Optimus Primal—named in honor of the famous [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]]—was one of the Maximals who inhabited a [[Jungle Planet (colony)|distant jungle world]]. When [[Unicron]], the [[Terrorcon (ROTB)|Terrorcon]]s, and their [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] [[Scorponok (ROTB)|drones]] attacked, Primal and a small group of Maximals fought their way through to meet their leader [[Apelinq (ROTB)|Apelinq]], guardian of the [[Transwarp Key]] that allowed their race to cross time and space. Aware that the Terrorcon leader [[Scourge (ROTB)|Scourge]] would try to claim the key, Apelinq passed both the mantle of command and the Transwarp Key to Optimus, who used the key to escape their doomed world moments before Unicron devoured their home. Optimus and the three remaining Maximals—[[Airazor (ROTB)|Airazor]], [[Cheetor (ROTB)|Cheetor]], and [[Rhinox (ROTB)|Rhinox]]—fled across space and time to ancient [[Earth]], where they established a new base of operations in southern [[Peru]]. Originally, Optimus established a hidden tomb where they stored the Transwarp Key; in time, however, the Maximals came to befriend the humans who took up residence in the region and entrusted them with the device instead.

The Maximals remained in hiding for many thousands of years, until, in the year [[1994]], a sequence of events set in motion by the accidental discovery of the Transwarp Key Earth led a team of Autobots and their human allies [[Noah Díaz]] and [[Elena Wallace]] to the jungles of South America. After Airazor stopped a brief standoff between him and Optimus Prime, Primal agreed to help them retrieve the second half of the Key before the Terrorcons retrieved it, and led them to a nearby village to meet with the latest guardians of the key.

However, the next morning, Scourge's corruption finally overcame Airazor, who'd been previously infected with his corrosive powers during a prior confrontation, and after a brief battle Primal was forced to put his infected teammate down for good. However, the battle allowed Scourge to get a hold of both halves of the Transwarp Key, and used them to open a portal through which to summon Unicron to Earth. The Autobots and Maximals took part in the final battle to retrieve the Transwarp Key and close the portal, with Primal killing a disarmed [[Battletrap (ROTB)|Battletrap]] by smashing his head to bits with his own wrecking ball. Although Optimus Prime successfully killed Scourge and destroyed the key, the imploding transwarp portal forced Primal and his allies into a retreat. However, just when it seemed Noah's attempt to rescue Optimus Prime from the imploding portal ended in failure, Primal arrived in the nick of time to help pull the Autobot leader to safety. [[Nobuyuki Okude]], one of the original ''Diaclone'' designers who oversaw the production of the modified toys for Hasbro's ''Transformers'' line, would later rise to become Takara's vice president and for a brief time even held the position of the company's president.

===Tomy before the merger===
Tomy (トミー) was founded by Eiichiro Tomiyama in 1924 as '''Tomiyama Toy Factory'''. In 1963 they changed their name to '''Tomy'''. Their American branch opened in 1973, with branches following in Canada in 1981 and the UK in 1982.

Two pre-merger Transformers designed by Tomy were [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]] and [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]], patterned after their ''{{w|Plarail}}'' and ''[[Zoids]]'' toylines, respectively, by designer Junichi Ishikawa (石川順一).

===The merger===
After a series of commercial failures, May [[2005]] saw the public announcement that Takara would merge with rival toymaker Tomy. As of April [[2006]], both companies ceased to exist and made way for the new company, TakaraTomy. Fortunately, Tomy had established a healthy working relationship with Hasbro since [[1999]], long before their merger with Takara—which is why the merger didn't have any major effects on the established Hasbro/Takara cooperation (including the [[toy]] development process).

Oddly, "TakaraTomy" is only the merged company's official name in Japan. For the international, English-speaking world, the merged company is officially simply named "Tomy", for pragmatic reasons (as most of Takara's internationally renowned brands are distributed through other companies, such as Hasbro, outside Japan). Indeed, Tomy is mentioned as the licensor on all ''Transformers'' toy product released by Hasbro after the merger.

Despite this, the packaging for Hasbro's ''Transformers'' toys released under the ''[[Transformers: Generations (toyline)|Generations]]'' banner following the "brand unification" introduced in 2018, which thus far includes the ''[[Studio Series]]'' and the ''[[War for Cybertron Trilogy (toyline)|War for Cybertron Trilogy]]'' including ''[[War for Cybertron: Siege|Siege]]'', ''[[War for Cybertron: Earthrise|Earthrise]]'' and ''[[War for Cybertron: Kingdom|Kingdom]]'', features a very prominent "TakaraTomy" logo on the front side of every packaging along with a "Hasbro" logo of equal size.

Tomy has its own label, "Tomy Direct", for releasing imported Hasbro products (such as [[Star Wars (franchise)|Star Wars]] toys) in Hasbro packaging in Japan, similar to Takara's [[USA Edition]]s. The huge difference is that USA Editions might still sport differences with their Hasbro counterparts, whereas Tomy Direct releases are ''really'' just the Hasbro toys.

There's no real nice way to say this, but for much of Takara's history the company mascot was a racist blackface doll named Dakko-chan, until pressure from Japanese civil rights group {{w|The Association to Stop Racism Against Blacks|The Association to Stop Racism Against Black People}} (黒人差別をなくす会) motivated a branding change in [[1990]].
