Sideswipe is not nearly as much of a sociopath as his brother Sunstreaker, but he is every bit as skillful. He's more into battle for the sport of it. A bit of a jock, Sideswipe most craves a glorious fight to the finish as a test of his mettle.

There is a reckless edge to Sideswipe's tactics. He makes rash decisions that may endanger him, all in the name of possible victory. Cheating is also not out of the question. When everything is on the line, for Sideswipe, nothing is out of the question. Over time, his reckless attitude has not changed. However, his cause has; once in it solely for the glory, now he's driven by the desire to defend freedom and the innocent.
Sideswipe, along with his brother Sunstreaker, was part of the original crew of Optimus Prime's Ark. When the Decepticons attacked the ship, it crashed on Earth, and Sideswipe, along with the rest of the combatants, lay dormant for 4 million years. When the volcano that housed the Ark erupted, the Ark's internal mechanisms revived all Transformers, making no distinction between Autobot and Decepticon. Sideswipe was alive again. The Transformers (issue)

When the Autobots went to retrieve their fallen comrade Bumblebee from Sparkplug Witwicky's garage, they were attacked by Decepticons. Against his brother's better judgment, Sideswipe employed his fuel-gobbling rocket backpack to take the fight right to the Decepticon jets, blinding Thundercracker with his flare gun. The 'Cons were driven off, but without a source of fuel to recharge on, several Autobots, including Sideswipe, were left virtually empty after the battle. Power Play! Having sustained some damage during the battle, Sideswipe rode along with Hound in Optimus Prime's trailer back to the Ark to conserve fuel. Prisoner of War!

While the Autobots busied themselves repairing the Ark, Brawn was subjected to a violent electrical feedback. This shock altered his mind, and he lashed out towards his fellow Autobots. Among his victims was Sideswipe, who was man-handled by his erratic comrade, leaving him confused as to whether it had been something he had said which had sent Brawn into a rage. Sideswipe and the Autobots tracked Brawn down as he rampaged through a nearby town, and managed to return him to normal with another electrical shock. Unfortunately, they had no proof that he was his old self, and Brawn was put through trial by combat against Starscream to prove his loyalties. Sideswipe was depressed when he thought that the duel had ended with Brawn's demise, only to be overjoyed to see him intact afterwards, his death having been a ruse orchestrated by Mirage and Optimus. The Enemy Within! Though he could not go on missions, Sideswipe was still able to defend the Ark from invasion when the Decepticons came right to his doorstep. He was confronted by that junk-punk Rumble's earthquake-making ability and turned the tables on him, overpowering Rumble with his pile-driver punches. Raiders of the Last Ark At some point, he helped protect Sherman Dam from some Decepticons, although the Autobots were ultimately unsuccessful at preventing its destruction. Sideswipe and his teammates raced ahead of the resulting flood in order to evacuate a nearby town before the waters reached it. In his vehicle mode, Sideswipe transported many humans to safety, racing against Jazz all the while. Decepticon Dam-Busters!

Sideswipe was present when it was discovered that the human Sparkplug Witwicky had given the Decepticons the fuel they needed to defeat the Autobots. Soon afterwards he was interred into one of the Ark's Tubes of Transference, using his fuel to bolster the power of Optimus Prime, Huffer, Ironhide, Bluestreak and Mirage as the Autobots' last line of defence. Although they were able to defeat Megatron's forces, they didn't count on the reappearance of Shockwave, who took over the Ark and deactivated all the Autobots in the ship. The Last Stand Along with his fellow Autobots, Sideswipe was left hanging from the Ark's ceiling like a slab of beef. The New Order Upon infiltrating the Ark, Ratchet beheld his fellow Autobot in this sad state. Warrior School! After the medic regained control of the Ark for the Autobots, he was able to revive Sideswipe to full functionality in short order, and their new deal for fuel with G.B. Blackrock kept them energized. DIS-Integrated Circuits! He was possibly part of the group of Autobots who battled Devastator when Soundwave and the newly built Constructicons assembled a transdimensional radiowave scrambler to contact Cybertron. Though the Autobots managed to destroy the scrambler, The Decepticons managed to get most of their message through to Cybertron nonetheless. The Next Best Thing to Being There!

Though Shockwave was ultimately evicted from the Ark, he still had Optimus Prime's head held captive in his Blackrock Aerospace Plant headquarters. When the Autobots overheard that Optimus Prime's head had outlived its usefulness and would be disposed of, Sideswipe was part of the large group of Autobots who departed the Ark to rendezvous with the drop-off point. Brainstorm! Sure enough, the Decepticon drone Jetfire approached with the head, though Sideswipe initially proposed blowing it out of the sky. Prowl's caution at first seemed prudent, as Jetfire dropped Prime's head into the swamp in front of them, but their minds changed after they waded into the swamp, retrieved the head, and placed it on Prime's body. The head was in fact a Decepticon decoy that took control of Prime's body and attacked them. On top of that, a strike team led by Soundwave quickly joined them, and Sideswipe soon found himself at the mercy of Ravage, who began tearing out his back with his jaws. Fortunately for the Autobots, Prime's real head was returned, and Sideswipe was one of first to rise from the onslaught to witness their costly victory. Prime Time! These events were observed by the time travelling Dicet Alpha-zero. The Quest!

Sideswipe was aboard the Ark when it came under attack by a flying Transformer—the missing Swoop who had fallen under the control of the human Professor Morris. After attempting to restrain Swoop using non-lethal force, the Autobots discovered that Swoop's primary cybo-dendrons had burnt out during his years in the tar pit, meaning that all the Dinobots were due to going berserk. The Icarus Theory During the subsequent Dinobot Hunt, Sideswipe traveled to Doonstown with Huffer and Bluestreak on a mission to capture the feral Grimlock. They proved unable to subdue their quarry, and were left battered and beaten in the ruins of the town. Dinobot Hunt!

On a mission to build friendly relations with the people of Pinewoodsville, Sideswipe and several other Autobots were hit with a strange blast of energy that reversed their personalities. The group rampaged through the town, ruining months of goodwill work. Tracking the source of the blast to England, the Autobots flew overseas to put an end to what they assumed was a Decepticon plot. But the Decepticons had also been affected by the blast, and were likewise tracking its origin. Sideswipe, Prowl, Jazz, and Mirage holed up inside Optimus's trailer to conserve energy, but were shaken out of their hiding spot by Starscream, just as another personality-reversing blast hit the group. Optimus was sent crashing into a tree off the road, and his troops began calling for a violent mutiny. Sideswipe was the first to return to his senses, just in time to stop Jazz from executing their leader. Nonetheless, Optimus was left too banged-up to carry on with the mission; he hid in a tunnel while his troops soldiered on. The culprit behind the energy blasts turned out to be a human invention, the "PARD." It was destroyed, along with a spy trying to steal it, after Starscream battled Jazz over both. With the threat neutralized, the Autobots carried Optimus back to their UK Base, where Ratchet was waiting to fix him up. To a Power Unknown!

Sideswipe was next seen in Ratchet's repair bay along with several others. Ratchet remarked to Optimus Prime that some of them might never be battle-capable again. Optimus Prime told him to do his best for Sideswipe and the others, and then promptly left to oversee the creation of their replacements. Rock and Roll-Out!

Years later, Sideswipe was seen again on board the Ark when the new Autobot leader Grimlock threatened the lives of some human children to smoke out the "traitor" Blaster. Spacehikers! Soon after, he left the Ark with the rest of its crew to watch the battle between Blaster and Grimlock on Earth's moon. The assembled Autobot forces were attacked during the duel, a devastating first blow bringing down several of them. Blaster and Grimlock were able to put aside their differences long enough to drive off Ratbat's forces however, and Sideswipe was among those still standing in the aftermath. Totaled! He also joined the Autobots in answering a distress signal sent by Buster Witwicky near the Decepticons' Arctic base, resulting in an ambush. Dark Star
During a conflict with the lingering forces of Bludgeon, Sideswipe and the Autobots were rushed off-world by the guardian of an ancient civilization. Ghosts

The war seemingly over, Sideswipe joined the Firestormers, a group of Autobots who aimed to hunt down the last few pockets of Decepticon resistance. He, Broadside, Hound, Blades, and the Dinobots attacked Decepticon Outpost B-67, where they met great numbers but minimal resistance. He expected the liberated citizens of Nexus Seven to be more grateful, but Hound pointed out that their rescuees looked more frightened than pleased, and blamed their group's bloodthirstiness.

But the Firestormers' quest led them to the staggering discovery that these scattered Decepticon outposts were actually just the tip of the iceberg. There were just seventeen conquered and recolonized planets in that sector of space, suggesting that there was something bigger on the horizon than the remnants of Bludgeon's old team. After Optimus Prime was called to hear this news from Sideswipe and the other Firestormers, they were suddenly attacked and captured by a ship in orbit. Sideswipe and the others were put in prison cells aboard the starship Twilight, which was under the command of Jhiaxus, the Liege Centuro of a forgotten race of Transformers. This revelation momentarily shook Optimus Prime's resolve, but after being brought back to his senses by Grimlock, the two Autobots freed Sideswipe and the others from their cells. They fought their way through the starship to an escape vessel and escaped without injury, though they were burdened with this new knowledge. War Without End!

Sideswipe was present when the Autobots met Jhiaxus's Decepticons in battle on a planet within the K'tord Nebula. At first, tempers merely flared, but soon both sides lost themselves in a violent, bloody rage. Before they were completely lost to their baser instincts, the source of their behavior was discovered to be tar-like emotional parasites. The parasites were removed, and both factions decided to leave peacefully. Primal Fear!
Grimlock, disobeying Optimus Prime's orders, led a covert team onto the Cybertronian Empire ship Twilight to defeat Jhiaxus and his army of "evolved Decepticons". Sideswipe was wary of their plan to steal a ship and slip on board, but Grimlock assured him that the plan was foolproof. Grimlock changed his tune when they soon learned that they were led into a trap, resulting in Red Alert's death and the Autobots' capture. Sideswipe and the others were rounded up onto a shuttle to be inspected by the Liege Maximo, but managed to escape their fate with assistance from Optimus Prime. Devices and Desires! (Marvel)

Later, while Optimus Prime and Megatron were discussing an alliance against Jhiaxus's Cybertronians, Sideswipe interrupted to tell them that they had received a distress signal from the planet Ethos. Escalation! Sure enough, upon arrival, the Autobots found an advanced civilization in ruins, but managed to repel the Cybertronians thanks to their new Decepticon allies. Escalation!

Finally, Jhiaxus took the full force of his Empire to Earth, where the Autobot/Decepticon alliance had camped. Sideswipe joined them in shooting their attackers out of the sky as they approached. Total War!
Years later, Sideswipe was part of Jazz's Special Commando Unit, summoned to Earth along with Optimus Prime by Grimlock when Bludgeon began open war on the humans. Prime decided to go after Bludgeon himself, and he assigned Jazz, Sideswipe and Skram to take down one Decepticon strike team at a time because the Decepticon forces were spread very thin. While still in vehicle mode, Sideswipe shot Flamefeather in the crotch, then transformed and hoped aloud that Prime would be okay in the face of Bludgeon's mysterious powers. War Without End (issue)

When the Skyscorchers left in the middle of battle, Jazz concluded they had another target to go after—which he and Sideswipe simultaneously realized to be Optimus Prime! The Skyscorchers had actually left to go after Bludgeon's enemy Megatron, whom Sideswipe and his comrades helped shoot at when they arrived in the middle of a fight between the one-time Decepticon leader, Prime, and the Dinobots. Following Megatron's retreat, Sideswipe helped secure prisoners and weapons for withdrawal to the Autobase hidden on Earth's moon. War Zone
Soon thereafter, due to the actions of an evil Ultra Magnus from another dimension, a rift of space time opened over Earth, causing catastrophes worldwide.
In a splinter timeline Sideswipe had more adventures, including one where he gained a new Binaltech body until time travel said otherwise. He continued serving the Autobots well into the year 2011, where he was stationed on both Athenia and Earth simultaneously, but nobody noticed. Upon hearing that his "twin Autobot" had been captured by the Decepticons, Sideswipe flew into a rage and vowed to rescue Sunstreaker himself. Grimlock advised Sideswipe to take Sludge and Slag with him, as they would surely encounter Devastator within the Decepticons' headquarters. The three Autobots made their way towards Decepticon territory, encountering numerous traps along the road. Sideswipe was almost done in by a land mine, but managed to transform in time to avoid being seriously damaged. When the trio arrived at the Decepticon camp, another obstacle presented itself in the form of a duo of Decepticon guards. Making short work of these two, Sideswipe's group entered the Decepticon basewhere they came face-to-face against Devastator, as anticipated. Despite their best efforts, the Autobots were overpowered by Devastator, and put in a holding cell alongside Sunstreaker. Later, Megatron announced that the Autobots had agreed to surrender, and brought out his prisoner to look upon the Autobots' peace offering; a life-size statue of Devastator. The surrender turned out to be a ruse however, and Autobot reinforcements burst forth from within the Devastator statue. Sideswipe joined the battle between Autobots and Decepticons that followed. The Autobots were ultimately victorious, and Sideswipe was amongst the Autobots still standing in the aftermath. Optimus ordered his troops to gather the wounded, and the Autobots returned home. The Autobots' Secret Weapon
With Sparkplug acting as their referee, Sideswipe and Bluestreak raced one another in order to determine who was the fastest. The race ended in a tie, with Sparkplug declaring them both winners. Upon awakening on Earth after being offline for about 65 million years, Sideswipe met Sparkplug and his son Spike. With the Decepticons still not in the know of what forms the Autobots had taken, Sideswipe was one of the troops that Optimus led into the desert in order to ambush their enemies. Though they successfully took by surprise a squadron of Decepticons, the Autobots had not anticipated a second group flying in from the opposite direction. Prowl ordered his troops to try and outrun Trypticon, which Sideswipe misinterpreted as meaning they would try to "run it in circles and then pop it one in the exhaust vent." Neither tactic worked in any case, and the Autobots were only spared because Trypticon suddenly received a transmission recalling him to the neutral zones, and broke off from the fight to respond to it. Revelation (The Dark Ages) Sideswipe and his teammates returned to their headquarters for repairs, where Sideswipe received a communique from Swoop, explaining that both Grimlock and Jetfire had mysteriously vanished. Sideswipe was part of Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human-Autobot effort to defeat the Earth-bounded Decepticons. At the end it was a success, and the captured Decepticons along with the Autobots and a human crew departed Earth en route to Cybertron in the Ark II. The ship, however, was sabotaged and exploded upon liftoff.

A few years later, Megatron and other Transformers, including Autobots, were seen causing havoc. It was discovered that Lazarus, a scientist who participated in the Ark II project, was responsible for the sabotage of the ship and the resurrection of several Transformers under his control via technological tampering. Prime Directive issue 1
Months later, after Optimus Prime, Megatron, and an assortment of other Transformers and humans vanished in a flash of light from Tokyo, Japan, the world went on high alert. When the U.S. military detected Starscream in the Nevada canyons, Sideswipe accompanied a flight of jets in confronting the Decepticon. Their battle led down a tight box canyon, and Sideswipe had some difficulty chasing Starscream while also coordinating with his military wingmen, as he tried to limit the human casualties. Eventually, Sideswipe was led straight into Devastator, who had been hiding in the canyon on Starscream's order. This time, the Autobots and Decepticons had joined forces against an ambush arranged by the President of the United States, who hoped to rid his country of the Transformers. Sideswipe waded through General Michelle Grajkowski's troops, heavily routing her Delta Team, but the deconstructionite weapons being used by the U.S. Armed Forces were too much of a surprise for the Cybertronians—they were clearly on the losing end of the battle as many of their number fell before the severity of the weaponized nanites became evident. Despite using his pile-drivers to send some of these attackers for a tumble, Sideswipe found himself severely overpowered by the newcomers, along with the rest of the Autobots. He and the others retreated as the Decepticons were taken in as war criminals. Optimus Prime split his forces so that their wounded could be tended to while a small scouting party was sent out to investigate further Shockwave and his followers. Though Sunstreaker came to his rescue, the two brother wound up prisoners of the Insecticons nonetheless. Thankfully, Bumper, who had since found his courage, freed Sideswipe and Sunstreaker in time for them to participate in their team's last stand against the enemy swarm. Sideswipe was forged after the War of the Threefold Spark. Joining Security Operations when he reached maturity, his eagerness to fight rubbed some of the war veterans the wrong way. The Change In Your Nature Part Two

In the wake of Brainstorm's murder, Barricade and Sideswipe were tracking possible members of The Rise. The World In Your Eyes Part Three

When Cyclonus crashed into Security Operations headquarters, Sideswipe came running, thinking a bomb had gone off. When the veteran revealed the existence of a Rise base beneath the Memorial Crater, Chromia told an overeager Sideswipe to open the armory. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Two Arriving at the crater with Chromia and Windblade, Sideswipe salivated over the weapons he'd brought with him before Chromia dropped down into the base. Left on the surface, Sideswipe chatted up Windblade before Flamewar made herself known and one-upped Sideswipe's thermal lance. Quickly recovering, Sideswipe engaged the Riser in a duel before she took her leave, an act that heralded the base's violent death. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Three Retreating to headquarters, Sideswipe was tended to by Flatline whom he griped to about Flamewar's choice of insult, she'd called him "Slowswipe", with the doctor feeling he should get his priorities straight. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Four

When Sentinel Prime returned to Cybertron, he sent out literally every Security Operations agent to root out the Rise. Partnered with Springer, Sideswipe patrolled the regions around Crystal City before an alert came in from an energon processing station. Springer quickly changed to copter mode to reach the crime scene leaving Sideswipe to catch up on the ground, finding Springer having been made a fool of. As the Triple Changer picked himself up, he told Sideswipe to call in everyone. The duo trailed the group to a Titan corpse in the Cybertronian Mountains but quickly found the aggressors' superior firepower put them at a disadvantage. The Change In Your Nature Part One

When reinforcements arrived, Sideswipe took up a sniping position, being backed up by Kup and Strongarm, his lust for violence quickly earning Kup's ire. After Javelin had been struck, Flak fired a harassment barrage providing cover for Sideswipe who planted explosive charges on one of the Titan's airlocks. While Kaskade was knocked down, Lowload recovered quickly, using his drill tank mode to harass Kup and Strongarm. Sideswipe tackled the brute from behind, planting a grenade on him, but the wounded Riser managed to retreat back inside the Titan. Grumbling, Sideswipe requested heavier artillery. The Change In Your Nature Part Two

After the Tether had collapsed, Sideswipe helped clear debris from the A'ovan habitat where he requested a transfer into Hound's new counterterrorism unit only to be shot down. Joining up with Prowl's unit as they prepared for a raid on Swindle's, Sideswipe took up position on a nearby rooftop, Sideswipe tackled Storm Cloud, downing him with his thermal lance and allowing Security Operations to take him into custody. Rise of the Decepticons: Swindle's

When the Decepticons revealed themselves and seized the Senate building, Sideswipe was part of the operation to retake it. Under Prowl's command again, he complimented Javelin's return to action after her injury and stood ready with the rest of his team to provide cover fire for anyone escaping the Senate building. After Clench turned a rail gun on the Autobots, Sideswipe moved in to rescue Bumper, who had been shot. Sideswipe took heavy damage carrying the wounded Bumper out of the line of fire. War World: Prime

They both recovered and were soon back on security duty with Strongarm in Crystal City, watching over an experiment Perceptor performed involving Jumpstream. After having saved his life, Sideswipe now found Bumper annoyingly eager to impress him, and told the rookie to make a perimeter sweep of the building. Once Bumper ran off, Strongarm pointed out his obvious hero worship of Sideswipe, which Sideswipe seemed oblivious to. She told him he was a role model now, something Sideswipe didn't think he was cut out for. *Sideswipe's first Transformers toy was originally intended to be an Autobot-aligned release of the red version of the Diaclone toy "No. 1 Countach LP500S", alongside his brother, then named "Spinout", as a yellow "No. 15 New Countach LP500S" — that is to say, Sideswipe was supposed to look like a red Sunstreaker, and Sunstreaker was supposed to look like a yellow Sideswipe. This notion survived long enough into production that the original series bible and his published The Transformers Universe bio describe Sideswipe with features of Sunstreaker's toy. During development, the characters had their molds swapped, but not their colors, making the yellow Countach Sunstreaker and the red New Countach Sideswipe that we know today. This whole shebang resulted in discrepancies such as Sideswipe being noted for his jet pack (in reality, Sunstreaker's vehicle mode exposed engine) and Sunstreaker's red shoulder stickers (which were intended to match with an otherwise red toy). In the decades since, Hasbro and TakaraTomy have been inducting old Diaclone colorways into Transformersdom; the characters of Spin-Out and Tigertrack are modern updates of the toys that were intended for Sideswipe and Sunstreaker respectively.
*Sideswipe's piston arms (apparently derived from the "rocket booster" missiles of the Sunstreaker toy) didn't have a model sheet drawn up for them, so every time they appeared in the Generation 1 cartoon, they looked different (as illustrated at right). First, in "S.O.S. Dinobots," they were immobile stumps; then, in "A Plague of Insecticons," they appeared as broad and flat and operated by pumping back and forth, only to change shape between scenes, being replaced with long, tubular constructs; and for their final appearance in "Dinobot Island, Part 2", they resembled the tip of a pneumatic drill. Sideswipe uses a hand-held jackhammer in "Fire on the Mountain," apparently the result of the animators misinterpreting the script's direction for him to use his piston arms.
**Most of these designs have been realized in toy form: the first "A Plague of Insecticons" design came with Masterpiece Sideswipe; the "Dinobot Island" design was an Amazon-exclusive accessory for the Masterpiece toy; and the "S.O.S. Dinobots" design came with Masterpiece Clampdown.
*Sideswipe's Japanese name, "Lambor" (ランボル) is derived from the name of his vehicle mode, a Lamborghini (ランボルギーニ). It may also be a word play on the Japanese word "ranbō" (乱暴), which means "reckless, violent, rough". Wouldn't be the last time Takara's done such word puns.
*According to a story page in the October 1985 issue of TV Magazine, Sideswipe and Red Alert are brothers, with Sideswipe being slightly older than Red Alert. This connection may have been invented because, aside from Sideswipe and Red Alert sharing the same mold, Sunstreaker was not sold in the Japanese market outside of a special "versus" set with Skids and Buzzsaw. However, the familial dynamic between Sideswipe and Sunstreaker was not changed in the Japanese dub of the original Transformers cartoon, leading some Japanese fans to consider the three Lamborghini characters as triplets.
*Sideswipe has the dubious distinction of being the only one of the European Autobot Classic Heroes range not to feature in Marvel UK's Earthforce stories, not even making a late appearance like fellow 1991 addition Tracks.
To counter the new Stunticons, the Autobots create the Aerialbots, but the new team members aren't so sure about the Autobot cause.

Synopsis
On Cybertron, the Autobots are busy converting old drone rockets into Earth planes. Once their redesigns are complete, they take the ships to Vector Sigma. However, without the Key to Vector Sigma, which is in the possession of Megatron, they cannot activate the supercomputer and give Cybertronic personalities to the new bots. Alpha Trion, however, intends to activate it by merging his lifeforce with the computer. Optimus Prime tries to stop him, but Alpha Trion merges with the supercomputer. It gives life to the new Aerialbots: Silverbolt, Slingshot, Skydive, Fireflight, and Air Raid.

The Autobots and Aerialbots prepare to leave, but Alpha Trion gives Optimus a warning: the Key to Vector Sigma will have different properties on Earth, which could destroy the planet. However, Shockwave overhears this. Heading back to the surface, the Autobots and Aerialbots encounter more Centurion droids, but the Aerialbots are able to get them to Omega Supreme. Omega returns them to Earth, but suddenly explodes.

Ratchet, Wheeljack, and Sparkplug Witwicky begin working to restore Omega, while the Autobots and Aerialbots head toward the base with the superfuel. Shockwave contacts Megatron, informing him of the recent developments on Cybertron, and the Key's power, so Megatron decides to run some tests. At the base, the humans believe that the Autobots attacked them, and open fire. Slingshot is pissed, but Ironhide reminds them that they are simply confused. Suddenly, they detect high speed movement. Optimus initially believes that it's Starscream and the jets, but it's the Stunticons, who quickly overwhelm the Autobots, forcing the Aerialbots to take to the air. Slingshot is attacked by Motormaster. Silverbolt goes to save him, but suddenly panics. Megatron, still testing the Key, orders the Stunticons to return to base.

However, during the tests, Soundwave trips and drops the Key, causing it to discharge its energy... turning the ground below it into metal. Megatron realizes that the Key can not only give life to machines, but also turn organic matter into metal. He now has a new plan—convert Earth into a new Cybertron.

Back at the base, the Aerialbots are unimpressed with the Autobots and disgusted with the humans they are supposed to defend. Optimus confronts Silverbolt about his panic, and learns that Silverbolt is afraid of heights. In a questionable command decision, Optimus appoints Silverbolt to be Aerialbot leader, hoping it will give him something to focus on other than fear. Soon, Teletraan I detects the energy emissions from the Key, and its result. The Decepticons are heading toward Seattle, and the Autobots roll out. Meanwhile, Silverbolt attempts to convince the Aerialbots to return to the base, saying that if they're the best, they should run the place. He shows them that the Decepticons will destroy them, showing how bad they are. He also shows the humans' capacity for compassion, letting them see how Sparkplug continues to work on Omega while Ratchet goes to recharge. Convinced, the Aerialbots move out.

Near Seattle, the Stunticons are overwhelming the Autobots, with Optimus Prime about to be crushed to death, when the Aerialbots arrive and save the Autobot leader. Megatron and Optimus reveal their last aces in the hole, ordering the Stunticons and Aerialbots to form Menasor and Superion, respectively. Menasor has the strength advantage, but Omega Supreme arrives, and turns the tide. The Decepticons retreat with the Key, but Silverbolt races after Megatron, knocking the Key from his hand and switching to robot mode to destroy it. Silverbolt believes he's about to go splat, but Slingshot manages to save him. The Aerialbots are convinced to join the Autobots, while Optimus appears convinced that Alpha Trion made the right choice.
Notes
Continuity notes
*Alpha Trion notes that he is a "first-generation product of Vector Sigma. We share the same computation matrix." He then reactivates the computer by merging his own power supply - and life force - with it.
*Omega can simply launch his arms into the air to form his rocket ship.
*This is not the last you'll hear of the Key to Vector Sigma. The Key, and, in particular, its ability to transform organic material into techno-matter play a key role in the events of Beast Machines.
*This episode, along with the previous one, offers a unique perspective the differing world views of Megatron and Optimus Prime as the Stunticons and the Aerialbots are given their personalities: Megatron favors the narrow-sighted interest of hating Autobots (Everything is fodder, right?) while Optimus values individual thinking and preserving life (Freedom is the right of all sentient beings, right?).

Real-world references
*The sound effect used for Omega Supreme's brain pulses is the same one used for the Dalek control rooms in all episodes of Doctor Who since 1963. It had previously been used in "Microbots".
*The final battle happens just outside the Seattle-Tacoma region.
*Star Wars sound effects:
**Millennium Falcon engine burst and TIE Fighter roar as the Aerialbots first take to the air on Cybertron.
**Falcon engine again as the Aerialbots fly out of the tunnel, TIE engine as they enter Omega, and Falcon a third time as Omega flies away from Cybertron.
**Falcon engine yet again as Omega flies through space, and again as he touches down on Earth.
**Diving X-wing Fighter sound as Silverbolt aborts his attempt to help Slingshot.
**A clashing lightsaber sound is used repeatedly for the Key's matter-transforming effect.

Animation and technical errors
*The glowing aura around Vector Sigma appears and disappears repeatedly between shots.
*As Alpha Trion merges with Vector Sigma, two of Blaster's buttons suddenly merge into one.
*"He made a choice..." Wheeljack's missing his orange details.
*Vector Sigma clearly has the key stuck in the side of it when it creates the Aerialbots.
*Coloring errors:
**Shockwave's eye isn't colored its usual bright yellow as he walks in during the Aerialbots' creation.
**Shockwave's "ears" are purple instead of gray as he listens in on Alpha Trion's warning.
**"So what are we waiting for?" - the top of Ironhide's torso is all red; it should be half gray.
**When Shockwave contacts Megatron in-flight, Breakdown is colored as Silverbolt.
**"Then we'll need a secret place to examine it further." - Wildrider is colored like Alpha Trion.
**As Omega watches the Aerialbots fly out of the tunnel, the animators use the cheatsy route of coloring his visor a solid yellow, rather than drawing his face underneath it.
**The coloring on Blaster's helmet is wrong as often as it's right. Multiple times, the round central part is colored red instead of white.
**As Ironhide walks up to challenge Slingshot, the inside of Skydive's cheekguards are the same yellow as his face, rather than the gray of his helmet.
**"On this world..." Soundwave's cheekguards are blue instead of silver. The camera then closes in on a rather badly-drawn Megatron... only to cut to a different shot showing Megatron at the same angle, in the same pose, but much more detailed and precise.
**"And you let the Aerialbots take a powder?" - the tops of Blaster's cheekguards are white instead of red.
**"None of the Autobots can hold a candle to us!" - the top of Slingshot's head is white instead of yellow.
**As Blaster says, "This is slaughter!," Optimus' headlights are red (with a strange pattern of panel lines) instead of white.
*The Aerialbots are missing whilst Optimus gives his request for the Aerialbots' personalities.
*Fireflight is entirely blocked by Optimus Prime's head during his introduction line. Down in front!
*"More I cannot say." - Optimus is missing one of his smokestacks.
*Omega's wound is clearly shown on the thick band below his Autobot symbol; the camera lingers on it for a long, significant moment as he leaves Cybertron. In the very next shot, the damage is gone. It doesn't re-appear until the shot of Omega exploding.

*Blaster gets a transformation noise as he spins around to unleash a sonic assault on the Stunticons, even though he doesn't transform.
*Blaster is drawn delivering Ironhide's "Those guys are out of their cotton-pickin' heads" line.
*When Ironhide argues with Slingshot about the Decepticons retreating, his waist is vastly oversized, looking somewhat like a...skirt...until Optimus intercedes, at which point it disappears for a moment before returning to its normal design.

*Later, as Slingshot tells Ironhide that the Aerialbots don't need the Autobots, the symbol on Ironhide's chest overlaps with the area near his waist, rather than being entirely on the rim under his windshield.
*In the same sequence, Optimus' smoke stacks are drawn midway down his shoulders.
*As the Aerialbots follow Slingshot out of Autobot Headquarters, Silverbolt is missing his right arm. It appears as he turns to look after them.
*Improbable viewpoints:
**Teletraan somehow gives Prime a first-person, on-the-ground look at what Megatron's up to. Did the Sky Spy just plop down in the forest?
*Teletraan's map of the central US is a bit distorted. Mississippi extends all the way up to the top of Tennessee, for example, and Kentucky appears to have split into three states.
*Slingshot is drawn mouthing Silverbolt's line about responsibility, and then Silverbolt continues gesticulating randomly while Slingshot delivers a lengthy retort.
*Silverbolt has no transformation sound as he returns to robot mode to destroy the key.

Rhino DVD release
The Kid Rhino release of this episode had errors not present in the original broadcast version, due to their use of incomplete film masters:

*When Silverbolt has his back to the camera as tries to put his point of view to Slingshot, his dialogue is accompanied with a fairly random series of gesticulations. The broadcast master featured a re-animated version of this sequence with Silverbolt now gesturing more appropriately in time with his dialogue. This short sequence was not corrected for the Shout! Factory DVD release.
*Once the key is destroyed towards the end of the episode, the forest is shown turning into metal, rather than returning to normal. This shot was corrected on broadcast, and the Shout! Factory version restores the corrected shot from the broadcast master.

Continuity errors
*The shuttlecraft that the Autobots rebuild are vastly larger than the Aerialbots they become.
*The Autobots are in a rush to rebuild Omega Supreme, correct? So why in the world does Optimus Prime have Wheeljack and Hoist - both fix-it men - come with him to visit the Earth naval base? Shouldn't they be at headquarters, trying to help to rebuild Omega? Wheeljack can be briefly seen helping Ratchet after the fight with the Stunticons.
*At one point during the battle, Wildrider is speeding towards Blaster. Blaster tells Wildrider to "Eat asphalt, chump!" despite the fact that his sonic blasts are ripping apart completely unpaved earth.
*Even more than most episodes, this one calls attention to the oddity of Omega Supreme's transformation. His rocket mode is the only part of him that travels through space; yet when he gets wherever he's going, he can always transform to his full robot mode, including all the bits he left behind on Earth. In this ep, Omega actually fires off his arms from his robot mode while running along - clearly leaving behind an armless robot on Cybertron!
*On-screen, Omega Supreme's explosion comes off as completely random - seemingly caused by nothing more than a random hole in his side whose cause is unknown to us. See the Trivia notes below for the lost explanation.
*Megatron said that the Key to Vector Sigma "de-energizes matter, turns it into metal". We can buy the turns-it-into-metal bit as handwaving techno science stuff... but removing energy from matter doesn't turn it into metal. (And if it did - wouldn't Megatron be stuck with an energyless world?)
*The Autobots might fare better against the Stunticons if they would stop and shoot them instead of driving around in circles. Y'know, shooting? That thing that works against all the other Decepticons all the time?
*Menasor rips the top floors off a building and smashes Superion with it. Hope the attack happened on a weekend, 'cause otherwise a bunch of people just died!
*Silverbolt doesn't even try to get out of his supposedly-fatal plunge at the end! Woulda ruined the pathos, we suppose.

Trivia
*The tank vehicles seen at the army base are the M.O.B.A.T. and the Armadillo from the G.I. Joe animated series.
*The Aerialbots conclude that humans are worthless after watching television. Should this tell us something?
*During the script stage, this episode had the sub-title "Fury of the Aerialbots".
*In this episode, Superion and Menasor are voiced by Frank Welker and Roger C. Carmel respectively, but from their next appearances onwards, the characters were both recast with new voices (Ed Gilbert and Regis Cordic, again respectively). Reflecting the fact that they're combiners, their voices are modulated to sound like they're a chorus of multiple voices - an effect that would be dropped after this episode.
*The shooting scripts for both installments of this two-parter contain several "deleted scenes" which expand greatly upon some of the more significant events in the story. In this episode:
**Omega Supreme repairs himself after his battle with Shockwave (deleted from Part 1, although this episode contains a vestigial reference to it, when Ironhide says: "Now all we've gotta do is hope that Shockwave didn't get the better of Omega Supreme!"), but is only able to do a rudimentary job, noting that his personal survival is "highly improbable." It is this which causes Omega to explode upon his return to Earth—he willingly puts himself in danger to bring the Autobots back so they can stop the Stunticons.
**Later in the episode, when the Aerialbots watch as Sparkplug works to repair Omega, Sparkplug turns on the young punks, explaining what caused Omega to explode, making them realize what he did for them, and what they owe the Autobots. This is very much in contrast to the complete non sequitur of the finished episode, in which the fact that Sparkplug can continue working when Ratchet can't, and then Silverbolt makes the Aerialbots somehow realize that they owe the Autobots their lives.
**Additionally, there are some extended scenes of Prime reaffirming that there are six Aerialbots, to squash the subtlety of the hint at Superion, and the Aerialbots watching more television.
*This is one of the very few episodes where Megatron insults Soundwave. Even then, Soundwave tripping on a branch ultimately leads to what Megatron believes to be a phenomenal discovery.
A newly orphaned debutante must protect her late father's work from Megatron. She finds Powerglide, and with him, safety...or perhaps...something...more?

Synopsis
One fine day at the skyscraper headquarters of Hybrid Technologies, the members of the board are gathered to celebrate the birthday of one Astoria Carlton-Ritz... their CEO. While the crusty board members complain about having to party, Astoria herself isn't too happy to be stuck with such a bunch of downers. However, the arrival and attack of the Conehead trio, Ramjet, Dirge, and Thrust, gives them all something much bigger to worry about.

Luckily, Powerglide just happens to be passing by, and observes the Coneheads attempting to kidnap Astoria. Powerglide successfully saves Astoria by having her grab on to a rope. He then proceeds to sweep through the city with her flying through the air at breakneck speed while clinging to a dangling rope with only her arm strength to keep Astoria from plummeting thousands of feet to her sure death. Powerglide eventually reels her up where she is stowed safely in his cockpit, amusingly with her large floppy purple hat still present.

After performing several evasive maneuvers that leave Astoria tumbling willy nilly around Powerglide's cabin, he manages to lose the Coneheads by ducking beneath an overpass. Powerglide introduces himself while they are waiting, but quickly finds himself rather put off by his overly gregarious human charge.

The duo manages to make it back to Sparkplug's workshop without any further mishap. Optimus Prime shares some pertinent information with Powerglide and Sparkplug and also reveals that the young heiress doesn't know about some of the ventures her company works on even though she is in charge of the company. Optimus Prime believes Megatron wants something from her so he orders Powerglide to escort her back to the Autobot Headquarters. On the way to the Ark, Astoria pipes up and says she is starving and wants to eat something.

Meantime in the Decepticon Base, Megatron is quite unhappy about the Coneheads' failure. He orders them to bring Astoria to him and this time without any failures.

After sating her hunger with amusement park hot dogs, Astoria is quick to amuse herself by jumping on the merry-go-around, much to Powerglide's consternation and bemusement. Powerglide tries to get the flighty girl to leave, but it's too late—the Coneheads come back for Astoria. Powerglide fights them off with some trick shots, and manages to escape with Astoria. But the Coneheads soon catch up, and Powerglide is rammed by Ramjet. Powerglide's left arm and left wing are injured and he is forced to make a crash landing. The Coneheads bury him in a rock pile, and take Astoria prisoner.

Powerglide breaks out from beneath the debris and attempts to set off in pursuit of the Coneheads. Despite his determination, he collapses due to his injuries. Ratchet and Wheeljack eventually arrive to haul him back to Headquarters for repairs.

After Ratchet does some basic repairs on him, Powerglide refuses any further repairs and goes to see Optimus Prime. While Powerglide is discussing his options with Optimus Prime, Teletraan I notifies them that Sky Spy just detected an unusual atmospheric disturbance over the Northern Atlantic and the source is 10 miles above the sea level. Optimus Prime thinks it is possibly the Decepticons' suborbital station. Impulsively, Powerglide rushes out of the Ark and flies directly to the Sky Platform and consequently into the energy storm.

Meanwhile, the Decepticons are interrogating Astoria about the energy formula left by her father. She claims that she knows nothing, so Megatron decides to use the psycho-probe in order to make her tell him about the formula. Seemingly cursed by Astoria's machine-jinxing aura, the psycho-probe keeps malfunctioning, provoking Megatron into such a rage that he eventually destroys the machine.

Hook reports that Powerglide is approaching the platform; the Decepticons go out to meet him. Megatron laughs at Powerglide and says he won't be able to break through the energy storm. But Astoria throws her necklace given by her father toward the energy-storm-generating tower and successfully destroys it. Not surprisingly, the necklace contains the energy formula.

The destroyed tower collapses the buildings on Sky Platform. The Sky Platform loses its control and starts to fall down. The Decepticons retreat to their headquarters. Both Powerglide and Astoria go into the control room. After a bit of a lover's tiff, Powerglide repairs the control panel, successfully slowing down the Sky Platform's descent and setting a new course. As the platform drops toward the ocean, the duo make good their escape.

The Decepticons return to base and congratulate themselves on their escape... only to find that the Sky Platform is falling directly onto their headquarters. Megatron orders the force fields to be activated, only for Soundwave to inform him they didn't install any. Megatron then yells at his crew as massive quantities of seawater rush into the base.

Back safe in the city, Powerglide asks Astoria why Megatron was so keen on kidnapping Astoria. She tells him it was because of the energy formula hidden in her necklace. Much to the private glee of the Autobots present, Powerglide asks rather shyly whether he could look her up next time he comes to town. Astoria is very happy and kisses him before she scurries off to her limo and is carted off. The minute Astoria is out of earshot, everyone has a good-natured laugh at Powerglide's expense. Thoroughly embarrassed, Powerglide threatens the would-be teasers with a good boxing around the circuits before he stomps into the building.

Once Powerglide is out of sight of the other Autobots, he pauses to open his chest plate, showing a series of LEDs flashing in the form of a stylized heart.
Notes
Production information
* First draft script: 6 June 1985

Continuity notes
*Gadgets and powers:
**Powerglide once again uses a telescopic video camera. This time it comes out of his front laser gun barrel, however. How does that work?
**Powerglide also has some means of tossing out a rope while in plane mode, and reeling it back in.
**Dirge has his own version of Starscream's infamous boob bombs; he fires a pair of missiles from ducts just below his "boobs" (the rectangular "intakes" on his chest.)
**Powerglide can deploy a human-sized parachute from his hand. Apparently it was not designed to be strapped onto the back, but rather the user is supposed to hang on to a baton sized handle for the entire descent. Powerglide clearly overestimates the gripping power of humans.
*Despite the fact that he has been seeing Carly for some time now, Spike unashamedly hits on Astoria, and promptly gets shot down for Powerglide. Hard. He had the same results with Nimue in “A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur’s Court”, yet he doesn't seem to have learned his lesson.
*Similarly, Powerglide was shown in the previous episode to this one to have an attachment to Moonracer, which he seems to have completely forgotten about.

Real-world references
*Astoria's name comes from two famous upscale hotels, the Waldorf Astoria New York and Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.
*"It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to!", as announced by Astoria early in the episode, is a lyric from the 1963 Lesley Gore song, "It's My Party (song)".
*Star Wars sound effects:
**The slamming Death Star door is used to soundtrack Powerglide's closing bottom hatch.
**An exploding X-Wing (maybe Red Leader crashing into the Death Star), is repurposed as Powerglide's engine noise as Astoria sends him spiraling out of control.
**Truncated X-Wing diving whine as the Decepticons flee from the sky platform.

Animation and technical errors
*One of the party guests at the beginning of the episode uses the British expletive "bloody", but doesn't have much of a British accent.
*Coloring errors:
**For just a frame or two, the top of Dirge's head turns blue instead of black as the Coneheads run to take off in pursuit of Powerglide.
**Dirge's eyes go from bright red to dark red as he leans forward while being berated by Megatron.
**Ramjet's face changes from dark gray to light gray as he delivers his "And we will GET the girl" line.
**Astoria's necklace is the same yellow as her dress after Ramjet hits Powerglide.
**"Don't be so hostile, okay?" Rumble's fists are gray instead of purple in this shot.
**"Subject's mind... completely empty!" Soundwave is missing his yellow stripes, and his cheek guards and eject button are blue instead of gray.
**"Computer error." Soundwave's shoulder cannon is missing its red stripe.
**"He'll never make it through that energy storm" - Megatron is missing the red on his waist.
**"Correction: problem is ours!" Rumble is colored like Bumblebee in this shot.
**"What force fields?" Soundwave's face is colored the same blue as the rest of his head, and he's missing his wrist stripes.
**As Astoria departs, Sparkplug has his hand on Spike's shoulder, but it's colored blue. The colorists seem to have gotten mixed up by Prime standing right behind Spike.
*The dialog doesn't quite seem to synch up with the events on-screen as Astoria wrecks all of Spike's equipment. Spike's "HEY!" doesn't correspond to any actual action, and Astoria continues speaking evenly and nonchalantly as she slams into a crane hard enough to knock an engine block loose.
*Ramjet's mouth doesn't move when he says "Please, let us try to find her again."
*Powerglide shoots a vending machine and blows a huge hole in it. This somehow causes a firehose-like torrent of soda to come shooting out of the machine.
*Powerglide's landing gears are all painted red when he lands after being rammed by Ramjet.
*Astoria totally has no legs as Thrust and Ramjet carry her off.

*Scale is always goofy in this show, but robot mode Thrust and Ramjet are quite visibly smaller than jet mode Dirge as they load Astoria into his cockpit, even though they're all the same size. Meanwhile, Ratchet is big enough in vehicle mode to hold both Wheeljack, a sportscar, and Powerglide, a plane - who in turn, is large enough to ferry around Astoria.
*Wheeljack's ears don't flash during his "You will, you will..." lines.
*In the first close-up of Hook aboard the sky platform, he's drawn with two eyes instead of an optic visor.
*As Soundwave activates the psycho-probe for the second time, one of the console buttons is layered over his hand.
*As Megatron laughs at Powerglide, his voice is missing its metallic flange.
*When Powerglide releases his hug from Astoria after she saves him, it appears as if he roughly pushes her away, sending her on a death tumble off the platform.

*When Powerglide hands Astoria his bizarre little parachute, her torso is completely missing. The background smoke and clouds are also frozen in place and Powerglide's Insignia is missing.
*As they enter the control room, Astoria phases through the wall, and Powerglide's face disappears for a second.

Continuity errors
*Powerglide's cockpit interior is shown at a half-way point between a single-seater (as seen in "Dinobot Island Part 1") and a gigantic cabin ("Blaster Blues").
*Likewise, his hatch is shown to be on the side of his fuselage, rather than the bubble canopy.
*Superhuman Astoria:
**With no seat restraints, Astoria should have been battered to pulp by all of Powerglide's maneuvering.
**Both Powerglide and the Coneheads repeatedly manhandle Astoria's arms as through they were made of rubber.
**Powerglide is actually quite abusive to the human he is charged with "saving" in this episode. Right after they meet, he throws her off his arm and onto the concrete so hard she bounces (thus answering one of the great mysteries of the ages.)
**Then he apparently throws her out of the control room on the sky platform. But hey, that's what she gets for having to be told twice, right, Powerglide?
**Astoria literally inhales the hotdog Powerglide gives her at the mini-amusement park. She chews(?) and swallows in under a second, something even Takeru Kobayashi would admire!
**She seemed able to breathe quite comfortably while outside the platform despite the fact it was floating ten miles up.
**It seems Astoria is also gifted with superhuman strength, as she is able to hold her own against the Coneheads, prevent Powerglide from taking her necklace, and rip a metal panel with her bare hands. Maybe Powerglide's abuse isn't as damaging as it appears.
*That is one tough merry-go-round, to be able to support a multi-ton metal robot. (But hey, it's totally worth it to see Powerglide riding a merry-go-round.)
*Astoria rips her dress to bandage Powerglide's arm wound from sand infection, but her dress is intact for the rest of the episode.
**The dress bandage is shown as Powerglide dives for cover from the coneheads, but is missing from every subsequent scene.
*Why didn't Soundwave telepathically scan Astoria's mind like he scanned Chip Chase back in "Roll for It"? Surely, Astoria couldn't have jinxed that ability too!
*Astoria correctly deduces that throwing a metal object into the apex of the energy-storm-generating tower will disable it. Yet she then looks around the MECHANICAL ISLAND and notes she finds “nothing” metallic. At the very least, she is surrounded by metal panels, which she easily rips apart in the next scene.
*Speaking of which, said tower seems unbelievably fragile. A large necklace thrown by a human causes a massive explosion. For something so essential to the entire structure, Megatron sure skimped out on making it durable.

Trivia
*David Wise, the writer of this episode, recycled its characters, plot, and set pieces wholesale for his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) episode "Poor Little Rich Turtle". Yes, even down to replicating the romance sub-plot, the merry-go-round fight sequence, the brain-sucking torture sequence, and the climax where the villains' base gets hilariously damaged. Good ole David Wise.
*While every other DVD release of the Generation 1 cartoon by Metrodome had been awarded the "U" rating (the United Kingdom's equivalent to the American "G"), the opening line of this episode, in which a party-goer professes to feel "an absolutely bloody fool", earned the box set containing it a "PG" rating for "mild language"!
*Powerglide's first line in the episode seems to revolve around the notion that a top scientist can't be so young.
*This was one of twelve episodes of the original cartoon released as audio adventures by the German company Karussell Musik und Video.
Hoist gets cast in a big Hollywood movie! Hijinks ensue.

Synopsis
Carly and Spike are on a drive through the countryside inside Hoist when they are overtaken by two speeding vehicles. They pursue and see one of the cars make an improbable crash off a cliff and land on top of the other. Before they can investigate, a man on the top of the cliff yells at them for ruining the shot. It turns out they've driven into the middle of a movie set. Hoist saves the imperiled drivers of the crashed cars, and the director is so impressed, he hires Hoist on the spot for his next movie. The director invites Spike and Carly along to visit the movie studio.

In the skies, Dirge is having trouble transporting a mysterious, heavy load. He crashes into the swamp set on the lot of Major Pictures. Megatron orders him to shut down, yells at Starscream for no good reason, then sends Astrotrain, Ramjet and Thrust to go after Dirge and retrieve the mysterious cargo.

Hoist arrives at Major Pictures for his big-screen debut, but gets the brush-off from the director. Before filming begins, Tracks, Warpath, Sunstreaker and Powerglide hone in on the set and ham it up for the director's attention. Strangely, the director is impressed by their hi-jinks and decides to hire them all for the action picture.

[[File:Hoisthollywoodmegsseesfilm.jpg|right|upright=1.1|thumb|Show biz kids<br>Making movies
of themselves]]

Movie work doesn't prove to be as glamorous as they had hoped. The bots wind up crashing into buildings and playing second fiddle to the human actors, Karen Fishook and Harold Edsel, while Hoist pulls them out of the smoldering wreckage after each take.

Disgruntled at their bit parts, the Autobots ask Hoist to lobby the director for better roles, but the director tells Hoist to get a bagel and sit tight. The Autobots take off just as Astrotrain and the other Coneheads show up to pull Dirge and the cargo out of the swamp set, all as the cameras roll.

Back at Decepticon headquarters, Megatron looks over the strange device. He isn't sure what it does; he only knows that Wheeljack built it, but he's sure that it is some kind of potent, deadly weapon. (He doesn't know Wheeljack very well, does he?) When switched on by Thrust, the device sparks and smokes, but does nothing else. Enraged, Megatron bashes Starscream. Astrotrain then reveals that he and the others were filmed by the humans when they retrieved the device. Megatron orders everyone to the studio to steal or destroy the footage so the device remains a secret.

At the studio, the director is viewing the robot footage and decides to revamp the script into a science fiction epic blockbuster called Attack of the Alien Robots, to the dismay of the human cast. He calls the Autobots to return with the promise of better parts. Once back, the director has the Autobots don googly-eyed, buck-toothed alien masks and stomp around after the female lead. For some reason, the Autobots still don't like their parts as monsters from space.

Making their rounds, Spike and Carly find the room where the film negatives are stored and discover that someone has stolen scenes from the movie. That someone was Starscream, but Soundwave reports to Megatron that the original negative still exists. Megatron pounds on Starscream again, this time ripping wires out of his chest! He then orders the others to get the negative.

Meanwhile, the Autobots are filming another scene with pyrotechnics, which have been switched for actual explosives by Rumble. Spike and Carly are in a screening room watching a new print of the stolen footage of the Decepticons and the device. Midway through the screening, Soundwave rips through the screen and destroys the projector. Spike and Carly rush to the film vault to get the original before the Decepticons do, but are interrupted by Megatron. Carly fools him by giving him an empty film canister, and they race around the studio lot with the Decepticons close on their heels. They finally meet up with Hoist, who has a plan.

Megatron and the others finally catch up and find the Autobots on a movie set. Hoist threatens to drop the humans and the film into a vat of flesh-eating lava if the ‘Cons don’t withdraw. Megatron says he won’t do it, but Hoist drops them in. Content that the film is gone, the Decepticons retreat. Hoist then lifts Spike and Carly from the “lava”, which is just bubbly, muddy water mixed with special effects.

The Autobots show the film to Wheeljack in the screening room. The Autobot scientist laughs at Megatron because the device Megatron wanted so much is actually worthless. Impressed with Hoist's performance at the lava pit, the director offers him the leading part in a new film, but Hoist declines, saying that his duty as an Autobot comes first, no matter how unglamorous it is.
Animation and technical errors
*Coloring errors:
**Spike's hair is colored orange in the first shot of him riding in Hoist's cab.
**One of Dirge's smaller fins is gray instead of gold after he crashes into the swamp.
**One panel of Powerglide's face is red instead of gray as he gripes about all the crashes.
**In the swamp, when Ramjet transforms and takes off, he is given Thrust's colors. He's also standing where Thrust had been a moment earlier.
**Ramjet's guns are white instead of dark gray as Thrust activates the device.
**When Megatron grabs Starscream after he learns the negative is still in existence, Starscream's hips turn white, but they immediately turn back to their normal red when he gets picked up.
**After Megatron rips Starscream a new one, Soundwave is colored like Perceptor.
**Aboard the space ship set, Sunstreaker is colored light gray where he should be yellow.
<!-- those are anime-style speed lines, not marks on the road * As the cars speed past Hoist, the ground has lines on it in a few shots even though they're on an unpaved cliffside. -->
*Warpath "sharpshoots" at nothing! The shot causes some kind of energy effect to radiate out of thin air.
*As the director announces the Autobots will be his stunt vehicles, Spike's "Tracks!" line is randomly played over again.
*As the director notes he wants something "extra," his glasses are missing their earpieces for a moment.
*A number of sound effects are missing or played at oddly low volume:
**Tracks drives off the building set and changes to his flight mode without the transformation sound.
**Thrust and Ramjet land at the swamp set without any sound effect at all.
**The usual "clunk" sound is barely audible as Megatron punches Starscream.
**The electrical sounds of Starscream shorting out after Megatron brutalizes him are almost inaudible.
**When the mechanical dinosaurs explode from Rumble's blasts, there are no explosion sounds.
*Thrust's mouth is missing as he and Ramjet set down the device.
*Megatron, Starscream (in robot mode!) and Soundwave leave the Decepticon base; the very next shot shows Megatron, Soundwave and three jets (one could be Starscream, but there was no transformation sound).
*Karen Fishook's attempt to console her co-star is cut off in mid-sentence by the scene edit.
*The "CLOSED" sign on the studio the Decepticons are in reads "CLLOSE".
*When Megatron is examining a reel of film, the reel is out of scale from a normal film reel.
*Warpath and Powerglide are missing their face plates after the explosion scene.

*Spike yells, "DUCK!" when Soundwave bursts through the theater screen, but he and Carly run away instead.
*Soundwave's hand cannon repeatedly uses a sound effect that's not the usual Decepticon laser noise.
*As usual, human buildings comfortably accommodate a full-size Transformer, such as Megatron or Soundwave.
*Just before they run into Megatron, Spike and Carly appear to be mouthing something, but there's no dialogue.
*When Soundwave tells Carly and Spike to "Surrender the negative," he appears as if he's sliding forward in the next scene, even though he's walking towards them, as evidenced by the sound of his footsteps.
*Megatron, Soundwave and Rumble tear through a jungle background, but it's still there as they walk through the tear.
*When Spike and Carly emerge from the cave, they are about half the height of Megatron.
*As Megatron jumps out of the cave, his head is about a third the size it should be, but returns to normal size once he lands.
*As the director offers Hoist a role in his next movie, the shots show light brown walls around them, but in the last shot of the episode, the theater is back to dark blue again.
*Near the end of the episode, Warpath says "You tell him Hoist, yeah," but Hoist's mouthplate is moving in sync with the words, and his body language reflects the dialogue. A second later, Hoist is moving around again during Powerglide's line. (Maybe really he is just that good an actor.)
*During the last shot of the Autobots congratulating Hoist, Sunstreaker is placed too high in the cel, making him appear to be floating (and clipping through the humans!).

Continuity errors
*Improbable viewpoints:
**From Decepticon Headquarters, Megatron and Starscream get a quarter-angle shot of Dirge flying along as he calls in his mayday.
**Then they have a nicely-framed view of him crashed in the swamp, seconds after it happens.
*Not an error per se, but we never do find out exactly why Megatron blames Starscream for Dirge's crash.
*Nor is it clear why Dirge struggles to carry the device, while Ramjet seems to have no trouble with it.
*For that matter, why was Dirge the right choice to literally shuttle the device through space to Earth from Cybertron, when the Decepticons have the space bridge or Astrotrain, whose function is - again, literally - "Decepticon Military Transport"?
*In the time it takes for Astrotrain, Ramjet, and Thrust to arrive at the studio to fish out Dirge and retrieve Wheeljack's gadget, a lot of events took place. Hoist arrives at the studio, four other Autobots arrive, four extra scenes are written and filmed, the director finds Dirge in the swamp set, and a bridge is built around the Conehead, at which point the director calls wrap for the day. Even if the three Decepticons sent to recover the device flew from coast to coast, they could have arrived at the studio in about three hours. Either it was a short work day at the studio, or Astrotrain, Ramjet, and Thrust ran into some problems.
*What exactly is this movie about, anyway? Plane crash, kissing. Car crash, kissing. Another car crash, kissing.
*The production assistant, not to mention the entire rest of the production staff, is surprisingly uninterested in the film theft, despite the director's fear that "somebody is deliberately trying to shut down production. I want to know who it is!" as only Carly and Spike are seen viewing the new print.
*Hoist appears to be unfamiliar with - yet quite adamant about - how actual lava, at 700-1200&nbsp;°C, interacts with human flesh.

Trivia
*This is one of four pre-movie episodes that doesn't feature Optimus Prime.
*Due to the writer's tendency to use Starscream as a Waspinator-ish comedy relief, Megatron is incredibly abusive toward Starscream in this episode...well, more than usual. He punches him, throws him around, pulls wires from his chest, and pretty much does everything short of killing him. Incidentally, Starscream is absent from the next few episodes; Megatron must have done some real damage.
*When the Autobots are role-playing the aliens chasing the actress, Sunstreaker looks like he's imitating the walk of Frankenstein's monster from early horror movies.
*When the Autobots are sitting in director's chairs with their names written on the backs, Tracks's chair is spelled "Trucks". This could be an extension of the gag where the director constantly gets Hoist's name wrong - although on Hoist's chair, his name is spelled correctly! Considering how common mangled English lettering is in the cartoon's backgrounds, it may be an outright error (presumably stemming from a misunderstanding on the part of Japanese animators, as the English short "a" and short "u" sounds are identical to the Japanese ear). The world may never know.
*This was one of twelve episodes of the original cartoon released as audio adventures by the German company Karussell Musik und Video.
*We never do find out what Wheeljack's device is supposed to do.
