'''Titans''' (sometimes also known as '''Metrotitans''') are giant city-sized bots, created long, long ago. Able to transform into cities and massive starships they and their crews traveled out from Cybertron in ancient times, vanishing into legend... forgotten almost entirely by the world they left behind until the day they began to return.

Although few Transformers can meaningfully interact with a hibernating Titan, the [[Caminus|Camien]] tradition known as "[[Cityspeaker|cityspeaking]]" allows normal-sized Transformers to communicate with these beings by observing the readouts of their colossal [[brain module]]s.
===IDW Generation 1 continuity===
[[File:Windblade4 CaminusRobotMode.jpg|thumb|left|upright=1.5|Super Titano Bros.]]
Titans were living starships, city-sized Cybertronians of unspeakable power who (legend has it) served the Knights of Cybertron before they departed from the homeworld of the Transformers. The original three Titans were hailed as the strongest and most awe-inspiring of their number: [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]], the "First Titan", [[Chela]], the "Golden Warrior", and [[Metrotitan (Zone)|Metrotitan]]. The legends spoke of those three standing by Primus as he warred with his opposite. {{storylink|Origin Myths}}

According to legend, the bestial [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] was raised by [[Mortilus]] to battle the Titans of Primus. {{storylink|The Transformers: Salvation|Salvation}} Some time after the war with Mortilus, the Knights of Cybertron led their followers to the stars aboard a fleet of Titans to usher in a new era of [[Cyberutopia]]. {{storylink|Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|You, Me, and Other Revelations}}

Prior to the unification of the [[Thirteen]], the first three Titans were summoned by [[Onyx Prime]] as an elaborate form of crowd control to halt the fighting between Onyx and [[The Fallen|Megatronus]]'s armies. The trio then stood vigil over [[Crystal City]] in the subsequent peace treaty and celebration. {{storylink|Origin Myths}} In the age that followed, each Titan allied themselves with at least one Prime. Among them was the massive Titan [[Vigilem]], who served the [[Liege Maximo]]. When the [[First Cybertronian Civil War]] swept their world, the Titans cast Vigilem and his leader into space, renaming their fallen brother "Carcer". {{storylink|Rubicon}}

[[Cyclonus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Cyclonus]] claimed that the Titans still existed on Cybertron during his time, and that he used to pray in their shadow. {{storylink|Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|You, Me, and Other Revelations}}

[[File:ReluctantSpecialist-LeviathansOfTheSky.jpg|thumb|right|upright=1.5|"The bigger they are, the more you can charge."]]
The conclusion of the war led to a brief age of interstellar colonization spearheaded by the Titans. Thirteen Titans left Cybertron, carrying hot spots in order to populate new worlds. According to the [[Mistress of Flame]], the Colony Titans were sent into space to prepare new worlds, one for each member of the [[Thirteen]] to rule over. {{storylink|Conquerors Part 1: Aphelion|Aphelion}} In many cases, these colonies developed unique adaptations that set them apart from Cybertronians; the Titans themselves were often repurposed into cities and building materials. {{storylink|A 'Bot and Her City}} {{storylink|Windblade issue 4|Windblade vol. 1 #4}} {{storylink|First Contact (IDW)|First Contact}} {{storylink|Windblade vol. 2 issue 4|Windblade vol. 2 #4}}

Over time, Titans fell into the realm of myth and legend. By the time Cyclonus had become part of [[Nova Prime]]'s inner court, only two Titans remained on Cybertron, both in hiding. One, [[Metrotitan (Zone)|Metrotitan]], slumbered in secret beneath [[Crystal City]], and was guarded by [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]]. When Nova discovered the upper city and allied himself with Omega, the guardian hid the Metrotitan's existence from the Prime. His recalcitrance paid off when Nova fell into megalomania and departed Cybertron to conquer other worlds, at which point Omega revealed Metrotitan to Nova's more respectful former follower, [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]]. Omega explained that the Titan would only awaken in the presence of a great Cybertronian, but that it would be Dai Atlas's task to protect it until then. When the Autobot/Decepticon war subsequently broke out in the following millennia, Dai Atlas became a conscientious objector and gathered together many like-minded Transformers to form the [[Circle of Light]], and used Metrotitan's energies to power their departure from Cybertron. {{storylink|Primus: All Good Things|All Good Things}} Settling on the planet [[Theophany]], the Circle built a new Crystal City atop the still-sleeping Metrotitan, continuing to use his energies to power their new home. {{Storylink|Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|You, Me, and Other Revelations}}

The other remaining Titan on Cybertron was called [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]], "the first Titan". {{storylink|The Reluctant Specialist}} Metroplex was a long time friend of the ancient Cybertronian called [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]], and in the past they surveyed and mapped most of the planet together, including the [[Rust Sea|Rust Spot]]. {{storylink|Omega's Conundrum}} At one point, Metroplex entered a deep slumber as the "[[Acropolex]]" of Nyon, until the early days of the Autobot/Decepticon War when the new [[Prime (rank)|Prime]], the former [[Optimus Prime (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Orion Pax]], woke him with the [[Matrix of Leadership]] to aid him against [[Zeta Prime]] and [[Megatron (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Megatron]]. {{storylink|Rise}} After the battles were done, {{storylink|Endgame}} he served as Autobot headquarters for some time until he departed the planet with Alpha Trion to investigate and counteract [[Regenesis|Shockwave's star-spanning project]]. {{storylink|Earthfall Part 1: Hello Cruel World|Hello Cruel World}} One group of Decepticons, led by [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]], attempted to follow, and travelled to a planet where he was refuelling, but [[Thundercracker (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Thundercracker]] woke him rather than inform his superior, and prompted Metroplex to teleport onward before Bludgeon discovered his presence. {{storylink|The Hunting Party (IDW)|The Hunting Party}}

At some point afterward, [[Shockwave (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Shockwave]] obtained his space bridge nodes to install them in Megatron's new body, {{storylink|Spotlight: Megatron}} apparently forcing him to travel physically through space thereafter.

[[File:PrimusAllGoodThings-MetrotitanEmbedded.jpg|thumb|left|upright=1.7|This is why Metrotitan hates Mondays.]]
Millions of years later, the few remaining Titans were growing increasingly decrepit and weak from underfuelling. Believing that the ancient giants held the key to reaching [[Cyberutopia]], the supposed location of the Knights of Cybertron, Chief Justice [[Tyrest (G1)|Tyrest]] hired [[Lockdown (G1)|Lockdown]] to hunt down and kill Titans so that he could use their parts to cobble together an antique space bridge leading directly to the Knights. {{storylink|Remain in Light 3 of 5: The Divided Self|The Divided Self}} Lockdown and his group of [[Titan Hunter]]s tracked down the weakened Titans, killed them, then took them to be stripped down for profit before using the remains to find the next one. {{storylink|The Reluctant Specialist}} The leftovers were left on [[Moonbase One|Luna 1]], Tyrest's headquarters, in a veritable elephants' graveyard of Titan corpses. {{storylink|Remain in Light 2 of 5: House of Ambus|House of Ambus}} At one point Lockdown's hunters followed a Titan signal to the ''[[Lost Light]]'', which had a sloughed-off piece of Metroplex aboard that had recently struck the ship, and aimed to use it to detect Metroplex himself, before being forced off by [[Trailbreaker (G1)|Trailcutter]] without their prize. {{storylink|The Reluctant Specialist}}

At some point, Crystal City was razed by Tyrest's [[Legislator]]s, leaving no sign of life, save the Titan slumbering underneath. When the crew of the ''Lost Light'' arrived to investigate, a subsidence sent them tumbling into the cavern beneath the city where the Titan lay, and they decided to enter its very body so that the their resident [[mnemosurgery|mnemosurgeon]] [[Chromedome (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Chromedome]] could tap its brain and hopefully find out what had befallen the Circle of Light. Doing so, Chromedome discovered that the Titan's mind was still alive and screaming in frustration—it had heard the call sent out by Cybertron upon the planet's reformatting to "come home", but having been drained by the Circle for so long, it lacked the necessary power to teleport its giant bulk across space. With the Titan willing to destroy itself to separate its [[spark]] from its body in order to return home, [[Brainstorm (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Brainstorm]] used miniaturization technology to shrink the giant down to a size that its reduced power could teleport away from the planet. {{Storylink|Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|You, Me, and Other Revelations}}

[[File:RID26 MetroplexPunchingNecrotitan.jpg|thumb|right|upright=1.7|"NOW HERE I GO!"]]
The shrunken Titan successfully quantum jumped back to Cybertron, to its old home in Crystal City, but wound up physically enmeshing its molecules into those of the city, causing a destabilization of local reality. As Autobot scientist [[Wheeljack (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Wheeljack]] worked to contain the impending disaster, [[Prowl (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Prowl]] and [[Starscream (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Starscream]] got closer to the Titan, and were shocked when it awoke, crediting Starscream's presence as the reason. The Titan dubbed Starscream the conqueror who would unite Cybertron and thanked him for allowing him to awaken one last time, then bid the Transformers to depart so that they would not be destroyed along with it. The Titan was then seemingly obliterated as reality erupted in an antimatter explosion, {{storylink|Primus: All Good Things|All Good Things}} but somehow Metrotitan in fact wound on [[Earth]], beneath the surface of [[Monument Valley]]. {{storylink|All Hail Optimus Part 5: As Above...So Below|As Above...So Below}}

When the ''Lost Light'' found its way to the Missing Miracle Moon of Luna 1 via a portal in space, [[Hot Rod (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Rodimus]] and the rest of the away team discovered Tyrest's Titan graveyard and unsuccessfully tried to take refuge from Lockdown and crew inside of the huge relics. {{storylink|Remain in Light 2 of 5: House of Ambus|House of Ambus}} Tyrest was finally able to activate his Titan-made space bridge, but whether or not its destination was truly Cyberutopia remains a mystery. {{storylink|Remain in Light 5 of 5: This Calamitous Life|This Calamitous Life}}

Meanwhile, on a decaying [[Gorlam Prime]], [[Optimus Prime (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Orion Pax]] summoned a dormant Titan to rise from the ground in order to fight off [[Monstructor (G1)|Monstructor]]. However the combiner attack was a ruse, as the Decepticon scientist [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]] desired to bring the [[Ore-2]] and [[space bridge]] technology the Titan contained to Shockwave. Via the marooned Titan Hunter [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]] Jhiaxus took control of the Titan and teleported back to Cybertron. {{storylink|Homecoming (IDW)|Homecoming}} The Titan was brought to Shockwave's lair, the [[Crystal City]], {{storylink|Soundwaves (issue)|Soundwaves}} where its Ore-2 reacted with the [[Ore-14]] of the city, turning it into the undead "[[Necrotitan]]". {{storylink|Dark Dawn: Dark Cybertron Chapter 1|Dark Dawn}} The Necrotitan was eventually felled by a reinvigorated Metroplex. {{storylink|Finis Temporis: Dark Cybertron Chapter 9|Finis Temporis}} {{storylink|The Becoming: Dark Cybertron Chapter 10|The Becoming}}

With the Dark Cybertron crisis over, Metroplex integrated himself into the ruins of Iacon while his body recuperated from the effects of an [[alchemical virus]]. {{storylink|Earthfall Part 1: Hello Cruel World|Hello Cruel World}} {{storylink|World, Shut Your Mouth Part 1: Towards Peace|Towards Peace}} {{storylink|Earthfall Chapter 4: Full Fathom Five|Full Fathom Five}} As he recovered, he began scanning the galaxy, searching for his lost siblings. He located Chela on Eukaris, Navitas on Velocitron, and the dead Titan on Devisiun; when [[Windblade (G1)|Windblade]] tapped into his brain she received glimpses of these other Transformer colonists. {{storylink|Windblade issue 4|Windblade vol. 1 #4}} After Metroplex's spacebridge was repaired, Cybertron reached out to its forgotten Titan colonies to form the [[Council of Worlds]]. Several Titans played key roles in the formation of the Council: Windblade hacked into Navitas's brain module to manipulate a Velocitronian racetrack, {{storylink|Race Against the Light}} while on Eukaris she and Starscream were forced to put down the berserk Chela. {{storylink|Windblade vol. 2 issue 6|Windblade vol. 2 #6}}

The reunion of Cybertron and the colonies proved beneficial for the isolated Titans. Carcer's crew was able to begin ordering parts from Cybertron to repair him while Camien cityspeakers were able to conduct therapy on Navitas. {{storylink|07:00:00}}
[[File:LastLight Titanarmy.jpg|upright=2.4|thumb|left|Sentinel Prime will make Cybertron great again by returning it to the [[Transformers: Generation 2 (franchise)|neon era]].]]
Meanwhile on Earth, Optimus Prime and his forces combatted the machinations of [[Galvatron (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Galvatron]], and at the Autobot bivouac in [[Monument Valley]], Optimus sensed a presence. {{storylink|All Hail Optimus Part 4: It's Beginning To And Back Again|It's Beginning To And Back Again}} Soon thereafter, Optimus realized what he had felt, and reawoke Metrotitan. {{storylink|All Hail Optimus Part 5: As Above...So Below|As Above...So Below}} Subsequently, Metrotitan became the Cybertronian embassy on Earth, an [[Autobot City (G1)|Autobot City]]. As a result of [[Circuit (G1)|Circuit]] and [[Longtooth]] capturing Metrotitan's revival on live camera, opinion among the Cybertronian public and the Council of Worlds became more positive towards Optimus's activities, Optimus seemingly proving himself a divine true Prime. {{storylink|All Hail Optimus Part 6: No Fair Fights|No Fair Fights}} Pleased by this turn of events, Metrotitan broadcasted a beacon of information across the universe immortalizing the deeds of Optimus Prime–unaware that this same broadcast would awaken [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]]–in reality the diminuitive and ancient [[Titan Master]] [[Infinitus]]–slumbering beneath the ruins of [[Kaon (polity)|Kaon]]. Disgusted by what Cybertron had become in his absence, Sentinel cut a swathe through Cybertron and Earth as he hatched a new plan to wipe Cybertron clean and begin anew. {{storylink|The Last Autobot}} {{storylink|White Light}}
Joined by his fellow Titan Master [[Sovereign]], the two travelled to Luna 1 and the Titan graveyard. Using Blackrock as an amplifier, Sentinel awoke the entire population of the graveyard and ordered the [[zombie]] army to return to Cybertron via [[space bridge]] and kill everything that moved. {{storylink|Ten to Midnight}} Though Sentinel Prime was killed by the skeleton crew of Autobots on the moon — [[Fortress Maximus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Fortress Maximus]], [[Cerebros (G1)|Cerebros]], [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]], and [[Prowl (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Prowl]]–the vast majority of the undead Titans made it through the space bridge portal, materializing far away from Cybertron. {{storylink|Last Light}}

Several months later, the Titan army arrived near Cybertron, where Carcer's long-range scanners picked them up. The [[Council of Worlds]] convened to strategize against the upcoming threat and eventually decided to stand and fight against the menace. Metroplex transformed into his robot mode once more to do battle against his undead brethren, but even though he and the population of Iacon fought hard they were unable to stave off the endless waves of building-sized zombies. {{storylink|Ping}} The zombie army was ultimately defeated only after Windblade seized control of Vigilem and used his heavily armed body to rescue Metroplex and mop up the last stragglers of the invasion; though Vigilem perished, it wasn't before he disgorged the evil [[Liege Maximo]] from his innards, who promised to avenge the death of his Titan. {{storylink|Rubicon}}
[[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] was long believed to be a giant monster until [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] discovered a Titan's trademark brain module and space bridge within his head, confirming that Trypticon was actually a rare beast-shaped Titan. {{storylink|The Transformers: Salvation|Salvation}}
===''Titans Return'' marketing material===
When the universe was still forming, before Autobots or Decepticons existed, the Titans were created and sent out to discover the powers and mysteries of the universe. Each Titan was crewed by [[Titan Master]]s, tiny robot caretakers charged with up-keeping their systems. The Titan Masters also had a greater purpose: Each had a unique superpower they could grant to other Transformers, a gift intended to forge links with other civilizations they might discover. The Titans and their crews were eventually forgotten by all but a few power-hungry and entirely unsuccessful legend hunters. Until the Titans mysteriously returned, and the Titan Masters partnered up with Autobots and Decepticons alike.

Searching for info on the mysterious return of the Titans and their crews Alpha Trion followed a trail of clues to the "Beast Planet" Eukaris. Amid jungle covered buildings Alpha Trion and Titan Master Clobber located a mysterious ancient artifact that was linked to the Titans and Titan Masters. Mindwipe led Astrotrain, Wolfwire, and Titan Master Apeface in an ambush to steal the artifact.

Later, back on Cybertron, Soundwave led an all out assault. Scourge, Astrotrain, Skullsmasher, Laserbeak, Rumble, and Ravage, among others, pressed the attack while Powermaster Prime, Chromedome, Highbrow, Wheelie, Blaster, and Hardhead were among the defenders. The battle was interrupted when what first seemed like an earthquake attack by Rumble was actually the landscape itself transforming into the Legendary Titan: Fortress Maximus. {{storylink|Titans Return: The Power of the Titan Masters}}

[[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] was one of only a handful of Titans known to still exist. As a city, his ability to expand and grow was essentially limitless as he links up with other Transformers. Fortress Maximus himself is unique as the only Titan with the ability to link with a [[Titan Master]] partner.<ref>''Titans Return'' Fortress Maximus's on-package bio.</ref>
In the depths of space the monster Titan Trypticon and his Titan Master [[Wipe-Out|Necro]] traveled in starship mode between worlds, landing as a dark fortress or a terrible giant beast, bringing doom and ultimate destruction wherever they passed. Trypticon ever hungered for Titan Masters to devour the way another robot would Energon cubes, while the macabre Necro longs to harvest and devour the sparks of all Transformers who cross his dark path.<ref>Titans Return Trypticon on-package bio</ref>
==Notes==
*When originally introduced in IDW continuity, in the [[Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|2012 ''More than Meets the Eye'' annual]], the Titans were called "Metrotitans," repurposing the name of the [[Metrotitan (Zone)|''Zone'' Decepticon]] as that of an entire species. This was abandoned almost immediately, however: in the [[Primus: All Good Things|2012 ''Robots in Disguise'' annual]], released the same month, the species were called only "Titans," and the single Titan involved in the story was referred to as "The Metrotitan"; soon after, [[The End of the Beginning of the World|''Robots in Disguise'' #11]] dropped the "The" when referring to him, using the word as an individual's name. Nobody really noticed, though, and the subject didn't come up again until Metrotitan returned in the build-up to the ''[[Titans Return (comic)|Titans Return]]'' event, and his name being different to that of the species was clearly reiterated.
*The existence of thirteen Titan-stewarded colonies seems to imply a connection to the [[Thirteen]] Primes, and/or their Thirteen Tribes, who were established to have vanished from Cybertron in [[The Crucible|issue #34]]. Though later issues revealed that Solus Prime and Onyx Prime were commanders of two of the colony Titans, directly inspiring the cultures on Caminus and Eukaris respectively, it is evident that not all of the Thirteen each left with one of the Titans—the planets that Shockwave believed the Thirteen settled on were the worlds later seeded with [[Regenesis]] ores, and the Regenesis worlds we have seen are completely separate from the colony worlds. In addition, [[Nexus Prime]] died at the conclusion of the [[First Cybertronian Civil War]] while Alpha Trion remained on Cybertron for millions more years to come. The Mistress mentions that the thirteen colonies were an early attempt at [[Pax Cybertronia]]; presumably each Prime would control one world, but this plan fell through for reasons unknown.
==Notes==
*According to the author,<ref>https://twitter.com/wordmongerer/status/716433907621736448 </ref> this story takes place circa [[2035]], 30 years after ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'' and 300 years before ''Beast Wars''. It also precedes "[[Dawn of Future's Past]]".<ref>http://wordmongerer.tumblr.com/post/142758963250/this-past-weekend-my-first-transformers-story </ref>
* We're going to remind you now that the ''Beast Wars'' cartoon did not establish a definitive in-universe history for itself, merely making it highly plausible that events closely resembling the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|Sunbow cartoon]] or the [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|Marvel comic]] happened offscreen. "Dawn of the Predacus" takes the ever-popular G1-cartoon-as-background route which most ''Beast Wars'' tie-ins have utilized.

===Continuity notes===
* Ironhide references [[The Transformers: The Movie|having been killed]] by G1 Megatron before.
* The profile card for Optimus Primal's BotCon 2006 toy stated that he was a veteran of "the last Great War" which resulted in the defeat of the Predacons.
* The profile card for Razorclaw's BotCon 2009 toy (tying into his appearance in "[[Dawn of Future's Past]]") stated that he was doublecrossed and assassinated by the Tripredacus Council. However, see ''Continuity errors'' below.
* Unicron's head is still in orbit of Cybertron following the events of ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]''.
* The destruction of the moon explains its absence by the time we see Cybertron in ''Beast Machines''.
* Some trends that would be in evidence in the Beast Wars--Tarantulas's manipulation of Megatron, Waspinator's terrible luck--are seen here for the "first" time.
* Megatron is seen reading a [[Covenant of Primus]] shortly before announcing his name.
* Many of the characters are not wearing faction symbols. The author has stated that clear factions (especially on the Decepticon side) had fallen down after the events of "[[The Rebirth]]" and Autobots and Decepticons at the time of the story do not necessarily correspond to future Maximals and Predacons.
* Rattrap seems to give Optimus Primal his name here, as a mocking nickname in reference to his resemblance to Optimus Prime and their mission from the Primal Council.

===Transformers references===
* Magnaboss references the "such heroic nonsense" line from the movie.
* The [[Swarm (G2)|Swarm]] is mentioned.
* One of the Decepticons under Megatron's command is [[Terradive (TF 2010)|''Transformers'' (2010) Terradive]].
* The [[universal greeting]] is referenced.
* Cicadacon laying down the Decepticon sigil echoes Optimus Prime's surrender in "[[Surrender!]]"
* Ramhorn mocks the inconsistent units of time used in the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|G1]] and ''[[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'' cartoons.
* Optimus Primal tells the yet-unnamed Rattrap to shut his "trap."
* This would not be the last time Primal would have [[Other Voices, Part 1|an encounter with Unicron's head...]]
* Plans for [[Magmatron]]'s body and Ravage's [[transwarp cruiser]] are seen.
* Unnamed 'bots who resemble pre-beast forms of [[Air Hammer]] and [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] are seen walking around in the epilogue.

===Real-life references===
* Ironhide refers to Megatron as a "[[Knockoff|knock-off]]."

===Continuity errors===
* The profile card for the "Dawn of Future's Past" version of Generation 1 [[Razorclaw (G1)|Razorclaw]] says that after the defeat of the Decepticons in the Great War, he led the nascent Predacon faction against the Autobots until the Tripredacus Council seemingly assassinated him. In addition, [[Divebomb (G1)|Divebomb]] appears alive in "Dawn of Future's Past", and the profile card for "Dawn of Future's Past" [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] says that Divebomb recruited Ravage to the Predacons. Here, however, Razorclaw's entire team is killed off by Predacus in the final battle of the Great War before any of that can happen.
* The stasis pods in this story are labeled with the names of the characters inside, whereas the pods in the show weren't (with the obvious exception of [[Rampage (BW)|Protoform X]]). It's possible that this is simply a change that occurred over the next 300 years, but why?
* The death of [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]], a being composed of black, yellow, and red mammals and birds, is commemorated with... a purple insect face?

====Contentious continuity====
To put it ''very'' mildly, this story was controversial within the fandom--aside from the admittedly subjective "BW isn't supposed to be all about G1" complaints, many fans perceived it as stomping all over the continuity it was supposed to fit into like, well, a combiner stomping on Waspinator. Some of these issues have their origins in plot points that author John-Paul Bove had in mind but either didn't have time for or didn't realize were unclear, which he has gone on to clarify [http://wordmongerer.tumblr.com/post/142758963250/this-past-weekend-my-first-transformers-story on his Tumblr]. Bove has stated that the story was originally meant to be part of a mini-series set after "The Rebirth," so presumably some or all of these points would have been clearer in that context.

* This story predates the existence of Maximals and Predacons, and there is no indication that any sort of downsizing has taken place yet, yet the ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'' is already in service, apparently scaled to G1-era Transformers.
** According to Bove, after the downsizing, G1-scaled ships and buildings were retrofitted to suit smaller inhabitants. In particular, each deck of the ''Axalon'' would have been split into several smaller ones, making it a "larger" ship from the Maximals' point of view.
* Protoforming technology is established as a weapon of war, with stasis pods as a form of life support for its victims. Optimus Primal takes possession of some of these stasis pods (stating that he'll "do what we can for them"), implying that the stasis pods said to contain his Maximal crew on the cartoon are actually a bunch of protoformed Autobots and Decepticons he's been carrying around in his ship for 300 years and that the blank protoform who becomes his new body from "[[Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)]]" onward is actually somebody's corpse.
** Bove writes that this was only meant to be the ''beginning'' of protoform and stasis pod technology, and by the time of the cartoon it would have evolved into the usage the cartoon suggested, with only ''some'' of the ''Axalon''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s pods being old Autobots and Decepticons (the rest having been restored to their old selves).
* The sight of Generation 1 Inferno becoming a protoform which is then labeled as (naturally) "Inferno" suggests that his protoform became [[Inferno (BW)|''Beast Wars'' Inferno]]. Which wouldn't really be a continuity error, but it ''would'' be incredibly stupid.
** Bove stated at [[BotCon 2016]] that this was was deliberately left open to the reader's interpretation, and that he hasn't ruled out G1 Inferno's return if the story were to be continued.
* There appears to be at least one of Ravage's transwarp cruiser, which will be "experimental" 300 years later, flying around.
** Bove explains that it's just a similar design, similar to the various ''[[Star Trek|Enterprises]]''.

However, on some points his explanations fall short:

* Many Maximals and Predacons from the cartoon, plus some who didn't appear in the cartoon, existed concurrently with their legendary "energon guzzler" "ancient ancestors." Bove ''tries'' to explain this away by pointing out that most of them aren't seen to ''interact'' with any Autobots or Decepticons, but that still puts them in the same time frame as characters who were supposedly part of the distant past.
* In particular, many participants in the Beast Wars were present for the end of the Great War, with some playing rather prominent roles during the war's end:
** ''Beast Wars'' Megatron seizes a role of authority following Galvatron's demise, bossing Predaking around.
** Tigatron and Airazor are incredibly important Autobots, to the point that Prowl says that Tigatron is "respected by all sides for his desire for peace," sending him as an emissary to the Decepticons due to his widespread reputation. This echoes his later personality traits when awoken on prehistoric Earth and he would again be sent as an emissary by the Vok... but apparently nobody will make the connection.
* Airazor ends up in a stasis pod labeled with her name and Tigatron does not, which makes the status quo of "Dawn of Future's Past" difficult to extrapolate. Apparently at some point she was brought back, but without her memories, as "Chromia Pilot 10", and also Tigatron won't recognize her. Which isn't impossible, but ''wow'' she has the ''worst'' luck.
* In "[[The Agenda (Part 1)]]," the Tripredacus Council talk about having "worked secretly towards the day where we might rise up and take what is rightfully ours", "ever since the Autobots defeated our Decepticon ancestors," but we learn in this story that the Tripredacus Council WERE those Decepticon ancestors and that they defeated ''themselves'', on purpose. Bove's explanation is essentially to separate those two quotes, which makes the first one fit nicely (taking what is rightfully theirs as ''first-generation Cybertronians'', rather than as heirs to the Decepticons) but the second one remains nonsense in light of this story. To be fair, it doesn't really jibe with Tarantulas's claim of having different origins in "[[Other Victories]]," either.

===Other notes===
* This book was produced by [[IDW Publishing]] instead of [[Fun Publications]].
* Unit-3 is asked to "fill some big shoes" and later becomes a leg (and foot) for Magnaboss. Ahaha. Haha. Ha.

===Transformers references===

===Real-life references===
* Ironhide refers to Megatron as a "[[Knockoff|knock-off]]."

===Continuity errors===

====Contentious continuity====

* Rattrap really shouldn't know Optimus Primal yet. Bove defends this by saying nobody ever said how long they'd been serving together, but while nobody establishes a ''precise'' timeframe, "[[Beast Wars (Part 1)]]" makes it abundantly clear that Rattrap is new to Primal's command, and on top of that strongly suggests that Primal himself is new to command. There's some wiggle room, but it's hard to argue that there are ''three centuries'' of it.

===Other notes===
* This book was produced by [[IDW Publishing]] instead of [[Fun Publications]].
* Unit-3 is asked to "fill some big shoes" and later becomes a leg (and foot) for Magnaboss. Ahaha. Haha. Ha.
==Notes==

===Continuity notes===
* Ironhide references [[The Transformers: The Movie|having been killed]] by G1 Megatron before
* The profile card for Optimus Primal's BotCon 2006 toy stated that he was a veteran of the last Great War which resulted in the defeat of the Predacons.
* The profile card for Razorclaw's BotCon 2009 toy (tying into his appearance in "[[Dawn of Future's Past]]") stated that he was doublecrossed and assassinated by the Tripredacus Council. However, see below.
* The downsizing to more energy efficient modes referenced in the show takes place here.
* The origin of Protoforming technology is established here.
* The Predacons take their faction name in honor of the G1 Predacons
* Unicron's head is still in orbit of Cybertron following the events of [[The Transformers: The Movie]]
* The destruction of the moon explains its absence by the time we see Cybertron in Beast Wars.
* This would not be the last time Primal would have an encounter with Unicron's head...
* Optimus Primal is a low status exploration and science ship captain during the war.
* Galvatron, Optimus Prime and Perceptor are all killed off screen.
* Plans for Magmatron's body and Ravage's Transwarp Cruiser are seen.
* Tarantulas' manipulation of Megatron started long before the Beast Wars
* Megatron's dragon obsession is in evidence here
* Megatron is seen reading a Covenant of Primus shortly before announcing his name
* Waspinator appears to have always been accident prone

===Transformers references===
* Magnaboss references the "such heroic nonsense" line from the movie and gives Prowl and Ironhide a chance for some catharsis...
* The [[Swarm (G2)|Swarm]] is mentioned.
* One of the Decepticons under Megatron's command is [[Terradive (TF 2010)|''Transformers'' (2010) Terradive]].
* The Universal Greeting is referenced.
* Cicadacon laying down the Decepticon sigil echoes Optimus Prime's surrender in Marvel G1 [[Surrender!]]
* The inconsistent units of time used in the G1 Cartoon and Beast Wars are made fun of by Ramhorn

===Real-life references===

Ironhide refers to BW Megatron as a "Knock-Off" referring to the practice of cheap, low quality copies of official toys.

===Dicussion Points===

* Larry DiTillio had differing views on the origins of Tarantulas and the Tripredacus Council and, through the creation of Transmatter, Unicronian technology as well as G2 tech is used in part to unlock First Generation Transformers. How Marvel G2 and Sunbow G1 continuity can co-exist is unclear but was never clear how Marvel G1 and Sunbow G1 events were both referenced in Beast Wars itself.
* Ironhide and Prowl are alive at this point in the story despite their death in [[Transformers: The Movie]]. Ironhide makes reference to his return from the dead but not how. Returning from the dead is not without precedent in Transformers fiction however and both Ironhide and Prowl were established as being back as part of Magnaboss in Beast Wars.
* The author has stated that the story was originally part of a mini series that would feature events following G1 Season 4 and the return of Galvatron and the end of the Golden Age. Pretender and Micromaster technology would have been shown.
* Many of the characters are not wearing faction symbols. The author has stated that clear factions (especially on the Decepticon side) had fallen down post the events of Season 4 and not every future Maximal and Predacon is an Autobot and Decepticon at the time of the story though they may be supporters/sympathisers. <ref>http://wordmongerer.tumblr.com/post/142758963250/this-past-weekend-my-first-transformers-story </ref>
*Unit-3 is asked to fill some big shoes and later becomes one of the legs and feet of Magnaboss.

*Rattrap seems to ''nickname'' Optimus Primal within a scene in this book making reference both to his resemblance to Optimus Prime and to mock their mission from the Primal Council.
*Primal tells Rattrap (as yet unnamed) to shut his "trap" as a possible nod to his future name he gives himself in Beast Wars Part 1.
*This story predates the existence of Maximals and Predacons, and there is no indication that any sort of downsizing has taken place yet. According to the author ships like the ''Axalon'' as well as many buildings were scaled to Generation 1-sized Transformers and then retrofitted post war to accommodate more decks and smaller inhabitants. <ref>http://wordmongerer.tumblr.com/post/142758963250/this-past-weekend-my-first-transformers-story </ref>
* Many Maximals and Predacons from the cartoon, plus some who didn't appear in the cartoon, existed concurrently with some of the Autobots and Decepticons of old, including several major Generation 1 characters. However, only BW Megatron has any real interaction with Decepticons and Autobots.
*Many who eventually ended up in the Beast Wars were present at the end of the Great War, with some playing rather prominent roles during the war's end:
**''Beast Wars'' Megatron seizes a role of authority following Galvatron's demise, bossing Predaking around.
**Tigatron and Airazor are incredibly important Autobots, to the point that Prowl says that Tigatron is "respected by all sides for his desire for peace," sending him as an emissary to the Decepticons due to his widespread reputation. This echos his later personality traits when awoken on prehistoric Earth and he would again be sent as an emissary by the Vok.
*Protoforming technology is established as initially a weapon of war. Stasis pods (or a similar technology - see Continuity Errors) were initially used as a form of life support for Autobots and Decepticons who were critically damaged by [[transmatter]] the [[Tripredacus Council]] members weapon derived in part from [[Unicron]], with "protoform" now describing a quantum state of being suspended between dimensions and realities. Optimus Primal takes possession of some of these stasis pods, stating that he'll "do what we can for them." Based on the use of Protoforms as a means of stasis in the cartoon it is clear that the technology was mastered between the events of this book and the cartoon. The author states that Optimus Primal would be key in unlocking that technology but that at least some of the stasis pods on the Axalon would be protoforms that he had not managed to save. This also answers an unintentional continuity error within the cartoon that when characters who awaken on Earth (with their entire life histories wiped) Primal and others do not react to the loss of their former colleagues and friends. <ref>http://wordmongerer.tumblr.com/post/142758963250/this-past-weekend-my-first-transformers-story </ref>
*The Tripredacus Council's use of transmatter to change a transformer to a protoform that can then assume a new form is the first use of the technology that would become commonplace during the Beast Wars.
*Transmatter, possessing biological and technological quantum realities makes the organic aspects of their later beast forms a logical extension.

*Airazor is in one of these stasis pods (labeled "Airazor") and Tigatron is not, which makes the status quo of "Dawn of Future's Past" difficult to extrapolate. In "Dawn of Future's Past" Airazor is going by a different name and both she and Tigatron look very different implying that Airazor is brought back but not as Airazor.
*The sight of Generation 1 Inferno becoming a protoform opens the possibility that his protoform could be the basis for [[Inferno (BW)|''Beast Wars'' Inferno]]. However, the author stated at [[BotCon 2016]] that this is not necessarily a fact as it was deliberately left open to the reader's interpretation and hasn't ruled out G1 Inferno's return if the story were to be continued.
*In "[[The Agenda (Part 1)]]," the Tripredacus Council talk about having "worked secretly towards the day where we might rise up and take what is rightfully ours", "ever since the Autobots defeated our Decepticon ancestors," which is later contradicted by Tarantulas in "Other Victories" where he states that he and the Tripredacus Council have different origins to Autobots and Decepticons. In Dawn of the Predacus we learn that the Tripredacus Council predate the factions as "First Generation Cybertronians" though they have served the Decepticons.
*Unnamed 'bots that resemble pre-beast forms of Air Hammer and Blackarachnia are seen walking around in an epilogue set after the signing of the Pax Cybertronia.
*The death of [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]], is the origin of the faction name used in Beast Wars. The purple insect face iconography used by the Predacons is unexplained.

===Continuity Errors===

*The profile card for the "Dawn of Future's Past" version of Generation 1 Razorclaw says that after the defeat of the Decepticons in the Great War, he led the nascent Predacon faction against the Autobots until the Tripredacus Council seemingly assassinated him. In addition, Divebomb himself appears alive in "Dawn of Future's Past", and the profile card for "Dawn of Future's Past" [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] says that Divebomb recruited Ravage to the Predacons. Those events do not play out here, where Razorclaw's entire team is killed off by Predacus, in the final battle of the Great War. The profile cards have not always connected smoothly with the published fiction and it is unclear if the Funpub Bio Cards connect to the IDW continuity at all.
*The stasis pods in this story are labelled whereas the pods in the show weren't labeled with who was inside them, aside from the obvious exception of [[Rampage (BW)|Protoform X]]. However 300 years passes between this story and the events of Beast Wars and the pods Optimus Primal loads look more like a streamlined coffin than the pods used in the show (which have smaller windows and have kibble attached to the side) so may not be one and the same.
===Other trivia===
*This book was produced by [[IDW Publishing]] instead of [[Fun Publications]].
