Some might call Autobot armorer and weapons master '''Crosshairs''' overcautious, while others might call him a huge pain in the [[Anatomic euphemism#skidplate|skidplate]], but Crosshairs knows that he controls a vast armory that could be incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. Thus, he sees it as his duty to protect it with his impenetrable filing system and his incessant demands for request forms - in triplicate.

Should the need to use this powerful arsenal ever arise, Crosshairs is a stickler when it comes to ''how'' all this weaponry should be used. He demands that ''every single'' unit of ammunition be monitored, dislikes it whenever a shot, blast, or discharge goes to waste, and is quite slow when it comes to combat. As a result of this, however, he's an ''extremely'' skilled and precise marksman, and is capable of fighting the fight longer due to his very conservative ammo consumption.

Many years ago, Crosshairs was a member of [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus]]'s [[Science Division]] during the reign of Protector [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. This peaceful existence ended when a [[The Fallen|mysterious relic]] was discovered outside the [[Simfur Temple|temple]] of [[Simfur]], and Megatron changed the military's mission of defending [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to open conquest. He listened to Optimus's pleas for them to ignore Megatron's demand and stay out of the fighting. {{storylink|Defiance issue 2}}

When the civil war broke out, Crosshairs, like many scientists, joined Optimus ''Prime's'' new faction, the Autobots. When [[Dreadwing (Movie)|Dreadwing]]'s forces betrayed [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] at Simfur, Crosshairs, Clocker, [[Armorhide (Movie)|Armorhide]] and Arcee created havoc by destroying the [[replica AllSpark]] cube and fighting the rebel Decepticon forces. The phase shifter was stored in the [[Vaults]] at [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] until late in the war, when it was ejected into space as a safety measure when [[Megatron (WFC)|Megatron]]'s forces stormed the [[Autobot]] capital. It made its way to [[Earth]] where it landed in the area where the [[human]]s would eventually build [[New York City|Manhattan]]. [[Knock Out (Prime)|Knock Out]] and a unit of [[Decepticon]]s discovered the relic in a Manhattan subway. At that time, none of the Autobots or Decepticons sent to find it knew what powers it possessed until [[Bumblebee (WFC)|Bumblebee]] accidentally activated it after retrieving it from Knock Out. The train which was barreling towards him passed straight through him and [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] explained what the device was after they had defeated Knock Out. {{storylink|Tunnel Vision}} Bumblebee then took it back to base with Miko in the opposite seat singing about their victory. {{storylink|Hurt}}

[[Smokescreen (Prime)|Smokescreen]] later borrowed it from the Autobots' storeroom and used it to cleverly remove [[Starscream (WFC)|Starscream]] from the [[Apex Armor (Prime)|Apex Armor]]. {{storylink|New Recruit}} He borrowed it again when he and Arcee went to find the first [[Omega Key]], and it saved his life when [[Megatron (WFC)|Megatron]] hit him with a wave of energy from the [[Dark Star Saber]]. After he used it to save Optimus and retrieve the Omega Key, Ratchet said he could keep it. {{storylink|Alpha/Omega}} Following Smokescreen's capture, Knock Out claimed the phase shifter and used it to pull an Omega Key from Smokescreen's chassis. The Autobot managed to get the device back, embedding Knock Out in a bulkhead in the process. He used it to steal both Omega Keys possessed by the Decepticons, and survive a plummet to the ground. {{storylink|Inside Job}} With the kids hostage to the Decepticons, Smokescreen was forced to throw down the phase shifter. {{storylink|Darkest Hour (episode)|Darkest Hour}}

In reality, Smokescreen was able to recover the phase shifter during the commotion in which Optimus Prime destroyed the Omega Lock. Smokescreen utilizes the phase shifter to recover a near-death Optimus Prime from the wreckage of the base.
