Side Burn pretends to be Dion to pick up tail.

Synopsis
In a bar on Cybertron, an Autobot has unloaded his pain on supportive audio receptors. He recalls his time as a dock worker on storage yard 67, innocent times with friends like Orion Pax and Ariel. Then came the horror of watching their murder at the hands of Megatron, minutes before experiencing his own death.

The Autobot remembers his reawakening, his reprieve from eternity, and a second chance. Rebuilt from the ground up, he was now a soldier, fighting a war. He notes the cruel, cyclical nature of existence. He made new friends and rebuilt his life, only to see it all shatter again in the cold face of the enemy. Such is the fate of Dion, last survivor of the Elite Guard.

Oh, except this isn’t Dion telling Dion’s story. This is Side Burn trying to use Dion’s tragedy to score with some bar chicks.

After he exposes the ruse, Prowl yanks Side Burn out before his angry new acquaintances can have at him. Prowl is aghast at Side Burn’s lack of decency and reminds him that impersonating an Elite Guard is a felony. For now, though, both Autobots have greater duties to attend.

Meanwhile, at Deathsaurus’s Lair, Starscream reports that the Combaticons' mission is a success: The Elite Guard have been destroyed. However, Starscream is concerned about the Combaticons being allowed into the Decepticon ranks, claiming they are only interested in furthering their own power and will betray him the first chance they get.

Deathsaurus assuages Starscream’s fear, telling him that such ambitions are what make them the perfect Decepticons. They're what separates them from the “stagnation and complacency of the Autobots”.

Preparing for their return, Starscream orders Lyzack to ready the medical bay, paying her some condescending flirtations in the process. While Lyzack is demure toward her commander, she harbors resentment in secret.

Back at the Citadel, Magnum gathers the remaining members of the Elite Guard, including the real Dion, to reassure the Autobot High Council that the Guard is still in operation. Their plans are halted by the assembly in the auditorium, with Optimus Prime accepting his position as leader of the new Autobot Military.
*The opening page recounts some of the events of "War Dawn." Though we knew these events were in Dion's backstory, this is the first time we've seen them (and Dion's pre-Elite Guard body) in this continuity.
*In an odd case of passing the torch, the backstory of 2010's TFCC free exclusive is told by 2011's TFCC free exclusive.
*This is the first fictional appearance of both Cop-Tur and Road Rage.
*The red waitress Transformer that Side Burn is trying to pick up looks like T-AI but is not T-AI. She's only supposed to look like T-AI. We are silly for thinking she's supposed to be T-AI.
*Like Side Burn's Robots in Disguise counterpart, he's berated by his universe's Prowl for being a good-for-nothing doofus.
*Similar to the Cybertronian altmodes seen in the first episode of the original cartoon, Prowl's robot mode still looks like it transforms into a Datsun, but his trans-form is a vehicle that looks completely different.
*Both Ironhide and Ratchet are shown in their Descent into Evil bodies, as Wings of Honor continues to feature the 2005 exclusives until someone finally buys the last few sets on the Club store.

Fiction
TransTech
After a B.U.T.T-related incident sent Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Sari Sumdac to Axiom Nexus, Prime and Sari were arrested for being a Prime and holding a mystic McGuffin, respectively, both of which (along with being a Megatron and soliciting) are strictly prohibited in Axiom Nexus. Prime and Sari were taken away for an exceedingly boring seventeen hours of "processing". When they eventually left, they encountered Shockwave, a Third Rank subcommander from the Menacing and Foreboding Sciences Division of the Axiom Nexus Military Intelligence Branch. He took the two away to perform some <s>evil</s> morally ambiguous experiments on them, including a routine Matrix check. It sounded somewhat uncomfortable from the awkward noises Optimus Prime made while it was being performed.

When Bumblebee, Flareup and "Joe" came to save them, Joe revealed he was actually Megatron and used Sari's key to bring several machines to life as his new army. The Autobots tried to get the new army to not work for Megatron by convincing them that, now that they were alive, they'd need to go through what Prime and Sari had suffered, including the "processing" and the routine Matrix check. Bee in the City

Things continue to go downhill for the Autobots, as Megatron holds Ultra Magnus hostage.

Synopsis
Trapped underwater in Optimus Prime's trailer, Spike is unconvinced about the Autobot's supposed ability to manufacture oxygen to keep the men alive. Spike then begins lamenting about being unable to contact his sister to his equally trapped Skywatch compatriots. As he says this, ocean water comes pouring through the gaps in the trailer.

Presently, Spike awakens in a sweat in Prime's cab, no longer underwater. After Joe Henderson asks bout the health of his commanding officer, Spike comments that it's going to take some time for his brain to stop reliving their recent aquatic plight. Composing hismelf, Spike orders Henderson to check for communications from the Skywatch base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Joe does so, and sees that in addition to the expected offline distress call, there is another message encoded underneath that Prime is going to want to see.

The message plays, and a projection of Megatron appears, greeting Prime, who the Decepticon tyrant knows will still be alive to receive this message. The same can not be said of some of the Autobot troops, notably Ultra Magnus, and Skywatch personnel mustered against Megatron. Megatron ends the message not by threatening to kill Prime, but to destroy him, stating that the Autobots will know the difference. After Optimus verifies that the message came from near a population center, the Autobots and Skywatch personnel roll out, despite the ammo shortages, power depletion and fatigue affecting all of them.

Outside of Albuquerque, Brawn is forced to abandon his prisoner, Starscream, and take his wounded ally Thundercracker to get repairs from Ratchet. Not far away, Prime and his group of Autobots rendezvous with Megatron and Soundwave. Megatron tells Prime to lower his weapons as they can do no harm to the Decepticon leader's new form. Megatron then gloats that in the city, there are 46 people armed with weapons derived from his previous body, and hundreds more scattered across the planet. Optimus dismisses these people as renegades that mean nothing and claims they Cybertronians can learn much for the humans, an idea that Megatron scoffs at. Megatron claims that the only things the Autobots will learn is how they've brought ruin to themselves. Prime asks if this is how it's always going to be, a philosophical disagreement and then the punching starts. Megatron answers no, this time things have changed. rather than kill Prime, he wants to destroy him. To this end, Megatron had dumped the wounded and incapacitated Autobots in the city fifteen minutes earlier.

Knowing that if his troops take on non-military humans in their own cities they'll never be accepted on Earth, Prime sends Spike and Campologno to find his cohorts, ordering Jazz to transport them as he's the fastest of the group. Prime admits to Megatron that he doesn't trust all humans, but he does trust Spike.

Driving through the city, Spike hears via the radio that Megatron dumped the wounded Autobots on a school playground. At the playground, there are two men with Megatron-derived guns aiming at the Autobots. Several policemen with regular sidearms have the Megatron-gun wielders in their sights. Gears is trying to get the humans to stand down so that nobody on either side gets hurt, but the Autobot's message isn't getting through. Spike pulls up in Jazz, disembarks and tells the police that he's taking operational command and that the first priority is evacuating the area so that no people get hurt. An officer on the scene ignores Spike and orders the assembled police to hold their fire, despite protestations from a wounded elderly fellow officer.

Back outside the city, Megatron is telling Prime that he can feel the renegade humans getting ready to fire on the Autobots. This leads Prime to conclude that he Decepticon hasn't left this to chance and must be communicating somehow through the Cybertronian weaponry. Prime charges up his ion blaster. Megatron reminds Optimus that it won't hurt him. Optimus knows and blasts Soundwave through the head, deactivating both the Decepticon communications officer and the signals broadcasting into the Megatron-guns. Megatron is predictably enraged, and threatens to destroy Prime's spark with his bare hands. Megatron stops himself, statign that while he may have lost one soldier, Prime is going to lose everything. With that statement, Megatron then scoops up Soundwave's body and leaves.

Back in the city, the gun wielders are a little disoriented now that the "voices" have stopped. They are subsequently disarmed and detained rather easily. However, the policeman who gave the order to hold fire earlier now has one of the Megatron-guns and says that while the renegades may have been insane, they were not wrong, and points the Megatron-gun at Bumblebee. Bumblebee tries to reason with the man, but an impatient Jazz disobeys Prime's order to stand down, transforms and creeps up on the situation. Right as the man goes to squeeze the trigger on the Megatron-gun, Jazz fires his photon rifle at the human, engulfing him in flames. A horrified Bumblebee asks a shaken Jazz what he just did...

Errors
* Optimus is the only Autobot to have faction symbols on page 3.
* The first panel of page 12 seems to be either missing a dialog balloon before Megatron says" Or you can..." or that "Or" is an extra word that needed to be deleted.
* Blurr, Tracks, and Windcharger are mysteriously absent in the group that Megatron leaves on the school playground, even though were seen last issue.
*On Page 12, Campologno is mis-spelled as "Campolongo"
* On page 14, third panel, Silverstreak's shoulder is mistakenly colored orange.
* And on the subject of colors, in the pages colored by Andrew Dalhouse, Jazz's visor is G1 blue, but in the pages colored by Romulo Fajardo, they're colored like his movie counterpart's. Also, Red Alert's helmet is colored red (like in the cartoon), whereas the previous Earth-based story had him with a black helmet (his figure).

Items of note
* Burning Chrome is the name of a 1982 short story (and later written short story collection) by William Gibson.
* Red Alert is seen with Prime's team from Korea, while Wheeljack is nowhere to be found. It's possible the Korean unit reconnected with the other Autobots on Earth (besides those with Ultra Magnus) between this issue and the last, but this isn't clearly indicated from the context.

An officer on the scene ignores Spike and orders teh assembled police to hold their fire, despite protestations from a wounded elderly fellow officer.

Quotes

And congratulations to "Alientraveller" for doing the right thing and nuking it. --Peter Damian 11:35, 7 March 2011 (EST)
:Wow, talk about an overkill reaction from all of you. Or maybe not, I get the feeling I might have not entirely phrased it well in that one sentence, so let me elaborate.
:The sentence that Override Prime is the first female Prime in Transformers history bugs me, because it implies that she's some kind of milestone figure. She is not. She is by far not the first female leader figure in Transformers (how about Cybertron Override, for starters?) and she's also not actually a "Prime" in the sense of the word as it is usually understood ánd used in the sentence. Far as I can make out for TFA, the writers wanted to be able/had to use the name "Optimus Prime", but also wanted to make the lead character one of those young-uns-growing-up types rather than the fullfledged leader the character usually is. Hence, the rank "Prime" became something less than in other franchises, so little that graduation isn't even a requirement. It would have been sexist if absolutely no female Primes would have existed in Animated with such standards (and for that matter, a potential Prime, like Elita-1 once was, counts), so Override is a necessity rather than something praise-worthy.
:I mean, let's face it, the odds of a female Prime existing in a franchise/continuity where being a Prime is important and the character would eventually have leaderish-legendary-ish impact on the story? Not going to happen any time soon. Unless you count Cybertron Override who is semi-technically a Prime.
:I wanted to get rid of the note entirely because it has no value. It implies something noteworthy when it only would have been noteworthy if Override (and Elita-1) didn't exist. That's why I added the line - to poke fun at an uncomfortable truth nobody in particular is responsible for, which makes it all the tougher to get some actual improvement.
:I'm not sure how wise it is to add this to my case, but there's also the little matter that Japanese fiction's attitude towards women gets mercilessly dissected on various of the wiki's pages, even when from context I feel there's a rationale behind it that at worst only is partially misogynistic. Yet when Western fiction pulls stunts like this, it is barely allowed to be mentioned or complained about. I don't think I find that all that fair. The Decepticons have a mysterious new way to track the Autobots' movements, and the heroic robots must find out what it is before they run out of the resources they need to keep themselves functional.

Summary
Supplies of Cybertronian materials like cybernite necessary to repair damaged Autobots are running low in the city of Metroplex, and the Autobots are unable to return to Cybertron to replenish them. Kup recalls a battle fought in a valley on Earth that left wreckage strewn all around, and with Ultra Magnus’s permission, leads a squad to investigate, hoping to find any useful materials. While searching, however, they are attacked by a squad of Decepticon jets, but manage to force them back by firing upon them from the narrowest portion of the gorge, where the flying Decepticons cannot reach.

Concerned as to how the Decepticons became aware of their movements, Ultra Magnus has the Aerialbots investigate the possibility of a new Decepticon surveillance system. The team fail to locate anything from the air, and merge into Superion to gain even greater height. Reaching the fringes of space, the super robot picks up a faint radar signal—the Aerialbots have just discovered Decepticon Space Station Argon, one of three Decepticon spy satellites able to view the entire Earth at once.

Ten hours later, Soundwave completes and activates the station’s refraction shield to conceal it from prying Autobot eyes, specifically those of Cosmos, who has been dispatched into space to investigate. Cosmos does, however, detect the radio transmissions running between the stations and the Decepticon base. Using Cosmos’s recordings, Hound is able to deduce what the villains are up to, and Kup and Spike put together a plan to stop them.

After ten days of construction work, the Autobots complete an electrical transmitter that unleashes a megavolt charge into the atmosphere, generating a display of Northern Lights that blows out the Decepticons’ radio transmissions. Hound poses as Soundwave and sends transmissions to space stations Argon, Krypton and Xenon, instructing them to relocate to new co-ordinates. Galvatron can only watch as the three space stations, invisible to each other due to their refraction shields, collide and explode, raining down all the Cybertronian materials the Autobots will need for a long time.
Notes
Errors
*Kup speaks of a battle on Earth that he participated in when he was a “young Autobot,” which really doesn’t make any sense at all.
*As in previous Ladybird books, the Autobots place a heavy emphasis on keeping their existence secret from humans, to the extent that they only leave to conduct their search of the valley after dark. And yet... they’re now living in Metroplex. A Transformer city isn’t going to draw some attention?
*In one illustration the Aerialbots look a lot like the Decepticon jets from behind.

Transformers references
*Beginning with this book, Optimus Prime and Megatron are replaced as leaders of their respective factions by Ultra Magnus and Galvatron. While the story itself occurs when they are already established as commanders, the introductory blurb prior to the title page explain this shift in command with the following:

:"Leaders come and go. Galvatron travels back from the 21st century to take over from Megatron, commander of the Decepticons. Then the strange disappearance of Optimus Prime leaves the Autobots without a leader, and Ultra Magnus arrives from Cybertron to take his place, as the Autobots’ new commander."

:These events are taken from the early stages of the Marvel UK serial, Target: 2006. Things were back to normal by the time that story ended, of course, but that doesn’t seem to have happened in the Ladybird universe. Note, however, that no explanation is offered for where the other new post-1984 characters come from, having not appeared in any of the previous books.

Misellaneous trivia
*This story was also released as a Talk and Read audiobook which included music and sound effects.
*Dirge is depicted with a non-conehead, in toy instruction accurate form.
*In this story Cyclonus and Scourge are treated as two new Decepticon jets under Starscream's command, seemingly replacing Thundercracker and Skywarp.
