For this year, the toy commercials utilized CGI as provided by Lamb & Company for their animation segments, which would then be reused for the cartoon as its Title sequence and Commercial bumper animations. The toy footage would be filmed in model cities and deserts that were sadly not available to buy.
1994
This year, inspired by the increase of its use in the likes of Jurassic Park and other major blockbuster films, the commercials would see the CGI animation established in last year's set being blended in with live-action environments. AFCG Inc would handle the animation for this set of commercials in lieu of Lamb & Company, sporting much glossier and more detailed robots compared to the simplistic boxy models of the 1993 ads.
Later, Onslaught leads the Combaticons (with Blast-Off notably grounded for some reason) in a counterattack, shooting a missile before converting to robot mode and knocking Air Raid off the same platform his subordinates were stationed on briefly before. Scissor Boy is taken hostage by the Autorollers, and gets Tasmania Kid rolled into his mess as well.

Synopsis
Exiting the Galvaburg II, the Autorollers Autocrusher, Autostinger and Autojetter set off to destroy their mortal foes, the Insectrons, once and for all. At their base, Scissor Boy, Powerhug and Drill Nuts have just heard about the other Insectrons' recent battle with the Autorollers and recall their past troubles with them. Although he'd love to take them all on by himself, Scissor Boy decides to contact the Maximals for help, as they'd recently become friends. Scissor Boy collects all the Insectrons' data regarding the Autorollers onto a disk with the intention of delivering it to Tasmania Kid.

On his way to make the delivery, Scissor Boy spots Autostinger. He attempts to take him captive, only to find he was baiting a trap. Now surrounded by Autocrusher and Autojetter, who intend to gun him down, Scissor Boy thinks quickly. He gets all nostalgic and reminds the Autorollers of all the good times they had together as friends. The Autorollers remind him that they were never friends and Autojetter prepares to shoot his head off. Autocrusher stops him, saying they should use him to find the remaining Insectrons. Scissor Boy says he'll gladly take his "old war buddies" back to see Powerhug and the others, who miss them as well. In reality, he doesn't know what the heck he's going to do.

Up on the Moon, Artemis laments the pickle Scissor Boy has gotten himself into. Moon says he has no other choice, while Artemis prays someone will come along to help him soon.

Back on Gaia, Powerhug has decided to take a proactive approach and find the Autorollers first. Drill Nuts encourages him to take his new and improved hate-detector. He swears that it will work properly this time, as it has the Autorollers' data entered into it.

Elsewhere, the Autorollers hear a noise and, along with their hostage, decide to hide in wait for it. The noise turns out to be Tasmania Kid, humming joyfully as he brings a bouquet of freshly picked flowers to the Insectrons (insects like pollen, he believes). The Autorollers prepare to ambush him, but Scissor Boy attempts to talk them out of it, explaining that Tasmania Kid is the smallest and weakest of the Maximals and wouldn't be much sport. Autostinger won't hear it, and tells Scissor Boy to capture Tasmania Kid himself, and if he makes any false moves, he'll blow him up with a missile. Reluctantly, Scissor Boy scrambles out into the meadow and tackles the confused Tasmania Kid. In the scuffle, Scissor Boy explains the situation to Kid and "convinces" him to play hostage alongside him. Scissor Boy brings the "defeated" Tasmania Kid back to the Autorollers, explaining that he'd just bested the strongest of the Maximals. Autostinger says he thought he said Kid was the weakest (much to Kid's irritation). Scissor Boy backtracks, explaining it was a slip of the tongue, and that they should bring the defeated Kid back to the Predacons as a present for Megastorm. The Autorollers agree, but decide to hunt down the remaining Insectrons first.

Meanwhile, Drill Nuts and Powerhug are fiddling with the hate-detector. It ends up leading them to Starscream and BB, who are flying overhead. Powerhug registers his disappointment in Drill Nuts's mechanical ingenuity.

Back at the death march, Kid and Scissor Boy decide to lead the Autorollers back to the Maximals so that Lio Convoy can defeat them. As they pass a river, Scuba spots their approach. Scuba relays his findings via NAVI to Lio Convoy and the others aboard the Yukikaze. Lio Convoy orders the Maximals to hide behind some rocks and await the approach of the Predacons.

Not far off, Powerhug and Drill Nuts are still following the hate-detector, and much to Drill Nuts's joy, it leads them right to the Autorollers. They decide to save their comrades by causing an avalanche, and while the falling rocks catch the Autorollers off-guard, they leap down into the fray. Their cunning plan, unfortunately, knocks the Autorollers, Kid and Scissor Boy and themselves off the cliff, where they land at the base of the Galvaburg II. Megastorm exits and the Autorollers present their catches to him. The Insectrons realize there's no other choice and decide to fight it out with the Autorollers. Megastorm attempts to summon the Combatrons, but Tasmania Kid opens fire on him to keep him from sending the communication. As Drill Nuts takes on Autojetter, they argue over whether it is better to be recklessly impulsive (like Autojetter) or a gloomy brainiac (like Drill Nuts). Autocrusher and Powerhug then pit their strength against one-another to see who comes out on top. Then, Autostinger and Scissor Boy go at it; Autostinger revealing that, via promotions, the Autorollers hope to rule their own planet one day, while Scissor Boy says that freedom and friends is even better.

Megastorm decides to end the skirmish by transforming to tank mode and opening fire. He puts the enemy on the ropes until Lio Convoy and the Maximals arrive. They make short work of the Autorollers and Megastorm, who board the Galvaburg II and retreat. The Combatrons then decide to show up, much to Megastorm's fury.

Powerhug apologizes for ruining Kid's strategy and curls up into a ball in embarrassment. Scissor Boy gives his disk full of Autoroller data to Kid, as Drill Nuts is pleased that his hate-detector actually worked.

Artemis & Moon II Report
In this installment of "Artemis & Moon II Report", they go over the Maximal base; the Yukikaze. Having crashed into the North Continent of Gaia, it cannot fly, but that's okay, because it's surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The Maximals can use smaller, operational aircraft to set-up sub-bases all over Gaia for convenience's sake. The Predacon's ship, the Galvaburg II, is operational and can fly anywhere on the planet. Moon looks over to Artemis and sees her scribbling something in a notepad. Turns out, she's planning to use this information to strategically decide the most romantic time to meet Starscream. Moon thinks she's abusing the data.
Galvatron is back—and that means bad news for both the Maximals and Megastorm!

Synopsis
Having thus far failed to establish a fortified base on Gaia, Megastorm tries a new tactic and unleashes a massive swarm of small saucer-like craft to tap Angolmois Energy and construct bases all over the planet simultaneously, gambling that the small Maximal force will lack the numbers to counter them. The Predacons compliment him on his scheme, but when Dirge remarks that the sleeping Galvatron will surely be happy when he wakes up, Megastorm screams at him to be silent, and stalks from the room. As Starscream explains to the other Predacons that Galvatron's reawakening will mean Megastorm's loss of his current position of power, Megastorm checks in on his slumbering brother, and sinisterly whispers that he can carry on sleeping, as they do not need him any more.

Up on the moon, Artemis is reading a postcard when Moon starts freaking out. Artemis is caught up in the postcard until Moon grabs her and shows her that a massive amount of the planet's Angolmois Energy is being tapped all at once by Predacons' saucer ships. The Maximals spring into action, destroying the ships and the bases they are constructing as fast as they can, but for every one that explodes, more simply spring up to take their place. The battered Maximals withdraw to their base for repairs, as Lio Convoy curses his own failure to anticipate the Predacons' plans.

Megastorm, meanwhile, has come up with a plan to keep himself in power—he dumps Galvatron's comatose body into one of the wells of Angolmois Energy that the saucer-ships have created near an active volcano. No sooner has he committed the deed, however, than a horrible groaning echoes up out of the well, and Megastorm realizes he has made a terrible mistake. A sudden energy surge within the pit is detected by both Artemis and Moon and the Maximals, and the group of heroes races to the scene just as Galvatron makes his dramatic revival! Galvatron demands to know why he was in the well, accusing Megastorm of committing the deed, but Megastorm hastily blames the approaching Maximals, and Galvatron races off to intercept his old enemy, Lio Convoy. Megastorm has been granted a momentary reprieve, but he realizes that Galvatron is not stupid, and will soon deduce the truth...

The Maximals are approaching the volcano when Galvatron appears to block their way, accusing Lio Convoy of a dishonest attack while he was sleeping. Lio Convoy refutes the allegation, but Galvatron is having none of it, and transforms into his new drill tank mode to skewer the Maximals. Our heroes transform for battle, but their blasts have no effect on the Predacon emperor, and Lio Convoy is forced to draw Galvatron away from the other Maximals, up to the volcano's rim. The chase does not go well for Lio Convoy, who injures his leg and is left dead in Galvatron's sights, until Scuba comes to his rescue by summoning up a geyser beneath Galvatron that hurls the villain down the mountain. The Maximals gather around their fallen foe and collapse the surrounding rock face on top of him with a hail of laser blasts. Kid and Diver are convinced that Galvatron has been finished off, but as they approach to check out his pancaked remains, a gusher of black smog bursts up from the rocks, proving that while Galvatron might be down, he is far from out.

From within the black mist, Galvatron cackles that he has scanned Gaia's most powerful creature, and reveals his new form to the Maximals—that of a colossal, fire-breathing dragon! Faced with this new monstrous form, the Maximals are left with no option but to flee, but Galvatron pursues them, forcing them into the mouth of the volcano. As he stands on the volcano's rim, raining fire down upon them, the Maximals attempt to shoot out the rocks beneath him, hoping to drop him into the volcano, but cannot accomplish the task. Nearby, however, is Megastorm, who has been watching the whole battle from his concealed position. Following the heroes' lead, Megastorm blows away the ground beneath Galvatron's feet with his cannon, sending his brother toppling into the molten magma. His position as emperor secured, Megastorm does not realize that Starscream has seen everything...

After climbing out of the volcano, the Maximals take a moment to recuperate and are left to wonder who it was that aided them. Lio Convoy realizes that someone else is not happy with Galvatron being around, but none of the other Maximals can think of who it could be. As the heroes scratch their heads, below them, the magma bubbles...

Artemis & Moon II Report
"Artemis & Moon II Report" shines the spotlight on Galvatron, briefly discussing his transformations. Aside from retelling the audience of recent events, it mentions how Galvatron can use his dragon wings as a cutter weapon, showing footage from later events of this deadly device. When Artemis explains that Galvatron can only transform into his dragon mode under certain circumstances, Moon calls Galvatron clumsy, and the Predacon leader himself arrives and breaks up the featurette, unhappy at the fact that people having been talking about him behind his back.
Notes
Continuity notes
*Galvatron has been unconscious since his encounter with a Gaian computer in "White Lion, Run!"
*The Predacons' perversion of Angolmois Energy results in a cloud of black smog, which Scuba recalls also occurred back in "The New Forces Arrive!"
*Galvatron will remain trapped in rock until "The Strongest Tag Team?".
*Galvatron's submergence in Angolmois Energy will have unexpected results, as seen in "Galvatron Rampages".

Real world references
*Starscream calls Thrust and Dirge a "manzai combi", referring to a style of Japanese comedy. "Manzai" is a kind of two-man stand-up rooted in the "straight-man/funny-man" style, involving high-speed jokes which revolve around assorted types of wordplay. This is, of course, how Thrust and Dirge act all the frickin' time.

Trivia
*Artemis and Moon do their level best to tear down the fourth wall in this episode, speaking directly to camera and attempting to answer a postcard from a viewer named Suzuki, from Suginami, who wants to know exactly what their freaking deal is. Since the show had only been on the air for a month at this point, it's pretty much impossible that this was a real viewer missive, but it does highlight the weirdness of the two characters, whose presence is not explained till much later in the series.
Tasmania Kid's desire to make a name for himself lands the rest of the Maximals in danger.

Synopsis
While out on the prowl, wishing he had scanned a beast mode that would let him fly, Tasmania Kid stumbles across the Autorollers constructing a Predacon base along the shores of a lake. Observing from afar, he decides to advance his standing amongst the Maximals by taking the base down himself, and he radios the Yukikaze to tell them he's “bringing something back” to make up for his failure to return on time. While Diver speculates that it might be some tasty oil, Apache bellows at Kid to reveal his position. Kid cuts off the transmission, and Apache continues ranting at the console until Diver points out that Kid is no longer listening.

Up on the moon, Artemis is particularly distressed to observe the disruption of Gaia's Angolmois Energy as the Predacons suck it up. Moon, on the other hand, is more interested in sucking up all the juice he's drinking, earning him a bonk on the noggin from Artemis's hammer.

Back at the lake, Tasmania Kid sneaks closer to the Autorollers' building site and meets a real Tasmanian devil along the way. While thinking on how to proceed, Kid observes the little animal burrowing into the ground and hits upon the idea to dig his way under the building site and plant some explosive charges. Kid grins happily as his bombs tear the base apart and the Autorollers peel out, but his levity is abruptly brought to an end when a cage of electrically charged bars suddenly springs out of the ground around him. Starscream's voice sounds over a loudspeaker, confirming the Maximal's suspicion that the whole thing was a trap. The real Predacon base is, in fact, at the bottom of the lake, and Kid is quickly transported there and locked in a cell. Starscream taunts him that the other Maximals will soon come to rescue him and walk straight into their trap. Determined to fix his own mistake, Kid escapes into an air vent, but the Combatrons are able to observe his movements from the control room and laugh as they see that he is moving himself into a corner. Suddenly, Megastorm appears on the viewscreen, demanding an update on the plan. Dirge and Thrust suggest that the plan might go smoother if they were put in charge, and the whole group starts bickering, but Megastorm threatens to execute them all if their fighting causes the plan to fail.

[[File:Laketrap maximalscaged.jpg|thumb|"Ray shields."<br>
"Wait a minute. How did this happen? We're smarter than this."<br>
"Apparently not."]]
Nearby, Lio Convoy, Bighorn and Apache are tracking Kid's last transmission when they cross paths with the Tasmanian devil. The animal gets their attention and leads them to the lake, where they catch the scent of gunpowder from the explosion. Just as they realize that the lake is the site of the Decepticon base, the electrified cage suddenly appears around the Maximals, but they are all able to leap clear before it traps them. Starscream's voice is heard once again, announcing that they have captured Tasmania Kid and that the Maximals must surrender if they want to see him alive again. To convince them, Starscream plays them a hologram of Kid in the base's ventilation system, dodging jets of flame and razor-sharp blades that spring out of the walls. As Lio Convoy struggles with the decision, Diver quietly pops his head out of the lake and whispers to his leader that he has discovered the Predacon base on the bottom of the lake. With this knowledge, Lio Convoy quickly puts a plan into place and agrees to surrender. The cage surrounds the team, while Diver silently swims off, followed by Scuba and the Tasmanian devil.

Beneath the waters of the lake, Thrust and Dirge head out in a small submersible to collect Lio Convoy and the Maximals. When Dirge looks through the periscope to sight the Maximals, however, he is shocked to see the face of the Tasmanian devil looking back at him and mistakes it for Tasmania Kid, thinking that he has escaped the base. The pair race back to the base, allowing Diver and Scuba to follow their submarine through the airlock. While Dirge and Thrust chase the Tasmanian devil through the base, Diver and Scuba split up to rescue Kid and deactivate the cage. Scuba follows Dirge and Thrust and watches as they are chastised by Starscream for mistaking the Tasmanian devil for Kid, since they can see that he is still in the ventilation system on the viewscreen. Scuba chooses this moment to step forward, weapon drawn, but suddenly hears Kid's voice, as the young Maximal bangs on the vent wall to attract his teammate's attention. The vent is in the process of flooding, and Scuba quickly shoots out the wall, freeing Kid. BB immediately opens fire on the two Maximals, but misses, and the duo disappear into the smoke as Starscream swats his comrade and tells him not to fire inside the base. The four Combatrons give chase, and Kid and Scuba think they have shaken them when Thrust and Dirge transform to jet mode and are unable to turn a corner to follow them. Unfortunately, they are playing on the Predacons' home turf, and the villains shut off corridors to halt the Maximals' escape and soon catch up to them. Cornered, Kid at least begs them to let the Tasmanian devil go, but Scuba tells him it is too early to give up—and true enough, just as the words pass his lips, the door melts away, revealing Lio Convoy and the other Maximals, who have been freed by Diver.

Meanwhile, Megastorm has been watching the whole sad scene on his viewscreen, and, enraged, announces over a loudspeaker that he intends to blow up the entire base with the Maximals inside. As the corridor closes off in front of them, allowing the Combatrons to escape, the Maximals are left unsure of which way to go to escape, but the Tasmanian devil comes to the rescue once again and leads them outside with moments to spare. As the Maximals haul themselves out of the lake, the Galvaburg II disconnects from the base and bursts out of the water seconds before the complex self-destructs. The Maximals grumble about the fact that the Predacons escaped, but Kid tries to find the silver living by pointing out that at least their base was destroyed. The other Maximals aren't particularly impressed, and Lio Convoy tells Kid that he should thank the Tasmanian devil for his help. Kid pets his new friend and promises to repay him by crushing the Predacons.
After seeing a red flower, Bighorn snaps... and the Predacons are in for a world of trouble!

Synopsis
As Tasmania Kid and Bighorn wander through a field beside the Yukikaze, Kid plucks a flower from the ground and shows it to Bighorn, commenting that he thinks the whole field is a bit on the gaudy side. The red hue of flower sends the pent-up Bighorn into a rage, and he repeatedly headbutts a rock wall as he roars about the current lack of action. Meanwhile, aboard the ship, Apache and NAVI report to Lio Convoy that they are unable to get a fix on the Predacons' ship. Lio Convoy arranges for an on-foot search of the planet, and Scuba and Diver go outside to inform Kid and Bighorn. Bighorn roars with delight and immediately stampedes off, followed by Kid; Diver turns to suggest that he and Scuba go in the opposite direction, but Scuba has already gone off on his own.

Elsewhere, aboard the Galvaburg II, with Galvatron still unconscious after his experience with the ancient Gaian computer, Megastorm continues to command the Predacons toward his own ends. Megastorm instructs the Combatrons to find Lio Convoy, to merely report his location, so that he can destroy the Maximal leader himself. The four jets head out, and Starscream and BB soon come across Bighorn and Tasmania Kid in a forest. Bighorn takes offense when they try to ignore him and go on with their mission, so BB distracts him with a barrage of bombs so that they can go on their way. Up in the Moon, Artemis watches the whole thing, agreeing that Bighorn is right to be so annoyed after being ignored.

Somewhere nearby, Thrust and Dirge have taken Megastorm's mission less than seriously, and are sitting around complaining about him when Bighorn comes charging towards them. They sidestep his charge, realising that he can't turn very well, but once he transforms to robot mode, a hail of missiles suddenly comes streaming down out of the sky, collapsing a cliff on top of all three of them. This is, of course, Starscream and BB's doing: they're out to take Thrust and Dirge out of the running and get all the credit for finding Lio Convoy, and they fly off before Bighorn can dig himself out. Emerging from the rubble, Bullhorn is met only by the sight of Kid, teasing him that once again, the bad guys have left before he can fight them.

Ultimately, it is Diver who strikes it lucky, coming across the Galvaburg II berthed in a crevasse. As he radios in his discovery, Megastorm emerges from the craft to search out Lio Convoy himself, and immediately spots Diver hiding behind some rocks. Diver flees as Megastorm opens fire, but the Predacon pursues, seeking to capture the Maximal and force Lio Convoy's location from him. Diver radios for help, and his transmission is picked up by Kid and Bighorn (who has been busy plucking flower petals to see if he can or cannot go on a rampage). The pair quickly arrive to help Diver, and Bighorn body-slams Megastorm, who is not especially happy that he's being confronted with minions, instead of Lio Convoy himself. Starscream and BB show up and are ordered by Megastorm to deal with Bighorn, but the fighting-mad Maximal takes them both down by returning the favour and collapsing a cliff on them. Enraged, Megastorm transforms to tank mode and prepares to fire his cannon, but it takes so long to charge that Bighorn is able to slam into him before he can open fire. Megastorm is content to weather the beating and wait, and once his cannon reaches full charge, the blast tears up the surrounding landscape, with even a glancing blow sending Bighorn flying off into the distance. Lio Convoy and Apache arrive as the smoke clears, and Lio Convoy tells Bighorn that he can stand down, but Bighorn refuses. BB and Starscream burst out from under the rocks and try to take on Lio Convoy, but with a little help from Apache, he takes them both down, leaving Bighorn to face off with Megastorm again. Bighorn calls out to Kid to give him a hand, instructing him to pull on his tail. Kid is confused, but as Megastorm's cannon nears full charge again, Bighorn insists, and Kid complies. Tugging on Bighorn's tail activates his special ability, the "Buffalo Missile", which blasts Megastorm off into the sky. As the injured Predacons escape aboard the Galvaburg II, Bighorn sighs with relief, and announces that he feels relaxed now.

A little later, back in the field by the Yukikaze, Diver shows Tasmania Kid a flower that he plans to give Bighorn as a little reward for such a great fight. Before Kid can stop him, Bullhorn spots the red flower from a distance, and comes roaring towards them...!

Featurette
This episode's featurette, narrated by Lio Convoy, showcases the Maximals' special weapons, highlighting the shocking literalness with which the show interprets Bighorn's toy gimmick and foreshadowing Apache's third mode. Lio Convoy opts not to talk about himself.
Real-world references
*This episode makes reference to the popular myth that bulls charge at the sight of the color red. In truth, . The cape used in a bullfight is actually red in order to mask the blood splatter as the animal is finally killed. So, yeah...
*The climax of the battle makes very literal use of Bighorn's toy's action feature, even to the point of Bighorn not activating it himself, requiring Tasmania Kid to do so.
The Maximals are reunited with their leader, but the Predacons' campaign of destruction is only getting started.

Synopsis
Escaping into the jungle after their battle with the Predacons, the Maximals are instructed by Apache to follow the white lion that saved them. The lion leads them to the crashed remains of their ship, the Yukikaze, where they are greeted by the still-active NAVI and transform back to robot mode in the safe, sealed atmosphere of the ship. The lion stalks into the control room, terrifying Tasmania Kid and Diver, but Apache has already deduced the truth that is then revealed—the lion is, in fact, their missing commander, Convoy, or as he is now known, Lio Convoy! After a happy reunion, Lio Convoy explains that he crash-landed on Gaia after the explosion in space, and when he regained consciousness, his body had already been crippled by the harsh atmosphere of the planet. A white lion discovered his injured form and carried him to a cave bursting with Angolmois Energy, which restored him to full heath, after which he took the lion's form. Now that he's back in command, Lio Convoy prepares to take the fight to the Predacons... but first, he has NAVI prepare a special steak. The other Maximals think that a party is in the works, but really, it's for the lion that saved Lio Convoy's life, much to Tasmania Kid's disappointment.

Meanwhile, the Predacons have landed the Galvaburg II atop some ancient ruins deep in the jungle, beneath which Angolmois Energy has been detected. Investigating, Galvatron and Megastorm discover an ancient computer containing information on machines and creatures from Gaia's past. Galvatron scans the two most powerful entities the computer has to offer, only to immediately collapse, unconscious. Megastorm is initially distraught, but when he fails to rouse his brother, his tune quickly changes and he declares himself leader of the Predacons. Using the computer, he outfits the four Autorollers with destructive vehicles modes that they quickly put to use razing the landscape to prepare it for construction of a base of operations. Next, the Combatrons are given aerial vehicle modes, and instructed to track down the white lion responsible for the Predacons' earlier defeat (unaware that the beast was actually Lio Convoy). Starscream suggests to BB that they try to capture the lion themselves to get one up on Thrust and Dirge, and as they break off to investigate on their own, they spot the real white lion. BB opens fire, scaring the animal off and causing no end of amusement for Thrust and Dirge, who speed off to get the lion for themselves. In response, BB blasts them with a smokescreen, causing them to crash into a mountain.

As Artemis freaks out over all this up in the Moon, and Moon pays little attention, NAVI alerts the Maximals to the destruction in the jungle and they head out to deal with the situation. Tasmania Kid, Diver, Bighorn and Scuba tackle the forest fire, with Bighorn enthusiastically beating the flames back while Kid has a go at peeing on them. Neither tactic works especially well, but Scuba saves the day by locating an underground river and causing it to erupt in a geyser that douses the inferno. Lio Convoy and Apache, meanwhile, go to help the injured white lion, and the enraged Lio Convoy decides to take the fight to the enemy. Allowing himself to be captured by Starscream and BB, he is brought before Megastorm (who has scanned himself a tank mode in the meantime) and promptly breaks free. Transforming to robot mode, he unleashes a hail of missiles upon the three Predacons, forcing them to retreat aboard the Galvaburg. As the smoldering ship lurches off over the horizon, Lio Convoy happily affirms the success of their mission, and thanks the lion for all it has done.

Featurette
This episode's concluding featurette is narrated by Lio Convoy, who provides the audience with a run-down on the Predacons and their abilities.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
*As Megastorm looks down on his unconscious brother, he is colored green, as if were already in his tank body, when he hasn't actually scanned it yet.
*As the camera pans up and to the right while Megastorm stands over the unconscious Galvatron, his mouth stays in one place for a few frames and then pops back into place while his body stays with the camera.
*The animators haven't quite got the hang of drawing the Maximal symbol yet. Lio Convoy's chest emblem is replaced by various malformed attempts at it throughout the episode.
*The four vehicles that Megastorm commands the Autorollers to scan appear on his computer as (clockwise from top-left) a red tank, a yellow pickup truck, a grey dump truck, and a green payloader. While Autostinger would become a (yellow) dump truck and Autocrusher a green payloader, the other two vehicles shown do not match with what either Autolauncher (who becomes a red APC) or Autojetter (a gray jet) become.

Transformers references
*Although it's all done for the sake of humor, Tasmania Kid notes that he's grateful to transform back to robot mode, since the longer he spends in beast mode, the more he feels like an animal. The unhealthy influence of a Transformer's beast mode on their mind after prolonged time in that mode was previously seen in "Call of the Wild".
*Additionally, Kid has picked up the animalistic quirk of scratching behind his ear with his leg in robot mode—not unlike a lot of other Beast Wars characters who picked up strange robot mode quirks based on their beast modes, like Rattrap's penchant for eating garbage.
*In this episode, the Autorollers are portrayed as upgraded "Combatants" (who, despite some belief, are not intended to be protoforms). This apparent origin would later be contradicted by a fleshed-out backstory in "Autorollers Roll Out!"
A team of Maximals heads to the planet Gaia in order to save it from Galvatron's Predacons—but can they accomplish this mission with their leader missing in action?

Synopsis
Responding to an SOS from a small planetoid somewhere out in space, Maximal commander Convoy and his deputy commander Apache head through an asteroid field in two small, single-man reconnaissance crafts. Despite being cautioned by Convoy to be wary of the possibility of a Predacon trap, the cocksure Apache zooms ahead, zipping around the asteroids at great speed. What he does not expect, however, is for the planetoid in front of him to start moving, bearing down on him on a collision course. Convoy streaks into action, opening fire on the planetoid, which explodes dramatically. Although Apache is hurled to safety by the blast, Convoy is sent spiraling off into the depths of the cosmos.

Elsewhere, on the far edge of the universe, an asteroid tumbles towards the planet Gaia. As it hits the atmosphere, however, its rocky shell begins to crumble away, exposing the Predacon insignia beneath—in truth, this "asteroid" is the Galvaburg II, a Predacon starship commanded by the Emperor of Destruction, Galvatron. Galvatron picks up a strange energy signature from the planet below, although he has to clobber his brother, Megastorm, to get him to shut up so he can get the message across to his troops. The Predacons trace the energy signal to a flare of light emerging from the planet's surface and set about harnessing its power, shrouding their ship from sight with a field of black fog. High above their heads, within the moon, Gaia's watchers, Moon and Artemis, despair over this wicked use of the planet's "Angolmois Energy", but Artemis expects the Maximals will arrive soon—after all, they usually do in situations like this!

Elsewhere in the universe, at the Maximal Space Station under the command of Convoy, Kid and Diver are attempting to play chess, only to be interrupted by the station computer, NAVI, informing them of the abnormal energy flare on Gaia. Kid dismisses the idea of going on the mission, as Convoy is still missing. Bighorn is willing to go regardless, but Scuba agrees that going without their Supreme Commander is pointless. When Kid claims that it doesn't look like Convoy will be back, Apache drunkenly refutes the notion, having drowned his guilty sorrows in oil. Bighorn takes charge and decides to take the mission, and everyone follows him aboard their ship, the Yukikaze. Apache doesn't quite make it, though, and trails along behind the craft on a cable, freezing solid in the void of space. The trip is a short one, and Gaia is soon in sight, but almost instantly, a heavy barrage of laser fire flies up from the planet's surface and blasts the Yukikaze out of the sky. As their spacecraft falls, the Maximals escape the conflagration in stasis pods.

Kid's stasis pod makes a rough landing, and to make matters worse, his onboard computer quickly tells him that the atmosphere of Gaia will rapidly corrode the Transformers' bodies. To escape a rusty fate, he quickly searches for a local animal to scan, spotting an eagle and triggering his scanners. However, a Tasmanian Devil leaps into the path of the scan beam, and Kid scans its DNA instead, becoming "Tasmania Kid". He is not especially pleased with this fact, but forgets his woes when the animal leads him to the edge of a nearby cliff and shows him the black fog, spreading across the landscape and rotting away nature. Thanking the Tasmanian Devil, Kid heads into the dying forest, but finds his way barred by a large body of water without a bridge or road in sight. A large frog pops out of the water and compliments Kid on his choice of a rare animal to scan—the frog is actually Diver, who carries Kid across the water on his back. As Diver is swimming along, the pair panic when they are apparently attacked by a squid... but it's only Scuba having a bit of fun. He carries the pair the rest of the way across the water at high speed, and they carry on through the forest, meeting up with Apache (who has scanned a mandrill) and Bighorn (in the form of a bison).

Together, the quintet track the black fog to its source within a large crevasse, but as they argue about who's going to go in, the ground begins to shake beneath their feet, and they all tumble in. They land on top of the Galvaburg II as it emerges from the cloud and quickly realize what's going on, but no sooner have they transformed then they are caught in a paralysing energy web. The Predacons surround and open fire on the immobile Maximals as the watching Megastorm cackles, but Galvatron is impassive, sensing the approach of something powerful. That something turns out to be a white lion, which leaps onto the Galvaburg II and hacks the energy projectors to pieces with its claws, freeing the Maximals from the web. The fighting-mad Maximals strike back hard, and the Predacons take cover within their ship once more as the Maximals' blasts kick off a series of explosions across the Galvaburg IIs hull. The white lion leads the Maximals off the ship (despite grumbling protests from Bighorn) just as one huge final explosion goes off, and the group stampedes off into the wilderness.

Featurette
Following the episode, Tasmania Kid narrates a short featurette that introduces the Maximals to the audience, describing their personalities, but he runs out of time before he can talk about himself and their missing commander.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
*The tailfin of Convoy's reconnaissance craft switches from being blue and red (when it first appears) to yellow and red (when he saves Apache).

Transformers references
*Diver's toy-gimmick (a spring-loaded extending frog-mode tongue, which happens to be his robot-mode head) is rather amusingly interpreted here as an extending neck. In frog-mode, it allows him to pop his robot-mode head out of his mouth. Wacky!

Trivia
*This episode features the first instance of Transformers scanning alternate modes and taking on their forms without needing to use any external equipment, something that is entirely commonplace in the fiction these days.

*Moon and Artemis's narration on the next episode promo tries to spin the Maximals not knowing the white lion's identity into a genuine mystery for the viewer. This is... optimistic given that his identity is shown in the opening titles, the closing titles and the ad bumpers, let alone all the show's promotional material.
The sudden reappearance of the Decepticons on Earth forces the long-hidden Autobot Pretenders to drop their human disguises and rejoin the fight.

Synopsis
Off the coast of Canada, aboard a luxury cruise liner, the captain of the vessel entertains his passengers with a song as he steers through the night. Down on the deck, a pair of newlyweds are on their honeymoon, with the husband filming his wife against the moonlight on a video camera... when suddenly, from the ocean depths, two monstrous creatures appear! A flying, bipedal bat-monster slaughters the captain, while a fish-like humanoid pulls the girl into the freezing waters. This pair are Blood and Gilmer, Decepticon Pretenders, who terrorize the crew and summon mechanical fish-beasts known as Gulfs to destroy the engine room. As the ship sinks amidst explosions, the pair cackle evilly, knowing that this will flush out the one they seek... the one known as "Metalhawk".
Far away from this scene of destruction, the following day, in Japan, scientist Professor Gō and his partner Hawk are watching Gō's son, Shūta, play in a school soccer match. Afterwards, the pair are returning to Gō's laboratory at the Space Astronomy Research Center when Hawk receives a communication from a friend that he has not seen in some time, Diver, who informs him of the Decepticon attack on the cruise liner. The tape from the husband's video camera was recovered, and Diver has had the footage forwarded to Gō's laboratory for Hawk to see; Hawk immediately recognises the two Decepticons, and he and Professor Gō realize that the time they have feared and planned for has come to pass - after being gone from Earth for so long, the Decepticons have at last returned! Just then, Shūta arrives at the lab, and his father asks him to leave the room as he and Hawk talk, but Hawk decides that Shūta should also be made aware of the situation. Shūta, however, is less than convinced when Hawk reveals his secret - he is not from Earth.

Night settles in as Hawk explains the full story to Shūta. He is Metalhawk, one of a group of Autobot Pretenders, who have the power to transform into human beings. They came to Earth during the Neolithic era when they pursued a group of Decepticons into the Solar system, and their damaged ships crashed on the planet. Unable to return home, they used their powers to adopt the forms of human beings, to safeguard the burgeoning mankind against the Decepticons, who took on monstrous forms to terrorize them. Hawk and his fellow Pretenders defeated the Decepticons and sealed them away in remote locations around the Earth... but now, they're back!

Hawk's statement is punctuated by an explosion somewhere else in the world, as another of the Decepticons' monstrous Seacons, Tentakil, destroys an oilfield and the human military helicopters that attack it. The Decepticon attack continues into the next day, as the third Decepticon Pretender, Dauros, directs a Tentakil in an attack on a Japanese city. Blood soon arrives, making fun of Dauros for "playing leader" - Dauros retort that Blood's actions are too weak, but Gilmer arrives to break up the fight before it can begin. A news report of the attack reaches Hawk, who is moved to action. With a cry of "Suit On!" he dons his battle armor, and then, to Shūta's shock, reveals his true form - his human features dissolve, and his body expands and enlarges, transforming into a giant golden robot. Metalhawk transforms into jet mode, and sends out the call for the other Pretenders to rally - Diver, a marine biologist at an Ocean Research Center in California, plunges into the ocean and becomes a submarine; Lander, a womanizing geologist, is interrupted in the middle of a date in New York, leaving his lady-friend dazed as he becomes a vehicle that speeds through the city streets, out-racing police; and the fourth member, Phoenix, lifts off from an airstrip into stormy skies as a jet.

Metalhawk arrives in the city, and the Pretenders hold back from attacking him to see how Tentakil fares. As they battle, Shūta arrives on the scene on his motorcycle, and cheers Metalhawk on as he pummels the Seacon. However, the boy is seized from behind by a second Tentakil, causing Metalhawk to be distracted long enough to be blasted out of the sky by his opponent. Metalhawk strikes back with his Titanium Saber, deflecting laser blasts and slashing the first Tentakil to bits, but as he turns on the second, the Decepticon Pretenders take action, transforming into their robot modes. Metalhawk demands to know how they escaped their prisons, but they simply attack him; he is badly outnumbered until Phoenix arrives to save his skin. Blood and Phoenix dogfight in their jet modes as Diver and Lander charge into view, and Lander tackles Dauros. Gilmer stays Metalhawk's hand by aiming his blaster at Shūta, but Diver sneaks up behind him and brings him down, freeing Metalhawk to save Shūta. With their Seacon servants defeated, the Decepticons flee.

As the sun begins to set, the Pretenders tell Shūta the rest of their story. When they first encountered humans, all those thousands of years ago, all they saw was small, frail beings - but when they discovered their ability to feel love, their compassion for others, and their indomitable courage, they were so shocked to find these qualities in such beings that they too decided to become humans. Taught by mankind that strength alone is not enough, the Autobot Pretenders have vowed to protect the Earth against the threat of the Decepticons!
Quotes
The following quotes are from the Omni Productions dub

"I came from a planet called Autobot, which is far away from here. To put it correctly, I am an extra-terrestrial being which is a transformation of a robot."
:—Metalhawk explains his true nature to Shūta with the dub's usual finesse.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
*Right before the second commercial break, there's a pulling back shot of the two Tentakils standing over Metalhawk's body, and they both appear to be sliding sideways across the ground.
*When Metalhawk charges at Dauros he lets out a battle cry while his mouth is still closed.

Continuity errors
*Despite occurring in 2020, nine years after The Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce — as is its wont — willfully ignored the futuristic setting and technology depicted throughout that series and the third season of the Generation 1 cartoon, in favor of presenting a world that basically corresponded to the present-day at the time (1988). This continues throughout the entire series.

Real-world references
*Lander's date is listed as "madonna" in the episode's credits. This, of course, has nothing to do with the singer or the Virgin Mary, but rather goes back to the word's origin as a medieval Italian word for an important woman. The Japanese have adopted the word to refer to cute girls—Masterforce character Minerva will even be referred to as a "little Autobot madonna" by Gilmer in a future episode.

Trivia
*The Super-God Masterforce title sequence is not afraid of offering up a few spoilers for what's to come in the series — depicted are Hydra and Buster, who won't appear for another seven episodes; Ginrai (who won't appear for nine episodes); King Poseidon (another fourteen episodes!); and Lightfoot (another fifteen episodes!!). And these are not one- or two-second-long fleeting glimpses of the characters, as is common with Western cartoon openings, but extended, detailed action sequences, which even reveal the characters' names through on-screen English text! The closing sequence is no better, featuring all six Headmaster Juniors.
*Likewise, the commercial bumpers also showcase several characters who have yet to appear - in addition to Metalhawk and Blood, the first set of bumpers featured in the series depict Shūta, King Poseidon, and Ginrai.
*The Autobots and Decepticons all departed from the Earth at the end of The Headmasters.
*The above summary makes a few specific notes about the occupations and locations of the human-mode Autobot Pretenders that are casually revealed as the series progresses, that have all been listed here for simplicity's sake. Note the distinct "sea-land-air" theme running through the group's names, jobs and alternate modes — Diver is an underwater vehicle and works with sea animals; Lander is a ground vehicle and works as a geologist; and Phoenix is an aircraft... whose job is not actually explicitly revealed, but his attire, and his intro scene in this episode, suggest he works at an airport or an Air Force base. The trend is also continued with the Decepticon Pretenders, with the flying Blood, who becomes a jet; the aquatic Gilmer, who transforms into a submarine; and Dauros, who transforms into a tank that can tunnel underground. Even the fights in this episode are paired off in this manner — Phoenix vs. Blood, Lander vs. Dauros, and Diver vs. Gilmer.

Gilmer.

Foreign localization
English
:*Title: "The Return of the Decepticons" (Omni Productions dub)
:*Original airdate: May 27, 1990
::*As is usual for the dubs, characters are given their Western names.
::*The photographer yells "Look! What is that!" before Gilmer even appears in view.
::*Hawk doesn't play up the personal danger to Shūta from the Decepticons, instead mentioning that the Decepticons will do anything to fulfill their plans.
::*While explaining the history of the Autobots, Hawk mentions "in the confusion many of us were lost, and now I can only identify four of us", implying that there are other Autobot Pretenders out there.
::*The Decepticons are a lot more intent on calling out Metalhawk—it's all they ever talk about!
::*According to the narrator, Phoenix is in Germany when he gets the call to action.
::*Hawk's "humans are awesome" speech becomes a generic "the Decepticons will be back but we can defeat them by working together" speech.

:*Title: "Rise Up!! Pretenders" (Shout! Factory sub)
::*Similar to Shout! Factory's release of The Headmasters, some subtitled names have been changed to reflect Hasbro standards instead of the original Japanese names. We see Blood as Bomb-Burst, Gilmer as Submarauder, Dauros as Skullgrin and Gulf as Skalor for the Decepticons. For the Autobots we have Diver as Waverider, Lander as Landmine and Phoenix as Cloudburst.

Italian
:*Title: "I mostriciattoli rivoltosi" ("The revolting little monsters")
::*The Italian title for this episode looks like a translation of the English title for episode 5 (The Troublemaking Little Monsters).
::*Planet Cybertron is called Sibara.
::*The term "Pretenders" is never used in the Italian dub of the series. In this episode Hawk simply says that he's an Autobot, instead of a Pretender.
