During his training with [[Micronus Prime|Micronus]], Optimus used the sword in a fight against a robot foe while trying to protect some [[human]]s. Despite several of the humans being killed, Micronus would not give Optimus any more information on the weapon, simply reminding him of his original task. Atop a nearby hill, Optimus found an engraving that allowed him to utilize the weapon and unleash an arc of lightning, taking out the robotic foes. ==Synopsis==
The Autobots, having infiltrated the crashed ''[[Alchemor]]'', are surrounded by Decepticons. [[Saberhorn]] and [[Steeljaw (RID)|Steeljaw]] bicker over the latter's leadership coup, and though [[Glowstrike]] is tempted to strike, the fact Steeljaw has two [[Decepticon Hunter]]s stops her. [[Optimus Prime (WFC)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Bumblebee (WFC)|Bumblebee]] disagree on their next course of action, so [[Windblade (RID)|Windblade]] takes matters into her own hands, taking off as a distraction. The other Autobots make a run for it, but [[Drift (RID)|Drift]] and Bumblebee are hit by fire from Steeljaw in the process. Though they escape, it's with the loss of Windblade and Bumblebee's [[Decepticon Hunter]].

As Windblade is carried away, Glowstrike picks up the lost Decepticon Hunter and prepares to take back leadership from Steeljaw, but she and Saberhorn are merely blasted by their betrayer who claims the weapon himself.

Bumblebee and Optimus again clash over the latter trying to take leadership from the former. The team splits up, with Drift and [[Ratchet (WFC)|Ratchet]] going to rescue Windblade; [[Strongarm (RID)|Strongarm]], [[Sideswipe (WFC)|Sideswipe]] and [[Grimlock (WFC)|Grimlock]] trying to free the [[Mini-Con]] captives; and Bumblebee, Optimus and [[Toolbox]] continuing with the [[stasis bomb]] plan.

On shore, [[Fixit (RID)|Fixit]] is determined to help the captive Mini-Cons. While [[Denny Clay|Denny]] and [[Russell Clay|Russell Clay]] are distracted readying disguises, he steals a boat and heads out towards the ''Alchemor''.

[[Overload (RID)|Overload]] is securing Windblade in a stasis pod when Drift and Ratchet burst in on him. A fight ensues and the Autobots are knocked into stasis pods, however Drift's Mini-Cons manage to detach and avoid being trapped as well.

Strongarm, Sideswipe and Grimlock stumble on a communications room, which they realize can be used to transmit a signal to deactivate the [[inhibitor collar]]s enslaving the Mini-Cons. Before they can do so, they're found by [[Groundpounder (RID)|Groundpounder]] and [[Thunderhoof]] who engage them in battle.

Bumblebee's trio is making their way through the ship, though Bumblebee's irritation is boiling over and he and Optimus are forced to talk out their problem, with Bumblebee managing to persuade Optimus to let him lead. They reach the ventilation hub and start planting the cryo bomb but are interrupted by Steeljaw. The Decepticon combines his Decepticon Hunters, granting himself tremendous power.

Fixit sneaks through the ''Alchemor'' until he stumbles on his enslaved fellow Mini-Cons. When one of the slaves collapses and it appears that a Decepticon is about to terminate, Fixit steps in to block his shot.

Jetstorm and Slipstream manage to free Ratchet and Windblade who successfully take out Overload shortly before Drift is freed. They head for the rendezvous.

Meanwhile Strongarm's team is having trouble against Groundpounder and Thunderhoof. Strongarm manages to kick Sideswipe over to the communication controls, and he sets up a signal which incapacitates the two Decepticons. He then sets the console to deactivate the inhibitor collars, allowing Fixit and his newly-freed Mini-Con pals overcome the Decepticon guards.

Bumblebee and Optimus struggle with the supercharged Steeljaw, however a mayday from Toolbox has Fixit's group come to their aid. While the Mini-Cons keep Steeljaw busy, Bumblebee attempts to complete the bomb, and Optimus helps out after Steeljaw overcomes the Mini-Cons. The bomb is soon complete, but they need to find some way to keep Steeljaw on the island so he'll be affected when it goes off. As the three larger bots clash, the Mini-Cons manage to deprive Steeljaw of his weapon, which Bumblebee promptly takes possession of. He uses it to trap Steeljaw in the floor. The Autobots speed back to the boats and manage to get clear before the bomb goes off. Fixit reports the Decepticons on board the ship are now all in stasis.

In the aftermath, Toolbox announces that he and the other Mini-Cons will complete repairs to the ''Alchemor'' and use it to take the Decepticons back to Cybertron. Windblade and Ratchet intend to accompany them, and Optimus intends to go as well, so he can investigate the new ruling body. After watching the boat leave, Bumblebee tells the rest of the team that it's time to establish a permanent base on Earth, and they all head back to the scrapyard.

==Synopsis==
The Autobots speed along a road in search of a [[Decepticon]] fugitive, however when [[Bumblebee (WFC)|Bumblebee]] orders everyone off-road, [[Optimus Prime (WFC)|Optimus Prime]] disagrees and Bumblebee has to assert his authority over the team. The other Autobots discuss the changed dynamics since the away team returned. Learning of the concept of a "team within the team", [[Grimlock (WFC)|Grimlock]] decides to team up with [[Drift (RID)|Drift]], who is entirely unthrilled by the idea. Switching to bot mode, they head into the forest and encounter a panicked [[Clampdown (RID)|Clampdown]], who is closely followed by none other than [[Ratchet (WFC)|Ratchet]] accompanied by the Mini-Con [[Undertone]]. A reunion takes place before they move in on Clampdown.

Back at base, Clampdown is secured in a stasis pod. Ratchet explains that the new government on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] blames Optimus for the widespread destruction on the planet, and that he was essentially exiled by assigning him to a job tracking down Decepticons. He has been brought to Earth in the pursuit of a Decepticon who he captured shortly before running into Clampdown and the Autobots. Optimus invites him to stay to help out, though it's Bumblebee who orders Drift and [[Sideswipe (WFC)|Sideswipe]] to wake Clampdown to try and get intel. [[Strongarm (RID)|Strongarm]] observes that Bumblebee is having trouble with Optimus taking trying to take lead when Bumblebee is supposed to be team leader.

The Autobots attempt to interrogate Clampdown, but the Decepticon faints. Before they can do anything more, [[Fixit (RID)|Fixit]] reports an unidentified Cybertronian at the front gate. The Autobots prepare for a fight, the gate opens to reveal a damaged Fixit-style Mini-Con. After some repairs are made, Fixit introduces everyone to [[Toolbox]], who it turns out is another ''[[Alchemor]]'' guard. He reveals that part of the prison ship crashed off the coast of [[Crown City]], and the freed Decepticon prisoners promptly enslaved the Mini-Con guards with [[inhibitor collar]]s. The Cons, led by [[Scorponok (WFC)|Scorponok]], [[Saberhorn]] and [[Glowstrike]] began to repair the ship for use to plunder the galaxy, though the captured Scoponok, as Toolbox reveals, has now been replaced with [[Steeljaw (RID)|Steeljaw]].

On "Decepticon Island", Steeljaw calls Glowstrike and Saberhorn to him and reveals that he's managed to obtain the [[Decepticon Hunter]]s from the locked cabinet. The pair are pleased, until Steeljaw turns the weapons on them.

The Autobots are meanwhile brainstorming ways to tackle the island full of Decepticons. Getting help from Cybertron is out, and they don't have enough stasis pods for that many Cons, however they have [[cryo-gas]] from Windblade's stash, and Ratchet hits on the idea of using it to make a [[stasis bomb]]. Optimus gives orders and the Autobots split up, though Strongarm again tries to encourage Bumblebee to talk to Optimus about the leadership problem. Ratchet likewise talks to Optimus who feels under the circumstances he should lead, and changes the subject. The team hits on the idea of planting the bomb in the ''Alchemor''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> ventilation hub, though Bumblebee again butts heads with Optimus over the plan. Windblade comes up with a way to get the team onto the island — Grimlock is modified with Decepticon insignias and signals so he can pretend to be bringing a boatload of Autobot prisoners back, and one of Denny's boats is hauled out.

The Autobots head out onto the sea, pretending to be unconscious. Grimlock manages to make contact with the Decepticons, and the ''Alchemor'' decloaks, but when the guards become suspicious, Grimlock has to knock them out. The Autobots head into the ship, and are shocked by the number of Decepticons they find. When they encounter a large chamber in which Mini-Cons are being forced to work, their presence is given away by one of the slaves spotting Toolbox. Though Optimus wants to stay and free the Mini-Cons, Bumblebee is determined to complete the mission, however the delay while they argue means even more Decepticons pour into the room and surround them. Steeljaw arrives with the deposed leadership and welcomes them to the first outpost in his new Decepticon empire.

==Synopsis==
The stealth team drives along a highway towards one of [[Windblade (RID)|Windblade]]'s supply caches, which she's detected has been interfered with. They arrive at a disused naval yard, and as they head in, [[Drift (RID)|Drift]] deploys [[Slipstream (RID)|Slipstream]] and [[Jetstorm (RID)|Jetstorm]]. Though not much appears to be damaged, they move further in, and Drift's Mini-Cons ask their master if they've studied enough to be able to work by themselves. As the Autobots enter a building, they're unaware that they're being watched from afar by the [[Decepticon]] [[Stockade (RID)|Stockade]] who is hoping to gain access to the cache.

As they reach the door to the cache, [[Sideswipe (WFC)|Sideswipe]] thinks the security is down and tries to take point, only to be knocked on his tailpipe by the still-active [[force field]]. Windblade points out that the force field is invisible thanks to lightbenders, and observes that the force field has taken some damage though it hasn't been breached. After opening the cache to make sure everything's in place, they're preparing to close it all up again when a small army of Mini-Cons crashes their party. Though individually the Mini-Cons aren't much, they have the strength of numbers. Optimus orders Drift to try and seal the cache, but the master's students disregard his order to return to him, and when he spots the Mini-Cons setting up a large weapon, he throws the pair out of the way, taking a hit to the leg. Stockade orders his troops to press the advantage, but with some help from Windblade's fans, Drift succeeds in locking himself in the cache. The others attempt to retreat, and after being hit with grenades, Optimus and Windblade are unable to escape the building. Sideswipe, Slipstream and Jetstorm get out, but pursued by Mini-Cons, are forced to take shelter in an empty armory. Optimus and Windblade likewise seal themselves in a bunker.

Stockade makes a public address, demanding the Autobots give him access to the cache in return for their lives. Optimus contacts the others for a situation report. With Drift injured and everyone effectively trapped, Optimus contacts the scrapyard, however Fixit is unable to contact Bumblebee's team. He's able to fill them in on Stockade, however. Optimus has Drift make his own public address, informing Stockade that he has a doomsday device that will destroy [[Earth]] unless Stockade leaves. Stockade doesn't buy it and orders his troops to scan the cache, just in case.

Drift's Mini-Cons reveal to Sideswipe that they ignored their master's order to undeploy, and they blame themselves for Drift's injured state. After Sideswipe points out they technically don't have to stay with Drift, the two Mini-Cons have an idea. Sideswipe's soon surrendering, however this is just a bluff — he, Jetstorm, and Slipstream swiftly take out the team tasked with capturing him. Stockade is still trying to contact the team when his troops report the results of the scan. With Drift's bluff exposed, Stockade and his Mini-Cons open fire on the cache entrance. Meanwhile Sideswipe reaches the bunker and starts helping get Optimus and Windblade out.

Stockade's forces manage to breach the cache, and though Jetstorm and Slipstream attempt to hold them off, several get through. Fortunately Drift has the cache's weaponry at his disposal and joins in the fighting, even in his injured state. Optimus and Windblade are finally free of the bunker, and with Sideswipe, they reinforce Drift and his Mini-Cons. Optimus and Stockade face off while the others deal with the Mini-Con army, and soon the Decepticons lie in disarray. Sideswipe manages to take out Stockade by firing Drift's Mini-Cons at him. Drift admits that his Mini-Cons performed admirably and their education is complete, however the pair insist on remaining as Drift's students. [[Grimlock (WFC)|Grimlock]] arrives through the [[GroundBridge]] in time to carry Drift back for repairs, and Optimus announces it's time they all returned the scrapyard.

The show follows the adventures of the core ''Beast Wars'' cast upon their return home to Cybertron; there, Optimus Primal and his crew find that the whole planet is abandoned, and the streets are patrolled by mindless [[Vehicon (BM)|Vehicon drones]] serving [[Megatron (BW)/Beast Wars cartoon continuity|Megatron]], who somehow escaped his captivity.

Worse still, they learn that they are infected with a deadly [[Transformation virus|virus]] that will kill them in a matter of hours. Salvation comes from the mysterious supercomputer known as the Oracle, who sees them fit to complete its mission of a planetwide "reformatting", and turns them into [[technorganic]] warriors, a perfect blend of organic and technological matter.

As the show progresses, Primal and his fellow Maximals learn to balance their technological side with their newly introduced organic aspects, mastery coming in slow stages. Unlike the previous [[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|conflict]], where sides had been roughly equal, the four original Maximals were quite outnumbered by their Vehicon enemies, and the battles took on a "guerilla warfare" feel, with the Maximals using sewers and underground levels to their advantage and avoiding surface levels unless for combat purposes. As the show progresses, two brand-new Maximals and a returning face boost their numbers.

Initially, Optimus is driven by a crusade to restore the organic above the technological and to right his failure to stop Megatron. Over time, it becomes increasingly clear that he's becoming obsessed and overzealous. At the midpoint, after Cybertron is almost destroyed, he realises that the point should be to create a ''balance'' of organic and technological, not a supremacy. Under this new, saner cause, the Maximals eventually turn Cybertron into an [[technorganic]] paradise, though at the cost of their [[Optimus Primal/Beast Wars cartoon continuity|leader]]'s life.

The series amassed many detractors early on, who complained that core cast portrayals were inconsistent with how these personalities had been established over the years of the preceding ''Beast Wars'' series. Examples include Megatron being a far grimmer villain with a completely different agenda from before; Rattrap appearing to be too cowardly; Rhinox apparently ''choosing'' to become a villain (though it sounded like he was no longer in his right mind) <ref>[http://www.bigbot.com/beast-machines-transformers-bob-skir/Beast-Machines-FAQ/Fri_03_Dec_1999.html Bob Skir Q&A]</ref>; and, later on, Silverbolt being a grim, vengeance-driven soldier with none of his former goofy-noble personality. Critics also alleged a "hippie" agenda behind ''Beast Machines'', with Optimus Primal becoming an anti-technology guru (it was actually intentional that Primal was going too far and he'd moderate his views in Season 2), and criticised Bob Skir's decision that the Maximals would not use guns (though big swords and highly destructive laser blasts were okay).

The show's "epic novel" storytelling structure meant that at times it was forced to tread water, relying on repetitive chase scenes and expository speeches. It was also, at that point in time, by far the most serialized American ''Transformers'' cartoon, making it difficult for new viewers to join at some random episode and be hooked in. It didn't help that the series began "in medias res" and with the characters suffering amnesia, with many foundational issues deliberately left vague until at last resolution was established in flashbacks in episodes 7-9. By then, [[Mainframe Entertainment|Mainframe]] executive [[Asaph Fipke]] had become somewhat notorious for repeatedly assuring fans that "all will be revealed". ''Why'' the series opened with the Maximals having amnesia and being in their Season 1 organic bodies is not obvious, as (aside from explaining why they're not immediately looking for Rhinox and Silverbolt) it wouldn't have affected the plot either way. It ''may'' have been because ''Beast Wars'' repeats were airing on [[Fox Kids]] at the same time ''Beast Machines'' had started.

The show is one of the darker ''Transformers'' animated series—even its fans will grant that it almost entirely lacks the humorous, occasionally zany approach of ''Beast Wars'', though this was a deliberate artistic choice—and the most thought-provoking. It is also the final animated entry into the Generation 1 story canon, bringing the events in that continuity family to a rather conclusive ending (which ''also'' didn't win it many popularity points). If nothing else, the creators had ambitions to do more than [[to sell toys|sell toys]].

Despite all the criticisms, the show continued and improved on the high production values of ''Beast Wars'', with solid scripting and excellent voice acting. The CGI varied from competent to gorgeous. A step up in quality from ''Beast Wars,'' it dramatically overshadows the later semi-CGI shows ''[[Transformers: Energon (cartoon)|Energon]]'' and ''[[Transformers: Cybertron (cartoon)|Cybertron]].'' Mainframe's animators showed their considerable talents in giving highly emotive expression to such alien characters as the [[Vehicon general]]s and even the [[Diagnostic Drone]], who ''didn't have a face''. As with ''Beast Wars'', [[Robert Buckley]] provided the series background music, this time creating a stylized electronic music in keeping with the mechanical environment of Cybertron.

With ''Beast Machines'' perhaps not quite living up to Hasbro's hopes, the [[Transtech|followup line]] to ''Beast Machines'' was subsequently scrapped. Hasbro's next foray into animation would be to bring over a [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (cartoon)|year-old Japanese show]] for consumption in the United States, till a [[Unicron Trilogy|new story]] could be concocted. The ''Beast Machines'' franchise was not initially released in Japan. As such, the ''Beast Machines'' cartoon did not reach Japan's shores until late 2004, where it was retitled '''''Super Lifeform Transformers: Beast Wars Returns''''' (超生命体トランスフォーマービーストウォーズリターンズ, ''Chō Seimeitai Transformers Beast Wars Returns''). The series was initially broadcast on the satellite-only network MobaHO! - TAKARAND from [[November 6]], 2004, to [[January 30]], 2005. In February of 2005, it was reaired on [[Cartoon Network|Cartoon Network Japan]] and, following that, other networks including Gifu Terebi.

The localization was headed up by [[Yoshikazu Iwanami]], the man responsible for the dubbing of ''[[Beast Wars: Transformers (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'', and thus ''Beast Wars Returns'' was reworked to the same extent as the previous series had been in Japan. The overblown jovial character quirks exclusive to the Japanese version of the series were retained while new quirks were created for the newer characters.

Perhaps most troubling of this satirical and humor-driven dub was [[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream]]'s characterization. Nightscream was turned into a flaming homosexual stereotype, lifting many quirks from the then-popular "Hard Gay" persona of comedian [[Wikipedia:Masaki Sumitani|Masaki Sumitani]] (including ripping off his catchphrase, "Fuu!"). Other homosexual stereotypes attached to Nightscream included a new obsession with fashion and style, highly effeminate petnames for other characters (such as calling Rattrap "Aunty"), and a more lustful infatuation with the character [[Noble]]. While effeminate, vaguely homosexual characters are not uncommon in Japanese ''Transformers'' cartoons (many Japanese incarnations of [[Starscream (disambiguation)|Starscream]] are ''preeeeetty'' gay), the portrayal of Nightscream in this manner was not particularly respectful. For example, as they were both flyers, Silverbolt often spent more time with Nightscream than he did Blackarachnia. Already feeling jilted due to Silverbolt's new standoffish personality, this regularly incited angry commentary from the jealous fembot, who derisively referred to Nightscream and Silverbolt as the "homo-tachi". This would be the same as her immaturely mocking them and calling them the "gay boys" in English.

Other changes included Megatron's various Vehicon drone forces taking on individual chants that they would repeat ad nauseum for every second of screen time. Additionally, one of the series' major plot twists was ignored for the sake of goofy adlibbing, as Thrust and Jetstorm retained not only the voice actors for Waspinator and Silverbolt, but all of the unique vocal and personality quirks belonging to those characters, thus eliminating any ambiguity to their previous identities. And needless to say, with this being a parody dub, all moments in the original version that were intended to be dramatic were reworked for comedy value.

Given the low-key release of the series, a new theme song was not recorded. Instead, "[[Phat Planet]]" by [[Leftfield]] was retained. Characters from the series would proceed to talk over the entire length of the [[title sequence]], having "amusing" conversations (likewise, they talked over the ending credits). Only one original piece of music was recorded for the series, "[[Megatron Ondo]]" by [[Yukio Hibariya]] and partly performed by [[Shigeru Chiba]], created exclusively for Volume 7 of the ''Beast Wars Returns'' DVD release.

The term "Dark side of the moon" was a misnomer even before Transformers got hold of it. The dark side of the moon refers to the side of the moon that always faces away from Earth. Here's what I'mma say on the subject of these generics.
*Brawl and Sideways - they're dead. Can't be them.
*Long Haul and Scrapper - Constructicons share body types. There are multiple iterations of each, and the DOTM appearance of these two should just be on the existing pages. Frankly, I've thought for a while the Constructicon pages could stand a bit of reworking to be about the body-types, rather than the individuals where applicable.
*Scalpel - he didn't die in ROTF. Sure, he died in the comic adaptation, but then, Barricade died in the TF1 adaptation, and Dino died instead of Que in the DOTM adaptation. So there's no saying with ''any'' certainty that Scalpel is dead, and one of those little guys could absolutely be him. This error is not actually an error.

"During Ironhide and Sideswipe's "Mexican standoff" with Crankcase and Crowbar, all combatants drop their firearms, but when Ironhide is speared, his guns are on his back again. They disappear in subsequent shots."

I recently watched this again and this scene stuck out. After they drop their weapons, one of them draws out the spears and the standoff ends. Sideswipe does a flip kick and then yells, "Ironhide, catch!" as he kicks over his gun to him. I don't have permission to make changes though.

Shortly after the Mexican Standoff scene, when Lennox tells Ironhide to guard Sentinel, he is seen transforming from his vehicle mode. He was already in robot mode just seconds before, while fighting the Dreads. [[Blurrzicon]]

In the shot directly following Optimus throwing down Megatron's shotgun after killing Sentinel, we see all of the surviving Autobots approaching - Bumblebee, Ratchet, Sideswipe, Dino/Mirage, and the three Wreckers. However, a little later, when Optimus begins his speech ("In any war, there are calms between storms"), and begins to walk down the bridge a little bit, Dino/Mirage and the Wreckers are nowhere to be seen, and the only Autobots present are the "core cast" of Optimus, Bumblebee, Ratchet and Sideswipe. I had a look through the Chicago scenes to see if I would work out which of Epps's squad was which by comparing them with their IMDB pictures. [[Hooch]] is pretty easy to spot because there are pictures of the actor in the role on IMDB. Josh Kelly as [[Stone]] likewise, though he doesn't have any TF3 images on his IMDB profile. I think [[Marc L]] is the fellow waiting with Hooch at the start in the "RANGERS" shirt, and later can be seen wearing a light-coloured cap. Assuming the named characters are the ones with dialogue, I guess that means that the guy with the backwards cap who points out they only have one rocket is [[Mongo (ROTF)|Mongo]] (Aaron Garrido, who has no photos at all on his IMDB article). It's apparent that it's proximity to earth has no effect, since we see no floating chunks of rock or cracks in the ground. also, the Autobots had the options of forcing Sentinel to return it, or just leave it as is and kill the Decepticons, because they're the threat, not Cybertron. Megs and Sentinel evidently didn't surrender once it was gone. on that note, how is shutting off the control Pillar different than destroying it? the bridge closes either way, so why did Cybertron collapse when the pillar was destroyed? still fun to think that there's a half of a giant metal honeycomb planet floating around somewhere out there.

== Quibble about an error ==

"It's said that four Autobots were captured by the Decepticons in Chicago, but actually five Autobots were captured."

Now, I'll declare my bias as "Gay for Bay" here and now, but to me this wasn't necessarily an error. We have the NEST types looking at their monitors and saying "four Autobots captured", with that little shot on the monitor. Then a few seconds later we ge the shot of Ratchet being herded towards an already-subdued quartet of Autobots. I read this as the four "car" Autobots being captured and noted by the NEST techie, then Ratchet is captured very soon afterwards bringing us up to five to be ineptly menaced by Soundwave and Barricade.

There are lots of problems with that whole sequence that might not exactly be continuity errors but are pretty inconsistent - how exactly are five Autobots captured basically unharmed in the most brutal TF universe to date?; why do they seem to be making next to no attempt to escape?; is Sentinel addressing them or what?; why does Soundwave need Dylan's prompting to begin executions (the way it's played Soundwave has no moral problem with the idea of killing prisoners, it just looks like he hasn't thought of it) - and point to it being a ham-fisted way of placing the Autobots (especially Bumblebee) in peril on first viewing when all bets are off after Ironhide's death, I didn't find the numeration to be contradictory. Confusing, but not contradictory.

One thing that does bother me, though, is Crankcase knocking over the sign in the highway battle. I'm open to correction and/or ridicule here, but surely there's no way the sign should fall that way (the ramp should be facing against the other two Dreads), and when they hit the thing there seems to be a lot of mass under there that shouldn't be on the back of a road sign anyway.

Per [http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/decimate Merriam-Webster], "decimate" can be legitimately used to mean "to reduce drastically especially in number". I grant that M-W is being descriptivist here, not prescriptivist, but I'm not sure we should spend so much time ragging on a use of the word that's supported by real dictionaries.
