This is the page for the TFWiki.net Transformers Hall of Fame Auditions entries. The rules are as follows:

#You must pick your top five Transformers characters, from any era. They must actually be Transformers; sorry, but no humans, non-Transformer aliens, non-Transformer robots, or anything else of the sort are being considered for the Hall of Fame. Any votes for such entities will not be tabulated. It is the sole discretion of the contest organizers to decide what does and does not count.
#Take your top five list and put it in alphabetical order. Order of preference does not matter. Feel free to denote the character's franchise of origin, although these distinctions may not figure into the final results.
#You cannot pick a specific version of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron or Starscream. They're already being inducted!
#Only one entry per user.

Please put your characters of choice and user name below in the following manner:

** Japanese ID number: 17, TFC-10
**Accessories: Rocket launcher, 3 rockets, "Concussion Blaster" gun

: Soundwave transforms into a realistically sized microcassette recorder of indeterminate manufacture and includes weapons that turn into imitation batteries to power his nonexistent circuitry. Takara's release of Soundwave in the Transformers line was nearly identical to the Microchange "MC-10 Cassette Man" toy on which he was based. This meant that along with being packaged with Rumble (previously a red "MC-01 Micross"), he came with a set of non-functioning headphones that allowed you not to listen to the silence not recorded on his non-functioning tapes with the non-functioning microphone. Hasbro packaged Soundwave with Buzzsaw rather than Rumble and omitted the other non-functioning accessories.

: Soundwave was included in the VS-Y versus pack along with Rumble and Grimlock.

: In 2003, Soundwave was reissued as part of Takara's Transformers Collection "book-box" series. This iteration of Soundwave was packaged with Laserbeak.

: Another reissue of Soundwave and Laserbeak was seen in 2007 with Takara's Transformers Encore series. This release featured significantly lighter blue and tweaked stickers to match this new shade.
**Accessories: Rocket launcher, 3 rockets, "Concussion Blaster" gun

: As part of the Japanese Headmasters series, Soundwave was redecoed and retooled so that he could hold two cassettes in his chest at once. Soundblaster's tape door was cast in transparent red plastic to allow the information on the "readout" decal to be seen, functioning in the same manner as the Tech Specs decoders. This was unique to the Headmasters decos of the cassettes. The readouts of the Decepticon cassettes showed the "weak points" of Fortress Maximus. Soundblaster came packaged with Buzzsaw.

: Soundblaster saw reissue in the Transformers Collection series in 2005, packaged together with Buzzsaw and Ravage.

: Part of the very first wave of Action Masters, Soundwave is a non-transforming action figure which combines elements of his cartoon model and original toy. He is compatible with any other Action Master weapon or vehicle. He came packaged with his new partner, Wingthing.

: A redeco of the Go-Bot Gearhead, Soundwave transforms into a Ford Thunderbird stock car with precision wheels and wire axles, compatible with "Hot Wheels" and "Matchbox" playsets and tracks (which he was properly sized to fit). Notably, his color scheme is very loud, being bright shades of fluorescent yellow, pink and blue. This is one time fans can actually get away with describing a toy's color scheme as neon.

: In Japan, Soundwave was one of three Go-Bots releases, on a normal Hasbro card with stickers over key parts to add Japanese text to the mix. While this version uses the same bright yellow outer car shell, his internal parts are the same as the second-series all-opaque version of Gearhead. Interestingly enough, his giant "T" hood deco was also applied to the other two toys in the series, Optimus Prime and Megatron.

: This mold was also used to make Robots in Disguise W.A.R.S. and the Universe incarnation of Camshaft. It was planned to be used to make Generation 2 Greasepit, but that toy was canceled.
*Soundwave (Laser Cycle, 1995)

: A redeco of the Laser Cycle Road Pig was planned as Soundwave, but ultimately never released, one of many planned late-1995 Generation 2 redecos that never made it to release. Interestingly, many of these — including Soundwave and fellow Laser Cycle redeco Jazz — were solicited in various store catalogues, such as the Sears Wish Book. Some packaged samples of this toy do exist, but there are estimated to be less than a dozen in existence. Soundwave would have transformed to a blue and silver Honda Goldwing motorcycle, with an LED-lit tailpipe that becomes an arm-mounted weapon in robot mode.

: This mold was later retooled to make Robots in Disguise Axer and Robot Masters Sideways.

:Originally a KB Toys exclusive, Machine Wars Soundwave is a redeco of the Predator Stalker, minus Stalker's handgun and its missiles and with the sighting gimmick having been removed from the missile. In this incarnation, Soundwave transforms into a tracked ICBM (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile) carrier of probably made-up model. His ICBM can mount on either shoulder or his back in robot mode, and features a see-through "scope" gimmick that is considerably neutered from Stalker's original version. The top panel slides open to allow the small Predator jets to attach to it via their Megavisor gimmicks.

: Like all of the Smallest Transforming Transformers, this version of Soundwave is a tiny replica of his Generation 1 form. He came with Smallest Transforming Transformers Ravage, who is probably the smallest Transformer ever.
**Accessories: Giant missile, radar

: The Machine Wars version of Soundwave was redecoed for release in the Universe line in an Ultra-level two-pack with Space Case. It retains basically all the same neutered gimmicks from the previous release of the mold.

: Due to the lack of fiction for either toy in the set, it is possible that this incarnation is in fact an alternate-universe version of Soundwave, or possibly even a new character altogether.
**Accessories: Rocket launcher, "Concussion Blaster" gun

: A new representation of his Generation 1 form, Titanium Series Soundwave transforms into a slightly redesigned version of his original microcassette player mode. Included is a VERY tiny Laserbeak that transforms into a black rectangle, vaguely resembling a microcassette, and is almost (but not quite) as small as Smallest TF Ravage. He can also fit inside of Soundwave's chest. Both of Soundwave's guns resemble batteries and fit into the battery compartment on his back. Some fans have complained that oddly-shaped crotch area makes it look like Soundwave is wearing a diaper, and that poor leg engineering makes it impossible for them to stay extended, and as a result unable to stand up (much like a baby.)
**Accessories: Rocket launcher, "Concussion Blaster" gun

: A planned redeco of the transforming Titanium Soundwave in Soundblaster colors, this toy would have come with a new Titanium version of Ravage instead of Laserbeak. However, this toy was ultimately canceled along with many other solicited 6" Cybertron Heroes. According to the packaging for Titanium Prowl, he would have been "also available" as of November 2008, as Hasbro was unwilling to spend the resources on altering the packaging for these already complete toy packages.
**Accessories: Rocket launcher, 3 rockets, "Concussion Blaster" gun

: Despite having packaging that claims Classics Soundwave is "identical to the original toy," this version is actually a redeco of the Transformers Collection Soundblaster reissue in Soundwave's original colors. This is presumably due to reported mold degradation on the cassette door of the Soundwave mold. While later releases such as the Transformers Encore edition would feature a single-cassette bay, it is noteworthy that this release featured the much more rarely used Cassetteman version of the door mold. Like the Soundblaster reissue, Classics Soundwave is packaged with "Battle" Ravage, as well as Laserbeak, recolored from Soundblaster's Buzzsaw. In a move rare for a US release of this toy, the set included two Takara clear-plastic cassette cases.

: Exclusive to Toys 'R' Us stores, Soundwave had been intended for the Commemorative Series, but after the cancellation of that line, he was added to Classics, although the phrase "Commemorative Edition" is prominently displayed on the front and sides of the box.
*Soundwave (2009)

: In 2009, Hasbro released yet another reissue of Soundwave as part of the Universe line, this time as a Hasbro Toy Shop exclusive that was prominently offered at San Diego Comic-Con 2009. This version of Soundwave features no less than four tapes: Ravage, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw and Ratbat. This edition actually uses the original cassette deck door, leaving only enough room for one cassette but making it more accurate to the G1 toy and cartoon.
: An LED behind the "cassette" door turns on and flashes to indicate the power's on. The single AAA battery lasts for about 6 hours of continuous play. Soundwave was initially released in two color schemes: "Spark Blue", his normal blue and silver colors; and "Sonic White", a mostly white color scheme with some blue detailing, echoing the traditional iPod color scheme. While the "Spark Blue" version reappeared in a second production run, the "Sonic White" version was replaced with "Blaster Black". In this deco, the figure bears a deliberate resemblance to Soundblaster. However, the packaging and other materials still refer to it as "Soundwave".

:Manufactured by Arrow, the Soundwave Design Center was a box in the general shape and likeness of Soundwave which contained various arts and crafts projects for young tykes to entertain themselves with. His head pulled out to reveal a ruler, one arm contains a hilariously dinky and useless pair of "scissors", his lower legs contained rubbing-transfer panels, and the entire back worked as a sort of pantograph machine - attaching a nib to one end of the large mechanical armature ostensibly allowed you to 'remote draw' designs on the included plates.
Trivia
* According to an interview in the magazine Otaku USA (issue 3, pg. 102-3), the original Microchange toy and the accompanying cassettes were at least partially designed by famed mecha designer and anime director Shinji Aramaki. He did not come up with the transformation scheme, but designed most of the outward appearance and details. He also worked on the toys that became the deluxe Insecticons, Reflector, and Perceptor.

* Including the Microchange "Cassette Man" version, the original Soundwave mold has sported at least four different tape doors:
** The original MC-10 version had a cassette door that had "Cassette Man" emblazoned on it and featured a hinge that was internal to the robot's body.
** For the initial Transformers release by Hasbro, the "Cassette Man" text was removed.
** When Takara released the Transformers version of Soundwave in Japan, they retooled the hinge so the bottom of the door attached to the outside of the robot, on either side of the "buttons", which had also been retooled. Both versions of Soundwave were available in Japan, making the retool a running change variant.
** The Soundblaster version had a door that retained the external hinge and added the capacity for holding a second cassette.

* The Decepticon faction insignia appears to be roughly based on Soundwave's head, or vice versa.

* Though Soundwave's toy is a microcassette recorder, his fictional appearances depict him as a stereo cassette deck or Walkman. (Likewise, his microcassette tapes are depicted as regular audio cassettes.)

* "Years ago", Don Figueroa created a concept drawing for a potential SUV-esque Soundwave toy — either for Alternators or Classics, he no longer remembers — which went unused. Despite the fandom's immediate assumptions, Transformers Animated character designer Derrick Wyatt has said that this particular design did not in fact influence the Animated version of Soundwave, meaning any resemblance between the two is coincidental.

* During one of Hasbro's designer panels at 2008, an audience member questioned the feasibility of releasing the Music Label Soundwave toy in the 2008 Universe toyline, but without the expensive MP3 player electronics. Bizarrely, Hasbro design director Aaron Archer gave a seemingly prepared statement that did not answer the question at all, and instead stated that Hasbro were unlikely to release Music Label Soundwave in their markets due to the obscurity of the MiniSD memory card format. (For what it's worth, Hasbro's Greg Lombardo had given an actual answer to the same question at 2007, when he stated that ML Soundwave's innards are so devoted to electronics that removing them might adversely impact the leftover toy's appearance and stability.)
Gigantion is not the kind of place the Oracle would appreciate, but it's a nice, cozy home for a robot. The planet is a huge machine world, a vast analogue of Cybertron, but constructed mostly by its inhabitants. These Cybertronians, whose descendants have grown to tremendous size, settled on an Earth-like, rocky, organic-covered planet, and built their cities on it. As their skills increased, they continually rebuilt these settlements right on top the old ones, until the planet was completely enveloped in a vast series of constructed layers, complete with artificial foliage, simulated skies and day/night cycles - but at its heart, the original planet remains, well-preserved and even supplied with artificial light, but forgotten.

The titanic Transformers of Gigantion, large and powerful, are fortunately not much given to violence and warfare. Most are gentle and peaceful, desiring only to hone their skills and build ever grander structures. They work closely with the small Mini-Con Transformers, who can tackle the delicate tasks too refined for the heavy manipulators of their bulk comrades.

The dominant language of Gigantion is practically identical to a Scottish dialect of the English tongue. The Mini-Cons beep with a Scottish accent, no doubt. At the time the planet was re-discovered, it was led by the gigantic Metroplex.

According to Gigantian tradition, old cities are to be left alone. The population constantly moves to unbuilt areas, constructing new cities, never returning to the old ones. They even go so far as to dump the data on those old cities from their computers. Why this custom came about is lost to time, but it's tradition, and if you stopped doing traditional things just because they make no sense, then really, what's wrong with you?

The planet is surrounded not just by a ring, but by a debris field made up of the detritus of ancient building projects...and probably bits of a long-gone planet.

Gigantion was plotted out as one of the four worlds to serve as a focal point for the galaxy-spanning Space Bridge project. The starship Lemuria was sent to the planet, along with a Cyber Planet Key, but like the other colony worlds, a space bridge accident caused the world to be cut off from all others, and over the years, it was lost to time.

Unlike the other worlds, Gigantion got even more lost, as at some point in the planet's ancient history, after the original colonists arrived, the entire system was sucked into a wormhole, transporting it to an alternate universe. Balance This impromptu interdimensional shift was brought about by the warlike inhabitants of the nefarious Planet X, who had pulled Gigantion into their universe so that they could consume the world for its rich energy supplies and raw materials. The Gigantians turned to the power of the Cyber Planet Key, which caused both the planet and its inhabitants (save the Mini-Cons, of course) to grow to massive size, allowing them to fight Planet X to a standstill. When Planet X was detonated by one of its own malfunctioning weapons, peace returned, and the inhabitants of Gigantion went back to their jobs. Tales of the war were eventually lost to the centuries, being little more than rumor and myth to its modern inhabitants. Challenge

Gigantion itself remained trapped in the parallel universe, with the only means of access between it and its home continuum being a tunnel in time and space in the Skeleton Nebula, which was only open for a few days every year...though other methods have since been found. Warp
Trivia
* The original idea for Gigantion involved colossal Junkion-like scrap-robots, according to Aaron Archer at 2006.

* The reason for Gigantion's endless build-cycle is never actually addressed in the show. Again according to Mister Archer, this time from 2005, the reason is that Gigantion was supposed to become the hub of the galaxy-spanning Space Bridge network, so they were building to accommodate the millions of Transformers that would soon populate and pass through the world - however, the idea of them continuing to build for a project that had ended in disaster centuries before makes just as little sense as what was portrayed on the show.

* According to Cybertron dub-writer David McDermott, the Gigantions' Scottish accents were inspired by the "greatest sci-fi engineer" of all time, "Scotty" from Star Trek.
Like many of the Autobots who first appeared in 1985, the exact circumstances behind Skids joining the original group of Earth-based Autobots remain unknown. Skids first appeared as part of a strike force that was sent to stop the Insecticons from ravaging a human farm, only to meet with failure. Apparently injured in the battle, Skids underwent some repairs by Hoist upon return to Autobot Headquarters, where he responded incredulously to Bumblebee's report that he had retrieved robotic insecticide from the planet Floron 3 to deal with the Insecticon threat. Quest for Survival

Later, Skids was part of a team sent to investigate bombs that were raining down on a city from a football stadium (the work of the Triple Changer Blitzwing). Blitzwing, however, had the stadium surrounded by a massive "Zone Defense" maze built by the Constructicons, and while attempting to traverse it, Skids crashed into Prowl and was driven over by tank-mode Blitzwing. Skids and the other Autobots' remains were then gathered by Scrapper, who built a throne for himself out of them. These Autobots were soon rescued and quickly rebuilt, and participated in the crises that ensued as Blitzwing, Astrotrain, Megatron and Devastator vied for Decepticon leadership. Following that skirmish, Prowl opined that Optimus Prime was the greatest leader in the universe, which prompted himself, Skids, Bluestreak and Tracks to form themselves into a throne for Prime; Prime refused to sit, saying that thrones were for Decepticons—he'd rather roll. Triple Takeover
Japanese cartoon continuity
Binaltech
Skids was the first of the Binaltech Autobots created simply with the intent of upgrading an existing, healthy Transformer, rather than in the name of repairing one that had been injured. Outfitted with self-repairing nanomechanical antibodies, Skids's body can, barring heavy damage in battle, theoretically function for thousands of years without maintenance. In both his original and new body, Skids dedicated time to studying the chronal warp on Dinobot Island, which gave rise to the Autobot strategy known as "Operation: Distant Thunder", a last-ditch scheme should the Decepticons tamper with the fabric of space-time. That horror occurred when Ravage used the Kronosphere to alter the timeline, and Skids prepared to initiate the plan and send Wheeljack's memory data back in time to avert the catastrophe.

The data probe was launched, but as the timeline was righting itself a Nemesis Prime arrived, and manipulated the temporal wave to preserve the Binaltech timeline separate from the original continuity. Possessed by the Spark of the Protector, hailing from some future point in time, Nemesis Prime informed Skids and the others that their timeline was destined to produce great warriors capable of safeguarding the entire multiverse, and therefore must continue on its new course.
noteukonly

In the event that the Ark's mission would require more manpower, Optimus Prime had several Autobots encode copies of their personalities as light patterns within crystals, including Skids. When a large number of Prime's troops were then injured during the opening volleys of the war on Earth, Prime arranged for the construction of new bodies, which the personalities were then programmed into, bringing Skids and the others to life "for a second time." Now in a new body that transformed into a blue van, Skids' first mission was to aid in preventing Shockwave from stealing sonic energy from a Brick Springstern concert, and he immediately took a liking to the music of Earth and the possibilities of what could be learned from interacting with mankind. Rock and Roll-Out!

On the way to raid the Decepticon base, Skids accidentally clipped the car of hot-tempered Jake Dalrymple, who pursued the Autobots on their mission and distracted Skids just enough for Ravage to blast him off a cliff. Although Optimus Prime mourned the loss of Skids, the Autobot leader nor any other Autobot thought to recover the believed deactivated body of Skids later after their mission had been completed. Lying crippled and unable to transform, Skids was shortly discovered by register girl Charlene, who, thinking he was an ordinary van, had him fixed up with the intent of keeping him for herself. Skids was open to the idea at first, preferring to live a peaceful life to that of a warrior, but after another bout of road rage with Dalrymple, the unearthly stunts he performed left him no option but to reveal his true nature of Charlene.

A somewhat unusual relationship ensued between the two, but more trouble soon came Skids's way in the form of Donny Finkleberg, who was being hunted down by Ravage. Fleeing from the Decepticon with Charlene and Donny, Skids hid out at an abandoned mining town, but yet again, the raging Dalrymple tracked him down and shattered his windshield, knocking him unconscious and into a dream where he died through his refusal to attack Megatron and save Charlene. Reawakening, he engaged Ravage in battle again, finally finding the strength to act, and causing his foe to tumble down a mineshaft. Skids then parted ways with Charlene, having come to the realisation that their two roles in life were too different for their relationship to work out. Showdown!

Skids returned to the Ark with Finkleberg, and later embarked on a mission with him to track down a group of missing Autobots who had been captured by the Rapid Anti-robot Assault Team. Unfortunately, money still governed Finkleberg's actions, and he promptly sold out Skids to RAAT's leader Walter Barnett when Skids was deactivated for the night. Heavy Traffic! Skids was disassembled for study, but when the Decepticons Runabout and Runamuck appeared on Earth and began defacing landmarks, RAAT operative Circuit Breaker was forced to enter into a deal with the Autobots to stop them. Skids and the other Autobots' components were combined to form a jury-rigged robot that Circuit Breaker used to stop the Battlechargers, but in return for their co-operation, Skids and the Autobots were allowed to go free. Decepticon Graffiti!

On the return trip to the Ark, however, Skids was abruptly torn from reality when the future Decepticon Galvatron traveled back in time from 2006, shunting Skids into limbo to maintain temporal balance. Fallen Angel (comic) Skids remained in limbo for two years while Galvatron ran amok on Earth, his mind steadily succumbing to the dream-illusions created by the monstrous creatures native to the realm.

{{note|Skids was removed from the active Autobots in the UK stories, but not the US ones.

With Galvatron's eventual destruction during the Time Wars, Skids was finally returned to Earth, but he had spent too long in Limbo—the limbo-creatures had succeeded in shaping a reality from his dreams, and the nightmarish monsters that he had imagined materialised on Earth with him. Fleeing from the beasts, who desired to merge with Skids so that they might become more powerful, Skids lured them into a nuclear power plant which he had planned to detonate, wiping out the monsters and himself, but the remnants of the Autobot Wreckers—joined by Catilla and Carnivac of the Decepticon Mayhem Attack Squad—arrived to aid him, defeating the monsters. Skids joined with this group of Transformers, forming the Survivors. Survivors!

Grimlock traveled to Hydrus Four to use Nucleon to revive the Dinobots. Returning to the Ark, he also pumped Nucleon into the med bays, reviving Skids and several others, and headed towards Cybertron. Grimlock used the Ark as a blunt instrument across Unicron's head, forcing Skids and the others to evacuate and join the battle against the Chaos Bringer. On the Edge of Extinction!
When Carnivac ran off on his own to avenge Catilla's death, Skids and the other Survivors insisted Springer contact Grimlock and the Earthforce for back-up. Hooked up with these Autobot reinforcements, they stormed the Mayhem Attack Squad's tropical island base to save their friend. Skids personally confronted Octopunch in single combat, holding his own against the murderous Pretender. Where Wolf?

On a later mission for Earthforce, Skids and the Survivors protected an oil tanker from Starscream, while the rest of the Decepticons were trying to distract the Autobots with an all-out assault on their base. Undeterred by the sleight-of-hand, the Survivors caught up with Starscream in the Gulf of Mexico. Skids used a flying leap by Carnivac as a distraction to catch Starscream with his liquid nitrogen cannon, and then Inferno knocked the Decepticon commander into the drink. Divide and Conquer!
Skids was among the senior scientists (including Perceptor, Quickmix, and Rad) who questioned Rodimus Prime's plan to send out the best of the remaining Autobot science and research members to establish deep-space reconnaissance posts. Betrayal

Dreamwave comics continuity
8.2 million years ago, Skids was in the Chamber of Ancients, observing the ceremony in which Optronix was given the Matrix of Leadership and transformed into Optimus Prime. Immediately, three Decepticon assassins attacked, and though Skids acted to protect the new Prime, his arm was cut off by Umbra.

Skids was repaired and he returned to his post at the Decagon. While Prime was absent, Skids picked up radar of incoming Decepticon invaders and a transmission from the force's field commander, Shockwave. Skids manned auto-defenses from inside the Decagon until they and their Omega Sentinel units were destroyed. Picking up their personal weaponry, Skids and the other Autobots were all that was left to defend Iacon, but defend it they did and Shockwave's forces were driven back. The War Within

During the Dark Ages, Skids served with Prowl's faction of Autobots. The team got involved in a skirmish with Trypticon and the giant Decepticon jumped onto a building in which Skids was trying to hide, crushing him. He survived though. The War Within: The Dark Ages

Skids was not among the Autobots who traveled to Earth aboard the Ark, remaining behind on Cybertron as the planet slipped into the deactivated state known as the Great Shutdown. When Shockwave began reactivating the planet and successfully unified the Autobot and Decepticon factions, Skids was a member of the council of Autobots who served to represent their faction in the alliance. Few of the council members were actually suited for leadership, however, and slowly found themselves giving more and more control to Shockwave. Eventually, the example shown by the Arks returning crew and several homegrown Autobot insurgency cells tore the blinders from the council's optics, and Skids gathered his fellow councilmen in taking to the streets and ousting the Decepticons from power. Revelation (War and Peace) Several council members would then accompany Prowl and the former Autobots of Earth back to that planet to construct Autobot City, and Skids may have been among them. Due to Dreamwave's self-destruction, we will never know.
His robot mode is similar to other hood-chest Autobot Transformers, but is unusual in that his rear wheels fold into his feet, aiding in stability. Also unusual for Transformers figures, his hand weapons actually attach onto his forearms rather than being held in his fists. He is also armed with a spring-loaded rocket launcher.

: In 2004, both Takara and Hasbro reissued Skids as part of the Transformers Collection and Commemorative Series, respectively. The Takara version features a fully functional spring-loaded rocket launcher, whereas the Hasbro version has the launching spring removed.
Trivia
* The Diaclone version of Skids was additionally available in black or red. Neither of these color schemes have been used within the Transformers toyline as yet, but with Takara, you never know.

* Skids' animation model head appears to be based on early Diaclone promotional concept art. The toy's head would be different... and ultimately different from the Crosscut head shown in his instructions, which also popped up a few times in the UK comics.

* Though Skids' toy turned into a Honda City Turbo, his car mode was often misinterpreted in Transformers fiction as one of the then-new minivans, despite the fact that a Honda City Turbo is a subcompact car, and as such, could theoretically be stowed in the back seat of an actual minivan. This is likely because most Americans in 1985 wouldn't know what a subcompact car is.

* Skids is noteworthy for his almost complete absence from the original television series. He had but two lines in two different episodes by two different voice actors.

* In the television commercial that introduced all the rest of his assortment, Skids was totally absent. Burnsauce!

* His bad luck doesn't stop there. Though Skids had an issue all to himself in the Marvel Comics, he spent upwards of 100 (UK) issues abandoned and forgotten in limbo while parasites ate his brain.

* In the "Survivors!" story, Skids was suddenly drawn with Crosscut's head. "Survivors!"' artist, Dan Reed, previously drew him with his real head, so it'd be interesting to learn why and how this change happened. (He would later mysteriously regain his own face.)

* In more recent years, toys sporting the name "Skids" have required an additional "Autobot" prefix for trademark reasons, hence making the official name "Autobot Skids".
The Autobots travel to England to track down the source of a coded Cybertronian signal... but the Decepticons aren't far behind.

Synopsis
The Decepticon jets attack the English castle at Stansham and plant an underground probe before leaving. Not far away, Sammy Harker, the son of the castle's curator, is playing in the woods when he comes face-to-face with Jazz. Terrified, he runs home, only to be followed by Jazz in his car mode.

Arriving home in shock, Sammy tells his tale, which makes his father think of the old legend of the Man of Iron. In the 11th Century, the Man of Iron, a giant metal man, was seen in the vicinity of Stansham castle on three occasions. He did battle with an attacking force using a "javelin of flame" before disappearing again. Sammy's father then shows him a 900-year-old picture showing the Man of Iron, which Sammy thinks looks like the robot he saw.

That night, Sammy is troubled by strange dreams of robots and jet fighters. Unknown to him, his dreams echo reality as Mirage visits his house and steals the picture of the Man of Iron.

The following day, Sammy is intrigued to see a white Porsche parked outside his house. The Man of Iron picture is on the back seat. The door opens and Sammy gets inside, but as Sammy's mother comes out the door closes and Jazz drives off with Sammy.

Jazz manages to calm Sammy and convince him that he will come to no harm. He is taking him to Optimus Prime. Along the way, Mirage, Trailbreaker, and Bluestreak join them. Then they are attacked by Thundercracker, who badly injures Trailbreaker, before being shot down himself by Bluestreak.

They eventually reach the shuttle ship where Prime is waiting. He explains to Sammy that they have been tracking a signal from an ancient Autobot ship. He believes that the Autobots on Cybertron sent a rescue ship for them after they crashed on Earth only for the ship to crash itself. The Man of Iron is an Autobot who occasionally reactivates in an attempt to complete its mission. The Decepticons want to destroy the ship and its occupants and the Autobots are trying to stop them.

The army investigates the Decepticon attack on the castle and digs at the point where their probe landed. Suddenly the ground shakes and the Man of Iron appears from a hidden door in the ground. Then the Decepticons attack and the Man of Iron is destroyed.

Jazz and the Autobots arrive and drive the Decepticons away, returning Sammy to his family as well. Prime decides that given the Decepticon menace, they can't possibly consider returning to Cybertron and abandoning the Earth. He is equally unwilling to leave the rescue ship intact and orders Jazz to destroy it.

Deep within the ship, Navigator lays unconscious waiting for the time when his attendant, the Man of Iron, will awaken him to complete his mission. That time will never arrive as above Jazz—not knowing Navigator is in there—fires a missile that completely vaporises the ship and its occupant.

Sammy would never again see Jazz—but the Man of Iron would haunt his dreams...
Errors
* The cover to the US reprint in issue #33 featured a mis-colored Megatron (complete with Decepticon faction symbol) being attacked by medieval knights. Megatron does not feature in the story and the 'Man of Iron' only bears a passing resemblance to him.

Items of note
*This is the first UK-originated story. "Man of Iron", "The Enemy Within!" and "Raiders of the Last Ark" were used to fill the gap while waiting for new US material after the initial four-issue miniseries. This leaves the story's place in continuity open to question: The miniseries ends with all the Autobots and Decepticons deactivated, and it takes eight more US issues for all the characters in "Man of Iron" to return to action. (Even more confusingly, the story would be reprinted in the US run as #33 and #34, long after many of the characters had been again deactivated.) Keeping as close as possible to the original printing's place in the series, these events could be worked somewhere into the latter half of the miniseries, during/between "Prisoner of War!" and "The Last Stand".
*The story's sensibility is markedly different from most Transformers fiction, no doubt due to it being written while the brand was still in its infancy. Its battles are shockingly brutal and devoid of banter (in fact, the Decepticons are never heard to speak). A single shot from an average Transformer weapon can reduce an enemy to a ball of flaming wreckage. It's unclear how many of these casualties are actually fatal, but the Man of Iron does seem to be utterly destroyed by a mere two Seeker missiles.
*Prime's order to destroy the rescue craft and its potential crew is uncharacteristically callous and poorly justified. As Jazz does the deed, the narration describes him as wholly ignorant of the craft's inhabitant and his knowledge of Cybertron's location. However, the Autobots' dialogue had established that they were fully aware of the ship's purpose, and Jazz himself had told Sammy that they expected to find multiple Autobots inside. In that same conversation, Prime had said that the Decepticons might wipe out the entire area just to destroy the ship, which may be why the Autobots did it first: Better to cleanly eliminate the target than let the surrounding humans suffer. But the obvious other option of enlisting the ship and its crew in the fight against the Decepticons is at no point ever mentioned. Even if we assume the ship to be inexcavable, the Autobots' lethal failure to check it for crew members first is curiously cold-hearted.
*When Jazz remotely reports to Optimus Prime, he calls himself 'Autobot codename Jazz'. Later, he tells Sammy to call him Jazz because his real name is unpronounceable.
*The Man of Iron's design seems to be based on a combination of Jazz and Megatron's body designs.
*This story was originally published in a mix of black & white and colour, and was subsequently fully colourised for the Collected Comics printing. An alternative colourisation was used for the US printing.
*The staggered colouring history makes the Man of Iron's killer difficult to identify. While the original art is black-and-white, the issue's cover is in colour, and it shows the Seeker in question to be Skywarp. This is supported by the in-story dialogue ('There's another one! It just seemed to appear from nowhere!'), suggesting use of his teleporting ability. When the story was reprinted in Collected Comics, however, the killer was coloured as Thundercracker, which resulted in a quiz question in a later UK annual that named him as the do'er of the deed (although the previous issue's cover showed that Thundercracker was the jet shot down by Bluestreak in the third instalment). And as if things weren't confused enough already, when the US reprint of the story was recoloured, the killer was depicted as Starscream!
*At the end of part two, when Sammy is 'kidnapped' by Jazz in his car mode, this is followed by a public-service warning against accepting lifts from strangers. This message is completely undone by the events of parts three and four, when Sammy meets the other Autobots and has an adventure with them.
*When reprinted in Collected Comics #3, each issue/chapter was given its own subtitle. These were:
**"First Encounter"
**"Kidnapped!"
**"You've Got Friends?"
* The box at the top left of issue #33 also features a Union Flag behind the image of Grimlock.
* The cover to the US reprint in issue #33 contains the following melodramatic statement: You won't believe it! Your eyes will bug out!! An explosive saga from the house of ideas!!!
Transformers Animated: The Arrival is a 6-issue mini-series published by IDW Publishing, debuting in August 2008, and set in the Transformers Animated continuity. Each story seems to be mostly self-contained and (broadly) non-conflicting with the cartoon. In this regard it is of some significance as the first comic to be explicitly set in the same continuity as a concurrently ongoing animated series.
Overview
ongoing
The Arrival occurs concurrently with the Animated cartoon, taking place in-between—and in some cases, during—various episodes of the series, often fleshing out off-screen events and explaining how certain events that were merely alluded to onscreen went down in detail. After the opening issue, which retells the pilot movie from different perspectives, the bulk of the series (issues #2–5) is set during the early portion of the show's first season, taking place between "Total Meltdown" and "The Thrill of the Hunt" (and in one instance, during the latter), with two stories taking the form of flashbacks detailing events in the characters' pasts.

Optimus Prime's Space Bridge repair crew encounters Megatron, and all are lost in the Space Bridge. Both the Autobots and Decepticons deliver eulogies for their lost comrades. On Earth, Isaac Sumdac discovers Megatron's head, and over time, progresses from simple attempts at reverse-engineering to the establishment of Sumdac Systems. The Autobots awaken and meet Sari, establishing themselves as Detroit's new heroes. The Arrival issue 1

Starscream refuses to team up with Blackarachnia, but during their scuffle, crashes into the Earth's Moon. Later, he makes his way to Earth and attacks the Autobots, and during the battle, the AllSpark is briefly opened. The resulting energy burst is detected by both the Autobots and the Decepticons, and the two groups make tracks for Earth. The Arrival issue 1

As Angry Archer attempts to rob a used car lot, he is foiled by a superhero named The Wraith. Bumblebee steals The Wraith's thunder, however, and exposes him as a hack. The Wraith seeks revenge by staging a phony attack by Bumblebee at a football game, causing the Autobots to intervene. The Wraith is caught and sent to an insane asylum. The Arrival issue 2

After his battle with Optimus, Starscream is in temporary stasis lock and has an embarrassing encounter with Professor Princess, who accidentally reactivates him. The Arrival issue 2

Sumdac is robbed by a former kick boxer turned industrial saboteur named Stilleto. The professor reveals that the stolen materials were two new prototypes: a new kind of metal alloy and a high-power laser scalpel. The Autobots catch up to her, and she gives them a good battle, but she's finally captured by Optimus Prime. Megatron, watching the news feed of the capture, considers this test of the material he plans to use for his new swords a successful field run. The Arrival issue 3

In Cybertron's past, Ratchet find dozens of Transformers, both Autobot and Decepticon, killed by a chemical weapon created by the Decepticons that's been nicknamed "Cosmic Rust". When a Decepticon calls for a medic, Ratchet helps, despite his misgivings. The 'Con reveals he can develop an antidote with Ratchet's help, and the medic agrees. As it's created, the two almost become friends before Oil Slick turns on Ratchet, infecting him with the rust. Ratchet is able to steal same of the antidote to not only cure himself but to bring back for mass production. He muses on the little bit of deception he learned from Oil Slick...and whether or not something from the Autobots might rub off on the Decepticons one day. The Arrival issue 3

Porter C. Powell markets a consumer vehicle line called the Bulkhead, a gas-guzzling "mega van" inspired by the Autobot of the same name. Bulkhead objects but legally has no recourse, and the vans cause chaos throughout the city. Bulkhead disguises himself as a Powell-themed vehicle and takes Powell on a dangerous, high-speed joyride, during which a terrified Powell confesses the perilous design flaws of the unit. A hidden camera captures Powell's entire confession, forcing a recall of the defective vehicles. The Arrival issue 4

On New Kaon, Lockdown is hired by Blitzwing to bring in the Autobot presumed responsible for Megatron's death. He tracks the Nemesis to the location of its crash on the Moon and determines that a repair crew led by Optimus Prime was responsible. However, he is suddenly ambushed by Blackarachnia, who was also investigating the crash. The pair come to blows, and they are both eventually knocked unconscious. When Lockdown comes to, Blackarachnia is seemingly gone, so he boards his ship and heads down to Detroit in pursuit of his real target, Optimus Prime, little realising that Blackarachnia, stowing away aboard his ship and hidden from its scanners thanks to her techno-organic make-up, has hitched a free ride to Earth and is now hot in pursuit of the very same Autobot...
