Umm..
IF I recall correctly Astrotrain and Blitzwing came out in '85.
Might be wrong.

Astrotrain and Blitzwing were from 1985. If I recall Armada Laserbeak said Triple Changer on his box. As did several Cybertron redeco Mini-Cons with weapon modes (like Anti-Blaze, Prowl and Scythe). I think Cybertron Dark Scorponok and Cryo Scourge as well.

The toy catalogues list Metroplex, Trypticon, and Fortress Maximus with having three modes as opposed to others like the Scramble City leaders with unmentioned intermediate modes. There should really be some discussion what what makes a triple changer and what doesn't.

The translation show bible for Beast Wars Neo refers to guys like Big Convoy, Longrack, Coroda, Heinlad, Break and Stampy as "three-changing" (yes, Heinlad turns from robot to beast to statue!) I own the voyager version, and I am sure there is no official jet mode and the leader one is so inflexible you couldn't make up a third mode if you tried. == Missing Characters? ==

Shouldn't the character (and by proxy, the toys) of Punch/Counterpunch count as a Triple Changer? I always considered him one, since he had three distinct forms. Sure, he didn't have two vehicle forms, like most the others, but it should still count.
Also, what about Doubledealer? If I recall, he's always been billed as a Triple Changer.

Laserbeak was at Soundwave's side during the assault on Autobot City that nearly destroyed the Ark. In a surprising lack of judgement, he flew past a rampaging Optimus Prime, leading the Autobot leader to where Soundwave was disguised as a light fixture. Luckily for both Decepticons, they were in such a place Optimus was unable to get a clear shot and managed to retreat.

Laserbeak was with Soundwave when the Combaticons and Starscream brought Optimus in as their prisoner. He also somehow missed the massive city-sized Autobot who snuck up on the Decepticons and proceeded to beat Megatron to death. He wisely fled with the remaining Decepticons.

Laserbeak was instrumental in reviving Megatron in Soundwave's laboratory in Kaon, recovering the Techvolt used to bring the Decepticon leader back to life. This earned him an affectionate scratch on the head from the notoriously unemotional Communications Officer. When Megatron tried to do the same, the irate Minicon nipped at him, amusing the warlord.

During the assault on the Autobot defenses keeping Trypticon prisoner, Laserbeak was with Soundwave throughout the battle. He was next seen aboard the Nemesis, Trypticon's new form. He joined Soundwave and Rumble in boarding the Ark as it fled towards a Space Bridge, successfully fending off the Autobots and destroying their anti-air cannons. This allowed the Decepticons to send in Bruticus. He wasn't seen after, though presumably he was sucked into the collapsing Space Bridge along with everyone else.

[[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]] is still hard at work decoding coordinates, while [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] boasts about his defeat of Optimus. Soundwave soon comes up with another set of coordinates, and [[Knock Out (Prime)|Knock Out]] insists on going. Though Megatron is skeptical, recalling [[Tunnel Vision|the last time]] the doctor tried to obtain a relic, Knock Out insists he won't fail this time, and borrows Soundwave's [[Resonance Blaster]].

In the [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|Autobot base]], [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] is likewise decoding coordinates. [[Smokescreen (Prime)|Smokescreen]] annoys everyone by boasting it is his destiny to be a great warrior and being generally exuberant. To his disappointment, when Optimus decodes a set of coordinates, [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] and [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] are the ones selected to go on the mission, and he is left at base. Arcee and Bumblebee arrive at a lakeside and spy the second [[Omega Key]] sitting out in the open, but Knock Out is already there, waiting. Using the Resonance Blaster, both Autobots are sent flying and when they try to flank the Decepticon, he shoots it at the ground, raising a cloud of dust so he can use it as cover to zap them. By the time Arcee and Bumblebee recover, Knock Out is long gone with the key.

Back on the ''[[Trypticon (Prime)|Nemesis]]'', Megatron inspects the relic and wonders if it is a decoy, though Knock Out protests the Autobots fought too desperately for it. Soundwave decodes more coordinates which Megatron believes will provide them with more answers, but when Knock Out declares to investigate, Megatron instead gives him the task of analyzing the key and its purpose. Meanwhile, Bumblebee undergoes repairs, and Smokescreen's swagger continues to get on Arcee's nerves so she goes to find some peace and quiet. Bulkhead reminds Smokescreen that the war has been going on a long time and he needs to have patience to work as a team player.

[[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] has finished refining his [[Red Energon]], but finding it slow work and with only a small yield of a one-time use. Luckily the ''[[Harbinger]]'' computer picks up more Decepticon activity, and Starscream decides he can use the Red Energon to obtain a more valuable artifact.

The Autobots gain a new set of coordinates, and Bulkhead and Smokescreen roll out, though Arcee reminds Bulkhead to keep an eye on their eager comrade. The pair arrive on a forested mountainside where [[Dreadwing (Prime)|Dreadwing]] is waiting. The Decepticon knocks them flat before flying off, and the two Autobots realize that Dreadwing has mined the trees... '''all''' of the trees. They manage to outrun the explosions, and Bulkhead sends Smokescreen after the relic while he goads Dreadwing into a fight. As they exchange blows, Dreadwing plants a bomb on Bulkhead's back, and after Bulkhead manages to knock him flat, smugly sets it to explode. Unfortunately for Dreadwing, Bulkhead already noticed the bomb and transferred it to his back during the fight, and though Dreadwing throws the bomb away, it goes off close enough to knock him out.

Smokescreen meanwhile uncovers the Omega Key, only to be rendered unconscious by a blow from behind. When Bulkhead wakes him, the key is already gone. Smokescreen is deflated by his failure, but as they return through the [[GroundBridge]], Bulkhead reminds him that they need all four keys to revive [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Starscream, hiding nearby with the key he grabbed, overhears them talking, and regards the key he holds with new respect and ambition.

Back at base, Smokescreen exclaims his inability of securing the key and Arcee lectures him on realistic expectations and tells him he needs to be a team player. Upset, Smokescreen leaves the base and Optimus, saying the young Autobot needs to clear his head, returns to decoding coordinates. On the ''Nemesis'', Megatron is unhappy at Dreadwing's failure, and checks with Soundwave regarding the project to find where the Autobot base is located. Soundwave reports that he has [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]] scouting around [[Jasper]]. As both sides complete their decoding work, the final set of coordinates resolve into an image—a picture of Smokescreen himself, to both sides' surprise. Unfortunately when Optimus tries to call in Smokescreen, the rookie does not answer due to deactivating his comlink, and has instead fallen into Laserbeak's sights. Laserbeak fires on Smokescreen, who transforms to confront the drone, only to be knocked flat by Soundwave's Resonance Blaster. When the Autobots arrive at the location, they are just in time to see Soundwave dragging their unconscious friend back to the ''Nemesis'' through the Decepticon GroundBridge.

When Orion returned to Iacon, Alpha Trion asked him why he trusted Megatron. Orion felt Megatron would have claimed responsibility for the attacks if he were behind them. Awed by Orion's intuition and empathy for the lower class Cybertronians in Kaon, Alpha Trion wondered if Orion was the Prime foretold in the Covenant: the Prime that would save Cybertron from a civil war. When Sentinel was kidnapped, Orion requested Alpha Trion arrange a hearing with the [[Autobot High Council|High Council]]. Alpha Trion oblidged and passed on his beliefs about Orion to the Councilors, and it was at the hearing [[Halogen (Prime)|Halogen]] renamed Orion Optimus Prime: the act that angered Megatron and tore the planet into [[Autobot]]s and [[Decepticon]]s.

Alpha Trion recorded the events of war in the Covenant. On the [[Communication Grid]] he witnessed the beautiful and terrible destruction of [[Crystal City]]. He continued maintaining the Hall of Records with a skeleton crew, but he felt the stirrings of battle in his Spark, proclaiming he would fight once more if the Decepticons broke the siege of Iacon. Optimus visited after the victory of [[Kalis]], asking if they could win the war itself. Alpha Trion replied only a being who could tell the future could answer that, and it was then he revealed to Optimus it was he who suggested that the High Council appoint him Prime.

When Megatron discovered the existence of [[Dark Energon]] on [[Trypticon (Prime)|Trypticon]] Station, Alpha Trion sensed what happened and told the Autobots of the essence of [[Unicron]], revealing he had deleted much of the information regarding Trypticon's purpose from the [[DataNet]] as he felt knowledge of it was too dangerous. When Megatron attempted to steal the [[Plasma energy]] Chamber, Alpha Trion informed Optimus that [[Teletraan-1]] had reactivated [[Omega Supreme (WFC)|Omega Supreme]]. Afterwards, Alpha Trion gave Optimus advice when he went to [[Kaon]] to rescue Sentinel Prime, and when his body was returned Alpha Trion eulogized him with the traditional liturgy of the Passing of the Primes. It was then Alpha Trion made Optimus's Prime rank official, rather than de facto.

After Optimus returned from purging Cybertron's [[core]] of Dark Energon, he began the construction of the ''[[Ark (WFC)|Ark]]''. He asked Alpha Trion if it would work, but the Archivist responded that if it didn't, the Autobots would die with Cybertron. At this point, despite Optimus's pleas, he was refusing his share of Energon, and refused a place on the ''Ark'', explaining the planet would not permit him to die. He told the Autobots about the last functioning [[space bridge]], during which he made a big giveaway about his identity, seemingly joking he was older than that space bridge and he still functioned. Alpha Trion oversaw the ''Ark'''s construction within the [[Well of All Sparks]], while Optimus distracted Megatron aboard the ''[[Eight Track (WFC)|Eight Track]]'' with a false exodus. With the city-sized ship completed, Alpha Trion reiterated he would not be coming, stating [[Vector Sigma]] would keep him alive. Alpha Trion remained in the [[Hall of Records]] after the departure of the Ark, curiously left alone to attend his duties as Archivist by [[Shockwave (Prime)|Shockwave]] and his Decepticon forces. Alpha Trion received regular reports from [[Ultra Magnus (Prime)|Ultra Magnus]] and his [[Wrecker]]s, the primary Autobot resistance force left on Cybertron. Alpha Trion remained concerned about his protégé, Optimus Prime, and his quest for the AllSpark and the final fates of the other Thirteen. He marveled at [[Wheeljack (Prime)|Wheeljack]]'s suggestion of re-mastering the [[space bridge|Space Bridge]] technology to send [[Chaindrive|an Autobot]] after the Ark and learn how the mission was proceeding.

As Wheeljack's plot was set into motion, Alpha Trion was forced to deal with an ever-more brazen Shockwave, who began making appearances in the Hall of Records. Shockwave tried to cow Alpha Trion by calling him a traitor, but the wily ol' buzzard calmly retorted that he was far older than the Decepticon regime, and a traitor to nothing...he was a flat-out ''enemy'' of Shockwave's, simple as that. Taken aback by this show of defiance, Shockwave retreated from the Hall for the time being.

Shortly after he successfully launched a volunteer named Chaindrive through space-time towards the signals of the Matrix, Alpha Trion was officially "captured" by Shockwave and detained under house arrest in his quarters at the Hall of Records. Alpha Trion cared little for the change in circumstances, for he had convinced Shockwave to leave him his Quill and Covenant to continue archiving history as it came to him. The Covenant revealed to him signs that [[Nexus Prime]] and [[Vector Prime]] had both reappeared in the flow of history, if only briefly, and Alpha Trion was content with that for now. {{storylink|Transformers: Exiles|Exiles}}

In the final days of the war for Cybertron, [[Smokescreen (Prime)|Smokescreen]] was assigned to guard Alpha Trion, whom he came to consider a great mentor and a true friend. Alpha Trion was inside the Iacon hall of records when it was attacked, and his final fate was unknown to anyone. Following the [[Great Exodus]], Alpha Trion sent the contents of the Iacon Hall of Records to a remote, seemingly unimportant planet named Earth, as the [[Covenant of Primus]] had foretold that an important chapter of the war against the Decepticons would be decided there, and Alpha Trion wished Optimus Prime to have these important artifacts at his disposal. {{storylink|Alpha/Omega}}
