off was ostracized by the others, being shunned by his former lover as a bittersweet aftertaste. The Chosen One
In this mode, he is armed with two laser cannons mounted to his engines. In robot mode Blast Off is armed with a small laser pistol and his two laser cannons, which are now mounted on his legs. Along with fellow Combaticon Vortex, Blast Off is the first Transformer figure to use ball joints, located in his shoulders. He usually forms Bruticus' right arm, but as a Scramble City-style toy, he can be connected with any limb slot on Bruticus.

:The initial release of Blast Off had a die-cast metal chest, but like several other 1986 toys, later releases replaced this with colored plastic. In 1987, he came packaged with a random Decepticon Decoy.
We can only assume that the use of Quickslinger's head sculpt over Firefly's mouthplated one has something to do with the sort-of visor that Blast Off acquired via coloring error in the Generation 1 cartoon. :Combiner Wars Special Edition Blast Off is a redeco of his Unite Warriors mold (the first release of this tooling by Hasbro), featuring a dark brown deco more accurate to his original toy, as well as Shuttler's reverse chest as compared to the Unite Warriors release. If desired, his arms can be popped off and assembled in the same configuration as the Unite Warriors release. Unlike Shuttler, however, Blast Off has his arms swapped at his shoulders' ball joints as opposed to at the bicep swivel; as a result, the protrusions on the shoulders prevents the arms from folding up in properly in arm mode if not corrected. As part of a trio of "Special Edition" toys celebrating the Prime Wars Trilogy, he is packaged in a premium window box and includes a redeco of the Megatronus Prime Master (sans Bomb-Burst decoy suit) cast in translucent red plastic. Unlike the other Combiner Wars Combaticons (including his original Combiner Wars figure), his hand/foot/gun has metallic silver paint, making it stand out from the dull bare gray plastic of the others.
:Blast Off was first publicly revealed via preorder listings on Amazon and several Asia-based toy retailers without a prior announcement from Hasbro. Blast Off has the biggest change of all of the remade Kreons, as his dark brown plastics have been turned to an odd greenish-tan, the same color of his pre-release prototype at 2012. His torso tampograph has also been reworked to be slightly more detailed, and the formerly-bare legs now have extra detail tampographing on them. What flat gray paint he did have has been changed to metallic silver. Also the 1x2 "roof" block has been replaced with a 1x2 bare plate, possibly due to a factory change?

:Sadly, this release has no individual-identification code on the bag, requiring you to use the feel-through-the-bag method or just buy blind and hope.
:Sold as part of Takara's Unite Warriors Bruticus gift set with his fellow Combatrons, this version of Blast Off is an entirely new, G1-accurate mold (including the misplaced color application of his animation model visor) that transforms into a space shuttle instead of a jet like the Hasbro deluxe. Blast Off also comes with a newly-sculpted weapon based on his G1 blaster, as well as a new hand/foot/gun accessory that can be used to transform him into an arm or a leg compatible with any Unite Warriors/Combiner Wars combiner teams, or into one of Legends Godbomber's legs. *The character models of the Combaticons are kinda... okay, heavily made-up. Early models of the team which were a bit more accurate to the toys-except for the heads, oddly enough–have shown up in various sourcebooks, though Blast Off's is still off in some very odd ways. Blast Off's final animation model apparently mis-interpreted his forehead crest as a visor, giving him one funkily arranged face, for example.
*The packaging of the 1990 European Classics release of the original Onslaught toy depicted the Combaticons in (mostly) new color schemes, despite the fact that the actual toys looked identical to their original releases. While it may never be known for certain, it has been theorized that these colors originated from a packaging printing error rather than a legitimate attempt to redeco the Combaticons.
*In the Wings Universe continuity the Combaticons are swayed to the Decepticon side by Deathsaurus appealing to their darker natures, represented by one of the Seven Deadly Sins. As noted above, Blast Off is convinced by the offer of a Triple Changer upgrade so he'd be, y'know, useful (he already has three different vehicle modes in his various toy representations that all tickle down as Blitzwing). His vice is thus Envy.
This same spelling was later used to render the first part of Blast Master's name, an unrelated shuttle character released years later. What Blot does through carelessness, Snapdragon does with deliberation. He loves nothing more than caring for his unusually sensitive and delicate hide by bathing in putrid grease pits; if those aren't available, the running fuel from his victims' corpses will do. His bouts of animalistic fury and sheer love of destruction would make him an excellent warrior if not for the fact that he's also as lazy as the Empties in the Dead End. His personal quarters are littered with alarm clocks shot to fragments by laser fire because Snapdragon just wasn't motivated to kill and maim that morning. His fellow Decepticons know they risk suffering a similar fate if they try to wake him, but often risk it in the hopes of channeling Snapdragon's rage towards the Autobots. Woe to the Autobot warrior who faces Snapdragon without his beauty rest. However, his laziness and appalling personal habits make him unwelcome among his fellow Decepticons, except for the equally thuggish Apeface.
Snapdragon was one of the Decepticon animals who attacked Autobot City as a diversion, so that the Decepticon Clones could steal the Key to the Plasma Energy Chamber. After a quick game of "kick the can" with Freeway, Snapdragon retreated and joined Scourge's unit in journeying to the Chamber, where the Sweeps leader fouled up and lost the Key to the Autobots. Galvatron sent Snapdragon and the others with Scourge, as they tracked the Autobots who recovered the Key to Nebulos. While there, Snapdragon caught Arcee's hand in his jaws, prompting Daniel Witwicky to leap to her defense. Unfortunately, the mauling of Daniel led the remaining Autobots to develop Headmasters, and they rescued their friends from Snapdragon's Decepticons. When his leaders made a deal with the evil Hive to counter the Autobots' advantage, Snapdragon gave up his head (well, one of them) to be binary-bonded to the Nebulan known as Krunk. The Rebirth, Part 2
Snapdragon and Apeface joined Galvatron on his trek throughout the universe for more energy and quickly became his favorite warriors. The duo fought the Monsterbot named Doublecross, although he was almost too busy arguing with himself to notice. They later traveled to Autobot City and picked a fight with Raiden, preventing him from entering the battle between Sixshot and Ultra Magnus that led to the Autobot City Commander's death. Ultra Magnus Dies!! Sixshot continued to employ Snapdragon and Apeface's services on Earth, as the Decepticons unleashed five simultaneous attacks on Autobot outposts on the planet. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg
After the Autobots arrived on Master, Apeface and Snapdragon were triple-teamed by the new Targetmasters. Perhaps not considering the Horrorcons worthy of exerting their new powers, Pointblank and the Targetmasters spent the whole battle unarmed and in vehicle mode, and still royally smacked the chips out of the two Decepticons. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2) When the Decepticons kidnapped Wheelie, the Horrorcons stood guard outside the MegaZarak base. As the Decepticons finished preparations for their fourth tower in Egypt, the Battleship Maximus arrived to put in an appearance. Weirdwolf's trio was the first to intercept the battleship and engage the enemy, but Apeface and Snapdragon were quick to follow. Unfortunately, Weirdwolf was leading his men in a rather bizarre and unstable totem pole maneuver, which only got worse after the Horrorcons hopped on top of Mindwipe. At that point, Fortress simply hit the gas, causing the "tower of power" to topple over the side. Apeface and Snapdragon searched for a weapon of unbelievable power known as the Charge Arrow. Equipped to fire only a single shot, the Charge Arrow was still highly coveted due to its ability to harness countless amounts of energy. They located it at the Tower of Omega on a distant planet, but were opposed by Chromedome and Daniel Witwicky. Chromedome tried to wield the Charge Arrow against the Horrorcons, but to their delight he failed to make it work properly. Filled with a sense of triumph, Apeface and Snapdragon mercilessly beat the Autobot Headmaster before advancing on Daniel. Seeing his friend in trouble, Chromedome summoned the burning justice necessary to wield the Charge Arrow, and used it to blast Apeface between the eyes. ====Autobot story====
While Optimus Prime's squad team explored the geothermal power plant, Snapdragon ambushed them. He dropped from the ceiling in his dragon mode and transformed to robot mode, giving his thanks to the Autobots for coming, but told them it was time for them to go home. Determined to stop the Decepticons, the Autobots soundly defeated Snapdragon. The Headmaster decided to leave while he was still functional, Snapdragon transformed to his jet form and fled the power plant. Snapdragon later reappeared for a rematch with the Autobot squad in a valley where the Autobots had detected an SOS signal. He lost again. He tried again one last time before they reached ELTA. He still lost.

Decepticon story
Snapdragon was a member of a team that Megatron sent to investigate a mysterious UFO that was spotted in the area of Zel Samine. Something caused the team to lose contact with the main Decepticon forces, and they found out that they could not leave the planet, as Zel's sun, Paradius, emitted electromagnetic rays that was harmful to them. Unable to contact Megatron and with no way to leave the planet safely, Snapdragon and the others scattered across Zel.

When the Decepticon forces went to Zel in order to investigate, they found Snapdragon at the Jaad wind power plant in his dragon mode. When he spotted them, he expressed relief at having found his friends, and transformed to robot mode. The Headmaster Decepticon complained about how it took so long for him to find his fellow Decepticons, explaining that fighting Autobots on his own was hard. Megatron was pleased to see Snapdragon, telling him that it time for him to rejoin the Decepticon forces. Snapdragon promised that he would and saluted his leader. The Transformers (PS2)
Notes
*One of the many confusing glitches in The Rebirth is the fact that, while Krunk and Spasma were clearly designed to transform into both the robot and animal heads of their partners, the Horrorcons retained their beast mode heads even when their Nebulan partners were separated from them.
*According to Atlus's Transformers video game, Snapdragon's reptilian alternate mode is, in fact, a dragon.
*In the Japanese The Headmasters series, Krunk does not exist as a separate entity from Snapdragon; like all Headmasters, the large robot is just a lifeless transtector body controlled entirely by the head unit. While the toy of Snapdragon's head unit was referred to as "Krunk" when separated from the larger robot body, the head unit was not referred to by this, or any, separate name in the cartoon.
*The Latin American Spanish translation of the Headmasters cartoon presents some problems with Snapdragon's name. On Snapdragon's first appearance, Galvatron calls him "Zela". (However, it's a bit hard to understand; if you don't listen carefully, it sounds like he says "Zedda", which has caused further confusion.) Then Snapdragon presents himself as "Ozela", after which both the narrator and Chromedome call him "Zela". Later, Hardhead calls him "Zedda", and finally, Galvatron calls him "Zela" again. This would seem to make "Zela" his official name, since it's used the most frequently. This is neither the first nor the last dubbing mistake in the series.
*In the same Spanish dub, he calls himself "el dragón indestructible" (the indestructible dragon).
