A '''continuity family''' is {{SITENAME SHORT}}'s term for a group of distinct but closely-related individual [[Continuity|continuities]]. It is not an official term, it is not a declaration of immutable [[canon]], but it ''is'' an extremely useful organizational tool, providing the essence of how we divide one page from another.

For example, the [[The Transformers (franchise)|Generation 1 franchise]] has always comprised multiple separate, irreconcilable continuities; most prominently the original [[The Transformers (cartoon)|cartoon]] and [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|comic books]]. Therefore, there is no single "Generation 1 continuity", but many (many ''many'') related ones. It would be madness to make a separate page for every single timeline-specific incarnation of, say, [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], so we group all of his portrayals across the Generation 1 franchise into the same article, considering them a united "family".

And, just as a single franchise can contain multiple continuities, so can multiple franchises be part of a single continuity. For example, ''[[Beast Wars: Transformers (franchise)|Beast Wars]]'' is a separate franchise from Generation 1, but its storyline draws heavily upon Generation 1 continuity, so it is considered part of the [[Generation 1 continuity family|same continuity family]], and Starscream's appearance in the [[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|''Beast Wars'' cartoon]] is also included on the same page.

Determining where one continuity family ends and a new one begins is an inherently subjective matter and occasionally a cause of debate (see [[#Quirks and gray areas|Quirks and gray areas]] below). One general guideline that fits most cases is that a new family is begun when a series is a) a fresh continuity, b) within a separate franchise, and c) significantly different in cast, theme, style, etc. ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 franchise)|Robots in Disguise]]'' was the first series to break from tradition in all three criteria and therefore form a new family.

Under this organisational scheme, most ''Transformers'' media falls into one of nine categories:

{{collist|3|
*[[Generation 1 continuity family|Generation 1]]
*[[Robots in Disguise continuity family|''Robots in Disguise'']] (2001)
*[[Unicron Trilogy continuity family|Unicron Trilogy]]
*[[Movie continuity family|Movies]]
*''[[Animated continuity family|Animated]]''
*[[Aligned continuity family|Aligned]]
*''[[Transformers: Cyberverse (franchise)|Cyberverse]]''
*''[[Transformers: EarthSpark (franchise)|EarthSpark]]''
*''[[Transformers One (franchise)|One]]''}}

Other series exist that do not clearly fall into one of these (such as the [[Transformers: Go-Bots (franchise)|''Go-Bots'' toyline]], [[Kre-O Transformers (cartoon)|''Kre-O'' shorts]], ''[[Battle Masters]]'', ''[[Transformers: BotBots (franchise)|BotBots]]'', and...er, ''[[Angry Birds Transformers (mobile game)|Angry Birds]]''), but the majority of ''Transformers'' stories reflect one of these "visions" of the [[Transformers brand|brand]]. Though some [[Transformers: TransTech|fan-targeted official media]] has homaged TFWiki's use of continuity families in the form of [[universal stream|universal clusters]], [[Hasbro]] itself notably does ''not'' subscribe to the idea of the brand being divided into "families"—to them, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] is [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] is [[Optimus Prime (WFC)|Optimus Prime]], no matter the differences in style and continuity.
{{main|Generation 1 continuity family}}

The source from which all other ''Transformers'' continuities are ultimately derived, the Generation 1 continuity family was made up of multiple separate continuities from the very start; the [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|Marvel comic]], its [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)#Marvel UK|UK-exclusive side-stories]], the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|original Sunbow cartoon]], and the [[Big Looker Storybook|children's storybooks]] ran side by side from [[1984]], each telling related, but incompatible takes on the same basic story ideas. This continued into the era of the ''[[Transformers: Generation 2 (franchise)|Generation 2]]'' revival in the 1990s.

While the "[[Beast Era]]" marked a significant departure in terms of visuals, cast and story, the events of the ''[[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'' cartoon firmly establish it and its [[Beast Machines: Transformers (cartoon)|sequel series]] as part of the Generation 1 "mythos". The Generation 1 setting and characters have been revived and revisited since the 2000s with comic series from [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] and [[IDW Publishing|IDW]], [[Transformers: Generations (toyline)#Overview|new Generation 1 toys]] and [[The Transformers Trilogy|other]] [[Prime Wars Trilogy#Cartoons|media]]. [[TakaraTomy]], in particular, has focused on expanding its own take on the [[Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Generation 1 cartoon timeline]].

The Generation 1 family is by far the most extensive in the ''[[Transformers brand|Transformers]]'' [[multiverse]], primarily due to being the most iconic iteration of the brand — after all, if you ask someone what [[Optimus Prime (disambiguation)|Optimus Prime]] looks like, most people will picture [[Optimus Prime (G1)|the original]]. Perhaps as a self-perpetuating side effect of this, there's a tendency by fans to view new media or toys as "G1 by default" if it doesn't fit clearly into one of the other families.
{{main|Robots in Disguise continuity family}}

The first ''Transformers'' series to break from the Generation 1 family was the 2001 ''Robots in Disguise'' franchise. Curiously, it originated as ''Car Robots'', a Japanese-exclusive series that — while not clearly placed in any existing continuity — was not treated as any different from [[Beast Wars: Super Lifeform Transformers#Beast Wars II|previous]] [[Beast Wars: Super Lifeform Transformers#Beast Wars Neo|Japanese-exclusive]] series that fit loosely into the Generation 1/Beast Era timeline. However, when Hasbro imported the series to fill time during the production of ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'', the series was treated as a full reboot, with faction leaders Fire Convoy and Gigatron reimagined as new versions of [[Optimus Prime (RID)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Megatron (RID)|Megatron]].

Thanks to the lack of any overt ties to the Generation 1 series in ''Car Robots'', western fans initially assumed that it had ''also'' been intended as a full reboot, and thus there was much confusion when a [[Source:Generation 1 cartoon timeline (Japan)|very complicated timeline]] from the Japanese ''[[Transformers: Kiss Players (franchise)|Kiss Players]]'' franchise explained how the events of the series (and several obscure bits of Japanese media) fit into the Japanese Generation 1 cartoon timeline. Because of this unique overlap, ''Car Robots''-original characters on this wiki have Generation 1 family appearances sorted onto the same pages as their RID counterparts.

The scope of the ''Robots in Disguise'' continuity family is limited, including only a [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 cartoon)|television series]], a short comic story from the [[20th Anniversary Transformers Summer Special]] and many [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001 toyline)|characters who only exist as toys]]. Perhaps as a result of its confusing origins or its relatively low profile, most revisiting of ''Robots in Disguise'' concepts and characters since the series ended have come in Generation 1 series, such as the [[2005 IDW continuity]] and the ''[[Transformers Legends (comic)|Transformers Legends]]'' manga.
===Unicron Trilogy===
[[File:Galactic Heroes Cybertron.jpg|thumb|upright=1.2|[[Pokeformers|You're my best friend, in a world we must defend!]]]]
{{main|Unicron Trilogy continuity family}}

The "Unicron Trilogy" is the first ''Transformers'' continuity designed from the ground up as a full reboot, with ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Transformers: Armada]]'' marking the first time [[Hasbro]] and [[TakaraTomy]] worked together to create a new ''Transformers'' franchise from the start; as such, it includes reimagined versions of classic Generation 1 characters like [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]], [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], and [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]].

The Unicron Trilogy, so named by [[Aaron Archer]] for the key role [[Unicron]] plays in each series, includes the ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'', ''[[Transformers: Energon (franchise)|Energon]],'' and ''[[Transformers: Cybertron (franchise)|Cybertron]]'' toylines and all related media. While both ''Armada'' and ''Energon'' were supported by both cartoons and comic books, the collapse of [[Dreamwave Productions]] meant that the only tie-in comics for ''Cybertron'' were exclusive to the [[Transformers Collectors' Club]], and a short-lived Japanese manga.

Though ''Armada'', ''Energon'', and ''Cybertron'' were all conceived as being part of the same universe by the Hasbro and Takara teams, the [[GONZO|Japanese animation studio]] responsible for the Japanese version of ''Cybertron'' (known as ''Galaxy Force'') ignored this, with ''Galaxy Force'' thus having no ties to the previous Unicron Trilogy cartoons. The English dub of the series did what it could to smooth over continuity and retroactively fit ''Cybertron'' into the timeline of the other two cartoons, and in 2007, Takara used a timeline on their website to retcon ''Galaxy Force'' into being a sequel to ''Legends of the Microns'' (''Armada'') and ''Super Link'' (''Energon'') as initially intended.
{{main|Movie continuity family}}

Perhaps rivaling Generation 1 as the most prominent continuity family, the live-action movie family is built around 2007's ''[[Transformers (film)|Transformers]]'', its sequels ''[[Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)|Revenge of the Fallen]]'', ''[[Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)|Dark of the Moon]]'', ''[[Transformers: Age of Extinction (film)|Age of Extinction]]'', and ''[[Transformers: The Last Knight (film)|The Last Knight]]'', and its prequels ''[[Bumblebee (film)|Bumblebee]]'' and ''[[Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (film)|Rise of the Beasts]]''.

The films are supported by a ''massive'' array of supporting fiction, from books to comics to video games, all of which ''tries'' to follow the films' continuity; however, the disparate tie-in material generally ignores other licensed movie fiction, resulting in multiple "branching" continuities that all use the films as a basis. For obvious reasons, the movies themselves will happily ignore and overwrite elements of these side stories if needed, resulting in tie-in fiction that's at odds with later films — and that's not even getting into [[Transformers: Defiance|tie-in]] [[Transformers: Bumblebee Movie Prequel|material]] based on unfinished versions of the film scripts that the movies end up contradicting.

With the films themselves generally disinterested in exploring continuity between different installments, it has generally fallen to tie-in material to reconcile and smooth over unexplained elements of [[Movie timeline|the timeline]]... though even this proved insufficient when ''[[Transformers: The Last Knight (film)|The Last Knight]]'' and ''[[Bumblebee (film)|Bumblebee]]'' each provided completely contradictory backstories to the original movie. As such, even the film series itself contains multiple distinct continuities. Isn't that ''fun''?

Debuting in late 2007 to capitalize on the launch of the live-action movie, the ''[[Transformers Animated (cartoon)|Transformers Animated]]'' cartoon introduced a new family with a [[Derrick J. Wyatt|distinctive visual style]] and story featuring a [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|young, inexperienced Optimus Prime]] leading a team of Autobots in a post-[[Great War (Animated)|Great War]] setting.

The cartoon lasted for three seasons, supplemented by a [[Transformers Animated: The Arrival|comic miniseries]], a [[Transformers Animated: The Cool|Japanese manga adaptation]], and other [[Transformers Animated (franchise)|ancillary fiction]]. While a success in terms of sales, ''Animated'' ended up a victim of ''Transformers'' cannibalizing itself, with toy retailers more interested in giving shelf space to the better-selling movie series toys... not helped by Hasbro wanting to have a little more control over their IP than they had at the time (with both the movie and ''Animated'' being partially under the control of completely different gigantic corporations and not necessarily needing Hasbro to vet everything they did).

Outside of a [[BotCon 2011|BotCon-exclusive]] [[The Stunti-Con Job|story and toy set]] and a [[Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac|series of reference books]], the ''Animated'' continuity family hasn't been revisited in any major way since the cartoon ended, but it remains a fan-favorite series for its sense of humor and strong characterization.
{{main|Aligned continuity family}}

Debuting in 2010, the "Aligned" continuity family — a name coined by fans based on Hasbro statements — represented an effort by Hasbro to "align" their media output, creating the [[Binder of Revelation]]: a universe bible that all subsequent works, set in a new singular continuity, would be based on. Things didn't exactly turn out this way, however; the necessity of allowing individual creative teams flexibility led to many details not lining up, with the result that the overall "story" only really fits together if you squint.

The Binder of Revelation drew heavily on previous iterations of the brand, attempting to create the "definitive" ''Transformers'' continuity by picking and choosing the best elements from Generation 1, the Unicron Trilogy, ''Animated'', the movies, and more. "Aligned" launched with [[Transformers: War for Cybertron (games)|''War for Cybertron'']] and ''[[Transformers: Exodus]]'' in June 2010, chronicling the origins of the Transformers' war; both would later be followed up with the sequels [[Transformers: Fall of Cybertron|''Fall of Cybertron'']] and ''[[Transformers: Exiles|Exiles]]''. Later in 2010, the [[Transformers: Prime (cartoon)|''Transformers: Prime'']] cartoon debuted the "present-day" story of the Transformers universe with a more serious show focused on long-term storytelling, and ''[[Transformers: The Covenant of Primus|The Covenant of Primus]]'' would later reveal more of the history found within the Binder, including the full story of the [[Thirteen]] original Cybertronians.

Other media in the Aligned continuity family includes the preschooler-focused [[Transformers: Rescue Bots (cartoon)|''Rescue Bots'']] and its sequel [[Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy (cartoon)|''Rescue Bots Academy'']], the [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015 cartoon)|''Robots in Disguise'' cartoon]] that served as a sequel to ''Prime'', and the Japanese-exclusive [[Triple Combination: Transformers Go! {{main|Transformers: Cyberverse (franchise)}}

Debuting in [[2018]], ''Transformers: Cyberverse'' represents a second try at a "brand alignment", like the Aligned continuity before it. Rather than attempting to fit multiple ''stories'' into a single overarching timeline, ''Cyberverse'' is set in a standalone continuity unconnected to any other media; however, it uses variations of the "[[evergreen]]" designs that also appear in Generation 1 and Aligned [[Transformers Authentics|toys]] and [[Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy (cartoon)|media]], and avoids slapping pre-existing names on unrelated [[character]]s, instead making use of a roster of classic ''Transformers'' characters with recognisable designs.

''Cyberverse''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> story is heavily serialised, and draws on material including the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|Generation 1 cartoon's]] backstory, the [[2005 IDW continuity|IDW Generation 1 comics]], and even the [[Binder of Revelation]] — though it diverts from the Binder enough to generally not be considered an Aligned story. The ''Cyberverse'' continuity family centers on the [[Transformers: Cyberverse (cartoon)|cartoon]], supplemented by a [[Transformers: Battlegrounds|video game]], [[Transformers Stop Motion Series|several YouTube shorts]], the online bios, and—most unusually—the yet-to-be-released ''[[My Nezha and Transformers]]'' animated series, which blends ''Cyberverse'' with the characters of the 2003 cartoon ''The Legend of Nezha''.
Debuting in [[2022]], ''Transformers: EarthSpark'' reflects a relative move away from the brand alignment that characterised the Aligned and ''Cyberverse'' continuities. Debuting in [[2024]], ''Transformers One'' is an animated film set on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], primarily drawing upon the now-standard mythology first established in the Binder of Revelation to tell the story of [[Optimus Prime (One)|Orion Pax]] and [[Megatron (One)|D-16]] on pre-war Cybertron. The film originally began as a prequel to the live-action film series in its earliest stages of development, but as time went on, it gradually metamorphosed into its own entity, one that pulls from just as much from other previous incarnations as the live-action films.
*''[[GoBots]]'' — A continuity family built around the one-time rival of the ''Transformers'' brand, centered on the war between the [[GoBot]]ic factions of the [[Guardian (GoBots)|Guardians]] and the [[Renegade]]s. (Nothing to do with [[Go-Bots continuity family|''those'' Go-Bots]].)
*''[[Go-Bots continuity family|Go-Bots]]'' — A continuity family of series targeted at pre-schoolers, centered on the [[Go-Bot (species)|Go-Bots]] of [[Botropolis]] and their adventures in making the universe a better place! (Nothing to do with [[GoBots|''those'' GoBots]].)
*''[[Battle Masters]]'' — A continuity involving rockin', sockin' robots who [[Grimlock (AOE)#Battle Masters|mostly]] look little like any other versions of the characters.
*''[[Knights of Unicron (band)|Knights of Unicron]]'' — A totally metal continuity where the Knights of Unicron are the best dang band on Cybertron!
*''[[Transformers: Shattered Glass (franchise)|Shattered Glass]]'' and ''[[Shattered Glass Animated]]'' — "Mirror universe" versions mainly of the Generation 1 and ''Animated'' continuity families, where up is down, black is white, and [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]] is a baddie.
*''[[Transformers: BotBots (franchise)|BotBots]]'' — A bizarre continuity where the only known Transformers are formerly ordinary household items, brought to life by a cloud of [[energon gas]] released in a shopping mall.
*''[[Transformers: TransTech|TransTech]]'' — A singular universe populated by the [[Transcendent Technomorph]]s, hyper-advanced Transformers responsible for charting and cataloguing the [[multiverse]].
*''[[Transformers Cloud|Cloud]]'' — A universe populated by the [[Autobot#Cloud|Spacetime Police]], a group of Transformers that take a more active role in the wider multiverse, interfering directly to maintain its integrity — for a [[spacetime energy|small fee]], of course.

Characters from side merchandise lines that draw on multiple incarnations of characters from across continuity families, such as ''[[Bot Shots (franchise)|Bot Shots]]'', ''[[Kre-O]]'', and ''[[Construct-Bots]]'' are generally sorted onto their inspirations' pages. The exception is [[Optimus Prime (Kre-O)|certain]] [[Megatron (Kre-O)|major]] [[Bumblebee (Kre-O)|characters]] from ''Kre-O'', who are portrayed as literally swapping between forms based on different incarnations as one would change clothes, making splitting them up functionally impossible.

Characters that originate in [[:Category:External properties|non-''Transformers'' properties]] such as ''[[G.I. Joe (franchise)|G.I. Joe]]'', ''[[Star Wars (franchise)|Star Wars]]'', and ''[[Animorphs]]'' are typically given a single page that covers all their appearances, no matter which ''Transformers'' continuity they appear in.

==Quirks and gray areas==
The concept of a continuity family is not an official one; it was generated by editors of this wiki as an organizational tool. As such, for the bulk of ''Transformers'' fiction, deciding where the lines between families are drawn is a subjective business, balancing both abstract guidelines and practical considerations.

===IDW Publishing===
[[File:Drift2-Lockdown.jpg|thumb|A [[Lockdown (G1)|G1 version]] of an [[Lockdown (Animated)|''Animated'' character]] using a [[Lockdown (ROTF)#Toys|movie series toy design]].]]

Though [[IDW Publishing]]'s 13-year [[2005 IDW continuity|comics continuity]] is officially classed as part of the ''Generation 1'' franchise, there was initially some dispute over whether it should be considered part of that continuity family. Though the cast almost entirely consisted of Generation 1 characters in recognisable designs, the backstory was very different to any prior Generation 1 universe, and many of the characters were portrayed in unique ways; the question of whether or not, for example, the IDW versions of [[Galvatron (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Galvatron]] or [[Thunderwing (G1)#2005 IDW continuity|Thunderwing]] should be considered the "same character" as previous incarnations was a contentious one.

This debate was reignited with the debut of "phase 2" of the IDW continuity, which began bringing in characters like [[Sky-Byte (RID)|Sky-Byte]], [[Airachnid (G1)|Airachnid]], and [[Knock Out (G1)|Knock Out]], all based on characters who'd originated in non-Generation 1 media. In time, this anything-goes ethos carried over to both IDW's [[2019 IDW continuity|rebooted ''Transformers'' universe]] and a plethora of miniseries, leading to taxonomic oddities such as ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'' [[Sureshock (G1)|Sureshock]] appearing in a [[My Little Pony/Transformers: The Magic of Cybertron|''My Little Pony'' crossover comic]], or a new version of ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015 franchise)|Robots in Disguise]]'' [[Riotgear (G1)|Riotgear]] antagonizing [[Hot Rod (G1)|"Generation 1" Rodimus]] in ''[[Transformers: Last Bot Standing|Last Bot Standing]]''.

Ultimately, however, many minor appearances of Generation 1 characters and the incorporation of IDW elements into other G1 toys and media makes it impractical to split it out; it would be absurd, for example, to give a separate page to the IDW version of [[Roadblock (G1)|G1 Roadblock]].

===Live-action films and ''Animated''===
In both the live-action film series and the ''Transformers Animated'' cartoon, much of their casts, both major and minor, are updated versions of classic Generation 1 characters. For this reason, when both series debuted, many considered them analogous to the IDW comics; however, both are far more extensive than the relatively self-contained IDW Generation 1 comics, with each having a wide array of their own tie-in material and their own toylines. This, coupled with stark differences in characterisation, aesthetic and backstory, and both series' increasing deviations from the Generation 1 "default" as time went on, meant that it made far more sense to treat them separately.

And ultimately, simply making use of Generation 1 character archetypes cannot on its own be enough to have a franchise be classed as part of the Generation 1 family. By that metric, few-to-no franchises would fall outside of "Generation 1", which would be an organizational nightmare.
{{-}}

===Aligned, "evergreen", and beyond===
[[File:FOC-GameInformerPrimeBumblebee.jpg|thumb|Not [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]. Not [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]].]]
The "Aligned" continuity, Hasbro's attempt at a grand, unified universe for the ''Transformers'' brand, drew heavily on previous versions of the brand to create its world. However, the flagship piece of media of this new universe, ''[[Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)|Transformers: War for Cybertron]]'', was originally conceived as a Generation 1 cartoon prequel; while using a distinct visual style, the designs are almost all heavily based on and recognisable as Generation 1 characters, and [[High Moon Studios]] even promoted the game as a Generation 1 prequel to games press. Subsequent Aligned media, such as ''[[Transformers: Prime (franchise)|Prime]]'' and ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015 franchise)|Robots in Disguise]]'', stepped further away from strict G1 influence, but it is still very easy to view the games as Generation 1 updates rather than part of the ''Prime'' universe.

This issue recurred with the debut of ''[[Transformers: Cyberverse (franchise)|Cyberverse]]'', which went a step further by not only using Generation 1-inspired designs, but the [[evergreen]] designs actively being used by contemporary Generation 1 media; their characterisation draws heavily on their classic counterparts, and the show's backstory draws on both Generation 1 and Aligned sources, meaning that relatively little of ''Cyberverse'' cartoon is actually unique in the scope of the Transformers brand. From a practical point of view, however, as a new Hasbro-initiated major-media-backed toy franchise with no continuity ties to any previous series, it's easier (and much less page-bloating) to consider it its own family rather than trying to subjectively judge whether it's "close enough".

This approach has also continued into the following ''[[Transformers: EarthSpark (franchise)| EarthSpark]]'' series. While it features ''some'' evergreen-inspired designs (and even a Generation-1-inspired fantasy sequence in its [[Secret Legacy, Part 1|first episode]] to further complicate things) and uses many aspects of the "Aligned" continuity in its backstory, it diverges in significant enough ways, on top of the "new Hasbro-initiated major-media-backed toy franchise" thing, so like ''Cyberverse'' it makes more sense to just treat it as its own thing.

{{-}}

==Official perspectives==
[[File:InvasionPrologue-Rhinox.jpg|thumb|"If we make an overly-convoluted classification system, the fandom won't get absurdly attached to it, right?"]]
The first official media to actively engage with the idea of a ''Transformers'' multiverse was [[Transformers: Universe (2003 franchise)|the 2003 ''Universe'' franchise]], which depicted a [[Universe War|war involving characters from several previous series]]. However, the concept of "families" of ''Transformers'' universes was first introduced in the ''[[Transformers: TransTech|TransTech]]'' franchise from Hasbro licensee [[Fun Publications]], which introduced the concept of [[universal stream]]s: technical, overly-precise "code names" for ''Transformers'' universes that included designations for the "universal clusters" to which they belonged — in essence, a direct in-universe version of and homage to TFWiki's continuity family system.

Though the universal streams were intended to be deliberately unintuitive and detached to represent the distant, aloof attitude of the [[Transcendent Technomorph]]s, some fans ''really'' latched onto them, taking them as gospel and framing their entire view of the ''Transformers'' multiverse around them. Later Fun Publications fiction ''did'' avoid such a strict, divided view of ''Transformers'' lore — ''[[Beast Wars: Uprising]]'', which is classed as a Generation 1 (or "[[Primax]]") continuity, made heavy use of Unicron Trilogy [[Mini-Con]]s as [[Micromaster]]s and brought in characters like [[Strongarm (G1)|Strongarm]] and [[Override (BWU)|Override]]; as well, later [[Ask Vector Prime]] answers tried to emphasise how arbitrary and lacking in inherent meaning the universal stream labels were... for all the good it did. Eventually, the entire universal stream conceit was [[Out of the One, Many|written out]], with the TransTech [[Shroud|losing their ability]] to view the multiverse.

Hasbro itself, meanwhile, has never particularly considered there to be strong divisions between "versions" of the ''Transformers'' brand, particularly since the departure of [[Forest Lee|individuals]] strongly invested in the mechanics of the fictional multiverse; indeed, when asked in [[2017]], brand manager [[John Warden]] indicated that he didn't consider [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Generation 1 Optimus]] to be separate from [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|''Armada'' Optimus]], or even from [[Ginrai (human)|Ginrai]]!<ref>[https://www.seibertron.com/energonpub/transformers-titans-return-product-reveals-news-updates-rumors-leaks-and-more--p1911385.php#p1911385 Excerpt from John Warden interview on Seibertron forums]</ref> This, of course, makes sense for a large corporation like Hasbro — they're here to make toys of Optimus Prime for kids to enjoy, not to worry about whether they fit into imagined categories; and, when not looked at from a wiki organization perspective, [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Sunbow Optimus]] isn't meaningfully more different from ''Armada'' Optimus than he is from [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Marvel Optimus]] or from [[Optimus Prime (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|IDW Optimus]].

(But seriously, John, ''Ginrai''?)

: Cyclonus transforms into a purple Cybertronian fighter craft. Bizarrely, his [[instructions]] list the fact that "Cyclonus' wings are detachable" as a feature. They also suggest to open "trap doors" on the backs of his thighs, giving him backwards knee articulation. Like the other new characters created for ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'', Cyclonus was designed for animation first, and had his toy based on these designs. However, as with the other characters, the toy was based on an earlier design, most notably featuring folded back wings, while his animation model underwent further modifications before being finalized. The earlier design was the basis for [[Cyclonus (G1)#Marvel Comics continuity|the Marvel Comics version of the character]], and also erroneously appeared in a few instances in [[The Transformers (cartoon)|the cartoon series]].

: Another change from preproduction was the orientation of the stickers situated behind his cockpit windows. Right up until the final toy, all samples showed these arranged so that the orange streaks matched up with those on the wing stickers, and the angle of the leading edge matched the curve of the windows; the final instructions rotated them 180 degrees.<ref>{{citesocial|quote=So, to summarise, early mock-ups and pre-production specimens of G1 Cyclonus had mostly handmade stickers and a certain orientation of trapezoidal stickers #1 and #2 off the stickersheet that remained consistent across the box stock photography, catalogues, Toy Fair literature and even the mock-ups and samples themselves. Final stage pre-production samples with almost-final stickers and moulding still shared the same trapezoidal sticker orientation as the earlier mock-ups. For production and retail release, most stickers were updated to feature more distinct detail, but not #1 and #2, they stayed the same as seen in the earliest mock-ups. The instructions, however, now showed a different orientation for stickers #1 and #2 that was then carried forward to the Targetmaster stock photography the following year.|link=https://tfsquareone.blogspot.com/2019/09/hasbro-g1-cyclonus-figure-sticker.html|name=Maz|site=Transformers Square One|title=Hasbro G1 Cyclonus - Figure & Sticker History|year=2019|month=09|day=22}}</ref> Early releases of Cyclonus had his belt and part of his "ears" painted blue, while later releases left those areas unpainted.
He also comes with his [[Targetmaster (technology)|Targetmaster]] partner [[Nightstick (G1)|Nightstick]]. Oddly, Cyclonus's right hand is the only one with a hole to hold Nightstick in, a very rare feature amongst two-handed ''Transformers'' toys. An undocumented feature (in both the Hasbro and Takara versions) is that Nightstick can also mount to either of Cyclonus's wrists by leaving the hands folded in, exposing a tab-slot, a la ''[[Transformers: The Headmasters (cartoon)|The Headmasters]]''... in which Cyclonus wasn't a Targetmaster.
: A redeco of ''[[Transformers: Universe (2008 toyline)|Universe]]'' Cyclonus was released in the "[[Challenge at Cybertron]]" multi-pack along with redecoes of [[Hot Rod (G1)/toys#G1 Series|Rodimus]] and [[Galvatron (G1)/toys#G1 Series|Galvatron]]. This version of Cyclonus, like the ''Henkei!'' figure, is intended to be accurate to the cartoon's colors, though it carries through the concept differently.

: The set was exclusively released in South-East Asian markets by Hasbro Malaysia, but the included version of Cyclonus was later released in the [[Transformers (2010 toyline)|"gold box" ''Transformers'' line]] as a two-pack with the Rodimus redeco.
:This release of the ''Universe'' Cyclonus is a modified version from the Asia market-exclusive "Challenge at Cybertron" 3-pack, replacing his Decepticon sigil with a heat-sensitive [[rubsign]]. His wings are painted a more flat purple compared to the semi-gloss of the Universe "Challenge at Cybertron" release as well as his lower thighs are less purple tinged (matching his upper thighs better). The set also comes with a similarly modified ''Classics'' Rodimus from the "Challenge at Cybertron" set, the Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]] accessory from the 2002 [[Optimus Prime (G1)/toys#NewYearConvoy|New Year Special Convoy]] reissue of Generation 1 Optimus Prime, and "[[Rodimus vs. Cyclonus]]", a new comic book created specifically for this set by [[IDW Publishing]].
*'''Decepticon Set''' (3-pack, 2011)

: Dubbed "Cyclonus Red Purple Clear Version", this [[redeco]] of the ''[[Transformers: Universe (2008 toyline)|Universe]]'' Cyclonus mold (see above) is cast in transparent purple plastics, emulating the scene in ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'' where Cyclonus is created from some dead Decepticon (no, we won't get into that here).

: This version was only available in an [[e-HOBBY]] [[exclusive]] 3-pack with clear-plastic versions of [[Galvatron (G1)/toys#United|Galvatron]], [[Nightstick (G1)#United|Nightstick]], and [[Scourge (G1)/toys#UnitedClear|Scourge]]. Preorders for the set were opened on [[December 13]], 2010, and closed on [[January 11]], 2011, and shipped in April.

: This figure was available with a Galvatron pin and ''[[Macrocosmic Seekers]]'' booklet directly from e-HOBBY, he was also released in Asian countries outside of Japan without said pin and booklet.

: Oddly, and unlike Galvatron and Scourge, Cyclonus's deco is based on the Hasbro "Challenge at Cybertron"/"Battle in Space" release rather than the ''Henkei! Henkei!'' release.

: Part of the fourth assortment of [[blindpacking|blind-bagged]] [[Kreon]] [[Micro-Changer]]s, Cyclonus can be rebuilt into a space jet.

: Unusual for Kreons, there is actually a [[variant|running change]] in Cyclonus's original production run, leading to two distinctly different versions without any kind of packaging change. One version matches the [[stock photography]] on the bag-back (mostly), with a light lavender base plastic and leg-paint, which made him look a ''lot'' like Galvatron. The other is darker purple more matching the [[Cyclonus (G1)#Toys|original Cyclonus toy]]. Initially, the lavender version had only been found in bags marked "'''40131 36'''", while the darker version was found in ''all'' bag-number variations, ''including'' the 40131 batches.

: "Initially" because later releases of Collection 4 —which lack the individual-identifying bag codes— brought the lavender Cyclonus back, but this time with his cuffs painted dark purple to match the stock photography where the original lavender Cyclonus had lavender cuffs. Oy! He also has the 2014 [[retool]]ing to the arms the make them better as studs.

: He uses the [[Inferno (G1)/toys#Kre-O|Inferno]]-style helmet... just like Galvatron does! Awwww.

:Released in the third wave of ''[[Transformers: Generations (toyline)|Generations]] [[Combiner Wars (toyline)|Combiner Wars]]'' Voyagers, Cyclonus is a redeco and retool of ''Combiner Wars'' [[Silverbolt (G1)#Generations|Silverbolt]], transforming into a dark purple Cybertronian fighter craft surprisingly close to his original animation model, given existing mold constraints. He also gains two small tailfins, held in Cyclonus' exposed hands in vehicle mode, which plug into the 5mm holes on Cyclonus' forearms to mimic the original character model's forearm fins. These tailfins can also be used as dagger weapons in robot mode. He also transforms into the torso of [[Galvatronus (CW)|Galvatronus]]; any combination of limb-bots counts as "Galvatronus", regardless of faction.

: Cyclonus includes a silver version of Silverbolt's rifle, which can be held in Cyclonus's or Galvatronus's hands, or mounted underneath Cyclonus's nosecone in fighter craft mode (although it won't insert fully, thanks to the placement of one of the nosecone's screws). The winged rear section of the rifle can be detached and used by Cyclonus as a shield.

: As seen on the photo at the right, the vehicle mode's vertical fins are assembled incorrectly, with the control surface detailing facing forward. This can easily be fixed by popping them off their hinges and flipping them around.

:The Silverbolt mold was also retooled into ''Combiner Wars'' [[Scattershot (G1)#Generations|Scattershot]] and [[BotCon 2016]] [[Sea Clamp#Combiner Wars|General Sea Clamp]].
The translucent nosecone spike is now ''very'' soft, with the consistency of a "Wacky Wall-Walker" toy. Nightstick is absent from this figure, replaced with a translucent version of the [[musket laser]] originally included with ''Generations'' [[Kup (G1)/toys#Generations|Sergeant Kup]], now lacking the ball-jointed [[C joint]] of the original. And for the first time, this mold's left hand has been retooled to have a [[5 mm post|5mm fisthole]], though [[:File:TF-Platinum-Edition-Cyclonus-Stock.jpg|stock photography]] incorrectly shows the original left fist.

:Cyclonus was released as part of 3-pack with [[Scourge (G1)/toys#ArmadaOfCyclonus|Scourge]] and "[[Sweep (G1)#Generations|Decepticon Sweeps]]", named "Armada of Cyclonus". The set ''did'' see a somewhat more widespread release in Hasbro's Asian markets (most notably Singapore) and, more surprisingly, was even officially released in Canada (where it was sold at [[Toys"R"Us]] stores and also made available via [[Walmart]]'s Canadian website, though never sold in stores) and the United Kingdom (where it was available via the UK [[Toys"R"Us]] website). {{toydesigner|[[John Warden]] and [[Evan Brooks]] (Hasbro)}}

:Released to commemorate the 35th anniversary of ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'', ''[[War for Cybertron: Kingdom]]'' Cyclonus is a 7-inch-tall mold that is unprecedentedly accurate to his appearance in the Generation 1 cartoon. His reveal press release describes him as having been reformatted from "[[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]]/[[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]]/Both/[[Life Spark|Neither]]". Mechanical details are sculpted into the seams of his shoulder swivels, visible when his arms hinge at the side. His oxidating laser can be plugged into the top of his jet mode, similar to his ''Universe'' toy. His jet mode can also deploy landing gear at the nosecone and thruster areas.

:In a line that focuses on a more [[Show-accuracy|cartoon-accurate]]-[[scale]], Cyclonus and [[Galvatron (G1)/toys#War for Cybertron: Kingdom|Galvatron]] hilariously appear to have switched sizes, as Galvatron is supposed to be the height that Cyclonus is, and Cyclonus is at the height that Galvatron should be.

:His [[Hasbro]] stock photos are mistransformed, with the hands not hidden away in vehicle mode, and the wings only half-folded into shape behind the shoulders in robot mode. Additionally, the image of his vehicle mode on the back of his packaging shows his Oxidating Laser plugged into a port that doesn't exist.

:If one folds either of Cyclonus' hands into his forearms to reveal the 5mm-compatible thrusters for his vehicle mode, it is possible to attach weapons with a backward-facing 5mm peg onto the wrist-nozzle in a way similar to his ''Universe'' figure. However, his Oxidating Laser lacks the backward-facing peg that would allow the weapon to point forward while pegged in.

:Cyclonus' unpaintable plastic seems to suffer from a very slight [[photodegradation]] in certain conditions, causing it to have a visibly yellowed tone. One can easily tell if this has happened by comparing the color of his gray plastic to the adjacent silver paint.

:Cyclonus comes with a [[Golden Disk (Voyager)|Golden Disk]] card that "[[Source:Golden Disk destinies|reveals a possible destiny of a key character]]", with each character having three possible destiny variants. Cyclonus was later heavily retooled into ''[[Transformers: Legacy#Evolution (2023)|Legacy: Evolution]]'' [[Metalhawk (G1)#Legacy|Metalhawk]].
Surprisingly, the stickers behind his cockpit are designed to match preproduction samples of Cyclonus' toy, as evidenced by the correctly-oriented orange streaks that match the wing stickers.

: There were widespread reports of this piece having loose shoulders, making it difficult to pose it with raised arms. Multiple specimens also surfaced with the two fuselage attachment clips having been molded from two noticeably non-matching shades of purple plastic.

: Cyclonus & Nightstick were revealed on [[Amazon (website)|Amazon]] [[Australia]] prior to their official reveal by only over 12 hours.
**''Accessories'': Stand

: A PVC figurine of Cyclonus was part of the eighth act of [[TakaraTomy|Takara]]'s ''[[Heroes of Cybertron|Super Collection Figure]]'' series in 2002. Each case of twelve PVCs had two Cyclonuses; one in full-color, the other pewter-finish.

: The color version of Cyclonus came with the right leg of the Act's "build-a-figure", [[Scorponok (G1)/toys#Super Collection Figure|Scorponok]]. These parts could be in either full color or pewter, packed at a ratio of six color parts per four pewter parts.

: The pewter version of the figure has a potential problem with connector peg breakage, due to said pegs often getting a layer of pewter paint before being forced into a socket, leading to sticking and tearing. Care should be used when moving or removing the arms; shaving down the socket interior with a thin hobby knife is usually sufficient to fix the issue.
: Cyclonus was later released as part of the third wave of [[Hasbro]]'s ''[[Heroes of Cybertron]]'' line in 2003. This release was cast in transparent red plastic and painted over (in a more lavender tone than the ''SCF'' version's light blue), leaving his eyes and back of his head unpainted to try for a [[light-piping]] effect, though the result ends up on him having a visor. The mold was also modified to have the pointed edges on his horns and wing-tips rounded off [[for safety reasons]].
: He includes a collectible card that renders him in the [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015 franchise)|2015 ''Robots in Disguise'']] styling. :''Snapdragon is a [[Decepticon]] [[Horrorcon (G1)|Horrorcon]] or [[Mercenary]] from the [[Generation 1 continuity family|Generation 1]] [[continuity family]].''
[[File:G1Snapdragon boxart.jpg|upright=1.66|thumb|Surprisingly, mauling Daniel did not make him an instant fan favorite.]]
What [[Blot (G1)|Blot]] does through carelessness, '''Snapdragon''' does with deliberation. He loves nothing more than caring for his unusually sensitive and delicate hide by bathing in putrid grease pits; if those aren't available, the running fuel from his victims' corpses will do. His bouts of animalistic fury and sheer love of destruction would make him an excellent warrior if not for the fact that he's lazy. His personal quarters are littered with alarm clocks shot to fragments by laser fire because Snapdragon just wasn't motivated to kill and maim that morning. His fellow Decepticons know they risk suffering a similar fate if they try to wake him, but often risk it in the hopes of channeling Snapdragon's rage towards the Autobots.

Woe to the Autobot warrior who faces Snapdragon without his beauty rest. However, his laziness and appalling personal habits make him unwelcome among his fellow Decepticons, except for the equally thuggish [[Apeface]]. He is [[Binary bonding|binary bonded]] with [[Krunk]], who somehow makes him even worse. In certain universes, he is instead affiliated with the [[Mercenary|Mercenaries]].

Snapdragon was one of the Decepticon animals who attacked [[Autobot City (G1)|Autobot City]] as a diversion, so that the [[Clone (subgroup)|Decepticon Clones]] could steal the Key to the [[Plasma Energy Chamber]]. After a quick game of "kick the can" with [[Freeway (G1)|Freeway]], Snapdragon retreated and joined [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]'s unit in journeying to the Chamber, where the Sweeps leader fouled up and lost the Key to the Autobots. [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] sent Snapdragon and the others with Scourge, as they tracked the Autobots who recovered the Key to [[Nebulos]]. While there, Snapdragon caught [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]]'s hand in his jaws, prompting [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]] to leap to her defense. Snapdragon then mauled Daniel, leaving him for dead as the Decepticons cleared out with their prisoners. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 1}}
"Good point. Let's be friends."]]
Unfortunately, the mauling of Daniel led the remaining Autobots to develop [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmasters]], and they rescued their friends from Snapdragon's Decepticons. When his leaders made a deal with the evil [[Hive (G1)|Hive]] to counter the Autobots' advantage, Snapdragon gave up his head (well, one of them) to be [[Binary bonding|binary-bonded]] to the Nebulan known as [[Krunk]]. {{Storylink|The Rebirth, Part 2}}

After the Decepticons recovered the Key, they fled Nebulos and returned to Cybertron in [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], the massive battle platform created by the Hive ruler, [[Zarak (G1)|Zarak]]. Although they reunited with Galvatron, the Decepticon Headmasters and Targetmasters were forced to contend with an Autobot battle platform of equal ferocity...[[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]]. Eventually, Snapdragon and the Decepticons were trapped on board Scorponok when an explosion of plasma energy rocketed them out into space, leaving Cybertron behind. {{Storylink|The Rebirth, Part 3}}
Snapdragon and Apeface were loyal followers of Scorponok on the planet [[Master (planet)|Master]]. Before the Headmasters of Evil abandoned Master to join the Decepticons, the duo were captured and banished into the depths of space by [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress]] and his allies for their crimes. Sometime later, they were found and contacted by [[Galvatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Galvatron]], who brought them into the Decepticon ranks. Snapdragon and Apeface accompanied "[[Sixshot (G1)|Galvatron]]" to [[Shangri-La Island]] for the peace talks with [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Spike Witwicky]]. Fighting broke out after the Autobots traveling with Spike learned Galvatron was a fake, and the Decepticons were planning to attack other energy storages in the universe. {{storylink|Daniel Faces His Biggest Crisis Ever!!}}

[[File:Horrorcons Daros.jpg|thumb|left]]
Snapdragon and Apeface joined Galvatron on his trek throughout the universe for more energy and quickly became his favorite warriors. When they invaded the beehive world of [[Hive (planet)|Hive]], Galvatron took Sixshot and the Horrorcons with him and just told the other Headmasters to keep a light on for them. {{storylink|Fight to the Death on Planet Hive!!}} They were also active on the [[Twin Star]] planets, searching in vain for more energy on [[Twin Star|Sperity]] when the Autobot Headmasters arrived. {{storylink|Battle for Defense of the False Planet}} On [[Daros]], Apeface and Snapdragon were Galvatron's guests as he met with the corrupt governor, and they later joined Sixshot in a fight with the Headmasters. They were doing okay until [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] and friends pulled out a 50-foot gun. It...didn't go well after that. {{storylink|Find MegaZarak's Weak Spot!!}} On the [[Pirate Planet]], the Horrorcons helped the [[Clone (subgroup)|Decepticon Clones]] recover the skull key from [[Fastlane]] and [[Cloudraker (G1)|Cloudraker]]. Snapdragon was also involved in Galvatron's efforts to use the key and raid the pirates' pyramid. {{storylink|Mystery of the Space Pirate Ship}}

[[File:Horrorcons Doublecross.jpg|thumb]]
As the Decepticons returned to Earth, Snapdragon and Apeface began working for Sixshot on Earth. They were assembled alongside the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]] and [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]] to attack an Autobot energy facility in [[Florida|Miami]]. The duo fought the [[Monsterbot (G1)|Monsterbot]] named [[Doublecross]], although he was almost too busy arguing with himself to notice. They later traveled to Autobot City and picked a fight with [[Raiden]], preventing him from entering the battle between Sixshot and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Ultra Magnus]] that led to the Autobot City Commander's death. {{storylink|Ultra Magnus Dies!!}} Sixshot continued to employ Snapdragon and Apeface's services on Earth, as the Decepticons unleashed five simultaneous attacks on Autobot outposts on the planet. {{storylink|The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg}}

[[File:Horrorcons are bad guards.jpg|thumb|left]]
As Scorponok abandoned Earth in favor of conquering [[Master (planet)|Master]], Snapdragon was one of his many troops seen attacking the planet's fortifications. After the Autobots arrived on Master, Apeface and Snapdragon were triple-teamed by the new [[Targetmaster (technology)|Targetmaster]]s. Perhaps not considering the Horrorcons worthy of exerting their new powers, [[Pointblank]] and the Targetmasters spent the whole battle unarmed and in [[alternate mode|vehicle mode]], and still royally smacked the chips out of the two Decepticons. {{storylink|Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2)}} When the Decepticons kidnapped [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]], the Horrorcons stood guard outside the [[Scorponok (G1)|MegaZarak]] base. In vehicle mode, Chromedome and Danny zoomed right past them and up the ramp into the headquarters. Considering the rescue mission continued unmolested from then on, apparently Snapdragon and Apeface decided it was just a sudden wind that knocked them on their skidplates. {{storylink|The Master Sword Is in Danger!!}} Later, while Scorponok was finishing the final touches on his [[Zarak Shield]], Snapdragon and Apeface went with Sixshot on a diversionary patrol to keep the Autobots busy. {{storylink|The Zarak Shield Turns the Tide}} They also battled the Autobots on the asteroid [[Pallas]] while MegaZarak was undergoing repairs. {{storylink|Duel on the Asteroid}}

[[File:Horrorcons Trio Formation.jpg|thumb]]
Snapdragon and Apeface returned to Earth with Scorponok for his final scheme to annihilate the planet using [[Death Tower]]s made of [[crysmagnetal]]. As the Decepticons finished preparations for their fourth tower in Egypt, the Battleship Maximus arrived to put in an appearance. [[Weirdwolf (G1)|Weirdwolf]]'s trio was the first to intercept the battleship and engage the enemy, but Apeface and Snapdragon were quick to follow. Unfortunately, Weirdwolf was leading his men in a rather bizarre and unstable totem pole maneuver, which only got worse after the Horrorcons hopped on top of [[Mindwipe (G1)|Mindwipe]]. At that point, Fortress simply hit the gas, causing the "tower of power" to topple over the side. Snapdragon was also present at the final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons at the North Pole. {{storylink|The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 2)}}
====''The Headmasters'' comic====
Apeface and Snapdragon searched for a weapon of unbelievable power known as the [[Charge Arrow]]. Equipped to fire only a single shot, the Charge Arrow was still highly coveted due to its ability to harness countless amounts of energy. They located it at the [[Tower of Omega]] on a distant planet, but were opposed by [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] and [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]]. Chromedome tried to wield the Charge Arrow against the Horrorcons, but to their delight he failed to make it work properly. Filled with a sense of triumph, Apeface and Snapdragon mercilessly beat the Autobot Headmaster before advancing on Daniel. Snapdragon was a Triple Changer working for [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. He participated in a raid on an Autobot city, leading to its incineration and the capture of several of its inhabitants. As the Decepticons marched their captives towards their doom in the [[smelting pool]]s however, they were ambushed by a squadron led by [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] and forced to retreat. {{storylink|Ring of Hate!}} Shortly after, the Decepticons were suitably perturbed when their chief opponents suddenly vanished off the face of the planet. They eventually found their enemies when Lord [[Zarak (G1)|Zarak]] of [[Nebulos]] sent a [[Unspace|subspace]] message to Cybertron, asking for help in ridding his world of the Autobots. Snapdragon and the others arrived on Nebulos, ready to destroy their enemies and plunder the planet for resources, taking Zarak and his band of followers prisoner in the process. In battle, Fortress Maximus and his fellow warriors drove off Scorponok's crew with their new [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmaster]] powers. {{storylink|Broken Glass!}} The Decepticons went on to rampage on Nebulos, but a group containing the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]] and the Horrorcons were sent fleeing by the Autobot Headmasters and the [[Technobot (G1)|Technobots]]. Realizing the Headmasters' superiority in combat, Scorponok arranged a deal with Zarak to [[binary bonding|binary bond]] his warriors with the captive Nebulans. Snapdragon was binary bonded to Zarak's personal bodyguard, [[Krunk]]. The Autobots and Decepticons again battled, with the Autobot Headmasters losing the rematch. {{Storylink|Love and Steel!}}
''When the Autobot Headmasters attempted to rescue the Autobot Targetmasters from the Decepticons, their evil counterparts were sent out after them to feign a defeat, and lure them into an ambush helmed by Scorponok. During the initial fight, Apeface and Snapdragon chased [[Highbrow (G1)|Highbrow]] through the air, until the latter was shot down by [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]]. Snapdragon then assumed his beast mode to chomp down on Chromedome, only to get blasted by Highbrow and crumpling to the ground. The rest of the Decepticons were shortly thereafter "defeated," allowing Scorponok to eventually corner the Autobots within the [[Fortress of Despair]].'' {{Storylink|Worlds Apart!}}
''Snapdragon later watched Scorponok in a faux duel against Fortress Maximus; a diversion set-up so that the Decepticons could steal a fuel convertor. While Optimus Prime's squad team explored the geothermal power plant, Snapdragon ambushed them. He dropped from the ceiling in his dragon mode and transformed to [[robot mode]], giving his thanks to the Autobots for coming, but told them it was time for them to go home. Determined to stop the Decepticons, the Autobots soundly defeated Snapdragon. The Headmaster decided to leave while he was still functional, Snapdragon transformed to his jet form and fled the power plant. Snapdragon later reappeared for a rematch with the Autobot squad in a valley where the Autobots had detected an SOS signal. He lost again. He tried again one last time before they reached ELTA. He still lost.

====Decepticon story====
Snapdragon was a member of a team that Megatron sent to investigate a mysterious UFO that was spotted in the area of Zel Samine. Something caused the team to lose contact with the main Decepticon forces, and they found out that they could not leave the planet, as Zel's sun, Paradius, emitted electromagnetic rays that was harmful to them. Unable to contact Megatron and with no way to leave the planet safely, Snapdragon and the others scattered across Zel.

When the Decepticon forces went to Zel in order to investigate, they found Snapdragon at the Jaad wind power plant in his dragon mode. When he spotted them, he expressed relief at having found his friends, and transformed to robot mode. The Headmaster Decepticon complained about how it took so long for him to find his fellow Decepticons, explaining that fighting Autobots on his own was hard. Megatron was pleased to see Snapdragon, telling him that it time for him to rejoin the Decepticon forces. Snapdragon promised that he would and saluted his leader. {{storylink|The Transformers (PS2)|The Transformers}}
Snapdragon has been an outsider from day one, never really comfortable with factions and causes, and though his monstrous appearance and 'Horrorcon' tag (given him rather than adopted) marked him as material for the Decepticon forces, he preferred to feather his own nest as a mercenary-for-hire.

Vain and highly focused on his own well-being/structural integrity, Snapdragon decided that if he was going to risk his precious hide it was going to be for reward and personal profit rather than any perceived 'field of combat' glory. A triple-changer, Snapdragon is an adversary to be reckoned with in any of his three forms.

Snapdragon cut ties with the Decepticons as soon as he could safely do so, namely by proving his worth to Megatron as an outside and independent contractor first and foremost.

Though prone to bouts of animalistic fury and carousels of destruction, what really motivates Snapdragon is the bottom line: what's in it for me. If the price is right, he'll fight alongside Autobots, Decepticons, Quintessons or anyone for that matter (often at the same time). It's a testament to his skill and sheer combat prowess (as well as his status as a triple-changer) that Megatron tolerates Snapdragon's vain and self-interested nature.
==Notes==
*One of the many confusing glitches in "[[The Rebirth]]" is the fact that, while Krunk and Spasma were clearly designed to transform into both the robot and animal heads of their partners, the Horrorcons retained their [[beast mode]] heads even when their Nebulan partners were separated from them.
*According to [[The Transformers (PS2)|Atlus's ''Transformers'' video game]], Snapdragon's reptilian [[alternate mode]] is, in fact, a [[dragon]].
*In the Japanese ''[[Transformers: The Headmasters (cartoon)|The Headmasters]]'' series, Krunk does not exist as a separate entity from Snapdragon; like all Headmasters, the large robot is just a lifeless [[transtector]] body controlled entirely by the head unit. While the toy of Snapdragon's head unit was referred to as "Krunk" when separated from the larger robot body, the head unit was not referred to by this, or any, separate name in the cartoon.
*In the same Spanish dub, he calls himself "el dragón indestructible" (the indestructible dragon).
*An early version of the Snapdragon toy can be seen in [[Commercial/Generation 1#Horrorcons|the commercial for the Headmaster Horrorcons]]. While the final version has solid color bars, this version sported striped readout bars.
Then Snapdragon presents himself as "Ozela", after which both the narrator and Chromedome call him "Zela". Later, Hardhead calls him "Zedda", and finally, Galvatron calls him "Zela" again. This would seem to make "Zela" his official name, since it's used the most frequently.</ref>
