[[File:Magic the gathering logo.png|right]]
'''''Magic: The Gathering''''' is a trading card game created in [[1993]] by [[wikia:mtg:Richard Garfield|Richard Garfield,]] [https://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=74250 Ph.D] for [[Wizards of the Coast]]. Players take on the role of [[wikia:matg:Planeswalker|Planeswalker]]s, powerful beings who can travel the [[multiverse]] at will, and do battle with rivals by casting spells, manifesting [[magic]]al artifacts and enchantments, and summoning minions — and even other Planeswalkers — to do their bidding.

In 2017, Wizards of the Coast began experimenting with the concept of creating ''Magic'' cards depicting characters from outside the world of the game's story, beginning with a set of promo cards released at [[HasCon 2017]] based on other [[Hasbro]] properties.<ref>Okay, so TECHNICALLY they'd previously done so with the ''[[wikia:mtg:Arabian Nights|Arabian Nights]]'' expansion, based on a {{w|One Thousand and One Nights|classical work of literature}}, and ''[[wikia:mtg:Portal Three Kingdoms|Portal: Three Kingdoms]]'', based on {{w|Three Kingdoms|real-world Chinese history}} — but you know what we mean. Don't get us started on [[wikia:mtg:Robot Chicken|Robot Chicken]] either.''</ref> Starting in 2021, this became ''Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond'', an expansive series of ''Magic'' cards based on other IP, including ''The Walking Dead'', ''Warhammer 40,000'', ''[[Fortnite]]'' and ''The Lord of the Rings''. ''Universes Beyond'' cards have been made available through limited-time [[wikia:mtg:Secret Lair|online "drops"]], [[wikia:mtg:Preconstructed theme deck|pre-built decks]], and as pack-ins with existing [[wikia:mtg:Booster pack|booster packs]].

==Gameplay==
''Magic: The Gathering'' is a collectable card game in which players build decks of cards and use them to battle each other; the primary goal is to reduce the opponent's '''[[wikia:mtg:Life|life total]]''', which usually starts at 20 or 40 depending on the game format, to zero. Players will draw a random hand of seven cards from their libraries and play them to achieve victory, drawing new cards at a rate of one per turn.

===Mana and color===
[[File:MTG-Megatron.jpg|thumb|right|upright=1.2|Megatron's colors are '''red''' (aggression), '''white''' (order), and '''black''' (power). "[[:File:MegatronG2Hero Bio&TechSpecs.jpg|Peace through tyranny]]", if you will.]]
Perhaps ''Magic: The Gathering''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> most iconic attribute is the '''[[wikia:mtg:Color|color wheel]]''', or "color pie". Magic cards are cast using '''[[wikia:mtg:Mana|mana]]''', which is divided into five colors, each representing a different philosophy and form of gameplay, while usually representing the values of the creatures in those colors.
* '''[[wikia:mtg:White|White]]''' (W) represents peace, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|morality]] and order (though [[Senate|not necessarily good]]). It lays down the law to restrict what its foes can do, and uses defensive tactics and creatures that work together to become stronger, while being able to destroy everything if needs be.
* '''[[wikia:mtg:Blue|Blue]]''' (U) represents logic, caution, and deceit. It likes to make use of trickery and manipulation by drawing extra cards, countering opponents' spells, and evading enemy blockers.
* '''[[wikia:mtg:Black|Black]]''' (B) represents power, death, and [[Starscream (G1)|self-interest]] (though not necessarily evil). It's willing to pay any price to win, liberally spending life and sacrificing minions to gain the advantage, as well as directly destroying enemy creatures.
* '''[[wikia:mtg:Red|Red]]''' (R) represents emotion, freedom and destruction. It prefers immediate solutions to problems, using aggressive tactics and direct damage to deal with its foes, while having riskier ways to obtain new cards.
* '''[[wikia:mtg:Green|Green]]''' (G) represents instinct, connection, and nature. It makes use of powerful creatures and effects that help them grow even stronger to trample enemies into submission, including increasing the amount of mana and resources it can use.
Each color has its own strengths and weaknesses, the latter of which can be mitigated by combining multiple colors into a single deck; however, the more colors that are used, the harder it is for a player to have the correct types and amount of mana to cast their spells, making for a tactical trade-off.

===''Magic'' cards===
[[File:MTG-Arcee.jpg|thumb|left|upright=1.2|Arcee has the supertype '''legendary''', the types '''artifact''' and '''creature''', and the creature type '''Robot'''; her reverse face has the supertype '''legendary''', the type '''artifact''' and the artifact type '''Vehicle'''.]]
''Magic'' divides its cards into multiple different '''[[wikia:mtg:Card type|card types]]'''. '''[[wikia:mtg:Instant|Instant]]''' and '''[[wikia:mtg:Sorcery|sorcery]]''' cards are used to create one-time effects, while other cards, known as '''[[wikia:mtg:Permanent|permanents]]''', remain in play until they are removed. Permanent card types include '''[[wikia:mtg:Land|lands]]''', representing locations across ''Magic''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> multiverse, which produce mana to cast other cards with and can be played at a rate of one per turn; '''[[wikia:mtg:Artifact|artifacts]]''', representing magical or mundane objects, which can typically be activated to produce effects; '''[[wikia:mtg:Enchantment|enchantments]]''', representing lingering magical effects, which usually provide an ongoing effect to the game, and '''[[wikia:mtg:Creature|creatures]]''', which can be used to attack opponents and block incoming attacks. Each creature has a '''power''', representing the damage they can deal each turn, and a '''toughness''', representing the damage they can take each turn.

Permanent types can be combined, most notably in the form of '''[[wikia:mtg:Artifact creature|artifact creatures]]''' (representing inorganic creatures and mechanical constructs) and '''[[wikia:mtg:Enchantment creature|enchantment creatures]]''' (representing inherently-magical creatures and spirits); these follow the rules for creatures, but can be affected by abilities and effects that target artifacts and enchantments, respectively.

Cards can also have '''[[wikia:mtg:Subtype|subtypes]]'''. Creature types can represent species (such as [[Human]], [[Zombie]] and [[Tlalakan (species)|Merfolk]]) or roles (such as [[Sideswipe (G1)|Warrior]], [[Hound (G1)|Scout]] and [[Mara-Al-Utha|Wizard]]). Other permanents can have subtypes that define mechanics of the cards; for instance, the artifact type '''[[wikia:mtg:Vehicle|Vehicle]]''' is used on cards that can become creatures under certain situations, typically when "crewed" by other creatures with a certain total power. '''[[wikia:mtg:Supertype|Supertypes]]''' can be applied to cards of any type; the most common is '''[[wikia:mtg:Legendary|Legendary]]''', which prevents players from controlling more than one permanent of that name, and allows them to be used as a "commander" in the popular "[[wikia:mtg:Commander (format)|Commander]]" format.
While most cards have the same card back, unchanged since ''Magic''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> debut in 1993, certain '''[[wikia:mtg:Double-faced card|double-faced cards]]''' (DFCs) have two playable sides, often representing two states of the same creature or interlinked magical effects. Some of these cards can change which side is in use once they've already been played, via the '''[[wikia:mtg:Transform|Transform]]''' mechanic.

Lastly, there are '''[[wikia:mtg:Token|tokens]]''', representing permanents that aren't part of their owner's deck; instead, they are created by other cards. Tokens act the same way as other permanents, but if they are removed from the battlefield (such as being returned to their owner's hand or sent to the [[wikia:mtg:Graveyard|graveyard]]), they cease to exist.
==''Magic'' and ''Transformers''==
===[[HasCon 2017]]===
[[File:MTG-Grimlock.jpg|thumb|upright=1.5|Me Grimlock tribal commander!]]
The first ''Transformers''-themed ''Magic'' card was a double-faced [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] card included in the [[HasCon 2017]] ''Magic'' promo set, along with fellow [[Hasbro]]-themed cards "{{w|Nerf|Nerf War}}" and "{{w|Dungeons and Dragons|Sword of Dungeons and Dragons}}". As a [[wikia:mtg:Acorn|silver-bordered card]], Grimlock is not legal in officially-sanctioned events and formats but is fine for casual play, and as such gets a bit silly with its rules; "Grimlock, Dinobot Leader" can become "Grimlock, Ferocious King" by "[[Transformation|converting]] a ''Transformers'' toy you have to its other mode". Both sides of Grimlock are Legendary Artifact Creatures, with the front face using the newly-introduced "Autobot" creature type, and the back using the pre-existing "Dinosaur" creature type.

Notably, Grimlock "becomes" his other form rather than using the existing "[[wikia:mtg:Transform|transform]]" keyword, per [[Transformation#"Transform" as a verb|ongoing Hasbro efforts]] to protect their [[trademark]].
===Heroes of the Realm===
[[File:MTG-Optimus-Inspiring-Leader.jpg|thumb|upright=2|"Autobots, turn permanent to other face and tap out!"]]
Part of the 2018 ''[[wikia:mtg:Heroes of the Realm|Heroes of the Realm]]'' series of commemorative cards, made by Wizards of the Coast for their employees as rewards for work on specific projects or teams,<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WNBRWoHq9E Gavin Verhey from Wizards of the Coast explains Heroes of the Realm]</ref> the "Optimus Prime, Inspiring Leader" card was given to the team behind the [[Transformers Trading Card Game]].

Uniquely, Optimus Prime uses the "[[wikia:mtg:Double-faced card#Triple-faced ards|triple-faced card]]" technology used for [[combiner]]s and [[Triple Changer|triple changers]] in the ''Transformers Trading Card Game'', taking the form of a double-sized card folded in half. While his front face is a ''Magic'' card, his back face and oversized, "unbelievably shiny" third face are ''Transformers Trading Card Game'' cards, allowing him to be used in both games. Rather than a normal ''Magic'' type line, Optimus's ''Magic'' face refers to him as "Autobot Character - Bot Mode", a reference to how cards are designated in the ''Transformers Trading Card Game''; however, [[Drew Nolosco]], Global Brand Manager for the Transformers Trading Card Game, clarified that he is indeed a legendary creature.<ref name="heroes">[https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/e5ovx5/comment/f9ladsy/ Comment by u/Wizards_Drew] on [https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/ r/magicTCG] on Reddit</ref>

Because of his unique printing, "Optimus Prime, Inspiring Leader" doesn't function as a double-faced card; instead, his [[alternate mode]] is represented by the ability to temporarily change subtype to "Construct" and gain increased power and toughness, while [[Roll out|granting other creatures]] the "[[wikia:mtg:Trample|trample]]" ability. However, he also has the ability to "Turn target permanent you control to its other face"...though he isn't able to use that ability on ''himself''.<ref name="heroes"/>

As with all ''Heroes of the Realm'' cards, "Optimus Prime, Inspiring Leader" is not legal to play in any real format;<ref>[https://twitter.com/sheldonmenery/status/1203371614668296194 Outside of a unlisted rule for the Commander format that the original recipient of a ''Heroes of the Realm'' card is allowed to use it.]</ref> the cards are novelties designed to be read, rather than played<ref name="heroes"/><ref>{{citesocial|quote=There’s no plans to release the Heroes of the Realm. Announced at [[Hasbro Pulse Con 2022]] as part of the dedicated ''[[wikia:mtg:Universes Beyond|Universes Beyond]]'' series of cards that brings other IPs into the ''Magic: The Gathering'' game, ''[[wikia:mtg:Transformers|Transformers]]'' (expansion code BOT) is the first ''Universes Beyond'' set to be available in booster packs for a premier ''Magic'' set; ''Transformers'' cards are have a roughly 12% chance of being found in packs of ''[[wikia:mtg:The Brothers' War|The Brothers' War]]'' cards. Unlike previous ''Transformers''-themed cards, the ''Universes Beyond'' cards are legal for play in the [[wikia:mtg:Commander (format)|Commander]], [[wikia:mtg:Legacy|Legacy]], and [[wikia:mtg:Vintage|Vintage]] formats.<ref>[https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/transformers-arrives-brothers-war-2022-10-06 TRANSFORMERS Arrives with The Brothers' War | MAGIC: THE GATHERING]</ref>

''Universes Beyond Transformers'' consists of fifteen double-faced cards, each of which is a Legendary Artifact Creature on the front and a Legendary Artifact with the Vehicle subtype on the back (with the exception of [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]], who lack the Vehicle artifact type for [[Non-vehicle non-beast alternate modes|obvious reasons]]). It also includes two Artifact Creature Tokens representing [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] and [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]], created by ''Soundwave, Sonic Spy / Soundwave, Superior Captain''. Rather than "Autobot", the ''Universes Beyond'' cards use the more generic "[[wikia:mtg:Robot|Robot]]" subtype, introduced in the ''[[wikia:mtg:Unfinity|Unfinity]]'' set the previous month.

''Universes Beyond Transformers'' introduces the mechanics '''[[More than Meets the Eye (disambiguation)|More Than Meets the Eye]]''', which allows a double-faced card to be cast with its back face up, and '''[[Living metal|Living Metal]]''', an alternative to the "Crew" mechanic that allows vehicles to become artifact creatures on their user's turn. It also includes '''Convert''', a renamed version of the Transform mechanic, for [[Transformation#"Transform" as a verb|legal reasons]] yet again; anything in the game that cares about transforming things will treat "Convert" as the same as "Transform".<ref>[https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/the-brothers-war-release-notes ''The Brother's War'' Release Notes; also contains the release notes for ''Universes Beyond Transformers'']</ref>.

Each ''Transformers'' card is available in two variants: one with art inspired by the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|Generation 1 cartoon]] and one based on ''[[Transformers: Shattered Glass (franchise)|Shattered Glass]]'', with the exception of "Arcee, Sharpshooter / Arcee, Acrobatic Coupe" and the Ravage and Laserbeak tokens, which only have Generation 1 versions available. The color alignments, names and mechanics remain the same regardless of if the character is their original or ''Shattered Glass'' incarnation, with unfortunate side effects such as that the art of ''Shattered Glass'' [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]] is labeled as a "hero", while being depicted about to execute a helpless Decepticon. Part of the [[wikia:mtg:Secret Lair|Secret Lair Drop Series]] of premium card reissues, the ''Transformers'' "[[wikia:mtg:List of Magic slang#Superdrop|superdrop]]" comprises three sets of "reskinned" ''Magic'' cards with new, Transformers-themed art (and in the case of the "Optimus Prime vs Megatron" set, new names). Unlike previous ''Transformers'' crossover cards, which exclusively consisted of artifact creatures, the ''Secret Lair'' sets use a wider variety of card types.

The "Optimus Prime vs Megatron" drop consists of two reskinned artifact creatures as [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], plus a reskinned artifact as the [[AllSpark]]; all three cards are double-sided, providing two different pieces of art, though mechanically they are considered single-faced cards. The "Roll Out or Rise Up" drop contains a variety of instant, sorcery and enchantment cards, each with art portraying an iconic scene from ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'', albeit using the designs of [[CHUG|newer toys]] in place of the original character models. Lastly, the "One Shall Stand, One Shall Fall" drop consists of "[[wikia:mtg:Full-art|full-art]]" versions of the [[wikia:mtg:Basic land|five basic land cards]], each depicting a different locale on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]].<ref>[https://www.polygon.com/23486638/magic-the-gathering-transformers-secret-lair-reveal Take a first look at Magic: The Gathering’s reskinned Secret Lair Transformers cards - Polygon]</ref> All three drops additionally contained the bonus card "[[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]", a reskinned version of the land [https://scryfall.com/card/dmc/204/command-tower Command Tower].

The ''Transformers'' Secret Lair cards went on sale for a limited time from [[December 5]]th, [[2022]].
==Notes==
* The decision to pack ''Transformers'' cards in with ''The Brothers' War'' packs was made due to the thematic and aesthetic parallels between the story of the Transformers and the titular Brothers' War.<ref>{{citesocial|quote=Brothers’ War is about giant machines fighting each other. Transformers is about giant machines fighting each other. [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|The leader of the two sides]] [[Megatron (Movie)|are even brothers in both.]] There just was a lot of thematic overlap.|link=https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/696921078664232960/maybe-i-missed-it-but-why-are-the-transformer|name=Mark Rosewater|site=Tumblr|year=2022|month=10|day=01|(defunct=)}}</ref> However, ''Magic'' head designer Mark Rosewater would later admit that doing so was a misstep, as the ''Transformers'' cards clashed with the nostalgic feel of the set.<ref>{{citesocial|link=https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/state-of-design-2023|site=magic.wizards.com|quote=Transformer as an overlay made some sense because the set was about giant robots, but the core of the set for many players was nostalgia. These players felt seeing cards of a different IP flew in the face of that.|name=Mark Rosewater|year=2023|month=07|day=31}}</ref>
* Despite the cards being designed with their respective [[robot mode]] as their front face, most of the art pieces for the Universes Beyond series seem to depict a transformation from vehicle to robot: Ratchet is seen arriving on the scene in ambulance mode to repair [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], Arcee is transforming into robot form mid-jump, [[Spike Witwicky]] is disembarking from Goldbug's [[Volkswagen]] mode, and so on.
{{bigthumb|Alphabeta greco-sol.png|200px|''Alpha Beta'' as written in an unnamed Cybertronian script.}}

An '''alphabet''' (from the Greek Αλφάβητος, "alpha beta") is a collection of written characters used to represent sounds or graphemes. Alphabets differ from ''logographies'' where each character represents a word or idea and ''syllabaries'' where characters represent syllables.

Simply put:
* English is written in the Latin Alphabet
* Chinese is written in the Mandarin Logography
* Japanese can be written in the {{w|hiragana}} syllabary

''See also: [[Cybertronian languages]], [[Cybertronian argot]]''

==Alphabets and Transformers==
For the purposes of Transformers, "alphabet" most frequently refers to a '''{{w|Substitution cipher|Substitution Alphabet}}''' based on the Latin Alphabet where English words are written using an 'alien' alphabet whose characters have a 1:1 correlation to the Latin Alphabet.

The use of such Substitution Alphabets in Transformers dates from 1996's [[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|Beast Wars]] which featured Alphabets developed for use in both the [[Maximal]] and [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] computer displays.
[[Image:Marvel23 mountrushmore.jpg|thumb|Decepticon graffito-tags from the 1986 comic book story "[[Decepticon Graffiti!]]" later evolved into a substitution alphabet.]]
Fan-produced fonts created around the same time (loosely) based on Transformer writing which appeared in the [[Marvel Comics|US comic]] and [[The Transformers (cartoon)|cartoon]] in 1985-86 would later (beginning in 2007) begin creeping into official Transformers productions, though the substitution-alphabet they represent does not, of course, work for the original stories they were based on.

[[Cyberglyphics]], an 'ancient' Transformers script created for the original 2007 movie, is particularly subject to dissonance... originally developed and presented as a quasi-syllabary used to subtitle Decepticon dialog, it was later declared to be an ancient logography no one used anymore, and then promptly turned into a Substitution Alphabet. ''*sigh*'' Since only this last system is used to encode meaningful content...

Finally, there are Substitution Alphabets originating ''outside'' of the Transformers mythos, such as [[wikia:starwars:Aurebesh|Aurabesh]]. (Aurabesh appeared on a monitor in [[...For All Mankind]].)

==List of alphabets==
===Generation 1 alphabets===
====Autobot script====
Originally based on samples of Autobot writing from the [[1986]] ''[[The Transformers (cartoon)|Transformers ]]'' episode "[[Cosmic Rust (episode)|Cosmic Rust]]" and [[1987]] ''[[Transformers: The Headmasters (cartoon)|The Headmasters]]''<nowiki></nowiki>'s "[[I Risk My Life for Earth]]" which represented '''[[Cybertronian language|Ancient Autobot]]''', a script no longer in common usage on Cybertron, but still used on colony worlds such as [[Antilla]] and [[Master (planet)|Master]].
[[Image:Autobot_Translations.jpg|600px|center]]

A fan-font based on this script was used by the [[AllSpark Wars]] "mini-ARG" in [[2007]] <small>(again associated with an Autobot colony, and not the 'main' Transformer language)</small> and its use has since proliferated as a de-facto 'default' Autobot written language. Generally carries a slight ethnocentric connotation.

====Decepticon script====
Originally based on scraps of Decepticon language from the [[1986]] comic book [[Decepticon Graffiti!]], a fan-font based on this script was used by the AllSpark Wars "mini-ARG" in 2007 and its use has since proliferated across many media as a Decepticon written language.
[[Image:Decepticon Translations.jpg|600px|center]]

===Cybertronix (Beast Era) alphabets===
Both these alphabets are nominally held to represent [[Cybertronix]] the common spoken language used by both [[Maximal]]s and [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]]s in the 23rd century.
====Maximal alphabet====
====Predacon alphabet====

===Live-Action series alphabets===
===''Animated'' alphabets===
===="Greco-Sol" Grecian====
An (incomplete) Substitution Alphabet created to represent ever-prominent Greek letters (from [[Alpha Trion (Animated)|Alpha Trion]] to [[Omega Supreme (Animated)|Omega Supreme]]) rather than the usual Latin Alphabet substitute, "Greco-Sol" first appeared in the [[2010]] ''[[Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II]]'' book, used to label Omega Supreme and his comrades.
[[Image:Greco-sol.png|600px]]

This alphabet lacks an official designation. Its unofficial placeholder name "Greco-Sol" ''could'' mean Grecian-by-way-of-Sol (the human Solar System) but it's ''really'' a corruption of the phrase ''"I'''t's all Greek''' to me!"''
'''The search for The Rise leads the 'bots of Security Operations into Iacon’s criminal underbelly, but who’s hunting who amidst Swindle’s hive of scum and villainy?'''

==Synopsis==
In his quarters, a dejected [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] tunes into [[Andromeda (G1)|Andromeda]]'s latest news broadcast: since the fall of the [[Tether]], [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]] has denounced the [[Decepticon|Ascenticon]]s and put out a bounty on several key members of [[The Rise]] accused of involvement in the recent attacks, but the Ascenticons are now openly questioning the effectiveness of [[Security Operations]] against The Rise and the failure of the [[Autobot]]s to effectively govern. Not even the arrival of Prowl's old colleague [[Nightbeat (G1)|Nightbeat]] shakes him out of his funk; as tensions heighten and civil unrest sweeps [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Prowl admits that his inability to prevent the crisis has made him feel like a failure. Nightbeat tries to cheer up his friend by telling him that they might still have a chance to turn things around—there's someone in custody that Prowl might like to speak with...

Elsewhere, in [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]]'s [[Xeno-Quarter]], [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] assesses the damage to the city's [[A'ovan habitat]]. [[A'ovan]] representative [[Pra'tyne]] reports that they may have lost a tenth of the arcology's native species during the Tether's destruction. Hound finds his somber condolences cut off when [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]] bounds onto the scene to demand a place in Hound's new counterterrorism unit. Already turned down by [[Firestar (G1)|Novastar]], Sideswipe's crestfallen when Hound tactfully explains that he lacks the experience and discipline Hound requires from his troops, and warns him not to push himself into being something he's not ready to be. As Hound walks off, Sideswipe grumbles that he ''does'' want to be something: something ''useful''.

[[Strongarm (BW)|Strongarm]] and [[Bumper (G1)|Bumper]] watch as Nightbeat introduces Prowl to [[Singe]], arrested for stealing energon during the Tether's collapse. Prowl's angry and straightforward tactics toe the line of what's acceptable, but Nightbeat assures a concerned Strongarm that Prowl knows what he's doing. Indeed, the interrogation proves fruitful; as Bumper and Strongarm gear up for their next major operation, Strongarm worries for her safety and the increasingly fraught political situation on Cybertron. With Security Operations overstretched so, hundreds of Ascenticons have formed a blockade around [[Ascenticon Headquarter]]s to keep out [[Chromia (G1)|Chromia]]'s officers; thousands of protesters have convened outside of the [[Senate]], [[Lodestar (Titan)|Lodestar]] remains injured and unable to fly, the [[Winged Moon]]'s orbital trajectory has sent it spinning towards Cybertron's sun, and fighting between Autobot and Ascenticon supporters threatens to consume the [[Tagan Heights]]. But, as Sideswipe pulls up to join the team on their raid, Prowl encourages Strongarm to keep faith: thanks to Singe's tipoff, Security Operations might finally get the chance to get on the trail of The Rise to hit them ''before'' they strike... and that trail starts at [[Swindle's]], whose shady proprietors employed Singe as part of an energon fencing operation, and who might have willingly supplied Rise members with stolen energon. Prowl lays out the plan: the inconspicuous Bumper will infiltrate the clientele, Sideswipe will take watch on the roof, while he, Strongarm, and Nightbeat will stay in reserve until needed—overriding Sideswipe's moaning and Bumper's concerns, Prowl tells the two to get into position.

Inside Swindle's, Cybertronians mingle, enjoy contraband energon, and place extravagant bets on the rowdy [[skitter]] races. [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] officiates the latest such race from his skybox, [[Headlock (G1)|Headlock]] runs numbers, and [[Trickdiamond]] works the crowd, but their new business partner [[Mindwipe (G1)|Mindwipe]] and his compatriot [[Whisper (G1)|Visper]] have little patience for their black-market sleaze—they're just here for the stolen energon Swindle promised. Unfortunately for them, Swindle explains that he doesn't ''have'' the goods, not after Singe's arrest partway into the heist. Correctly deducing that the police must be onto him, Mindwipe promptly lays into Swindle for foolishly inviting him here despite the danger, and his suspicions are vindicated when he spies Bumper in the crowd below, intently watching Visper's every move. On his private comms channel, Bumper reports his findings back to Prowl—when he mentions that Visper's winged compatriot might be on to him, Prowl immediately recognizes Bumper's description of the suspect and warns him to keep his distance; Mindwipe's ability to emit data-loaded light pulses makes him an extremely dangerous foe. Bumper asks for more information, before a quiet voice from over his shoulder cuts him off: Mindwipe has taken advantage of his distraction to ambush him from behind!

Nightbeat, Prowl, and Strongarm promptly kick down the door, and, as the other patrons panic, Visper transforms and nails Nightbeat in the chest with his [[alternate mode]] while Mindwipe takes advantage of the sudden chaos to first order a hypnotized Bumper to kill Prowl, then call in [[Storm Cloud (G1)|Storm Cloud]] to scramble all nearby communications. Storm Cloud does so, then dives straight through the building's roof—but Sideswipe promptly leaps after Storm Cloud and stuns the Riser with a single jab of his [[thermal lance]]. Swindle, [[Gutcruncher (G1)|Gutcruncher]], and Trickdiamond feign innocence as Prowl and Strongarm struggle to pin down the brainwashed Bumper; Visper takes advantage of the distraction to escape, followed by Mindwipe. As the pair soar away, Mindwipe puts through a call to [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], cutting through his superior's furious bluster to warn him that Storm Cloud's capture might further compromise the Rise. With the situation now mostly under control, Prowl instructs Strongarm to keep Bumper pinned down until the hypnosis wears off, then storms off to confront Swindle. Brushing aside Swindle's fake outrage, Prowl warns him that, with a confirmed Riser now in police custody, Swindle's going away for a long time: Prowl ''will'' convince Storm Cloud to tell him everything he knows... and he's certain that the info will include the fact that Swindle's cut a deal with the terrorists.

At Rise headquarters, [[Sixshot (G1)|Sixshot]] unlocks a secure room, and informs reminds [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] and [[Quake (G1)|Quake]] that they're getting ready to scuttle their current base in anticipation of another security crackdown. With all of Cybertron out for their blood, Sixshot reminds them they'd ''better'' not give him any trouble during the move...
"I'm just saying, I've had two deployments since I graduated and on '''both''' of them I wound up getting shot at. '''I'm cursed, Bumper.'''" <br>
"Nah. Streetwise gave you a '''commendation''', didn't he? Primus just knows you can '''take''' getting shot at." <br>
"And how would that be different from a curse?"
"Oh, no." <br>
"What's the problem?" <br>
"Sideswipe's here. I'm '''definitely''' going to get shot at again." <br>

"That's against the natural order of things, Headlock. In a time of crisis, everyone should be looking for a '''escape'''. Trickdiamond, throw out some '''bargains'''. Gotta stamp on caution's shameful, unprofitable face whenever it shows itself."
==Notes==
===Continuity notes===
* The Decepticons are rising! [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]] has followed through on his threat to denounce the Ascenticons as liars—"''Decept''icons"—a threat he made in the [[Rise of the Decepticons: All Fall Down|previous issue]]. In [[The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Four|#10]], [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Orion Pax]] had previously encouraged the Senate to rebrand [[The Rise]] with a new name, although all he only got as far as "Dece-" before he got cut off.
* After more than a year, Prowl's pet returns; last seen in [[The World In Your Eyes Part Five|issue #5]] this issue dubs her "[[Green]]" and notes that Prowl purchased her egg from a [[Voin]] trader. Prowl explains that her species, the [[flyt]]s, attach their egg strands to [[Leviathan (G1)|Leviathan]]; this is consistent with Leviathan's appearance in [[The World In Your Eyes Part Three|issue #3]], which saw the massive crawler surrounded by a flock of flyts as she trundled along.
* [[Rubble]] briefly passed by the [[A'ovan habitat]] in issue #5, while [[The World In Your Eyes Part Two|issue #2]] had [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] mention that the [[skitter]]s who appear here at an illegal (but also very cute!) gambling racetrack stowed away in [[A'ovan]] refugee ships and subsequently turned invasive after arriving on the planet.
* [[Singe]] last appeared in [[Arcee/Greenlight: Run|issue #18]], where he and [[Gutcruncher (G1)|Gutcruncer]] raided an energon storage yard; while Gutcruncher escaped, Singe got the snot knocked out of him after he shot at [[Gauge]] and attracted [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]]'s unwanted attention, leading to his arrest. ''This'' issue reveals that the pair weren't just randomly looting: they were deliberately trying to procure extra energon for [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]]'s under-the-table operations.
* Strongarm mentions that she's seen action twice since joining Security Operations; her first mission took place in [[The Change In Your Nature Part Two|issue #15]], where she helped provide covering fire during a standoff in the [[Cybertronian Mountains]], and her second adventure occurred in issue #18, where she helped bring in Singe after Arcee took him down.
* Strongarm mentions receiving a commendation from [[Streetwise (G1)|Streetwise]]; he received a previous namedrop in the last issue, which established that he ran one of Cybertron's police academies.
* Following her battle with [[Vigilem]] in [[The Change In Your Nature Part Five|issue #17]], [[Lodestar (Titan)|Lodestar]] remains wounded. Orion Pax tells [[Lightbright (G1)|Lightbright]] to prepare her Titan for a weaponized refit to pursue Vigilem, whom [[Skystalker (G1)|Skystalker]] observed had gone missing in the last issue.
* Sideswipe previously wielded his [[thermal lance]] in [[The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Three|issue #9]].
* [[Headlock (G1)|Headlock]]'s last chronological appearance was also in issue #9; however, it's not clear if he's ''always'' worked for Swindle or if this is a more recent job he's taken on since Prowl busted him. Either way, when Sideswipe takes down Storm Cloud, Headlock is shown to have already made his escape through a nearby door... presumably so that he doesn't repeat his encounter with Cybertronian law enforcement.
* Ever since his infamous run-in with [[Rubble]] in issue #5, [[Quake (G1)|Quake]]'s absence has proven conspicuous; confirming what prior issues implied, this issue reveals that he's under the clandestine protection of The Rise along with [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]], the 'bot suspected of killing [[Brainstorm (G1)|Brainstorm]] just before the events of [[The World In Your Eyes Part One|issue #1]].
* An old poster in Frenzy's room reads "IACON ARENA: [[Apeface|APEFACE]] vs. [[Lugnut (TF 2010)|LUGNUT]]." The ''[[Transformers Valentine's Day Special]]'' one-shot touched upon Apeface's former [[gladiatorial combat|gladiator]] career, while [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] remembered a bout with Lugnut during a flashback in [[The Change In Your Nature Part Three|issue #16]].

===Transformers references===
* Prowl watches a news broadcast that features [[Andromeda (G1)|Andromeda]]; although her [[Andromeda (TransTech)|original incarnation]] hailed from the multiversal city of [[Axiom Nexus]], subsequent "[[Transformers: Wings Universe|Wings Universe]]" tales eventually established the existence of a nigh-identical "[[Generation 1 continuity family|Generation 1]]" version of the character. Continuing this unexpected [[Fun Publications]] homage, Andromeda specifically describes [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] and the other members of The Rise as "Cybertron's most wanted," in what's assuredly a reference to the [[Cybertron's Most Wanted|2015 BotCon comic of the same name]] (a comic in which, coincidentially, ''TransTech'' Andromeda appeared).
* Obscure female Autobot [[Vibes]], who last appeared in [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]]'s ''[[Transformers: The War Within|The War Within]]'' miniseries, makes a cameo in this issue as a Security Operations member alongside [[Chromia (G1)|Chromia]] and [[Pointblank]] during a standoff with the [[Ascenticon Guard]].
* Features of Cybertron alluded to in this issue include the [[Tagan Heights]], which played a major role in the ''[[Transformers: War Within: The Dark Ages|The Dark Ages]]'', and the [[Rust Sea]].
* The riot at the Tagan Heights include a pair of dragon-ish Transformers who appear to be based on [[Doublecross]] and [[Grotusque]]. What's not clear is if they're actually meant to ''be'' these characters, as "Doublecross" is green and "Grotusque" is blue. Another robot in the same scene, meanwhile, sports [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]'s head, but isn't immediately recognizable as a pre-existing character.
* The splash panel on page ten features a ''huge'' variety of Transformers watching the skitter race. ''[[The Transformers: More than Meets the Eye|More than Meets the Eye]]'' original characters [[Anode]] and [[Riptide (G1)|Riptide]] appear, and other prominent characters from the [[2005 IDW continuity|prior IDW universe]] include [[Misfire (G1)|Misfire]] and [[Pipes (G1)|Pipes]]—drawn specifically to resemble [[Alex Milne]]'s concept art for the character as he appeared in ''More than Meets the Eye''—[[Hubcap (G1)|Hubcap]], based on his appearance in the ''[[The Transformers: Sins of the Wreckers|Sins of the Wreckers]]'' miniseries, [[Vanquish (G1)|Vanquish]], who featured in ''[[The Transformers: Till All Are One|Till All Are One]]'', and a [[NAIL#Beige two-headed_NAIL|two-headed Transformer]] who cameoed in the earliest issues of ''[[The Transformers: Robots in Disguise|Robots in Disguise]]''. Other faces in the crowd include [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]], the [[Seacon (G1)|Seacon]]s [[Tentakil (G1)|Tentakil]] and [[Nautilator]], a mini-Megatron lookalike that's undoubtedly ''[[Titans Return (toyline)|Titans Return]]'' character [[Nucleon (Generations)|Nucleon]], a made-up incarnation of [[Megaplex]] using [[Starscream (Armada)|''Armada'' Starscream]]'s [[Starscream (Armada)/toys#Energon|''Energon'']] toy as a base, and the [[Micromaster]]s [[Big Daddy (G1)|Big Daddy]], [[Trip-Up]], [[Hubs]], [[Sledge (G1)|Sledge]], and [[Twirl (G1)|Twirl]] (phew!) Finally, the red dog-faced bot sitting next to Sledge on the bottom right is [[Sharpclaw]], an original character created by the daughter of prominent ''Transformers'' artist and writer [[Nick Roche]]. <ref>[https://twitter.com/NickRoche/status/1113496674540953600?s=19 Nick Roche on Twitter] </ref>
* Non-specific characters in the crowd includes a character based [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]'s [[Starscream (G1)/toys#Machine Wars|Machine Wars]] body; below them is an off-white Transformer who appears to sport [[Quark]]'s head. Another face in the crowd on page thirteen resembles [[Rung (G1)]], although he shares [[Toxitron (Universe)|Toxitron]]'s lime and purple paint job.
* [[Trickdiamond]] debuted in the '[[Transformers Unite Warriors]]'' manga as part of [[Megaempress]]'s [[4 Guards]]. Although her [[bio]] noted that she possessed a connection to Swindle, this never really played a role in any of her adventures in the ''[[Transformers Unite Warriors|Unite Warriors]]'' or ''[[Transformers Legends (comic)|Legends]]'' comics, but her appearance here seems to take inspiration from her original profile and reimagines her as one of Swindle's business partners.
* Trickdiamond hawks double measures of [[engex]], an intoxicating beverage that appeared throughout the [[2005 IDW continuity]], [[K-Juice]], [[Roller (IDW)|Roller]]'s drink of choice in ''[[The Transformers: More than Meets the Eye|More than Meets the Eye]]'', and illicit "multiworld simulations," a reference to [[Multi-World|the computer game]] that appeared in [[Afterdeath!|issue #26]] of the [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|US Marvel comic]].
* Mindwipe sardonically notes that Swindle probably pushes [[Nucleon (substance)|nucleon]], which in addition to its more famous [[Action Master]]-creating properties, has been used as a narcotic in various ''Transformers'' stories such as ''[[Beast Wars: Uprising]]'', and [[syk]], an illegal circuit booster that debuted in Marvel UK's [[Earthforce]] stories.

===Real-life references===
* One of the protest signs at the Senate reads "No Justice, No Rule," a variant on the "{{w|No justice, no peace}}" slogan often used during anti-racism protests.

===Errors===
* The credits page for this issue accidentally misspells artist [[Anna Malkova]]'s name as "Asnna Malkova."
* Issue #18 depicted Singe as all-black in keeping with his ''[[Singe#War_for_Cybertron:_Siege|''War for Cybertron]]'' toy; ''this'' issue, however, colors him to resemble his [[Singe#The_Transformers|original 1988 figure]], with white forearms and blue thighs. However, this issue ''also'' takes the liberty of depicting him with a white helmet and blue crest, a trait that none of his toys possess.
* On page 8, Prowl's line "Bumper take a look" is missing a comma.

===Other notes===
* Originally solicited for April 1st, this issue was deliberately pushed back to mid-June as part of [[IDW Publishing]]'s response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

===Covers (3)===
'''A chance meeting between two lonely souls grows into something more.'''

==Synopsis==
[[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]]'s new position of Chief of Space Security ''sounds'' glamorous... but the job of defending [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]'s inner moon turns out to be a job that's as isolated as it is mundane—Cosmos spends most of his time either gathering drifting space debris or rescuing [[Gears (G1)|Gears]] from one mishap after another. While on one such patrol, Cosmos picks up a transmission from what he ''assumes'' is a stranded Gears, but actually belongs to [[Blast Off (G1)|Blast Off]], a lonely orbital transport specialist who's taking a detour specifically to annoy his boss.

Flustered and eager to hear a friendly voice for the first time in many cycles, Cosmos's overenthusiastic response leads him to initially worry that he's scared away his mysterious new friend... but he's surprised and pleased to learn that Blast Off is still interested in making conversation. This chance meeting soon evolves into a long-distance relationship; the pair chat as Cosmos goes about his duties, discussing this and that, but after many, many cycles of conversation Cosmos eventually points out that he's never even ''seen'' Blast Off's face.

Almost immediately, Blast Off pings him a picture, one that includes both him ''and'' a dozen other 'bots. As a confused Cosmos tries to match a name to a face, Blast Off laughs; the picture was sent as a joke, to keep him distracted...and, as Cosmos picks up a new blip on his radar system, he turns and comes face-to-face with Blast Off for the first time.

==Notes==
*'''First appearances:''' [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]], [[Blast Off (G1)|Blast Off]]

===Continuity notes===
* The [[Winged Moon]] makes a cameo appearance in the first panel.
* [[Gears (G1)|Gears]] made some prior appearances in the earliest issues of [[Transformers (2019 comic)|the main ongoing]] comic as a worker on the [[Tether]]. Given the unclear (and extremely long) timeframe of this story, it's not clear his frequent space-related accidents happened while he was working on some prior job, or if occasionally drifting off into space is just a natural hazard of working on a space elevator.
* Blast Off's picture is a veritable smorgasbord of characters (but see "Transformers references" for more on that); the presence of the now-unstable and currently AWOL [[Quake (G1)|Quake]] in the photograph suggests that it might have been taken at some point around the time of the [[War of the Threefold Spark]].

===Transformers references===
* Potential vacation spots suggested by Blast Off include [[Monacus]] and [[Eurythma]]; the former appeared in ''[[The Transformers (cartoon)|The Transformers]]'' episode "[[The Gambler]]", the latter appeared in "[[Carnage in C-Minor]]".
* Blast Off's picture contains a ''huge'' variety of characters taken from all across the franchise. At this stage in the game, only two have actually appeared in the main ''Transformers'' ongoing, so it's hard to say at this point which ones might show up in the future! Notable cameos include [[Tailgate (G1)|Tailgate]], Blast Off and the four [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticon]]s-to-be, [[Quake (G1)|Quake]], [[Hardhead (G1)|Hardhead]], [[First Aid (G1)|First Aid]], what's probably ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 franchise)|Robots in Disguise]]'' [[Tow-Line]], ''[[Transformers Animated (franchise)|Animated]]'' [[Blackout (Animated)|Blackout]] and [[Lugnut (Animated)|Lugnut]], ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'' [[Tidal Wave (Armada)|Tidal Wave]], [[Jetfire (Armada)|Jetfire]], and [[Scavenger (Armada)|Scavenger]], and, last but not least, [[Aileron]]. Generic characters based off pre-existing toys include a flier who uses [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]]'s [[Jetfire (G1)/toys#Classics |''Classics'' toy]], and another 'bot based off of ''Animated'' [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]] and [[Ironhide (Animated)|Ironhide]]'s [[256-OZU-004|Cybertronian bodies]].

===Other trivia===
* The print version of this story has no title; the title was suggested by editor [[David Mariotte]]. <ref> Twitter conversation with Sara Pitre-Durocher: "I hadn't given it a title, so it was David Mariotte that thought of it."</ref>
