Metroplex

:Metroplex is an Autobot city-bot from the Generation 1 continuity family. In city mode, he is also known as Scramble City.

Metroplex’s poor, slow, and infrequent efforts to support his brave comrades and forward the Autobot cause are never enough. Sure, he's the Autobots' ultimate weapon, their greatest and final defense. Yes, he's a gigantic, towering warrior, capable of channeling awesome energies. Strong beyond belief, versatile, clever, brave and self-sacrificing, Metroplex is willing to give everything he has to the Autobot cause and defend it to his last astroseconds of life. Despite all this he’s wracked to the core of his being with the belief that he could and should be doing more. It’s a self-deprecating attitude that stuns many of his fellow Autobots, most of whom take immeasurable comfort in his very existence and the knowledge that regardless of what evil comes, Metroplex is out there to back them up.

This great modesty about his power and achievements together with a boundless patience necessitated by his size and alternate mode are apparent to anyone who pierces his normally less than talkative demeanor, and in the optics of many, these traits only raise his already high standing.

Metroplex’s might is equaled only by the gargantuan Decepticon, Trypticon, his long-standing nemesis. He has three "normal"-sized components: Six-Gun, Slammer and Scamper, to help patrol and defend his territory. The extent of that territory is sometimes unclear; sometimes Metroplex is an independent Autobot base, and other times he's part of (or all of) Autobot City.

By the year 2005, Metroplex had been installed as a sub-section of the larger Autobot City, now the main base of operations for the Autobots on Earth. During the Decepticons' attack on the city, the transforming cog which allowed Metroplex to transform to robot mode was destroyed, preventing him from participating in the battle, although he was manually converted to battle station mode by the Autobots inhabiting him. The Transformers: The Movie

Following the defeat of Unicron and the Autobots' reclamation of Cybertron, Perceptor built a new transforming cog for Metroplex, and entrusted its delivery to Blurr and Wheelie. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1 While they were busy suffering numerous setbacks (including nearly getting killed by Galvatron and being stranded on Jupiter's moon Io), the immobile Metroplex was attacked by the Decepticons' new mobile battle station, Trypticon, who had been created expressly to serve as Metroplex's opposite number. Metroplex was again manually transformed to battle station mode by his inhabitants in hopes of mounting some form of a defence, but things were not looking hopeful. At the height of the battle, Blurr and Wheelie was safely brought to Earth by Sky Lynx, and quickly handed the transforming cog off to Pipes to install. Pipes carried out the task with all due haste, and Metroplex promptly transformed to robot mode, thrashed Trypticon, and hurled him into the ocean. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5
Although the Autobots figured this to be the end of Trypticon, in actuality, the saurian city survived and started stealing national monuments to pay off Octane's debt to Abdul Fakkadi. When dinosaur transform static was found at the crime scene, Metroplex and his subordinates questioned all the Autobots with dinosaur electrons in their circuits, but when Trypticon was finally revealed to be the culrpit, Metroplex battled him in Russia over the Kremlin. Unfortunately, Metroplex was then left holding the building, and the Soviets blamed the Autobots for the thefts and expelled them from the country. Fakkadi, however, summoned the Autobots to his country of Carbombya to help oust the Decepticons that had taken over, and Metroplex delivered another sound defeat to Trypticon, tossing him into the ocean yet again and returning the stolen buildings to their rightful place. Thief in the Night
As part of his deal with Unicron to ensure their mutual resurrection, the ghost of Starscream was charged with stealing Metroplex's eyes in order to restore Unicron's sight. Possessing Scourge, Starscream invaded Metroplex and started removing the giant's optics, only to wind up breaking the first one when he was caught off-guard by Spike and Bumblebee. Just as he was successfully removing the second eye, Metroplex detected the presence of intruders within his brain vault and awoke. Scourge came crashing out of Metroplex just as he transformed to robot mode, and beat a hasty retreat as the giant discovered that he was blind and went into a maddened rage, firing upon all the Transformers in the vicinity. Metroplex landed a shot on Powerglide before his rampage was cut short by the detonation of a photon charge Scourge had placed in his head, and he fell unconscious, transforming back into city mode. After the villains' plan was foiled, new eyes were constructed for Metroplex. Ghost in the Machine
After coming under attack from a Eurythman sonic weapon, Carnage in C-Minor, transforming cog troubles returned to plague Metroplex when Swindle stole the component right out from under First Aid's nose. With Metroplex trapped in city mode, the Autobots retaliated by stealing Trypticon's cog and using it as a replacement; the Decepticons proceeded to use Metroplex's cog in place of Trypticon's, but the incompatibility of the cogs in each of the giant robots led to an unsteady battle with both combatants partially transforming back and forth constantly. First Aid proceeded to enter Metroplex's body during the fight and aligned the cog properly, allowing Metroplex to fully transform and, yet again, fling Trypticon into a body of water. The Ultimate Weapon
Metroplex was constructed in the late 1980s as part of the Autobots' "Scramble City" initiative to develop a powerful battle station. During the early stages of the project, however, when the Autobots were conducting an outdoor test of the unfinished city's transformation to mobile fortress mode, Astrotrain and Reflector were able to monitor the process. The information they acquired allowed Megatron to decipher whether or not Metroplex would be able to stand up to Trypticon. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 3|Fight!
Trypticon was ultimately completed before Metroplex, and was successfully activated on a small island. The Autobots went into action to save the island and stop the giant, but without a city-bot of their own, they had to resort to some cunning: Perceptor magnified a hologram of Metroplex projected by Hound, creating a huge image of the giant Autobot that Trypticon charged at and passed through, crashing into the ocean below. {{storylink|Fight! To complete the Scramble City project, the Autobots moved their operation to a secret underground cavern, but the Decepticons' spy cassettes located the subterranean base, and an all-out Decepticon attack was initiated. Menasor and Bruticus had Superion outnumbered, but the heroic combiner was able to hold the line long enough until Metroplex's construction was finally completed.
On a bright and sunny day in the year 2010, the Autobots invited a group of human families to come take a tour of Metroplex. They were all very impressed and everything was going great... until Trypticon attacked. Preoccupied with keeping everyone inside him from dying, Metroplex was left to take all of Trypticon's attacks on the chin, including his Dual Plasma Cannons and Dino-Head Attack. With Scamper quickly taken out by Full-Tilt, it looked as though Metroplex would be felled by a blast from the Brunt tank.

Luckily, Ultra Magnus deployed Six-Gun just in time. Six-Gun took out Full-Tilt and then proceeded to turn the Brunt tank around on Trypticon, blasting the Decepticon with his own drone. The blast destroyed Trypticon's Head Controls, forcing Galvatron to call a retreat. In 2011, one year after the curing of the Hate Plague, the Decepticons launched a major offensive to take control of Cybertron. To prevent Autobot reinforcements reaching the planet, a large garrison of Decepticon troops were deployed to keep the Autobots on Earth occupied. As the battle moved to the vicinity of Autobot City, Metroplex flew into action and aided his comrades by blasting the Constructicons out of the sky. He then transformed into battle station mode and transported the Trainbots back to the city itself, where they took the space bridge to aid their allies on Cybertron. Four Warriors Come out of the Sky As the battle to control Cybertron continued to rage, Metroplex was among the Autobots deployed to help search Earth for the missing Matrix of Leadership. Birth of the Fantastic Double Prime

Observing Trypticon making his way towards an oil field, Ultra Magnus ordered Metroplex into action. The two city-bots engaged in another round of their endless dance, but Metroplex soon discovered that he had been lured into a trap when the Decepticons' newest invention, the Madmachine, burrowed its way out of the sand nearby. An electromagnetic blast from the Madmachine sent Metroplex's systems into chaos, and he was forced to retreat. The Great Cassette Operation Soon after, Metroplex joined the Autobot Headmasters in traveling to Britain and New York to investigate attacks by a mysterious blackmailer. {{storylink|Terror! A little later, the Technobots launched from Metroplex to back up a contingent of Autobots on Mars, but found their way barred by Trypticon. Metroplex immediately went into action against his perennial foe and kicked him into a mountainside, but then he had to deal with Sixshot. {{storylink|Explosion on Mars!!

When the Autobots and Decepticons left Earth to go on an interplanetary energy quest, Metroplex (logically enough) did not go with them, and so disappeared off the radar for a while. When they returned to Earth, Sixshot launched an attack on Autobot City, leading to a violent battle between him and Ultra Magnus. Metroplex attempted to aid his commander, but was kept busy by Trypticon, and so, Ultra Magnus died by Sixshot's hand. After the Autobot Headmasters disposed of Sixshot, funeral arrangements were made for Magnus, and Metroplex requested that rather than launch his body into space, the Autobots should bury Ultra Magnus on Earth to symbolize the great love he had for the planet. Ultra Magnus Dies!!

Decepticon attacks only intensified in the wake of Magnus's death, and Metroplex, seeking revenge for the death of his commander, insisted that he be allowed to join in the fight. Fortress and the Autobot Headmasters encouraged him to remain at Autobot City, pointing out that his databanks contained all their collected information and that he was too valuable to lose, but reports began pouring in from different Autobot installations that only seemed to prove how necessary Metroplex entering the fray was. Fortress explained that all available Autobots had come to help, and Metroplex grudgingly agreed to stand down, with one condition: when Sixshot showed his face, he would be Metroplex's to deal with. This time came quite soon, as Metroplex accompanied the Autobot Headmasters to Alaska and engaged Sixshot in an aerial battle while the Headmasters dealt with Galvatron. When the young warriors destroyed the Decepticon leader with the power of their Head Formation, Sixshot retreated, depriving Metroplex of his revenge. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg

It wasn't long before Metroplex got another shot at Sixshot when he and Trypticon attacked Autobot City again. Metroplex dealt with Trypticon quickly and focused his fury on Sixshot, but the revenge-hungry Autobot was mistaken in his belief that Trypticon had been defeated. As the saurian titan leapt at Metroplex from behind, Spike Witwicky moved into the open to shout a warning to the giant Autobot, and was hit by a stray laser blast. Seconds later, the Trainbots arrived to help Metroplex overpower Trypticon and send him packing, but Spike had been grievously wounded by the blast and had to be taken to Athenia for medical attention. I Risk My Life for Earth

When the Headmasters departed Earth to follow the Decepticons to planet Master, Metroplex was left in command on the Autobots on Earth. Some time later, just as the Headmasters were returning to Earth, Decepticons began springing up all over Earth, and Metroplex contacted the approaching Headmasters to let them know of the sudden change in the situation. He greeted them when they arrived on the planet, updated them, and was commended for the good job he had done in their absence. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 1) Metroplex continued to help gather data on the Decepticons' activities on Earth, which involved raising mysterious "Death Towers" at strategic points around the globe, helping out where he could. After supervising the transportation of humans injured in a Decepticon attack, Metroplex sped to Egypt to aid Fortress Maximus after he was wounded battling Scorponok. Finally, Metroplex participated in the colossal climactic battle between the entire Autobot and Decepticon armies at the North Pole, which culminated in the Decepticons' defeat, and the withdrawal of all Transformers from Earth. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 2)
Metroplex is the largest Autobot on record at just under 700 feet in height. Entirely too large to wander Earth freely, Metroplex accepted without complaint the role he was assigned: that of the "living core" of Autobot City. Built into the very fabric of the city upon its creation in 2003, Metroplex lay dormant beneath its surface, endowing it with the ability to transform from city mode into a heavily-armed battle station.

In 2008, when the Quintessons invaded and took control of Autobot City as a part of a complex, multi-pronged plan to take over Cybertron, only a few Autobots were able to avoid capture. Rodimus Prime, temporarily reverted back to Hot Rod, was one of the lucky few, and managed to activate Metroplex. The towering Autobot tore his way out from beneath the city and, already in a bad mood over being so rudely awakened, immediately began smashing and blasting the Quintessons that started attacking him. The fight was distinctly one-sided, and before long, Metroplex had successfully driven the invading aliens off. Alas, as Autobot City was largely gutted when Metroplex emerged, it was something of a pyrrhic victory for the Autobots. Space Pirates!
Metroplex was charged with protecting an unidentified object of great value on the planet Salvvatan VIII. He remained hidden in plain sight in alternate mode, posing as merely another section of a sprawling mechanical complex on the planet's surface. His proximity to Orvus Base, the Autobot research facility orbiting Salvvatan VI, seems to be too convenient to be a coincidence, but any direct connection between Orvus Base and Metroplex or whatever he was guarding was unknown.

Metroplex's cover was compromised when Orvus Base was attacked by the devastatingly powerful Decepticon known as Sixshot. Nearly the entire crew was wiped out, except for six Throttlebots who escaped to Salvvatan VIII, with Sixshot hot on their heels. Their running battle at the complex led the combatants to Metroplex's hiding spot, and a sharp turn sent Rollbar and Sixshot through Metroplex's outermost wall. His defensive perimeter breached, Metroplex transformed to robot mode, taking the opportunity to squash Sixshot under his boot in the process. With his position compromised, Metroplex's first priority was immediate relocation of himself and, presumably, the object he protected. He directed the Throttlebots to where they could find an escape shuttle and medical supplies before transforming into a space-faring mode and rocketing out into the cosmos. Spotlight: Metroplex
Metroplex returned to Cybertron, where he served as a base of operations for the ancient Autobot Alpha Trion while he began his endeavours to restore the damaged planet to habitability. Despite his prodigious strength and size, Metroplex was of little use in battle against the Insecticon swarm that had overrun Cybertron (the swarm was simply too great in size, and would eat their way inside his systems before he could destroy them all), so instead, Alpha Trion resurrected the deceased Ironhide to carry out the task. Once Ironhide had reduced the swarm's numbers to a mere two hundred, Alpha Trion had Metroplex transform to robot mode and crush the remaining Insecticons beneath his massive palms. Subsequently, Alpha Trion and Metroplex left Cybertron for parts unknown, off to put into motion the next move in the great, enigmatic game Alpha Trion was playing. Any Old Iron
Generation 1
*Metroplex (Autobot City, 1986/2008)
**Japanese ID number: C-70
**Accessories: Scamper, Scamper's arms/cannons (x2), Scamper's small laser pistol, Slammer, Slammer's turret, Sixgun's body/tower, Sixgun's chestplate/tower top 2 red cannons/Sixgun's legs, 2 black cannons/Sixgun's arms, Sixgun's laser pistol, double-barreled cannon, rear tower, shoulder antenna, 2 fists, 2 kneecaps, 3 missiles

: Metroplex transforms from a large robot to a multi-leveled "city" mainly for use with the smaller Generation 1 toys. This mode includes a service bay with launching mechanism, a helipad, and "parking" for four vehicles in whatever his legs fold out to be. He also has a third mobile battle station mode; a more compact wheeled form that incorporates his many weapons. Additionally, his weapons are all moulded with universal-sized pegs that allow them to attached in several different configurations and locations (for example, in the otherwise-pointless holes in his kneecaps in city mode). Metroplex came with Six-Gun, Slammer, and Scamper; the first two formed various parts of Metroplex's alternate modes. Metroplex's kneecaps also connect in various places in slots on his legs, both in mobile mode, and in city mode on the opposite side (near the knee joint).

:Metroplex was apparently designed as part of the aborted Diaclone line, Jizai Gattai ("Free Combination"), given the high degree of interactivity he has with other toys confirmed as part of it—namely, the Aerialbots, Stunticons, Protectobots and Combaticons. Each of the smaller "limb" robot from these four groups (and those that came after using their basic design, like the Technobots, Terrorcons and Seacons) can plug into ports in Metroplex's shoulders and knees in robot mode, while the base modes of the four leaders—Silverbolt, Hot Spot, Motormaster, and Onslaught—can connect to him in city mode. While the former feature was included in the Hasbro instructions, the latter was omitted. The peg-size of Metroplex's weapons also allows them to be wielded by the leaders and super-robots these teams create.

: As a third-year piece, Metroplex was one of several items to undergo "materials changing". Initial versions of Metroplex used rubber tires, and the fronts of his upper legs were fully-chromed silver. After a time, though, the tires were replaced with single-piece hard-plastic tires, and his legs changed to white plastic with a silver factory-applied sticker at the top. However, the plastic tire version also possessed a waist reinforced with two screw points instead of one, in an effort to prevent Metroplex literally snapping in half as so many of the original versions did due to a weak spot on the waist.

: Metroplex suffers from a large number of weak and breakable points. Apart from the aforementioned waist, the launcher inside his chest, the peg on his back, his extendable shoulder antenna, Scamper's shoulder hinges and Scamper's arm pegs are all very fragile and break or fail in various ways.

: This mold was also used to make Metrotitan, with some retooling for ramps compatible with the various Micromaster/Micro Transformer bases.

:In September 2008, Metroplex was reissued in Japan in Takara's Encore line. The Encore version also has the chrome upper legs and rubber wheels of the initial releases.

:A snap-together model kit of Metroplex was available as part of the fifth wave of Kabaya's Transformers Gum candy toy series. A much-shrunken version of the original Metroplex toy, the kit can only transform into battle station mode, and does not come with any of Metroplex's partners, but does retain some of the features of the larger figure, such the opening garage door and flip-down missile rack. Moulded from black, red and grey plastic, Metroplex has stickers for detail rather than paint operations, and came with a stick of gum.
Transformers Ramune
* Metroflex (1986)

: While no figure of Metroplex was released by Hasbro as part of their 1987 Decoy promotion, a soft rubber figure crafted in his image was released as part of the second series of wave of figures released by Kabaya exclusively in Japan as part of the Transformers Ramune line. Like the other figures in this series, Metroplex was sold in a blindpacked box and was available in red, blue and yellow colors. Unusually, the figure was based more upon preproduction artwork for the Metroplex toy than on the character's finalized appearance, lacking the distinctive shoulder and "ear" antennae that give Metroplex his unique silhouette and instead sporting an over-the-shoulder double-barreled cannon.

Forms Robo
* Metroflex (1987)

: Metroplex was also part of the small Forms Robo collection of larger "Decoy"-style figures, with this version of the character standing at around twice the height of a regular Decoy. Like the other figures in this wave, Metroplex was packaged in an individual baggie and was available in red, blue, green and yellow versions.

:The large vinyl figure of Metroplex was also avaialble in a "VS" figurine set, along with a Decepticon insignia badge, a water pistol and two randomly-packed peach-colored Autobot Decoys.
Collegeville Costumes
* Metroplex Halloween costume (1986)

:Given the small number of Transformers costumes produced by Collegeville Costumes, it was perhaps an odd choice to base one on a comparatively lesser-known character like Metroplex. Nonetheless, this two-piece costume adhered to the crappy time-worn tradition of consisting of a sculpted thin plastic mask held over the wearer's face with elastic, and a smock with a picture of Metroplex and his name on it.

* Metroplex mask (1986)

: Collegeville evidently liked Metroplex, as they also immortalized him in their line of Transformers masks. Made from flat styrofoam, the mask featured a hinge that allowed the wearer to lift it up and down, transforming from kid to robot in the blink of an eye!
Super Collection Figure
* Metroflex (2001)

: Metroplex was the "Build-A-Figure" in fourth wave of Takara's Super Collection Figure line of non-transformable PVC figurines. Available in eight out of every ten cases, Metroplex was divided into six parts, each one packaged mostly with one of the silver metallic "pewter" versions of the other six figurines in the line. His head and guns came with Ultra Magnus, his body with Arcee and Daniel, his left arm with Optimus Prime, his right arm with Megatron, his left leg with Thundercracker and his right leg with Rodimus Prime. Metroplex's parts were available in two versions, at an equal ratio: full-color and clear plastic, making two versions of the figure to collect.

Heroes of Cybertron
*Metroplex (2003)

:Super Collection Figure Metroplex was later made available as part of Heroes of Cybertron line, again packaged as a "Build-A-Figure" for the line's fifth wave. As the Heroes of Cybertron figures did not feature variants and were not blindpacked, it was a lot easier to assemble a Metroplex figure; the head and guns came with Optimus Prime, his body with Omega Supreme, his left arm with Devastator, his right arm with Megatron and Laserbeak, his left leg with Starscream and his right leg with Ratchet.

:Like all of the initial releases of the Heroes of Cybertron line, Metroplex's parts were cast in a transparent plastic with the colour based upon their faction (blue in Metroplex's case). He was almost completely painted, leaving his eyes and the back of his head unpainted for a light-piping effect.
His modular design allows his parts to be mixed and matched with those of any other MyClone figure.
Notes
*Metroplex's relationship to Autobot City in The Transformers: The Movie and the cartoon series is ill-defined at best. He is not actually mentioned by name in the movie, while Five Faces of Darkness uses the terms "Autobot City" and "Metroplex" interchangeably, suggesting they are the same thing. The confusion seems to originate with the design history behind Autobot City: designer Floro Dery has described how he created his own concept for the city, but was then instructed to redesign it, adding elements of the Metroplex toy (evidenced in the film itself by the city's shift from orange to white as it transforms and the appearance of a turret that is quite blatantly Slammer). The series would very rarely show Metroplex and Autobot City onscreen at the same time, using only one or the other as the episode demanded; the closest it would usually come to unifying the two would be to show the occasional leftover orange building remaining at Metroplex's feet when he transforms to robot mode. The episode "Thief in the Night" offered the best answer to the conundrum, by clearly presenting Metroplex to be a smaller sub-section of the city (see right).
*Scramble City features a different character model for Metroplex compared to the one used for his appearances in the Generation 1 cartoon. The Scramble City model is more toy-accurate, featuring individual eyes, more robo-wrinkles and "stubble."
*"Fortress Maximus" was likely a considered name for Metroplex. The Marvel comic adaptation of the 1986 Movie even refers to Autobot City as "Fortress Maximus" in a caption.
*The Japanese book Transformers Generations contains concept art for an unmade Action Master version of Metroplex.
*In Transformers The Game, the video game tie-in for the 2007 movie, a suburban mall was called the Metroplex Mall as an homage to the character.
*Unusually for the G1 cartoon, Metroplex retains his red optics. This is in contrast to the cartoon's typical practice of colouring Autobot optics blue and Decepticon optics red.
* No instructions show this, but in a bizarre case of convergent engineering, Grandus in transport mode can combine with Metroplex in transport mode via the pegs on the former's shoulders, and the fist holes on the latter. Jizai Gattai indeed.
* The tower formed with Slammer boasts a peak that is very similar to the Scramble City connection pieces sported by all smaller limb pieces, but is too large to be used in the same manner.
*Metroplex is depected with (presumably) decepticon prisioners shackled to the insides of his legs, then never again.
:Razorclaw is a former Maximal from an alternate Beast Wars who became a Minion of Unicron in the Universe war.

Know that he is Razorclaw, that his reality is not yours, and while he may resemble Tigerhawk, Razorclaw is not he! This alternate version of Tigerhawk was corrupted by the Vok, and he killed his universe's Megatron. Unicron, his body ruined and trapped between dimensions, abducted Razorclaw to be his fourth and final general.

Razorclaw has served his new master well, pillaging star systems with all of his Vok-enhanced elemental powers. These powers are further fueled by Razorclaw's short temper and deadly rage. The other generals tread lightly in his presence, as they are afraid that they may randomly enrage him. And, well, when you're led by a godlike warrior who can summon earthquakes, electrical storms, and tsunamis, you really don't want to get on his bad side. Friend and foe fear his arsenal of weaponry, which includes titanium-reinforced claws and a paralyzing ion diminisher. All these and more are utilized by a Vok-enhanced intelligence that knows few equals.

He harbors a special hatred for Optimus Primal, his former commander, whose ideals represent everything that Razorclaw has left behind. Other than his short temper, his only real weakness is his binary spark. It consists of the sparks of his home universe's Airazor and Tigatron, and their noble influence can confuse Razorclaw in times of stress. Time will tell if this influence can push itself fully to the surface.
On an alternate Cybertron, that universe's Optimus Primal was leading the Autobots Snarl, Silverbolt, and Striker against Razorclaw, Reptillion sic, Obsidian, Tankor, and Blackarachnia in the most intense day of fighting that year. Just as the combatants were really beating the slag out of each other, they were interrupted by a mysterious spaceship that swooped down, sucked the Decepticons up on beams of light, and flew away. None of the combatants realized that it was taking its captives to Unicron for use in a massive army. Universe CD-ROM

After Unicron poached the Vok-corrupted Razorclaw from his home dimension, he put him in charge of his other three generals: Reptilion, Tankor, and Obsidian. He immediately put his elemental powers to use, pillaging nearby star systems to glorify his fallen master.

But Unicron required something more. The Chaos Bringer needed to feed off the sparks of fallen Transformers to fully regain his strength. To these purposes, Razorclaw oversaw the Cauldron, along with the other generals. Here, Transformers from across the multiverse were abducted into this sub-Unicron dimension, where they fought each other gladiator-style inside an arena. When one Transformer fell, its extinguished spark was consumed by Unicron, bringing him ever-closer to complete reactivation.

This continued for a time, until one particular party of multidimensional abductees was paraded before him. One of its members, the Maximal Silverbolt, recognized him as Tigerhawk. Razorclaw confirmed the familiarity and explained who he was and why they were here. Abduction

While other members of that party, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, were forced to battle in the arena, Razorclaw spotted an intruder in their midsts. Optimus Primal, plucked from death by Primus Himself! Razorclaw tackled the resurrected gorilla, laughing. Was this the best opponent Primus could muster? Though Primal mistook him for Tigerhawk at first, Razorclaw quickly corrected him. After working himself free, Primal grabbed the energy weapons that Sideswipe and Sunstreaker had been given and used them against the general. This only angered Razorclaw, but unfortunately for him, his Vok-powered attacks were merely fuel for Primal's body, and after a few more attacks, Razorclaw was temporarily subdued.

All of the prisoners contained within the Cauldron were released, and though Razorclaw and his lieutenants pursued them, Primal led nearly all of them to safety. Only Blackarachnia and Shadow Striker stayed behind, seduced by Unicron's influence. Escape (issue)

An undetermined time later, Razorclaw was a combatant during the final battle between the Children of Primus and the Minions of Unicron within the Chaos-Bringer's body. Razorclaw flew through the skies, where he blew up Gunbarrel (apparently) and another Mini-Con. This battle ended prematurely as Unicron himself vanished beneath them, somehow due to the Unicron Singularity. Optimus Primal and his warriors were able to escape through a dimensional portal to their home dimensions, but Razorclaw's ultimate fate is unknown. Revelations Part 2
:Razorclaw is a dark gray and purple redeco and slight retool of Tigerhawk, transforming into a winged mechanical/organic tiger with a bird-helmeted "attack mode. In attack mode, he is armed with "feather" missiles very similar to the Fuzor Silverbolt's, with spring-loaded switches to flip the wings forward, and flip-out missile launchers which activate when a lever on Razorclaw's back is pulled (which also moves the wings). A bird helmet that is usually hidden mostly behind the tiger head is deployed in this mode. (The normal beast mode points these missiles backwards and uses the normal tiger head.) Under his beast head is a small cockpit with an empty pilot's chair, a vestigial remnant of his aborted "third mode."

: Razorclaw's hind leg talons are also spring-loaded to snap closed when the palms are depressed. His beast mode tiger head has an articulated jaw and an articulated tongue! The flip-out missile launchers can be removed and pegged into the top and bottom of Razorclaw's left fist pegholes.

:His feather-missile launcher mechanisms were slightly retooled from the original version of the toy. Though his toy is a Decepticon by allegiance, it keeps its sculpted Maximal logo.
Ultra Magnus
:Ultra Magnus is an Autobot from the Energon portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Battle-hardened veteran Ultra Magnus is a wise and powerful leader. His natural effectiveness as a leader is enhanced by the constant counsel of his binary-bonded Mini-Con partner Knock Out. As a leader, he prefers to concentrate on the here-and-now, and has little patience for mystical mumbo-jumbo.

Fiction
Force of Habit
After serving with distinction in the Armada War and the Powerlinx Battles, Ultra Magnus was given command of the half-finished Autobot flagship Iron Hope during the Unicron Singularity crisis. Magnus sent the Eclipse, the Valiant, the Azusa, the Spanner, the DieCast, and the Longbow to search the galaxy for ancient Autobot colony worlds. While en route to the Delta Crateris system, he received a distress signal from Longrack, the Spanners commander. Over Ironhide's objections, he maintained their course. A second call for aid was also denied, as the Iron Hope had come under Decepticon attack. After ordering his troops to their battle stations, Magnus leapt into battle against the raiders himself. Force of Habit

: Ultra Magnus is a redeco of Overload from Armada, transforming into a weapons trailer/aircraft launcher with spring-loaded missiles. His robot-mode shoulders have flip-open panels to reveal non-firing missile racks. He came with Knock Out, who forms the robot mode's head and central torso, and activates electronic sounds when he is plugged into the robot mode's chest socket. Ultra Magnus also came with a redeco of the Space Mini-Con Team. He has a third "weapon mode" that can plug onto the back of the Armada Optimus Prime super-robot mode, or the Prime trailer's "base" mode.

: The toy was a last-minute "eleventh hour" redeco, along with Rapid Run and Treadbolt. As such, their packaging photography had to be completed before properly-painted samples could be obtained, so the box-back photos use the original decos; Magnus' box also shows the original Street Speed Team rather than the Space Team.

: Magnus, Rapid Run and Treadbolt were all produced in smaller numbers than the rest of the normal retail Energon line, and were only available in the initial shipments. However, while Rapid Run and Treadbolt were fairly easy to acquire, Magnus' shipment saw a very limited release, quickly replaced with the second assortment in the US, making him hard to come by. Magnus later showed up in much larger numbers in Australia, Canada and some European markets; in the United Kingdom in particular, he actually shelfwarmed so badly that he could be found well into 2006. He was made available in Japan through e-Hobby with the box altered via a black and white sticker, reflecting the Space Team's addition. The back of the European release's box was further corrected, as the Mini-Cons shown were changed along when more languages were added.

: This mold was retooled to make Universe Sentinel Maximus.
Notes
* Magnus was originally going to be packed with a new-characters redeco of the Street Speed Mini-Con Team (Brakedown, Clocker and Override), but were changed towards the last minute. Popular fan-theory posits that this was due to their (intentional) resemblance to the Super Stunt Team, but if that were the case, it seems that it would have been a lot easier on Hasbro's part to simply stick with the intended molds and change their colors rather than go through the process of changing the molds themselves. Exactly why the change to the Space Team was made has yet to be determined, especially given Magnus' inability to hold their combined form. Several samples with the cars were produced and have made it out into the secondary market.

* He's not an Optimus Prime redeco. That should count for something.

* His animated model is far more articulated and less blocky than the toy.

Instead of regular human facial features, some Transformers have what looks like a plate affixed to their lower jaw, usually covering up to their nose. While no official name exists for these, they are usually called mouthplates ' or faceplates (despite a 'regular' face once being described as a faceplate in the TV series). Two of the most famous examples are those of Generation 1's Optimus Prime and Soundwave. Sufferers of Primus apotheosis often affix themselves with unnecessary faceplates to better emulate their idol.

In earlier series, a Transformer's mouthplate moved when they spoke, as if there were a working jaw underneath. Sometimes this is proven when a character is shown without a mouthplate when they ordinarily possess one. This is especially prevalent in comics. In Victory, Robots in Disguise and the Unicron Trilogy, however, it remains static.
Fiction/Toylines
Generation 1
Optimus Prime featured a prominent mouthplate in both cartoon and toy form (as do all other G1-based toyline versions). The 20th Anniversary figure featured a mouthplate that was movable via a button on the back of his head that slightly lowered the spring-supported mouthplate to recreate the talking action seen in the cartoons.

Soundwave had a similar mouthplate, but no apparent nose (whether any of his assumed face is visible or not is debatable, considering how visor-esque his eyes are). Like Optimus, both his cartoon and toy form had the mask. No toys have yet been made with a moving mask feature.

Wheeljack's mouthplate was unique in that it was fixed, even in the cartoon. Instead of a movable mouthplate, you knew Wheeljack was speaking because his "ears" flashed.

Many early toys had mouthplates that were simply disregarded in favor of mouths in fictional appearances (barring the occasional toy-accurate rendering). Bumblebee in particular had a mask in toy form, but not in cartoon or comic form. A rare reissue of the toy features a cartoon-accurate face, however, as do most toys of him since. Conversely, as Goldbug, he featured a mask in both cartoon and toy form.

On the other hand, Superion has a faceplate on the cartoon even though his toy has a mouth.

Ultra Magnus in his newly reborn body from the Japanese continuity also feature a mouthplate.Hybrid Style Convoy Black Version

Hot Spot sometimes has a mouthplate and sometimes he doesn't.

Beast Wars
Optimus Primal was shown to have a mouthplate which would slide into place when he entered battle. This was used to reconcile the presence of an actual mouth on his animation model with the lack thereof on his toy. Later retoolings of the toy reflected the animation model.

Cybertron
The Optimus Prime animation model displays a similar setup to Optimus Primal, with a mouthplate that slides into place when entering Super Mode. However in this case the toy reflects this, featuring a gimmick that allows the face to display either configuration.

Dreamwave comics continuity
In The War Within, Bumblebee was depicted as having a removable face mask with mouthplate that resembled the original sculpt of his toy. In The Dark Ages, Jetfire was given a similar treatment with a flip-up faceguard. The Titanium Series release of this character design featured the faceguard, but it was not removable. Brawn was depicted with a removable face mask like Bumblebee's in the ongoing Generation 1 series.

IDW comics continuity

In Victory, Robots in Disguise and the Unicron Trilogy, however, it remains static. Sometimes this is proven when a character is shown without a mouthplate when they ordinarily possess one. This is especially prevalent in comics

In Victory, Robots in Disguise and the Unicron Trilogy, however, it remains static. Sometimes this is proven when a character is shown without a mouthplate when they ordinaryily have one. This is especially prevalent in [comics]

In Stormbringer, Jetfire has a removable mask with mouthplate as part of his battle gear. This feature was included in the Classics toy of this character design.
Most recently in All Hail Megatron, Optimus Prime himself revealed he has a retractable mouthplate much like his Movie counterpart. This would be the first time in an official story that the G1 version of the character is portrayed as being able to remove his mouthplate, revealing that he does have a mouth underneath it (which he uses to eat some energon).

Live-action Transformers movies
Optimus Prime is depicted as having a combat mouthplate which closes over his normal mouth to protect his face. To date, only one of Prime's Robot Heroes figurines, Buster Optimus Prime, and the Battle Hooks redeco display his face and mouth, while all other merchandise features the plate. Blackout also has a mouthplate, seen very briefly. Bumblebee has two pieces that rest on the top of his head normally but slide down and clamp together over his whole face in battle. Bumblebee's faceplate has a very insectoid appearance, crediting his name. Jazz has a visor that protects his upper-face in combat. Ironhide also has a mouthplate similar in appearance to Optimus Prime's as shown in some concept art, however he has never officially used it on film.

In Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime's faceplate is smashed to pieces when he is kicked in the face by Megatron, but it is replaced when he combines with Jetfire. While not noticeable in the film, Sideswipe's Human Alliance toy confirms he has an extra layer of armor plating (which was thought to be his actual face) protecting his main face.

Transformers Animated
Most of the Autobots in Optimus Prime's crew have retractable faceplates. Optimus, Bumblebee, Sari and Prowl each have one. Sentinel Prime has one, too, though his is unique in that it covers his whole face. Among the Decepticons, Soundwave has a non-retractable mouthplate, much like his G1 predecessor's. Optimus' mouthplate flaps up and down when he talks, just like that of G1 Optimus, but none of the others' do.

Transformers Prime
Optimus Prime and Wheeljack each have a mouthplate that they slide into place over their faces whenever they enter battle.

Notes
* Fan commentator Zobovor nicknamed these distinctive items "woobers" (crediting the term to a younger relative), and the name became popular with some fans.
* Both the Armada Optimus Prime and the 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime toys have mouthplates that can move up and down when a button located on their heads is depressed, even though Armada Prime's mouthplate never moved in the series itself. Additionally, the 20th Anniversary toy has teeth (or possibly a speaker grille) hidden behind the mouthplate, in reference to Optimus Prime's battle-damaged appearance in the Generation 2 comics, though this detail cannot be seen without disassembling the entire head (or just looking down with it pulled down really far).
* The lack of a full-time mouthplate on certain characters has, in the past, been known to result in certain reactions from the fandom. Oh well.
Together, they make up the Dimensional Exploration/Experimentation Team. Their home timeline disrupted and devastated by events in one of the Transformer's multiversal streams two factions of rival cybernetic beings, the Guardians and the Renegades, called a truce and together with the denizens of their Earth, tracked the devastation back to its source. Only able to send a small team at first, they hand picked a group composed of members from both factions, altered them to match the local life forms, and sent them through the multiverse, vanguard of a force to save their entire reality.

When a mysterious cataclysm began to systematically destroy their universe, the Guardian and Renegade GoBot factions set aside their differences and attempted to preserve their world. After years of research, the human Doctor B used his Dimensional Interfacer to trace the source of the destruction to a newly-created parallel universe, which was "over-writing" and replacing theirs in the grand cosmic tapestry. A group of four Guardians and two Renegades had their bodies modified to match the specifications of these "Transformers", with the intent that they be sent into this new universe in order to integrate themselves into its people, explore and discern a means of saving their own world. When they were dispatched across the dimensions by the Interfacer, rather than wind up in their intended target universe, they were inadvertently caught in the wake of another group of dimensional travelers and arrived on an entirely different Cybertron, in the city of Axiom Nexus.

Dubbed "mechanoids of interest" due to their unconventional means of arrival, the six GoBots were subjected to lengthy interrogation, until it was eventually decided by the TransTechs that ran Axiom Nexus that they would take no active hand in the saving of the GoBots' universe. Additionally, the GoBots were forbidden to leave Axiom Nexus, and were subjected to extensive processing before being sent out to live in the city. During this processing, however, Renegade Bug Bite stole away, using a portable Astro-Beam that he had brought with him to teleport into the city. Working quickly, Bug Bite murdered a Transformer and stole his money, which he used to purchase a body upgrade for himself from Swindle, Swindle & Swindle, and then traded the Astro-Beam to Escargon for an off-world pass that would allow him to use one of the TransTech's dimensional gates, no questions asked. When the Astro-Beam's temporary effect wore off, he was returned to the processing centre and used the pass to travel to the group's original destination universe. He began a plan of his own, arriving in the target universe fifteen years earlier than planned, hoping to avert the cataclysm before it began and hiding himself amongst the ranks of the Decepticons in order to work towards the destruction of Megatron, having pinpointed him as the cosmic fulcrum on which the cataclysm hinged.

Searching for both the missing Bug Bite and some means out of Axiom Nexus, the other GoBots soon stumbled into the mess the Renegade had left behind and were accused of the theft of the passes by General Demolishor of the Military Police. Demolishor kidnapped Treds and took him to the lawless region known as the "Heap", where he intended to ransom him for the passes that he believed the other GoBots had. With no other options, the four remaining GoBots battled the general for their lives, and ultimately emerged victorious thank to the help of Crystal Widow, and the legal wranglings of Airazor and Commander Cheetor. In order to both help the GoBots in their mission, and to save themselves any further trouble, Airazor and Cheetor gave the passes, Airazor had previously recovered, to the GoBots, allowing them to travel on to their intended universe.

The GoBots arrived in their target universe at their allotted time, not long after Bug Bite's fifteen-year-long scheme had resulted in Megatron blowing his head off. The other GoBots materialized in front of his "corpse" shortly after Dreadwind had dragged it to safety, at which point Bug Bite's headless body stood up and fished a new head for itself out of a spare parts bin. As Bug Bite explained to his shocked companions, he had survived simply by keeping his organic brain behind his windshield, instead of his head—and that they could soon expect other GoBots to be joining them... Withered Hope
:In 2004, Takara released an e-Hobby exclusive set of recolored Autobot Mini-Vehicles renamed as characters from Tonka's GoBots. The intention was to have them be those characters infiltrating the Transformers universe. However, Takara got skittish when it was suggested that there was no telling how Bandai (the company responsible for the toys that Tonka adapted to create the GoBots back in the '80s) would react to the set, despite the minimal chance of provable copyright infringement.

:As such, although the set retained the name "G1 GoBots" and the references to various GoBots concepts were kept in the team bio, the individual character names were dropped from the final packaging.
Notes
* The concept behind this set is more ingenious if you know a little about the events of the Challenge of the GoBots TV show. During the GoBotron Saga miniseries, it was revealed that the Renegades possess a machine that can reconfigure GoBots to blend in with robots from other worlds! It is possible that this very machine was used by the G1 GoBots Team to make them appear Cybertronian.

* The team Bio suggests that the GoBots passed some of their technology on to the Cybertronians. Among these is the technology behind the Spy Changers, toys whose molds were originally marketed as the Generation 2 Go-Bots.

* Treds, Bad Boy and Path Finder's colors are inspired by prototype versions of the Mini Vehicles seen in an early Takara catalog book. (See image at right.)

* The Ladybird book Autobots' Lightning Strike features miscolored versions of Huffer and Gears that somewhat resemble the colorations given to Road Ranger and Small Foot. Whether the GoBots' similarities are intentional is debatable.
His dream was to recover the Matrix of Leadership and become the Prime that would return the Transformers to the Golden Age, and he saw opportunity with the rebel upstart Megatron. A patient and polite schemer, Starscream used to wish Megatron would drop the heroic anti-caste charade and be more honest about his lust for power.

These days, he alternatively wishes Megatron would stop being obsessed with his lust for power and chafes under having to work for such a madman. While he serves as Megatron's right-hand man, he constantly looks for a way to become the commander himself and Megatron knows it: Starscream's extremely volatile personality means he is not adept at hiding his true intent. Fortunately for Megatron, Starscream is prone to panic, cowardice and bombastic gestures, meaning that it'd take exceptional circumstances for Starscream to actually manage to get behind him to shove the knife in.
Fiction
Exodus
Starscream may or may not have had a history as a scientist. Regardless of what he did prior, in the early days before the war began he was one of the leaders of the Cybertronian Air Command. When Cybertron fell into chaos following bombings by Megatron's Decepticon followers, Starscream was posted as Sentinel Prime's bodyguard. He was with the Prime at Altihex Casino during a performance by comedian Armorhide when the Decepticons attacked. Sentinel's attempt to flee rather than fight back made Starscream ashamed of his leader, so he had Skywarp and Thundercracker take him to Kaon Prison rather than the safety of Iacon. This earned him loyalty with Megatron, but wary of how sour a revolution could quickly turn Starscream opted not to be directly involved in the gladiator's operations, posting his Seekers at Moon Base One and Trypticon Station. Megatron was intrigued by why Starscream wanted to occupy "that semi-sentient pile of junk" but despite Orion Pax's research they found no clues, with information regarding the Station seemingly censored.

Whenever Starscream's Seekers were present, the Decepticons were victorious in battle against the Autobots. Starscream however, found Megatron's strategies overly convoluted. As the war devolved into a siege of Iacon, Megatron and Soundwave, by probing into forgotten areas of the DataNet, discovered Trypticon was a storage of Dark Energon, the life essence of Unicron. When questioned, Starscream explained since even the Air Command was not sure what Dark Energon was, he had forbidden its use, fearing the damage Megatron's gladiators would unleash. Megatron forgave Starscream, noting how he "was smart enough to be afraid of it", and was granted access.

Starscream sent a message to the Autobots proposing a meeting. Optimus only granted him a communication channel. Starscream stated if the Autobots did not know what Dark Energon was (they did) they would need to find out — and asked what would he could expect from them if something happened to Megatron. Optimus replied that he sought a just peace. Starscream said he understood, broke off the conversation and flew to Kaon Prison where Sentinel was held. Starscream offered Sentinel a chance to redeem his cowardly behavior at Altihex. The ultimate aim of this road to becoming Decepticon leader was to become Prime in a peace settlement with Optimus, and lead Cybertron back to its Golden Age. Starscream then flew to Moon Base One when Megatron ordered him to Trypticon, where he found the Decepticons had invaded the Station and slaughtered and maimed his scientists.

Megatron and Shockwave forced Starscream to select two survivors to absorb Dark Energon, for what was a successful experiment. Requiring more for the Decepticon war effort, Megatron ordered Starscream to capture the Geosynchronous Energon Bridge, below the ruins of Crystal City. Empowered by his first taste of Dark Energon, Starscream activated the device that transmitted Energon to the Station for it to be Darkened. But the Bridge still did not produce enough, and Starscream was ordered to find the Code Key of Power and Key of Justice to the Plasma Energy Chamber underneath the High Council Tower in Iacon. Starscream decided it was time to release Sentinel, renouncing Dark Energon after realizing Megatron had turned his soldiers into addicts. Starscream found the Key of Power within the Hall of Justice and flew underground to find his plan had failed, as Megatron had mortally wounded Sentinel. He could see within Sentinel's body was the Key of Justice, but was prevented from taking it by Blackout. Megatron fought Starscream to a standstill, sparing him because he realized he was a better soldier than a would-be example.

As Megatron entered the Chamber, Teletraan-1 activated the legendary Omega Supreme to fly it away. Aware Starscream had a better chance of escaping Omega's awakening, Megatron ordered Starscream and his Seekers to down Omega, in exchange for more Dark Energon. Giving up on his attempt to give up his addiction, Starscream gleefully accepted and they successfully blew Omega out of the sky, allowing the Decepticons to retrieve the Chamber and corrupt the core. As Cybertron became uninhabitable, the Autobots left on the largest starship ever built - the Ark. Starscream left the planet with Megatron as they gave pursuit on Trypticon, now a Nemesis-class supercruiser. The two ships entered a space bridge, which separated the two ships to unknown parts of space... Transformers: Exodus
Starscream had been on Earth at some point, but was assigned by Megatron to scour the galaxy for remnants of space bridge technology. Returning to their dead homeworld, Starscream built a weapons lab in Kaon and began building a space bridge. He was informed by his Eradicons elsewhere they had apprehended the Autobot spy Cliffjumper. Later, after basking in the glory of successfully activating the space bridge that would return them to Earth and its Energon, Starscream realized Cliffjumper was present. The Autobot claimed to be freed by his captors after defecting to the Decepticons, and warned them of Arcee: this ruse successfully distracted Starscream long enough for Arcee to activate and overload the space bridge, but he jumped in after them moments before the lab was blown sky high.

Falling to Earth, a dazed Starscream picked up a bunny rabbit, commenting that humans were smaller than he remembered. Scanning a fleet of jets flying overhead, he found Cliffjumper and Arcee driving on a road and launched a missile at them. He picked up Arcee's blown off arm and started battering Cliffjumper with it, but the Autobot blew up the rock formation above them and crushed Starscream with the rubble. Having received Starscream's signal, Breakdown came to his rescue, and the duo pursued and overwhelmed the Autobots. Just as Starscream was about to send them back to the AllSpark, Optimus jumped and landed on him, while gunning Breakdown away. As Starscream greeted his opponent, Bumblebee tapped him on the shoulder and sent him flying. Optimus opted not to finish the job, allowing Starscream to escape and fight another day as he got Cliffjumper and Arcee to base. Transformers: Prime (comic)
Before Starscream joined Megatron and the Decepticons, he was commander of a squadron of Energon Seekers on Cybertron. Partners When the Decepticons arrived on Earth, Starscream scouted a old 'Con ship called the Harbinger that had crashed landed on Earth. However he failed to record the coordinates of the crash site or find the Immobilizer. Partners Megatron had left Earth for the depths of space three years ago, leaving Starscream in charge. Starscream spent his time sending out Decepticon grunts to search for Energon depositsDarkness Rising, Part 2, and managed to set up a lucrative energon mine in secret. Rock Bottom One energon search was intercepted by the Autobot Cliffjumper. Once Cliffjumper was defeated, Starscream had him brought aboard his ship, where his captive asked where Megatron was. Assuring the defeated Autobot that he was his own master, he stabbed Cliffjumper with his fist, causing the Autobot to bleed out and finally succumb to his wounds. Soundwave played back a transmission of Cliffjumper and Arcee's last conversation, and Starscream declared she would be their next target, sending two drones after her.

Later, Soundwave picked up deep space transmissions, and a hesitant Starscream opened the space bridge for Megatron's return. Darkness Rising, Part 1 Welcoming him to his energon mine, Starscream asked (quite snarkily) whether Megatron had raised a new army in his three year absence. His leader replied he had recovered Dark Energon, the blood of Unicron himself, to the Seeker's concern; then he asked if Starscream were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, to test its abilities to raise the dead. Starscream declined his unhinged commander's request, offering Cliffjumper's corpse for the experiment. It resulted in a rabid zombie whose rampage was only stopped by Megatron slicing it in half: Starscream was left confused and unnerved by the idea Megatron intended to weaponise such things.

The zombie's activation made the Autobots think Cliffjumper was alive and they raided Starscream's energon mine to find it. Starscream reported this to Megatron, upset about losing the place, and was ordered to his annoyance to bomb the mine: Megatron believed Optimus survived, however. Feeling he had not spent enough time exploring Dark Energon's secrets, he promptly stabbed a shard into his spark, and Starscream looked in horror as a purple light infused Megatron's body... Darkness Rising, Part 2

With the success of the experiment, Megatron took off for parts unknown, leaving Starscream in charge once more. Starscream confided in Soundwave that he thought Megatron had gone a bit batty, and Soundwave responded by playing a sound byte of their master's last order. When Soundwave later picked up Agent Fowler's transmissions, Starscream ordered the human be brought to him. This done, he attempted to interrogate Fowler, who responded not only responded with sarcasm but demanded to see the "manager". Starscream, enraged, called for an Energon prod. He offered Fowler one last chance, and when it was thrown back in his face, Starscream began jabbing Fowler with the prod, noting that energon and the human nervous system shouldn't mix.Darkness Rising, Part 3

The torture eventually weakened Fowler to the point where he almost gave the location of the Autobot's base. However, the sound of battle outside brought about a bout of sarcasm. An annoyed Starscream shocked Fowler into unconsciousness before ordering a pair of Vehicons to find the source of the commotion. After Fowler regained consciousness, he proved to be dazed and incapable of answering anything. When Bulkhead and Bumblebee arrived and aimed their guns at Starscream, the 'Con in turn threatened to kill Fowler, only to discover that Arcee was perched above him, aiming her gun at his head. A stand off ensued, until another outburst by Fowler distracted Starscream, allowing the Autobots to fire on him. Realizing his disadvantage, Starscream fled. Once Megatron returned to the ship, he was outraged at Starscream's actions and proceeded to beat his subordinate for "delaying his plans". Starscream managed to quell his master's anger by announcing he had a way to get their plans back on course. Darkness Rising, Part 4

As it turned out, his plan was to send Soundwave down to use a radio dish array on Earth to set the space bridge's target. He kept a close eye on the team of Autobots who had appeared on the space bridge, confiding in Megatron that he thought they were up to something. When the space bridge appeared to veer off course, he contacted Soundwave to find out what was going on. Once the technical difficulties were sorted, Starscream opened the space bridge so that Megatron could throw the chunk of Dark Energon though. Starscream moved the ship back to a safe distance when the fighting on the rim of the space bridge became more intense, while imploring his master to withdraw as well. Alas, the space bridge exploded, apparently taking Megatron with it, and Starscream gave a brief eulogy before declaring himself leader. Darkness Rising, Part 5

Hiding his joy at Megatron's demise, Starscream gave a speech to the troops, only for it to receive a lukewarm reception at best. Recalling that the Decepticons had left warriors on Earth to guard the energon deposits, Starscream took Soundwave to locate one. They found and reactivated Skyquake, but to Starscream's disappointment, the newly-awakened Decepticon was not keen on accepting him as leader and belted him aside when the opportunity came to attack Optimus Prime. Starscream still believed he could salvage the situation if Skyquake successfully killed Prime under his watch, however a signal Soundwave detected coming from the location of the space bridge explosion meant a reluctant Starscream had to go and check it out. He found Megatron's body floating in space, having barely survived the explosion by virtue of the Dark Energon infusion. Starscream ripped the sliver of Dark Energon from him, but then realised he was being observed by Soundwave's drone, and was forced to take Megatron back to the sick bay on the Nemesis. Along with the news that Skyquake had been defeated by the Autobots, it was not a good day for Starscream. Masters & Students

Starscream's next plan, conceived when Soundwave detected a transmission from Wheeljack, was to have Makeshift masquerade as the Autobot and infiltrate the Autobot base in order to learn its whereabouts. Starscream paid a visit to the now-captive Wheeljack, who almost managed to goad Starscream into killing him. Soundwave stopped the killing blow, reminding Starscream that Wheeljack might be useful later. The two Decepticons retired to the upper hull to wait for Makeshift to activate the GroundBridge, but while Starscream grew steadily impatient, Wheeljack broke free and climbed up to attack him. The GroundBridge opened and Wheeljack stormed through, but Starscream's order to his Vehicon troops came too late, as the GroundBridge closed. It opened again a short time later and Makeshift was thrown through, landing on Starscream. Starscream hoped Makeshift had at least discovered the base's location. Makeshift didn't get a chance to say, as Starscream spotted that the Autobots had triggered the grenade on his waist and flew off before it exploded. Con Job After Soundwave picked up on another Autobot operation, Starscream figured it was a good opportunity to get rid of the Autobots while they were distracted, and sent a squadron of Vehicons on a search and destroy mission (inadvertently exposing their existence to MECH). Convoy (episode)

To Starscream's discomfort, the crew held a vote and he was obliged to call in Knock Out and Breakdown to aid in Megatron's recovery. The discovery that an Energon Harvester was located in an museum on Earth as all the excuse Starscream needed to put that on hold, and the other Decepticons soon obtained the device for him. He took it to Greece to try it out on an energon vein Breakdown had found there. When Knock Out tried to correct him on who had supplied the device, Starscream icily demonstrated its effectiveness on a passing Vehicon. When Bulkhead attacked them, Starscream turned the device on him as well, but then Bulkhead punched him in the face and broke the Harvester. When the rest of the Autobots arrived, and being ditched by Knock Out and Breakdown, Starscream fled. Deus ex Machina

While checking up on Megatron's repairs, Starscream was displeased to learn that Knock Out had engaged in street races with the humans. Starscream instructed Knock Out to seek his permission before engaging in such activity, and was exasperated that Knock Out insisted on calling him "Commander" Starscream, instead of "Lord" Starscream, as he still believed Megatron was headed for death. When Knock Out returned having been bested by the Autobots after another street race, Starscream was furious, both at Knock Out's disobedience, and the fact that he still called him "Commander". Insisting that it was LORD, Starscream decided to make an example of Knock Out, starting with a "cosmetic" punishment. Speed Metal

Some time later, after the ship's electromagnetic shielding failed, Starscream put the Vehicons to work fixing it. He enticed Knock Out into cooperating on the Megatron issue by offering the other 'Con a post as second-in-command. The pair attempted to persuade Soundwave that Megatron was a lost cause, and they should mercifully terminate their leader's life. Soundwave remained unconvinced and pointed out a strange cable attached to Megatron, which Starscream followed to find Arcee and Bumblebee. When Megatron's life support was damaged during the Autobots' exit, Starscream was overjoyed but reluctantly had to command Knock Out to reconnect the cable to keep Soundwave happy. Knock Out later informed him that though Megatron was still alive, his brain activity had ceased. Sick Mind

Overjoyed at this development, Starscream taunted Megatron's body with the chunk of Dark Energon he'd previously extracted from it, and announced he was going to enact a new, epic plan that would prove him worthy of leadership to the other Decepticons. Once the Decepticons had stolen a large lens from an observatory in Hawaii, Starscream had a heat ray constructed atop the ship, and began using it to melt a glacier to get to a huge energon deposit. Unfortunately the Autobots arrived, and Optimus was able to climb onto the ship. Starscream turned the heat ray onto the Autobot leader, but Optimus managed to slice the weapon, causing it to explode. An enraged Starscream prepared to terminate Optimus, only to be intercepted mid-dive by a resurrected Megatron. Megatron took his startled subordinate back to the ship, where Starscream first tried to weasel his way out of trouble, and then outright flee. Both attempts failed, and Megatron dragged the wailing Starscream away by his head. Out of His Head

Fortunately for Starscream, Megatron did not terminate his would be usurper. Unfortunately for Starscream, he was so badly damaged at Megatron's hands that he ended up in the ship's infirmary, on the same slab Megatron had occupied. His leader dropped by to gloat, but Starscream had his own plans. He took the chunk of Dark Energon he'd taken from Megatron when he was in a coma, and went to the site of Skyquake's grave, intending to resurrect the warrior as well as imbuing himself with Dark Energon. Unfortunately the Autobots arrived before Skyquake rose, and Starscream had to retreat through the Decepticon Groundbridge, albeit minus his right arm. Back on the Nemesis, he subjected himself to treatment from Knock Out. The medic attempted to interest him in a new arm, but when the Dark Energon shard he'd retained began flashing, Starscream realized that Skyquake must have reactivated after all. He speedily returned to the site under the guise of retrieving his original arm, only to encounter the Autobots human friends and Skyquake's zombified right arm, the latter of which attacked him. With the arrival of the Autobots, he retreated back to the ship and resigned himself to more of Knock Out's care. Shadowzone (episode)

When Breakdown failed to report in after investigating an energon source, Soundwave discovered that he had been captured by humans. Starscream suggested mounting a rescue, but Megatron decided that if Breakdown had allowed himself to be captured by those weaker than him, he deserved his fate. Starscream, however, took four Vehicon fliers in a rescue attempt, only to discover that he had been freed by his Autobot rival Bulkhead. Starscream offered "many sparkfelt thanks", then ordered Breakdown to finish off the Autobot. Breakdown eventually complied, but Bulkhead was able to overpower the weakened Decepticon. Starscream and the Vehicons began to engage, but Starscream ordered a retreat when Optimus Prime and the rest of his team arrived. Breaking off from the Vehicons, Starscream took time to tell Breakdown not to let Megatron know about his help, and that when the day came, Starscream would call on Breakdown to repay his debt—when the time came to choose sides between Starscream and Megatron. Operation: Breakdown

Starscream was confused when Megatron insisted they go to an old mine. When they found mining equipment still there, he tried to blame it on Soundwave, only for Megatron to pluck an energon crystal from a wall and reveal that he was aware of Starscream's ongoing treachery. Starscream pleaded for his life, until a distraction gave him the opportunity to escape. The mine collapsed when he was in sight of the entrance. He dug himself out and was triumphant, only to realize that Megatron had probably survived and could be a threat in the future. Intending to claim the credit for Megatron's rescue, Starscream dug his way back in, eventually finding Bulkhead and Miko. He threatened the girl until Jack Darby rescued her. Starscream figured that Bulkhead would at least be a nice bonus gift when he dug out Megatron. That plan, too, was short-lived, as Arcee came to Bulkhead's rescue. Starscream was left supporting the rock that Bulkhead had been supporting. That was how Megatron found him, and Starscream begged for his life once more. Rock Bottom

Allowed to remain functional, Starscream again found himself at the end of Megatron's fury when Airachnid revealed that Starscream knew the location of the Harbinger wreck, which might have contained a certain experimental weapon. Starscream was ordered to lead Airachnid to the crash site. He did so, but when Airachnid discovered that the ship had broken in half, she bound Starscream in a web and forced him to tell her where the other half of the ship was. Starscream was found that way by the Autobots, and told them that he wanted to switch sides. Skeptical, the Autobots bound him and took him with them. While the other Autobots went to investigate the other half of the ship, Arcee was left guarding Starscream. When he accidentally spilled the fact that he had been the one who killed Cliffjumper, it provoked her into fighting at length with him, and she eventually gained the upper hand. He was only saved from termination by Bumblebee, and Arcee allowed him to limp away. He decided that he would be an independent from then on. Partners

For the last thousand years of the Great War, Starscream was in charge of an orbital facility that had the capability of producing Dark Energon, though they maintained only a small stockpile because of its unpredictable and uncontrollable nature. The station's force of neutral soldiers were no match for Megatron's invading forces, while Starscream and Jetfire's repeated warnings that no one could control Dark Energon had no effect on Megatron's determination. Instead, Megatron tempted Starscream with knowledge of his past, reminding him of his demotion from Sky Commander to a mere guard over an all-but-derelict station, and offered to let him join the Decepticons, something Starscream scoffed at — at least, at first. Starscream attempted to destroy the station's stock of Dark Energon before the Decepticon leader could reach it, but failed, and watched, first with amusement as Megatron entered the storage chamber...and then with shock as Megatron infused himself with the substance and bent it to his will within moments. Starscream quickly volunteered his services for the Decepticon cause, causing Jetfire to label him a traitor and leave to warn Zeta Prime. Megatron sent him with Thundercracker and Skywarp to Cybertron to reactivate the Energon Bridge. Starscream performed the mission successfully using his trademark style, flair, and modesty, never mind Megatron's taunting and unreasonable impatience, or Thundercracker's warning him of the danger of certain courses of action, or even Skywarp's cluing in to his constant insults.

During the Battle of Iacon City, Starscream led the Decepticons aerial squadrons and Brawl led the Decepticons' ground assault, while Megatron, Soundwave, and Breakdown went behind enemy lines and tried to secure the Omega Key. When Megatron's group met up with Brawl, Starscream refused to send Dark Energon bombers, saying that he wouldn't let Brawl waste anymore of "his ships". Megatron took issue with Starscream dubbing the bombers his, and overrode Starscream's refusal. Later that evening, while looking for the "real" Omega Key, they ran into it: Omega Supreme. Starscream assumed Megatron was killed when Omega attacked a dropship Megatron was heading for and declared himself Decepticon commander. Shortly afterward, Megatron managed to communicate with Starscream and ordered him to attack Omega Supreme, getting the massive Autobot off of Megatron's back. By the time Megatron's group were heading for the missile turrets, Starscream was ready to sound a retreat, which Megatron overrode with the threat of marking any retreating Decepticon as "kill on sight". Fortunately, Megatron arrived moments later and managed to defeat Omega Supreme, making the retreat unnecessary. Later on, he was present at the Core of Cybertron as Megatron corrupted it with Dark Energon.

As the Battle of Iacon continued, Starscream fought through Jetfire and Silverbolt, and attacked Optimus's group in the Decagon. However, the Air Commander was injured by Optimus's Energon-axe and forced to retreat. The wound was apparently bad enough to cause him to sit out the remainder of the conflict. Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
Transformers: War for Cybertron (DS)
:Voice actor: Sam Riegel (English), Gianluca Iacono (Italian)
Starscream had been in control of Trypticon Space Station for years, until Megatron and his forces invaded. Megatron wished to revive the Dark Energon project to aid him in his conquest of Cybertron, but Starscream would have none of it. Megatron was able to fight his way to Starscream himself, and after a brief battle, Starscream had lost. He begged for mercy, and Megatrons spared Starscream in exchange for loyalty to the Decepticons. Starscream obliged and Megatron was taken to the core of the station.

After a test run of the Dark Energon's effects on Decepticons in Kaon Prison, Soundwave deduced the element would only destroy the host. A furious Megatron set Starscream to work on fixing the problem, with Starscream continuously bickering with Barricade over his usefullness. The problem was eventually solved in time for an attack on Iacon City. When Megatron felled Zeta Prime and found the Omega Key, the titanic Autobot Omega Supreme was unleashed upon the Decepticons, quickly crushing them with ease.

Megatron was downright furious with Starscream, declaring he had brought Omega Supreme's rampage upon them all. Starscream retorted that if it wasn't for Megatron and his blind troops, none of this would've happened. Starscream invited Megatron to kill him, but warned him it wouldn't do a thing about Omega Supreme out for their blood. Megatron for the moment let it go, and finally felled Omega Supreme, gaining total dominance over Cybertron.

Sometime later, Starscream ambushed an Autobot recruit-in-training, and would've killed him if it wasn't for Optimus charging to the rescue. He wasn't seen again after that.

The most fundamental and defining gimmick of most Transformer toys is, unsurprisingly, transformation. Nearly every toy marketed as a Transformer can change from one form to another thanks to the brilliance of Hasbro and TakaraTomy's engineers and designers.

Types of Transformation
Beast Transformation
Because many beasts have four limbs, and most Transformer robots have four limbs, beast-to-robot transformations are sometimes not more complicated than "stand up and switch heads". For most incarnations of Cheetor, for example, the beast rear legs are the robot legs, and the beast front legs are the robot arms. (His original and transmetal toys are exceptions, but the rear legs still form the legs.) The original Beast Machines Optimus Primal toy swapped arms and legs when transforming, and the original Beast Wars toy for the character did even less - his legs rotated around to form his robot legs, while the same arms were used virtually unchanged. Several beast Transformers turn beast rear legs into robot arms, produce robot legs from inside their torsos, and turn their beast front legs into kibble.

Attempts to use a similar transformation schemes for aerial beastformers have generally produced problems, as birds have two limbs which are realistically too small to serve as either set of robot limbs, and wings which need to be quite large in proportion to the body. Attempts have varied from using the wings as legs, using the wings as very decorative kibble, using a specifically posed bird that can hide the robot limbs, and trying to pretend that a wadded-up robot is a bird if you snap on wings. The approaches have met with varying success, but that hasn't stopped anyone from trying.

Symmetrical Transformation
Since most altmodes (vehicles, beasts) are symmetrical, and the default robot mode is shaped more-or-less like a (symmetrical) human, the toy transformation can also usually be described as symmetrical. Anything that was on the left side of the robot ends up on the left side of the altmode, and anything done to the left side during the transformation is also done to the right side. If any parts swap sides, it's because of a full 180-degree rotation (such as the waist-swivel common in beast-to-robot transformations), with the result retaining symmetry. Minor differences in tooling between the left and right side don't necessarily make the transformation asymmetrical. (E.g., if one arm has a weapon attached, or a spring-loaded attack function.)

Asymmetrical Transformation
Asymmetrical transformation is much less common than symmetrical transformation. Examples are Beast Machines Buzz Saw (where the beast tail becomes one robot arm, and two of his six beast legs become the other robot arm), Energon Omega Supreme (where the two halves of his body are entirely different toys), and Transmetal 2 Beast Wars Megatron (where the dragon's head becomes one robot arm, and the other emerges from inside his dragon body, while his dragon arms end up as kibble). Several other Megatron toys are also asymmetrical, including the original.

Other terms
Because "Transformers" is a registered trademark, Hasbro systematically avoids using the word "transform" as a verb when referring to the toys in recent years. Instead, the term "convert" is used: For example, toys that don't transform have the note "Figure does not convert" on the packaging. Apparently, Hasbro employees are trained to automatically use the word in any official conversation, such as interviews and panel discussions.

Meanwhile, toy instructions often use the simpler term "change", as in "change to robot".

Transformers toys often have a difficulty rating for the transformation on the packaging, ranging from Easy (1), to Expert (3 or 5).

Though his toy is a Decepticon by allegiance, it keeps its sculpted Maximal logo.

the real-world toyline

Power Core Combiners is a toyline, released concurrently with the 2010 Transformers and Generations toylines.

The design of the toys relies heavily on the titular gimmick, combination. Every main character is a "Commander" sold with either a Mini-Con (which connects in several configurations) or a set of four drone vehicles (which connect as limbs to form a larger robot). The Mini-Cons and drones can be attached to any Commander, leading to millions of possible combinations between all of the figures.

Unlike the Mini-Cons of previous lines, the Power Core Combiner Mini-Cons lack their own independent vehicle or animal modes. Rather, they turn from robots into accessories for their Commanders. In vehicle mode, a Commander can use a Mini-Con as a weapon or tool. In robot mode, a Commander can wield a Mini-Con as a hand-held weapon or wear him as armor.

The drones are similar to Energon Optimus Prime's "Prime Force", being vehicles with no robot modes. While the drones are left/right interchangeable, an arm-drone cannot become a leg-drone (or vice versa) making them more limited than the Prime Force drones. However, the fact that there are several teams of drones who can be swapped among Commanders adds a Scramble-City-esque dimension of play. Also, people who love Transformers but hate transforming can breathe easy in the knowledge that the drones automorph into and out of limb mode simply by being plugged into and removed from a Commander.

Fictionally, the Power Core Combiners are not strictly connected to any other continuity, although Smolder and Chopster have made an appearance in the Movie continuity via Cyber Missions.

Fiction
The toys' packaging presents a simple storyline about Power Core Combination technology being found on Earth. A more robust account was published in the Collectors' Club magazine #32. As of yet there has been no narrative fiction, only summaries and bios.

Place in continuity
As for which larger continuity family (if any) this fits into, clues are scant and contradictory. The strongest evidence appears to suggest the live-action film series:
* The storyline blurb on the packaging references "monsters like Devastator" in terms that best match the live-action version.
* Salvage's bio is fairly explicit that he is his movie counterpart, even referencing his origin as an Mutation.
* Smolder has made an appearance in movie-related fiction.
* Icepick received a new toy in the Dark of the Moon toyline.

However, other elements seem to hint towards Generation 1:
* Huffer's bio says that he's "just as inclined to grumble as he's ever been," implying that he is a preexisting, familiar character. There are only a few Huffers, and this points pretty clearly to the original.
* While less explicit, several characters have bios that are too similar to same-named characters in the Generation 1 continuity family to be a coincidence. Leadfoot is good at infiltrating Decepticon bases, Sledge is noted for his loyalty and love of destruction, Icepick wants to scrap the obsolete, and Stakeout is a former loose cannon cop on the edge who has since mellowed out. Compare this to what Sea Spray got.

Hasbro's official stance on the matter is that Power Core Combiners are not tied to any particular continuity family. This is in keeping with the company's recent apparent reluctance to tie its toylines to specific universes, and can be interpreted as "both," "neither," or not actually even an answer. Any conclusions are up to the reader to make.

Power Core Combiners
Commander 2-packs
Each 2-pack contains a roughly-Scout-class-sized Commander figure as well as a partner Mini-Con.

Commanders transform from a robot to vehicle mode, as well as a "power up" torso-mode that can be combined with any of the drone sets from the 5-packs (see below). Commanders also have standard Mini-Con Powerlinx plugs, so they are compatible with any Mini-Cons, not just their pack-in partners.

Mini-Cons have multiple configurations to enhance their larger partners. Each one transforms from a robot to "armor" that any Commander can use (though with limited usefulness on the 5-pack Commander molds due to placement of their Powerlinx plugs). They also have weapon modes; most have separate configurations for Commanders' robot and alternate modes, though a few only really have one that works on both.
* Skyhammer (fighter jet) and Airlift (gun emplacement)

Wave 5
* Undertow (speedboat) and Waterlog (gun emplacement)
* Salvage (monster truck) and Bomb-Burst (missile launcher)
5-packs
Each 5-pack contains a Commander and four drone-units.

Unlike the Commanders designed for the 2-packs, most (if not all) of the Commanders designed originally for the 5-packs do not have Powerlinx hardpoints that normally function for the 2-pack Mini-Cons' armor modes while in their standard Commander robot modes. However, these Commanders' power up modes allow for the proper placement of their Powerlix hardpoints.

The drones each automatically transform into a super-robot limb when they are attached to the bright blue connector points on any Commander's "power up" mode, and snap back to drone-mode once removed. Arm-drones and leg-drones cannot swap functions; they can be attached to each others' connection points, but arms will always be arms and legs will always be legs. Each drone also has Mini-Con Powerlinx hardpoints.
