While the great race kicks into high gear on Velocitron, Bud and Lori go undercover on Earth, and Starscream recruits a new Decepticon.

Synopsis
On Velocitron, the great race for the Planet Cup has finally begun! Hot Shot, Override and Dirt Boss battle it out for the lead, while the other Autobots keep an eye on Crumplezone and Ransack. Optimus Prime blocks the two goons' path, while Red Alert and Landmine watch them from behind. The two trouble-makers allow the Autobots to pass...but only so they can fire on them from behind! The explosions catch Hot Shot's attention, but Prime encourages him to leave things to the other Autobots and for him to focus on winning.

Video of the race is transmitted to the Autobots Earth, where it proves to be the only entertainment available for Bud, who is caught in a traffic jam in the city, having been sent there on a mission with Lori and the Recon Mini-Con Team by Vector Prime. Bud is not happy to be in the noisy, cramped city, but Lori is thrilled to be back in her element. Once they get out of the traffic jam, Jolt leads the team to a university campus to search for a strange gear-shaped artifact, but when they try to sneak inside, a security guard chases after them.

Back with the race, Ransack transforms to robot mode and leaps on top of Crumplezone, using his new position to launch a spring that hooks onto Optimus Prime's rear end. The spring catapults Ransack ahead of the Autobots, where he unleashes a smokescreen that allows Crumplezone to sneak up to join him. The pair then switch positions, with Crumplezone riding on top of Ransack! They draw up level with Hot Shot and Dirt Boss, and are able to cause the two racers to crash into each other, allowing them to pull ahead. Hot Shot recovers from his spin first, and gives chase.

Also watching the race from Earth are Starscream and Thundercracker, who are soon contacted by Megatron. When Megatron instructs Starscream to go to Velocitron and aid Crumplezone and Ransack, Starscream refuses point-blank and Megatron silently terminates their communication links. Thundercracker is shocked at his actions, but Starscream intimates that it is time for them to start making some decision for themselves, and their first one is to approach the civilian Autobot, Mudflap. A fight immediately breaks out between Thundercracker and Mudflap, but Starscream steps in to stop the brawl and offers Mudflap membership in the Decepticons. Unable to fathom humans and discontented with life on Earth in general, Mudflap is swayed by Starscream's honeyed words and agrees. Switching his symbol to a Decepticon insignia, Mudflap hops aboard Thundercracker and is taken back to the fire dimension, leaving Starscream to cackle to himself at the beginning of the "fall of Megatron".

Meanwhile, Bud and Lori manage to evade the campus security guard by ducking into a room. No sooner do they have time to observe that the room is a mess before someone else enters, and the pair quickly dive into a supply closet. Their hiding place is immediately discovered when the female professor who has just entered spills a cup of orange juice and opens the closet in search of cleaning supplies. Surprisingly enough, she takes this quite well, introduces herself as Professor Lucy Suzuki, and even shows the kids her collection of strange archaeological artefacts, which she believes to be alien in origin. One of the pieces turns out to be the object Bud and Lori are looking for, so the kids quickly excuse themselves and depart. Lucy is poised to go after them before she gets a phone call from the front desk to inform her that someone from the government is here to see her urgently...

Back on Velocitron, Crumplezone and Ransack use their lead to blast out a bridge, leaving Dirt Boss and all the Autobots behind them unable to proceed. Optimus helps Hot Shot clear the gap by driving off the edge into mid-air and using his cannons as a ramp for Hot Shot to vault off of, making it safely to the other side. Dirt Boss, meanwhile, goes off road, and quickly closes the gap on Crumplezone and Ransack, crashing down on top of them from above and flattening them down into the asphalt. While all this excitement goes on, Override crosses the finish line in first place, and Hot Shot then uses his Cyber Key Power to take second, securing his position in the next heat of the race.

Across the galaxy on Jungle Planet , Backstop entreats Scourge to listen to Overhaul's pleas.
"My theory... is that the item... is in a room."
:—Elementary, my dear Bud!

"Has Crumplezone overheated and mistaken Ransack for his little red wagon?"
:—Race announcer after Crumplezone jumps upon Ransack

"Was that an explosion? What's going on back there?!"
"Don't worry about it!"
:-Yeah, no need to worry about the fact that you're being chased by a crazy midget and a big, dumb powerhouse and that you almost got blown to bits!

"You rode on my back!"
:—Crumplezone, on why he is riding Ransack

"What's weeth zeez humans, anyway? Zey are one bunch of deesorderly cats, eh?"
:—Zut alors! Mudflap is French! Why? Dang if we know!

"Ask yourself, friend, why is Optimus Prime so concerned with humans? Shouldn't the focus be on us? Do you enjoy a life suffering humans?"<br>
"No. I don't."<br>
"Just join with me, and you will no longer have to worry about trivial human problems!"<br>
"But... you are evil. So is Megatron."<br>
"That, Mudflap, is an unfortunate misunderstanding! The Decepticons and the Autobots want the same thing! We all live in the same universe. We're just trying to save it with a more direct method."<br>
"Hmmm..."<br>
"You know I'm right."<br>
"...we should come first! Forget the humans! I'll join!"
:—Starscream wins over Mudflap

Notes
Differences with Galaxy Force
This episode features no notable changes from the Galaxy Force version, beyond the usual modifications and extensions made to dialogue and music.

Transformers references
*The Galaxy Force version of "Ship" had Vector Prime inform the kids he had something for them to do while he was on Velocitron. While it's not directly stated, evidently, this mission was the task in question.
*Thundercracker says of Mudflap, "This guy's about as neighborly as a hungry Tigatron!"
*The mysterious government operative previously appeared in "Hidden" and "Collapse.

Real-world references
*Bud dubs Jolt "Double-Oh-Zero", a variation of famous spy James Bond's codename, Double-Oh-Seven (the joke is also in Galaxy Force, though the term used is "0099"). Bud later does his best impression of Bond-as-played-by-Sean Connery, referring to a "Miss Pennymoney" (a reference to Bond's eternally unrequited love interest, Miss Moneypenny).

Trivia
*"Race" was the last episode of Cybertron to premiere on Cartoon Network in 2005; following its broadcast, the series moved to Kids' WB and switched to a daily broadcast, beginning with the debut of the first two episodes of the series, "Fallen" and "Haven", which Cartoon Network had originally skipped.
*The unknown actor who replaced Ryan Hirakida as Bud in "Hero" continues to voice the character in this episode.
*Ransack is somehow able to bear Crumplezone's weight without appreciably slowing down. What is in that guy's Energon?
*The green filter that tinges Megatron's brief communication with Starscream indicate that he's still in his unexplained regeneration bubble-thingy, as seen in the previous episode. This is the last we see of this little oddity; at the start of the next episode, he rolls up in vehicle mode and no mention is made of it again. It does seem a bit similar to his means of regeneration in a later episode...(A possible explanation is that Megatron's power is constantly increasing throughout the series, so when he is injured in later episodes, he can recover without the regenerative bubble.)

Unfortunately, Overhaul's gruff, confrontational manner means that the "discussion" doesn't go very well, almost immediately degenerating into a face-off between the two...
It does seem a bit similar to his means of regeneration in a later episode...(A possible explanation is that Megatron's power is constantly increasing throughout the series, so when he is injured in later episodes, he can recover without the regenerative bubble.)
The Autobots investigate their first clue to the Omega Lock, and Landmine reveals there's more to him than meets the eye.

Synopsis
On Velocitron, native racers Crumplezone and Ransack are driving along, minding their own business, when they suddenly find Megatron standing in their paths. The Decepticon leader attacks the pair, and they opt for flight over fight, but Megatron has no intentions of letting them escape. The pair transform to robot mode to try and give a decent account of themselves, but Megatron slaps them around with ease and informs them they now work for him. The defeated duo can do little but obey.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Landmine is feeling useless due to the fact that he is still recovering from his injuries at the hands of Starscream. Optimus Prime reassures him he'll be back up to fighting strength again soon. Soon, Coby, Bud and Lori arrive to cheer Landmine up, and Optimus leaves them alone, departing for a meeting with the other Autobots to discuss a plan of action for finding the Cyber Planet Keys. They agree that more info on the Atlantis Pattern and the Omega Lock is needed, so Vector Prime begins analyzing the pattern while the others head out to gather intel. Lori and Bud go too, with Jetfire and Jolt, respectively. Optimus, meanwhile, goes looking for Hot Shot, and finds him goofing off at a local race track. Optimus reprimands him for being reckless when discretion is needed, and the apologetic Hot Shot swears it won't happen again.

Back at the base, Coby is giving Landmine a checkup. He tells him he's not completely healed yet, but Landmine is eager to help look for info, so Coby agrees to let him go out, so long as he picks an Earth vehicle mode, first. They head out to a construction site, where Landmine chooses a front loader as his alternate mode, then he and Coby start their search.

Elsewhere, Bud has been surfing the net from within Jolt, and has discovered a report of an archaeological artifact bearing the Atlantis Pattern at a museum in Mexico. Jolt passes the news to Optimus, who orders the whole team to the museum. Unfortunately, Starscream and Thundercracker spot them en route, and follow them to Mexico.

The Autobots arrive at the museum first, under cover of night, but it isn't long before the two Decepticons show up. Thundercracker shows off his new Cyber Key, blasting Jetfire, and the two airborne nemeses take off to duel in the skies. The Recon Mini-Con Team and the kids clear the battlefield, and Vector Prime heads inside to check out the pattern, covered by Hot Shot and Scattorshot while Optimus Prime faces down Starscream. The treacherous Decepticon unveils his own Cyber Key Power, but before a fight can begin between the two, Landmine comes charging in, determined to get a piece of the Decepticon. Prime orders him to stand back, as he's not ready for combat, but Landmine hesitates, and Starscream takes the opportunity to shoot at him. Optimus takes the shot for Landmine, and Landmine charges at Starscream with righteous fury, but the Decepticon knocks him down, and flies toward the museum to take out Vector Prime. Scattorshot and Hot Shot hold him off, but as they battle, Jetfire and Thundercracker appear overhead, still dogfighting. One of Thundercracker's shots goes wide, heading for the kids and Mini-Cons, and Landmine leaps to defend them. Summoning his Cyber Key for the first time, Landmine activates his "Cyber Tempest" attack to detonate the incoming fire, proving that he's ready for action again.

At this point, Vector Prime emerges and declares that the object inside is not the Omega Lock, but rather an imitation. With the object of their search proven a fake, and with Red Alert Overhaul arriving to reinforce the Autobots, Starscream calls for a retreat.

Back at base, Landmine and Coby share a moment, as Landmine tells him that their friendship has made saving Earth just as important to him as saving Cybertron. As the Autobots lament that they appear to be back to square one, Vector Prime reveals that while the object at the base was an imitation, it did contain a star map giving the location of Velocitron, where one of the Cyber Planet Keys is located. Optimus dispatches Hot Shot and Red Alert to Velocitron, with orders to be discreet and make no contact with the locals. Vector Prime combines the power of his sword with Optimus's Matrix of Leadership to open a dimension gate to Velocitron, and the pair waste no time in heading through. Hot Shot is agog at the endless speedways of the planet...and aghast when he is suddenly passed by the speeding form of a female Velocitronian, who seems to be even faster than him.
Notes
Differences with Galaxy Force
*Rather inexplicably, Cybertron cuts off the short sequence which precedes the title card of the Galaxy Force version of the episode, in which Crumplezone and Ransack are racing along, discussing the weather. They run a white car off the road, then drive into the mouth of a tunnel, which is where we rejoin them after the title card, and where the Cybertron episode begins.
*Crumplezone and Ransack's reaction to Megatron's proclamation that they work for him is reversed; in Galaxy Force, Crumplezone immediately agrees to work for him, prompting an irritated Ransack to ask why he's speaking for him, while in Cybertron, it is Crumplezone who turns Megatron down, with Ransack claiming it's an offer they can't refuse.
*During Landmine's talk with Coby at episode's end, Galaxy Force has Landmine refer to Cybertron being swallowed up by the black hole, a plot point consistently excised from the Cybertron dub. In its place, Landmine talks about how he was not initially interested in saving Earth, but that his new friendship with Coby has convinced him otherwise.

Pain count
*"Cyber Key Power!": 4
*"Super mode!": 1

Animation or technical errors
* When Starscream and Thundercracker arrive at the museum, they both announce their own names...but the cry of "Transform!" that should follow is absent.
* When Thundercracker says, "I just love parties, don't you, Starscream?" his mouth is not moving.

Transformers references
* Landmine is still recovering from injuries he took back in "Fallen".
* The generic sports car Autobots based on Blurr's bodyform appear again in this episode, having previously been seen in "Hidden". The white Velocitronian sports car cut from the Cybertron version of this episode is also a Blurr-type.

Trivia
*Landmine takes an Earth altmode in this episode. However, he pretty clearly had a lot of kibble from this altmode before he acquired it (as the animators didn't have the budget to design a pre-Earth body... but couldn't they at least have removed the shovels before then? 'Course, he could have been a Cybertronian loader).
*Thundercracker and Starscream can now summon Cyber Keys, despite the fact that back in "Haven", the Autobots could not do so before Vector Prime awoke the ability within them. It is never explained how these two Decepticons (as well as Megatron, who will soon get in on the act) obtained the ability. On the colony worlds the Transformers will go on to visit through the series, however, Cyber Key Powers are common knowledge, and all the Transformers there have always had them.
*Landmine's transformation to robot mode is awfully balletic for a rough, tough, front loader.
*Landmine can use his shovel halves as shields, capable of blocking Starscream's Null Cannons, hence his Galaxy Force name 'Guardshell'.

A hologram is an artificially created image using photons arranged in a manner to better display information...or trick people, depending on the situation at hand.

Fiction
In addition to physically changing form, Transformers across all continuities use holograms to maintain disguise in their alternate mode, especially when battle damage would otherwise make that difficult.

Generation 1 cartoon
The Autobot Hound often made use of holograms. While guarding Ravage with Mirage, Hound came up with the idea to use a hologram to trick the Decepticons and lead them into an ambush. Optimus Prime agreed, and Ravage was allowed to escape, believing he had learned of a military base with large amounts of rocket fuel. Megatron, however, saw through Ravage's escape, sending the Decepticons to the real base, while he went with a group of shoddy constructions to rub it in Prime's face. The hologram of the base worked just fine, though... More than Meets the Eye, Part 3

Shockwave was using a holographic projector to train with Sentinel drones when the Combaticons arrived and attacked them. Later, Shockwave and Starscream used the holographic projector to create various images of hostiles. This successfully distracted the Combaticons for some time, until Swindle discovered that their attackers were holograms. The Combaticons aren't really smart. That's why they let Onslaught do all the thinking. The Revenge of Bruticus

IDW comics continuity
Recognizing that the Autobots' lack of drivers would attract attention, they used Holomatter avatars to avoid detection. However, security measures can be devised specifically to detect holomatter, showing that organizations such as the Machination already anticipated Cybertronian interference.

Beast Wars/Beast Machines
By the Beast Era, holograms were in more wide scale use, including such applications as entertainment and military use. The Axalon and the Darksyde both made extensive use of hologram technology to run simulations and observe events in real time. On Cybertron, there were holo-chips which allowed Transformers to interface with them and see things virtually&mdash;some of which were not always virtuous, if you get our meaning. Sparkwar Pt. II: The Search.

Cybertron cartoon
Transformers were capable of creating holographic illusions of car interiors and drivers. A great many of these holographic drivers were based off of Bud Hansen, with others presumably being based off of Bud's brother Coby and his brother's (soon-to-be) girlfriend Lori. Hidden

Movie
After introducing the Autobots, Optimus Prime showed Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes a hologram of the devastation Cybertron suffered during the war with Megatron. The Decepticons also made use of holograms, using a single, mustached male as a display to avoid attracting attention. Oddly enough, the Decepticon holograms appear to have solid machinery underneath them, but when activated they appear to be a projection with nothing under the surface. Transformers (2007)

While on a mission chasing down Decepticons in the Australian outback, a NEST team mistakenly raided a party of humans. When they realized their mistake, the Autobots had to urgently try to keep their cover, so they rezzed up some driver holograms in a rush. They were in such a hurry that Optimus Prime and Ironhide copied Salvage's driver exactly. Fortunately none of the humans noticed the triplet drivers.

The next site the NEST team came to, they were more cautious to prevent making the same mistake. They discovered three construction vehicles. The vehicles were the Constructicons Kickback, Tread, and Trample. Their holographic drivers were realistic enough and able to carry out casual human conversation convincingly enough that they very nearly fooled even the human members of the NEST team. Just to make sure Kaminari Ishihara tossed a rock to one of the miners that was standing around outside of the Constructicon's cab. When he let it drop at his feet, William Lennox threw another rock, this time intending to hit him. The rock passed right through him blowing their cover. A fight ensued. The Veiled Threat
Notes
* This should NOT be confused with T-AI, who is really a computer program-she just chooses to manifest a human form via hologram.
Fang entered Maccadam's Old Oil House in a bad mood. Annoyed that the piano was not playing the music he wanted he started beating the machine up with his pile driver hand, and demanded the poor bot call him "sir", firing a laser from his foot.
