Story
Team Prime lives on Earth as a pre-emptive measure against the return of the Decepticons. Autobot Central Command is located in a converted missile silo in Nevada which was provided by the United States government, with whom the Autobots have formed an alliance. However, the presence of Transformers on Earth is not generally known among the civilian population. The Autobots have taken three human teens under their protection after their association with the Autobots put them in danger from the Decepticons.

Megatron returns having discovered Dark Energon, which grants him rule of life itself, but is injured, with Starscream taking command in his absence. In addition to the Decepticons, the Autobots also contend with the human terrorist organization, MECH.

After the live-action film series, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman signed to become show runners with Jeff Kline and Duane Capizzi of The Hub's Transformers cartoon, explaining the TV show would not have the constraints of a two-hour film in delving into the mythology. (Orci's employees Steven Puri and Mandy Safavi were also credited as producers.) The show runners were given the "Binder of Revelation", a near 400-page production bible that Hasbro had been working on since the movies, that combined elements of the most popular continuities. The show's title was based on the desire to create a master continuity and a literal Prime continuity. Whereas the movies were about a boy and his car, the dynamic between the kids and the robots on the show was meant to be more like The Iron Giant.

The writing staff was headed by Capizzi, with Marsha Griffin as the story editor. The staff consists of Nicole Dubuc, Joseph Kuhr and Steven Melching. Kline said they wanted the show to be very cinematic, with tension, suspense and danger (as marked by Cliffjumper's death in the pilot) as children are more media savvy than they were in the past. Regardless, they had to be considerate as the show still had a broad audience. As part of the aligned continuity family with War for Cybertron and Exodus, the producers strove to maintain many of the common elements (eg. Optimus and Megatron's past friendship, Dark Energon's origins as Unicron's blood, Bumblebee sharing his film counterpart's backstory), but were allowed contradictions if it served the storytelling. By using the mammoth story bible, the writers could plan events years in advance. The large number of episodes per season meant they could pace and establish characters during season 1 slowly, while saving the more momentous, less stand alone episodes that delved into the backstory for season 2. Some of the plot ideas (namely the zombie robots) were based on stories they came up with when playing with the toys as kids. Bob Skir has written some episodes.

Designers include Christophe Vacher (colors), Vince Toyama and Jevon Bue (backgrounds) and Jose Lopez (lead character designer). Vacher wanted to do something different from traditional animation and saw something edgy about Prime. According to Ken Christiansen, the show's characters were formed by Hasbro Studios hiring freelance conceptual artists like himself. The submitted artwork was given Lopez's staff to be examined, and they incorporated the ideas they liked best. Other concept artists include Augusto Barranco and Walter Gatus.

Supervising director Dave Hartman headed a team including Todd Waterman, Shaunt Nigoghossian, Vinton Heuck and Kirk Van Wormer. Polygon Pictures provided the CG animation, for which Digitalscape performed a recruitment drive for before the show began production. Lopez said the animation would be a "groundbreaking mix of 2D animation and CGI". Each character has three CG models: the robot mode, their alternate mode, and one for the transformation. Lopez said the designs were personality driven, and that the 3D animation allowed them to go "crazy" with the transformation schemes. Five episodes are animated at a time (hence the monthly gaps during the first season).

The staff had three years of story planned, but while writing it became clear that the escalating storylines made it impossible to maintain self-contained episodes and they burned through those planned three years within the second season. The idea of incorporating Beasts into the third season was a late idea.
Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Prime (超ロボット生命体 トランスフォーマー プライム Chō Robot Seimeitai Transformers Prime) began airing in Japan on TV Tokyo affiliate TV Aichi, beginning April 7, 2012, with an 8am Saturday morning timeslot (the same channel and timeslot as the previous two Transformers cartoons to air in Japan). It ended its 52 episode run on March 30, 2013.

To reflect Takara's unique marketing strategy for the toyline—the prominent gimmick of the non-show Arms Microns—the series included CGI-animated cartoon shorts starring those little robots, called "Arms Micron Theater", at the end of every episode. The shorts centered around the Arms Microns maintaining an undercover presence amongst the Autobots, who are not even aware that their weapons are alive.
Another additional segment titled "From the Cybertron Satellite, Transformers Division", hosted by the popular J-pop idol group, Tokyo Girls' Style, was also tacked onto each episode. These segments featured the idol girls interacting with Vector Sigma in order to relay important facts about the Transformers franchise to the audience.

Due to the longer title sequence and end credits, as well as the two additional bonus segments, each episode had approximately three minutes of content removed for time constraints. Many of these edits were to reduce environment pans or establishing shots. However, as the show was reworked to appeal to a younger audience (as all Western Transformers cartoons are when localized for Japan), the violence during the fight sequences was edited for content.

Like all Japanese dubs of Western Transformers cartoons, transformation commands were added, such as shouting "Transform!" Additionally, whenever a character popped their weapon out of their hands/arms, they screamed "Arms Up!" Text was overlayed on the screen whenever a character first appeared in each episode, providing their name and function. In addition, promotional text for various Transformers-specific campaigns from TakaraTomy scrolled by over the episode as things were happening, which could be kind of... distracting.

Like the dubs of Beast Wars, Beast Wars Metals, Beast Wars Returns and Animated, the localization of Prime was headed up by Yoshikazu Iwanami. As is his way, Yoshikazu had the humor ratcheted up considerably. Self-aware, Fourth Wall-breaking jokes were added. An example occurs as early as the end of "Darkness Rising, Part 2", when the manipulator arm turns into a spider-like creature and starts crawling around. In the dub, Ratchet thinks he hears the audience telling him to watch his back, but brushes their concerns off as unimportant.

Characters were also fundamentally altered to be more humorously quirky. Airachnid, for example, was changed into something of a female Pepe Le Pew; boy-crazy and single-mindedly amorous in her pursuit of Jack. As with Yoshikazu's previous efforts, adlibbing was utilized extensively to soften tension and suspense; the characters talk a lot.

On August 12, 2012, TV Tokyo aired the "Transformers Prime Perfect Transformation Late Night 2-Hour Special" hosted by Chisato Mori, Nozomi Furuki and Yūki Tai. The special featured a recap of "Darkness Rising, Part 1" thru "Rock Bottom", brand new "From the Cybertron Satellite, Transformers Division" and "Arms Micron Theater" segments, various cast interviews and commentary, and a special comparison between the original English language version of "Predatory" and the radically different Japanese language version.

The Japanese version of Prime only ran for 52 episodes (the first two seasons of the original English language version). "Darkest Hour" was edited and reworked to function as a series finale. This mainly involved rescripting the ending and cutting the cliffhanger so as to give the show a more positive, "happy" send off. The Beast Hunters era of the Prime franchise was rebranded by TakaraTomy as a new franchise, Triple Combination: Transformers Go!. While the Beast Hunters toys are being marketed and sold in Japan, it is currently unknown how the remaining 13 episodes of the cartoon will be released in their country.
Of the Deployers who stand with Soundwave, Laserbeak may say the least, but he quickly distinguishes himself, as his powerful laser attacks can pin down an Autobot attack force... when it isn't cutting them to shreds.

Fiction
Exodus novel
Megatron despised Soundwave's minions, including Laserbeak. Regardless, Soundwave found Laserbeak more valuable than Rumble and Frenzy, and when Soundwave did some intense thinking, his Minicons inside got restless. Transformers: Exodus

Prime cartoon
When Soundwave intercepted a message from Agent Fowler, Soundwave released Laserbeak (which was resting on his chest) to bring Fowler to the Nemesis. After chasing Fowler's helicopter, the drone grabbed Fowler with his tentacles and returned to the Decepticon ship. Darkness Rising, Part 3

After Soundwave picked up a possible signal from Megatron, who was previously assumed dead, Starscream went to investigate. Untrusting of Starscream, Soundwave decided to keep an eye on him by sending Laserbeak after him. After finding Megatron, Starscream intended to allow Megatron to perish, but was forced to reconsider when he discovered Soundwave's Minicon watching him. Masters & Students

While proving a point to Airachnid, Soundwave unleashed Laserbeak, who zoomed around the Nemesis bridge and shot her a couple of times before reuniting with his master. One Shall Rise, Part 3

Laserbeak was dispatched to keep the Jackhammer busy while Soundwave went after an Iacon relic. Wheeljack managed to shoot the drone down, and Ratchet hit on the plan of uploading a virus into the disabled Laserbeak to allow the Autobots to gain the Iacon database. He and Raf managed to do so, planting an additional grenade as a decoy. When Soundwave retrieved Laserbeak and returned to the Nemesis, the Decepticons found the grenade but not the virus, which passed into the ship's computer and began downloading the database. Triage

Once the Decepticons obtained information pointing to Jasper, Nevada as the home of the Autobots' human friends, Laserbeak was put to work searching the area. This bore fruit when he located Smokescreen, who happened to be the last of the Iacon relics. He kept Smokescreen busy until Soundwave arrived to capture the Autobot. Hard Knocks

Laserbeak was dispatched to monitor the battle after the Decepticons tracked Jack Darby's location. He was caught in the explosion when Arcee and Jack blew up a gas station to take out the two pursuing Vehicons, and Soundwave was unable to salvage any surveillance data from him. Darkmount, NV

During a battle in Texas, Laserbeak detached from Soundwave and was able to successfully short-out Optimus Prime's shiny new jetpack, causing the Autobot leader to crash in an undignified heap. Project Predacon Laserbeak's second attempt at downing Optimus didn't go so well, with the Autobot leader punching him out of the air. He was unable to locate Soundwave after his master was captured, but Shockwave had him track Fowler to the Autobots' shielded base and reactivate Soundwave with new orders—capture Ratchet. Minus One

During his rescue of Soundwave, Laserbeak's transponder was shot off by Smokescreen, and the Autobots later used it to build an aerial drone. Persuasion
When the captive Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Sideswipe were brought before Soundwave in the Kaon Prison, Laserbeak swooped down and perched on his master's arm. It soon turned out, however, that Prime's team had allowed themselves to be captured so they could rescue Zeta Prime, and as they escaped and made their way through the prison, Laserbeak could be spotted lurking in the shadows, watching their progress, at three different locations. By the time Prime's group made it to Soundwave's laboratory, where Zeta Prime was being held Laserbeak had reunited with his master, and joined Soundwave in battling the Autobots. Laserbeak served as Soundwave's last line of defense in the clash, ejecting from his chest and screeching across the lab at high speeds, blasting laser bursts onto the Autobots below. He was eventually downed, however, and accompanied Soundwave in a hasty retreat, but not before Soundwave fatally wounded Zeta Prime. Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
Laserbeak was at Soundwave's side during the assault on Autobot City that nearly destroyed the Ark. In a surprising lack of judgement, he flew past a rampaging Optimus Prime, leading the Autobot leader to where Soundwave was disguised as a light fixture. Luckily for both Decepticons, they were in such a place Optimus was unable to get a clear shot and managed to retreat.

Laserbeak was with Soundwave when the Combaticons and Starscream brought Optimus in as their prisoner. He also somehow missed the massive city-sized Autobot who snuck up on the Decepticons and proceeded to beat Megatron to death. He wisely fled with the remaining Decepticons.

Laserbeak was instrumental in reviving Megatron in Soundwave's laboratory in Kaon, recovering the Techvolt used to bring the Decepticon leader back to life. This earned him an affectionate scratch on the head from the notoriously unemotional Communications Officer. When Megatron tried to do the same, the irate Minicon nipped at him, amusing the warlord.

During the assault on the Autobot defenses keeping Trypticon prisoner, Laserbeak was with Soundwave throughout the battle. He was next seen aboard the Nemesis, Trypticon's new form. He joined Soundwave and Rumble in boarding the Ark as it fled towards a Space Bridge, successfully fending off the Autobots and destroying their anti-air cannons. This allowed the Decepticons to send in Bruticus. He wasn't seen after, though presumably he was sucked into the collapsing Space Bridge along with everyone else.

Blast Off is a Decepticon. He is a bit of a speed demon, and a bit reckless about it. Along with the other Combaticons, he can form Bruticus.

Fiction
Rage of the Dinobots
During the final days of the evacuation of Cybertron, Blast Off led a Decepticon team in an attack on the ground troops supporting the Autobot evacuation ships. It might have gone well if these troops hadn't included the Dinobots, but they did and thus Blast Off ended up with Grimlock's sword through his chest. Rage of the Dinobots issue 1
Keith Silverstein (English)

When the Autobots came into possession of a large amount of energon, Starscream tasked the Combaticons with diverting the transport by destroying a bridge. Vortex and Blast Off were sent to clear a short cut to allow Brawl to take a drop ship through. Blast Off went through first, drawing out Autobot mines for Vortex to destroy. Once they got through the ruins, the Autobots closed some huge shutters, so Blast Off went ahead, leaving Vortex behind to fight all the Autobots by himself. Once the bridge was down and Swindle brought the transport to a halt, the Combaticons combined into Bruticus and smashed through the rest of its defenses. Unfortunately the damage they did resulted in the transport crashing. Starscream was not very pleased at all and had them all arrested.

Blast Off and the Combaticons were later freed once Megatron was resurrected and retook his leadership. They were aboard the Nemesis as it pursued the Ark and Blast Off took part in the assault on the Autobot ship's engines as part of Bruticus. The giant took out many Autobots before he was taken down by the combined efforts of Jazz and the Aerialbots before floating free of the Ark. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
Like most Hasbro Toy Shop exclusive toys, it was initially sold at the store's booth at San Diego Comic-Con and made available at the store's website a few days later.

: Blast Off's alternate mode is a Cybertronian "rocket plane". Unlike the largely gray game model, however, Blast Off's main color is a caramel shade. His weapon accessories can be attached to both sides of the alternate mode's rear section, providing Blast Off with tailfins.

: In addition to his robot and vehicle modes, Blast Off can also combine with his fellow Combaticons into Bruticus and serve as any of the gestalt robot's four limbs, though his official configuration shown in the instructions is the right arm. (The gestalt's hand features optional thumbs that can be flipped out on both sides so that it can be used as either the left or right hand. He can also easily be used as either foot, which is shown by his later retool Topspin, who serves as Ruination's right leg.) Blast Off's arm mode is much longer than the arm modes of the other components. A shorter arm mode can be achieved, but this is not advisable as it puts incredible stress on Blast Off's torso and may damage it. His blasters can be combined with the other Combaticons' weapons to form Bruticus's Sonic Cannon.

: A redeco of Blast Off in more "flashy" colors was available as an individually-released mass retail toy (see below), whereas a redeco in Generation 2 colors (as the Generation 1 Blast Off character) was released as part of a shared Amazon.com/BigBadToyStore exclusive Decepticon Bruticus gift set. When Megatron called for the most ferocious Insecticon, Hardshell put his name forward, and was sent with three other Insecticons to a volcanic region near the equator to search for an Iacon relic. He encountered Bulkhead and fought the Wrecker, but came off second best and lost a mandible into the deal. After recovering, he and his Insecticon companions found the relic containing a small amount of Tox-En, an energon variant. They attempted to track Bulkhead, who had taken most of the Tox-En, and after following a false trail the Autobot had left, eventually caught up with him in a volcano's crater. Though Bulkhead was weakened by the Tox-En, he managed to expose Hardshell to enough Tox-En to severely weaken him. The Autobot hurled the Tox-En at Hardshell, knocking him into a volcanic vent. Returning to the Nemesis, Hardshell faced Megatron's wrath by failing to produce the Tox-En, but mollified his master by relating the news that Bulkhead had been terminated, but Knock Out got on Hardshell's nerves by questioning his claims and stating that his Insecticon partner turned out to be useless. As he gloated about his victory to two of his brothers, a few Vehicons then got on his nerves when they called him and the Insecticons " pit-loving scavengers and scrap-eaters", resulting in a brawl which made Knock Out want them contained after a minor scratch to the chest. However as Knock Out and Hardshell were slowly coming to blows, they had a call from Wheeljack a short time later with the news that Bulkhead wasn't dead after all. Megatron demanded Hardshell return with Wheeljack's spark instead. The Insecticon found the Wrecker at an energon mine and the pair clashed, with Hardshell easily able to elude Wheeljack's grenade and eventually dominating the fight to the point where Wheeljack was on the ground and defenseless. As Hardshell stood over him, ready to deliver a killing blow, he was blasted by a pair of missiles from the Miko-piloted Jackhammer destroying his spark and killing him for good. Hardshell's corpse was taken back to the Nemesis by the other Insecticons, who informed Megatron that a human girl was responsible which came much to Megatron's confusion. Hurt
As Cybertron's core shut down, the Insecticons made their way up further to the surface to find Energon. Shockwave came across Hardshell, Sharpshot and Kickback and convinced them to join the ranks of the Decepticons.

Hardshell and his brothers accompanied Shockwave as they ran a test on Grimlock. However the subject withstood the tests and Hardshell left with his brothers and Shockwave. Later Hardshell was sent by Shockwave in order to challenge a recently escaped Grimlock and Swoop. Using a battlesuit he attempted to blast the two Dinobots away, but luckily Swoop provided Grimlock explosive fuel pods to fling at the Insecticon. Breakdown was on Earth when he received Starscream's signal. He found the air commander buried under rubble by a little Autobot, whom he promptly pummeled. An even smaller, blue Autobot shot at Breakdown, which pleased him, because it meant he was going to kill two Autobots today. At Starscream's insistence, Breakdown got him out of the rubble, and they began chasing and shooting at the Autobots. Breakdown finally cornered them and overwhelmed them with his missile launcher. As they lay dying and Starscream was about to finish them, Optimus Prime got the jump on him and shot Breakdown into the face of a mountainside, causing him to flee to fight another day. Transformers: Prime (graphic novel)
Breakdown had a long history with the Autobot known as Bulkhead, Deus ex Machina to the point one would call them "archenemies". During their rivalry, Breakdown caused Bulkhead great pains. Operation: Breakdown
When Starscream requested that Knock Out and Breakdown come to the Nemesis, Breakdown was much too busy trying to track down an energon trace. He reached an excavation site in Greece, where he encountered an old friend—Bulkhead—and spotted a depiction of an Energon Harvester on an ancient fresco. After breaking the fresco with Bulkhead's head, Breakdown proceeded to the Nemesis, where Soundwave located the device in a museum. As the Autobots had surrounded said museum, Knock Out and Breakdown drew them around to the front for a fight, where Breakdown caused Bumblebee and Arcee to collide with each other and sent Bulkhead flying into Knock Out. This distraction allowed Soundwave to sneak in the back and steal the Harvester. The Harvester was successfully obtained, and Breakdown and Knock Out accompanied Starscream to the energy vein in Greece to test it out. When Bulkhead turned up there to stop them, the two Decepticons attacked him but came off decidedly second-best, as Bulkhead managed to make Breakdown hit Knock Out by accident which allowed Bulkhead to steal Knock Out's Energon prod and use it to shock Breakdown into submission. They fled once the Harvester was destroyed and the other Autobots turned up. Deus ex Machina

Breakdown was buffing Megatron's <s>corpse</s> body when Starscream asked him where Knock Out was. Knock Out, it turned out, had been street racing with the humans again. Some time later, Knock Out radio'd Breakdown to let him know there was another street race on. Much later still, Knock Out contacted him with the news that Bumblebee' human friend had been captured. Breakdown joined the other 'Con in setting a trap for the Autobots in a storage facility. Once Bumblebee and Bulkhead turned up, Breakdown ambushed them. He was able to hold his own against the two Autobots until Knock Out announced he was bugging out, and the distraction resulted in Breakdown being knocked into a wall by Bulkhead. Returning to the Nemesis, Breakdown bore silent witness to Starscream's "cosmetic punishment" of Knock Out. Speed Metal

During a Decepticon plan to melt a glacier to find some energon, Breakdown was hanging around on the hull of the ship when Bulkhead and Arcee appeared nearby. On Knock Out's order, he jumped from the ship and started fighting the two Autobots, unaware that it was a diversion while Optimus Prime scaled a nearby cliff face. He was still fighting them when Optimus caused the heat ray atop the ship to explode and was sent flying by the blast wave. Out of His Head

While out scouting an energon source, Breakdown took the opportunity to ambush Bulkhead. Though the Autobot fought back vigorously, Breakdown overcame him and was about to deliver the killing blow when he was zapped by an energy beam from a nearby helicopter. He came around to find himself a captive of the human organization MECH, the leader of which, Silas, informed him that they wanted to take him apart for his technology. Breakdown was defiant, but the MECH technicians disabled his pain receptors and began dismantling him, including removing his right eye. He was stunned when he was rescued not by the Decepticons, but by Bulkhead. The pair emerged from the rail tunnel to face the main MECH force, and when Silas's helicopter again fired its energy weapon, the 'Con knocked Bulkhead out of the way. After Starscream arrived and chased MECH off, he demanded Breakdown destroy Bulkhead. Breakdown was initially reluctant, but Starscream talked him into it. Though Bulkhead bested Breakdown and used his body to bash the Vehicons, Breakdown was still able to retreat, and Starscream later told him to remember the rescue when the time came to choose between Megatron's leadership and Starscream's. Operation: Breakdown

Breakdown took to wearing an eye-patch as a reminder of his failure. When Soundwave detected a magnetic signature, Breakdown saw the chance to redeem himself and insisted on being the one to retrieve the polarity gauntlet. Once there, however, he found himself under attack by Airachnid, who also coveted the device and made a failed attempt to trap him underground. The two fought over it until Arcee and Bulkhead arrived and joined in the party. Breakdown was able to use the gauntlet to magnetically stick the two Autobots together, but while he was on his way back to the Nemesis, Airachnid ambushed him and webbed him to a derelict gas station. He was freed when the Autobots turned up and the gauntlet was triggered, yanking him off the wall. At one point during the following battle, he got hold of the weapon and used it to hit Bulkhead with an oil derrick. After some more fighting, Airachnid tried to make a getaway with the gauntlet and Bulkhead threw her at Breakdown. Breakdown was forced to return to the ship without the gauntlet, but made up for it by presenting Megatron with Airachnid, who had become stuck to his back. Metal Attraction

Knock Out and Breakdown were sent with some Vehicons to secure a Cybertronian data cylinder, which the Autobots were also after. Breakdown not only got to fight, but got to be on the winning side for a change. Unfortunately when they got back to the Nemesis, they discovered that the cylinder's contents had already been discharged. After Megatron went to try and find Bulkhead, whose noggin held the data, Knock Out detected where Bulkhead was hiding out, and thus he and Breakdown went to the monster truck track. Bulkhead went and hid in the car park, so the two Decepticons started searching in their own ways—in Breakdown's case, smashing random vehicles. They eventually found Bulkhead, but the cylinder data was lost in the process. The pair were ready to take out some revenge until the arrival of more Autobots forced them to retreat. T.M.I.

The pair teamed up again to transport energon around. Though Breakdown was keen to GroundBridge out of there when the Autobots turned up, Knock Out reminded him that they were under orders to lead the Autobots on a chase so the foe would deplete their energon reserves. When Ratchet turned up and bashed their Vehicon escort around, Breakdown was ready to take on the newcomer, but he and Knock Out had to leave after the other Autobots attacked them. Some time later, Breakdown was chatting to a miner when Ratchet entered the cavern. The rematch was short lived as Ratchet overpowered Breakdown. Stronger, Faster

Breakdown and Knock Out watched Soundwave and Airachnid dispute over whether Megatron would return from a visit with Unicron. When Megatron came back to the ship, Breakdown was on the bridge to greet him, though the others had to restrain him when he saw that Megatron was being accompanied by Optimus Prime whom Megatron addressed as "Orion Pax". One Shall Rise, Part 3
The Decepticons, including Breakdown and Knock Out, hit a military base and managed to get away with the energy source they needed for their new space bridge, though they did accidentally let Arcee get on board the ship. Orion Pax, Part 1 Breakdown attempted to contact the Vehicons at the space bridge and, though he had trouble getting through at first, was told everything was fine. Orion Pax, Part 2
Breakdown was assigned to accompany Dreadwing and Airachnid on a mission, the purpose of which was to get rid of Airachnid. Breakdown's quick temper proved their undoing, as Airachnid goaded him into attacking her. After spending a short amount of time trying to unstick the webbing from his face, Breakdown pursued her, leaving Dreadwing webbed to a tree. Though he caught up with Airachnid, it proved to be a trap, and she swiftly dismantled him. A short time later, a MECH team discovered him in pieces. They elected to bring the remains back to base. Crossfire
Knock Out would continue to hunt Iacon relics in Breakdown's memory, Tunnel Vision though he missed Breakdown's buffing. Hurt

While Breakdown was offline, MECH worked to rebuild and partially repair his body. Eventually, his body was reactivated and integrated with the remains of their leader, producing what Silas declared a "Cybernetic Life Augmented by Symbiosis", or "Cylas". This had the side-effect of bringing Breakdown's life signals back online, though they appeared corrupted to the Decepticon sensors. Cylas made good use of Breakdown's body, at least until he failed Megatron and was consigned to Knock Out's dissection table. The Human Factor
Cylas had become Knock Out's guinea pig for virtually any test he could think of. Cylas became a new form of Terrorcon who fed on a host's Energon, and the ensuing plague ravaged the Decepticons' ranks and numbers. Breakdown joined Megatron and Soundwave in the invasion of Iacon, attacking the Stellar Galleries behind the Autobot's front lines in order to acquire the Omega Key. When it turned out Zeta Prime had moved it, Megatron lead them on a run-and-gun mission through the city to the Vaults itself. Breakdown seemed most comfortable during their time in the train tunnels, even challenging Soundwave to a race. However, when Megatron told him in a paternalistic voice to "try not to get crushed by the trains", Breakdown was confused, wondering aloud if his leader had made a joke. After utilizing Dark Energon bombers to blast their way into the Vaults, the squad came up against Zeta Prime himself. He was utilizing a vast machine that rendered him unassailable, allowed him to control portions of the ceiling so they dropped to crush anyone in the room, and generated an arbitrary number of energon clones bearing his likeness that battled savagely in melee combat. Soundwave's interest in the clones caused Breakdown to deride him as a total nerdlinger, but he didn't have any words of mockery when Soundwave discerned the machine's weakness: a core that rapidly overheated and so had to open up to cool off. Even in defeat, however, Zeta Prime had put one over on the Decepticons, as they took from him not the Omega Key, but the device that activated it. And the Key was cranky about being woken up from its nap.

Though he had shot another soldier for daring to contradict him verbally, Megatron probably realized Breakdown's last-ditch maneuver to avoid crashing into Omega Supreme against Megatron's orders had saved all their lives, and so did not summarily execute him. Nor was Breakdown shot for his constant whining during the team's cat-and-mouse chase with Omega Supreme through the upper spires of Iacon towards a platform studded with some anti-air guns, which would hopefully give them a chance to fight back against the robot of unusual size. They managed to crack open Omega's armor with the emplacements, causing him to crash, but the behemoth remained on his feet—literally, as he transformed to robot mode to continue the fight. Breakdown continually expressed amazement and frustration at the seeming unstoppability of Omega Supreme, but Megatron's confidence was proven justified, as they sabotaged the means by which the giant had been repairing himself, apparently bringing him down. Seemingly unable to believe it despite having participated in the fight, Breakdown could only note, "Uh... all hail Megatron!" Yet even then, Omega Supreme was not defeated, badly damaged though he was. At that point, however, he was unable to continue repairing himself and his armor was badly damaged, allowing concentrated fire to finally overwhelm him.

Breakdown remained at Megatron's side as he tamed Omega Supreme, gaining access to Cybertron's core and infecting it with Dark Energon. Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
He comes with a large triangular-barreled cannon based on his roof-mounted vehicle-mode cannon, which has multiple 3mm posts and holes so it can be combined with other weapons and vehicles. As he is a Legion class toy of a bulky, broad-shouldered character, he is really, really, really short even compared to other Legions, let alone his rival Commander-class Bulkhead.
He comes with his packed-in partner Zamu, who transforms into Breakdown's wrist-mounted hammer (though it actually attaches to the truck-mode roof bit which flips up over his wrist, but it's a close enough approximation).
Notes
* Breakdown's model is usable in War for Cybertron multiplayer as the Racer-type chassis for Scout-class characters. His parts are also available in Fall of Cybertron, now classified as Saboteur-type components for the Infiltrator class (although his wheels can also be used by Destroyers).
*Promotional blurbs for the episode "Deus ex Machina" mentioned that Lugnut would be in the episode. Given that Breakdown acts as a rival for Bulkhead in the finished episode—which Animated Lugnut was played up as for Bulkhead in the original Animated Cartoon Network promotional material—the fandom concluded that Breakdown was meant to be Lugnut at some point in the episode's production. The Hub's Mike Vogel challenged this notion at 2011, claiming that Lugnut had been Knock Out's original name, which had been changed because "Lugnut" wasn't "sexy" enough for the character. The Prime Season 1 Blu-ray commentary, however, corroborated the original theory: Breakdown's place in the show was originally intended to belong to Lugnut, since a fiercely loyal Decepticon bruiser was desired, but the show creators wanted a land-based Decepticon instead.
*Breakdown's license plate in "Deus ex Machina" is DGOT 441.
*Despite trying to kill Airachnid, Breakdown has admitted to having a strange infatuation with her. That didn't last.
*Breakdown's color scheme is an homage to Generation 1 Breakdown.
* Breakdown's body parts are available to use in the Hub website's Vector Sigma Bot Builder online game. Normally, you cannot configure a generic 'bot using all Breakdown parts, but you can see what one would look like at right through the magic of Photoshop. While all the characters in the game are hue-shifted from their normal coloration, Breakdown ended up noticeably less-different than his peers, essentially just having a different face color.
* Breakdown is almost a foil to himself. During the War For Cybertron he was displayed as a small, potty mouthed whiner who utilized a Cybertronian race car as his alt mode. During his time on earth he is a strong, bulky, no-nonsense armored SWAT van. I guess steroids will do that too you.

Arms Up Modes
In the Japanese Prime toyline, Breakdown has named powered-up modes when given various Arms Microns in certain configurations:

*War Mode (ウォーモード Wō Mōdo)
**Arms Microns: Jida, Noji, Zamu
: Breakdown's box-back Arms Up mode is just him using the Big Scissor weapon. Yep! Despite all his other link-points, it's just him using a hand-held weapon. Imaginative.

Shockwave was a member of the scientist caste in the industrial city of Kaon. In a reversal of the usual order, he was swayed by the ambitions of the former mining caste member turned gladiator Megatron. Serving as Megatron's "pet mad scientist" and second-in-command, he saw to the fighter's armament during his rise to prominence, all the while fantasizing on the prospect of mass producing such warriors. Thankfully, Megatron's more practical nature reined in Shockwave as the movement which became the Decepticons finally moved out of the shadows.

Fiction
Aligned novels
Shockwave was a scientist who lived on the fringes of Cybertronian society, admitting to Orion Pax he knew little of Iacon. He was one of the scientists whose innovations allowed the mass production of stressed-crystal material used to build Crystal City. There he began his combiner experiments, creating Bruticus Maximus, whose lack of intelligence in combined form made him a danger to friend and foe, and he was put in stasis lock. Shockwave moved to Kaon, becoming a surgeon for the gladiators, where he met Megatronus. He continued his combination experiments with the three Insecticons, whom Megatronus bested in combat: it was in this match that the crowd chanted a shorter name for the gladiator, Megatron. Megatron recognized two things about Shockwave: that he was bereft of any morality or ethics, and that while he was his most loyal ally, he would turn on him one day.

During the Autobot-Decepticon war, Shockwave perfected his experiments with the Constructicons, creating a Devastator which was unleashed on Crystal City. Shockwave set up a laboratory in the ruins but was ordered to take command of the newly conquered city state Tarn. Autobot sympathizers became fodder for experiments, while Shockwave's forces conquered Vos. He quelled dissent in both cities by requesting Vos' Air Commanders photon missile strike Tarn, for which he claimed the Autobots were responsible, and then had a photon missile strike (of supposedly unknown origin) ordered on Vos, killing the Air Commanders whose true loyalty lay with Starscream.

When the Decepticons captured Trypticon Station, Shockwave oversaw two of Starscream's scientists ingest Dark Energon: the powerful result activated a security gyro-inhibitor charge which rendered Shockwave unconscious. Shockwave later subjected the two subjects to a deprivation study, and found it necessary to muzzle them as the duo agonized as a result of Dark Energon's absence in their bodies. Shockwave also used the Sparks of those killed in the capture to turn Trypticon into a Decepticon, able to spawn drones and Minicons in its corridors.

Shockwave remained on Cybertron in command of the Decepticons, while Megatron left with his elite soldiers on the Nemesis to pursue the Autobot Ark. Shockwave promised Megatron that Cybertron would remain as he left it, the notion of which Megatron chastised. He ordered Shockwave to rebuild Cybertron and enslave the remaining Autobots. Transformers: Exodus

Shockwave had been put in charge of a remote Decepticon base in the middle of the Sea of Rust, where he was to oversee a reportedly unlimited source of Energon, a potentially amazing advantage in the waning days of the war for Cybertron. Swoop had been dispatched to the investigate this mysterious Energon-rich Decepticon base when he overheard a conversation between Shockwave and Starscream. Starscream was concerned that Shockwave's attentions were diverted away from the Energon discovery and was wasting his talents on examining the Insecticons he'd discovered and the "cosmic secrets" he had learned. Shockwave's Insecticon horde discovered Swoop's presence, and the Autobot was captured. Secrets (FOC)

Predictably, the other members of Swoop's Autobot team, the Lightning Strike Coalition Force arrived in hopes of retrieving Swoop. Shockwave confronted the four and boasted that this action on their part was central to his plans. The Lightning Strike Coalition Force would make "perfect test subjects" for his experiments, Siege Mentality and as their leader, Grimlock, fought back, Shockwave thanked him for not alerting Optimus Prime of their whereabouts. The five would be fashioned into the ultimate weapon for the Decepticon cause! Last Stand

Shockwave was waiting when Grimlock awoke, strung up in his laboratory. He explained that he had discovered ancient Transformers technology, a bridge that could traverse both space and time. This "space bridge" had offered him a glimpse of many worlds, but most relevantly Shockwave had seen into the past of a certain small blue planet where amazing and terrible creatures once stalked its lands. As Shockwave's machinery took Grimlock apart, he told the Autobot that he and his team would be rebuilt into forms resembling those alien creatures. These Autobot heroes would become the greatest Decepticon weapons. Fragmentation (FOC)

As Grimlock was being reformed, through his pain he saw visions of the future, of being unwittingly unleashed by Starscream and ultimately taking his revenge on Shockwave. Shockwave quells this visions by breaking into Grimlock's mind, reducing the once fiercely intelligent leader to nothing but a feral beserker. Fall

After Optimus Prime and Megatron's group of warriors had left the planet, Shockwave remained behind. Left to his own devices, Shockwave rediscovered a forgotten race of Transformers, the Predacons, and kept close contact with one of their leaders, Ser-Ket. Rage of the Dinobots issue 1

During the War for Cybertron, Shockwave cloned a small army of Predacons and had them micro-chipped so he could track them at all times. On Megatron's orders, he dispatched them to Earth to destroy the Autobots stationed there and secure any energon they could find. Project Predacon

While most of the population left Cybertron during the Great Exodus, Shockwave stayed behind. He spent his time building and scavenging technology, and managed to reverse-engineering space bridge technology. His efforts had come to fruition when Starscream, while delivering Energon to power the bridge, brought him an encrypted Autobot transmission along with two prisoners, Arcee and Cliffjumper. By using his own invention, the cortical psychic patch, on Arcee, Shockwave gained the codes to decrypt the transmission, revealing it to be a message from Optimus Prime calling the Autobots to Earth. He later found the two Autobots sabotaging the space bridge, and was buried in rubble during the ensuing fight. After he dug himself out, he followed them into the space bridge and was only stopped when Arcee hit his optical sensor. Shockwave was still inside the space bridge when it exploded, but Cliffjumper hoped he survived, as he wanted a rematch. Out of the Past

Shockwave found himself back on the abandoned planet Cybertron, blinded. He repaired his injuries and continued his experiment, using recovered CNA to clone a Predacon. Years later, Shockwave detected the energy surge caused by the Omega Lock and went to investigate, encountering Knock Out who had come on an unrelated mission.Scattered Shockwave returned with him to Earth, where Megatron had created a fortress. Darkmount, NV

Megatron appointed Shockwave his first lieutenant in charge of science. With Starscream's interrogation of Wheeljack failing to yield results, Shockwave attempted a cortical psychic patch, but was similarly unable to gain any information. The continuing failure to track down the scattered Autobots led Shockwave to reveal the fruits of his cloning work—a huge Predacon. Scattered Shockwave gave the creature a whiff of Wheeljack's energon before unleashing it, however it eventually returned empty-handed. Prey (episode)

When Darkmount came under attack, Shockwave suggested unleashing the Predacon, only for the beast to be defeated moments after it entered battle. Though Starscream took the opportunity to get some mocking in, Shockwave simply turned and jumped his way down the outside of the fortress before defeating the Autobots himself. The victory was short-lived, as once Optimus Prime turned up, the Autobots turned on their captor. Despite holding his own against them, Shockwave retreated through a GroundBridge once the citadel was destroyed. Rebellion (Prime)

Shockwave then began retrieving Predacon remains from the clones previous sent to Earth, so that he could clone them again and form a new army of Predacons. While he was retrieving Predacon remains in Texas, he was attacked by Smokescreen, Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. Soundwave arrived through a GroundBridge to give Shockwave support, keeping Prime busy while Shockwave grappled with the other two Autobots. Though the fossil broke apart during Shockwave's fight, thanks to Soundwave a fraction of it was GroundBridged back to the Nemesis. Upon returning to the ship and at Megatron's urging, Shockwave opted to let Starscream retrieve further genetic material. Project Predacon

When the Predacon returned safe and well to the Nemesis, Shockwave was content for Megatron to place it under Starscream's command. Starscream wasn't so keen. Chain of Command (Prime)

Shockwave's cloning process neared completion, but the revelation that the existing Predacon was intelligent resulted in the Decepticons rethinking the entire plan, as Predaking might turn against them. Shockwave agreed it was logical that they should use the Autobots to terminate the clones, however Starscream lured the Autobots to the off-site laboratory while he was still purging sensitive information from the computers. He retreated, and after the laboratory was destroyed, discovered that the Synthetic Energon they'd been storing in it had created Cybermatter. Evolution

Shockwave almost put out one of Starscream's eyes over the early arrival of the Autobots, but was talked out of it in time. The Decepticons decided to repair the Omega Lock as a launch mechanism, with Shockwave in charge of perfecting Synthetic Energon. When they realized that Ratchet would be helpful in perfecting the formula, Shockwave instructed Laserbeak to track Agent Fowler to find the Autobot base. Meanwhile Shockwave himself took part in a raid on the Solaris particle collider. Minus One Unfortunately Ultra Magnus proved too much for Shockwave to handle, and he had to be rescued by Predaking.

Back on the Nemesis, he used a cortical psychic patch on Ratchet in an attempt to learn the completed Synth-En formula, but came up empty handed. As a result, the Decepticons had to switch tack and attempt to persuade Ratchet to help them. Persuasion While Ratchet was put to work on the Synthetic Energon formula, Shockwave was called away to oversee the completion of the Omega Lock. As a result he was not there when Ratchet attempted to escape, but he was able to salvage the completed formula from the mess Ratchet left, and began the process of synthesizing enough to power the Omega Lock. Synthesis

Deadlock (episode)‎‎
Shockwave's attempts to activate the Omega Lock were hampered by having to fight Ratchet and the other Autobots who turned up. Ripclaw promptly took off out of the laboratory. Tales of the Beast Hunters Chapter 8 Sometime later, Shockwave realized that the Predacons were as big a threat to the Decepticons as to the Autobots and decided to shut down the cloning project. Tales of the Beast Hunters Chapter 11 He found Smokescreen sneaking around his laboratory Tales of the Beast Hunters Chapter 10 and came up with a new plan to blame the laboratory's destruction on the Autobots, hopefully causing Predaking to eliminate Prime's team. Tales of the Beast Hunters Chapter 11
Shockwave was at the Energon Purification zone when the Decepticons had used it for their stores of Energon. Shockwave challenged Megatron and his troops to a fight, saying if they beat him, he'd join their ranks. Shockwave was indeed defeated, and somewhat reluctantly joined the Decepticon ranks.

When Cybertron was beginning to shut down, Shockwave wanted to reboot it, but to do this, he needed an large energon supply. As he searched for one, he discovered an ancient technology in the Sea of Rust called Space Bridges. Using the observatories of the ancients that used to reside in the Sea of Rust, Shockwave began searching for new planets that he could suck the life out of, and found one rich in raw energy. He also began experimenting on several Insecticons which had started coming onto the planet's surface, and took three unusually intelligent Insecticons, Hardshell, Kickback and Sharpshot, under his command. He later used them to capture five Autobots, whom he gave new forms based on the large reptiles he saw on the planet.

After Megatron was killed during siege on the Autobot's Ark, Starscream took command of the Decepticons. The two argued over the use of a lake of Energon near the Space Bridge tower, and though Shockwave attempted to convince him of its potential usefulness, Starscream simply wanted to drain the lake. When Cliffjumper and Jazz disrupted the fuel line leading to the tower, Shockwave unleashed an army of Insecticons upon them while he attempted to rectify the problem. He failed to do so, but luckily he had already built a replica tower in Kaon. Following Soundwave's resurrection of Megatron, Shockwave went to Kaon meet him and informed him of his discovery of the Space Bridge and the planet they could plunder. Megatron subsequently went to retrieve Trypticon's power core so that they could power a craft to get the there, while Shockwave went to finalize the completion of the tower.

Later, Starscream infiltrated Shockwave's facility and watched as Shockwave and his Insecticons tortured one of the Autobots he had experimented on, before he attempted to recruit Grimlock, which failed and resulted in the Autobot being freed. Shockwave decided to consider the breakout a test of Grimlock's new abilities, and monitored him closely as he fought his Insecticon minions, and proceeded to tear apart every one of them. Much later, Grimlock had attempted to attack Shockwave at the Space Bridge, but he was quickly restrained. Shockwave taunted Grimlock saying that he wouldn't create such a powerful weapon without a means to control it, calling him a pet, and contacted Megatron to let him know the tower was active and the portal was open. After Megatron assigned Shockwave to take charge of the Decepticons in his absence, Grimlock was enraged enough for him to transform into his Tyrannosaurus mode and attack Shockwave, tearing his left arm off and knocking him away with his tail. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
Megatron left Shockwave to handle an unknown battle when he arrived. Shockwave instructed Soundwave to transform into boombox mode and play The Touch! **Accessories: Two-piece laser cannon

: Part of the first wave of 2012 Generations Deluxe Class toys, Fall of Cybertron Shockwave transforms into a "Cybertronian mobile artillery" mode. The front center fuselage of the vehicle becomes a hand-held "laser cannon" that's modeled after the Sling Shock. It can be stored on a 5mm port on his back, and undocumented in his instructions, can replace his hands by folding either one of them in, and tabbing the cannon onto the revealed wrist socket. As another undocumented feature, the cannon actually consists of two pieces, with a large Y-shaped muzzle that can be removed, revealing the sculpted ends of a triple-barreled gun. The muzzle stays on the cannon through friction and, depending on the quality control, can fit rather loosely and slide off if pointed downward. The muzzle part can also be stored on Shockwave's back, forming some sort of jet-pack exhaust.

:Shockwave features two examples of faux-parts: The undersides of his heels resemble the front end of the Y-shaped muzzle part, effectively serving as an extension of the muzzle in vehicle mode, whereas a fake replica of the top end of his head (including his signature "ear" panels) is sculpted on the top side of his vehicle mode (which ends up on the underside of his backpack in robot mode).

:The figure has a "dramatic reveal" feature, where pressing the chest into place causes the head to pop up. The clasp used to hold the spring-loaded piece in place is fairly strong, and requires a small amount of force to latch if the head isn't pressed down before moving the chest assembly. Depending on the individual quality of the figure, this can cause the latch to wear out, and the spring is strong enough that the head will push the whole assembly out of place in vehicle mode if not properly retracted. As such, care should be taken on this step of conversion.

: This toy was repurposed as Generation 1 Shockwave in IDW Publishing's Robots in Disguise comics. His wings have been retooled with additional 5mm posts and ports, and he has been redecoed to have a brighter, metallic shade of purple plastic. Additionally, he has brighter silver paint operations, and some of his other paint operations have been replaced with customer-applied stickers.
He features numerous 5mm ports, such as his shoulder-pads, right hand, and right forearm in robot mode, and his feet in vehicle mode. His rear treads are made of rubberized plastic, and the left tread unfurls to become a hose that attaches to the permanently attached "Hyperflux Cannon" that makes up his left forearm. By repeatedly pressing down on the trigger on top of the cannon, the barrel of the cannon spins while opening and closing, revealing more of its translucent red tip.

:For accessories, he comes with three "beast armor" pieces—a three-eyed chest-plate and two claw-shaped panels—that can be attached to Shockwave in both robot and vehicle modes, with the "claw" pieces attaching to his shoulders and feet via 5mm post.

:His instructions forget to mention that the "spike" panels on his tread backpack need to be swung up for robot show-accuracy, and that the treaded portions themselves are on telescoping joints, and need to be pulled apart and extended for tank mode. ==Notes==
* In the map of Cybertron from the "Binder of Revelation" included in Transformers Vault, Shockwave came from Tarn, which explains why he took control of it during the war.
* As noted above, Shockwave's model is usable in War for Cybertron multiplayer as the Retaliator-type chassis for Scientist-class characters. His parts are also available for Scientists in Fall of Cybertron, now classified as Defender-type components.
* Shockwave is usable in both the Autobot and Decepticon versions of the War for Cybertron games for the DS. He is used only for multiplayer, bonus missions and Arena mode in the Autobot version and used in Multiplayer, Arena mode, and campaign in the Decepticon version.
* In the XBOX 360/PS3 versions of War for Cybertron, Shockwave's left arm is his Plasma Cannon, but in the DS version, it's his right arm.
* The GameStop War for Cybertron commercial describes Shockwave as second-in-command of the Decepticons, and Starscream is never officially referred to as such.
* For said commercial, Shockwave was voiced by Corey Burton, voice actor of Generation 1 and Animated Shockwaves. He later lamented over a forum post that the performance was so rushed and the "gag" nature so out of character, that it hardly even sounded like him: "Two different sessions; and while they were awfully nice to work with, I have to say that the gag line was written and directed completely off-character. Since it was all supposed to be pretty "camp" anyway, and it had to be wedged-into a space that wasn't even there in the initial cut, I just went along with it. Figured it's just a silly bit of hype, that wasn't worth taking seriously enough to fuss over."
* The aforementioned commercial also indicates that Shockwave is evidently a fan of Stan Bush.
* According to his Transformers Hall of Fame bio, Shockwave's emotions sometimes get the better of him, leading to irrational behavior. He also hopes that one day his work will let him reformat all Cybertronians to a new form of existence- and ideally become ruler of Cybertron in the process. Looks like Megatron's hunch wasn't far off...
* Although Shockwave is a Jet in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, he's a ground vehicle in the DS Version. This is most probably because the mission he is unlocked in features his Autobot counterpart, Grimlock, a Heavy Ground vehicle. Shockwave's increasable stats are, however, those of a Flying Vehicle.
* In the Japanese dub of Prime, actor Kenta Miyake channels the unique personality of Shockwave from the Japanese dub of the Generation 1 cartoon in that he's a grizzled old man with a gravelly voice and a short temper. Unlike the the Japanese Generation 1 Shockwave, this Shockwave has a new verbal tic in which he endlessly punctuates sentences by bellowing the word "Shock!"
