Transformers: War for Cybertron is series of video games published by Activision and developed by High Moon Studios, Next Level Games and Vicarious Visions, set before the Transformers take their war to Earth. Hasbro intends it to act as a foundation for Transformers franchise storylines for years to come, and so they've been giving a lot of input and stressing character development. The book Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron adapts the game for the Transformers: Prime continuity.
Transformer references
* Steve Blum does his best Victor Caroli impression for his role of the narrator.
* A variety of callbacks to The Transformers: The Movie:
** Ironhide greets the space slug with the universal greeting, to Warpath's confusion.
** In the Kaon prison, an Autobot is pronounced guilty and pushed off a gantry into a pit. He responds with "Spare me this mockery of justice!", quoting Kranix during his trial on Quintessa.
** Rumble repeats another line from the movie: "First we crack the shell, then we crack the nuts inside!"
** When Starscream declares himself as Decepticon leader, Megatron retorts that "[he] still function[s]."
* The Punch of Kill Everything is a multiplayer Leader Class ability and a Soldier class upgrade.
* When Skywarp calls Thundercracker ugly he replies that they look the same. Hmmm.
* Stan Bush's 2007 theme song, "Till All Are One (Transformers Theme)" is used in the credits, and the special thanks describe the families that were involved "rock like Stan Bush".
* Air Raid pokes fun at Silverbolt's fear of heights.
* The in-game menu for stat tracking and leaderboards is called Teletraan 1.
* When Ironhide asks Optimus how he knows Megatron, Optimus replies that it is a story for another time.
*Pretty much all the Achievement/Trophy names are references to other parts of Transformers history, mostly G1.
** The ones for completing the campaign chapters include Dark Awakening, Starscream's Brigade, A Prime Problem, The Last Prime, You Got The Touch, The War Within, and Till All Are One.
** Gameplay names include Thief in the Night, Fire in the Sky, Chaos Bringer, Motormaster!, Devastator!, Brute-a-kiss!, Slugfest, Powerglide Performer, First we crack the shell..., Blast-a-rachnia and Ramhorn.
* Autobots and Decepticons alike are heard to swear by 'Primus', confirming his 'existence'.
* Trypticon has a 'conversion cog' that controls his transformation, and is probably a less 'branded' term for G1's transformation cog.
* The energon cubes bear strong resemblance to the Allspark cube.
* The game's Rocket Turret, when ripped from its mounting, is named the "Nucleon Shock Cannon" on the HUD.

Toy tie-ins
Hasbro has confirmed that several toys will be made to tie into the promotion of the video game. These include figures of Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Megatron and Soundwave. At Toy Fair 2010, they were confirmed to be part of the Generations toyline. At 2010 they said they would like to make more, and that Starscream (and likely other Seekers) are at the top of the list if they decide to produce more figures from the game.
Comic adaptation
IDW Publishing published a War for Cybertron comic based on the game. News of this first got leaked when Australian website JB Hi-Fi offered a free copy of issue 1 if you pre-ordered the game from them. Later, it was available for those that purchased either the PS3 or Xbox versions of the game at Sears or Kmart in America. The story is a partial adaptation of the Exodus book.
Operation Transmission Recovery
As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips/images" to you and me).

There are two dials, blue (outer) and yellow (inner). Using your mouse, you can drag the dial to set coordinates. The blue dial is set by aligning it to marks on the outer circle. When aligned, it becomes a blue ring. After that, the yellow dial is set so that signal strength is full, as indicated by a meter on the right. Once a transmission is unlocked its symbol lights up and the "Total Recovered" amount increases a little bit. When you reach 100%, it tells you how many hours remain until next batch.

As of January 12, 2010, the following transmissions (Batch 9), almost all of which are part of the second trailer (link below), were available:
:Voice actor: Nolan North

During the final days of the war, Brawl served aboard a Decepticon starship under Megatron, who was seeking the Dark Energon guarded by the neutral Sky Commander Starscream. He was part of the bridge crew, along with Barricade as Megatron laid siege to the orbiting station where Starscream hid the supply of Dark Energon. After Megatron gained entry to the station (by ramming his starship into it, no less), Brawl and Barricade then helped Megatron fight his way into the station, past Starscream's soldiers. Starscream's constant taunting irritated Brawl, to the point he requested permission to rip off Starscream's head. He even said please. The Decepticons eventually reached the supply of Dark Energon and prevented Starscream from destroying it, and as his reward, Brawl was infused with the corrupted Energon's power by Megatron.

Later, during the Decepticon assault on the Autobot capital of Iacon, Brawl had the honour of commanding and spearheading the ground attack while Starscream (his head sadly still attached) commanded the aerial forces and Megatron personally led a small strikeforce into the heart of the city. Megatron's team eventually reunited with Brawl and his forces outside the Iacon Vaults, where Autobot leader Sentinel Zeta Prime had taken refuge. Despite being heavily out-numbered (and being dogpiled by numerous Autobots), Brawl held out until Megatron, Breakdown and Soundwave arrived to assist. Brawl complained about Starscream's refusal to give his ground troops air support, but Megatron wasn't interested in excuses.

When even Megatron's Dark Energon powers failed to open the massive doors to the Vaults, the enraged Decepticon ordered a bombing run. Brawl attempted to protest, since the Autobots' anti-aircraft defenses were still active, but Megatron would not be convinced. After the bombing attempt failed miserably, Brawl tactfully suggested they first take the anti-aircraft guns in order to guarantee success. Megatron noted this was 'an excellent suggestion' and commanded him to see to it.

The Decepticons successfully disabled the anti-aircraft guns and Brawl once again called down a bombing run, only to be bluntly refused by Starscream. Taking issue with Starscream referring to the bombers as 'his ships', Megatron cut in and ensured the bombing run would take place. However, Brawl and his comrades now had to hold off a massive Autobot counterattack until the bombers arrived. Despite fighting and killing numerous Autobots (including several Heavy Soldiers and Aerialbots), it seemed as though the Decepticons would be overwhelmed. Brawl successfully completed the bombing run count down and watched as the Autobots were obliterated. Megatron ordered Brawl to hold his position while he led his team to 'discuss' matters with Zeta Prime.

Brawl followed his orders to hold his ground to the letter. In fact, while Megatron, Breakdown and Soundwave were being attacked by a huge Autobot, Brawl watched, no doubt confident that his master would be victorious.

He probably wasn't too happy when Starscream claimed leadership when Megatron was apparently killed by a huge heavily-armed ship.

Brawl then journeyed with Megatron and the rest of the Decepticons to Cybertron's core, watching as Megatron corrupted the core and cowered from falling debris.Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
Notes
*Despite his Generation 1 counterpart being nothing more than a battle-hungry bundle of rage and his live-action movie counterpart being a heavily-armed, battle-hungry bundle of rage (both being shock-troops you unleashed on the enemy), this Brawl is intelligent enough to act as overall ground commander. He even makes a calm, well-thought out suggestion during the Iacon battle, advising Megatron to disable the anti-aircraft guns.

*While his tank mode, colouring and lust for battle are Brawl, his intelligence, strategic outlook and command ability are more in line with the Combaticon commander Onslaught. The twin barrels on his back also harken back to his old boss, as the original Brawl only had one barrel.

*As he is not mentioned in Exodus it is unknown if he combines with Onslaught to form Bruticus Maximus.

Soundwave was one of Megatron's earliest followers and, many believe, instrumental to his rise. He is a master spy, using surveillance equipment and a veritable army of Minicon minions (some of which nest inside his own body) to learn everything there is to know about his allies and his enemies. He makes it his business to know exactly what is happening, where, and when and his Minicons inevitably help to turn this information to the advantage of Megatron... and Soundwave himself.

Fiction
Exodus: The History of the War for Cybertron
Soundwave was a gladiator from Kaon who almost bested Megatron in combat, an act that created mutual respect between the two. Soundwave saw in Megatron a desire to return to the swashbuckling spirit of the Golden Age of Cybertron, when Cybertronians emerged from the Well of All Sparks having to escape from the Underworld's monsters rather than being put into a caste. He was appointed Megatron's lieutenant with Shockwave. Though Megatron despised Minicons, Soundwave insisted on having them around to spy on their gladiators, including the time when Megatron's librarian friend Orion Pax came to visit. He was suspicious of Orion and even asked permission from Megatron to tail him as he returned to Iacon.

After Decepticons bombed Cybertron in Megatron's name, Soundwave sent Frenzy and Rumble to search for the Matrix of Leadership in Crystal City (a place which design he always found self indulgent). Soundwave was not sure whether he should have bothered, as he was not superstitious and wondered what use a piece of a broken sword could be. Instead he got chilling indications Crystal City's scientists were planning to revive Omega Supreme.

Soundwave attended Orion and Megatron's hearing before the High Council. During this meeting, Soundwave helped to sow discord and tension by loudly shouting his complaints over security breaches that, in truth, he himself had caused. The Council noted that they were aware someone had tried to find the Matrix, and they appointed Orion Prime and requested he find it. This tore Orion and Megatron's movement in two.

During the final days of the war, Soundwave and his minions' research changed the fate of Cybertron. It was they who found the areas of the DataNet that Alpha Trion had overlooked and not deleted, revealing the existence of Dark Energon on Trypticon Station. It was he who remembered the Geosynchronous Energon Bridge below Crystal City that allowed for the mass transportation of Dark Energon between Cybertron and Trypticon. And it was the evidence he got from Rumble and Frenzy when they infiltrated Crystal City that revealed the existence of the Plasma Energy Chamber and its two Code Keys, which enabled Megatron to poison the Core of Cybertron.

When Optimus removed the Chamber from the Core, beginning the planet's slow healing process, Soundwave boarded the Nemesis with Megatron, Starscream and Lugnut to pursue the Autobot Ark into the unknown reaches of space. Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron
:Voice actor: Isaac C. Singleton Jr. (English), Claudio Moneta (Italian)

Soundwave took control of the orbital station Starscream was posted at, helping Megatron to reach the Dark Energon by establishing a forward base within the station. He then directed Megatron to a Data Matrix Center in order to find a route to the Dark Energon that had not been blocked by Starscream.

Later, Soundwave notified Megatron that access to the core was impossible, as it was guarded by the Omega Gate. He and Breakdown accompanied Megatron as they led the assault on Iacon, through which they would find and take the Omega Key, opening the Omega Gate and allowing the core to be infused with Dark Energon. On their way to the Stellar Galleries, Soundwave reported snipers, and after taking them down, Megatron infused the entrance with Dark Energon and took his team into the security station. Soundwave noticed that the batteries fed the security grid, and the trio infused each of them with the Dark Energon source, deactivating the security measures. Soundwave then detected the Omega Key behind their next door, and after opening it, the Decepticons arrived at the Stellar Galleries. They opened the container, but found not a key, but a message from Zeta Prime, who announced that he had the Omega Key. Zeta sent Autobot attack forces that were swiftly taken down. Megatron ordered Soundwave to trace Zeta Prime's broadcast, and Soundwave found it came from 12.7 cycles ahead. He then noted a weak wall, and the Decepticons busted it down and lurked into the cities' subsystems, providing a direct route to Zeta, and the Omega Key.

The group descended down a shaft and went through a tunnel, avoiding trains on the way, and after breaking down a door in a ventilation area, they were ambushed by Autobot cloakers. Soundwave dispatched them and infused Dark Energon into the batteries. Megatron congratulated him, and then ordered him to unlock the exit. Soundwave obliged, and the trio found themselves in another tunnel. Breakdown challenged Soundwave to a race, to which the monotone Decepticon responded with a cold "Negative." Tough crowd. Rushing through the tunnel, this time full of moving trains, the group came to a station where they infiltrated Iacon's lower levels. Soundwave detected the Omega Key at last, and suggested proceeding through the logistics station. Roughing it through the Autobot attackers, finally Soundwave determined that the key was beyond the train tunnels.

Soundwave and his teammates arrived at Iacon's main streets, where they met up with Brawl outside of Zeta Prime's vaults. Helping him clear the area, Brawl called in the Dark Energon bombers, but they were spectacularly shot down in flames. Brawl suggested disabling the anti-aircraft guns, and Soundwave assisted in carrying out the plan. Autobots intercepted all around, but Soundwave and the others had to hold them off until the next wave of bombers arrived. When they did, the street and the vault doors were cleared, and Soundwave joined the others on their way to the entrance, the squad was intercepted by a Destroyer, and Soundwave split from the others to flank him, and eventually rendered him non-functional. Inside the vault, they avoided Zeta's traps and finally reached the Omega Key, but it too was a trap. Zeta then attacked them, using a giant hologram and controlling the chamber to his advantage, mashing and sending holographic brutes to attack for him. After a huge battle ensued, Zeta's machine was destroyed thanks to Soundwave noticing the core's weakness, and Megatron took the key from Zeta's chest. But, Zeta Prime informed them that the "key" he had was actually a device that activated the real key: Omega Supreme.

As the three Decepticons flew away to track Omega, Soundwave noticed that the "key" was coming for them. Omega Supreme attacked and thrust the Decepticons' ship into a wall. Crash-landing, Megatron had a change of plans; force Omega Supreme to open the Omega Gate. Soundwave noticed a Decepticon drop ship across the bridge, but when the squad went to investigate, Omega Supreme intercepted them. Soundwave reported that his weapons were ineffective, but Megatron told his soldiers to destroy the bridge supports, causing Omega Supreme to plunge. But he survived and in vehicle mode, forced the Decepticons to retreat inside. In a frenzy, Breakdown noted that the door was locked, and Soundwave proposed that Dark Energon could open the door, which it did. Inside, Soundwave picked up a transmission from Starscream, who announced that he would be replacing the "deceased" Megatron as Decepticon leader. Enraged, Megatron threatened Starscream, but Soundwave informed his leader that communication to the surface had been cut off, and that he was cursing him out for no reason.

The trio arrived at the lift, but found it to be locked down. Breaking the locks got the lift back to working condition, but on their way up, Omega Supreme returned and blasted it, forcing the Decepticons down the shaft at breakneck speed. Omega was still out there, so the locks' destruction was the Decepticons' only hope. At the bottom, they continued, but Omega Supreme wouldn't quit! He grabbed the Decepticons, but Soundwave helped out in shooting Omega Supreme's hand, relinquishing the three from his grasp. They retreated inside a fortified Autobot position, and in order to prevent detection, Soundwave jammed their signals. Slaying the Autobots inside who dared attempt to attack their foes, Soundwave unlocked the exit, which only let in more Autobots. They too, met their demise, but as Soundwave and his comrades escaped, he noticed that the Autobots' security was countering the effects of Dark Energon. Destroying the sentries turned to be a worthwhile solution, but the Decepticons had to deal with Omega Supreme and his mines. Soundwave's sensors indicated the presence of a bridge nearby, and though Breakdown was unsure, Megatron was willing to follow Soundwave's help. Once again, Omega Supreme continued to stalk, but Soundwave led his group to an alternate route... a dead end, to be precise. But Soundwave revealed that breaking a doorway nearby took them to Iacon maintenance tunnels leading straight to the bridge terminal. When they arrived through the power conduits, Soundwave fought through more Autobots and finally activated the bridge.

Racing across the bridge, they barely avoided Omega Supreme's pursuit, and Soundwave located another cargo lift that would transport them straight to the heavy ion turrets, and on the lift he found several Autobot/Decepticon signals, a sign they were approaching the battle on the surface. Soundwave participated in the slugfest, and his analysis proved that the turrets nearby had enough firepower to legitimately damage Omega Supreme. Then, he showed no mercy using the turrets to breach Omega's armour and finally topple him to the ground below.

Soundwave, Breakdown, and Megatron followed Omega, and at the bottom, they were surprised to see him survive and transform into his mighty robot mode. Soundwave noted that the batteries were the source of Omega's health, and gave his amigos hints on Omega's weaknesses; avoiding his tractor beams would allow them to live, and his turrets were vulnerable, making them the prime target. When the turrets were blown, Soundwave saw that the batteries were being used to repair them, and so it became an objective to corrupt them with Dark Energon. When Omega Supreme used the batteries to heal himself, he was instead weakened, allowing the Decepticons to critically injure him. Omega Supreme was still alive, however, but much weaker. Soundwave observed a weak chest and Megatron ordered Soundwave and Breakdown to blast it, and Omega Supreme fell at last. Soundwave told Megatron that now would be a good time to corrupt Omega with Dark Energon, but Megatron shut him up for stating the obvious and did it himself, laughing all the way.

After Cybertron had been infected, Soundwave was posted as head of Kaon's prison, and watched over Zeta's body. Optimus, Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Air Raid led an Autobot breakout and battled Soundwave's minions Frenzy, Rumble and Laserbeak. Soundwave himself sustained heavy damage leaving his post to revive and retrieve each Minicon. Eventually, defeated and critically damaged, Soundwave desperately attempted to restore himself by absorbing life force from Zeta's very own spark. His attempt to fully heal was halted by Optimus, who even took a shot from the Decepticon intended to finish off Prime. Although Soundwave and his minions fled, the damage had already been done and Zeta Prime expired moments later. Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
First Encounter!
The Autobots, Decepticons, and the Mini-Cons are introduced and all arrive to Earth.

Synopsis
On Cybertron, Optimus Prime, Hot Shot, and Red Alert are embroiled in battle with Starscream, Cyclonus, and Megatron. Despite being powered by Swindle, Starscream still finds himself shot at by Optimus using his trailer. Annoyed, Megatron removes Starscream's Mini-Con, noting how he frequently wastes the "awesome power of Mini-Con augmentation". Starscream wants another crack at the Autobots, but Megatron reveals that the enemy has disappeared.

Hot Shot doesn't particularly like retreating. Optimus points out that they were no match for the Decepticons without Mini-Cons, explaining that if the Mini-Cons hadn't left Cybertron, the Autobot would've lost the war a long time ago. Red Alert wonders what happened to the Mini-Con vessel, while Optimus hopes to never find out.

On Earth, Rad and Carlos are exploring the remains of an alien civilization inside a cavern. While they are in the cave, Billy and Fred cause a cave-in; in the ensuing confusion, Rad and Carlos inadvertently activate a computer, allowing it to send a signal to Cybertron. Alexis arrives at the blocked entrance just in time to see Rad, Carlos, and a mysterious robot in the entrance after the blockage exploded. The robot tries to speak to the surprised teenagers, but is unable to translate to English fast enough before Megatron arrives. Megatron provides the translation: "We come in peace." However, he adds that he does not.

Megatron notes the primitive planet's amount of raw resources, promising to strip it down. To make a quick getaway, the mysterious robot transforms into a copy of Alexis's bike, speeding away from Megatron. An irritated Megatron figures that signal may have also reached the Autobots, when Optimus Prime stops him in mid-sentence. Megatron finds it easy to bat Optimus around, pointing out that he still possesses Leader-1. In the meantime, the teenagers are introduced to other Mini-Cons who woke up thanks to the signal: Sureshock, Grindor, Sparkplug, Longarm, Jolt, and High Wire, the robot who they already met. Sureshock explains the history of the Mini-Cons: they were natives of Cybertron, living in peace along with the Transformers. That is, until the Decepticons rounded them up and retooled them to serve as sources of destructive power. They escaped, but their ship was damaged enroute, crash landing onto the Moon and scattering the Mini-Cons all over Earth. By their accounts, they were deactivated for four million years.

They decide to be lazy and not help out Optimus, who's getting his ass beaten by Megatron.

*This issue contains no credits for the colouring job.
*A panel showing the Decepticons "re-tooling" a poor Mini-Con is based on a scene from the first issue of Dreamwave's Armada comic. While Dreamwave's scene featured Dirt Boss, Panini has him coloured like a generic.
