The term "Trans-scan" has so far only been used for movie continuity, so the article is only movie based. If the term ever gets used elsewhere then that can be added too I would think.--ZacWilliam 12:37, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Trans-scan permenance
I've been considering this very subject... various movie references like Megatron becoming a 'rare' triple-changer and Bumblebee's unique ability to scan more than one type of vehicle (in the 2007 DS game) seem to be reflecting something "real" about this continuity.

It seems to be that even though Transformers can scan anything and re-adapt their form... that's not the same thing as Transforming. Bumblebee can Transform between his two modes at a run, under fire, in 2 seconds without breaking pace-- that's what his body is 'set up' to Transform into. Trans-scanning a new form OTOH requires:
# A template (We think. It's a bit unclear where 'Cybertronian modes' come from.)
# Time, as the body re-liquifies and re-configures. Say... a minute or more.
# A period of vulnerability (probably.)

So any Transformer can alter their disguise, but they can't do it "on the fly" in the same sense as transforming from one mode to another.

Look at Nightscream from Beast Machines-- he had a built-in DNA scanner and could presumably reformat himself into another Beast Mode if he found another fossil to scan... but that's a different process than changing modes between 'bot and bat.

So Megatron's sudden triple-changer status actually is a big deal, because it means he can switch seamlessly between all 3 modes. -Derik 22:38, 14 June 2009 (EDT)
:I also think that not every trans-scanned altmode would be equally good. There are many things that might make a scan undesirable. Transformation time, vulnerable spots, fuel efficiency. If a Transformer found a scan that worked well for him, I would think he would want to stick with it. A new form might have unforeseen weaknesses unless processor time is dedicated to computations and simulations looking for flaws or just optimizing the form's tech specs. There would be some engineering needed in adapting to a new form, and the more quickly that is done the greater possibility for sub-optimal results. - Starfield 23:05, 14 June 2009 (EDT)

:The impression I got from movie 1 and the CGI therein is that a movieverse TF can natively fold itself into almost any configuration - they're flexible along a truly huge number of joints and can curl up into a ball, fold down to a sheet or fold themselves up like a paper aeroplane. When they scan - as with Bumblebee going from one Camero to another, or the "protoforms" scanning vehicles - they're actually limiting themselves in many ways, with the shell, wheels, etc restricting their degrees of freedom. The tradeoff, of course, is giving them a useful transport/disguise mode - curling up into a ball isn't much use. But it's mostly surface - their robot mode is their robot mode, and will look pretty close to identical regardless of what they transform into. - SanityOrMadness 23:25, 14 June 2009 (EDT)
::This. Bumblebee actually had occasional trouble starting because the vehicle he scanned has minor engine problems. They create exact copies of the vehicles they scan-- down to their internal operation.
Galvatron
In answer to Sipher's question he posed as a comment to his edit, no, I don't think Galvatron should be here. Whether they're the same character or not, Galvatron shows up plenty enough as his own character from the future (and tends to fight/team up/interact with Megatron) to warrant his own entry. Otherwise, a combined Megatron/Galvatron entry is just going to be way too long and confusing as hell. (And, yeah, I am factoring in that Galvatron II will prolly already get his own entry.) --ItsWalky 01:47, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

:Probably a good idea. While some characters (Smokescreen/Hoise, Bumblebee/Goldbug) get upgraded/renamed and basicalyl continue in a straight line, Galvatron time-jumps and even fights himself. In MANY continuities, Megatron doesnt' even BECOME Galvatron. -Derik 02:26, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
::Right. Galvatron's riding the fence between Hot Rod/Rodimus, Bumblebee/Goldbug and Dead Guy/Cyclonus, Waspinator/Thrust. Often enough he has no real connection to Megatron at all. And he's appeared enough to fight "himself" or on his own Galvatron-specific terms that it pushes it over the edge to Needs Own Page, in my opinion. --ItsWalky 02:30, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm looking at the issue, and I can't see if it's been confirmed yet that Soundwave's employer is Senator Ratbat. It's likely, but seemingly not confirmed in this issue.--Rosicrucian 21:14, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

:Let's say it's extreamly likely, as it's just about as strongly implied by the narrative (and by narrative convention) as possible without someone going "Psst, hey kid..." from behind the curtain. I mean we have a clearly manipulative, selfserving Ratbat talking to his off-panel underling who speaks in Soundwave-style about technological advances and about manipulating Megatron, and then later you have Soundwave showing up and "manipulating" Megatron while talking about the offpannel Master who sent him. Pretty definative case narratively speaking.

If it's somehow improbably wrong we can change it later (and I'll eat this wiki). ;) --ZacWilliam 07:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Sunk in its dark and trackless depths lie ancient and forgotten relics, mingled with the spoils and remains of Man. This ocean, this vast mystery, is Seaspray's element, and he loves it dearly.

The oceans of Earth are not alone in his affections. On any planet, at any time, Seaspray is a consummate sailor. Because he is not very comfortable on land, Seaspray does not do well in ground fighting. On the water, however, he has few equals.

Seaspray was first seen on Earth fighting pirates with Tracks and Cliffjumper when a time warp unleashed a ship full of them on the 20th century. After locating the vessel with his radar, Seaspray helped the other Autobots push the galleon back through the timewarp before it sealed up. Dinobot Island, Part 2

He was next seen helping Perceptor and Beachcomber on a geological survey near the coast. When Blitzwing and the Seekers staged a surprise attack, Seaspray engaged Ramjet in battle over open waters. Remarkably, the dim-witted Decepticon tried to ram the Autobot hovercraft and ended up splashing into the briny drink for his troubles. Seaspray got thrown for a loop when Ramjet eventually came back up for air, but still managed to shoot down the Conehead in the end. Thrust's discovery of a nearby electrum pool took away any chance of a fair fight, however, and so Seaspray and Perceptor were captured and taken back to the Decepticon undersea base.

After the entire Decepticon army coated themselves with electrum, Starscream forced the two Autobots to fight to the death for the amusement of his troops. They attempted to escape by blowing a hole in the outer hull, but were caught on the way out by Megatron, who was returning with a third prisoner, Beachcomber. The Autobot geologist later managed to disable their guards, and they shot their way to freedom through a porthole. Using Seaspray's back-mounted propellers, they sped their way to safety and joined up with the rest of the Autobots at the electrum pool. The Golden Lagoon

Working with the New York City police on their Crimebuster program, Seaspray had the unenviable task of patrolling the Hudson River and other waterways. He found nothing useful but sludge and grime. Make Tracks

Out waterskiing with Bumblebee one afternoon, the two Autobots stopped at dusk and Seaspray engaged in an old Earth superstition, wishing on the first star of the evening. He didn't tell Bumblebee what his wish was for, but moments later, they received a garbled distress signal from a distant planet. After conferring with Optimus Prime, they took Perceptor and Cosmos to investigate the signal, only to discover it had been sent by a Decepticon creation known as Deceptitran, requesting aid because his slaves were revolting. The Autobots quickly got involved with the local revolution, and "bubble-head" just as quickly fell head over heels for Alana, one of the human leaders of the rebellion. Thanks to the miraculous Well of Transformation used by her people, the Tlalakans, both Seaspray and Alana were able to experience life in the other's shoes, with him temporarily becoming (mostly) human and her changing into a robot. Deceptitran and his allies were defeated, and Seaspray proved that even a chunky robot with a throat full of mouthwash can find true love. Sea Change

In 2006, Seaspray joined Broadside on a search for Trypticon's remains, only to find the giant Decepticon city had not been permanently destroyed by Metroplex as they had believed. Seaspray picked up a trail, but must have lost it, because it ultimately took Perceptor's separate analysis to locate Trypticon in the Federated Democratic Republic...whatever of Carbombya. Thief in the Night
Later, he was chosen to travel to Earth aboard the starship Orion under Bumblebee's command, only to run into the super-freak named Sunstorm. Night of the Combaticons The Autobots found themselves forced into a devil's deal with Starscream in order to protect the Decepticon leader from his crazed clone brother. Seaspray's G1 figure stands three inches tall and is one of the smaller figures of the line. The figure has a simple color scheme consisting of blue arms and feet, a white chest, and yellow legs as well as head and propeller system. The figure's only real articulation is at the shoulders. Like all the Mini Vehicles, Seaspray is available in a variety of pack-in variations. He was available with or without a rubsign and with or without a Mini-spy figure. The mold has the Takara copyright stamp on the bottom of the feet portion.

Generation 2
*Seaspray (Mini Vehicle, 1993)

Seaspray's G2 release used the same mold as the G1 release, but with the dark blue replaced with a dark blue chrome. It is otherwise identical in mold and color.

A rare variant exists that may have been a test shot run. These figures were apparently given out internally by Hasbro as Christmas ornaments, as they have been found bagged with a string attached and a card reading "Transformers Christmas ornament" on one side and "Merry Christmas from the Boys' Toys Marketing" on the other. The same treatment has been seen with a variant G2 Beachcomber as well.

Trivia
*Seaspray made an appearance in one of five original Generation 1 public service announcements, urging nautical children to wear life-preservers. In this PSA, he was voiced by Wally Burr rather than Alan Oppenheimer, his usual voice actor.
*A reference to Seaspray is made in the video game based on the Michael Bay film. Various billboards advertise "Seaspray's Fish 'n' Chips". On the DS Versions, a boat in Tranquility is named U.S.S. Seaspray.
