When Sideswipe joined the Autobots he trained under the veteran warrior [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]], learning the arts of war. After his training was complete, he went on to become the protector of a settlement of displaced Autobots. This settlement was found by the pitiless [[Demolishor (ROTF)|Demolishor]], who slaughtered them nearly to a bot. Sideswipe was ashamed, not only over having failed to protect his charges, but also because he had lived to tell the tale. {{storylink|Tales of the Fallen issue 2|Tales of the Fallen #2}}

After [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]]'s Autobots left [[Mission City]], they left a homing beacon in a junk yard near the metropolis to attract any Autobots who might have heard Prime's rallying call to [[Earth]]. {{Storylink|Alliance issue 3|Alliance #3}} Sideswipe was among those few that answered the beacon and had hidden themselves in the junk yard. Once discovered, they were brought to [[Diego Garcia]] to train with the other Autobots and [[William Lennox|Major Lennox]]'s soldiers in defense of their new home. {{Storylink|Alliance issue 4|Alliance #4}} However, Sideswipe proved a loose cannon as he continued his vendetta against Demolishor when the Decepticon turned up in [[Montevideo]], [[Uruguay]]. Showing little regard for humans in pursuing his quarry, Sideswipe's actions prompted Ironhide to arrive on the scene to rein him in. The younger Autobot was openly insubordinate towards Ironhide, warning him not to get in the way. Ultimately all the old veteran could do was to serve as damage control during Sideswipe's singleminded pursuit. Ultimately more reinforcements from [[NEST]] arrived, and Demolishor fled the scene. In the aftermath, Sideswipe saw the fear and mistrust the humans regarded him with because of his violent actions. Unlike most Autobots, Sideswipe—part of a younger generation built during wartime—was made to fight. He was born during the war and with full knowledge of the Cybertronian battlefield, designed solely for killing. Sideswipe served as a combat instructor at NEST's Scottish base, and had to put [[Skids (ROTF)|Skids]] and [[Mudflap (ROTF)|Mudflap]] back through basic training—something he was fed up of. As far as he was concerned, they should've been put on charge for causing [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor]] to escape and he should have better things to do. He dealt with this by putting the twins through simulated combat after simulated combat, finally cracking it up to maximum setting, before [[Ravage (ROTF)|someone knocked him out]].

When he came to, the twins were babbling about how a mysterious and long-vanished Decepticon working for [[Soundwave (ROTF)|another mysterious Decepticon]] had done it and tried to kill them! Sideswipe was having none of it, viewing this as implausible and believing the twins knocked him out in revenge for training and were covering themselves. Following the training, poor Sideswipe took them to [[Diego Garcia]] and continued to be pestered by them for a meeting with Prime. Not trusting them and ignoring their babble about some "[[the Fallen|dude]]", he tried to discourage them, only for the two to sneak off behind his back. Sighing, he went in pursuit... and saw them distract Prime before a [[Scorponok (Movie)|Decepticon attacked]], Skids tripped over Prime before he could take charge, and Mudflap handed a weapon to [[Sideways (ROTF)|an escaping prisoner]]! Sideswipe would be part of the team tracking down the twins {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 2.5|Outlaw Blues}}, and would later be surprised when they were tracked down to [[North Carolina]]... and were ''fighting'' two Decepticons? After the Autobots tracked the twins to the Decepticon's base, it became clear they ''weren't'' traitors after all and ''had'' been framed. Did Sideswipe apologise? Sideswipe was one of the Autobots sent to [[Shanghai]] when Decepticon energy signatures were detected, but he was initially held in reserve. As [[Sideways (ROTF)|Sideways]] managed to flee from [[Arcee (Movie)|Arcee]] and [[Skids (ROTF)|the]] [[Mudflap (ROTF)|Twins]] in vehicle mode, [[William Lennox|Major Lennox]] ordered Sideswipe deployed. Sideswipe immediately sped in and quickly changed to robot mode. Catching up with Sideways by dexterously skating on his wheel-feet, Sideswipe somersaulted over the Decepticon, threw his right blade in the Decepticon's hood, and then dragged the blade in the opposite direction, tearing Sideways apart. Sideswipe took a moment to reflect on the success of his kill.

Afterwards, he returned with the other Autobots to [[NEST]]'s base in Diego Garcia, where he witnessed Director [[Theodore Galloway]] air the [[Barack Obama|President's]] concerns over the recent spate of Decepticon activity, and how the Autobots remaining on Earth might be the cause of it.

After the [[AllSpark|AllSpark shard]] was stolen by [[Ravage (ROTF)|Ravage]] from NEST's secured bunker and Decepticons were detected heading towards [[Sam Witwicky]] at [[Princeton University]], Sideswipe and the other Autobots were deployed to intercept, but arrived too late: [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]] had died protecting the human boy from the resurrected [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]], [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] and [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor]].

The Autobots and NEST arrived at a [[United States of America|United States]] air base to discover that they were no longer welcome, following renewed Decepticon aggression after Prime's death, and that they were ordered to return to Diego Garcia. The emotionally overwhelmed Autobots nearly came to blows with their former allies but finally agreed to stand down and remain on Earth. When Major Lennox learned Witwicky had come up with a way to possibly resurrect Optimus Prime, NEST travelled to [[Egypt]] instead. Sideswipe, who had been covered in a cargo net while being transported in vehicle mode, relished the chance to cut through his bonds when deployed from the air. Before the war, Sideswipe was a major competitor in the [[gladiatorial combat|gladiatorial games]]. Years of training made him a master at fencing, something he viewed as an art to be celebrated through battle. Tracking Megatron to a disused factory with Optimus, Sideswipe complained about the dust until Optimus told him to be quiet. Optimus's scans turned up nothing, but Megatron soon revealed himself, batting Sideswipe aside. The young Autobot quickly recovered and joined Megatron in sword combat, even stabbing the Decepticon leader in the foot mid-sentence. Megatron subsequently brought the roof down on the two Autobots and escaped, though neither Autobot was harmed. {{storylink|Cyber Missions 4}}

Later, Sideswipe was pursuing [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]] and [[Frenzy (Movie)|Frenzy]] in [[Scramble City (city)|Scramble City]], and took a turn to let the Decepticons think they had lost him, in truth following them to the facility they were heading for. After crumpling Frenzy into a ball and batting him back at Barricade, Sideswipe engaged the larger Decepticon, but was stopped with fire suppression equipment that froze him to the databanks. As the Decepticons were able to escape, Sideswipe broke free and learned that they had stolen NEST's defense deactivation codes. {{storylink|Cyber Missions 6}}

Soon after, he was able to discover a wounded Ratchet back in [[Mission City]] and took him back to [[Diego Garcia]] to be repaired. While Ratchet was getting fixed up, Sideswipe traded in his shattered blades for new blasters. While they did that, [[Lockdown (ROTF)|Lockdown]] arrived and threatened Sideswipe during target practice. Apparently, he had enough- he was able to shoot the [[Electromagnetic pulse|EMP blaster]] off of Lockdown's wrist and back to Ratchet, who was fully operational. Lockdown, now without a blaster weapon, pushed Sideswipe aside and fled, much to Sideswipe's dismay, but Ratchet assured him that he was headed straight for the medical bay. There, he saw an out-cold Lockdown laying on an operating table, all the while stating he couldn't look. {{storylink|Cyber Missions 7}}

Sideswipe and Ratchet were transporting some energon to a secure location when they were attacked by [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] and [[Mindwipe (ROTF)|Mindwipe]]. Mindwipe assaulted them with his hypnotic powers, but at Ratchet's suggestion, Sideswipe used his satellite radio to play some loud music, breaking Mindwipe's concentration. The Autobot turned on Starscream, yelling at Ratchet to secure the energon, but as Ratchet pointed out, Starscream was a bit more formidable than Sideswipe had counted on. As Starscream was on the verge of dismantling Sideswipe, Ratchet threw the energon trailer from the nearest cliff, and Starscream broke off his attack. In the aftermath, Ratchet and Sideswipe went to find somewhere safe to hide from the enraged Decepticon. {{storylink|Cyber Missions 10}}

Optimus later requested backup to help fight Megatron and Starscream in the Arctic Circle. Sideswipe, Ratchet, Ironhide,and Bumblebee arrived to help their leader, and all four fought Starscream. The Decepticon was swiftly defeated by the Autobots, but Optimus allowed Megatron and Starscream to flee.

Optimus later laid a trap for a final confrontation against Megatron, and had a hologram of the imprisoned Soundwave as bait. Megatron tried to retrieve his soldier, but the image shifted to a hologram of Sideswipe. Sideswipe calmly taunted the Decepticon leader as he swiped at the illusion, but Sideswipe did not take part in the ensuing battle.

When [[Alice]] stole an RV and went on a rampage, Sideswipe was part of the NEST team sent to stop her. She attempted to ram the NEST roadblock, but Sideswipe decided to ram her first, and impaled her through the front windscreen. He was later seen carrying the RV over his head. He observed [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] examining Alice's corpse, and wondered why any Cybertronian would stoop to taking on the appearance of a [[human|lesser life form]]. {{storylink|Nefarious issue 1|Nefarious #1}} He was sent with Ironhide to stop a Decepticon trio. Ironhide warned him not to get cocky, but Sideswipe merely responded that he really ''was'' that good, before chopping [[Brakedown (ROTF)|Brakedown]] in half. He was ready to finish off the apparently-surrendering [[Dirt Boss (ROTF)|Dirt Boss]] as well, but the surrender was just a ruse to allow [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]] time to attack, and Sideswipe was caught in the explosion. Sideswipe helped prepare a nuclear shelter in [[Odessa]], [[Texas]] to house Soundwave. {{storylink|Nefarious issue 3|Nefarious #3}} When Soundwave led them to the location of the [[Initiative base]] and it wasn't there, Sideswipe wondered why Optimus continued to trust the Decepticon. Soundwave traced the [[Initiative]] to [[Oregon]], and the Autobots went there to launch an attack. Ratchet suggested Sideswipe stay behind him to avoid damage, but Sideswipe scoffed at the very idea. However the Autobots found themselves facing brainwashed Transformers, and Sideswipe even recognized one as [[Armorhide (Movie)|Armorhide]]. {{storylink|Nefarious issue 5|Nefarious #5}} Optimus sent Sideswipe, [[Skids (ROTF)|Skids]] and [[Mudflap (ROTF)|Mudflap]] to help [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]]'s team. With little Decepticon activity on Earth since the defeat of The Fallen, the Autobots now assisted their allies in dealing with human problems around the globe. Sideswipe accompanied [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]], [[Mirage (Movie)|Dino]], and [[Wheeljack (Movie)|Que]] in a mission to an illegal nuclear power plant in the Middle East. Upon returning to base, he was called in for a weapons inspection. Later, after the former Autobot leader [[Sentinel Prime (ROTF)|Sentinel Prime]] was retrieved from Earth's [[Moon (moon)|moon]] and reactivated, Sideswipe observed his explanation of how his pillars were key to controlling the Space Bridge, a teleportation device Sentinel had designed that was crucial to the Autobot war effort.

After Sam Witwicky determined that the Decepticons were targeting Sentinel for his ability to control the Space Bridge, Sideswipe helped fend off the Dreads coming to capture the ancient Autobot on a highway in [[Washington, D.C.]]. Nearing the NEST facility, Sideswipe and Ironhide subsequently confronted the Dreads in robot mode in the city forcing the Decepticons to drop their weapons after a "Mexican standoff". However, the Dreads attacked the Autobots with hidden spears, injuring Ironhide in the process. Sideswipe managed to avoid damage and tossed Ironhide his discarded blaster, which the veteran Autobot used to destroy their enemies.

Sideswipe and the other Autobots were forced to leave Earth when the turncoat Sentinel Prime coerced the human governments to exile their protectors. Knowing that Sentinel and the Decepticons wouldn't honor their assurance that humanity would not be harmed, the Autobots hid themselves into the boosters of their ship, the ''[[Xantium (DOTM)|Xantium]]'', and safely splashed down to Earth after [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] destroyed the ship. The Autobots, now rejoined with their human allies from NEST and Sam Witwicky, fought their way into Decepticon-controlled Chicago, now the center stage for Sentinel Prime and Megatron's plan to bring [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to Earth. Soon, several Autobots were captured by Decepticons commanded by [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]] and [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]], and as Sideswipe struggled against his captors, the human traitor [[Dylan Gould]] convinced Soundwave to execute the Autobots, starting with Que. Sideswipe and the others would have suffered the same fate as the Autobot scientist if not for the timely intervention of [[Wheelie (ROTF)|Wheelie]] and [[Brains]], whose commandeered Decepticon mothership rained down [[Orbital Assault Carrier|fighters]] on Soundwave's forces, allowing the Autobots to turn the tables and destroy their captors.

Freed, Sideswipe and his comrades took to the fight to the Decepticons, and even helped Optimus Prime against the traitorous Sentinel Prime. Eventually, the control pillar activating the space bridge was destroyed, and in the ensuing chaos, the Decepticon forces in the sky were dragged into the abyss created by Cybertron's destruction. '''Barricade''' is apparently a complicated robot. He's considered "fractious" even by Decepticon standards, yet is willing to give [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] the benefit of the doubt and follow where he leads, at least for the time being. Though not totally dedicated to the service of the Decepticons' current leader, he is much more cautious and reserved about expressing mutinous dissent than say [[Blackout (Movie)|''most'']]. He believes that Starscream is vital in their search for [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]] and the [[AllSpark]]. In many ways this makes him Starscream's closest ally in the naturally combative Decepticon ranks. Then again, it's been said that he likes to trick people into trusting him, just so he can see their reactions when they find out just how much of a bad idea it was. As such, he has disguised himself as an Earth police car in an attempt to fool the humans around him.

If his attitude toward his fellow Decepticons is inconsistent, his attitude toward the [[Autobot|Autobots]] is not: kill them all. Barricade might not be as large as most of his peers, but he is every bit as deadly. He thoroughly relishes every chance in fighting the Autobots. He's smart enough to let one live if he thinks he or the Decepticons can use it to their advantage, but most of the time, they're dead before someone's even thought of a plan.

Many years in the past, when [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] had just come under the rule of the [[Defense Force]] and the [[Science Division]], Barricade was a member of the Defense Force under the command of High Protector [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. He participated in missions to rid the planet of "malcontents" who protested against the new order, and like many of his peers, he did so ruthlessly. {{Storylink|Foundation issue 2|Foundation #2}} After the discovery of a [[The Fallen|mysterious relic]], unknown alien hostiles attacked Cybertron. Megatron ordered Barricade and Scorponok to perform recon. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 1|Defiance #1}} Following the battle, Megatron changed significantly, altering the military's mission from one of protection of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to making war upon the hostile aliens and anybody who would stand in their way. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 2|Defiance #2}}

Barricade was sent on a mission to capture Science Division leader (and thorn in Megatron's side) [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus]] and eliminate his fellow scientists and the unwitting security team sent to arrest him. He and [[Crankcase (Movie)|Crankcase]] observed [[Brawl (Movie)|Brawl]] nailing the "traitors" with an explosive round, and he was eager to get into the fight. He was ordered back by the glory-hound [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]], but Barricade had the last laugh when the wily Optimus managed to bury the aerial forces under a mountain of rubble. During the subsequent civil war, Barricade was one of the Decepticons under the command of Starscream at a battle outside of [[Tyger Pax]]. As they were mopping up the last remnants of Autobot resistance, Barricade amused himself by playing with the decapitated head of a fallen Autobot. When he saw the AllSpark jettisoned into space, Barricade realized that Cybertron would soon die. Bonecrusher said to let it die, and he could join it. Ordered by Megatron to follow Optimus Prime's ship, Starscream hastily assembled a crew to go after them. Barricade not-exactly-quietly questioned the need to hurry, as he thought Megatron would have captured the AllSpark by now and would have take care of the Autobots in time. He also questioned Starscream's truthfulness. Unfortunately, he was overheard by Starscream and was chastised for his big mouth. While pursuing the ''Ark'', they were led into a trap and had to limp back to Cybertron for repairs. Once their ship was repaired, they continued on with their mission, landing on the [[Mars (planet)|fourth planet]] of the solar system where they detected the AllSpark's trace energy pulse. {{storylink|The Reign of Starscream issue 1|The Reign of Starscream #1}}

The Decepticons landed in the [[Earth]] nation-state of Afghanistan. During their attack on a nearby [[United States military]] installation, Barricade used a facade of friendliness to trick nearby human soldiers into lowering their guard, whereupon he slaughtered them at point-blank range. Barricade acted as pilot and chief science officer for the ''[[Nemesis (Movie)|Nemesis]]'' during the quest to find the [[AllSpark]]. When they encountered an [[Ghost 1|alien ship]], he analysed it and discovered that it seemed to be of Cybertronian design, leading to a disagreement between himself and [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] regarding whether to study it or destroy it. He claimed to have chafed under Starscream's leadership, but was willing to tolerate him for the moment.

During Starscream's later absence, Barricade was against [[Blackout (Movie)|Blackout]]'s plan to attack the Autobots, and remained on the ''Nemesis'' while the others got their tailpipes kicked. Following the defeat, he contacted Starscream to warn their leader that Optimus Prime was on his way to the planet below where Starscream had been misleading the occupants of the alien ship. Starscream ordered an attack on the Autobots while their numbers were diminished, so Barricade placed [[Bonecrusher (Movie)|Bonecrusher]] in charge of the assault, while he himself elected to stay on the ship and use it as a distraction. And sang. He supplied support fire as the others fought the Autobots. On Starscream's return, the Decepticons leader was challenged by Blackout, and Barricade decided they should see things resolved once and for all. After Blackout's defeat, Barricade asserted that he'd known what the outcome would be even before the fight began.

When Optimus and Bumblebee entered the fray, Starscream ordered Barricade to leave the ''Nemesis'' to reinforce their numbers. He proved most effective in battle against Bumblebee and [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]]. The fight ended when Starscream was badly damaged by the alien ship and, to Barricade's disbelief, called a retreat. After being active on [[Earth]] for some time, Barricade arrived to pick up [[Frenzy (Movie)|Frenzy]] after the smaller Decepticon's attempt to hack into and sabotage the United States military network on [[Air Force One]]. Using data Frenzy had acquired, the two learned of [[Sector Seven]], "Project Iceman", and [[Archibald Witwicky|Witwicky man]], the discoverer of the entombed [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. The duo were able to use the internet to learn of both Witwicky man's descendants, [[Sam Witwicky|ladiesman217]], and a pair of glasses that Megatron had accidentally marked with the location of the long-lost [[AllSpark]]. Frenzy declared that they needed to find ladiesman217, and Barricade moved out in search of him.

Later, Barricade confronted ladiesman217 regarding his recent [[eBay]] auctions while the human was fleeing [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]], whom the human mistakenly believed was out to harm him. Ladiesman217 fell for Barricade's ruse, and requested the "officer's" help, only for Barricade to transform before him. As ladiesman217 fled, Barricade knocked him onto the hood of an abandoned car, then violently demanded information on eBay item 21153. Ladiesman217 and his [[Mikaela Banes|female friend]], who had been drawn into the encounter, managed to escape him when Bumblebee convinced the boy to trust him, and Barricade pursued both the Autobot and two humans to a junkyard. After temporarily losing and then regaining their position, he charged into battle, activating his mace/rotating blade, and dispatched Frenzy to chase down the humans. However, his battle with Bumblebee ended with Barricade heavily damaged. Considering the fact that Frenzy was decapitated, he got off lucky.

Evidently, though, he recovered, and was back to working order when Frenzy (who had survived and infiltrated Sector Seven) transmitted both Megatron and the AllSpark's location to his fellow Decepticons. When the humans fled with the AllSpark, Barricade joined in the pursuit along with [[Brawl (Movie)|Devastator]] and [[Bonecrusher (Movie)|Bonecrusher]]. Devastator soon broke off on an alternate route, while Barricade and Bonecrusher hit the freeway, making contact with the Autobot/human convoy. Barricade attempted to clear some room for the two Decepticons by activating his sirens; Bonecrusher simply rammed everything in his way. Ladiesman217 recognized Barricade, and warned that they were in danger. [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]], [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]], and [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] aligned to block their access to Bumblebee, who contained the humans and the AllSpark. Barricade returned to Tranquility, where he captured Sam and interrogated him again by chaining him to a hook over a car compacter. He also sent a message to Bumblebee: "The AllSpark for the boy." After the traitorous businessman [[Bruno Carrera]] and Starscream had trapped Optimus Prime in the Colosseum in Rome, [[Italy]], Starscream turned the situation over to Barricade, who was more than delighted to see his old enemy in such a prone state. However, before he could strike the final blow, a bunch of [[human]]s began attacking, which wouldn't have been a problem if they weren't equipped with the scientific genius of [[Kaminari Ishihara]] and [[Petr Andronov]], in addition to [[William Lennox]] and [[Robert Epps]] firing sabot rounds into him. He was about to stomp on the insects when Prime broke free of the trap and engaged him. Once the humans were clear, Optimus pulled a surprise move by jumping out of the pit and dumping rock on top of him.

Once he was buried, Optimus melted the top layer of rock, trapping Barricade long enough for the NEST team to defeat Starscream and take him in. Unfortunately, Barricade was nowhere to be found; Instead, a passing crew working on the subway found a strange new tunnel, leading from the Colosseum to the center of a park. Whatever had dug the new passage overnight was nowhere to be seen. {{storylink|The Veiled Threat}}

With Starscream suffering a nervous breakdown and was sent to a special home (the Decepticons made sure it was a very ''secure'' special home (#12)), Barricade took control of the letters page; however, the Autobots dispatched [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]] to co-run it, much to the Decepticon's irritance. He shares Starscream's contempt for ''you'', the reader (#1), and continues the tradition of threatening violence against ''anyone'' who cosplays as an Autobot (#7). This, however, doesn't stop him bragging to Ironhide when the letters are pro-Decepticon, and at one point he held a popularity contest to see who the kiddies wanted to be "subjugated by this issue!" (#6).

Relations appear to have broken down between the Decepticons and [[DreamWorks]], as they're back to targeting Bay et al for their propaganda films (after a brief [[Revenge of the Fallen (film)#Titan Magazines Transformers movie comics|alliance]] with the second film). Barricade personally enjoyed the scene in the first film when [[Mojo|a dog]] peed on Ironhide though! (#1) Barricade won't even work with the film's tie-in media, refusing to allow his likeness to be used in one of the ROTF video games. (#4) (He claims he never wanted to be in ''[[War for Cybertron]]'' but his tears disprove that (#12)) He later decided fame was more important than principles though, submitting a script and auditioning for a part in the third film by threatening [[Michael Bay]] with death (#8). He's absolutely ''disgusted'' by [[fandom|our]] enjoyment of the films: he lost ''friends'' during filming, man. (#10)

In the early days, he appeared to be separated from the rest of the Decepticons, as his knowledge on their current status is spotty; while he knows [[Wheelie (ROTF)|Wheelie]] has turned traitor, he seemed unaware that [[Ravage (ROTF)|Ravage]] had been terminated. (#4) He later re-established contact, being aware of [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor's]] status and [[the Fallen]]. (#7) He also has a ''shockingly'' bad knowledge of Transformers [[units of time]]. (#8)

He doesn't think much of Starscream's intelligence or ability to lead (a bit of a pisser when Starscream considered ''him'' to be 2IC material!), but ''much'' prefers him over Megatron. (#1) He once explained some of Megatron's flaws, only to get scared and state how he totally respects him ''really''. (#3) He also dislikes [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]], claiming the guy ''never'' pulls his weight and is just Megatron's fave. (#7) On top of that, while he follows the party line and claims the Decepticons have "policies" (#7), he's shown signs of discontent with being a Decepticon: the long hours, the lousy food, the admin work... (#5)

Ironhide has started to offer Barricade the chance to defect to the Autobots. The copper outright rejected this offer the first time, saying he couldn't bear the thought of listening to Optimus moralise. (#9) The second time, however, he merely stated the horrific penalties for defecting Decepticons (#10) and the third, he desperately said he just ''couldn't'' do it, even if it would be nice to hang with other cars for once... BUT HE CAN'T! Ironhide's friendliness is starting to disturb him. (#11)

Barricade has watched the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|original 1980s cartoon]] (#3) and approves of humanity's fascination with giant robots. In contrast, he is ''completely'' bewildered by pop music. (#7)

He's apparently got an eye for [[Female Transformer|the ladies]], making sure to flirt right back when a neutral femme wrote into the letter's column looking to play "bad cop/bad cop pretending to be good cop" with him. (#5)

Like Starscream before him, he somehow has awareness of [[Unicron]]. And Unicron gives him the shits. (#6)

After a high speed pursuit through [[Scramble City (city)|Scramble City]], Barricade managed to ditch [[Sideswipe (ROTF)|Sideswipe]] and used
his [[Moustache Man|holo avatar]] to break into a secure facility. Standing guard while [[Frenzy (Movie)|Frenzy]] raided the computers, he somehow failed to hear Sideswipe bushwhack his partner and was only alerted when Frenzy's crumpled-up form rolled into his foot. After throwing Frenzy at Sideswipe, Barricade engaged the Autobot in combat, managing to defeat him by freezing him to a wall. He then made off with Frenzy and the [[NEST]] access codes. {{storylink|Cyber Missions 6}}

Later, Barricade and [[Lockdown (ROTF)|Lockdown]] confronted [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]]. Looking to steal one of Ironhide's weapons, Lockdown took a missile instead, which blew up in his face. To explore the fledgling universe, he created the astral being known as [[Unicron]], and then subdivided him, creating his twin, Primus. Both brothers were [[Multiversal singularity|multiversal singularities]], unique in all realities, but whereas Unicron could only exist in one dimension at a time, moving between them at will, Primus existed simultaneously in all realities at once. It is suggested, in fact, that the two brothers embody the basic concepts of reality—good and evil, order and chaos—and that their continued existence is necessary for the stability of the multiverse.

As Unicron and Primus went about their appointed task, venturing through the cosmos, it became apparent to Primus that Unicron was a corrupt being, and he took it upon himself to stop the threat posed to all of existence by his sibling. In combat, Primus was no match for Unicron. In cunning, however, he proved himself to his brother's superior when he shifted their battle to the astral plane, and then back to the physical world once more, only to have both their essences manifest within metallic planetoids, leaving them both trapped. It was with this act of sacrifice that Primus hoped to contain Unicron's evil forever. Unfortunately for him, over time, Unicron learned to psionically shape his prison into a giant metallic planet, and Primus followed suit, becoming the mechanical world of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. When Unicron then learned to transform his planetary form even further, into a gigantic robot form, Primus adapted the idea to suit his own ends—rather than transforming his own body, he would create small beings that would be able to change their shape, like Unicron. After performing a "test run" on the moon of [[Protos]], where he successfully created [[Covenant|twelve transforming robotic beings]], {{storylink|Herald, Covenant, Schism, Paradox|Covenant}} he birthed from his own body a group of thirteen robots that possessed the ability to change shape, like Unicron. These were the [[thirteen original Transformers]], each one infused with a fragment of Primus's life essence known as a [[spark]].

The Thirteen were Primus's soldiers in his war with Unicron, which came to its seeming end during a climactic battle in which one of the Thirteen, Megatronus Prime, who would forever afterwards be known as the [[The Fallen|Fallen]], betrayed Primus and became an acolyte of Unicron. The battle ended when the Fallen and Unicron were sucked into a black hole and disappeared from reality. With Unicron gone for now, Primus entered an eons-long slumber, his self-imposed sleep preventing Unicron from detecting him through the mental link the brothers shared. Sheer terror prevented them from carrying out his desire, and the Transformers fled despite Primus' pleas. Primus instead made a stand himself, attempting to dupe Unicron into believing he still retained his full power, but Unicron saw through the deception, and destroyed Xaaron's body. Optimus Prime came to a realization, following Primus' destruction and his retrieval of the lost and contaminated Creation Matrix, that Primus did not mean only for the Transformers to fight his battles for him, but to carry on after he was gone. Formerly the assistant to the Primacron, the ancient genius who created the giant mechanoid Unicron, the robotic being known as the Oracle was badly damaged when Unicron rebelled against his creator. His essence fled to a dead world at the centre of the galaxy, which he used his powers to transform into a verdant, green planet. Though the Covenant's ranks were halved in the battle against Shokaract on prehistoric Earth during the [[Beast Wars (event)|Beast Wars]], they were ultimately able to discover a way to defeat Shokaract and his Unicron-fueled power. The remaining Covenant members returned to their original Primus-spawned energy forms and entered Shokaract's Matrix of Conquest. Al-Badur explained that, millions of years ago, the Quintessons sought to exploit the power of Primus for profit, and to that end, invaded Cybertron and set up numerous barriers to separate Primus from the Transformers. Their first attempt, the [[Plasma energy|Plasma Energy Chamber]], met with failure; next, the Quintessons targeted Vector Sigma itself, surrounding it with a shell program that acted as a barrier between the Transformers and the power and guidance of Primus. {{storylink|Disclosure}} Realizing that the Oracle itself was the Quintessons' shell program, Primal Prime began to fear that all that had come about as a result of its guidance—including [[Optimus Primal]]'s mission to restore a techno-organic balance to Cybertron—was all part of a Quintesson plot, but [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] assured him that Primus worked in mysterious ways.

The Wreckers soon returned to Cybertron, discovering that in their absence, Optimus Primal had achieved his goal of recreating the planet as a technorganic world. In the wake of this overwhelming transformation, the Quintessons had invaded the planet, but they were not the only threat to Cybertron's safety: The Wreckers were also faced with [[Cryotek (RID)|Cryotek]], who had used the legendary [[Divine Light]] to tap into the power of Primus and transform himself into a living god. During the course of the battle that ensued, Primal Prime and [[Apelinq]] were struck by a blast of Primus's power by Cryotek, which wound up merging them into [[Sentinel Maximus]]. At Al-Badur's direction, Sentinel Maximus steered the battle to an interdimensional portal chamber far below the planet's surface, where [[Matrix Templar]]s [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus]] and [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] began draining Primus's power out of Cryotek. To stop them, Cryotek shattered the Divine Light and absorbed Primus's energies directly into himself, where they could not drain it, but as he grappled with Sentinel Maximus, the fused Autobot forced them both through the portal, into a [[transwarp|shapeless interdimensional void]]. Although unable to drain Primus's power any further, Cryotek was sustained in the void by the power he had absorbed, and he was ready to carry on the battle until Primus himself—now unshackled thanks to the destruction of the Oracle in the final stages of Optimus Primal's quest—took an active hand, spiriting Sentinel Maximus away to partake in [[Balancing Act|another battle]] elsewhere in the multiverse.

While all of this was happening on Cybertron, elsewhere in the universe, on [[New Quintessa]], Primus briefly possessed the body of [[Icebird]] so that he could address the Quintesson leader [[Judge Heirodyus]]. Primus shocked the Quintesson by revealing that he had allowed all that had transpired to occur, and he "thanked" Heirodyus for his race's role in the scheme, promising to call upon them again if he ever needed an "evolutionary crisis" to drive his children forward. {{storylink|Wreckers: Finale Part II}}

Primus was the living energy core of Cybertron, as well as the originator of the precious and ancient fuel, [[Energon (Energon)|energon]]. Transformers of this universe believed the stories of Unicron, Primus, and [[Omega Supreme (Energon)|Omega Supreme]] to be only myth and legend until the existence of Unicron was revealed in "[[the Unicron Battles]]" of 2010. With Cybertron left in a disastrous state after the chaos-bringer's attack, large amounts of energon were required to repair the planet, and to search for and acquire the mineral, the united Autobot-Decepticon forces entered into an alliance with the [[Earth Federation]] government.

Primus entered into the equation when the project's head scientist, [[Brian Jones (Energon)|Dr. Brian Jones]], brought his son, [[Kicker Jones|Kicker]], to Cybertron. Terrified of the giant robots surrounding him, Kicker fled, only to find himself tumbling through tunnels into a hidden chamber deep beneath Cybertron's surface. Primus awoke and saved Kicker from what would have been a fatal fall, and for his own reasons, imbued the child with a special gift—the ability to detect energon throughout the [[universe (universe)|universe]]. [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] subsequently discovered Kicker in Primus's chamber, and the god chose to work with the Transformers quite directly, imbuing them with the [[Spark of Combination]], which would allow the Autobots to [[Powerlinx]] and increase their powers. Primus went on to advise Optimus Prime on his actions in order to prepare for the future, including the [[Terrorcon (Energon)|Terrorcon]] invasion, the return of [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], and the next battle with Unicron; although vague at times, he would offer just enough information to allow his children to survive the threats they faced. Primus was often very weak due to the damage done to the planet's surface, and spent most of his time in a mode of stasis to preserve his energy and keep Cybertron's energy grid online.

When Megatron succeeded in reanimating Unicron, most of the Autobot army was critically wounded in the ensuing battle. Primus's plan to contain Unicron's essence in the center of the sun failed when the star collapsed into a massive [[Unicron Singularity|black hole]] which threatened not only Cybertron and the universe, but the entire multiverse itself. His energy drained to the point that he had once again been rendered dormant, Primus could now only be awakened and restored to full power by the four ancient [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, lost to the far reaches of the galaxy in a failed [[space bridge]] experiment eons ago. The magnitude of the threat posed to the multiverse was enough to summon [[Vector Prime]]—one of the original thirteen Transformers, who had been following Unicron through the multiverse and repairing the damage he had done—back to Cybertron to aid the Autobots in the quest for the keys.

After a while, the the Autobots were able to find the focusing device, the [[Omega Lock]], and the keys from [[Velocitron]] and [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]]. Bringing all three together caused the group to be drawn into the consciousness of Primus, who spoke through the three Mini-Cons and told his children to "maintain the balance". {{storylink|Trap}}

Eventually, despite continued attempts by both Megatron and [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] to steal the power of the Cyber Planet Keys, the Autobots were able to gather the keys from [[Velocitron]], the [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]] and [[Earth]], and brought them and their focusing device, the [[Omega Lock]], back to Cybertron. Coupling these three keys with the power of the Matrix, Optimus Prime was able to initiate Primus's transformation from planet mode to robot mode. Communicating with the Autobots through the [[Mini-Con]], [[Jolt (Cybertron)|Jolt]], Primus explained that the destruction of Unicron, the embodiment of the force of evil, had unbalanced the universe, and that only he could seal the black hole and restore order—but to do that, the fourth Cyber Planet Key, from [[Gigantion]], the Giant Planet, was required to reconnect Primus's spark with his body and restore his full power. {{storylink|Cybertron (episode)|Cybertron}}

Attempting to retrieve the Omega Lock, [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] made a rather pointless attack on Primus, only to be smacked down hard. {{storylink|Balance}} Shortly thereafter, when Primus was in the process of channelling some of his power into holding back the ever-growing black hole, Starscream tried again, plunging into the energy beam and absorbing some of Primus's power into himself. Starscream expanded in size until he was as large as Primus himself, but Primus did not take this slight lightly, as he converted Cybertron's moons into a pair of mace weapons and relentlessly pounded Starscream into submission. {{storylink|Titans}}

Eventually, the Autobots were able to acquire the final key, as well as to reactivate the four ancient ships which had carried the keys to the respective worlds ages ago—the [[Atlantis]], the [[Lemuria (Cybertron)|Lemuria]], the [[Hyperborea]] and the [[Ogygia]]. Primus fused the four ships together to form the [[Ark (Cybertron)|Ark]], and with his powers subsequently restored by all four keys, he channelled all of his power through the Ark as a beam, straight into the heart of the black hole. With a massive blast, the black hole was finally sealed, and Primus transformed back into Cybertron—not Cybertron as it had been, but a new Cybertron, infused with the differing aspects of Velocitron, Jungle Planet, Earth and Gigantion, a true paradise for Transformers and humans alike. {{storylink|End}}

While the Autobots were occupied with the quest for the Cyber Planet Keys, Unicron's heralds [[Ramjet (Universe)|Ramjet]] and [[Nemesis Prime (Universe 2003)|Nemesis Prime]] arrived on Cybertron, intent on unleashing the [[Dead Matrix]]—as the Matrix was the antithesis of Unicron, so too would the Dead Matrix ensure the destruction of Primus, thereby totally destabilizing the multiverse and reducing it to a sea of entropic chaos. For the first time, it would be possible for Unicron to strike at Primus in all realities simultaneously, ending their cosmic feud once and for all. Ramjet and Nemesis Prime were ultimately stopped by Vector Prime and allies [[Sentinel Maximus]] and [[Omega Prime]], plucked from the midst of the ''Universe'' conflict by the multiverse-warping energies of the black hole.

The Dead Matrix, however, was cast into the heart of the black hole by Unicron's servant [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]], freeing Unicron's spark and allowing it to adopt a new, diminutive physical form. Unicron participated in the escalating Mini-Con civil war on Cybertron's moons, but when the planet transformed into Primus's robot mode, Unicron fled. The [[Sonic Canyons]] are believed to be his ears, feeding him knowledge of the universe via Vector Sigma, though that is actually beneath [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]]. And the [[Core]] produces his own physical emanation, [[Energon (fuel)|Energon]].

During the civil war, the AllSpark was ejected into space to keep it out of Decepticon hands, eventually floating into the [[Milky Way]], while the Core was corrupted by the [[Dark Energon]]-imbued [[Plasma energy]] Chamber. [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] removed the Chamber, but the damage was done, and the Core had to shut down and reboot to survive. But before leaving, Optimus was bestowed Primus' essence in the form of the Matrix. == Retconning the retcon? ==

It's no secret that, after the Unicron Trilogy, ''Universe'' and the Unicron-heavy [[Dreamwave Productions]] comic books, the [[fandom]] at large was generally quite sick of stories revolving around Unicron and Primus. It is likely no coincidence, then, that the major new universes created in western media between then and [[2010]]—those of the [[IDW Publishing]] comic books, the [[live-action film series|live-action movie]] and the ''[[Transformers Animated (cartoon)|Transformers Animated]]'' cartoon—all eschewed use of the Primus creation myth. But what does this mean for the status of the retcon that states Primus exists in all universes?

The world of the live-action initially presented the Transformers as creations of the enigmatic [[AllSpark]], with no explicit connection drawn between it and Primus. However, connections soon began to emerge. First, Takara's [[World of the Transformers]] website listed the AllSpark as a [[sacred implement]] alongside other Primus-related talismans such as the Matrix and Vector Sigma. Then, the UK's ''[[Transformers (Titan Magazine)|Transformers]]'' magazine introduced Unicron in [[Transformers Comic issue 18|its eighteenth issue]], and then in [[Transformers Comic issue 20|#20]], had the Transformers discover huge versions of their own interior workings deep inside Cybertron, in a clear reference to Cybertron being the transforming body of Primus. Primus was first referred to by name in a profile for The Fallen printed by Titan, which noted that legend claimed he was the creator of the first Transformers, and then again in IDW's ''[[Tales of the Fallen]]'' mini-series. At this point, it is clear that Primus does exist in the movie universe, and that the AllSpark is merely the object through which he acts. In 2010, the new ''[[Transformers: Prime (franchise)|Transformers: Prime]]'' continuity family lent further credence to this reading of events by incorporating it into its own storyline.

Much like the movieverse, the world of ''Transformers Animated'' also depicts the source of Transformer life as a mysterious talisman known as the [[AllSpark]], for which no origin has been given. As far as [[authorial intent]] goes, series art director [[Derrick J. Wyatt]] stated more than once his opinion that Primus does not exist in the ''Animated'' universe [http://twitter.com/DerrickJWyatt/status/1759990650]. The [[Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II|''AllSpark Almanac II'']] treads lightly on the matter in seeming honor of Wyatt's wishes, never revealing Cybertron's origins. It does, however, mention a "battle between primordial titans" as one possible origin for the planet, in an obvious allusion to the Unicron/Primus creation story, and repeatedly brings up Primus and many of the concepts associated with him by name when discussing ''other'' universes.

The IDW universe is less clear on the matter. Writer [[Simon Furman]] outright said that the IDW universe would have "no Primus. No Unicron". In accordance with this, the Furman-penned ''[[Stormbringer (comics)|Stormbringer]]'', rather than have Transformers swear by Primus, instead had them swear by [[Primacron]], but a monkeywrench was thrown into the works when Primus's name was heard being taken in vain in [[Eric Holmes]]'s [[Megatron Origin issue 4|''Megatron Origin'' #4]]. Furman attempted to justify this on his blog by claiming that this was not ''the'' Primus, but simply "something or someone" called Primus that had existed some point. [http://simonfurman.wordpress.com/2008/01/14/all-this-and-devastation-4/] With Furman's removal as the primary architect of the IDW universe, however, it's hard to predict what will happen next.

Ultimately, there is ''very'' little to say that Primus does not exist in the IDW or ''Animated'' universe, besides the fact that creators involved with those universes do not want to include the character in their stories. After all, just because Primus doesn't ''appear'', or characters are unaware of him, it doesn't mean he doesn't ''exist''. It wouldn't be the only time this has happened: the occupants of the parallel ''[[Shattered Glass (franchise)|Shattered Glass]]'' universe were largely ignorant of Primus until a [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper from another universe]] mentioned him. It seems quite safe to conclude that, as of this moment, the retcon has not yet itself been retconned... and we kinda hope it isn't, because then some poor sod is going to have rewrite this article from the ground up.
