Trapped in Cybertron's past, the Aerialbots learn the truth about Megatron and the rise of Optimus Prime.

Synopsis
Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker are racing through the skies with the Aerialbots in hot pursuit. They have kidnapped human dignitaries for unknown, but certainly nefarious, purposes. The Aerialbots are debating amongst themselves in pretty stark terms if humans are worth saving. After they outmaneuver the Decepticons, Starscream dumps the hostages in mid-air. He and the others escape as the Aerialbots break off to save the humans.

Back at Autobot headquarters, the Aerialbots talk amongst themselves about their admiration of the Seekers, to the ire of the other Autobots. Teletraan I breaks in before the argument gets out of hand and alerts Optimus Prime to strange energy readings emanating from Cybertron. They board Omega Supreme and head into the stratosphere to investigate.

Under the ocean, Megatron gripes about the Aerialbots and losing air supremacy. Soundwave reports in that the Autobots have left earth, and Megatron goes after them across the space bridge. On Cybertron, Megatron explains that he has a time machine called a Kronosphere that he planned on using to steal energy from the past. Now, he wants to set a trap for the Aerialbots and send them back into the past.

The Autobots arrive on a dark and dingy Cybertron, and are attacked by Starscream and the others. Slingshot tries to get the Decepticons to stop attacking and talk to them. Starscream and the others drop down for a chat while Silverbolt frets. After gaining their trust, Starscream leads them right onto Megatron's Kronosphere. Silverbolt tries to warn them that it's a trap but it's too late. Megatron activates the device, intending to send them back to the beginning of time. The Aerialbots are encased in a purple bubble and disappear.

Seconds later, Optimus Prime and the other Autobots ram through the wall of the building and attack. Prime shoots the machine in order to stop it from trapping the Aerialbots in the past. The Decepticons retreat and Optimus orders the machine repaired. He estimates it has sent the Aerialbots 9 million years into the past to Cybertron's Golden Age.

The bubble bursts and the five planes reappear on Cybertron, but it's a different world than the one they left. This Cybertron is bright and alive. The Aerialbots admire the scenery and argue about whose fault it was that the planet was trashed. Slingshot isn't ready to blame the Decepticons and says they are misunderstood. They are interrupted by a small 'bot who introduces himself as Orion Pax. He works at the docks unloading energy shipments. Orion's friend Dion and girlfriend Ariel introduce themselves too. Dion alerts them to come outside and see the new type of flying robot that everyone is talking about. The Aerialbots go out and see Megatron, Soundwave and Shockwave flying overheard. Orion and Dion admire the flying robots, and Silverbolt warns them away from their hero worship. But does anybody listen to him? Nooooo.

After Orion goes back to work unloading ships, he is approached by a visitor who introduces himself as Megatron. Orion shows him around but when they reach the energy storehouse Megatron orders the Decepticons concealed outside to attack. When Orion tries to stop him, Megatron mercilessly shoots him and his two friends. The Aerialbots arrive after the battle to find the three Autobots inoperative.

Back in the present, Megatron is planning a counterattack to regain the Kronosphere. In nearby wreckage, Shockwave spots the body of a Guardian Robot, sans head, and Megatron plans to reactivate it. Meanwhile, Optimus, Wheeljack, Ironhide and Ratchet are still trying to repair the device.

In the past, the Aerialbots are carrying Orion's lifeless body to someone who can help. Slingshot is singing a very different tune now; he swears revenge on Megatron. A mustached figure from a doorway calls to them and suggests they go someplace else for help. Decepticon attacks have caused severe casualties among the Autobots. After the Aerialbots ask again, he agrees to fix Orion. After an unknown amount of time, the stranger emerges with a rebuilt Orion Pax, now going by the name Optimus Prime. Prime and the Aerialbots rush off to join the battle, while the stranger muses about rebuilding Ariel into a female warrior named Elita One.

Just as the tide of battle is turning in the Decepticons' favor, Megatron is confronted by Optimus Prime, who takes out the entire Decepticon front line by himself. Meanwhile, the Aerialbots have returned to the docks to find the Decepticons raiding the energy stores.

Flashing to the present, the time machine has been fixed, but Megatron and the Decepticons attack. To further complicate things, they let loose the Guardian Robot against the Autobots.

Back in the past, the Aerialbots set energy pack charges to blow up the storehouse in order to keep the energy out of Megatron's hands. Unfortunately, they are trapped inside because Decepticon warriors are blocking the exits. Silverbolt orders Slingshot to blow up the storehouse anyway. Just as the charges go off, the Kronosphere scoops them up and brings them back to the present. They merge into Superion and take out the Guardian Robot. Megatron retreats and an enraged Slingshot yells after him.

As they head back to Omega Supreme, Silverbolt describes their adventures in the past, and Optimus finally recognizes the Aerialbots as the ones who saved him. Ratchet demands to know what's going on and Optimus starts to tell the tale.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* Throughout the episode, the characters' colors are somewhat grayed out and desaturated.
* The quality of the character artwork is noticeably low. Throughout the episode, characters frequently have odd proportions, imprecise delineation, fat necks, curves where they should have straight lines... and the animators display a real fondness for putting big round juicy lips on just about everybody, from the Aerialbots to Orion and company to Megatron. Despite all this, a few random closeups are drawn at a much higher level of quality, in the distinctive Toei style.
* Rather than count all the times it happens, we'll simply note that Starscream is missing his wing Decepticon insignias in many, many shots.
* In the close-up shot of jet-mode Silverbolt, he's flying with his landing gear down (odd in itself, plus it wasn't there in the shot immediately before), and his Autobot symbol is just a featureless red rectangle.
*The air battle is filled with errors:
** Slingshot is coloured like Air Raid when Skywarp is bearing down upon him
** Skydive fires purple lasers, instead of the usual Autobot orange, at Skywarp. When the lasers hit Skywarp in the next shot, they're orange.
** The black panels on Thundercracker's hull are mis-aligned as he flees from Slingshot and Fireflight.
** When Slingshot and Fireflight fly past the camera, Fireflight has three thrusters.
** Slingshot's cockpit is unpainted as they climb after Thundercracker.
** Starscream's air intakes are gray instead of red as he prepares to dump the humans.
** The same set of cries is recycled three times in a row as the hostages fall, and later on again for the Aerialbots as they're launched back in time.
** Starscream initially dumps 7 hostages. In the next shot, 14 hostages fall past the Aerialbots. In the shot after that, the Aerialbots rescue 10 hostages.
** And those "dignitaries" sure dress quite casual, especially the two that seem to sport mohawks! They must not have been at work when captured!
* Coloring errors:
**The top of Slingshot's head is consistently colored white in this episode, where it was orange in "The Key to Vector Sigma."
**While Megatron berates the Seekers for allowing the Aerialbots to defeat them, Starscream's lower right arm is coloured red instead of blue.
** Shockwave's chest window is colored the same purple as the rest of him as he flies over the loading docks.
** As Wheeljack works on the Kronosphere, the inside rims of Optimus's chest-windows are glass blue instead of red, and Wheeljack's "ears" are curved when they should be straight.
** As Alpha Trion decides to rename Ariel into Elita One, his chin is white rather than gray.

* Omega's tank component just flies off-screen when he transforms to base mode, and doesn't reappear (and it likewise flies in from off-screen when the same sequence is used in reverse on Cybertron.)
* The Autobots enter Omega's rocket component through the thruster, which ignites like 1 second after they all walk in. Autobot flambé, anyone?
* Megatron's gun barrel is drawn bulbous and rounded as he communicates with Soundwave.
* The Decepticons exit the space bridge elevator not into Shockwave's spic and span Decepticon Headquarters complex, but into a beat-up abandoned green building. Possibly the animators conflated 'con HQ with the warehouse where the Kronosphere is set up.
*Omega Supreme disappears in a couple of frames during his transformation sequence. A second later, the animation skips backwards so that Omega is shown lowering his arms to his side twice in a row.
* "Those Autobots are weird" - Skydive, Air Raid and Fireflight are all flying with their nose landing gear down.
*When Silverbolt notifies Prime about the other Aerialbots leaving with Starscream, Prime's smokestacks are drawn totally wrong (they're white instead of gray and are sort of melting into his trailer).
* "I don't buy that story about everything being the Decepticons' fault" - Slingshot's chest is too wide, and his arms and head are too small.
*When Fireflight asks Orion what he does, Orion is drawn mouthing the words.
*The bottom of the screen has thin black lines on it for several shots just after the Aerialbots meet Orion.
*When Orion and the Aerialbots enter the loading bay for the first time, we see a vehicle that shares Dion's vehicle mode and colors unloading cargo. Right after that, Dion drives into the hangar from outside.
*Skydive explains to Fireflight why Megatron wouldn't recognize them 9 million years in the past. Skydive is then shown mouthing Fireflight's "Huh?" reaction to his own statement. Huh?
* The next few shots suffer from some choppy editing. The scene abruptly cuts away from Slingshot asking "So what's the big deal?" to Megatron and Orion at the warehouse. Dion's line "Oh wow, it's one of those flying robots" gets cut off by a shot change, as does the background music.
* The cube-bots take off into the air, but their flight sound effect gets cut off half-way through the shot.
*Ariel is shown with the Aerialbots running back to the warehouse, but she's already in it (and gets shot down by Megatron) before they arrive. That was reused from the scene when Silverbolt said "That was Megatron".
*When Ariel is shot by Megatron, her cel is not properly aligned with the background, so one of her legs floats over the energon cubes.
*After all the fuss over those "new robots who can fly", Orion gets a jet sound effect as he jumps up to attack Megatron.
*As Megatron flies out of the warehouse, his cannon is on his left arm.

*Thundercracker (in addition to having the wrong voice) is missing the metallic flange in his voice as he notes how the guardian robots used to give the Decepticons "a pounding back in the old days." In the same shot, Skywarp's helmet seems to be drooping.
*In the aerial shot of Megatron's transport drones entering the warehouse, they disappear before reaching the doorway.
*As the Aerialbots observe the drones entering the warehouse, the drones are colored like Dion rather than their correct olive green and purple. The error repeats a moment later as the last drones enter the warehouse.
* "...Then, blow it up." - the drones are shown driving in to the warehouse, in front of the cubes, but they're mislayered, miscolored and misplaced.
<!-- the "clunk" is from the Decepticons landing. *Just before the Aerialbots return to the present, Megatron and the Decepticons land and fire their weapons, but the weapons make a "clunking" sound instead of the usual blasts. -->
*When the Aerialbots return, they appear a few seconds apart for some reason. Silverbolt transforms immediately and is missing his side windows. The rest of the Aerialbots simply run out of the energy field, but they're also given transformation sounds (which doesn't make sense as they were already in their robot modes in the past).
*As the Aerialbots start to form Superion, Slingshot and Fireflight form Superion's legs while Skydive and Air Raid form his arms. While this is different to their traditional placement, as Scramble City-type limbs, not altogether "wrong". However, once Superion is complete, Slingshot and Skydive have morphed into each other, likewise for Fireflight and Air Raid, resulting in the "normal" Superion.
*Megatron and the Decepticons fly out of the building, but the next shot shows them flying over the hole on the roof rather than through it.
* As the Autobots walk off into the sunset, Slingshot's canopy disappears.
*The original broadcast version of the episode had the entirety of act two's soundtrack incorrectly played back at too slow a speed, noticeably pitching down the dialogue and music. This was corrected for the Kid Rhino DVDs, but when Shout! Factory went back to the broadcast masters for their original audio tracks, this error was re-introduced to their DVD of the episode in order to restore it to its original broadcast version.

Continuity errors
* Superhuman hostages:
** The humans the Seekers dump at the beginning of the episode somehow don't die after plummeting several hundred feet and landing on the metal bodies of the Aerialbots. Your wiki editors are somehow unsurprised by this.
* It is unclear why the Aerialbots (bar Silverbolt) are so impressed by the Seekers considering the ease with which the Decepticons were defeated.
*Optimus Prime somehow knows exactly what the Kronosphere is doing despite the fact he was out of earshot when Megatron said it.
* Silverbolt's line "That was Megatron...I'm sure of it" makes no sense - Fireflight and Skydive already identified him several scenes earlier.
* Speaking of these scenes, it's not clear at all why the Aerialbots are rushing back to the docks because of Megatron - they were at the docks when Megatron flew past, and were never shown leaving; and why is Ariel with them? Did the animators think she was supposed to be included with the... Aerialbots?
* In "The Search for Alpha Trion", Optimus Prime had no idea that Alpha Trion was his creator, despite the fact he has a direct interaction with him here.
* Skydive's assertion that "there's no way we can get out of here" seems dubious - they're a combiner team!
* Flashbacks in this episode depict the Autobots on Cybertron nine million years ago using energon cubes, despite the pre-movie cartoon's otherwise-consistent presentation of the cubes as the province of Decepticons alone, about which the Autobots knew nothing before 1984. The actual term "energon" is never used to refer to the cubes in this episode, however, so it may be an error on the animation level, rather than the scripting level.

Continuity notes
*This takes place "a few weeks" after "The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2", according to Optimus Prime.
* Starscream is seen effecting repairs on Skywarp.
*This episode introduces a lot of major mythological elements from the Generation 1 cartoon, including the origin of Optimus Prime and Elita One and showing the start of the Third Great War.
* While the Decepticons often threaten or injure humans, this is the first time they are shown explicitly trying to kill them via a direct act (Starscream dropping them from the sky).
*Coincidental or not, this episode marks the return of Starscream after a three episode hiatus, after Megatron seriously injured him in "Hoist Goes Hollywood".
* Cybertron has a river!
*The Aerialbots essentially succumb to that old time travel cliché of becoming their own grandfather, as they're instrumental in the (re-)creation of their own creator, Optimus Prime.

*Dion's fate is never revealed. Fans have speculated that he was also rebuilt and reformatted by Alpha Trion into a familiar character, with Ultra Magnus and Ironhide being the two most popular suspects. Of course, it's entirely possible he simply died. Timelines presented yet another outcome: he was rebuilt into... Dion.
*This episode is one of the two episodes before the movie featuring a genuine female Transformer.
*The headless guardian robot reactivated by Megatron and co. is totally the same one Megatron decapitated in the past, and the ruined building housing the Kronosphere is the very same warehouse the Aerialbots destroyed.
* Gadgets and powers:
** Starscream's interior apparently has enough room for <s>7</s> <s>14</s> 10 humans.
** Shockwave repairs the Guardian Robot with beams from his eye.
*The events of the minicomic "64 Cybertron Urban Defense Robot GADEP" take place around this time period, showing Megatron raiding more energon storage facilities.
*Dion's profile in Timelines #4, "Wings of Honor", gave a name to the specific area of the docks which Orion and the others worked. Storage yard 67 was named for e-HOBBY Orion Pax and Dion's Japanese identification number.

Real-world references
* The sound effect in the opening shot, as the three Decepticon jets swoop past the camera, is a common one used in many Loony Toons cartoons, particularly for the Roadrunner.
* Star Wars sound effect:
** Millennium Falcon engine burst as Silverbolt explains the importance of the "stupid humans."
** Falcon engine burst again as the Aerialbots take off on Cybertron.
** Falcon engine burst again as Orion (one of those old bots who can't fly) flies up to attack Megatron.
** Clashing lightsabers as the fuel warehouse explodes.

Trivia
*Orion Pax's design appears to be based on an early Ultra Magnus concept - distinct from the Powered Convoy recolour that ultimately formed the basis for that character - by Floro Dery.
*In an interview on the Kid Rhino DVD set, writer David Wise says that the meeting between Orion Pax and Megatron happened differently in the original version of the script. Megatron was to blast Orion's arm off and then use it to decapitate him. Sunbow, fearing the scene was too violent, had it changed.
*For whatever reason, voice actor John Stephenson wasn't in this episode and thus Thundercracker and Alpha Trion had different voices; Alpha Trion's voice was Corey Burton's, and Thundercracker's was that of voice director Wally Burr. Burr also filled in as Jazz in "Kremzeek!" and Ratchet in "Masquerade".
* When Skywarp gets shot down, he transforms to robot mode. The same animation is used again, recolored, when Thundercracker gets shot down... and two more times on Cybertron when the jets approach the Aerialbots to talk. Hey, who would ever notice?
*Footage from this episode was used to represent a historical video in "Transform and Roll Out", the opening movie for Transformers Animated. Most notably, a shot of Dion shielding his eyes with his hand was used out of context to represent an Autobot saluting.
While siphoning the Earth of its energy, the Decepticons uncover a long-lost colleague of Starscream.

Synopsis
What’s this? A blanket of snow over the Ark's volcano? The Autobots and Spike engaged in a snowball fight? In July? In the middle of the desert? Something is amiss with the world’s weather. According to Teletraan I's scans, temperatures are 40 degrees below normal and falling rapidly.

Somewhere in the Arctic Circle, the Decepticons have tapped a crystal shaft leading directly to the Earth's core to siphon the planet's heat energy into energon cubes. While excavating the icy caverns surrounding the crystal, Rumble uncovers a Transformer frozen in the ice. Starscream recognizes it as his old colleague Skyfire.

The Autobots finally pinpoint the source of the Earth’s energy drain, and Teletraan I confirms Decepticon activity surrounding a crystal outgrowth in the Arctic Circle. Optimus Prime hastily assembles an assault team, and they roll out, with Spike and Sparkplug accompanying.

The Decepticons have hauled the frozen titan out of the ice and proceed to repair it. Starscream explains his past: millions of years ago, before the final falling out between the Autobots and Decepticons, Starscream and Skyfire were both explorers. They were charting an unknown planet, Earth, when a storm separated the two and Skyfire was lost.

Skyfire awakens and Megatron welcomes him to the Decepticon cause. Though Skyfire is grateful for having been thawed out, he shows doubts about being a warrior rather than a scientist. He commits to the cause out of loyalty to Starscream. When the Autobots arrive in the Arctic, Skyfire targets them for destruction.

Skyfire opens fire, scattering the Autobots. Spike tumbles through the ice into the arctic waters. Sparkplug pulls him out, but they are trapped on an ice floe. They cry out for help. Skyfire is intrigued by the new lifeforms and tries to befriend them, not realizing that they are terrified by Decepticons. Spike and Sparkplug try to explain that it’s the Decepticons that are the true monsters. The naïve Skyfire takes the humans to Megatron to prove the Decepticons' good intentions. Megatron and Starscream promptly imprison Spike and Sparkplug behind bars of ice, and plan their execution, leaving Skyfire troubled.

Optimus leads his Autobot team into the icy caverns, but a cave-in splits the team in two. Prime's group finds the humans and frees them, while the other team—including Ironhide, Ratchet, Hound and Gears—find the crystal shaft tap. Megatron discovers this second group and has his soldiers capture them. To test Skyfire's loyalty, Starscream orders Skyfire to execute the captives. Skyfire refuses, and in a fit of rage, Starscream blasts his old friend. Starscream then blasts the prisoners to pieces.

Well, not really. Once again, one of Hound's holograms has saved the day, creating the illusion of blasted Autobot parts. When Starscream departs, Hound drops the illusion. An ailing Skyfire awakens and is pleased to see the Autobots functioning. The disparate Autobot teams unite as Ratchet repairs the fallen titan. Laserbeak spies Ratchet's work and reports to Megatron. The Decepticon leader chews out Starscream for failing to kill the prisoners. Megatron orders his soldiers to attack.

As the battle progresses, Prime and Megatron each grab shards of crystals and engage in a duel. Skyfire appears on the battlefield, and Megatron orders him to attack Prime. Skyfire refuses, and proudly declares himself an Autobot, attacking Megatron and his Decepticons instead.

The battle takes to the air as Starscream and Skyfire engage in an aerial dogfight. A midair collision sends Skyfire out of control. In a last ditch effort, his blasts bury the crystal, but Skyfire crashes into the ice. The Autobots mourn Skyfire’s heroic sacrifice.

Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* When the Autobots roll out, the background is moving far too quickly, making the Autobots appear to be sliding across frame while transforming. It doesn't help that they aren't drawn very well, either.

* Right after he wakes up, Skyfire has a red Decepticon insignia in his chest in one shot, before they actually imprint the symbol on him.

* In the Rhino DVD version, Skyfire's Decepticon insignia is colored red in several shots.

* When Bumblebee tells Optimus that he can't find Ironhide and the others, the animation makes him look like he's flying. In the same scene, Optimus is shown with his trailer, though it wasn't there before, and it isn't there in the next shots.

* Megatron’s order to Skyfire to destroy Optimus Prime is voiced, oddly enough, by Optimus Prime.

* Just before Skyfire shoots the crystal, while Ratchet points in the air, Optimus Prime is colored blue in the backround.

Continuity errors
* As Optimus Prime muses about how the heat from the Earth's core is being drained away, Gears can be seen in the background sitting in front of a console with a very small screen. But during the closeup of Gears, the screen is much larger.

* Starscream transforms into an F-15 millions of years before his arrival on Earth, or the invention of jets.

* It's never adequately explained where Skyfire got an Autobot badge from.

* Were Starscream and Skyfire really friends? Starscream seems to shoot his old friend and call him "Traitor!" quite a lot. Then again, Starscream is a royal jerk.

*What exactly do green crystals have to do with the Earth's core?

*The Japanese ordering of this episode places it way after many episodes featuring Skyfire, when he's first introduced in this one.

Trivia
* Soundwave can transform his right forearm into a cylindrical electricity firing module capable of generating a million volts.

* Aside from astroseconds, Transformers also use astrominutes as units of time.

* In a rather odd shot set up, Skyfire is too big to fit into a cave that Megatron and Starscream stand in. He’s forced to peer through the cave’s opening.

* Prime’s Combat Deck cannons make a rare appearance in this episode, emerging from a non-transformed trailer.

* Megatron can rotate his lower torso 180 degrees, which makes for some cool hand-to-hand combat maneuvers.

* Spike and Sparkplug have fashionable fur-lined cold-weather hardhats with ear flaps.

* This episode was produced as the seventh in the season, though it aired after the eighth-produced episode, "S.O.S. Dinobots".

* The chapter stops for this episode on the Rhino DVD are Opening / Snowbot / At the Arctic Circle / "Destruction to Autobots" / An Illusion / Skyfire is Gone

*The Autobots can apparently drive from North America to the Arctic in a fairly short amount of time.

:Soundwave is a Decepticon in the Generation 1 continuity family. In the Japanese series, he later took the name Soundblaster.

Soundwave is one of Megatron's most reliable troops, and has positioned himself comfortably and irreplaceably in Megatron's upper command structure, and stands at the Decepticon leader's side as confidant. Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Though loyal to Megatron, the other Decepticons see him as a two-faced snake. As Communications Officer, Soundwave sees and hears all, and will not hesitate to use blackmail to keep himself high in Megatron's esteem. The other Decepticons wouldn't mind abandoning him on the battlefield -- if they thought Megatron would let them get away with it.

Soundwave commands a legion of cassette troops to carry out tasks big and small. Sometimes he lets them all out to watch impromptu gladiator games.

He also has all the personality of a stump (as evidenced in his computer-style speech).
Marvel Comics continuity
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

After the Transformers' awakening on Earth, Soundwave served quietly under Megatron, before he was overthrown by Shockwave. Under Shockwave's command, Soundwave attacked the Blackrock Aerospace Plant and secured it for Decepticon use. Warrior School! The plant's facilities were used to create the Constructicons, who built a massive radio dish that Soundwave used to beam a message back to Cybertron. The Next Best Thing to Being There! Soundwave assumed leadership of the Decepticons a short time later and led them against the Autobots during the "Dinobot Hunt," during a brief period when both Megatron and Shockwave were missing in action. Dinobot Hunt

When Megatron resurfaced, rendered immobile in a Wyoming coal mine due to lack of fuel, Soundwave sped to his rescue, re-energizing him. I, Robot Master! Using the splintered state of the Decepticon forces to his advantage, Soundwave worked both sides of the field, reporting to both Megatron and the returned Shockwave, without the other's knowledge. When Shockwave learned that the human Buster Witwicky had begun to suffer Matrix-induced visions of the next leap in Transformer evolution, Soundwave reported this to Megatron, prompting him to battle Shockwave for leadership. The Decepticons' human ally, Robot Master, televised the battle, much to Soundwave's distaste, and in order to prevent the Decepticons from looking like fools, interrupted the duel and insisted that they agree to a joint leadership. Second Generation!

When the Robot-Master hoax the Decepticons were perpetrating was threatened by the investigate work of Joy Meadows, Soundwave was instrumental in ending the conflict that ensued between the Decepticons and the Dinobots by holding the reporter hostage and destroying her footage. In the National Interest! Not long thereafter, when the deranged future Decepticon, Galvatron, traveled back in time, Soundwave was intrigued by the fact that he was unable to scan his mind to discern the truth of his identity. Siding with Megatron when conflict erupted, Soundwave and his leader were buried under an avalanche by Galvatron, and then rescued by the Autobots in the name of forming an alliance to defeat their common enemy. Target 2006

It would be some time before Soundwave came back to the fore, and his return to the spotlight was an ignominious one. With Megatron having apparently died, Soundwave was now once again under Shockwave's command, and, while patrolling on the Decepticon's mobile island base, found himself attacked and subdued by the time-travelling freelance peace-keeping agent, Death's Head, and tricked into giving up information on the whereabouts of Galvatron. Hunters! Although Death's Head's attempts to track down the Decepticon met with failure, Galvatron was ultimately entombed in lava, where he was later discovered by Susan Hoffman. Soundwave observed a televised broadcast of her discovery, and he and the Combaticons attempted to destroy Galvatron with explosives planted around the volcano in question. After a battle with the Throttlebots, Soundwave found that he was unable to remotely detonate the explosives planted around the volcano thanks to Blaster jamming his signal. Ladies' Night

When Shockwave was removed from power, Soundwave smoothly transitioned to serving under the new Decepticon leader Ratbat, and helped to operate his Realvision playback system to decode data from Autobot tapes Grandslam and Raindance. The Flames of Boltax! The tapes, it was discovered, contained information on the Underbase, the power of which was soon claimed by Starscream, who immediately targeted the Earth. Soundwave co-led the defense of New York alongside Fortress Maximus, but was deactivated by a blast of cosmic power from Starscream. Dark Star!

It would be some time before Soundwave was operational again, but was back on his feet by the time that Starscream, now a Pretender, was busy doubting his self-worth. Fallen Star He continued to operate under the command of the new Decepticon Earth commander, Scorponok.

In 2007, in the alternate future world of Earth-120185, Soundwave was second-in-command of the Decepticon forces under Shockwave, and succeeded him after Death's Head assassinated him on the orders of Unicron. The Legacy of Unicron! In 2008, Soundwave entered into an alliance with the Quintessons, arranging to attack the Autobots as part of a larger plan. He was, however, unaware of the aliens' true plans to take control of Cybertron, and found himself double-crossed when the Quintessons ambushed the Decepticons en route to their attack on the Autobots. The Autobots, led by Ultra Magnus, saved Soundwave's forces from the Quintessons, and they joind forces to repel the Quintesson invasion. Space Pirates! Finally, in 2009, Soundwave led the Terrorcons back in time to 1989, where they briefly participated in the "Time Wars," before returning to their own time in the midst of the conflict to save their own hides. Time Wars

Earthforce
In the tangent timeline that is home to the Autobot Earthforce team, Soundwave nominally served on Megatron's side during the Decepticon Civil War, but, once again, was not above exploiting the conflict for his own ends. When an energon shipment was hijacked by Shockwave's forces thanks to information he had given them, Megatron came to suspect the presence of a traitor in his ranks, but ironically assigned Soundwave to identify them. To keep his own duplicity a secret, he sets up Wildrider to take the fall, and Megatron destroys the Stunticon. Secrets

Approached by Starscream with a plan to make them both Decepticon leaders, Soundwave joined forces with the schemer and lured Megatron and Shockwave to an airport, tipping off the Autobots to their location. With the two leaders thus occupied, Soundwave and Starscream take control. Internal Affairs! Subsequently, Soundwave led an all-out attack on the Earthforce base as a diversion, while Starscream attempts to plunder an oil tanker. Starscream meets with failure, however, leading Soundwave to withdraw his forces, and wonder if he should not take leadership for himself alone. Divide and Conquer! Starscream is aware of Soundwave's goals, and when he is attacked by a group of alien assassins, suspects that he has ordered the hit and strikes back at him. Soundwave is able to convince him he is not responsible - in actuality, it was the work of Megatron and Soundwave. External Forces!

Learning that human reporter Irwin Spoon had secured an interview with the Autobots that could potentially resolve public view of the Transformer war. Seeking to prevent this, he has the Stunticons captured the journalist, and although the Autobots are able to rescue him, a carefully planted cerebro-shell ensures that the story Irwin writes is anything but accurate. End of the Road!

Animated continuity
The Transformers
:Voice Actor: Frank Welker (US), Issei Masamune (Japan)

Prior to his arrival on Earth, Soundwave had the questionably useful altmode of a space-age lamp-post. This allowed him to get as close to Autobot headquarters as the street leading into Iacon, but thankfully his chest-dwelling minion Laserbeak could snoop even closer. The loyal Laserbeak overheard talk of the Autobot mission to seek new energy sources off Cybertron, which prompted the fateful Decepticon interception mission that eventually landed both teams on Earth.

Immediately after the Transformers awakened on Earth in 1984, Soundwave played an essential role in the generation of energon cubes and the formation of plans for a new space cruiser to return the Decepticons to Cybertron. He sounded really cool when he talked about these, too. Soundwave was reformatted as a portable cassette player, which allowed him to dupe a grabby and none-too-questioning Spike Witwicky into carrying his shrunken form into the Ark headquarters. This was to happen many times to the seemingly tape-deck addicted citizens of Earth.

Later, he used his mind-reading talents to acquire an antimatter formula for the Decepticons from the brain of Chip Chase. One of Soundwave's most notable misadventures came in in 1985, when, operating a plan conceived by Starscream, he brainwashed humans with ultrasonic vibrations inside the Decepticon-built night club Dancitron in New York City, leading to a confrontation with his Autobot Communications Officer counterpart, Blaster, beginning a lasting rivalry between the two.

Soundwave rarely displayed much emotion, and only infrequently exhibited any cunning and self-serving traits. He came across as extremely loyal to Megatron, even going so far as to recover the mortally wounded leader after being left for dead at the Battle of Autobot City in 2005. But while Soundwave was loyal, he was far from stupid, and kept his mouth shut when Megatron was subsequently ejected into space, and although he did suggest himself as a replacement leader, he again loyally served Megatron when he returned as Galvatron.

In the year 2006, although operating in a less prominent capacity for most of the time, Soundwave played a prominent role in Galvatron's attempt to learn the secret of a sonic weapon on the planet Eurhythma, where sound and music were the way of life, leaving Soundwave entranced by the planet's perfect melodies. Recording each piece of the harmony that formed the devastating sonic effect, Soundwave was defeated when the Eurhythmans countered the harmony with white noise, and was again pulled into a confrontation with Blaster, who erased his recordings.

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformer manga
While Megatron and the Decepticons engaged the Autobots in battle in Arizona, Soundwave and his cassettes were dispatched to do something unspecified but likely evil in Tokyo. Optimus Prime dispatched a unit of Autobots, lead by Bumblebee and Kenji to trakc them down. He was ultimately defeated when Bumblebee got the drop on him with his patented "Bumble-Kick" and shattered his chest, making it impossible for his cassette forces to return to him, leaving them to be captured as well.

The manga maintained something resembling continuity: during his appearance in the third issue of the book, Soundwave was shown to have bandages over his chest. Adorable.

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformer story pages
In the second "Anime Theater" story page, titled Sick em, Hound!, the Autobots decided to keep themselves in shape by having a friendly race. Soundwave learned of the race and set up a trap within a narrow canyon. He walled the Autobots up within the canyon and began shooting them all. Luckily, Hound arrived on the scene and delivered a powerful punch to his chest, shattering his tape door. Soundwave immediately fled.

Headmasters
Shortly after the arrival of the Headmasters, Soundwave and Blaster engaged in their final clash in the Arctic circle as the Autobots and Decepticons were in the process of searching for the missing Autobot Matrix of Leadership. The two opponents inflicted fatal damage on each other, and Soundwave's body exploded even as Blaster collapsed, but his fragments were recovered by his cassettes. Using reconstructive technology from the planet Master, the leader of the Decepticon Headmasters, Scorponok successfully rebuilt and resurrected Soundwave as Soundblaster - essentially identical to his former self, except for his predominantly black color scheme. As Soundblaster, Soundwave served the same role as he had previously under the leadership of Galvatron and later Scorponok, frequently embarking on spying missions with Ratbat.

Headmasters manga
After the Decepticons had been vanquished from Earth, Mega Zarak ordered Soundblaster to remain on Earth in secret to act as a spy for the Decepticons. Soundblaster made his presence and intentions known almost instantly (not a very good spy) by kicking Wheelie square in the face and taking the Witwicky family hostage. Strangely enough, the Autobots considered these acts to be hostile. Chromedome was left powerless to do anything but surrender, as Slugfest and Overkill brutalized Spike and threatened Carly. Daniel finally snapped and beat the living crap out of the two Cassette dinosaurs, leaving Soundblaster open to Chromedome's poorly named "Master-Chrome Hurricane Throw to the End of Hell!" Chromedome chucked Soundblaster over the horizon where he landed near the rogue Decepticon, Sixshot.

In When Continents Collide, Megatron calls Soundwave a "blundering tape-filled idiot." This is notable because it is hilarious. Also, Soundwave is really, really whiny in these stories.

Beast Wars
Soundwave is shown among the many Transformers strewn about the interior of the Ark when the Predacon Megatron infiltrates the ship on his mission to destroy Optimus Prime.

In the 3H Tales of the Beast Wars comics, Soundwave is one of the ancient warriors who appears from J'nwan to help battle the warlord Shokaract.
Dreamwave Generation 1 continuity
Soundwave was among the Decepticons who quickly joined Shockwave's forces upon returning to Cybertron. It seems clear, however, that Soundwave had little loyalty to him, as he readily joins up with Starscream when the Seeker decides to return to Earth and take over. Though Soundwave feigned subservience to Starscream, it is later revealed that he had been serving Megatron the entire time in secret.
Several stellar spans ago, Megatron assigned Bludgeon to delve into Shockwave's research and relay all the information back to him. As the Decepticon leader did not fully trust Bludgeon, he also assigned Soundwave to spy on him. Soundwave followed Bludgeon and his team as they left for Earth in 1984 and established a base within Mt. St. Helens, eventually discovering that they intended to resurrect Thunderwing. Though he tried to stop them, Iguanus used an experimental cannon from Shockwave's arsenal to lock him in his alt mode while they instigated a volcanic eruption. He was eventually recovered by a team of unwitting humans who sold him to a pawn shop. He remains sitting in the window to this day.
Toys
Generation 1
*Soundwave (Decepticon, 1984/1985, 2003)
: Japanese ID number: 17, TFC-10

: Soundwave transforms into a realistically-sized microcassette recorder of indeterminate manufacture, and includes weapons that turn into imitation batteries to power his nonexistent circuitry. Takara's release of Soundwave in the Transformers line was nearly identical to the Microchange "MC-10 Cassette Man" toy on which he was based. This meant that along with being packaged with Rumble (previously a red "MC-01 Micross"), he came with a set of non-functioning headphones that allowed you to not listen to the silence not recorded on his non-functioning tapes with the non-functioning microphone. Hasbro packaged Soundwave with Buzzsaw rather than Rumble, and omitted the other non-functioning accessories.

: Soundwave was included in the VS-Y versus pack along with Rumble and Grimlock.

: For 2003, Soundwave was reissued as part of Takara's Transformers Collection "book-box" series. This iteration of Soundwave came packaged with Laserbeak.

*Soundblaster (Decepticon, 1987, 2005)
: Japanese ID number: D-101, TFC-18

: As part of the Japanese Headmasters series, Soundwave was redecoed and retooled so that he could hold two Cassettes in his chest at once. Soundblaster's tape door was cast in transparent red plastic to allow the information on the "readout" decal, unique to the Headmasters decos of the cassettes, to be seen, functioning in the same manner as the Tech Specs decoders. The readouts of the Decepticon cassettes showed the "weak points" of Fortress Maximus. Soundblaster came packaged with Buzzsaw.

: Soundblaster saw reissue in the Transformers Collection series in 2005, packaged together with Buzzsaw and Ravage.

*Soundwave with Wingthing (Action Master, 1990)

: Action Master Soundwave is a non-transforming action figure who combines elements of his cartoon model and original toy. He is compatible with any other Action Master weapon or vehicle. He came packaged with his new partner Wingthing.

Generation 2
*Soundwave (Go-Bot, 1995)
: A redeco of the Go-Bot Gearhead, Soundwave transforms into a Ford Thunderbird stock car with precision wheels and wire axles, compatible with "Hot Wheels" and "Matchbox" playsets and tracks (which he was properly sized to fit).

: Notably, his color scheme is very loud, being bright shades of fluorescent yellow, pink and blue. This is one time fans can actually get away with describing a toy's color scheme as neon.

Machine Wars
*Soundwave (Mega, 1997)
: Machine Wars Soundwave was a redeco of the Predator Stalker minus Stalker's handgun and with the sighting gimmick having been removed from the missile. In this incarnation Soundwave transforms into tracked missile carrier.

Smallest Transformers
*Soundwave and Ravage (2003)
: Like all of the Smallest Transformers, this version of Soundwave is a tiny replica of his G1 form. He came with Smallest Transformers Ravage, who is probably the smallest Transformer ever.

Universe
*Soundwave & Space Case (Ultra, 2004)
: The Machine Wars version of Soundwave was redecoed for release in the Universe line in an Ultra-level two-pack with Space Case. Due to the lack of fiction, it is possible that this incarnation is in fact an alternate-universe version of Soundwave, or possibly a new character altogether.

Titanium
*Soundwave
: A new representation of his G1 form, a 6" Soundwave with Laserbeak was shown in Hasbro's booth at SDCC 2006.

Classics (2006)
*Soundwave (Commemorative Edition, 2007)

: Despite having packaging that claims Classics Soundwave is "Identical to the original toy", this version is actually a redeco of the Transformers Collection Soundblaster reissue in Soundwave's original colors. Like the Soundblaster reissue, Classics Soundwave is packaged with "Battle" Ravage, as well as Laserbeak, recolored from Soundblaster's Buzzsaw. Exclusive to Toys 'R' Us stores, Soundwave had been intended for the Commemorative Series, but after the cancellation of that line he was added to Classics, although the phrase "Commemorative Edition" is prominently displayed on the front and sides of the box.

:(It is interesting to note that while the actual product uses the Soundblaster mold, the package photos show Soundwave with the single-tape door mold used for Takara's TFC-10 reissue.)

Attacktix
*Soundwave (Booster, 2007)

Unreleased
:In Generation 2, a redeco of the Laser Cycle Road Pig was planned as Soundwave, but ultimately never released, one of many planned redecos that never made it. Some packaged samples do exist.

Merchandise
Trivia
* Including the Microchange "Cassette Man" version, the original Soundwave mold has sported at least four different tape doors:
** The original MC-10 version had a cassette door that had "Cassette Man" emblazoned on it, and featured a hinge that was internal to the robot's body.
** For the initial Transformers release by Hasbro, the "Cassette Man" text was removed.
** When Takara's Soundwave was released, the hinge was remolded so the bottom of the door attached to the outside of the robot, on either side of the "buttons", which had also been remolded.
** The Soundblaster version had a door that retained the external hinge and added the capacity for holding a second cassette.

* Though Soundwave's toy is a microcassette recorder, his fictional appearances depict him as a stereo cassette deck or Walkman. (Likewise, his microcassette tapes are depicted as regular audio cassettes.)

* Animation from early Transformers commercials featured a Soundwave model colored in very light blue, versus the dark blue used later. Also, instead of the cassettes ejecting themselves from his chest, he reached into his chest compartment with his own fingers and threw the (tiny) tapes into the air.

* The Marvel US comics chose a purple scheme for Soundwave. This could have been an error, an early look for him that was dropped in other media, or perhaps an attempt to distinguish him from the other Decepticons, who were mostly blue (especially since blacks also ended up as blues in the industry's then-limited color palette). The Marvel UK comics colored him blue like everywhere else.

* Soundwave's computer model was used for one of the generic transformers in Beast Machines seen in Nightscream's flashback being cornered by Vehicon drones just before Nightscream fled into the lower levels of Cybertron. Though the model was recolored, it was still really <span title="This may not be an actual word" style="cursor:help;">'Soundwavey,'</span> causing much confusion among fans.

* Later, Soundwave's character model showed up numerous times in various color schemes as a generic background character in Armada.

* Sideways listened to music using a tape deck resembling Soundwave in the Cybertron cartoon. Later, after a new Planet X was found, Cybertron Soundwave held tape deck Soundwave in his arms.

:Kup is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Kup is a tough old coot. He's almost as old as rust, in fact, and he was plinking Decepticons with acid bursts from his trusty musket laser long before most of you turbo-revvin' young punks were born. In his day, lasers didn't need to use light; they did whatever they were told to do and liked it.

He's probably had a thousand adventures, has Kup, and he'll be glad to relate a story of any one of them at any time to a willing audience. The Dinobots love Kup's war stories, and don't seem to mind when he inadvertently leaves a piece out or changes the story between retellings. Old memory chips'll do that to you. Other Autobots can be less patient, and Kup finds this disrespectful and irritating. If there's one thing Kup dislikes it's when young punks don't respect their elders. If they'd only listen they might learn something. Hot Rod is one of the worst offenders in this way, but he's a good ladbot and Kup will straighten him out sooner or later, even if it takes a tank of Sharkticons.

Occasionally, Kup's vast experience gets in his way. When a situation doesn't remind him of anything, he has trouble figuring out what to do. This doesn't happen very much.

Known aliases in this continuity: Teaspoon

Though it is not yet established when Kup joined the Earth-bound Autobots, he was stationed at Autobot City during the 2005 invasion by the Decepticons. He was supervising construction efforts undertaken by Huffer and other workers when this work was interrupted by an impetuous drive-through by Hot Rod. Kup was determined to straighten out the adventure-seeking youth.

After the Decepticons began their attack, Kup and Hot Rod were trapped outside of Autobot City's fortress-like defenses. Thanks to an attempted hull breach by the Insecticons, Kup and Hot Rod entered a small gap in one of Autobot City's heavy blast doors -- in the process, Kup crunched Kickback's skull by running over it.
Inside the city, Kup and Hot Rod joined Arcee and Springer in rigging an explosives launcher into place to help defend against the might of Devastator. With the arrival of Optimus Prime the next day, the tide of battle was turned and the Decepticons were defeated -- but at a terrible price.

Following the events of the movie, Kup served as an advisor to the newly-minted Rodimus Prime.

Years later on the planet Nebulos, Kup encountered the Nebulan resistance against The Hive. Using Targetmaster technology stolen from the Decepticons, Kup was partnered with the Nebulan Recoil, who apparently then chewed his ear off about their leader, Optimus Prime.
Generation 1
:(Note: Events in italics occurred only in the Marvel UK books.)

Several hundred years ago, Kup became afflicted with combat fatigue, a loss of nerves and will brought on by too many millions of years of non-stop fighting. Considering himself a liability to the Autobot cause, Kup went into "retirement" -- wandering space alone in his starship, waiting for the end to eventually take him. He was shaken out of his misery when he crossed paths with a pair of Tyroxian fighters attempted to destroy a lone spacecraft. Spurred into action, Kup disabled the pursuers and brought the hunted pilot on-board, surprisingly finding him to be a fellow Autobot, Hot Rod. Hot Rod was thrilled to have found aid, and eagerly tried to recruit Kup into helping him return to Tyroxia and save his comrade Blurr, but Kup wasn't interested in getting involved any further, and only agreed to take Hot Rod back to Cybertron. The young punk reprogrammed the ship's navigation computers, though, and landed on Tyroxia to rescue Blurr by himself. Kup was finally shaken out of his funk when he realized that Hot Rod represented everything he used to be, and single-handedly saved Hot Rod and Blurr from their Tyroxian tormentors. His fighting spirit restored, Kup returned to Cybertron with the two Autobots, and joined Fortress Maximus' troop alongside his new allies.

When Fortress Maximus became disheartened by the neverending cycle of violence on Cybertron, he made plans to escape the war and set up a new life on the planet Nebulos. Kup and many of his top warriors chose to follow their leader to this new world, aboard the starship Steelhaven. Tragically, a series of incidents and misunderstandings brought the Autobots and Nebulans to the brink of war within days of their arrival. Kup was all for forcibly teaching the Nebulans some manners, but Fortress Maximus forbade it. In a desperate attempt to show their true intentions, Fort Max, Kup and several others disarmed themselves in front of the Nebulan gates. Furthermore, Fortress Maximus and four of his lieutenants beheaded themselves and agreed to leave their lifeless heads and bodies, as well as their various weapons, in Nebulan custody so that serious peace talks could be conducted. Kup took over command of the Autobot wilderness camp in Fortress Maximus' absence.

Matters quickly deteriorated after the arrival of the Decepticons, and two factions of Nebulans joined with both Autobots and Decepticons through bio-mechanical engineering to become Headmasters. Events turned against the Autobots, as Lord Zarak, the Nebulan politician binary-bonded to Decepticon leader Scorponok, was able to sway public opinion in favor of the Decepticons, labelling the Autobots as renegades and taking their Headmasters prisoner. Some Nebulans remained loyal to Fortress Maximus' partner, Galen, and travelled to the Autobot camp to forge an alliance. Making use of a new form of bio-mechanical engineering, Kup and the other weaponless Autobots were teamed with Nebulan Targetmasters to replace their lost guns. Kup personally was teamed with Recoil. As the conflict continued, though, both camps of Nebulans began to realize the devastation they were causing to their homeworld, and decided to quit Nebulos and travel to Earth in search of other Transformers. The crew of Steelhaven soon found themselves linked with the Ark's Autobots, and under the overall command of Optimus Prime.
Generation 2
Dreamwave comics continuity
During the Cybertronian War's earlier years, a young Kup served alongside Ironhide and Wheeljack under the command of Grimlock. He appeared to be the only one who would speak up against Grimlock. When Optimus Prime and Megatron disappeared in a prototype Space Bridge Accident, Kup followed his unit to the Lightning Strike Coalition offshoot of the Autobot faction.
Along with Arcee, Blaster, Hot Rod and Wheelie, Kup was part of a resistance group during Shockwave's control of Cybertron.
Kup stopped a feisty Wheelie from annoying Teletraan 15. When 15 thanked him, he gave her a big old spine-cracking hug.

IDW comics continuity
Kup is extremely old. In years past, he's trained dozens of Autobots, including Prowl, Springer, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Hot Rod, and even Optimus Prime.

At some point, he and Outback crash-landed on a mysterious planet covered with radioactive crystals. Over time, Kup was slowly driven insane from the radiation; he talked to the dead corpse of Outback as though he were still alive (and used his disembodied arm as a club) and believed that zombies were attacking him when he shut down for the night. In reality, these zombies were fellow Autobots sent to rescue him, and Kup killed several of them before Springer managed to get a specialist in to extract the aging Autobot. Unfortunately, due to the damage Kup sustained from the radiation, his incompatibility with modern Transformers tech due to his age and stubborn unwillingness to upgrade, and a near-meltdown of his spark, he was placed on life support upon arriving aboard Ark-17, and it is unknown if he will recover - physically or mentally. Spotlight: Kup
