'''An Autobot and a Decepticon arrive from Cybertron, each with histories tied to the Autobot crew.'''

==Synopsis==
[[File:AWheeljack-Fire.jpg|left|thumb|BURN in the FIRES of Inferno! Maxi—err, Autobot.]]
''Surrounded by flames, [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]] tries to lift off a large piece of debris holding down [[Wheeljack (Armada)|Wheeljack]]'s legs. Over Wheeljack's protest, Hot Shot runs to get additional assistance, leaving his friend waiting. Outside of the flames, Hot Shot's superior refuses to let Hot Shot endanger himself by entering the flames again.''

On [[Earth]], the kids mock [[Side Swipe (Armada)|Side Swipe]]'s self-introduction. Side Swipe greets [[Blurr (Armada)|Blurr]], but Blurr is embarrassed and denies knowing Side Swipe. After coming inside, Side Swipe stands on his own head and calls for help to jog Blurr's memory of the two's meeting.

[[File:Past Part 1 Side Swipe caught.jpg|200px|thumb|Meanwhile, in Robots in Disguise...]]
''On a sunny [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Side Swipe has been suspended upside down (possibly due to a poor attempt at a parachute landing). After a brief name exchange, Blurr blasts the rope holding Side Swipe in place.''

Seeking his savior, Side Swipe followed Blurr to Earth. But Blurr has no interest in the enthusiastic wannabe and walks away. When Side Swipe tries to follow, he stumbles and disturbs Blurr's work. Blurr, [[Optimus Prime (Armada)/Cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]], and Hot Shot meet and decide that Hot Shot is best suited to becomes Side Swipe's mentor.

[[Fred (Armada)|Fred]] and [[Billy (Armada)|Billy]] play a video game. Billy wins, but both players are scolded by [[Alexis Thi Dang (Armada)|Alexis]].

Hot Shot walks out into the rain to take Side Swipe under his wing. After the two are introduced, they go to the target range. Side Swipe manages to destroy his target, but without anything close to precision. Outside, Side Swipe displays that he can't transform very fast either.

''Wheeljack, stranded inside of the burning terrain, calls out for help. While Hot Shot doesn't answer, [[Megatron (Armada)/Cartoon continuity|Megatron]] marches from the flames.''

By a pretty lake, Side Swipe and Hot Shot have a heart to heart. Side Swipe explains how he idolizes the dedication of Blurr, but Hot Shot instead suggests Side Swipe set more reasonable goals to find his own identity. A black car monitors the two in secret.

[[File:ArmadaHotShot Wheeljack sunset.jpg|left|thumb|"Sure would suck if I was trapped in a fire and rescued by Megatron, owing my life to him, forcing us to be on opposite sides."]]

Alexis enjoys Fred and Billy's video game.

Cruising on a highway, the black car aggressively approaches the two [[Autobot]]s. They attempt to ignore him (assuming he's domestic to the planet), but Wheeljack knocks away Side Swipe and shows his defaced Autobot logo to Hot Shot. Side Swipe connects with his [[Mini-Con]] and accelerates to fight back, while Hot Shot remembers:

''On Cybertron, years ago, Hot Shot is appointed the supervisor of an enthusiastic younger bot. In person, Wheeljack's idolization matches Side Swipe's idolization of Blurr. Wheeljack then cryptically mentions the possibility of the two being separated by battle.''

Use of holograms, vanishing, and aggressive driving allow Wheeljack to easily knock Side Swipe off of a cliff on one side of the road. With the younger Autobot out of the way, Hot Shot and Wheeljack are formally reintroduced. Wheeljack disregards Hot Shot's apology for the abandonment on Cybertron and explains how Megatron saved and recruited him. Now the two stand on opposite sides, and Wheeljack faces down Hot Shot with his weapon drawn... and fires.

"Prepare yourself, Hot Shot. You're about to get a little surprise from your past. You may have forgotten what you did to me but I will ''never'' forget."
:—'''Wheeljack''' expositing as he drives toward Hot Shot and Side Swipe.

"I think you're mistaken, Hot Shot. I didn't come here for revenge. I'm no longer the Wheeljack you knew. Like I said, I've been reborn. I've become... a Decepticon!"<br>
"No! It's... not true!"<br>
"Sorry, but it is. Our friendship's over. Let's forget the past and get on with our lives so we can battle as enemies, understand? There's nothing I can do to change the past."
:—'''Wheeljack''', oddly, claiming he isn't here for revenge, when he's here for revenge.

==Notes==
===Differences with ''Micron Legend''===
===Animation and technical errors===
* Connecting with his Mini-Con changes Side Swipe's appearance, but in the next overhead shot, they re-use artwork of him before he powerlinked.
* In the shot with multiple Wheeljacks they are all missing their damaged Autobot symbols.
* Additionally, Blurr is missing the Autobot symbol on his chest in Side Swipe's flashback and then again in the following scene back at the base.
* While Wheeljack is chasing Hotshot and Side Swipe, in one shot, his small Decepticon symbol is missing.
* When Wheeljack first pulls his weapon out, it's colored grey. In the next shot, it's the proper color of yellow.
* Hot Shot and Wheeljack are drawn without the details that indicate having terrestrial alternate modes. But Megatron is animated in his Earth animation model, instead of the pre-scan animation model he had in "[[First Encounter]]".
* Wheeljack claims that he isn't here for revenge, when the rest of the episode clearly shows he's obsessed with the past and is here to take revenge on Hot Shot. This is perhaps due to translation errors or merely Wheeljack's own twisted perspective.

===Trivia===
[[Image:OfficerOfficer.jpg|thumb|200px|right|Merry Primus, everyone!]]
*The kanji 過去 would be as "''kako''" and 前編 would be pronounced as "''zenpen'', while "''innen''" is used for 因縁.
*This episode has no opening narration at all.
*One of the members of Hot Shot's team on Cybertron is identical in design to [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]], only... much larger.
*At the beginning, Wheeljack was colored white, like his [[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]] [[Wheeljack (G1)|namesake]].
*Hot Shot's other superior on Cybertron, Peritus Maximus, uses an identical design to [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]], but in different colors and much, much smaller.
*It's never explained if Wheeljack is teleporting, or using light-manipulation.
*Nor is it explained where Side Swipe picked up his Mini-Con Nightbeat.
*Cybertron is shown to have clouds and an Earth-like atmosphere during daylight scenes in this episode.
*This episode ends on a cliffhanger, with the screen fading to black as Wheeljack points his weapon at Hot Shot, before a gunshot is heard.
'''An Autobot and a Decepticon arrive from Cybertron, each with histories tied to the Autobot crew.'''

==Synopsis==

Now the two stand on opposite sides, and Wheeljack faces down Hot Shot with his weapon drawn... and fires.
==Quotes==
"Attention soldier! Side Swipe, as this moment, you will be working under the supervision and guidance of Hot Shot."<br>
"Under Hot Shot?"<br>
"That's right kid."<br>
"Well, who's that?"<br>
"I am! I'm Hot Shot, you idiot!"
:—'''Hot Shot''' assigns '''Side Swipe''' to himself.

==Notes==
===Differences with ''Micron Legend''===
===Animation and technical errors===

===Trivia===
==Quotes==
"Attention soldier! Side Swipe, as this moment, you will be working under the supervision and guidance of Hot Shot."<br>
"Under Hot Shot?"<br>
"That's right kid."<br>
"Well, who's that?"<br>
"I am! I'm Hot Shot, you idiot!"
:—'''Hot Shot''' assigns '''Side Swipe''' to himself.

==Notes==
===Differences with ''Micron Legend''===
===Animation and technical errors===

===Trivia===

Crosscut was part of [[Squadron X]], a team of Decepticons which served as a brutal counterpart to the Autobots' [[Wrecker]]s: his reputation was helped by the fact everyone mistook him for a member of the [[Decepticon Justice Division]]. He became friends with [[Triton]] after [[Springer (G1)|Springer]] welded them together in battle. {{Storylink|The Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers|Crosscut's Squadron X profile}} The Wreckers and Squadron X's rivalry came to a head on [[Pova]], but after being dispatched in an aerial battle, he and the rest of Squadron X were rounded up in a containment unit and put in inhibitor harnesses. {{storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 4|Last Stand of the Wreckers #4}}

However, Pova had been neutral ground, meaning the Wreckers had no right to take prisoners there. When [[Impactor (G1)|Impactor]], the increasingly deranged leader of the Wreckers, was ordered to release his hated enemies, he snapped and murdered the entire squadron in cold blood while they were still in chains. {{storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5|Last Stand of the Wreckers #5}} This was covered up, and according to official records and [[Ironfist (G1)|Fisitron]]'s ''[[Wreckers: Declassified]]'' datalogs, Crosscut and the other members of Squadron X were able to somehow escape their harnesses, forcing the Wreckers to execute rather than imprison them. {{storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 4|Last Stand of the Wreckers #4}}
The '''Aerialbots''' are the first of the new Autobot Power Core drone teams. They have been assigned to the modest [[Skyburst]], who uses the drones to enhance his own abilities for dangerous search and rescue missions.

The Aerialbots include:

*'''Chopper Drone'''
*'''Skyburst with Aerialbots''' (Power Core Combiners 5-pack, 2010)

: Part of the first wave of ''Power Core Combiners'' 5 Packs, the Aerialbot drones are a pack of made-up air vehicles (they have elements of different real craft, but really, none of these actually exist) that came with their Commander Skyburst. Each one automatically transforms from vehicle to limb when attached to a PCC connector peg, and re-convert to vehicle when detached. They can be attached to any Commander figure, though they can only be used as a single limb-type:

:* '''Chopper Drone''' — Arm (Skyburst's left)

: The Aerialbot molds were also used to make components for two other Power Core Combiner teams: the Recon Plane Drone and Combat Helicopter Drone molds were used for the [[Destron (PCC)|Destrons]], while the Fighter Jet Drone and Chopper Drone were used for the [[Protectobot (PCC)|Protectobots]]. Later, the entire set was redecoed into [[Tread Bolt|Jetmaster]]'s drone limbs.
'''Rodimus's team continues their pursuit of Brainstorm through time, only to find that they are more involved in past events than expected—and that Brainstorm's goal is not what they believed it to be.'''

==Synopsis==

[[Hot Rod (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Rodimus]]'s team have followed [[Brainstorm]] back to [[Clampdown (event)|Clampdown]]-era [[Rodion]], and have spread out to search for the rogue scientist. While Rodimus watches for [[Optimus Prime (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Orion Pax]] at the police station alongside [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]], he checks in with the others: [[Rewind (G1)|Rewind]] is surveying the city from his position on an airship; the bored [[Riptide (G1)|Riptide]] is watching the waterways; a nervous [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] is riding the rails to avoid the risk of running into his past self; and [[Cyclonus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Cyclonus]] and [[Tailgate (G1)|Tailgate]] look down on the city from a nearby cliff. Emotionally moved by the sight of the pristine planet, unblemished by war, to the point that he is struck dumb, Cyclonus doesn't respond to Rodimus, so Tailgate takes the communicator and quickly makes up a story about having set down for repairs. After a moment of silence, Cyclonus apologizes to Tailgate for physically abusing him in the past.

Rodimus then calls [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], who expresses concern over the fact that Rewind's database is being overwritten, as it implies that Brainstorm's alteration to the timeline may have already happened, or is destined to. As such, if they cannot stop him, Perceptor must dismantle the time machine to undo the paradox, warning that many things could "go wrong". Reminded by those words that he had forgotten about [[Rung (G1)|Rung]], Rodimus contacts the psychotherapist, who is staking out [[Maccadam's Old Oil House|Maccadam's New Oil House]]. Unfortunately, Brainstorm is also watching the bar, and when he spots Rung building a model of the ''[[Lost Light]]'', he realizes that he has been followed back in time and abandons his plans. Brainstorm's flight is spotted by Rewind, and Cyclonus gives chase, but just before he can land a missile-hit, Brainstorm's [[briefcase]] activates and he time-jumps away. At Perceptor's instruction, the team re-groups at Maccadam's, and he sends them after their quarry.

Arriving one year further in the past, in 4th Cycle 499, the team are contacted by Perceptor and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Ultra Magnus]], who believe that Maccadam's is important, and that the deductions they made about Brainstorm's plans may have been hasty. Accordingly, the group splits in two: Chromedome, Rewind and Whirl keep watch over the police station, while the rest remain at the bar. But Brainstorm has gone to neither, and is, in fact, at a wellbeing clinic several miles away, where he ambushes and knocks out the Rung of the past...

At the police station, Chromedome and Rewind spend time stargazing, but Rewind is preoccupied with thoughts of the unknown fate of [[Dominus Ambus]]. He proposes using the time-case to finally discover what befell his former [[Conjunx Endura]], but Chromedome worries that he will want to change history and save Dominus's life, which would mean that his and Rewind's relationship would never happen. Before they can discuss those unfortunate ramifications too deeply, Whirl alerts them to the arrival of his own past self at the station. Recognizing the perp his past self is bringing in as [[Crossbar]], Whirl realizes what specific day it is—the day [[Megatron (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Megatron]] is arrested.

Back at Maccadam's, the rest of the team watch the younger Megatron and [[Impactor (G1)|Impactor]] sitting at a nearby table. When Rung goes to fetch a [[curly straw]] for Tailgate, however, he accidentally knocks over a jumped-up cadet's drink, and winds up being thrown into Megatron and Impactor's table when he refuses to clean up the mess. This instigates the famous bar-room brawl that leads to Megatron's arrest, and as the ''Lost Light''ers make themselves scarce, Brainstorm, looking on from outside, grimaces at the realization his attempt to prevent it by incapacitating the past-Rung has failed.

A few hours later, at the police station, after Megatron has been arrested and subsequently released by Pax, the [[senate]]'s goon squad arrives for payback and kills officers [[Springarm]] and [[Wheelarch]]. Chromedome refuses to let Rewind intervene, regrettably understanding that history must be preserved, but is too slow to stop the deranged Whirl leaping into the fray when three new thugs come stomping up—including the [[Heavies]], who destroyed Whirl's life when they wrecked his watchmaking business. Hungry for revenge, Whirl takes the two huge 'bots down with violent ease; Chromedome intervenes before he can kill them, reminding Whirl that they ''have'' to live, so that Chromedome can have his own encounter with them in a year's time. Whirl justifies his actions by explaining his history with the Heavies... a history which is then elaborated upon by Hammer, who tells Whirl that the pair acted on the orders of the [[Functionist Council]], who wanted him punished him for abandoning his assigned job in the Aerial Corps, and who were also responsible for his later [[empurata]]. With icy detachment, Whirl vents his rage by shooting the third 'bot, who is unfamiliar to him, but whom he deems guilty by association.

Back in the present, on the ''Lost Light'', Perceptor discovers that time has ceased to flow in all other parts of the universe, indicating the imminent collapse of the original timeline. Studying the dates Rodimus's team has travelled to, Megatron realizes that they have been working on a flawed principle: the dates correspond to major events in ''Megatron's'' life, not Orion Pax's. It is Megatron's life that Brainstorm is trying to unmake... and even as Ultra Magnus's internal criminal database is overwritten, and Megatron disappears from his records, in the past, Brainstorm appears at the moment of Megatron's creation, and levels his weapons at the once and future Decepticon leader's half-built form...
"Is it the time travel? 'Cos I'm only just wrapping my head around it myself. I mean, '''think about it''': I'm somewhere out there right now, buried underground. Me! Underground! Right now! Me! The way I see it, you just have to accept what's happening as something that's... happening. And I think that's true of so many things in life."<br>
==Notes==
===Continuity notes===
*''The Custom-Made Now'' is the third part of a trilogy of flashback stories, following ''Chaos Theory'' and ''Shadowplay''.<ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 36:00 to 36:07</ref>
*The first time period our heroes jump to is that of the first chapter of the "Shadowplay" trilogy, from [[Shadowplay, Part 1: Post Hoc|issue #9]], while the second is that of the first part of "Chaos Theory", from [[Chaos Theory Part 1|issue #21]] of the [[The Transformers (IDW)|2009-2011 ongoing series]]. Two pages from each issue are reprinted in context.
*The billboard-airship that Rewind hitches a lift on was seen in issue #9, and can be seen again in the reprinted pages.
*Cyclonus apologises for kicking Tailgate back in [[Life After the Big Bang|issue #4]].
*We get another look at "Magnus-vision", the way Magnus sees the world around him, seen before in [[Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations|the 2012 annual]].
*As Brainstorm flies away from Maccadam's, we see two 'bots carrying a body along the bridge below him. The corpse is that of [[Sherma|Senator Sherma]], who is about to be hung from the bridge, as we saw in issue #9; logically, it would follow that the two 'bots carrying it are the unnamed killers from [[Shadowplay, Part 2: Patternism|issue #10]], before their [[spark]]s are implanted in the bodies of [[Streaker]] and [[Fallout (G1)|Fallout]].
*Rung has previously been described as a "historical constant" by Rewind in [[Shadowplay (Conclusion): An Intimate Beheading|issue #11]], because of his presence at many important points in Cybertronian history. It now appears that this reputation is partly a product of the present-day Rung travelling back in time to these points in time, rather than his just happening to be there in the regular flow of history—we find out this issue that the Rung who appeared in the past sequences in "Chaos Theory" and "Shadowplay" were both the present-day Rung, in turn validating last issue's implication that the actions Rodimus's team are taking are and were always part of the timeline they knew.
*In-keeping with that, now we know why Rung didn't have any memory of the bar-room brawl when Megatron brought it up back in [[World, Shut Your Mouth Part 1: Towards Peace|issue #28]] - for him, it hadn't happened yet.
*Previously, issue 9's scene of Rung assembling a model of the ''Lost Light'' seemed to imply a history to the ship, which was further hinted at when Nightbeat appeared to recognize the vessel in [[...And the Damage Done: Dark Cybertron Finale|''Dark Cybertron Finale'']]. Now we understand that Nightbeat was remembering the model and recognizing its anachronistic nature.
*Past-Rung's scooter is his wheeled backpack, which we learned was a separate attachment back in [[Little Victories|issue #22]].
*The song that past-Rung whistles as Brainstorm ambushes him is "[[The Empyrean Suite]]", the enigmatic piece of music with sinister connotations of which we are not yet aware, previously mentioned in issues [[Scavengers (Part 2): Who's Afraid of the DJD?|#8]] and [[The Gloaming|#16]]. The notes in Rung's speech balloon match those when Swerve played the tune in #16.
*Chromedome and Rewind stargaze, imagining constellations in the shape of Prowl being beaten up, a habit of theirs mentioned in issue #16.
*Rewind brings up his and [[Dominus Ambus]]'s search for [[Moonbase One|Luna 1]], originally discussed in [[Before & After|issue #12]].
*Rung groans "always the head" after he gets clobbered, hearkening back to the grave cranial injuries he took in [[Interiors|issue #6]].
*When the police arrive to break up the bar fight, the vehicle they arrive in appears to be [[Roller (IDW)|Roller]], or at least a 'bot with his [[alternate mode]]. The policebots themselves share a [[body-type]] with [[Springarm]] and [[Wheelarch]].
*The Heavies and their history with Whirl were originally introduced in issue #6. Chromedome's encounter with them took place in [[Shadowplay (Conclusion): An Intimate Beheading|issue #11]], in which they, [[Kroma]] and [[Macabre]] raided the police station in order to capture [[Shockwave (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Senator Shockwave]]. In the issue, [[Kroma]] noted in passing that Shockwave's whereabouts had been revealed through a tip-off from parties unknown; the Heavies go conspicuously ''un''-mindwiped at the end of this story, and hear Chromedome tell Whirl about the attack and Shockwave's presence. Could ''they'' have been the source of the information?
*Whirl kills the Heavies' unnamed cohort (who we've never seen before, for retroactively obvious reasons) with the curious weapon he took from Brainstorm's armory last issue.
*We learn that last issue's events, in 1st Cycle 502, took place on the same day as [[Megatron Origin issue 1|''Megatron Origin'' #1]].
*Though he has always been unforthcoming about his origins, we know that Megatron, as a [[Point One Percenter]], should have a green spark, but the one seen inside his half-built frame on the final page of this issue is the traditional blue. However, we ''very'' much doubt that's an error...

===Transformers references===
*Rodimus keeps his eye on the Rodion police station using a telescopic visor that slides down out of his helmet over his eyes, just like the one he used to zoom in on the captured shuttle in ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]''.
*A generic working the waterway is colored like [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]].
*The train track that Chromedome rides is labelled "C-131", the [[List of Japanese ID numbers|Japanese ID number]] of [[Raiden (Headmasters)|Raiden]], combined form of the [[Trainbot|''TRAIN''bots]].

===Real-life references===
*This issue's title, "Stet", is a Latin word meaning "let it stand", used in proofreading to indicate that a previously-marked change is to be ignored, much like Brainstorm's attempts to change time.
*When trying to recall Quark's name, Rung believes it might be "{{w|QWERTY|Qwerty}}", after the most common modern-day keyboard layout.
*The address of Rung's wellbeing clinic is NX-74205, the registry number of the [[wikia:c:memoryalpha:USS Defiant (2370)|USS Defiant]] on ''[[Star Trek|Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]''.
*To add even more to the image of [[Jesus]] established in #21 of this series in which he's literally crucified for the sins of others, Rodimus refers to the past in which he was not born yet as P.R: Pre-Rodimus, similar to how we refer to everything that happened before year 1 as B.C: Before Christ.
*The reprint of ''Chaos Theory'' and ''Shadowplay'' scenes was inspired by ''Back To The Future II'', which showed scenes from the first film from a different angle.Roberts has said this story is the most self-referential the comic will get, and he was conscious that showing the origin of the Sparkeater and the ship might be skirting the line.<ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 50:10 to 51:11</ref>
* On page 7 a small robot resembles a mouse droid from Star Wars
*On the same page Rattrap and Scrounge can be seen

===Errors===
*The credits on the inside front cover mistakenly claim that the reprinted pages of Megatron and Rung's bar-room escapades are from [[Space Opera Act 2: Out of the Silent Planet|issue #20]] of the ongoing, rather than #22.
*On the same page, Kotteri's variant cover (see below) is listed as a "30th Anniversary cover", but the 30th anniversary is over; per the [[Onyx Interface Part Three: ONoffON|''The Transformers'' #37]], the third variant should be back to being a "retailer incentive" cover.
*The bar brawl and Megatron's arrest are dated here to 4th Cycle 499; issue #28 previously gave a date of 4th Cycle 496 for those same events.

===Other trivia===
*Originally intended for release in January 2015, month-long delays afflicting multiple IDW titles saw this issue pushed to the first week of February.
*The pages reprinted from previous issues are included in addition to the regular 22 pages of story, making for a 26-page story.
*This issue features the first visible instance of Whirl's original, pre-Empurata face.
*Roberts had vaguely planned for a "Let's Kill Hitler" time-travel story for ages but Megatron becoming captain turned it into a more "multi-layered" story.<ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 43:20 to 44:10</ref>

'''Faced with the choice of allowing Megatron to be created, or damning Cybertron in order to create a better universe, the time-travelling ''Lost Light''ers learn that there truly is no future but that which they make for themselves.'''

==Synopsis==

Realizing his life is in danger, [[Megatron (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Megatron]] lashes out at [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], demanding that he be sent back in time to save himself. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Ultra Magnus]] restrains the former [[Decepticon]], and he and Perceptor insist that [[Hot Rod (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Rodimus]] has the matter well in hand. Megatron is unconvinced, given Rodimus's track record, but the decision is out of his hands: Perceptor sends Rodimus's team back in time, draining the last of the power from the ship's [[quantum generator]]s.

In the distant past, in [[Con Facility 113]], [[Brainstorm]] aims his gun at the [[reproduction|constructed cold]] Megatron's half-built form, but is suddenly taken out by a whirlwind-generating "[[grenado]]" hurled by Rodimus as he and his team materialize on the scene. Consulting the facility computers, [[Rung (G1)|Rung]] observes that Brainstorm has tried to delete information on Megatron from them, and calls upon [[Rewind (G1)|Rewind]] to help him fill in the blanks, but Rewind finds that his database has now been completely overwritten with the history of [[Functionist Universe|the alternate timeline]]. Brainstorm has not yet been stopped! The scientist recover and draws his gun once more, but Rung—having seen in the computer records that Brainstorm had been hesitating for ten long minutes before they arrived—is able to talk him into standing down. Brainstorm explains that he never wanted to kill anyone: he had intended to track Megatron through time using a [[spark]]print taken from him during his therapy session with Rung, planning simply to steer him away from "life-changing events", only to have his hand forced when he realized part-way into his journey that he was following a print accidentally taken from ''Rung'' instead. At that point, Brainstorm's injuries take their toll and he keels over... but just as he hits the floor, ''Rewind'' uses his gun to kill Megatron instead!

The shaken archivist shares what his overwritten database has told him: that if Megatron dies, although Cybertron will be consigned to a dystopian [[Functionism|Functionist]]-governed future, the ''rest of the universe'' will be spared the devastation of the Transformers' war. No one can really argue against his logic... except for [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]], who refuses to let the Functionists "win". Grabbing Megatron's body when nobody is looking and snatching the [[Point One Percenter]] spark taken from [[Moonbase One|Luna 1]] from Brainstorm's chest compartment, he locks himself in a nearby room and implants the spark into Megatron's body. With this action, Whirl ensures the safety of the existing timeline: Magnus contacts Rodimus let him know that time has begun moving again, but that, with the quantum engines out of power, they are now stranded in the past. To spare them this fate, Tailgate suggests they use the [[time phone]] to try and prevent the ''[[Lost Light]]'' from taking off in the first place, altering their destinies. Together, the group sends a message to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] on the ship's launch day, warning their future selves of all the dangers that they will face on their journey—though as [[Cyclonus (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Cyclonus]] points out, if it was successful, all the ''good'' they have done on their trip will also not happen. Rodimus cuts off Cyclonus's rant and hands him Whirl's gun: though they cannot travel through time, Perceptor ''can'' teleport them one last time to a location on Cybertron that may hold the key to their salvation.

After Rodimus and Cyclonus have left, the weakened Brainstorm explains his motivations to Rewind: originally, he had created the time machine in order to save [[Quark]], the unrequited love of his life, from dying in [[Grindcore (prison)|Grindcore prison]]. Following the original Rewind's death and Chromedome's emotional breakdown, however, Brainstorm decided to expand the scope of his mission, and decided to save as many lives as possible by preventing the war. Afterward, [[Tailgate (G1)|Tailgate]] asks Rewind to explain exactly where Rodimus and Cyclonus have gone; Rewind tells him they have gone to [[Unitrex]], the city in which the first interstellar starships were created. Pulling up an image of the region from his database, Rewind is struck by the sight of some very familiar fuel quills poking up from below the city...

Rodimus and Cyclonus arrive in a secret facility underneath Unitrex, where they are accosted by a security guard and his pack of [[turbofox]]es. Cyclonus deals with the guard, blasting him with Whirl's gun and locking his spasming form in a nearby room with his pets, while Rodimus speeds on ahead, locating the experimental generator that Perceptor has sent them to find. At Perceptor's direction, using information gained from the ''Lost Light''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s own engines, Rodimus makes a few modifications to the generator to turn it into a functional quantum engine, then plugs the case into it in order to charge it for a jump back to the future. As Cyclonus rejoins him, Rodimus ensures that he has brought Whirl's gun with him—they cannot leave an experimental weapon from Brainstorm's future arsenal lying about in the past, though Cyclonus can't read the scientist's terrible handwriting on the handle, and does not realize he shot the guard with a "[[Sparkeater Gun]]". Adding to the weirdness of the day, the entire complex suddenly disappears around them, shunted into the future by the newly-fashioned quantum engine—little do the pair realize that they have just been responsible for ''creating'' the ''Lost Light'' they will come to call home!

The next day, after everyone has returned to their proper place and time, things get back to normal aboard the ''Lost Light''. Brainstorm is in the brig; Chromedome and Rewind now sleep in the same room once more; everyone enjoys a movie screening and a singalong in [[Swerve's]]; and Megatron retires to his quarters with [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] to silently regard his [[Rodimus Star]]. Rung pays a visit to Perceptor's lab to talk over recent events—Perceptor explains that the crew were ''always'' supposed to travel through time, their actions having always been part of history, and that the alternate "functionist timeline" only came into being accidentally, as a result of his tampering with the time machine's paradox locks. Further, he speculates that that alternate timeline may now actually exists as its own parallel universe...

...which is shown to be the case, as, across time and space, [[Functionist Council]] member [[One-of-Twelve]] is summoned by [[Quark]] with news of a world-shaking discovery made by janitorial 'bot [[Sweep (IDW)|Sweep]]. Dubbing Sweep "alt mode exalted" for his contributions, One-of-Twelve bring the news before the 'bot to whom it pertains: the captive Rung, "The Useless One", held prisoner due to the mystery of his [[alternate mode]]. But that mystery has now been solved, and the threat that the truth of Rung's form poses to the Functionists' regime demands his execution. But as One-of-Twelve holds a gun on him, Rung merely encourages him to pull the trigger, as doing so will only herald the beginning of the end...
==Notes==
===Continuity notes===
*Whirl mentions that this issue takes place in the middle of the "[[Silver Harvest]]", the name given in [[Twenty Plus One|issue #31]] to the discovery of Tyrest's stockpile of Matrix-born sparks, which was itself originally alluded to in [[Remain in Light 3 of 5: The Divided Self|issue #19]].
*The data on Megatron erased by Brainstorm includes his batch code. It was originally established that Megatron had no batch code ''waaaay'' back in [[Chaos Theory Part 1|issue #22]] of the [[The Transformers (IDW)|2009-2011 ongoing series]].
*While not explicitly stated, this issue does provide a possible explanation why Megatron is so adamant about keeping his mode of creation secret. As he's a Point One Percenter spark in a cold constructed body, chances are he wasn't so sure of the answer himself.
*Brainstorm's sparkprint of Rung was taken back in [[World, Shut Your Mouth Part 1: Towards Peace|issue #28]], during the short blackout that showed the audience an x-ray view of Rung and Megatron. We assumed at the time that the blackout itself was the first of what would be many subsequent power outages that accompanied the slow quantum erasure of the ship and its crew, but perhaps it was, as Megatron suggested at the time, simply a power surge caused by the activation of Brainstorm's scanner.
*It was in the same issue that Megatron talked about the Maccadam's brawl during his therapy session, which Brainstorm was able to learn about because he was standing outside the room at the time.
*Brainstorm collected the Point One Percenter spark from Luna 1 in [[Remain in Light 1 of 5: The Fecund Moon|issue #17]]. The fact that 'bots of two spark-types had been able to use Brainstorm's time machine when it was supposed to be coded for just his own type was a lingering question after [[Elegant Chaos Part 1: All Our Parlous Yesterdays|issue #37]], but the revelation that he was carrying a second spark with him is our implicit answer to how that worked.
*At long last, Tailgate is revealed to be the sender of the warning message we heard all the way back in [[Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It|issue #1]], in an attempt to warn the crew of all the terrible things that await them on their journey: Tailgate himself warns "Don't open the coffin" containing the alternate Rodimus's corpse, in [[World, Shut Your Mouth Part 2: Words Hang in the Air|issue #29]]; Rodimus cautions "Don't let [[Legislator|them]] take [[Skids (G1)|Skids]]" to Luna 1, as seen in issue #19; Rung urges "Don't go to [[Delphi]]", where the twin terrors of the [[Decepticon Justice Division]] and [[Pharma (G1)|Pharma]] lurk, from issues [[Life After the Big Bang|#4]] and [[How Ratchet Got His Hands Back|#5]] (and leading to the rescue of [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] and Rung's near-fatal head injury from [[Interiors|issue 6]]); Chromedome guards the mistake he made in [[Remembrance Day|issue #14]], "Do not look in the basement", where [[Overlord (Masterforce)|Overlord]] is imprisoned; and Riptide completes the message by warning them not to trust Brainstorm, but as we saw in issue #1, this part of the transmission was lost.
** Roberts knew all along that the broadcast was from the past and not from the future. That's why it deliberately doesn't say it's a message from the future in that issue! <ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 37:40 to 38:59</ref>
*Brainstorm makes reference to when he was "sort of dead once", as seen in the closing chapters of "[[Dark Cybertron]]".
*Brainstorm revelation that he was in love with Quark clarifies the comment he made back in [[The Gloaming|issue #16]], when he implied to Chromeome that he had lost a Conjux Endura of his own.
*Brainstorm's love for Quark probably explains, to some extent, his fanboyish infatuation with Perceptor beyond his being a rival scientist—he's also a microscope, like Quark, and Quark was always designed to resemble [[Perceptor (Animated)|''Animated'' Perceptor]].
*Quark was captured during the fall of [[K'th Kinsere]], a location brought out several times during Roberts's works; the Decepticons' attack on it was specifically described in issue #31. He was incarcerated in [[Grindcore (prison)|Grindcore]] prison, previously mentioned in "[[Bullets]]".
*Brainstorm's motivations cast new light on certain previous scenes: for example, when he hugs his briefcase to him during the group funeral in issue #16, or when he tells Rewind that he is "not yet" happy, but will be "soon", with his briefcase prominently displayed, in [[Little Victories|issue #22]].
*As is made obvious by the story though apparently not actually realized by any of the characters, Rodimus and Cyclonus do not simply visit a "secret base", but are actually teleported inside the younger version of the ''Lost Light'' itself, ''inside'' said base. The launch pad they find themselves on when the ship disappears is labelled "U1", the previous name of the ship, as revealed in issue #31. Essentially "perfected" by its own future crew, the ship is sent into the future, where it will be found by the NAILs who then sold it to Drift in issue #31. How the NAILs ''knew'' its original name remains a question, though...
*And of course, the unfortunate guard, mutated by the Sparkeater Gun, becomes the [[Sparkeater (creature)|Sparkeater]] that menaced the ship in [[Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things|issue #3]], and has been locked in the chamber it was freed from since the very beginning. The remains of three turbofoxes were found in the cell in issue #3, but presumably these weren't the ''original'' three turbofoxes we see in this issue; in #3, Rodimus speculated that the [[NAIL]]s who would eventually come to own the ''Lost Light'' were feeding the sparkeater the creatures to keep it docile, and issue #31 seemed to back that assertion up by revealing that said NAILs had stolen a brace of turbofoxes from the ''[[Alchemy-Seven]]''. Perhaps they were inspired to use turbofoxes after they saw what the Sparkeater did to the ones it was first locked up with.
*All this would also mean that the poor fellow Whirl shot with the gun last issue also turned into a sparkeater. Could that guy and whatever he got up to after being mutated have been the ''origin'' of the sparkeater myth, in turn inspiring Brainstorm to create the gun in the first place?? James Roberts nods and winks and implies yes!<ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 1:08:00 to 1:08:21</ref>)
*Ravage is revealed to still be on the Lost Light, despite a certain amount of uncertainty being shed on whether he would chose to remain with Megatron or return to the Decepticons back in [[Slaughterhouse Part 2: The Road Not Taken|issue #33]].
*"The Useless One" was originally mentioned in our first glimpse of the "Functionist timeline" in [[The Custom-Made Now - An Elegant Chaos Prologue|issue #35]], and is here confirmed to be that timeline's version of Rung, thought it was fairly easy to deduce at the time. To no-one's great surprise, we here receive our first implication that his alternate mode is part of something much greater...

===Transformers references===
*The pistol Brainstorm trains on Megatron (which is also brandished by One-of-Twelve on the final page) is based on Megatron's original Generation 1 Walther P38 [[alternate mode]], sans the [[fusion cannon]]/scope and stock attachments, but retaining its barrel-extending silencer.
*Megatron was constructed cold in "[[Con Facility 113]]," yet another of Roberts's many references to [[113 (disambiguation)|the number]].
*The title of this issue, "Predestination: An Expert's Guide", parallels the title of issue #30, "Predestination: A Beginner's Guide."
* The harness in which alternate-universe Rung is suspended is a callback to the similar apparatus that contained Overlord beneath the ''Lost Light'' - they are even presented to us in the same quarter-view looking-up angle.

===Real-life references===
*You don't need us to tell you that the 'bots are watching ''{{w|Back to the Future Part II}}''—which is, of course, about characters travelling back in time to put history to rights and avert a terrible alternate timeline from happening, just like this story has been. Tailgate missed out on seeing the {{w|Back to the Future|first one}}, but Cyclonus evidently didn't, since he is able to lead everyone in a singalong of "{{w|The Power of Love (Huey Lewis and the News song)|The Power of Love}}" by {{w|Huey Lewis and the News}}, which doesn't appear (properly) in the sequel. "The Power of love," the song intones, "might just save your life"—a fitting summation of the emotions revealed this issue to have secretly driven the storyline.
*Whirl likes the film well enough, but he'd rather have ''{{w|Alphaville (film)|Alphaville}}''—it's directed by Jean-Luc Godard, whose work he expressed a fondness for in [[World, Shut Your Mouth Part 3: Predestination: A Beginner's Guide|issue #30]].
*Megatron's personal revelations this issue—that the universe would be better off without him—are an intentional flip of ''{{w|It’s a Wonderful Life}}''; that’s why we never see him again in the present until the end.<ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 59:30 to 1:01:11</ref>)

===Errors===
*When spotting the familiar fuel quills of the ''Lost Light'', Rewind says "They looks awfully familiar", rather than "That looks" or "They look".
*Cyclonus urges the others at the bar to swing along with a hearty "Altogether!" rather than a correct "All together!"
*The guy who wrote the last part said swing not "sing"

===Other trivia===
*Roberts has said this story is the most self-referential the comic will get, and he was conscious that showing the origin of the Sparkeater and the ship might be skirting the line. <ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ TransMissions Episode 94 – James Roberts MTMTE Elegant Chaos Interview] 47:44 to 49:39</ref>
*Originally intended for release in February 2015, continuing delays afflicting multiple IDW titles as a result of port closures on the west coast of America saw this issue pushed to the first week of March.
*On the day of this issue's release, "#mtmte" was a trending topic on Tumblr, meaning that the comic was one of the most talked-about topics on the entire platform (itself one of the top 25 internet destinations as ranked by traffic) in the whole world. This is, of course, ''AWESOME.''
*Perceptor notes that the Functionist timeline may function as a starting point for additional alternate timelines. Although the concept of alternate timelines and parallel universes was discounted as impossible back in issue #35 (in spite of contrary evidence within IDW continuity itself such as the [[Dead Universe]] and ''[[Spotlight: Mirage]]''), they are a long-standing concept in Transformers - so it's possible that the Transformers multiverse was created through Brainstorm's briefcase. James Roberts later clarified that the "phenomenally arrogant" subtext was his intention! <ref>[http://www.transmissionspodcast.com/2015/03/transmissions-episode-94-james-roberts-mtmte-elegant-chaos-interview/ Transmissions podcast interview with James Roberts (54:08)]</ref>
*Perceptor mentions that his actions tampering with Brainstorm's time machine accidentally created the conditions for the existence of parallel universes. But if their timeline hadn't started to collapse and the Functionist timeline hadn't started to intrude, Rewind's database wouldn't have been overwritten. If Rewind's database hadn't been overwritten, he wouldn't have had the motivation to destroy Megatron's original spark. Furthermore, the revelation of the Functionist dystopia was also what prompted Whirl to save Megatron's life by transplanting the new spark, preserving the timeline. So that means Perceptor accidentally creating parallel universes must also have been preordained to occur. So the multiverse and all its infinite timelines were always destined to exist. My head hurts.
===IDW Generation 1 continuity===
Two Genericons named [[Sonic (G1)|Sonic]] and [[Boom]] were hired by [[Pharma (G1)|Pharma]] to infiltrate the Autobot medical facility of [[Delphi]] by claiming to be members of the [[Militant Monoform Movement]] on the run from the [[Decepticon Justice Division]]. Professing they were suffering from pain as a result of a [[branched spark]] that proximity to one another would lessen, the pair ensured they were placed in the same cell, where they were able to combine into their alternate mode as a sonic weapon and unleash a blast of weaponized sound formulated by Pharma that caused any Cybertronian who heard it to begin corroding from within. The sonic infection swept the facility, but when [[Ratchet (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Ratchet]], [[Drift (G1)|Drift]] and [[Pipes (G1)|Pipes]] arrived to investigate, Pharma freed the Genericons and ordered them to kill them. Unfortunately for Sonic and Boom, [[First Aid (G1)|First Aid]] chose this moment to successfully reawaken [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] from a years-long coma, and the fighting-mad Autobot proceeded to brutally murder the two Decepticons. {{storylink|Life After the Big Bang}} {{storylink|How Ratchet Got His Hands Back}}
