The largest subterranean lifeform native to Cybertron, Drillers are not to be taken lightly. Enormous multi-tentacled beasts capable of burrowing through the ground or through buildings with ease, they are capable of great destruction and carnage on any scale.
They are semi-sentient at best and can only obey simple commands. They also develop intense loyalty to their masters. Naturally, all these qualities have endeared them to Shockwave who keeps one as a pet and personal transport.

They are beasts of burden, mainly used for mining jobs. However, the one owned by Shockwave is bred specifically for militaristic use and is considerably larger than a typical member of its species.

A Driller, this one partially re-engineered to serve as Shockwave's chariot and warhound, was summoned alongside its master, to attack Optimus Prime when NEST was called to Chernobyl by Alexi Voskhod. This was only misdirection, to ensure that the Autobots did not realize that the Decepticons actually wanted them to find the fuel cell from the Ark located within the facility. After Optimus retrieved the fuel cell from the Driller, Shockwave emerged from it to reveal himself to Optimus, and the pair quickly retreated underground. The experience left Optimus somewhat shaken, and angry with the humans that they had concealed the Ark from the Autobots.

Later on, the Driller was present in Chicago during the Decepticon invasion, proving to be a deadly threat from below, separating Optimus from his trailer and the flight tech it possessed.

It crawled its way in and through a toppling skyscraper by Shockwave's command to flush out Sam Witwicky and his allies, and caused the building to snap in half, the top section slamming onto another building. When the Driller went in to finish the humans, Optimus, with the jet pack and upgraded weapons from his trailer, attacked it in midair. The Driller's reach with its tentacles was hindered by the building as it attempted to fight back, and Optimus counterattacked it by slamming his entire body through its neck, killing it. Its partially severed body crashed to the street below. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)
Years before the war began, when Sentinel Prime's Autobots revitalized Cybertron by re-energizing the AllSpark, a Driller was drawn to the surface by the fresh energy flowing through the planet. At the outskirts of Thetacon, it attacked some Hatchlings and their protector Starscream. Megatron and Shockwave saved them from the creature, forcing it into retreat, but the beast had left an impression upon Shockwave, who deemed it "magnificent". Foundation issue 2
At some point before or during the war, Shockwave captured and tamed a Driller—whether it was the same creature he had fought beforehand or another member of its species is unknown—and brought it to Earth with him, where Astrotrain built a cage for it. Rising Storm issue 3 When its master was about to get killed by Optimus Prime, the Driller made it to Philadelphia and saved him. The Driller was frozen along with his master, Shockwave, in a former Soviet military base. As Optimus Prime tried to keep Shockwave frozen until reinforcements arrived, the Driller came online and attacked the Autobot leader only to have his tentacles blasted by rockets, this caused it to retreat.
Optimus Primal, Megatron, and Grimlock join forces to combat the forces of Unicron and long-winded speeches!
Act 1: Grimlock finds himself transported away from ancient Cybertron to a mysterious location. He soon finds himself engaged in first verbal and then physical sparring with Armada Megatron, who has likewise been teleported to this mysterious location. Their battle is interrupted by the arrival of Optimus Primal, who bores them both with talk of alternate dimensions and of Unicron's ultimate plans, and explains that they are within Unicron himself. As they gaze into a deep pit and Primal continues to exposit, the floor drops out from beneath them, and they plunge into the belly of the beast...

Act 2: The trio find themselves in a steaming cauldron, and head for a small island in the distance. They are greeted by Reptilion and Striker, who inform them that all who enter are destined to fight and die, their sparks consumed by Unicron. Megatron and Grimlock attack, leaving Primal free to press onwards. As soon as he's out of sight, they take their exits as well.

Act 3: Primal sneaks into the arena, where numerous Transformers are held captive. As he watches, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker are brought out and forced to do battle. Primal prepares to attack, but is discovered by Striker. The Dinobot is about to blast Primal when Grimlock and Megatron (who were unable to find their way out) bash him from behind. Reptilion attacks as well, but is knocked out by their combined strength. But more Generals attack, the combat in the arena begins, Glen starts looking at his watch... to be continued!
Notes
*The cast:
** Gregg Berger: Generation 1 Grimlock
** David Kaye: Unicron Trilogy Megatron
** Garry Chalk: Optimus Primal
** Brian Orms: Striker
** Daniel Ross: Reptilion
*Music and sound effects were done by Vince DiCola
*Mentioned characters include: Leader-1 and Primus.
* This live-action script reading took place Saturday night at OTFCC 2003. Neither script nor program guide give it a formal title; thus the name comes from the footer of the original script.
* Striker and Reptilion were portrayed by OTFCC attendees who won a voice acting competition earlier in the day.
* Like the previous live-action performance, the story is extremely tongue-in-cheek. The characters glare at Vince when he starts playing the Imperial March, say hi to writer Simon Furman, and doze off while Primal gives one of his grand speeches.
* Silliness aside, the story leads directly into the second issue of the Universe comic, showing how Grimlock and Megatron met Primal, how Striker was knocked out, and setting up Sideswipe and Sunstreaker's arena fight.

Transformers references
*Grimlock, when arriving inside Unicron, wonders if "this war....within!" jokingly referring to his series of origin.
*Grimlock calls Unicron "the scriptwriter's friend," a self deprecating joke by Furman on his tendency to use him as the ultimate villain.
*Optimus Primal notes how despite the changes in body, Megatron's voice always seems to stay the same, in reference to David Kaye playing both Armada Megatron and Primal's Megatron.
*Grimlock tells Primal to forget his Tech Specs.

Real-world references
*As mentioned above, when Grimlock and Megatron duel each other with their swords, the Imperial March from Star Wars begins to play.
*Megatron refers to the insides of Unicron as being "Late Inferno (Dante)". Later, Striker and Reptilion quote directly from the epic poem.
