==Fiction==
===''Shattered Glass''===
Wheeljack created an army of [[Dinobot (SG)|Dinobot]]s to rain vengeance upon [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]] for laughing at his genius. Dramatically riding into battle upon the head of a sauropod-styled Dinobot, Wheeljack proclaimed his intentions. However, Optimus convinced Wheeljack that if his Dinobots were able to take out the [[Decepticon]]s, he would be welcomed back into the fold. Upon being ordered to attack the Decepticons, the enthusiastic beasts gave out a rousing battle cry. Then they turned on each other. As punishment for his failure, Wheeljack found himself performing degradingly basic repairs to the ''[[Ark (SG)|Ark]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s computer systems and was told that, should he sabotage the ship, he would be on it when it launched. {{storylink|Dungeons & Dinobots}}

Following the Ark's crash onto [[Earth]], [[Rodimus (SG)|Rodimus]] ordered Wheeljack to adjust the ship's computer [[Teletraan-X (SG)|Teletraan-X]] to accept commands from only the two of them. After that was done, he, Rodimus, and [[Goldbug (SG)|Goldbug]], aided by [[Buster Witwicky (SG)|some]] [[Butch Witwicky (SG)|human]] [[Spike Witwicky (SG)|allies]], infiltrated and took over [[Burpleson Air Force Base]], a command station for a [[human]] [[Global Orbiting Defense Satellite|orbital defense weapon]]. When the Decepticons attacked the base, Wheeljack was somewhat damaged and wandering the corridors when he was accosted by [[Ravage (SG)|Ravage]] and [[Sephie Beller|a Decepticon-allied human]] who accused him, ''him'' of being crazy. So he gave chase. {{storylink|Eye in the Sky}}

Goldbug enlisted Wheeljack and [[Side Burn (SG)|Side Burn]] to build a [[stellar spanner|Stellar Spanner]], claiming that Rodimus had commanded it be done under "project silence". They were lacking a volunteer to try the Spanner when they were fortuitously attacked by [[Heatwave (Timelines)|Heatwave]]. While Heatwave blasted Side Burn (who was later Mysteriously Fine), Wheeljack and Goldbug grabbed Heatwave, and Wheeljack had the idea of forcing the Decepticon to transform. They bound him up and put him in the spanner, though he still managed to deliver a solid kick to Wheeljack. Annoyed, Wheeljack was so deep in this thoughts that he didn't have time to react when [[Blitzwing (SG)|Blitzwing]] subsequently took him out with a [[Jet judo|Jet-Judo]] throw. Wheeljack was merely feigning, of course, and used an electro-shell to activate the Spanner. His victory was short-lived, as Blitzwing began broadcasting the noise the humans called "music" over the Autobot comm frequency, forcing Wheeljack to retreat with the others. {{storylink|Blitzwing Bop}}

When Sephie Beller had herself augmented with Cybertronian technology, Rodimus had Wheeljack turn his microwave gun on her. The gun successfully neutralized her, though Wheeljack was offended by Rodimus's suggestion she was dead, affirming that she would be perfectly fine when he and [[Ratchet (SG)|Ratchet]] vivisected her. Once he had Sephie properly bound, Wheeljack restored her to consciousness and asked her to answer some scientific questions while he carried out his work. Unfortunately Wheeljack didn't get a chance to get started before [[Beachcomber (SG)|Beachcomber]] started acting up. When Rodimus informed him that there was a jamming field covering the area, Wheeljack realized with disappointment that his test subject was going to be used as a hostage instead. When the party was crashed by [[R.J. Blackrock]] in a giant [[Centurion (SG)|suit of power armor]], Wheeljack tried to turn the microwave gun on him, only to be sent flying by a missile. {{storylink|Transhuman}}

[[File:Timelines5-WheeljackSlicer.jpg|left|100px|thumb|We [http://alt2day.dyndns.org/ already knew] SG Wheeljack was a dimension-hopper.]]

Still serving Rodimus, Wheeljack eventually perfected a portable form of the stellar spanner, which he was able to mount as a drive system for a spacecraft. Using this, he began travel to other universes, in an effort to track the journey of [[Nexus Prime]]. On [[Primax 509.28 Epsilon|one such excursion]] he managed to deceive [[Slicer (Decepticon)|Slicer]] into thinking he was a future version of the Decepticon, and so through trade he obtained a sample of [[Forestonite]]. Before Slicer could realize that he had been given a bum deal, Wheeljack was long gone. {{storylink|Generation 2: Redux}}

Wheeljack next formed an alliance with [[Ultra Magnus (SG)|Ultra Magnus]], failed usurper of his brother Optimus Prime. With Magnus armed with the [[Terminus Blade]], stolen from the [[Vault of the Unknown]], they hatched a plan to enter [[Primax 207.0 Epsilon|a positive polarity universe]]. In his dimensional travels, Wheeljack identified a unique substance called [[Rarified Energon]], found only on the Earth of that particular [[universal stream]]. Along with [[Tracks (SG)|Tracks]], [[Wreck-Gar (SG)|Wreck-Gar]], and the [[Junkion (species)|Junkion]]s, they attacked the Autobot mining installation [[Construction station|Ironworks]] on that world, gaining access to the Energon. Wheeljack constructed a device which could destroy the entire universe using the Terminus Blade, channeling the energies of the devastation back into the Blade. Autobots and Decepticons of two worlds attempted to stop Wheeljack and Magnus, but failed. The positive universe was destroyed, leaving only a relative few survivors as the positive-Earth and all who dwelled on it entered the negative polarity universe. {{storylink|Invasion Prologue}} {{storylink|Invasion (issue)|Invasion}}

Seeking to consolidate further power from destroyed universes, Wheeljack and the Junkions built the [[Collector]] on positive-Earth, letting Ultra Magnus charge the Terminus Blade repeatedly by destroying one universe after another. [[Treadshot (SG)|Treadshot]] and several heroic Decepticons and Autobots tracked them down, and battle ensued once more. {{storylink|Distant Fissures}} Ultimately however, Ultra Magnus's forces were undone by [[Nexus Prime]], member of the Thirteen and master of the [[Star Saber (Prima)|Star Saber]], who retrieved the Terminus Blade, banished Magnus, and demolished their equipment. {{storylink|Restoration}}
Goldbug enlisted Wheeljack and [[Side Burn (SG)|Side Burn]] to build a [[stellar spanner|Stellar Spanner]], claiming that Rodimus had commanded it be done under "project silence". They were lacking a volunteer to try the Spanner when they were fortuitously attacked by [[Heatwave (Timelines)|Heatwave]]. While Heatwave blasted Side Burn (who was later Mysteriously Fine), Wheeljack and Goldbug grabbed Heatwave, and Wheeljack had the idea of forcing the Decepticon to transform. They bound him up and put him in the spanner, though he still managed to deliver a solid kick to Wheeljack. Annoyed, Wheeljack was so deep in this thoughts that he didn't have time to react when [[Blitzwing (SG)|Blitzwing]] subsequently took him out with a [[Jet judo|Jet-Judo]] throw. Wheeljack was merely feigning, of course, and used an electro-shell to activate the Spanner. His victory was short-lived, as Blitzwing began broadcasting the noise the humans called "music" over the Autobot comm frequency, forcing Wheeljack to retreat with the others. {{storylink|Blitzwing Bop}}

When Sephie Beller had herself augmented with Cybertronian technology, Rodimus had Wheeljack turn his microwave gun on her. The gun successfully neutralized her, though Wheeljack was offended by Rodimus's suggestion she was dead, affirming that she would be perfectly fine when he and [[Ratchet (SG)|Ratchet]] vivisected her. Once he had Sephie properly bound, Wheeljack restored her to consciousness and asked her to answer some scientific questions while he carried out his work. Unfortunately Wheeljack didn't get a chance to get started before [[Beachcomber (SG)|Beachcomber]] started acting up. When Rodimus informed him that there was a jamming field covering the area, Wheeljack realized with disappointment that his test subject was going to be used as a hostage instead. When the party was crashed by [[R.J.
Still serving Rodimus, Wheeljack eventually perfected a portable form of the stellar spanner, which he was able to mount as a drive system for a spacecraft. Using this, he began travel to other universes, in an effort to track the journey of [[Nexus Prime]]. On [[Primax 509.28 Epsilon|one such excursion]] he managed to deceive [[Slicer (Decepticon)|Slicer]] into thinking he was a future version of the Decepticon, and so through trade he obtained a sample of [[Forestonite]]. Before Slicer could realize that he had been given a bum deal, Wheeljack was long gone. {{storylink|Generation 2: Redux}}

Wheeljack next formed an alliance with [[Ultra Magnus (SG)|Ultra Magnus]], failed usurper of his brother Optimus Prime. With Magnus armed with the [[Terminus Blade]], stolen from the [[Vault of the Unknown]], they hatched a plan to enter [[Primax 207.0 Epsilon|a positive polarity universe]]. In his dimensional travels, Wheeljack identified a unique substance called [[Rarified Energon]], found only on the Earth of that particular [[universal stream]]. Along with [[Tracks (SG)|Tracks]], [[Wreck-Gar (SG)|Wreck-Gar]], and the [[Junkion (species)|Junkion]]s, they attacked the Autobot mining installation [[Construction station|Ironworks]] on that world, gaining access to the Energon. Wheeljack constructed a device which could destroy the entire universe using the Terminus Blade, channeling the energies of the devastation back into the Blade. Autobots and Decepticons of two worlds attempted to stop Wheeljack and Magnus, but failed. The positive universe was destroyed, leaving only a relative few survivors as the positive-Earth and all who dwelled on it entered the negative polarity universe. {{storylink|Invasion Prologue}} {{storylink|Invasion (issue)|Invasion}}

Seeking to consolidate further power from destroyed universes, Wheeljack and the Junkions built the [[Collector]] on positive-Earth, letting Ultra Magnus charge the Terminus Blade repeatedly by destroying one universe after another. [[Treadshot (SG)|Treadshot]] and several heroic Decepticons and Autobots tracked them down, and battle ensued once more. {{storylink|Distant Fissures}} Ultimately however, Ultra Magnus's forces were undone by [[Nexus Prime]], member of the Thirteen and master of the [[Star Saber (Prima)|Star Saber]], who retrieved the Terminus Blade, banished Magnus, and demolished their equipment. {{storylink|Restoration}}
Wheeljack created an army of [[Dinobot (SG)|Dinobot]]s to rain vengeance upon [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]] for laughing at his genius. Along with [[Tracks (SG)|Tracks]], [[Wreck-Gar (SG)|Wreck-Gar]], and the [[Junkion (species)|Junkion]]s, they attacked the Autobot mining installation [[Construction station|Ironworks]] on that world, gaining access to the Energon. Wheeljack constructed a device which could destroy the entire universe using the Terminus Blade, channeling the energies of the devastation back into the Blade. Autobots and Decepticons of two worlds attempted to stop Wheeljack and Magnus, but failed. The positive universe was destroyed, leaving only a relative few survivors as the positive-Earth and all who dwelled on it entered the negative polarity universe. {{storylink|Invasion Prologue}} {{storylink|Invasion (issue)|Invasion}}

Seeking to consolidate further power from destroyed universes, Wheeljack and the Junkions built the [[Collector]] on positive-Earth, letting Ultra Magnus charge the Terminus Blade repeatedly by destroying one universe after another. [[Treadshot (SG)|Treadshot]] and several heroic Decepticons and Autobots tracked them down, and battle ensued once more. {{storylink|Distant Fissures}} Ultimately however, Ultra Magnus's forces were undone by [[Nexus Prime]], member of the Thirteen and master of the [[Star Saber (Prima)|Star Saber]], who retrieved the Terminus Blade, banished Magnus, and demolished their equipment. {{storylink|Restoration}}

'''The Autobots find themselves caught between a Blackrock and a hard place when the secret of the Onyx operating system is revealed.'''

==Synopsis==
At the [[Earth Defense Command]] headquarters on [[Bikini Atoll]], [[Marissa Faireborn]], [[Ayana Jones]], [[Thundercracker (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Thundercracker]], and [[Buster (IDW)|Buster]] wait outside the cell holding [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Spike Witwicky]] as [[G.B. Blackrock|Garrison Blackrock]] talks to him inside. Thundercracker is unsure why Blackrock gets to speak to Spike, and argues that he should be given the chance as well, thinking he can get the human to open up, but Faireborn is uninterested in anything Spike might have to say. Not so for Blackrock; he has something he wants Spike to do for him, and as he builds up to his request, he tells Spike about his family lineage and shows him the [[Onyx]] source code, now running on three billion devices across the [[Earth]]...

[[Jetfire (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Jetfire]] is also studying the Onyx code aboard the ''[[Ark-7]]'', and has deduced that ''all'' copies of the code are linked via a quantum signal, the collective code altering itself in response to changes to other copies. Using [[D.0.C.]] to track the signal, Jetfire—accompanied by [[Jazz (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Jazz]] and [[Kup (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Kup]] aboard [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]], with [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]] observing from orbit—follows it to its source on the [[Antarctica|Antarctic]] island of [[Bouvetoya]]. Their atmospheric approach is detected by the [[Decepticon]]s in the ''[[Nemesis (G1)|Nemesis]]'', but [[Galvatron (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Galvatron]] decides against alerting their EDC allies—because, as the Autobots soon discover, the humans are well aware of their arrival, and have defenses of their own in place.

Kup's complaints about the freezing weather fade to nothing when compared to the four gigantic [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]]/[[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] clone-combiners they find guarding the station at the signal's source location! Created by Blackrock using the knowledge he gained from the [[Enigma of Combination]], the colossal monstrosities pound Jetfire and Kup until they are offline, and rip Jazz's arm off—even Sky Lynx's firepower fails to stop them, and when he tries to flee, they even prove able to ''transform'' and pursue him! [[Arcee (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Arcee]] instructs Sky Lynx to lead the combiners to the ''Ark-7'', where she has [[Sideswipe (G1)/IDW Generation 1 continuity|Sideswipe]] unleash the full might of the ship's armament against them. Unfortunately, disaster strikes: through the Onyx source code running aboard the ''Ark-7'', Blackrock has gained control of the ship's systems and activates its deflector shields! Every missile and blast unleashed by the ''Ark-7'' explodes against the inside of its own shields, shredding the ship, while Sky Lynx's momentum causes him to crash into the shield from the outside, knocking himself offline. Trapped inside the ship, inside a shield that will not even allow communications signals to pass through, Arcee tries to take stock of the situation while [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] deduces what is going on: the Onyx code... the code written in ancient Cybertronian, the code that is inextricably linked across all space... is the very source code of the Enigma of Combination itself!

Back on Earth, Blackrock explains that the worldwide inter-linked Onyx network gives him direct, personal access to literally every piece of information on every device running the system. But it's not just simple data—the knowledge gives the Blackrock an understanding of the people ''behind'' the data, letting him digitally "see" into their hearts and minds. Blackrock is able to peer into the soul of anybody... but when he turns that insight on himself, he sees nothing. And this, he explains, is at the core of what he wants Spike to do for him. Spike Witwicky's task, from within his prison cell, is to find out why Garrison Blackrock has no soul.

Aboard the ''Nemesis'', the Decepticons survey images of the destruction that has been wrought upon the Autobots. Soundwave believes Galvatron knew of Blackrock's plan, but Galvatron refutes the notion; he and the Decepticons are not the sort who scheme, Galvatron claims, not the kind to justify what they do with ideas of good and evil, but 'bots who are honest with themselves and the actions they take. And now the time for ''taking'' has come... the Decepticons will storm the ''Ark-7'' and take the Autobots' [[Space bridge|spacebridge]]!
==Notes==
===Continuity notes===
*Thundercracker recounts how he saved everyone in [[All Hail Megatron issue 12|''All Hail Megatron'' #12]], though calling himself "hero of the Cybertronians" is probably pushing it since he was immediately shot by one of his own for doing so. Can't win fer tryin', TC!
*Jetfire remarks that it's "about time [Arcee and Kup] got back." The pair are returning from the events of the ''[[The Transformers: Sins of the Wreckers|Sins of the Wreckers]]'' mini-series, which had yet to begin at the time of this issue's publication.
*We saw Blackrock's army of Thrust and Ramjet duplicates in action at the climax of the "Onyx Interface" story arc, in [[Onyx Interface Part Three: ONoffON|issues #37]] and [[The Onyx Interface Conclusion: The Obliterati|#38]].
*Blackrock being "empty inside" should serve as a reminder of what we learned back in [[South of Heaven|issue #43]], when Faireborn mentioned that there was no record of his existence from more than three years ago...

===Transformers references===
*Sky Lynx recalls an old adventure on [[Athenia]], the planet which served as Autobot secondary command post in [[Transformers: The Headmasters (cartoon)|''The Headmasters'' animated series]].
*We only get a few glimpses, but Jetfire's stealth colors are based on the ''[[Henkei! Henkei! Transformers (toyline)|Gentei! Gentei!]]'' [[Jetfire (G1)/toys#Gentei! Gentei!|Dark Skyfire]] figure.
*With his plan complete, Blackrock remarks that "all are one", invoking the old Transformers maxim, "[['Til all are one]]".
*[[Jazz (Movie)|Jazz]] is [[Transformers (film)|brutally ripped apart]] by [[Megatron (Movie)|a gigantic enemy]]. Sound familiar?
*Jetfire's moment of mid-transformation as he lands on Bouvetoya looks hauntingly similar to his G1 toy's third mode.

===Real-world references===
*This issue continues the theme for his arc, with a story title taken from a {{w|The Nothing Man|Jim Thompson novel}}.
*"We're gonna need bigger guns", Jazz laments upon seeing the combiners, probably a riff on the famous "bigger boat" quote from ''{{w|Jaws}}''.

===Errors===
*If the station relaying the quantum signal is supposed to be a human-scaled building (and it has what appear to be doors and windows that indicate it is), the perspective on the art is pretty shonky, making either the building look minuscule, or the Autobots look the size of mountains.

*'''Subscription cover:''' Jetfire, Jazz, Kup, Sky Lynx, and D.0.C. in the Antarctic, by [[Casey Coller]] and [[Joana Lafuente]]

'''The Autobots find themselves caught between a Blackrock and a hard place when the secret of the Onyx operating system is revealed.'''

==Synopsis==

==Notes==
===Continuity notes===

===Transformers references===

===Real-world references===

===Errors===
*If the station relaying the quantum signal is supposed to be a human-scaled building (and it has what appear to be doors and windows that indicate it is), the perspective on the art is pretty shonky, making either the building look minuscule, or the Autobots look the size of mountains.

Though Safeguard combines the twins' bodies to further enhance their already-impressive combat capabilities, it does not appear to be a melding of their minds. Instead, both twins work in complete synchronization in this form. Unfortunately, both twins are cocky, brash showoffs who are only partially in control over their own powers... which makes Safeguard a potentially very dangerous robot to everyone around him.
Upon arrival on Earth, Jetstorm and Jetfire were sent on an aerial search of [[Detroit]], but things went bad when their power of flight caused [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]] to mistake the twins for Decepticons. A fight broke out between them, during which Jetfire and Jetstorm merged into Safeguard and floored Ratchet with a flying kick. Just as Optimus Prime tackled the combined twins, Sentinel Prime and Jazz arrived to interrupt the fight and explain that Prime's opponents were actually Autobots. {{storylink|Where Is Thy Sting?}}
When Sentinel Prime was captured by [[Ramjet (Animated)|one of Starscream's clones]], the twins merged into Safeguard to save their commander. ==Notes==
[[Image:TFA Jetfire Jetstorm concept.jpg|right|200px|thumb|CHEEKS!]]
* Jetfire and Jetstorm's fire/wind theme has its roots in some of the earliest concepts of ''Animated''. [[Sean Galloway]], who had been commissioned to do early concept work for the series, revealed several pieces of this concept art long before the "final" [[Derrick J. Wyatt|Derrick Wyatt]]-designed characters were shown. Among these images were a pair of "fire and wind" robots who have a few features that made it into the jet-twins' final designs.
* In addition to the fire/wind theme, the twins' method of combination is seemingly an intentional homage to Hyōryū and Enryū/Chōryūjin from the final installment of Takara's [[Brave (franchise)|Brave]] Series, ''King of Braves GaoGaiGar''. The split two-color gridlines in the background of their combination are also evocative of the Raker brothers' combination sequence from Brave Exkaiser.
* In the early stages of the toy's development, the end of the twins' combined vehicle mode was supposed to split apart and wings were supposed to slide out of the shins, so that the combined mode resembled an [[Luke Skywalker|X-wing fighter]]. However, this did not appear in the released instructions because the toy can't take the form without disconnecting the legs of Jetfire and Jetstorm.
