Fear or Courage: Changed a sentence because it made it sound like there was a Mainframe series in discussion when we have no evidence of that.

{{disambig3|Transtech}}

'''''Transtech''''' was originally planned as the follow-up to the [[Beast Machines: Transformers (franchise)|''Beast Machines'' franchise]]. It would have begun in summer 2001, but was instead replaced by ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 franchise)|Robots in Disguise]]'' while [[Hasbro]] geared up for ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]''.

In 2008, the [[Transformers Collectors' Club]] used the ''Transtech'' designs as inspiration for the ''[[Transformers: TransTech|TransTech]]'' universe.

==Fiction==
Story-wise, not much is known about the original concept. It likely would have picked up on [[technorganic]] [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] following the events of ''Beast Machines''. It's also likely another [[Mainframe Entertainment]] CGI animated series would have supported the line, though no evidence of this has ever surfaced.

==Toys==
[[Image:TransScream.gif|right|150px|thumb|Nightscream would have been spared a lot of hate had he looked like this in BM.]]
The characters transformed into Cybertronic vehicles that in many cases had animal-like features/deco. Cheetor was a Cybertronic race-car with a cheetah-like paint job, for instance, and Prime (confusingly invoking [[Optimus Primal (BW)|Optimus Primal]]) was a truck whose front end looked like an ape's face. Designs were done by [[Draxhall Jump]] and had somewhat less traditional robot modes (Cheetor had large hoop "wheels" for shoulders and feet, for instance) and didn't always resemble older versions of the character very closely. The overall aesthetic was somewhere in-between ''Beast Machines''' odder moments and the new 2007 movie designs. Many of these designs were first shown at [[BotCon 2002]] (apparently without Hasbro's permission, as they were pulled from the booth halfway through the show) and subsequently made available online.

Online retailer [[BigBadToyStore]] posted a preliminary retailer list of early 2001 ''Transformers'' product in December 2000.<ref>http://web.archive.org/web/20001206140100/http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/news.asp</ref> In addition to revealing several unproduced and delayed ''Beast Machines'' toys, the listing indicated the intent of releasing ''Transtech'' in the summer of 2001 launching with 4 deluxes (Shockwave, Starscream, Cheetor and Silverbolt) along side 2 mega class figures and 2 Ultra class figures (the requisite Optimus and Megatron). A second wave consisting of a deluxe Rattrap and another unnamed deluxe was due shortly after this initial wave.

[[Image:TransCharge.gif|right|150px|thumb|Depth Charge replaces "[[Double Pretender|Bandito Spider]]" as coolest unmade TF ever.]]
The line would have included Maximals carried over from ''Beast Machines'':

*[[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]]
*[[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]]
*[[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream]]
*[[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]]
*[[Rattrap (BW)|Rattrap]]

A returning ''Beast Wars'' character:

*[[Depth Charge (BW)|Depth Charge]]

Returning Generation 1 characters:

*[[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]
*[[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]
*[[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]

[[Image:Starscream-transtech.jpg|right|150px|thumb|So close, yet so far away...]]
[[File:TranstechMegatron-StyleBoard.jpg|thumb|150px|Man, TransTech Megatron would be pure evil. He's stolen Gundam's Neue Ziel for a body!]]
And at least one new character

*[[Immorticon (TransTech)|Immorticon]]

Design sketches for a [[Megatron (disambiguation)|Megatron]] and a [[Scavenger (disambiguation)|Scavenger]] of uncertain identity also exist.

The toyline got to the early [[Prototype|hardcopy prototype]] stage, and some prototypes, including Cheetor, Starscream, and Prime, have surfaced. None of them apparently reached a stage of production where real, usable molds were created, and so future release is extremely unlikely.

When Draxhall Jump made their design sketches for Transtech available, they also included a number of designs from other lines (such as GI Joe), but put them all under the "Transtech" header for their web page, causing a bit of confusion. This artwork included a work-up sketch of [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] as a souped-up blue boom-box, which is often mistaken to be a member of the Transtech line.

{{canceledtoy}}

==Cancellation==
The reasons for ''Transtech''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s cancellation remain unknown for certain, though over the years, a number of possible reasons have been speculated, among them: negative fan reaction to ''Beast Machines'', conflict with Mainframe, economic difficulties due to poor performance by other Hasbro toylines at the time (notably the significant under-performance of the first ''[[Star Wars (franchise)|Star Wars]]'' prequel), differences with Takara, or simply a desire to go in a new direction. The most likely explanation is not a singular culprit, but a number of corresponding culprits, perhaps culminating in the closing of Hasbro's Cincinnati offices and departures of staff, followed by the subsequent relocation to Hasbro's central offices in Rhode Island.

The cancellation of ''Transtech'' led to the Japanese ''Car Robots'' cartoon and toyline [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 franchise)|being imported]] as a stopgap measure while Hasbro and Takara began to work together to jointly create and launch the ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'' line.

And look how ''that'' turned out.

==Notes==
* According to the creative staff of ''[[Transformers Animated (franchise)|Transformers Animated]]'' at [[BotCon 2008]], ''Animated'' [[Blurr (Animated)|Blurr]]'s design is partially inspired by ''Transtech'' Cheetor, most notably the hubless wheels making up part of his feet.
* Though the toyline was cancelled, several of the designs have been adapted into other toylines. Notably [[Megatron (Armada)|''Armada'' Megatron]], [[Scavenger (Armada)|''Armada'' Scavenger]] and [[Landmine (Energon)|''Energon'' Landmine]].
* It may have followed up ''Beast Machines'', but BM's head honcho Bob Skir had never heard of Transtech until 2013.<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DaZTNszyGU Moonbase 2 interview with Bob Skir], 1:33:20 to 1:33:44</ref>
* The designs for Toy Biz's ''Marvel Megamorphs'' transforming superhero toyline were done by Draxhall Jump as well. These designs strongly resemble their ''Transtech'' work, specifically with [[Hulk]] using Immorticon's design and [[Iron Man]] using Starscream's. Unfortunately, they don't resemble good toys, suffering from the same drawbacks most transforming toys from companies not used to making transforming toys do. For example: they suck.
'''With Blacker injured after the Autobots' last battle, Star Saber is forced to brave his own injuries to face down Deathsaurus's latest trap.'''

==Synopsis==
[[Image:DeadlyBattle Autobots and Blacker.jpg|thumb|left|200px| "Oh, Primus! Chest-bursters!"<br>"Yeah, I think you over-did the anaesthetics, doc."]]
At the [[Autobot]]s' [[Rocket Base|Shuttle Base]], the [[Rescue Patrol Team]] performs the latest check-up on [[Blacker]], who is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in his last battle. Blacker is more concerned with his own failure than with getting better, which doesn't surprise [[Star Saber (Victory)|Star Saber]], who tells him to concentrate on resting. As they talk, [[Laster]] radios through with a communiqué from [[Ginrai|God Ginrai]], who wants to offer his sympathies to Blacker. The Autobots' reduction in fighting power is ruefully discussed, and Ginrai offers his services if they need him.

[[Image:Deathsaurus vs leozack.jpg|right|200px|thumb| "You will obey, Leozack. Get the point?"<br>"Just kill me!"]]
Elsewhere, aboard the ''[[Thunder Arrow]]'', [[Leozack]] studies a map of [[Earth]], trying to choose the [[Decepticon]]s' next target. [[Guyhawk]] arrives to inform him that he has assembled the rest of the [[Breastforce]] to hunt down [[Greatshot]], but Leozack is not happy that he has done so without his permission, and for so trivial and personal a goal. An argument nearly breaks out between the two, until [[Jallguar]] arrives to tell Leozack that [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]] wishes to see him. The "meeting" doesn't go very well for Leozack—he is immediately pounced on by Deathsaurus's [[Breast Animal]]s and has a sword jammed in his face. Deathsaurus announces that up until now, he has overlooked all of Leozack's treachery, but that it is time for things to change. Faced with either swearing total loyalty or death, Leozack capitulates and pledges himself to Deathsaurus utterly.

[[Image:DeadlyBattle Star Saber with bomb.jpg|thumb|left|200px|"Where's [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] when you need him?!"]]
Soon, word reaches the Autobots of an attack by the Breastforce on their Asian garrison headquarters. Knowing that there is no energy stored there or for miles around, the Autobots realized that the attack is clearly a trap, but Star Saber decides to face the villains head on despite his own injuries, and heads out with the Rescue Team, leaving the [[Brainmaster]]s to guard the base and protect Blacker. Laster tries to hide from Blacker the fact that anything is going on, but although he doesn't believe him, his injuries prevent him from investigating any further.

At the Asian headquarters, the Breastforce press their attack until Star Saber and the Rescue Team arrive. While the Rescues do their thing, Leozack, Guyhawk and [[Hellbat (Victory)|Hellbat]] dazzle Star Saber with some aerial optic trickery, and chain bombs to him. Star Saber separates from the [[V-Star]] to try and remove the bombs, but the Breastforce keep him busy until the explosives detonate, sending Star Saber and the V-Star crashing down into the mountains nearby. The Breastforce pursue him and continue their attack, forcing him to combine with the damaged V-Star, in response to which villains merge into [[Liokaiser]].

Back at the Shuttle Base, Blacker finally wrings the truth from Laster and [[Braver]] and demands to know why they didn't accompany Star Saber. They explain that Star Saber instructed them to stay for Blacker's sake. This leads the proud Autobot to pull rank on Braver and Laster and order them into battle, leaving him to protect the Shuttle Base himself.

[[Image:DeadlyBattle Star Saber Deathstatue.jpg|thumb|right|200px|I never knew Deathsaurus had such slender ankles!]]
Star Saber and Liokaiser's battle heats up as the Autobot leader disarms his opponent. Liokaiser flees into the midst of a nearby field of ancient statues and activates his invisibility powers, hiding amongst the statues and baiting Star Saber to attack. When Star Saber strikes one of the statues, it violently explodes, setting off a chain reaction that collapses the valley and sends the [[Supreme Commander]] tumbling into an underground chamber. There, Star Saber is immediately attacked by another statue, but this one is Deathsaurus in disguise, who is ready for another go-round with his [[Living-Metal-Destroying Cannon]]. [[Jean Minakaze|Jean]] and [[Holi]] arrive to watch the battle from above as Liokaiser drops a boulder on Star Saber, pinning him for Deathsaurus.

[[Image:DeadlyBattle Ginrai fatally wounded.jpg|thumb|left|200px|"Kiss me, Hardy"<br>"... neither of us has lips."]]
As the Living-Metal-Destroying Cannon is primed, Holi attempts to contact the Shuttle Base to summon help, and as the trigger is pulled, a shadow leaps in front of the blast, protecting Star Saber. God Ginrai has arrived! Weakened by the blast, Ginrai lunges at Deathsaurus with a sword and is overpowered, taking another hit from the cannon. Star Saber manages to break free of the boulder, but is seized by Liokaiser, and forced to watch as Deathsaurus bears down on Ginrai, about to deliver the killing blast. Luckily, Ginrai is able to surprise Deathsaurus with his God Cannon, blinding him and causing him to fire wildly, giving Star Saber his chance to escape Liokaiser's grip. Star Saber races into action, and slices Deathsaurus's cannon in two with his Saber Blade, before impaling the Decepticon leader for good measure. Deathsaurus still has some fight in him, but when Braver and Laster arrive to tip the odds, Liokaiser persuades his leader to retreat to fight another day. The cavern begins to cave in, covering the villains' escape route, but as Laster and Braver go to help Holi and Jean down from the crumbling rocks, God Ginrai collapses into Star Saber's arms. As Star Saber asks if his friend is all right, Ginrai chokes out that "[[Godmaster]]s are... immortal..." and passes out...
==Notes==
===Animation and technical errors===
*As Deathsaurus pins Leozack down with his sword, his helmet is completely blue except for his crest.
*The red arrows on the bombs attached to the V-Star change direction repeatedly. In closeups, they tend to point outward, but in wider shots of Star Saber trying to remove them, the arrows point inward.
*A reverse of the subtitling error from the previous episode happens on the Shout Factory release of this one. Up until this point, Blacker has been consistently referred to by the name of his European Motorvator counterpart, Gripper. In this episode, it's switched back to his Japanese name the entire time.
*Also from the Shout Factory release, the timing of the subtitles on this particular episode are noticeably off by a second.

===Continuity errors===
*God Ginrai says that he was alerted to the battle by an SOS he picked up. We're not seriously expected to believe that that's the SOS Holi sent less than ''eight seconds before his arrival'', are we? And if not... who sent it?

===Continuity notes===
*Blacker's severe injuries occurred in the previous episode, while Star Saber may still be recovering from wounds suffered over the last three or four episodes.
*Deathsaurus's Living-Metal-Destroying Cannon was previously seen in "[[Resurrection!? The Decepticon Fortress]]".
*Back in ''Super-God Masterforce'', Ginrai could have easily healed from an injury of this severity, and he stills seems to think he should be able to, given his belief that "Godmasters are immortal." Evidently, though, the loss of his human component and his [[Chōkon Power|Jinchōkon]] has left him a lot weaker than he used to be.

===Real world references===
* The ancient statues in this episode appear to be inspired by the [[wikipedia:Terracotta Army|Terracotta Army]] of China.

===Foreign localization===
'''English'''
:*''Title:'' "'''A Battle of Life and Death'''" ([[Omni Productions]] dub)
::* While threatening Leozack, Deathsaurus doesn't make any mention of a new plan.
::* Star Saber says he'll call on Braver and Laster for help if necessary, rather than the Multiforce.
::* Blacker accuses Laster of lying when the latter claims there's nothing wrong.

===Trivia===
* This episode firmly establishes that there are other Autobot forces on Earth, which makes sense, since up until now we've been asked to believe that less than a dozen Autobots have been patrolling the entire planet. The previous episode first suggested this in a somewhat bizarre, disjointed scene.
* How the heck does Deathsaurus fit inside that statue?
* Star Saber doesn't come off very well in this episode. He knowingly flies into a trap (the attack on the Asian base), lets himself get lured into another trap (lured by Liokaiser into the statue field), falls for yet another ambush (Deathsaurus' surprise attack) and when he's held dead to rights by Deathsaurus can only spout nonsense on how treacherous the Decepticon is. Sore loser indeed.
'''With Blacker injured after the Autobots' last battle, Star Saber is forced to brave his own injuries to face down Deathsaurus's latest trap.'''

==Synopsis==

'''The Brainmasters stumble into a Decepticon trap in the desert, but luckily for them, Greatshot is on hand to help.'''

==Synopsis==
[[Image:CrisisAmbushDesert Greatshot ThunderArrow sea.jpg|thumb|200px|left|Oh, like what guy ''doesn't'' have mornings like this?]]
Deciding to visit the [[Autobot]]s on [[Earth]], the weary [[Greatshot]] arrives on the planet and spends the night sleeping in a seaside cave. Awakening the next morning, he looks out over the ocean... only to have the ''[[Thunder Arrow]]'' suddenly burst out of the water!

Meanwhile, the Autobots, currently stationed on the Tibetan Plateau, receive word of an attack by the [[Dinoforce]] on an oil field in the desert. With [[Blacker]] confident that the Dinoforce will pose little problem, the [[Brainmaster]]s head out aboard [[Galaxy Shuttle]] with the [[Rescue Patrol Team]], while [[Star Saber (Victory)|Star Saber]] remains on standby in the [[Shuttle Base]]. [[Gōryū]] immediately spots the airborne Autobots as they fly towards the oil field, but merely smirks, instructing the Dinoforce to carry on draining energy. The reason for his complacency soon makes itself clear, as [[Killbison]] and [[Drillhorn]] burst out of the sand and blast the unsuspecting Galaxy Shuttle out of the sky. As the Brainmasters climb out of the wreck and return fire, the two [[Breastforce]] members turn tail, and the Autobot trio quickly transform and give chase. This, it turns out, is all part of the plan, as [[Laster]] and [[Braver]] find themselves unable to manoeuvre in the deep sand, leaving them wipe open for enemy fire. As a dune buggy, Blacker is still able to move freely, and occupies Killbison while his team-mates transform and tackle the burrowing Drillhorn.

[[Image:CrisisAmbushDesert Fire vs Kakuryu.jpg|thumb|200px|right]]
Back at the oil field, the Rescue Team formulate a plan to rescue the captive workers, who are being guarded by the sleeping [[Kakuryū]]. The approach they decide to take is a direct one—[[Fire]] transforms to vehicle mode and rolls right up to the prehistoric pea-brain, who awakens just in time to be blinded by a deluge of foam from Fire's cannons. The workers are rushed to safety aboard Galaxy Shuttle, as the foam-covered Kakuryū staggers away. He eventually finds his way to Gōryū, and requests permission to wash himself off.

[[Image:CrisisAmbushDesert form Road Caesar.jpg|thumb|200px|left]]
Out in the desert, Laster and Braver fall afoul of Drillhorn's subterranean scheme, as he lures them into a patch of loose sand, where they promptly sink up to their waists. As Blacker arrives to help, but can't because he will sink too if he transforms, [[Leozack]] and [[Guyhawk]] emerge from beneath the sand, cackling over the successful deployment of their plan. The Brainmasters merge into [[Road Caesar]] in an attempt to use his strength to break free, but the gestalt only winds up sinking faster, unable to even focus his energy thanks to the hail of Ice Needles Guyhawk rains down upon him. The trio are separated back into their component parts, and Blacker finds Killbison's blaster jammed into the side of his head. Thankfully, Greatshot chooses this moment to arrive, and Guyhawk immediately takes to the sky in search of revenge. Greatshot tricks him into colliding with Leozack, and the two villains are grounded, but they keep up the fight... or rather, they run as fast possible to avoid being run over by the six-changer's car mode. Suddenly, a chasm opens up in the desert sand and Greatshot tumbles in, finding himself on top of the rising ''Thunder Arrow'', which had concealed itself beneath the sand.

[[Image:CrisisAmbushDesert Blacker flesh wound.jpg|thumb|200px|right|All together now: "It's just a flesh wound!"]]
[[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]] appears to confront Greatshot himself, impaling his arm with an arrow from his [[Breast Animal]] weapon. [[Hellbat (Victory)|Hellbat]] and [[Jallguar]] also appear and attack Greatshot from both sides, but at the last moment, Blacker leaps to his aid, and has his arm blown off in the effort. With one Autobot injured and two buried in sand, things look bad... but luckily, [[Jean Minakaze|Jean]] has called on Star Saber for help, and the [[Supreme Commander]] comes swooping down out of the sky to quickly airlift Braver and Laster out of the sand so they can get Blacker to safety. While Star Saber transforms to robot mode and clashes with Deathsaurus atop the ''Thunder Arrow'', Greatshot hacks his way through the Breastforce, forcing them to pull out—much to Guyhawk's frustration. With his opponents beating a retreat, Greatshot goes to Star Saber's aid, and together, the pair cripple the ''Thunder Arrow'' and leave Deathsaurus with no option but the better part of valor. At the same time, Braver and Laster leave Blacker in the care of the Rescue Team and return to the oil field, quickly disposing of the Dinoforce by blowing up their [[energon cube]]s.

As the Autobots get back together after the battle, everyone crowds around the injured Blacker. Although he downplays the seriousness of his wounds, he admits that he was too careless in his strategy. Star Saber prefers to think of him as brave, but he can see that the Decepticons are growing desperate, and that Autobot resolve must tighten.
==Notes==
===Animation and technical errors===
* Normally, the Brainmasters and Breastforce are about the same size in vehicle mode, but Killbison is almost twice as large as Blacker when he's chasing him around.
* As Blacker blocks the attacks meant from Greatshot, his left arm is sent flying through the air. In all future scenes, it is the right arm that was destroyed.
*When Guyhawk suggests the Breastforce unite into Liokaiser, he has goggle eyes instead of individual eyes.
*The subtitled Shout Factory release of the series typically refers to Laster and Braver by their Japanese names. For some reason, this episode switches them to the names of their European Motorvater repaints, Flame and Lightspeed.

===Continuity errors===
* There is a short and positively ''bizarre'' scene dropped into the middle of this episode, in which Greatshot comes upon a bunch of dead robots in the middle of the desert. He removes a photo of a robot family (!) from the hand of one corpse, and then crumples it, angrily demanding to know what the Decepticons are planning. The ''implication'', one supposes, is that he's followed the ''Thunder Arrow'' this way, and that the Decepticons have killed these robots. Which would be all well and good, except that it's got ''nothing'' to do with the rest of the episode. The Decepticons aren't planning ''anything'' that requires randomly killing some robots… and much more importantly, who the hell ''are'' these dead robots, anyway?! There's never been ''any'' indication that there are any Autobots on Earth except Star Saber's team!
* The sand is shown to be level around the hole which Greatshot falls into, yet after the buried ''Thunder Arrow'' rises into the air, there's clearly a huge section right behind said hole which should have been sticking out of the sand!

===Transformers references===
* Greatshot returns after his previous appearances in "[[Planet Micro - The Mysterious Warrior]]" and "[[Rescue! Guyhawk]]".
* Guyhawk's troubled past with Greatshot was covered in "Rescue! Guyhawk".

===Real-world references===
* Killbison refers to the impending destruction of the Brainmasters as the "end of the [[Wikipedia:The Three Musketeers|Three Autobot Musketeers]]".

===Foreign localization===
'''English'''
:*''Title:'' "'''Ambush in the Desert'''" ([[Omni Productions]] dub)
::* The narrator specifically mentions that Greatshot is on his way to Earth from [[Micro]].
::* While Galaxy Shuttle is crashing, Braver announces "Come on Decepticons, we're not scared of you!" instead of mentioning the important information that the landing gear is busted.
::* While applying first aid to Blacker, Pīpō reports that his "control computer" is undamaged.

===Trivia===
* Yet another episode that does away with the standard ''Victory'' title cards, and presents the title as white text on a black screen.
