Hunter, Jimmy, and Verity discover that their pursuers are robots... in disguise!

Synopsis
Mechatopia.com shows Hunter O'Nion's recent theories regarding an invasion of Earth by alien mechanoids. And while his theories sound preposterous, he believes.

Verity Carlo and Hunter are speeding through the desert of Southern California inside an ambulance with a perpetually smiling, blond driver. Hunter realizes that not only were they being attacked by one of the disguised mechanoids he's been seeking—but that the ambulance they're sitting in is also one of them!

Suddenly, two sports cars—one white, one black—join the jet in pursuit of the ambulance. The driver asks if the two humans can be trusted as the steering wheel and instrument panel transforms into a sophisticated holographic 3D map. The ambulance rams the cars and fires at them from hidden gun ports. Badly damaged, the cars end the chase, but the jet is still after them. The ambulance deploys a smokescreen and drives away.

Verity logs onto her palmtop and finds the fugitives a place to hide—the automotive workshop of Jimmy Pink in Riverside. Jimmy and the ambulance driver get to work on the repairs while Hunter and Verity have a chat. She reveals that she and Jimmy are both net-hikers, members of a community of drifters who use the Internet to maintain their mutual-assistance network.

Meanwhile, the jet and sports cars are back on patrol, but can't find their targets. They do have a lead on the palmtop signal; all they need is for someone to activate it again, which Hunter does covertly as he tries to discover the device's true origin.

Jimmy has finished the repairs to the ambulance, and marvels at its sophistication. Hunter then throws around accusations: the ambulance is an alien robot in disguise, Verity's palmtop is stolen and it's the very item that the jet and sports cars are trying to recover. He confronts the ambulance driver with a picture stored on the palmtop of a robot in mid-transformation. To Verity's surprise, the ambulance driver says that Hunter's theories are true. Sick of conspiracy paranoia, she takes the palmtop back from them and walks outside.

Within a second, she's back inside, babbling frantically about Decepticons. The garage door is explosively ripped from its mount, sending debris everywhere, and smothering the smiling ambulance driver. But suddenly he's in the driver's seat of the ambulance, demanding the three of them get in.

Too late. The side of the building is ripped away, revealing two giant robots—one black, one white—who demand they hand over the palmtop.
Notes
Continuity notes
*The first page shows Hunter's website, which mentions "dinosaur-variant mechanoids" found at Eureka, Nevada, a plot thread that will play out in Spotlight: Shockwave.
* The site also mentions the eruption of Mount St. Helens, which will tie into Spotlight: Soundwave.
* It appears the current Autobots and Decepticons only came to Earth in 2002, as no real evidence of them dates before that; they got noticed by nerds after the "Buchanan crop manifestations" in Iowa.
* First appearances: a miscolored Prowl; Jimmy Pink.

Transformers references
* The mention of the eruption of Mount St. Helens, and its given date of 1984, are both obvious nods to the origins of the original Generation 1 stories.
* This second issue of the IDW Generation 1 continuity also has several plot similarities with the second issue of the original Transformers comic. In both, a human ally take a wounded Autobot to an auto shop, where the mechanic comments that he's never seen a car like this. After the Autobot is repaired, some Decepticons appear, a battle ensues, and the location gets wrecked. In that earlier story, Verity and Hunter are replaced by Buster Witwicky, Jimmy by Sparkplug Witwicky, Ratchet by Bumblebee, and the Battlechargers by the entire earthbound Decepticon army.

Real-life references
* Apart from the mentions of Nevada and Mount St. Helens, the primary action is set in southeast California, and the Ark-19 is shown parked at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
*Hunter's workstation includes DVDs of Ghost in the Shell and the Matrix, along with an "I want to believe" poster as popularized by The X Files, and a Yoda toy.

Errors
*Prowl is miscolored as Ironhide on page 12.
*If Ark-19 is in Lake Michigan, why are there sharks in the water? Sharks are predominantly a saltwater fish.
*Runabout and Runamuck are pretty much color-swapped the entire issue, until the last page. How can you tell? Because Ratchet blows out Runabout's window in the vehicle mode battle, but on the last page, robot mode Runamuck is the one with the blown-out window.

Other trivia
*The "Decepticomments" section featured mail answered by Chris Ryall and a contest to win a full set of covers from issue #0.
*The word "prickly" appears no fewer than three times in this, Prowl's first appearance in the IDW Generation 1 continuity. Coincidence?

A young woman steals an item from a businessman that turns out to be more than meets the eye.

Synopsis
At a bus station in Phoenix, Arizona, young Verity Carlo is picking her marks when she spies a high-end palmtop PC in use by an anonymous businessman. Unknown to all, he's being tracked by someone, or something, in the guise of a black sports car.

Using a stolen ticket, Verity hops onto the same Los Angeles-bound coach as the businessman and while he's napping she lifts his palmtop. Helped along by a rancid bagel, Verity feigns illness and is left at the side of the road. The coach takes off, followed closely behind by two seemingly normal sports cars.

Verity sticks out her thumb at the next car and is picked up by an intense young man, Hunter O'Nion, who is rather self-conscious about his last name. Hunter takes a sudden detour and the pair discover that Verity's coach has been run off the road by two sports cars. Everyone's okay, except that the businessman whose palmtop Verity stole is missing.

After lots of prodding by Verity, Hunter reveals that he's an internet alien conspiracy theorist tracking down reports of giant machines in the area. She just finishes a laugh at his expense when the two are scanned and attacked by a blue fighter jet.

Hunter's van is destroyed, but he and Verity are saved—by the smiling driver of a suspiciously well-armed ambulance...
Notes
Continuity notes
* As this is our intro to this new universe, it's told heavily from a human point of view. This also ties into the story's heavy emphasis on concealment and disguise.
*The Transformers are shown to have concealed heavy artillery in their alternate modes. This will often be used in subsequent issues—the fight scenes in the next two issues are primarily done in vehicle mode.
* First appearances: Runabout, Runamuck, Thundercracker, Starscream, Ratchet, and our two human heroes.

Transformers references
* The use of Ratchet and Thundercracker as primary characters in this introduction to IDW's continuity may homage early stories of the Marvel Comics continuity. Specifically, Ratchet was the lead protagonist in Bob Budiansky's first story arc for the US comic book. Thundercracker, meanwhile, served as a main antagonist (or the main antagonist, depending upon the version and the coloring) for the first original story appearing in the Marvel UK comic, "Man of Iron".
* Further, the emphasis on Transformers remaining disguised in alternate modes, even throughout battles, also seems to homage Man of Iron. Other than Starscream's shadowed back, no Decepticons are seen in robot mode in this issue, similar to how only alt-mode Decepticons appeared until the very end of the Man of Iron storyline.

Real-life references
*Ratchet's holomatter driver states, "If you want to live, come with me," in a reference to the T-800's similar statement to Sarah Connor in the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Verity made fun of this in issue #1. Simon Furman would later be the author on a Terminator-based comic series called Terminator 2: Infinity.

Errors
*After identifying herself as "Verity Carlo" in the narrative text, the character identifies herself to Hunter as "Verity Carter". An internal justification could be that "Verity Carter" is an alias she uses to prevent Social Services tracking her down, but when Ratchet asks for her name in issue #1 she answers with "Verity Carlo".
*When Verity points her knife at the duffel bag on the bus, her right hand has six fingers. Also, when Verity whips out her dual mace spray attack, she has six fingers on each hand.
*Hunter must possess both superhuman vision and nerves of steel to be able to see there is no pilot inside Thundercracker's cockpit as the Decepticon jet passes overhead.

Other trivia
*The issue features a welcome page by Chris Ryall (as ChrisCharger), a 3-page interview with author Simon Furman, and 2 pages of sketches from artist E. J. Su, including a 1-page writeup.
*Cover A features Jazz with his original Porsche 935 hood/chest, but when actually seen in the comic, he transforms into a current-model Porsche 911 (aka 997).
