'''Sideswipe''' is not nearly as much of a sociopath as his [[Relatives|brother]] [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]], but he is every bit as skillful. He's more into battle for the sport of it. A bit of a jock, Sideswipe most craves a glorious fight to the finish as a test of his mettle.

There is a reckless edge to Sideswipe's tactics. He makes rash decisions that may endanger him, all in the name of possible victory. Cheating is also not out of the question. When everything is on the line, for Sideswipe, nothing is out of the question. Over time, his reckless attitude has not changed. However, his cause has; once in it solely for the glory, now he's driven by the desire to defend freedom and the innocent.

Sideswipe, along with his brother Sunstreaker, was part of the original crew of [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]]'s [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]. When the [[Decepticon]]s attacked the ship, it crashed on [[Earth]], and Sideswipe, along with the rest of the combatants, lay dormant for 4 million years. When the [[Mount St. Hilary|volcano]] that housed the Ark erupted, the Ark's internal mechanisms revived all Transformers, making no distinction between [[Autobot]] and Decepticon. When the Autobots went to retrieve their fallen comrade [[Bumblebee (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Bumblebee]] from [[Sparkplug Witwicky]]'s [[S. Against his brother's better judgment, Sideswipe employed his [[Transformer fuel|fuel]]-gobbling [[Jet pack|rocket backpack]] to take the fight right to the Decepticon jets, blinding [[Thundercracker (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Thundercracker]] with his [[flare gun]]. Sideswipe was present when it was discovered that the human [[Sparkplug Witwicky]] had given the Decepticons the fuel they needed to defeat the Autobots. Soon afterwards he was interred into one of the Ark's [[Tubes of Transference]], using his fuel to bolster the power of Optimus Prime, [[Huffer (G1)|Huffer]], [[Ironhide (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Ironhide]], [[Bluestreak (G1)|Bluestreak]] and Mirage as the Autobots' last line of defence. Although they were able to defeat [[Megatron (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Megatron]]'s forces, they didn't count on the reappearance of [[Shockwave (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Shockwave]], who took over the Ark and deactivated all the Autobots in the ship. {{storylink|The Last Stand}} Along with his fellow Autobots, Sideswipe was left hanging from the Ark's ceiling like a slab of beef. {{storylink|The New Order}} Upon infiltrating the Ark, [[Ratchet (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Ratchet]] beheld his fellow Autobot in this sad state. {{storylink|Warrior School!}} After the medic regained control of the Ark for the Autobots, he was able to revive Sideswipe to full functionality in short order, and their new deal for fuel with [[G.B. Though Shockwave was ultimately evicted from the Ark, he still had Optimus Prime's head held captive in his [[Blackrock Aerospace Assembly Plant Number One|Blackrock Aerospace Plant headquarters]]. When the Autobots overheard that Optimus Prime's head had outlived its usefulness and would be disposed of, Sideswipe was part of the large group of Autobots who departed the Ark to rendezvous with the drop-off point. {{storylink|Brainstorm!}} Sure enough, the Decepticon drone [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]] approached with the head, though Sideswipe initially proposed blowing it out of the sky. [[Prowl (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Prowl]]'s caution at first seemed prudent, as Jetfire dropped Prime's head into the swamp in front of them, but their minds changed after they waded into the swamp, retrieved the head, and placed it on Prime's body. The head was in fact a Decepticon decoy that took control of Prime's body and attacked them. On top of that, a strike team led by Soundwave quickly joined them, and Sideswipe soon found himself at the mercy of [[Ravage (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Ravage]], who began tearing out his back with his jaws. Sideswipe was next seen in Ratchet's repair bay along with several others. Ratchet remarked to Optimus Prime that some of them might never be battle-capable again. Years later, Sideswipe was seen again on board the Ark when the new Autobot leader Grimlock threatened the lives of some [[Spacehikers|human children]] to smoke out the "traitor" [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]]. {{storylink|Spacehikers!}} Soon after, he left the Ark with the rest of its crew to watch the battle between Blaster and Grimlock on Earth's [[Moon (moon)|moon]]. During a conflict with the lingering forces of Bludgeon, Sideswipe and the Autobots were rushed off-world by the [[Guardian (G2)|guardian]] of an ancient civilization. {{storylink|Ghosts}}

The war seemingly over, Sideswipe joined the [[Firestormer]]s, a group of Autobots who aimed to hunt down the last few pockets of Decepticon resistance. He, [[Broadside (G1)|Broadside]], [[Hound (G1)|Hound]], [[Blades (G1)|Blades]], and the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]] attacked Decepticon [[Nexus Seven|Outpost B-67]], where they met [[Outpost B-67 exo-structuring party|great numbers]] but minimal resistance. He expected the liberated citizens of Nexus Seven to be more grateful, but Hound pointed out that their rescuees looked more frightened than pleased, and blamed their group's bloodthirstiness.

But the Firestormers' quest led them to the staggering discovery that these scattered Decepticon outposts were actually just the tip of the iceberg. There were just seventeen conquered and recolonized planets in that sector of space, suggesting that there was something bigger on the horizon than the remnants of [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]]'s old team. After [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] was called to hear this news from Sideswipe and the other Firestormers, they were suddenly attacked and captured by a ship in orbit. Sideswipe and the others were put in prison cells aboard the starship ''[[Twilight (G2)|Twilight]]'', which was under the command of [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]], the [[Liege Centuro]] of a forgotten race of Transformers. This revelation momentarily shook Optimus Prime's resolve, but after being brought back to his senses by [[Grimlock (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Grimlock]], the two Autobots freed Sideswipe and the others from their cells. Sideswipe was present when the Autobots met Jhiaxus's Decepticons in battle on a planet within the [[K'tord Nebula]]. At first, tempers merely flared, but soon both sides lost themselves in a violent, bloody rage. Before they were completely lost to their baser instincts, the source of their behavior was discovered to be tar-like emotional parasites. Grimlock, disobeying Optimus Prime's orders, led a covert team onto the [[Cybertronian (faction)|Cybertronian Empire]] ship ''[[Twilight (G2)|Twilight]]'' to defeat [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]] and his army of "evolved Decepticons". Sideswipe was wary of their plan to steal a ship and slip on board, but Grimlock assured him that the plan was foolproof. Grimlock changed his tune when they soon learned that they were led into a trap, resulting in [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]]'s death and the Autobots' capture. Sideswipe and the others were rounded up onto a shuttle to be inspected by the [[Liege Maximo]], but managed to escape their fate with assistance from Optimus Prime. {{storylink|Devices and Desires! Later, while Optimus Prime and [[Megatron (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Megatron]] were discussing an alliance against Jhiaxus's Cybertronians, Sideswipe interrupted to tell them that they had received a distress signal from the planet [[Ethos]]. {{storylink|Escalation!|Tales of Earth Part Five}} Sure enough, upon arrival, the Autobots found an advanced civilization in ruins, but managed to repel the Cybertronians thanks to their new Decepticon allies. {{storylink|Escalation!}}

Years later, Sideswipe was part of [[Jazz (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Jazz]]'s Special Commando Unit, summoned to Earth along with Optimus Prime by [[Grimlock (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Grimlock]] when [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] began open war on the humans. Prime decided to go after Bludgeon himself, and he assigned Jazz, Sideswipe and [[Skram (G2)|Skram]] to take down one Decepticon strike team at a time because the Decepticon forces were spread very thin. While still in [[alternate mode|vehicle mode]], Sideswipe shot [[Flamefeather (G1)|Flamefeather]] in the crotch, then transformed and hoped aloud that Prime would be okay in the face of Bludgeon's mysterious powers. {{storylink|War Without End (issue)|War Without End}}

When the [[Skyscorcher]]s left in the middle of battle, Jazz concluded they had another target to go after—which he and Sideswipe simultaneously realized to be Optimus Prime! An original member of the Autobots when they crash-landed on Earth, Sideswipe was a cool guy with jack-hammer arms, a rocket pack and little in the way of personality. Those accessories, though.

In a [[splinter timeline]] Sideswipe had more adventures, including one where he gained a new [[Binaltech]] body until [[time travel]] said otherwise. He continued serving the Autobots well into the year [[2011]], where he was stationed on both [[Athenia]] and Earth simultaneously, but nobody noticed. In the years that followed, he would mature and shed his rebellious nature, taking on covert missions out of a sense of duty rather than a desire to show off.

Sideswipe was amongst the thirty-five Autobots active on Earth. When the Autobots engaged The Devastator for the very first time, Sunstreaker lead Sideswipe, Windcharger, Jazz and Mirage in the initial charge against him. Their attack was ineffective, and they were blasted away by the mighty gestalt. {{storylink|Battle for Earth}}

Upon hearing that his "twin Autobot" had been captured by the Decepticons, Sideswipe flew into a rage and vowed to rescue Sunstreaker himself. [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] advised Sideswipe to take [[Sludge (G1)|Sludge]] and [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] with him, as they would surely encounter [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] within the Decepticons' headquarters. The three Autobots made their way towards Decepticon territory, encountering numerous traps along the road. Sideswipe was almost done in by a land mine, but managed to transform in time to avoid being seriously damaged. When the trio arrived at the Decepticon camp, another obstacle presented itself in the form of a duo of Decepticon guards. Making short work of these two, Sideswipe's group entered the Decepticon basewhere they came face-to-face against Devastator, as anticipated. Despite their best efforts, the Autobots were overpowered by Devastator, and put in a holding cell alongside Sunstreaker. Later, Megatron announced that the Autobots had agreed to surrender, and brought out his prisoner to look upon the Autobots' peace offering; a life-size statue of Devastator. The surrender turned out to be a ruse however, and Autobot reinforcements burst forth from within the Devastator statue. Sideswipe joined the battle between Autobots and Decepticons that followed. The Autobots were ultimately victorious, and Sideswipe was amongst the Autobots still standing in the aftermath. A long time ago, on the planet Cybertron, Sideswipe helped load a particularly large shipment of Energon onto the Ark. The shipment would eventually become lost when the Ark crashlanded into Mt. St. Hillary. {{storylink|The Lost Treasure of Cybertron}}

With Sparkplug acting as their referee, Sideswipe and Bluestreak raced one another in order to determine who was the fastest. The race ended in a tie, with Sparkplug declaring them both winners. Just then, Thundercracker and Starscream swooped down onto the trio, and cast [[Sleep Net]]s unto them, rendering them unconscious. Sideswipe was brought to Megatron's newly constructed prison, and was incarcerated within. Luckily, Bumblebee had not been captured, and managed to free the other Autobots. Sideswipe was one of the many Autobots who prevented the Decepticons from killing Sparkplug and Buster on their latest attempt on the humans' lives. He later helped the Autobots protecting the Hoover Dam. {{storylink|The Deadly Fuel Shortage}}

Sideswipe was part of the Autobot convoy that followed Optimus Prime into battle when it was discovered that the Decepticons were using a [[molecular transfer device]] to steal fuel all around the globe. {{storylink|Summertime Coloring Book}}

Sideswipe polished himself as he looked on at Gears casually lifting an elephant over his head. Later, when Gears had fallen into a Decepticon trap and gotten himself crushed, Sideswipe, Ratchet and Mirage somehow instantly knew of the situation and showed up on the scene. Sideswipe kicked up some dust into Ravage's joints, paralyzing the Decepticons. Sideswipe (or Sunstreaker) was part of a small strike team of Autobots assembled by Ultra Magnus to help the Dinobots, who were currently engaged in battle against the Decepticons, just outside of Autobot City. Upon awakening on Earth after being offline for about 65 million years, Sideswipe met Sparkplug and his son Spike. With the Decepticons still not in the know of what forms the Autobots had taken, Sideswipe was one of the troops that Optimus led into the desert in order to ambush their enemies. Though they successfully took by surprise a squadron of Decepticons, the Autobots had not anticipated a second group flying in from the opposite direction. Thanks to a warning from Spike and Sparkplug, the Autobots managed to fend off the Decepticons, and came to accept Earth as their new home. {{storylink|Battle for Cybertron}}

Sideswipe was surprised to find himself accused of destroying the [[Nova Suspension Bridge]]. Prowl later discovered that the Sideswipe who had destroyed the bridge was in fact a clone controlled by Megatron. Sideswipe was one of the group of Autobots who explored for energy in [[South America]], and engaged in a battle with the Decepticons on [[Mount Sheelah]] shortly before the volcano erupted. {{storylink|Terror of Mount Sheelah}} After a hard day's work repairing the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]], he and the other Autobots were relaxing and watching [[television]] when they learned the Decepticons had started kidnapping humans. Following the Decepticons to [[Stanley Lake]] dam, Sideswipe used his flare gun to lure them out in front of the dam. If Optimus Prime chose to immediately attack the Dinobots without a real plan, Sideswipe responded to Prime's order to, "Bring them down fast and hard," by blasting [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]], who just wouldn't go down. Before the war, Sideswipe was a trader who liked to con his customers. {{storylink|Transformers: The Ultimate Guide|The Ultimate Guide}} He was one of the few Autobots to continue operating under that title during the [[Dark Ages]] of Cybertron, after Optimus Prime and Megatron had both disappeared into a prototype space-bridge. {{storylink|Fragmentation (G1)|Fragmentation}} Sideswipe was one of the elite warriors serving under [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] and as such was chosen for the mission that sent him against the newly constructed Decepticon battle station, [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]]. Though the Autobots believed they would be able to find the station before it was fully operational, Trypticon revealed himself to already be battle-ready. {{storylink|Devastation}} Despite throwing everything they had at the titan, the Autobots weren't able to even slow it down. Prowl ordered his troops to try and outrun Trypticon, which Sideswipe misinterpreted as meaning they would try to "run it in circles and then pop it one in the exhaust vent." Sideswipe was part of Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human-Autobot effort to defeat the Earth-bounded Decepticons. At the end it was a success, and the captured Decepticons along with the Autobots and a human crew departed Earth en route to Cybertron in the ''[[Ark II]]''. The ship, however, was sabotaged and exploded upon liftoff.

A few years later, Megatron and other Transformers, including Autobots, were seen causing havoc. It was discovered that [[Lazarus]], a scientist who participated in the ''Ark II'' project, was responsible for the sabotage of the ship and the resurrection of several Transformers under his control via technological tampering. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 1|Prime Directive #1}}

[[Robert Hallo|General Hallo]] of the [[United States military|US military]] contacted [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] to ask him if he could do something to help them reactivate Optimus Prime, whom they had recovered locked in a state of stasis. Spike managed to reactivate Optimus with a portion of the [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]] that Optimus had given him prior the ill-fated journey of the ''Ark II''. Sideswipe accepted the new task at hand and fought alongside his brother when the Autobots faced the Decepticons at Lazarus' ruined base (punching Starscream in the face for attacking Wheeljack) before Hallo betrayed the Autobots by attempting to destroy both factions with a nuclear weapon. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 3|Prime Directive #3}} The Autobots survived when Megatron's technovirus absorbed the blast, and Sideswipe helped his comrades recover the captive Autobots imprisoned inside the base.

The Autobots were entrenched against Megatron's forces when agents from the united Cybertron led by Shockwave arrived on Earth. Despite using his pile-drivers to send some of these attackers for a tumble, Sideswipe found himself severely overpowered by the newcomers, along with the rest of the Autobots. He and the others retreated as the Decepticons were taken in as war criminals. Optimus Prime split his forces so that their wounded could be tended to while a small scouting party was sent out to investigate further Shockwave and his followers. Sideswipe was among those who returned to the Ark, where the Autobots discussed whether they could take Shockwave's word at face value. {{storylink|New World Order}} As Prime and many other Autobots traveled back to Cybertron with Shockwave, [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and their crew, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker remained on Earth with several other Autobots under Jazz's command. {{storylink|Brothers' Burden}}

After the end of Shockwave's despotic rule over Cybertron, the Autobots on Cybertron made contact with Sideswipe's crew for an update and promised to send supplies. {{storylink|Generation 1 issue 0|Generation 1 #0}} Unfortunately, Starscream arrived on Earth first, backed up by a small cadre of soldiers. Sideswipe and company managed to stave off an initial attack from the Decepticons, only for Starscream to unleash his trump card on the battlefield: [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]]. During their trip out into the field, Sideswipe game the much less experienced [[Bumper (G1)|Bumper]] a hard time for his fretting and worrying, but rushed to the little guy's rescue after he was attacked within the town's movie theater. As he did so, the Autobots found out what they were dealing with was an outbreak of [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]]. {{storylink|Infestation (Dreamwave)|Infestation}} Sideswipe and Sunstreaker wound up in an underground hatching chamber, filled with Insecticon eggs. Wandering about while his brother contemplated the hatchery, Sideswipe came upon some fully-grown Insecticon clones and attacked them... only to inadvertently blind himself by bringing down a wall, allowing light to flood in and overwhelm his night-vision. Though Sunstreaker came to his rescue, the two brother wound up prisoners of the Insecticons nonetheless. Thankfully, Bumper, who had since found his courage, freed Sideswipe and Sunstreaker in time for them to participate in their team's last stand against the enemy swarm. Sideswipe took out Shrapnel in the fight by toppling an entire building atop of him. But the conflict culminated with the Autobots against an enemy they couldn't just beat down: the mind-controlled townspeople. Bumper once more came to his team's rescue by downing Bombshell, disabling his mind-control network over the town, allowing an Autobot victory. {{storylink|Extermination}}

Along with several other Transformers, the dormant Sideswipe was found on the crashed ''Ark'' by [[Cobra]], a human terrorist organization who soon reprogrammed the alien robots to serve them. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were rebuilt into Cobra [[Stinger (G.I. Joe)|Stingers]] and sent to assault the [[SPS Research Facility]] alongside [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and his [[Decepticon Mini-Cassette|minions]]. The two brothers didn't succeed in their mission, though, as they were rammed aside by [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] while charging at the building and were eventually ordered to retreat. {{storylink|G.I. On [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], the Autobots are busy converting old drone rockets into [[Earth]] planes. Once their redesigns are complete, they take the ships to [[Vector Sigma]]. However, without the [[Key to Vector Sigma]], which is in the possession of [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]], they cannot activate the supercomputer and give Cybertronic personalities to the new bots. [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]], however, intends to activate it by merging his lifeforce with the computer. [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] tries to stop him, but Alpha Trion merges with the supercomputer. It gives life to the new [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]]: [[Silverbolt (G1)|Silverbolt]], [[Slingshot (G1)|Slingshot]], [[Skydive (G1 Aerialbot)|Skydive]], [[Fireflight (G1)|Fireflight]], and [[Air Raid (G1)|Air Raid]].

The Autobots and Aerialbots prepare to leave, but Alpha Trion gives Optimus a warning: the Key to Vector Sigma will have different properties on Earth, which could destroy the planet. However, [[Shockwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Shockwave]] overhears this. Heading back to the surface, the Autobots and Aerialbots encounter more [[Centurion droid]]s, but the Aerialbots are able to get them to [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]]. Omega returns them to Earth, but suddenly explodes.

[[Ratchet (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Ratchet]], [[Wheeljack (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Wheeljack]], and [[Sparkplug Witwicky]] begin working to restore Omega, while the Autobots and Aerialbots head toward the base with the [[superfuel]]. Shockwave contacts Megatron, informing him of the recent developments on Cybertron, and the Key's power, so Megatron decides to run some tests. At the base, the [[human]]s believe that the Autobots attacked them, and open fire. Slingshot is pissed, but [[Ironhide (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Ironhide]] reminds them that they are simply confused. Suddenly, they detect high speed movement. Optimus initially believes that it's [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] and the [[Seeker (body-type)|jets]], but it's the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]], who quickly overwhelm the Autobots, forcing the Aerialbots to take to the air. Slingshot is attacked by [[Motormaster (G1)|Motormaster]]. Silverbolt goes to save him, but suddenly panics. Megatron, still testing the Key, orders the Stunticons to return to base.

However, during the tests, [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]] trips and drops the Key, causing it to discharge its energy... turning the ground below it into metal. Megatron realizes that the Key can not only give life to machines, but also turn organic matter into metal. He now has a new plan—convert Earth into a new Cybertron.

Back at the base, the Aerialbots are unimpressed with the Autobots and disgusted with the humans they are supposed to defend. Optimus confronts Silverbolt about his panic, and learns that Silverbolt is afraid of heights. In a questionable command decision, Optimus appoints Silverbolt to be Aerialbot leader, hoping it will give him something to focus on other than fear. Soon, [[Teletraan I]] detects the energy emissions from the Key, and its result. The [[Decepticon]]s are heading toward [[Seattle]], and the Autobots roll out. Meanwhile, Silverbolt attempts to convince the Aerialbots to return to the [[Ark (G1)|base]], saying that if they're the best, they should run the place. He shows them that the Decepticons will destroy them, showing how bad they are. He also shows the humans' capacity for compassion, letting them see how Sparkplug continues to work on Omega while Ratchet goes to recharge. Convinced, the Aerialbots move out.

Near Seattle, the Stunticons are overwhelming the Autobots, with Optimus Prime about to be crushed to death, when the Aerialbots arrive and save the Autobot leader. Megatron and Optimus reveal their last aces in the hole, ordering the Stunticons and Aerialbots to form [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] and [[Superion (G1)|Superion]], respectively. Menasor has the strength advantage, but Omega Supreme arrives, and turns the tide. The Decepticons retreat with the Key, but Silverbolt races after Megatron, knocking the Key from his hand and switching to [[robot mode]] to destroy it. Silverbolt believes he's about to go splat, but Slingshot manages to save him. The Aerialbots are convinced to join the Autobots, while Optimus appears convinced that Alpha Trion made the right choice.

**As Omega watches the Aerialbots fly out of the tunnel, the animators use the cheatsy route of coloring his visor a solid yellow, rather than drawing his face underneath it.

*Slingshot is drawn mouthing Silverbolt's line about responsibility, and then Silverbolt continues gesticulating randomly while Slingshot delivers a lengthy retort.

====Rhino DVD release====
The [[Rhino Entertainment|Kid Rhino]] release of this episode had errors not present in the original broadcast version, due to their use of incomplete film masters:

*When Silverbolt has his back to the camera as tries to put his point of view to Slingshot, his dialogue is accompanied with a fairly random series of gesticulations. The broadcast master featured a re-animated version of this sequence with Silverbolt now gesturing more appropriately in time with his dialogue. This short sequence was not corrected for the [[Shout! Factory]] DVD release.
*Once the key is destroyed towards the end of the episode, the forest is shown turning into metal, rather than returning to normal. This shot was corrected on broadcast, and the Shout! Factory version restores the corrected shot from the broadcast master.

===Continuity errors===

*The shuttlecraft that the Autobots rebuild are vastly larger than the Aerialbots they become.
*The Autobots are in a rush to rebuild Omega Supreme, correct? So why in the world does Optimus Prime have Wheeljack ''and'' Hoist - both fix-it men - come with him to visit the Earth naval base? Shouldn't they be at headquarters, trying to help to rebuild Omega? Wheeljack can be briefly seen helping Ratchet after the fight with the Stunticons.
*At one point during the battle, Wildrider is speeding towards Blaster. Blaster tells Wildrider to "Eat asphalt, chump!" despite the fact that his sonic blasts are ripping apart completely unpaved earth.
*Even more than most episodes, this one calls attention to the oddity of Omega Supreme's transformation. His rocket mode is the only part of him that travels through space; yet when he gets wherever he's going, he can always transform to his full robot mode, including all the bits he left behind on Earth. In this ep, Omega actually fires off his arms from his robot mode while running along - clearly leaving behind an armless robot on Cybertron!
*On-screen, Omega Supreme's explosion comes off as completely random - seemingly caused by nothing more than a random hole in his side whose cause is unknown to us. See the Trivia notes below for the lost explanation.
*Megatron said that the Key to Vector Sigma "de-energizes matter, turns it into metal". We can buy the turns-it-into-metal bit as handwaving techno science stuff... but removing energy from matter doesn't turn it into metal. (And if it did - wouldn't Megatron be stuck with an energyless world?)
*The Autobots might fare better against the Stunticons if they would ''stop and shoot them'' instead of driving around in circles. Y'know, shooting? That thing that works against all the other Decepticons all the time?
*Menasor rips the top floors off a building and smashes Superion with it. Hope the attack happened on a weekend, 'cause otherwise a bunch of people just ''died''!
*Silverbolt doesn't even ''try'' to get out of his supposedly-fatal plunge at the end! Woulda ruined the pathos, we suppose.

*During the script stage, this episode had the sub-title "Fury of the Aerialbots".
*In this episode, Superion and Menasor are voiced by [[Frank Welker]] and [[Roger C. Carmel]] respectively, but from their next appearances onwards, the characters were both recast with new voices ([[Ed Gilbert]] and [[Regis Cordic]], again respectively). Reflecting the fact that they're combiners, their voices are modulated to sound like they're a chorus of multiple voices - an effect that would be dropped after this episode.
*The shooting scripts for both installments of this two-parter contain several "deleted scenes" which expand greatly upon some of the more significant events in the story. In this episode:
**Omega Supreme repairs himself after his battle with Shockwave (deleted from Part 1, although this episode contains a vestigial reference to it, when Ironhide says: "Now all we've gotta do is hope that Shockwave didn't get the better of Omega Supreme!"), but is only able to do a rudimentary job, noting that his personal survival is "highly improbable." It is ''this'' which causes Omega to explode upon his return to Earth—he willingly puts himself in danger to bring the Autobots back so they can stop the Stunticons.
**Later in the episode, when the Aerialbots watch as Sparkplug works to repair Omega, Sparkplug turns on the young punks, explaining what caused Omega to explode, making them realize what he did for them, and what they owe the Autobots. This is very much in contrast to the complete non sequitur of the finished episode, in which the fact that Sparkplug can continue working when Ratchet can't, and then Silverbolt makes the Aerialbots somehow realize that they owe the Autobots their lives.
**Additionally, there are some extended scenes of Prime reaffirming that there are six Aerialbots, to squash the subtlety of the hint at Superion, and the Aerialbots watching more television.
*This is one of the very few episodes where Megatron insults Soundwave. Even then, Soundwave tripping on a branch ultimately leads to what Megatron believes to be a phenomenal discovery.

==Synopsis==

One fine day at the skyscraper headquarters of [[Hybrid Technologies]], the members of the board are gathered to celebrate the [[birthday]] of one [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]]... their CEO. While the crusty board members complain about having to party, Astoria herself isn't too happy to be stuck with such a bunch of downers. However, the arrival and attack of the Conehead trio, [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]], [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]], and [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]], gives them all something much bigger to worry about.

Luckily, [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] just happens to be passing by, and observes the Coneheads attempting to kidnap Astoria. Powerglide successfully saves Astoria by having her grab on to a rope. He then proceeds to sweep through the city with her flying through the air at breakneck speed while clinging to a dangling rope with only her arm strength to keep Astoria from plummeting thousands of feet to her sure death. Powerglide eventually reels her up where she is stowed safely in his cockpit, amusingly with her large floppy purple hat still present.

After performing several evasive maneuvers that leave Astoria tumbling willy nilly around Powerglide's cabin, he manages to lose the Coneheads by ducking beneath an overpass. Powerglide introduces himself while they are waiting, but quickly finds himself rather put off by his overly gregarious human charge.

The duo manages to make it back to [[Sparkplug Witwicky|Sparkplug]]'s workshop without any further mishap. [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] shares some pertinent information with Powerglide and Sparkplug and also reveals that the young heiress doesn't know about some of the ventures her company works on even though she is in charge of the company. Optimus Prime believes [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]] wants something from her so he orders Powerglide to escort her back to the [[Ark (G1)|Autobot Headquarters]]. On the way to the Ark, Astoria pipes up and says she is starving and wants to eat something.

Meantime in the Decepticon Base, Megatron is quite unhappy about the Coneheads' failure. He orders them to bring Astoria to him and this time without any failures.

After sating her hunger with amusement park [[hot dog (food)|hot dog]]s, Astoria is quick to amuse herself by jumping on the merry-go-around, much to Powerglide's consternation and bemusement. Powerglide tries to get the flighty girl to leave, but it's too late—the Coneheads come back for Astoria. Powerglide fights them off with some trick shots, and manages to escape with Astoria. But the Coneheads soon catch up, and Powerglide is rammed by Ramjet. Powerglide's left arm and left wing are injured and he is forced to make a crash landing. The Coneheads bury him in a rock pile, and take Astoria prisoner.

Powerglide breaks out from beneath the debris and attempts to set off in pursuit of the Coneheads. Despite his determination, he collapses due to his injuries. [[Ratchet (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Ratchet]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Wheeljack]] eventually arrive to haul him back to Headquarters for repairs.

After Ratchet does some basic repairs on him, Powerglide refuses any further repairs and goes to see Optimus Prime. While Powerglide is discussing his options with Optimus Prime, [[Teletraan I]] notifies them that [[Sky Spy]] just detected an unusual atmospheric disturbance over the Northern Atlantic and the source is 10 miles above the sea level. Optimus Prime thinks it is possibly the [[Sky Platform|Decepticons' suborbital station]]. Impulsively, Powerglide rushes out of the Ark and flies directly to the Sky Platform and consequently into the energy storm.

Meanwhile, the Decepticons are interrogating Astoria about the energy formula left by her father. She claims that she knows nothing, so Megatron decides to use the [[psycho-probe]] in order to make her tell him about the formula. Seemingly cursed by Astoria's machine-jinxing aura, the psycho-probe keeps malfunctioning, provoking Megatron into such a rage that he eventually destroys the machine.

Hook reports that Powerglide is approaching the platform; the Decepticons go out to meet him. Megatron laughs at Powerglide and says he won't be able to break through the energy storm. But Astoria throws her necklace given by her father toward the energy-storm-generating tower and successfully destroys it. Not surprisingly, the necklace contains the energy formula.

The destroyed tower collapses the buildings on Sky Platform. The Sky Platform loses its control and starts to fall down. The Decepticons retreat to [[Decepticon Headquarters (G1 Earth)|their headquarters]]. Both Powerglide and Astoria go into the control room. After a bit of a lover's tiff, Powerglide repairs the control panel, successfully slowing down the Sky Platform's descent and setting a new course. As the platform drops toward the ocean, the duo make good their escape.

The Decepticons return to base and congratulate themselves on their escape... only to find that the Sky Platform is falling directly onto their headquarters. Megatron orders the force fields to be activated, only for Soundwave to inform him they didn't install any. Megatron then yells at his crew as massive quantities of seawater rush into the base.

Back safe in the city, Powerglide asks Astoria why Megatron was so keen on kidnapping Astoria. She tells him it was because of the energy formula hidden in her necklace. Much to the private glee of the Autobots present, Powerglide asks rather shyly whether he could look her up next time he comes to town. Astoria is very happy and [[kiss]]es him before she scurries off to her limo and is carted off. The minute Astoria is out of earshot, everyone has a good-natured laugh at Powerglide's expense. Thoroughly embarrassed, Powerglide threatens the would-be teasers with a good boxing around the circuits before he stomps into the building.

Once Powerglide is out of sight of the other Autobots, he pauses to open his chest plate, showing a series of LEDs flashing in the form of a stylized heart.

**Powerglide also has some means of tossing out a rope while in plane mode, and reeling it back in.
**Dirge has his own version of Starscream's infamous boob bombs; he fires a pair of missiles from ducts just below his "boobs" (the rectangular "intakes" on his chest.)
**Powerglide can deploy a human-sized parachute from his hand. Apparently it was not designed to be strapped onto the back, but rather the user is supposed to hang on to a baton sized handle for the entire descent. Powerglide clearly overestimates the gripping power of humans.

**Astoria's necklace is the same yellow as her dress after Ramjet hits Powerglide.
**"Don't be so hostile, okay?" Rumble's fists are gray instead of purple in this shot.
**"Subject's mind... completely empty!" Soundwave is missing his yellow stripes, and his cheek guards and eject button are blue instead of gray.
**"Computer error." Soundwave's shoulder cannon is missing its red stripe.
**"He'll never make it through that energy storm" - Megatron is missing the red on his waist.

*Superhuman Astoria:
**With no seat restraints, Astoria should have been battered to pulp by all of Powerglide's maneuvering.
**Both Powerglide and the Coneheads repeatedly manhandle Astoria's arms as through they were made of rubber.
**Powerglide is actually quite abusive to the [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz|human he is charged with "saving" in this episode.]] Right after they meet, he throws her off his arm and onto the concrete so hard she ''bounces'' (thus answering one of the great [[Aerialbots over America!|mysteries of the ages]].)
**Then he apparently ''throws'' her out of the control room on the sky platform. But hey, that's what she gets for having to be told twice, right, Powerglide?
**Astoria literally inhales the hotdog Powerglide gives her at the mini-amusement park. She chews(?) and swallows in under a second, something even Takeru Kobayashi would admire!
**She seemed able to breathe quite comfortably while outside the platform despite the fact it was floating ten miles up.
**It seems Astoria is also gifted with superhuman strength, as she is able to hold her own against the Coneheads, prevent Powerglide from taking her necklace, and rip a metal panel with her bare hands. Maybe Powerglide's abuse isn't as damaging as it appears.
*That is one tough merry-go-round, to be able to support a multi-ton metal robot. (But hey, it's totally worth it to see Powerglide riding a merry-go-round.)
*Astoria rips her dress to bandage Powerglide's arm wound from sand infection, but her dress is intact for the rest of the episode.
**The dress bandage is shown as Powerglide dives for cover from the coneheads, but is missing from every subsequent scene.
*Why didn't Soundwave telepathically scan Astoria's mind like he scanned [[Chip Chase]] back in "[[Roll for It]]"? Surely, Astoria couldn't have jinxed that ability too!
*Astoria correctly deduces that throwing a metal object into the apex of the energy-storm-generating tower will disable it. Yet she then looks around the MECHANICAL ISLAND and notes she finds “nothing” metallic. At the very least, she is surrounded by metal panels, which she easily rips apart in the next scene.
*Speaking of which, said tower seems unbelievably fragile. A large necklace thrown by a human causes a massive explosion. For something so essential to the entire structure, Megatron sure skimped out on making it durable.

Yes, even down to replicating the romance sub-plot, the merry-go-round fight sequence, the brain-sucking torture sequence, and the climax where the villains' base gets ''hilariously'' damaged. [[Carly]] and [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Spike]] are on a drive through the countryside inside [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] when they are overtaken by two speeding vehicles. They pursue and see one of the cars make an improbable crash off a cliff and land on top of the other. Before they can investigate, a man on the top of the cliff yells at them for ruining the shot. It turns out they've driven into the middle of a movie set. Hoist saves the imperiled drivers of the crashed cars, and the [[Attack of the Alien Robots director|director]] is so impressed, he hires Hoist on the spot for his next movie. The director invites Spike and Carly along to visit the movie studio.

In the skies, [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] is having trouble transporting a mysterious, heavy load. He crashes into the swamp set on the lot of [[Major Pictures]]. [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]] orders him to shut down, yells at [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] for no good reason, then sends [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] and [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] to go after Dirge and retrieve the mysterious cargo.

Hoist arrives at Major Pictures for his big-screen debut, but gets the brush-off from the director. Before filming begins, [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]], [[Warpath (G1)|Warpath]], [[Sunstreaker (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Sunstreaker]] and [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] hone in on the set and ham it up for the director's attention. Strangely, the director is impressed by their hi-jinks and decides to hire them all for the action picture.

Movie work doesn't prove to be as glamorous as they had hoped. The bots wind up crashing into buildings and playing second fiddle to the human actors, [[Karen Fishook]] and [[Harold Edsel]], while Hoist pulls them out of the smoldering wreckage after each take.

Disgruntled at their bit parts, the Autobots ask Hoist to lobby the director for better roles, but the director tells Hoist to get a bagel and sit tight. The Autobots take off just as Astrotrain and the other [[Conehead]]s show up to pull Dirge and the cargo out of the swamp set, all as the cameras roll.

Back at Decepticon headquarters, Megatron looks over the [[Wheeljack's unnamed invention|strange device]]. He isn't sure what it does; he only knows that Wheeljack built it, but he's sure that it is some kind of potent, deadly weapon. (He doesn't know [[Wheeljack (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Wheeljack]] very well, does he?) When switched on by Thrust, the device sparks and smokes, but does nothing else. Enraged, Megatron bashes Starscream. Astrotrain then reveals that he and the others were filmed by the humans when they retrieved the device. Megatron orders everyone to the studio to steal or destroy the footage so the device remains a secret.

At the studio, the director is viewing the robot footage and decides to revamp the script into a science fiction epic blockbuster called ''[[Attack of the Alien Robots]]'', to the dismay of the human cast. He calls the Autobots to return with the promise of better parts. Once back, the director has the Autobots don googly-eyed, buck-toothed alien masks and stomp around after the female lead. For some reason, the Autobots still don't like their parts as monsters from space.

Making their rounds, Spike and Carly find the room where the film negatives are stored and discover that someone has stolen scenes from the movie. That someone was Starscream, but [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]] reports to Megatron that the original negative still exists. Megatron pounds on Starscream again, this time ripping wires out of his chest! He then orders the others to get the negative.

Meanwhile, the Autobots are filming another scene with pyrotechnics, which have been switched for actual explosives by [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]]. Spike and Carly are in a screening room watching a new print of the stolen footage of the Decepticons and the device. Midway through the screening, [[:File:HoistGoesHollywood Soundwave movie rip.JPG|Soundwave rips through the screen]] and destroys the projector. Spike and Carly rush to the film vault to get the original before the Decepticons do, but are interrupted by Megatron. Carly fools him by giving him an empty film canister, and they race around the studio lot with the Decepticons close on their heels. They finally meet up with Hoist, who has a plan.

Megatron and the others finally catch up and find the Autobots on a movie set. Hoist threatens to drop the humans and the film into a vat of flesh-eating lava if the ‘Cons don’t withdraw. Megatron says he won’t do it, but Hoist drops them in. Content that the film is gone, the Decepticons retreat. Hoist then lifts Spike and Carly from the “lava”, which is just bubbly, muddy water mixed with special effects.

The Autobots show the film to Wheeljack in the screening room. The Autobot scientist laughs at Megatron because the device Megatron wanted so much is actually worthless. Impressed with Hoist's performance at the lava pit, the director offers him the leading part in a new film, but Hoist declines, saying that his duty as an Autobot comes first, no matter how unglamorous it is.

*Nor is it clear why Dirge struggles to carry the device, while Ramjet seems to have no trouble with it.
*For that matter, why was Dirge the right choice to literally shuttle the device through space to Earth from Cybertron, when the Decepticons have the [[space bridge]] or Astrotrain, whose function is - again, literally - "Decepticon Military Transport"?
*In the time it takes for Astrotrain, Ramjet, and Thrust to arrive at the studio to fish out Dirge and retrieve Wheeljack's gadget, a lot of events took place. Hoist arrives at the studio, four other Autobots arrive, four extra scenes are written and filmed, the director finds Dirge in the swamp set, and a bridge is built around the Conehead, at which point the director calls wrap for the day. Even if the three Decepticons sent to recover the device flew from coast to coast, they could have arrived at the studio in about three hours. Either it was a short work day at the studio, or Astrotrain, Ramjet, and Thrust ran into some problems.
