This is the page for the TFWiki.net Transformers Hall of Fame Auditions entries. The rules are as follows:

#You must pick your top five Transformers characters, from any era. They must actually be Transformers; sorry, but no humans, non-Transformer aliens, non-Transformer robots, or anything else of the sort are being considered for the Hall of Fame. Any votes for such entities will not be tabulated. It is the sole discretion of the contest organizers to decide what does and does not count.
#Take your top five list and put it in alphabetical order. Order of preference does not matter. Feel free to denote the character's franchise of origin, although these distinctions may or may not figure into the final results.
#You cannot vote for a specific version of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Dinobot, Ironhide, Ratchet, Soundwave, or Waspinator. They've already been inducted!

Trolls aside, this is presently the most linked page that doesn't exist. We really ought to brainstorm on what the image quality policy is going to be.

I think some good guidelines would be:
*Absolutely no photographs of television screens.
*Avoid website watermarks whenever possible.
*Television network watermarks are acceptable, but things like "NEXT ON CARTOON NETWORK!" certainly aren't.

::I had a thing I wrote when I was trying to get permission from Remy to use one of his pics. Not about image quality so much as image conduct- but the one proceeds naturally from the other in a sort of Confucian Ideal. Might be useful as a starting point. (This is conversational not formal.)
<div class="messagebox" style="padding:1em;">*rubs head, ruminating* Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki has a complicated, largely unwritten, code about the images it uses that's more often moralistic than legalistic. Hasbro stock photos are preferred, then images we take ourselves and release to the public domain, and failing that some external sources. There's more than 6000 images on the wiki. We try to avoid sources where toy images are a large portion of the site content (as in your case) because it's... not very fair. (This often means Seibertron's too-dark toy galleries, which are but a tiny puddle in their vast sea of content.)</div>
Just started this page. Many sections are obviously still empty. I'll work on it some more in the evening, but if you want to add to it or correct any mistakes I may have made, feel free.--RosicrucianTalk 15:41, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Will this page serve as a good set of guidelines?--RosicrucianTalk 19:15, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
::The 'leaked information' statement sits very, very strangely in this paragraph. I assume it refers to leaked pictures-- but then it should really say so. Is there a page articulating our 'no leaked info' policy? Because there's a lot of confusion about that among newbies and I think it could stand being written down. (I'm not entirely convinced that listings showing up in computers constitutes 'leaked' information, and I'd like see a more thorough explanation why.) -On Vacation in Kona204.210.96.25
:::Well, that's what I'm trying to do here. So much of our policy seems to be unwritten and it does confuse the hell out of new editors when it gets enforced. We'd been meaning to do an image policy page for quite some time but it never seemed to get past early brainstorming.

:::So I tried to put down as much of it as I could remember seeing in practice.--RosicrucianTalk 14:09, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
:::I would think store listings would be fine, so long as they're confirmed and from a believable source. We don't want to throw every single rumor the moment it's made onto our pages. --ItsWalky 14:32, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
::::Well then, here's where I learn something, and why I think it's good that we put some of this stuff down in text. Once again if what I've put down is wrong or somehow incomplete, feel free to correct me. I've purposefully avoided putting the official policy template on this page until I can hear from the other editors.--RosicrucianTalk 14:35, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
:::::I wasn't sure myself- I can totally see the argument against including store computer listings-- they're often canceled or have name changes. If computer listings are allowed they should probably be flagged as 'tentative' until there's a more definite source for the release details. -On Vacation in Kona204.210.96.25
::::::Oh I'll freely admit that I've been on a bit of a hair trigger lately with some of the repeated additions we've had to revert. Many of those are finally being sourced to official announcements so I can breathe a little bit easier.

::::::So are there any objections to the guidelines I've set down here? Anything that needs reworded or added in? I'm hoping we can agree on something here so we can finally say we've got an Image Guidelines page.--RosicrucianTalk 21:56, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
:::::::I'd add in the need to state what the hell is happening in the scene as part of the description for comic scans and cartoon screencaps. We get way too many images that are uploaded for one narrow, specific purpose, and not described beyond the limits of that purpose. A screencap described as "Bumblebee from Animated" is not enough -- we need to know what he's doing, where he's doing it, who he's doing it to, and what episode he's doing it in. -- Repowers 00:29, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Noobie questions
*Is there any way of finding a list of Wanted images? The Wanted section doesn't seem to have this facility. Arguably contributors may find it easier to contribute images (with these rules applied) rather than articles. In my newb experience, edits are much more likely to be undone than images deleted. Some may find the editorial sance daunting and stay away, but could be convinced to contribute in a way that would be much less censored. Well, I know I could.
*What about pictures of the BotCon exclusives? What is the legal situation of those? A lot don't have Official images online anymore, but there are certainly pics of them all over the web. Drmick 11:38, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
:As stated in the image policy, it is acceptable to have fan created images, as long as they're nice, clear, and you are absolutely sure you own the copyright or have permission from the original taker of the photograph. The source of the photograph will need to be identified, as well as making clear what permissions are granted. It's all laid out in the policy. See the toy images for Thunderwing for a good example. We had crappy ones for a long time, but Walky got the toy recently and he has a lighting kit so he took new ones.--RosicrucianTalk 12:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

*OK so if I've got this right, where, for example Downshift (G1), an article is missing a toy image and has the 'needs image' flag, I could photograph my toy and upload the image, provided the image meets the other criteria for quality, filesisze, etc. Anacrucis 09:32, 6 August 2010 (EDT)
:::Yeh, unfortunately the accessories may be a problem. Then again, it took less work to dig the guy up than it did my AWOL eyeglasses, so who knows what will turn up. They must be around somewhere as I'm sure I saved them. Sadly his outer plastic is somewhat yellowed, but that may be correctable with photo editing. == Filesize standards ==

I think we should edit our filesize section to include a general limit range. I think a soft limit of 150KB (the recommended max filesize for the Wiki software, gives you a warning if you go over it) is more than enough for the overwhelming majority of images used on the wiki. We will let people go over the limit if 150KB adversely impacts the image quality or makes it too dang small. Opinions? --FFN 10:21, 20 May 2009 (EDT)
Toy images from other fansites
I've seen some toy pics from seibertron.com on this wiki. Do we need permission to upload their pics(and thus those from other fansites)? Cos the only one I remember that specified permission or lack thereof was the super buggy picture on Ultra Magnus (G1)/toys.Item42 15:22, 12 February 2010 (EST)

Self-taken toy photos
Since I didn't get much feedback on the Allspark, I'd like to bring it up here as well:

We really, really need to decide upon a better image policy.

*Can we release photos we took of our own toys into the public domain? Or are they only fair use because the designs to these toys are copyrighted by Hasbro and/or Takara?

*Are photos taken from Cliffbee's site in fact scanned from the Generations book, or did he take them himself?

*Are photos taken from Seibertron.com "fair use"? They're most certainly not "owned by the company or corporation that produced it".

*Are photos from eBay auctions copyrighted by Hasbro and/or Takara?

I really think we need a specific license for self-taken photos that properly address the fact that a) it's a derivative work that depicts a design owned by Hasbro/Takara and b) the photographer has the rights to this particular photo (excluding the rights to the design as stated under a) and releases it to whatever. "Fair use" doesn't quite cover it and implies that someone else owns all the rights to the photo.

We also need to decide upon something more specific for "photos taken from other websites". All the photos I uploaded recently were either taken by me, or I specifically asked the photographer for permission to use them (or asked him to take the photos in the first place). I generally refrain from stealing other peoples photos (with the exception of rare justified cases).--Nevermore 11:44, 13 November 2010 (EST)

: Looking at the bullet points, I see three basic questions: 1. Do Hasbro and/or Takara hold any rights over photos taken of toys they manufactured by individuals not under contract or employed by them? 2. Can we claim any sort of proper use of images from another website/auction where they have not given their consent? and 3. Which of Cliffbee's images are scanned from Generations and which are photos he took?

: I think we should handle the first question using exactly the kind of template you described. "It's a derivative work, but the photographer has rights to that specific photo" seems to describe the situation pretty well. To that end, it might behoove the Wiki to consult a lawyer regarding this copyright situation so that we know for sure what rights the photo takers have.

:The second question depends on the source. For a defunct auction (not all auctions are on eBay) or website where we aren't able to contact the copyright holder, I think fair use would be acceptable, if not public domain. Certainly the rights that Hasbro or Takara would hold on such pictures would be the same as for the photos we took ourselves. For active websites, we should definitely require that permission be obtained. There's no way to claim fair use for that situation. We should probably strive to try to get permission from people auctioning items while the auction is going on (if it turns out to be necessary). In the case of eBay, the images posted aren't the original digital photographs but processed versions. That might mean that what we download from eBay is actually copyrighted to eBay. I also wonder if their TOS includes anything regarding the copyright of images used in auctions?

:As to the third question, someone who owns Generations should be able to figure that out pretty quickly.
--Tigerpaw28 13:59, 13 November 2010 (EST)
::There are eBay auctions that use self-hosted images, hence without an eBay watermark. eBay couldn't claim rights to those photos at all. Furthermore, the only cases where I personally would use images from eBay without permission is when the image illustrates something like "toy scalping", where the photographer is highly unlikely to grant us permission because the photo will be used in a context that makes him look bad. Basically, if "The only authentic photos to illustrate something will most certainly not be given permission to be be used by us by the photographer for obvious reasons", I'd make an exception. Does "fair use" apply here? It's actually unfair use, but not in the way "fair" is defined in "fair use".--Nevermore 14:21, 13 November 2010 (EST)
:::I think you and Tigerpaw28 have pretty much summed it up. We need a "user generated photo" template to cover photos we take of toys outlining the rights Hasbro/Tomy have to the original object and releasing any rights the photographer has to the composition. Photos from defunct websites and concluded auctions should probably be tagged as fair use and replaced at the earliest opportunity with our own photos. Photos from active sites would require the user generated tag and a note as to the originating site/individual (and their consent, of course). This is probably a side effect of the fact that this wiki is more fiction focused, as the tags for credit on fiction are much better developed. --Khajidha 15:19, 13 November 2010 (EST)
::::On a related note, I propose the creation of a meta-template for collage images such as this one. Anyone who has followed by image uploads, I love to do comparison images.
After passing through the unstable Space Bridge, Perceptor and the Autobots aboard the Ark found themselves in the vicinity of a Cybertronian colony world called Velocitron. They located it in part thanks to a mysterious starmap projected outwards from Optimus Prime's chest by the Matrix itself. As a scientist, Perceptor had difficulty with the concept of a mythical artifact guiding their movements, but Velocitron proved to be real enough. He was part of Optimus Prime's initial landing team, who made contact with the planet's rulers, Override and Ransack. It was a time of great stress between Velocitron's rulers, and the Autobots' arrival from mythical Cybertron only exacerbated the situation. The planet's sun was unstable, and the speed-oriented engineers of the world had little scientific background in astronomy. Perceptor assisted the Velocitronians with their studies of the star, and successfully reactivated the planet's Space Bridge, reopening the world to interstellar travel.

The next leg of their journey through the Space Bridge brought the Autobots to fabled Junkion, a world composed entirely of space junk. Sabotage brought down the Ark shortly after their arrival, and Optimus Prime tasked Perceptor with getting things up and running again. He also performed an exploratory check on Junkion's four Space Bridge nexii, and determined that one was indeed still in working order. (The one indicated by the Matrix, but of course Perceptor made his own observations first.) Perceptor's work proved valuable, and the Ark was able to regain flight even amidst the arrival of the Nemesis and the chaos created by the unearthed Requiem Blaster. After the battle over Junkion ended, Perceptor updated Optimus Prime on the status of the planet and the ships involved in the skirmish. Hasbro stock photos are preferred, then images we take ourselves and release to the public domain, and failing that some external sources. There's more than 6000 images on the wiki. We try to avoid sources where toy images are a large portion of the site content (as in your case) because it's... not very fair. ==Noobie questions==
Drmick 10:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
:Go to Articles in need of images.--RosicrucianTalk 10:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Filesize standards
I think we should edit our filesize section to include a general limit range. I think a soft limit of 150KB (the recommended max filesize for the Wiki software, gives you a warning if you go over it) is more than enough for the overwhelming majority of images used on the wiki. We will let people go over the limit if 150KB adversely impacts the image quality or makes it too dang small. Opinions? --FFN 10:21, 20 May 2009 (EDT)
::...I always thought the 150KB limit was the limit. == Toy images from other fansites ==

Rodimus/Hot Rod "blooper"?
Well, there's a conflict of opinion, so let's discuss.

Rodimus Prime never turned back into Hot Rod without removing the Matrix from his chest. The last time Rodimus Prime lost control of his transformation, he turned into the Winnebaggo as always. It looks to me more like Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime's character models got switched by mistake at some point. Gauthier is still using his Rodimus voice rather than his Hot Rod voice. He reverts back to his Rodimus model inexplicably as the Technobots fight the Terrorcons. Doesn't make any sense, it reeks of blooper, in my opinion. --Detour 11:29, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

:But he's *not* using his Rodimus voice - he's speaking with the different, higher-pitched "younger" voice he traditionally uses for Hot Rod when he says: "It's happening again! Perceptor!" Youtube link I don't disagree that it's completely nonsensical, or anything, but it really looks like it was intentional, like the anti-electrons affected his body and turned him back into Hot Rod for some reason. - Chris McFeely (not signed in)

::Fair enough. Really seemed like a blooper to me, though. Thanks for correcting me. --Detour 17:17, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

:::Was at work when I added that previous response, so when I was struck with the idea to check the original script, I couldn't, but I'm home now and I've had a look, and indeed, the line I quoted is, in fact, credited to "Hot Rod," rather than Rodimus. I guess the anti-electrons made him lose his connection to the Matrix, maybe? - Chris McFeely 19:06, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Sound Effect
I noticed while watching this episode recently that Perceptor's 'Electro-map' sounds like a tri-corder from Star Trek: The Original Series. Femmes Rule! 17:07, 12 December 2011 (EST)

Kudos to whoever came up with these. The second and third captions are ESPECIALLY groanworthy. :) Femmes Rule! 15:15, 12 December 2011 (EST)
