Grimlock versus Shockwave!

Synopsis
The Dinobots and Ultra Magnus meet Shockwave in battle, but the cyclopean scientist proves to be surrounded by a forcefield that deflects their every attack. Knocked out by an electromagnetic pulse triggered by the Decepticon, the team is taken to Shockwave's laboratory, where Grimlock is strapped to an operating table and the others are jailed. As Grimlock struggles to escape, Shockwave explains that he created the Dinobots based on the hypothesis that a combination of intelligence and brute savagery was necessary to create the perfect soldier. Having observed the Dinobots in action since their escape from his clutches, however, he now postulates that sentience is not necessary, and fully unleashing that beast within Grimlock will transform him into the ideal warrior. As Shockwave sets about his wicked work, Grimlock recalls the last time he was trapped in this position, his previous escape and battle with Shockwave, and his being injured in the space bridge explosion that followed, left for dead until his fellow Dinobots came to his aid...

Elsewhere in the complex, Snarl tests the durability of their cell with his blaster while Ultra Magnus puts his mind to work thinking up an escape plan. He and Slug engage in a fake argument, during which Magnus threatens to blast the Dinobot, prompting the guards to come rushing in to prevent the untimely death of Shockwave's experiments. Slug and Magnus immediately turn on the guards and take them down, then quickly locate Shockwave's lab; Slug smashes into the wall, weakening it enough that a combined charge from all four Dinobots breaks it open, just before Shockwave makes the fateful incision into Grimlock's cranium. Caught by surprise, Shockwave is seized by his four former experiments and Magnus, and rather spectacularly torn limb from limb with one almighty pull. Grimlock is soon released from the table, but just as he is coming back to his senses, a hologram of Shockwave appears in the room and reveals that they have not killed him, but rather, slain only one of many avatars working on one of many labs all across the planet.

A little later, the Dinobots and Magnus gather at a spacecraft, ready to take off and join Optimus Prime's fleet. Grimlock informs Magnus that the Dinobots will not be going, instead remaining on their homeworld to save the few 'bots still there, as well as to hunt down Shockwave and finish him once and for all. Magnus bids them farewell, affirming them has his fellow Autobots, and takes off as the Dinobots head out for further adventures.
Notes
* During Grimlock's flashback to events of the Fall of Cybertron video game, what's seen of Shockwave and Starscream are their War for Cybertron bodies. This issue also patches up a gap in continuity between the end of the game and the start of this mini-series, showing us what happened to Grimlock after the space bridge explosion that ended his role in the game (one of the elevated platforms that level was set on crumbled beneath him and he fell and wound up buried in rubble until the other Dinobots found him).
* Continuing the approach taken by IDW's Fall of Cybertron comic, Earth's dinosaurs are specifically referred to as "ancient", again affirming that Shockwave looked into Earth's past, and that the game is not set—as High Moon Studios promotional material often claimed—contemporaneously with the era of living dinosaurs.
Angry Birds Transformers is a mobile app for both iPhone and Android platforms developed and published by Rovio. It is a themed version of the developer's mega-popular mobile game Angry Birds.

Synopsis
The Allspark Egg has landed on Piggy Island, transforming its dueling inhabitants and giving them bodies and powers based on the Transformers: the birds of the Flock become Autobirds and the Bad Piggies the Deceptihogs. The two sides briefly continue their struggle with these new powers until they are both threatened by another transformed group, the Eggbots, who seek to transform all of Piggy Island into metal, backed by countless robotized Minion Pigs.

Most of the Autobirds and all of the Deceptihogs are captured leaving only Red (who has the powers of Optimus Prime) and Chuck (with the powers of Bumblebee) free. The two head out to free the Autobirds and Deceptihogs, because only by joining forces can they restore Piggy Island to normal!

Gameplay
The game is a deviation from the normal Angry Birds formula, but the core goal, toppling block towers to pop the Bad Piggies on them, is the same.

Once you select an available stage from the map of Piggie Island, your chosen character runs along the foreground at a set speed, as block towers scroll by in the background. By tapping the screen, your character takes aim and fires their weapon. The trick is to quickly determine which blocks in the structure are best to destroy/shove to cause a domino effect, toppling them and popping the Piggies by dropping blocks on them or making them fall far enough. (Remember, weaker blocks are not always the best target!)

Block types include:
:*Glass Blocks: Very weak, easily shattered
:*Wood Blocks: Fairly sturdy but not hard to break
:*Stone Blocks: Very durable, better for pushing than breaking
:*TNT Blocks: Easily-broken red crates that explode with a wide range, sending blocks flying
:*Coin Blocks: Golden blocks that spit out Coins with every hit. Pretty dang sturdy

Most areas also have random destructible elements that can be blasted. The more destruction you cause, the more Coins you get to buy upgrades and explore new areas. Each level has a set length; you do not have to pop every Piggie to pass, merely survive to the end.

"Survive"? Yeah. Some Piggies are weaponized and will begin to attack shortly after appearing on-screen. Thus, popping these Piggies (or at least upending them to throw off their aim) quickly becomes essential. You can also try to escape attacks and falling giant stone statues by transforming to vehicle mode. This speeds you along a bit, but removes your ability to attack, plus you can only maintain vehicle mode for a limited time. Attacking automatically transforms you back to robot mode. There are other obstacles that can decrease a character's health bar; lose all your life and the character is taken out of the game for a time, but they will eventually return. While you will not earn Piggie points for the level, you do keep any Coins you collected. Health does not restore between levels, so if a character is low you must spend Coins to repair them, which also takes them out of the game for a while, but not as long as defeat does. This time-out is in real-time, even when the game is off, but you can spend earned Crystals or scan a figure with a Telepod to make the repairs instantaneous.

Cleared stages will slowly earn Coins over real-time. Tapping on the Coins on the map adds them to your bank. There are also occasional treasure chests on the map, tap them to earn more Crystals. However, roaming Eggbots will re-cyberform cleared stages, which removes their Coin bonuses. You can see which stages they are working on, how long the cyberforming process will take, and even speed up their work (at the cost of Crystals). This too goes on in real-time. Once a stage is re-cyberformed, it can be played again.

Character choices
Every stage has a pre-set character you control, based on who you've rescued so far. Every character has a different style of attack, movement speed, and armor rating, as well as an unlockable secondary move (which must be fueled first by blasting a cyberformed piece of scenery to return it to normal, which is not always as easy as it sounds). Working out the strengths and weaknesses of each character is key to high scores, and in some cases simple survival. (See each characters' individual page for a breakdown of their abilities.)

New characters can be added to your roster in two different ways. In-game, each character is held captive in a block of ice, and you must "spend" a specific number of popped Piggies to break them out. You then have to play a short level with that character, and if they make it to the end, they're yours to keep. If not, they are re-frozen, but thankfully you can try again without having to spend all those hard-earned Piggy points again.

Out-of-game, this is where you spend actual-factual money, on the tie-in toys. By placing one of the figures on a Telepod and placing that on your device's camera lens, the game reads the code on the figure and inserts it into the game for a limited amount of time (roughly 6 hours). Some variant characters can only be obtained via Telepod. While the characters unlocked this way are only available temporarily until unlocked via Piggie points, there is no limit on how often you can scan the figure, plus any upgrade progress is saved. You can also use this method to power-up already-unlocked characters before a stage or speed up their repairs without spending Crystals; again there is no limit to the number of times you can scan (but the effects will not stack).

Every character can be upgraded multiple times by spending Coins, which (of course) takes them out of play for a while. Each upgrade is pre-set, increasing attack strength, armor strength, or vehicle mode duration. At certain levels, new abilities are unlocked. You can spend much-rarer Crystals to make the upgrade happen instantly; the closer the upgrades are to complete, the less Crystals you need to spend. Upgrading characters is vital as the levels get harder and harder. You can only have one character undergoing upgrades at a time, though, which tempts you to spend those Crystals....

Soon you get the option to have a second character on standby, who you can call in and have the computer control for a brief period. They enter the stage with a slo-mo that does heavy damage to most of the Glass blocks and Piggies on-screen. However, there's a limit to when you are able to call in a partner; once you see your transport fly overhead, your partner's no longer available. On the other hand, the stage is close to over! But if your partner is already out when you hit that checkpoint, then they will stay active until the very end of the level, nice for really piling on the destruction.

You get to see your partner before you start the stage, and if you don't like that character choice, you can change it by spending some Coins. Partners are either randomly generated, or pulled from the character rosters of your friends if you've connected to the game via Facebook or Google+ or iTunes or whatever the social network stuff the kids are into these days is. If you called on them in the level, you can "thank" them afterward. Doing so gives the other player a nominal reward (either a Crystal or 25 Coins), while not thanking them simply tells the other player that while you're grateful for the firepower assist, you don't think they deserve any actual compensation. You jerk.

Ads and upsells
It's a free game, so how does Rovio make its money? By copious amounts of ads (largely for other games) and by enticing you to spend real currency on in-game currency.

The ads can actually have a gameplay effect, in a disturbingly clever move. After completing a stage, you are given the option to watch a short video ad; doing so doubles your end-of-stage rewards. When chosing a partner for a stage, you will also get a prompt to watch an ad; doing so gives your partner a one-stage stat boost and ups the amount of time they can stay in-play. However, you can only watch so many ads within a set amount of time, so choose which bonuses you go for wisely. And of course, sometimes ads will just pop up anyway.

Spending real monies allows you to buy large numbers of Crystals, which are used to speed up character upgrades, repairs, and re-opening stages. Given that those can take literal hours to finish, leaving you with no stages available to play til the required characters are back in commission, it gets tempting to drop some coin of the real variety.

Of course, you can get the same repair/upgrade speed-up effects with a Telepod-activated figure... which also costs real monies.

God Ginrai is reborn as the ferocious Victory Leo, but will he be a threat to the Autobots as well as the Decepticons?

Synopsis
With the Shuttle Base berthed on a small Hawaiian island, Perceptor and Wheeljack begin the process to reconstruct God Ginrai according to the design specifications created by Star Saber. A tense atmosphere fills the base, with Jean hit the hardest. The Multiforce soon find something to take their minds off the situation, however, when they discover Hellbat's Breast Animal spying on the base. Machtackle and Dashtacker fall victim to the Breastforcer's hypnotic waves, but Wingwaver avoids them and engages the villain in an aerial battle above the ocean. Hellbat escapes by diving beneath the waves and quickly makes his way back to the submerged Thunder Arrow, where he reports to Deathsaurus on the apparent death of Ginrai. Additionally, Hellbat has discovered a large stockpile of energy in western America, which the Decepticons quickly mobilize to attack while the Autobots are low on manpower.

Back in the Shuttle Base, the Autobots gather as the reconstruction process is completed, and the recreated, reborn God Ginrai emerges—now, he is Victory Leo. Jean and Holi sneak in to visit Victory Leo while his freshly connected circuits are still stabilizing, and they are overjoyed to discover that he still possesses some of God Ginrai's memories and knows their names. Suddenly, Victory Leo convulses in pain and asks that they leave him to rest. Mere moments after they depart, however, a screaming Victory Leo comes smashing through the door, transforms into his lion mode, and begins rampaging through the base. The Autobots chase Victory Leo to the medical bay, where Perceptor and Wheeljack are working on Star Saber's wounds, and Jean gets between the feral Autobot and the Supreme Commander. After a few tense moments, Victory Leo turns and bounds out of the room, and Star Saber and Perceptor explain that Victory Leo's circuits are not yet properly balanced. As Victory Leo returns to his room to stalk around, a tearful Jean looks over a scrapbook of photos of God Ginrai, refusing to believe that his friend is alive within in the animalistic Autobot.

As if things weren't bad enough, the Autobots are soon alerted to the appearance of the Dinoforce on the "Energy Road" that leads to the energy stockpile in America. The Multiforce head out to investigate and are met by Hellbat and Leozack while the Dinoforce attack the approaching tractor-trailer, which is carrying a full load of energy. The Multiforce merge into Landcross to fight back, but the Dinoforce form Dinoking in response, and the two combiners battle while Laster and Braver arrive to tackle Leozack and Hellbat.

At the Shuttle Base, Blacker prepares to join the fight, but Star Saber stops him, aware that he is still not fully over his own injuries. Star Saber attempts to head out himself, but can barely even stand, when Victory Leo, still in beast mode, appears in the doorway. Star Saber decides to send him out in his place, despite Blacker and Jean's reservations, and Victory Leo wastes no time in flying to the battleground. He crashes into Leozack and Hellbat in mid-air, knocking them out of the sky and making short work of their Breast Animals, and then turns on Dinoking. Separated from his battle staff, Dinoking grabs the nearest weapon he can find: one of the canisters of energy from the tractor-trailer. Before he can hurl it, however, Victory Leo opens fire and strikes the canister, causing it to explode and blasting Dinoking into his component parts. The Decepticons retreat as the shocked Autobots watch Victory Leo take off into the air.

Everyone returns to the Shuttle Base to discover that Star Saber has summoned Greatshot, hoping that he will take over from God Ginrai as commander of the Sector Two Defense Force. Greatshot is unsure, but Star Saber highlights his own injured condition and the Autobots' diminished manpower, and Greatshot takes the job, on the basis that he reserves the right to quit without objection. Star Saber accepts, but as the furious roars of Victory Leo echo through the base, the Autobots realize that they must awaken the heart of their friend God Ginrai within Victory Leo before it is too late...
Quotes
The following quotes are from the Omni Productions dub

"The operation is very complicated. For safety reasons, they decide to do it in Hawaii."
:—The Narrator

Notes
Continuity errors
* Dash tells Waver to take the drivers of the energy tanker to safety, but it is Tackle who drives up and carries them off. Which is only sensible, really, since getting on a boat wasn't going to do them much good in the middle of the desert.

Continuity notes
*Ginrai and Star Saber received their fatal injuries in "A Deadly Battle". The former's reconstruction process began in the previous episode.
* Blacker's doing a bit better than them, but is still not entirely over the wounds he received in "Crisis! Ambush in the Desert".
* Greatshot returns after his last appearance in "Crisis! Ambush in the Desert".

Trivia
* This episode broke from the show's normal schedule by airing on a Wednesday, only one day after the previous episode.
* Yet another episode to eschew one of the show's two stock title cards.
* As in the previous episode, there is an oddly conscious effort to refrain from naming guest-stars Wheeljack, Perceptor and Minerva, identifying Perceptor only as "the Autobots' greatest technician."
* Victory Leo's "flight mode" (like Sixshot's "Wingwolf" mode, Overlord's "space jet" mode and BlackZarak's "dakatsu" mode before it) is not part of the toy's official instructions, as it was created by the production staff of the anime by fiddling around with it.
* So apparently Boater can fly and drive around on land fine while in his alternate mode.

Foreign localization
English
:*Title: "Go to Battle, Victory Leo" (Omni Productions dub)
:**Greatshot has a different voice from his last appearance, and appears to have developed a Texan accent.
:** Jean is upset that Ginrai's becoming a different being, rather than concern at the Autobot having to bear the pain of the procedure.
:** Wingwaver identifies Kōmoribreast as Hellbat.
:** Hellbat says he tailed an Autobot shuttle back to Shuttle Base, instead of detecting the base directly.
:** A line from Dash addressing Waver is altered so he's addressing "Bashtaser", Dashtacker's dub name. The translators were probably confused by the continuity error as noted above, but they still got the wrong Multiforce member!
IDW Generation 1 continuity
<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doctor Doom</span> discovered the Decepticons had built a dome in the old country. Unwilling to have his people destroyed by mere machinery, <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> attempted to remove their presence with an army of Doombots, but alas, we were overwhelmed and they captured the Psycho-Prism, a device that can drive a sane man mad.

The Avengers and Autobots arrived to investigate, but their ignorance led them to waste time by combating each other. <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> took matters into his own hands and broke Wolverine's Decepticon-induced rage, clarifying matters for the useless teams, and left, telling them <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> was to broker peace with Symkaria. Man and Machine, Part Two

But <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> had deceived them, having allied with the Decepticons to let him rule the planet after they devastated it. When the heroes failed to surrender despite an ultimatum from <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> and Megatron, Megatron took out his frustration on your King, shocking him into unconsciousness! Man and Machine, Part Three
He led Wolverine to destroy the Psycho-Prism, while insulting and making his allies feel generally worthless. Man and Machine, Part Four
When Richards and Stark started constructing giant transforming battlesuits for himself and other superheroes, <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doctor Doom</span> responded by creating his own ones for Venom and Carnage.
Notes
*<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doctor Doom</span> was actually in Hell when New Avengers/Transformers took place (<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> escaped). Confused commoners may chalk this discrepancy to <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span>'s replicas.
*As well as attending his Christmas party, <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> once battled that idiotic hanger-on of the Autobots, Combat Colin! (And he lost, which was so humiliating that <span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Doom</span> wondered if he could beat up Thomas the Tank Engine.) Kaon was known to be one of the worst places on Cybertron. Thus, Sentinel Prime was operating out there at the time Megatron and his fellow miners had chosen it as their place of hiding. One of Kaon's notable features was a series of underground gladiatorial combats run by Clench...until Megatron killed him and took over the games as a method of recruiting gladiators into the Decepticon army. After being freed by Starscream and Soundwave, the Decepticons launched an attack on Kaon and took control of the city, using it as their base to direct the campaign against the Autobots. The Transformers: Megatron Origin As the first city to fall to the Decepticons, Kaon marked the beginning of the Fall of the First Five Cities. Life After the Big Bang
Built on a plateau three times the size of Iacon, Kaon was the industrial heart of Cybertron, where nameless members of the low castes toiled endlessly. It was a dark, smoking mess of a city that was impossible to navigate without the Communication Grid. The High Council ignored the emerging gladiatorial combat in the areas surrounding Kaon, acknowledging it was the inhabitants' only escape in their lives. A champion taking the name Megatronus emerged. This Megatron took control of the gladiators and formed the Decepticons. His base was a single, large pyramid.

During the war, Optimus Prime, Jazz and Prowl rescued Sentinel Prime from the pyramid, which had become Kaon Prison. Megatron and Shockwave had made a deal with the Underworlders to chain the prisoners underground. Kaon is the Decepticons' capital city and home to a massive prison complex where Autobot captives, including Autobot leader Zeta Prime, are held. Megatron put Soundwave in command of the Kaon Prison Complex. The prisoners there are loaded onto Decepticon Dropships. The dropships transport the prisoners from any battlefield to Kaon Prison, where they are either escorted to cells, executed, or sent to 'recycling', where the prisoners are thrown into a strong current and crushed in a masher. The city houses huge industrial buildings, which may include weapons manufacturing, or experimental labs.
During the Decepticons' assault of Iacon, Soundwave raided an Autobot outpost, taking several prisoners and most of the outpost's energon supply. :Brainstorm is an Autobot Headmaster and one of the most <s>famous</s> notorious inventors from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Brainstorm is a never-ending font of ideas. Whether he's in the middle of a battle or consciously working on another of his projects, new ideas are the background noise of his mind, sometimes to such an extent that his brain will overheat. In his zeal to see these ideas realized, Brainstorm sometimes forgets about things like "basic safety" and "proper experimental procedure". He will happily hand out new and untested inventions to less-than-responsible comrades for field-testing. His inventions range from useful biotechnology, to outlandish anti-personnel weaponry, to devices that harness the bizarre and unthinkable.

Brainstorm is at least partly responsible for developing the Headmaster process. It's sometimes hard to tell how much of it was his doing and how much was his Headmaster partner Arcana's, the two work together so seamlessly.

noteukonly

After Optimus Prime and his troops aboard the Ark went missing, Brainstorm was one of several under the leadership of Fortress Maximus. Their faction was mired in a seemingly endless war with a band of Decepticons led by Scorponok, in a struggle so pointless and self-perpetuating that Fortress Maximus decided to leave Cybertron and its war and settle on the peaceful planet Nebulos. Brainstorm followed Fortress Maximus' lead, building the Steelhaven and departing their war-torn home.

It would not be so easy. The Nebulans were xenophobic towards the strange robots which invaded their world, and after several missteps in communication, Fortress Maximus, Brainstorm, and a handful of others surrendered their heads as hopeful proof of their benevolence and compliance. Ring of Hate!

When the Decepticons arrived on Nebulos, Fortress Maximus and Brainstorm's heads convinced Galen to attempt the creation of hybrid warriors through a bio-mechanical engineering process. An experimental surgeon named Arcana constructed the necessary equipment based on the Autobots' theories and underwent the process himself along with several other Nebulans, binary bonding with Brainstorm. Broken Glass!

During an adventure that happened at some unspecified point that was logically impossible given the circumstances, Brainstorm and the other Autobot Headmasters fought the Decepticon Headmasters while the Autobot Targetmasters were held captive by the Decepticons. Mindwipe hypnotized Brainstorm, causing him to crash into Hardhead, and in general, the Autobots put up a terrible fight. But Brainstorm refused to give up and abandon their captured comrades. The four attacked the Decepticons' Fortress of Despair and were overwhelmed, but because the Autobots learned to work together with their new Nebulan partners, they were able to rescue the Targetmasters. Worlds Apart!

The new Headmasters managed to drive off the Decepticons, but also inadvertently created a new "arms race", as the Decepticons later created Headmasters of their own, and both sides also implemented Targetmaster warriors as well. Fearing things could only get worse for Nebulos, Fortress Maximus and Galen took the excuse of an intercepted distress signal from Earth to abandon Nebulos and prevent the war from causing any further harm to the planet. Brothers in Armor!!

On the way to Earth, Brainstorm re-engineered Fortress Maximus to be larger and stronger than ever before. Then, he and Arcana managed to triangulate the Autobot signal to Mount St. Hilary. This led into their first battle with Scorponok's forces on Earth and to the death of Galen. Trial by Fire!

As the Steelhaven orbited the Earth, Brainstorm was kept busy building Goldbug a new body, repairing the injured Fortress Maximus and assisting in the creation of the Autobot Pretenders. Pretender to the Throne! Unfortunately, those projects used up most of the group's available resources and prevented the proper recreation of Optimus Prime. The project proceeded despite Brainstorm's accurate warnings of failure. Totaled!
Brainstorm was displaced to Limbo along with a handful of other Autobots when Rodimus Prime traveled to the past with a group of Autobots of his own. Time Wars Later, he was one of the victims of a rogue Autobot Mark V Guardian droid, which resulted in him being thrown from the Ark and landing at the feet of Optimus Prime. Twenty-one years after the death of Arcana and destruction of Brainstorm's original body, Nebulos had signed an Interplanetary Trade Treaty with Cybertron, which included Project Lazarus—a project to build new bodies for the original heads of the now-deceased Headmasters. Grimlock reviewed transmissions in which Senior Scientist Borx explained that the initial attempts had led to extreme pain and complete rejection of the new bodies, including footage of a disastrous attempt at integrating Brainstorm's head with a new body, until data from Zarak's old files improved the process. Loose Ends, Part 2

However, this "unauthorised" decryption awakened the original head of Scorponok. Aided by knowledge gleamed from his binary bond with the deceased Zarak, he was able to enslave the Nebulans, complete Project Lazarus, and have them build a "mint replica of [his] original body". Natural Selection, Part One With the aid of Grimlock's Nucleon-soaked CNA, who he had captured while seeking a new body for himself and the other Nucleon victims, he completed another project—to create a "Gene Key" which could mute the consciences of Autobots, turning them into "Decepticons". Natural Selection, Part Two The rebuilt Brainstorm—whose faceplate had apparently been forcibly removed, leaving a discolored lower face—was one of the three subjects he demonstrated this on, along with Highbrow and Hardhead, and as soon as they were freed, they proceeded to attack Grimlock for wearing an Autobot symbol. After Brainstorm had been chucked around a bit by Grimlock, Scorponok stopped them, as Grimlock was now working for him under blackmail anyway. They proceeded to travel to Cybertron to begin converting the populace into Decepticons. As soon as they landed at Iacon's Civil Defense Hub, the twisted Autobots shot the shocked Slapdash in the face. Leaving him for dead, they then marched in and began killing Civil Defense Force members until the coast was clear for Scorponok. Natural Selection, Part Two

Later, he stormed through Iacon, turning Autobots with the Gene Key, blindsiding Overdrive amongst others. As the Omnibot roared away, eager to cause chaos, Brainstorm turned on Grimlock, who had been wandering the city searching for the Dinobots, telling him that Scorponok had ordered him back to the Civil Defense Hub and escorting him there. Natural Selection, Part Three. While searching for the other Dinobots, Grimlock activated an alarm at the Nursery, where Slag was being held, which drew the Dinobots there as well as Brainstorm, Darkwing and Dreadwind. Grimlock then shot open the containment capsule holding Inferno. With his temperature spiking to dangerous levels, owing to his Nucleon exposure, Inferno begged them to get clear to no avail—as Grimlock intended, the resulting blast incapacitated Brainstorm and the two Decepticons. Natural Selection, Part Four

Ultimately, Perceptor corrupted Scorponok's "master" Gene Key, intended to convert holdouts across the whole planet, and all the affected were converted back into "Autobots", including Brainstorm. Natural Selection, Part Five Though they wouldn't have been held accountable for their actions while altered by the Gene Key, the three former Headmasters turned themselves in to be tried as war criminals, unable to live with the thought of what they were capable of. Destiny, Part One

Brainstorm later took part in the assault on Jhiaxus's Hub Network but was then captured and held at the Corral, and later executed along with Joyride, Sky High and Crosshairs when Rodimus couldn't call off the Wreckers. The War to End All Wars, Part 4
Brainstorm was first seen on Cybertron, touting his new theory that an integration of human and Autobot would dramatically enhance their fighting abilities. Most of the other Autobots, though, thought he was a crackpot. Things turned around when he and a group of Autobots met a band of freedom fighters while stranded on the planet Nebulos. With several comrades kidnapped and the safety of the <s>MacGuffin</s> key to the Plasma Energy Chamber in jeopardy, the Autobots arranged to bond with the Nebulan soldiers. With the help of their partners, the Autobot Headmasters freed their comrades and drove off the Decepticons. Unfortunately, their foes then joined forces with the freedom fighters' enemies, a group of evil machinesmiths called the Hive. They also created a new form of binary bonding called Targetmasters. The revitalized Decepticons returned and engaged the Autobots in battle anew. Mindwipe detected the key on Brainstorm and managed to disarm him. Several Hive agents then swarmed Brainstorm and removed the key from him, but he was able to run a full spectrum exo-scan on Nightstick, one of the Targetmaster partners, before they got away. With that information, Brainstorm was able to recreate the Targetmaster process for the Autobots. The Rebirth, Part 2
When the Cassettes refused the mission, Brainstorm blocked their way, wanting to know what their problem was. The Headmasters were sent to Praum to investigate reports of a Decepticon attack. It turned out to be a trap set by Scorponok, but the five Headmasters remembered their struggles back on Master and swapped Transtectors in order to escape. Brainstorm made great use of Highbrow's Transtector during the ensuing battle against the Decepticons. The Four-Million-Year-Old Veil of Mystery While investigating a mysterious blackmailer, the Headmasters checked out the Statue of Liberty. Before the war, Brainstorm went on anti-apartheid marches. While his "equal rights for knockoffs!" talk made him sound like he was a forged Transformer, he was actually constructed cold. Remain in Light 1 of 5: The Fecund MoonRemain in Light 5 of 5: This Calamitous Life

After the downfall of Sentinel Prime, Zeta Prime opened the "New" Institute as part of his reformative program. Among the young scientists recruited for the institution was the 'bot soon nicknamed "Brainstorm" by his peers. Two of his co-workers received similar nicknames as "Chromedome" and "Highbrow". The Reluctant Specialist Overly eager and far more likely to ask "Can it be done?" rather than "Should it be done?", Brainstorm fit in well with the vaguely (and sometimes, not so vaguely) amoral experiments and research performed by Zeta's staff.

On one occasion, Brainstorm and Chromedome survived a raid on the New Institute by Overlord and Starscream to rescue Soundwave. Remembrance Day Although Chromedome left the New Institute after that near-death experience, he and Brainstorm remained close friends. In fact, Chromedome once remarked that he was Brainstorm's only friend, and Brainstorm didn't correct him. Rules of Disengagement For all his flaws, Brainstorm stood by the quick-to-love Chromedome as the war went on and he lost three Conjunx Endura, even though he felt disappointed in Chromedome for using his mnemosurgery skills to wipe his own painful memories after each loss rather than remember his fallen partners. The Gloaming

When the Great War broke out, Brainstorm joined the Autobots under the newly-minted Optimus Prime. Ironhide didn't think much of Brainstorm's chances of survival in the early days of the war. All Hail Megatron issue 13#"Old Ways" He briefly appeared among the Autobot troops fighting Megatron and the Decepticons on Cybertron in the distant past. All Hail Megatron issue 1 However, at some point during the war he was recruited by the Decepticons as a spy. slaughterhouse Part 2: The Road Not Taken

He was later stationed at the Kimia Facility, working on lots of experimental technology and weaponry for the Autobot cause, where his designs were often considered the insane standard that all other weapon designers in Kimia held themselves to. More than any other Autobot, he had beaten a path to Room 113 where his creations were time and time again rejected by the Ethics Committee as violations of the Non-Conventional Weapons Act. Undaunted by the rejections, Brainstorm continued to dream up more outlandish and dangerous weapons in his time at Kimia. His most daring inventions were referred to as the "Unmentionables". Bullets

On Prowl's orders, he (alongside Perceptor) used Pretender technology to rebuild Kup into a sane, rejuvenated 'bot. All Hail Megatron issue 15#"Everything in Its Right Place"

At Ironfist's request, Brainstorm agreed to go over the gun that misfired the cerebro-sensitive bullet into Ironfist's skull, looking for what went wrong with the firing mechanism. Brainstorm let the review fall into his backlog for several months, probably because Ironfist neglected to mention the accident had left a bullet in his skull, slowly killing him. Brainstorm finally reported back just as Ironfist was leaving for the Wreckers, revealing his findings that showed the gun had been rigged to go off at a certain angle. The saboteur, Skyfall, wasn't apprehended until nine months later, so Brainstorm apparently did nothing to follow up on his findings after alerting Ironfist. Bullets

Brainstorm and the other scientists were caught by surprise when Cyclonus and the Sweeps invaded Kimia. Chaos Part One: Lamentations He survived and managed to escape before the facility's destruction, leaving in an escape pod together with Chromedome and a number of other Autobots. They were soon rescued by "a psychopath in pink armor". Chaos Part Three: Kings From her, they learned that they had to save the universe by stopping Galvatron from letting the Dead Universe into it. Brainstorm had a hard time grasping all this, and together with Chromedome wondered if any species other than Cybertronians ever had to deal with this kind of problem. Chaos Part Four: Genesis

As part of his interest in the Dead Universe, Brainstorm examined Hardhead, and during the procedure was struck by an energy discharge from Nova Prime's corpse, which he'd been keeping in his lab. Black Planet: Dark Cybertron Chapter 11 Brainstorm was one of the Autobots who chose to accompany Rodimus on his quest to find the Knights of Cybertron. After some convincing, Red Alert allowed Brainstorm to board the Lost Light without checking his briefcase. But as soon as the ship lifted off, an explosion had sent it into quantum jump and had to land on a far, desolate planet. Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It Brainstorm and Perceptor investigated what had caused the accident. Although they didn't find the exact cause, they did find something interesting. After Rodimus had insulted his intelligence, Brainstorm informed him that they found a Duobot had stood right next to the quantum generator when it failed, and was "totally mashed into the generator itself". He then made a joke about their deceased comrade, leaving Rodimus a bit taken aback at Brainstorm's callousness. In turn, this left Brainstorm panicking over the idea Ultra Magnus might have heard the joke, but Rodimus just ordered him into the air to join the search for survivors. Liars, A to D Part 2: Hangers On‎
When a Sparkeater was loose aboard the Lost Light, Brainstorm found himself trapped in an elevator with the creature, which had been hunting Rung. Brainstorm cried out that he was too smart to die and held up his briefcase in an attempt to ward the Sparkeater off. Fortunately for him, the Sparkeater decided to continue chasing Rung, leaving Brainstorm flustered, but unharmed. Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things

Soon after receiving a Rodimus Star (along with his ex-colleagues Highbrow and Chromedome) for helping to save the Lost Light after it was hit by a piece of Metroplex debris, an experiment of Brainstorm's went wrong and froze everyone on the ship, except for the forcefield-enclosed Trailcutter. Despite the near-disaster this caused when the ship was invaded during this time by a group of Metrotitan-hunting Decepticons led by Lockdown (not to mention the near-death of an away team who had crashed on a planet protected by a phobia shield and were unable to raise help from the disabled crew The Waiting Game), he still received a huge plaque engraved with a stylised Rodimus figure "for exceptional endurance in the face of adversity" along with the rest of the frozen crew, which P.O.ed Trailguy - who had driven the Decepticons off singlehandedly and only received a "normal" Rodimus Star for his effort - no end. The Reluctant Specialist

Later, new arrival Fortress Maximus went loopy and shot down Dogfight near Brainstorm, who... protected his briefcase. Of course, he later claimed he had tried to stop Maximus. Interiors Following this incident, Rodimus tasked Brainstorm with developing an evasive bullet that would avoid hitting innocent bystanders. Chromedome had Brainstorm to look into the handgun that Skids had been constantly (and unknowingly) carrying with him, but when Brainstorm tried to examine it, the gun exploded in his face. He determined that it only held two cartridges and thus dubbed it a "binary gun", much to Chromedome's annoyance. Brainstorm also offered the opinion that the gun was possibly from the Institute. Rules of Disengagement

When a bunch of Nanocons mysteriously reactivated inside Ultra Magnus, Brainstorm used his mass-displacement gun to shrink Rodimus and some of the crew members to eliminate them. After the situation was handled, Brainstorm attended Tailgate's Autobot Initiation Ceremony where Jackpot placed bets on how long it was going to take for Rodimus to say his famous line, 'Til all are one. Brainstorm bet on eight seconds to the gambling bot's surprise. Despite being three seconds ahead, he still won the bet. Upon reaching Theophany, an encounter with the Galactic Council led to Rodimus and others being teleported to the planet's surface, Brainstorm among them. When they arrived, they found the Circle of Light missing and Crystal City in ruins. As they explored the ruins underground, they came across a Metrotitan. The group discovered the Metrotitan had found Cybertron's "come home" signal but was too low on energy to free himself and return, causing it to scream and try to kill itself by willing its spark to leave its body, which caused the revival of the Nanocons and various deactivated crew members of the Lost Light. With the Galactic Council's troops coming downwards to get them and the Lost Light under attack, Rodimus decided to set the Metrotitan free to help them out of their situation. Brainstorm used his mass displacement cannon to shrink the Metrotitan and gave the large robot more energy. Now able to move, the Metrotitan was able to teleport the Autobots back to their ship, quantum-jump the Lost Light to safety and teleport itself to Cybertron. Primus: You, Me, and Other Revelations

After previously wondering why the <s>forcef-</s> magnawheels guy would feel the need for a handheld gun The Reluctant Specialist, Brainstorm would ultimately build guns into Trailbreaker's legs, presumably relating to the latter's envy at Fortress Maximus's leg-guns. Soon afterward, he gave a new gun to Whirl to field test, which the mad helicopter dubbed the "Shoomer" after the noise it made. As soon as Swerve got his hands on it, he proceeded to accidentally shoot himself in the face. Before & After Surprisingly, he survived. As did the luckless Pipes when shot by Brainstorm's existential gun, despite a near-fatal dose of ennui. Cybertronian Homesick Blues

Throughout the early months of the voyage of the Lost Light, Brainstorm and several others were interviewed by Rewind for his documentary. Also caught on film was Brainstorm participating in Tailgate's "alt-mode party," which was just a ruse to figure out what Rung transforms into. Little Victories

When Rewind suffered a near-death experience in battle, Brainstorm and Drift brought Chromedome in on Project: Total Insanity, Brainstorm's helpful nickname for the fact that Overlord was secretly on board the Lost Light. He provided Chromedome with the security codes necessary to access the slow cell attached to the underwide of the ship (nicknamed Project: End In Tears). Remembrance Day Perhaps because of the prophetic project name, Overlord soon escaped from the slow cell during one of Chromedome's visits to pilfer his memories. Brainstorm was in the middle of chiding Swerve for fooling around with his metafictional bomb when the alarms sounded, indicating a scene change. Under Cold Blue Stars

After Overlord's rampage cost the lives of Rewind and many other crew members, Brainstorm was sincerely worried about Chromedome. When the funeral was over, Brainstorm confronted him in his habitation suite about the shadowplay Chromedome performed on himself after the deaths of his last three Conjunx Endurae. Brainstorm begged him not to extract his memories of Rewind too, because that would mean Rewind was truly gone. The Gloaming

At some point, Brainstorm fitted Swerve's bar with an elaborate defense system and built My First Blaster™ for the bartender himself, as he was a notoriously poor shot. Remain in Light 2 of 5: House of Ambus

When the Lost Light travelled through a portal and rediscovered the lost Luna 1, Rodimus selected Brainstorm to be part of the landing party. On the surface they discovered a reignited "hot spot" of sparks, including a Point One Percenter which Brainstorm immediately set about harvesting before they were attacked by Lockdown's Decepticons. Remain in Light 1 of 5: The Fecund Moon Though they fled into a field of deactivated titans, Brainstorm and the Lost Lighters were captured and imprisoned by the insane Tyrest where they found themselves sharing a cell with the mysterious Minimus Ambus, later revealed to be none other than Ultra Magnus. Remain in Light 2 of 5: House of Ambus After Ambus departed to get answers from Tyrest, they were joined in the cell by Skids, Swerve and Getaway Remain in Light 3 of 5: The Divided Self who used the spring-loaded clasps from Brainstorm's briefcase to help them escape. Confronting Tyrest, Brainstorm was shot by the traitorous medic Pharma which separated him from his briefcase. To compound matters, Tyrest activated a "weapon of mass suggestion" based on Getaway's thought bullet that incapacitated the rest of the Lost Light crew, leaving them unable to prevent him from activating a universal killswitch that would kill every Transformer that was constructed cold. Remain in Light 4 of 5: Arm the Lonely That included Brainstorm, who fell victim to its effects but recovered after Rodimus and Perceptor used half the Matrix to reverse the killswitch. Remain in Light 5 of 5: This Calamitous Life Upon returning to the Lost Light he visited Swerve's to try and find out if anyone had opened his briefcase while he was incapacitated The Sound of Breaking Glass before secreting himself away in his workshop with the Point One Percenter he had recovered from the Seething Moon. Remain in Light 5 of 5: This Calamitous Life
Brainstorm was on hand to greet Orion Pax and his crew after the Lost Light snatched their ship from certain doom. Dark Dawn: Dark Cybertron Chapter 1 Intending to venture into the Dead Universe, Pax consulted Brainstorm, who was able to use a cyberwraith to manufacture personal force fields to protect Pax and his party from the hostile nature of that reality. Black Metal: Dark Cybertron Chapter 2 When the Lost Light was later pulled off course, Brainstorm found the source of the problem—Metroplex's thumb pushing against the roof of shuttle bay 3. He talked Ultra Magnus into investigating where it was pointing them to. Winners & Losers: Dark Cybertron Chapter 3 That took them to a water world, where they soon discovered they were surrounded by Ammonites. Brainstorm joined Magnus and the others in commandeering the Rodpod to take the fight to the enemy, and they stumbled on the dormant Metroplex. Into the Abyss: Dark Cybertron Chapter 4

Acting on a hunch, Brainstorm took a sample of the water and found it was full of admium. They left the Rodpod in a drydock, but swiftly got lost in the city-bot's interior and ended back at the dry dock, where they were ambushed by an Ammonite who destroyed the Rodpod. No Exit: Dark Cybertron Chapter 6 They survived the explosion when Metroplex's interior rearranged itself on them, and a short time later encountered Nautica and Chromia. The Dead Are Not Enough: Dark Cybertron Chapter 7 As the Ammonites subsequently flooded in, Brainstorm was among those who opted to retreat to Metroplex's brain, where they met Windblade. Brainstorm helped hook Metroplex up to the Lost Light remotely, allowing the titan to quantum jump both himself and the ship to Cybertron. Burning Bright: Dark Cybertron Chapter 8 When Metroplex appeared to be losing the fight with the Necrotitan, Ultra Magnus suggested Brainstorm open the briefcase. It turned to to be unnecessary as an eleventh hour save by Megatron resulted in a victory, and Brainstorm high-fived Nautica as he cracked a situationally relevant joke. Finis Temporis: Dark Cybertron Chapter 9

Brainstorm later relaxed in Swerve's bar, though he was exceedingly cranky, which he put down to sparkache. The Becoming: Dark Cybertron Chapter 10 As billions of Ammonites descended on Cybertron as the finale to Shockwave's plan, Brainstorm was recruited by Bumblebee as part of a team to attack the scientist's lab. After they were teleported there by Skywarp, Brainstorm suddenly found he didn't feel well and had to watch as the other tackled Bludgeon. Just as they were losing the fight, the team who had ventured into the Dead Universe popped out of a portal in Brainstorm's chest and lent a hand. Black Planet: Dark Cybertron Chapter 11 With several members of said team unable to survive outside the Dead Universe, Brainstorm invited them back to his lab for treatment and Nightbeat suggested he might need to treat himself, as the portal was likely due to his exposure to the Dead Universe. With some encouragement from Rodimus, Brainstorm succeeded in making up a treatment for the injured parties. ...And the Damage Done: Dark Cybertron Finale

Brainstorm opted to rejoin the quest for the Knights after Shockwave's defeat, and spent a large amount of time with Nautica, even loading her wrench with extra features. slaughterhouse While the quantum mechanic returned from investigating the disappearance of several fuel rods, Brainstorm saw fit to punctuate her belated return by leaning gently on the fourth wall. The topic of conversation soon shifted to Rung's therapy session with the new <s>co-</s>captain, Megatron. World, Shut Your Mouth Part 1: Towards Peace

When Rodimus found what appeared to be his own corpse in a mysterious coffin, Brainstorm was called in, along with Chromedome, First Aid, Nautica, Nightbeat, and Skids, to help find out what was going on. Brainstorm's biggest contribution involved using his preemptively preemptive Early Early Warning System to determine that they were all in trouble, though not quite at the "Run for your life!" threshold yet. Then the Lost Light started winking out of existence and they were. Though Brainstorm managed to evacuate, he disappeared along with the rest of the original crew under mysterious circumstances. Twenty Plus One

The remaining crew then discovered the remains of a quantum duplicated Lost Light, which had been savagely attacked by the Decepticon Justice Division. Its Brainstorm's briefcase was found in a lift by Nautica and Nightbeat, slaughterhouse and Brainstorm's body was later found in his workshop during a search for his mass-displacement gun. As Nautica mourned, she revealed Brainstorm's face. In a surprise to everyone, Brainstorm had a mouth...and a Decepticon emblem painted on the interior of his detached faceplate. As Nautica attempted to deny it and Megatron stated Brainstorm was unlike the usual double agents the Decepticons recruited, Riptide assumed that this alternate evil Brainstorm drew the D.J.D. to the ship by deactivating Overlord's slow cell, making him detectable. It took Ravage to point out that if this Brainstorm was a traitor, so was the one on their Lost Light. After Megatron and the quantum duplicated Rewind deactivated the second ship's engines and returned the vanished Autobots to normal, Brainstorm attempted to find a seat in a crowded Swerve's. Joining Atomizer, he placed his briefcase on the table only to be reminded of Swerve's "No Briefcases" rule. Brainstorm calmly stated that he could do anything he liked as he opened the briefcase, causing everyone around him to collapse. slaughterhouse Part 2: The Road Not Taken
Both of Brainstorm's twin pistols attach to the front of his alt-mode's nosecone to extend it and augment it with two canard wings. As with all larger Headmaster toys, Brainstorm features both a cockpit suitable for his partner, Arcana, to sit in and an abbreviated Tech Specs bar graph inside his chest hidden under a hinged panel. When a compatible Headmaster head is plugged into the socket on Brainstorm's body, the bars will show three of that character's Tech Specs.
*In early planning stages, the Large Headmasters were to have differently styled heads that would be replaced by their more familiar heads during the Headmaster process. A commercial for Headmasters #1 featuring animation of Brainstorm and others is the only time these designs were used.
*The Headmasters appeared in a second commercial with much more sophisticated animation. In this entry, we see the Autobot Headmasters lined up in vehicle modes as their Nebulan partners run up into their cockpits and then launch into an attack.
*Additional footage of the Headmasters featured in the animated introduction to the first commercial for the Pretenders. As Brainstorm battles Mindwipe, the narration claims that after a series of defeats, the Autobots are required to up the ante by developing Pretender technology.
*In all three of these commercials, Brainstorm is colored in his Marvel Comics colors rather than his color scheme seen in "The Rebirth", with his dark green and orange being replaced with cyan and yellow.
*Brainstorm is a Christian! In the Headmasters cartoon episode "The Four-Million-Year-Old Veil of Mystery", when the Headmasters encounter a massacre on the planet Praum, he crosses himself.
Predacon is a fanatic who experiments in the combination of organic tissue and standard Cybertronian robotics. He believes that through this process, Transformers can become far more powerful... and Predacon certainly packs a lethal punch. Though most Cybertronians find this idea repugnant, he was able to amass a cadre of loyal, fanatical followers.

This group became big enough to be worrying to the Autobots, who even sent an agent deep undercover to keep an optic on them and hopefully even discover just where this biomechanical technology came from, which is one thing the boisterous and charismatic Predacon is remarkably silent about.
Two Mini-Con Powerlinx plugs were also added at the hubs of his turbine fans, as well as the parts that become his robot-mode shoulder-armor. He is one of only two Armada toys to be released with two Mini-Con partners (the other being Sideways); he came with Side Burn and Skid-Z.

:In an undocumented bit of extra play value, Predacon can attach energon stars to the outside of his legs (though the original Megatron toy cannot, as the corresponding part is too small on that version of the mold).

: Predacon was released in Japan as a "USA Edition" exclusively through ToysЯUs's web site.
A great battle between evil and good! Who will reach the cube?

Synopsis
Carter Newell descends further and further into insanity, intent on using the facsimile AllSpark to exterminate all Transformer life, beginning with Optimus Prime and his Autobots. Outside the Initiative base, the Autobots struggle in their battle against the Initiative-controlled Autobots and Decepticons; unable to fight to their fullest extent due to their unwillingness to hurt their friends, they are forced instead to subdue them, allowing Ratchet to cut them off from the controlling energies of the artificial AllSpark.

With the AllSpark entering meltdown due to Carter's misuse of it, Hank Kirkpatrick attempts to stop the madman, only to have Carter blast him with the AllSpark's energies, reducing him to a pile of smoking bones. This horrific sight prompts Ingrid to race to the isolation unit where the mysterious Transformer head held captive by Carter resides, agreeing to liberate the Transformer in order to stop Carter if he explains what is going on. The robot explains that he is a Seeker named Fortress, one of many left abandoned on Earth by The Fallen thousands of years beforehand. In 1929, a reckless contest between Fortress and another Seeker for information on the location of the Tomb of the Primes led to the young Carter Newell's parents being killed in a car crash, and Carter himself being crippled. Carter has hated the Transformers ever since, and has used his parents' wealth to build the Initiative for the goal of destroying them.

Exploiting the chaos of the battle, Soundwave is able to wrest control of Ravage back from the Initiative, and has him deploy the Microcons. Just as Carter is using the power of the AllSpark to inflict pain upon Prime and the Autobots through their very sparks, the tiny robots sneak up behind the human and form Reedman, grievously wounding him before they are destroyed by an AllSpark-powered blast. Believing the AllSpark will heal his wounds in time, Carter disconnects a portion of the mobile base and flees with the cube, only to be pursued by Optimus Prime, Buzzsaw (at Soundwave's command), and Fortress himself, who has been freed by Ingrid and has reconstituted his body from the remains of the abandoned mobile base. Prime is forced to propel Carter's escape vehicle off the road, plucking the cube from the wreckage and attempting to bring it under control by feeding it the energies of his own spark. Carter emerges from the rubble and is about to use the cube to destroy Prime, when he is killed by a cannon barrage from Buzzsaw. At that point, Fortress arrives and convinces Prime to give him the cube, teleporting away with it to some far-off corner of the cosmos, where it explodes harmlessly, taking no lives but Fortress's own.

In the aftermath of the battle, the Autobots and NEST arrest the surviving Initiative personnel and comb through the base's computers, but information on the full extent of Newell's organization and his operations remains elusive. Prime fears that everything Carter did could all happen again...as up in orbit, Soundwave completes his upload of the Initiative's databanks...

Errors
*Many Transformers given the wrong colors in this issue. Problems with the Initiative-controlled Transformers are noted below; others include a consistently murky yellow Ratchet, a green Mudflap and a red Skids in the first double page spread, then a green Mudflap and a blue Skids on the last page.

*When he appears in the last few pages of the issue, Buzzsaw seems to have taken on a helicopter alternate mode with no explanation.

Items of note
*As with the previous issue, the Initiative-controlled Transformers are difficult to identify: many of them have been redesigned by artist Carlos Magno into more monstrous forms, as he did with Reverb and Ransack earlier in the series, and the coloring is even worse this time around. Many names in the featured characters list are best guesses—except for Blazemaster, who is the only one named in the script (although his colors oscillate from solid blue to blue with tan accents). A breakdown:
**The blue tank-treaded robot seen in the first double page spread is almost certainly Tankor.
**Brawn is clearly identifiable in this spread also, despite being colored like his Generation 1 predecessor. He is colored entirely green in subsequent pages.
**A black and red stealth-plane Transformer can safely be presumed to be either Skystalker or Mindwipe; we've opted for the former.
**Far off in the distance is a small purple and red Transformer with what seem to be orange shoulder-mounted missile-launchers. He didn't appear in the last issue, but Sonar shows up with the same design in the later Rising Storm series.
**The large chaotic jumble of green that takes up a larger part of the page is Armorhide, now drawn based on his Revenge of the Fallen dune duggy toy, instead of the first movie toyline's truck body he was rendered with in the previous issue. Whoops! Although hard to discern in this issue, his identity would later be confirmed in Rising Storm #1.
**As for the blue one beside him, he's a new face that wasn't in the last issue, and is pretty much impossible to identify. He would go on to appear alongside the other Autobots freed from Initiative capture (Armorhide, Blazemaster and Brawn) in Rising Storm #1, where he was likewise unidentified, but now featured some red parts and a car-hood-chest, suggesting he might be Smokescreen, who did have a toy in the Revenge of the Fallen line... but was previously killed in The Reign of Starscream #3. Hrmn.
**The three robots attacking Jolt were colored entirely grey last issue, but two of them have managed to get some color in this one. The one who hasn't is at least immediately recognizable as the jet mold shared by Breakaway and Thrust, and since Breakaway died earlier in this series, we assume this to be Thrust.
**As for Jolt's other two attackers; one now has a splash of green but is otherwise unidentifiable. While not visible in this issue, he was shown with a hook in place of his right hand last issue that makes us think he's Lockdown (who should have some green parts on him). The final 'bot, an unidentifiable jet, is now colored red. The only red 'plane in the Revenge of the Fallen toyline is Divebomb, but this guy looks too sleek to be a biplane.

:Holomatter is a technology from the IDW portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Holomatter is a solid-light projection technology, used by Autobots operating on alien worlds. Holomatter projectors can create projected facsimiles of native species which are too small or fleshy for the Autobots to mimic with their mechanical altmodes. The avatar isn't just a friendly image to fool human beings; it's also the Autobot equivalent of a remotely operated vehicle, allowing Autobots to go places and perform actions that would otherwise be prevented by their size and the need to camouflage their true identities. Having an avatar in a location is like the Autobot being there himself. An avatar can function a considerable distance away from the controlling Autobot, even when separated by solid walls.

The avatar is created and maintained by "holomatter generators". They can cause the avatar to blink into sudden existence with no warning. Holomatter avatars can be intangible, or as solid as a real object. Much like Pretender shells before them, holomatter avatars carry a strong connection to the consciousness of its generating Autobot. Damage to the avatar can cause severe impairment to the controlling Autobot if their consciousness is not withdrawn in time. Holomatter disguises are also limited by their operator's understanding of the lifeform they mimic.

Fiction
IDW Generation 1 continuity
All the Autobots operating covertly on Earth used holomatter avatars to act as their vehicle-mode drivers. Infiltration issue 1 Through a lack of understanding of humans, the holomatter avatars of the Autobots wore a fixed smile which their human friends found creepy, and the male Autobots Bumblebee and Sunstreaker had female avatars. Infiltration issue 3

Ratchet was able to deliver a massive electrical surge at very close range through his holomatter avatar. This was powerful enough to stun Runabout, though at the cost of burning out Ratchet's holomatter generators. Infiltration issue 2

After Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, Hunter gave the Autobots a "crash course in Earth culture"; Jazz noted that the Autobots never realized that humans found the smiles of their avatars disturbing. After this, the Autobots' holomatter avatars became much more expressive. Escalation issue 1 Holomatter could be detected by devices called "holomatter readers", which the Machination possessed. Escalation issue 4 Ironhide's avatar was capable of lifting Verity Carlo and Jimmy Pink at the same time, and he could increase the size of his avatar to over 9' (3m) tall so as to manhandle the pair through a hole in the ceiling. Escalation issue 6

Streetwise and Groove used their holomatter avatars to trick Sandra into coming with them, to help in their investigation of Spike. Police Action Part 2: Only Forward

Ratchet used this technology to distract the traitorous Pharma during their fight, and used it to retrieve the cure to the Red Rust virus when Pharma dropped it off Delphi's roof. How Ratchet Got His Hands Back

Rung and Brainstorm modified the holomatter avatars of the Lost Light crew to better reflect their personalities. The avatars were used during a trip to Hedonia to avoid annoying some of the more mech-unfriendly locals. Cybertronian Homesick Blues

When Megatron stripped the spark out of every Transformer on Cybertron, he needed somewhere to put them. The spark containment unit is built into his Grand Mal for just that purpose, and now holds almost the entire population of the planet, save Megatron, his generals and a few lowly Maximals.

Fiction
Beast Machines cartoon
Megatron built the containment unit to hold the sparks he took from Cybertron's population. There they stayed, hidden away, until Megatron was ready for his big moment—his grand ascension. As a horrified Optimus Primal watched, Megatron began plucking sparks from the containment unit and consuming them. The feast didn't last long, as Nightscream used his sonic scream on Megatron's spark, depolarizing it and releasing the sparks which returned to the containment unit. Sparkwar Pt. III: The Siege

After the Maximals took control of the giant head, prevailing opinion was that they should use the sparks in the chamber to create reinforcements, Primal refused on the basis it would endanger the sparks. The containment unit therefore remained sealed while the Vehicons assaulted the head. As the ship began to crash, Rattrap used the last of the energy to erect a stasis field around the containment unit, enabling it to survive the subsequent impact. Endgame Pt. I: The Downward Spiral As the other Maximals prepared for the oncoming Vehicon assault, Optimus meditated near the containment unit and contacted the Oracle. Though the Maximals fought bravely, they were defeated and their sparks taken, bar Optimus who was driven back to the containment unit. Endgame Pt. II: When Legends Fall

He was confronted by Megatron, who added the other Maximals' sparks to the containment unit. After Optimus destroyed the Diagnostic Drones in the process of opening the spark chamber, Megatron attacked him. While the pair were busy having a city-spanning fight, more Diagnostic Drones set about repairing the damage to the control panel. They eventually finished and opened the unit, allowing the sparks to flood out so Megatron could absorb them. Endgame Pt. III: Seeds of the Future
