Synopsis
First Aid's boss, Pharma, catches him reading datalog 113 of Wreckers: Declassified when he should be working and orders him to go check on a Fader. While going to check on Roulette, First Aid recalls the time when Springer contacted him asking for help with a special project. He is surprised when newly injured members of Dogfight's recon team are brought into the medical ward. First Aid began carefully checking them all over, paying special attention to their Autobot insignias, while everyone else is confused by his strange behavior. He finds something of interest on Dodger and excitedly tells him he has to operate immediately. First Aid contacts Springer letting him know what he found.

Rung treats the shell-shocked Flattop and finds out that he is a Survivor of the Babu Yar atrocity. He was given a new body like any Survivor who requested one, and assigned to Silverstreak's group. On his first mission after recovering from Babu Yar, Flattop saw the Shimmer, which completely pushed him over the edge, and was why he was being treated by Rung now. As Rung gave Flattop scientific and psychoanalytical explanations for the Shimmer, Flattop dies right there in his office.

Ironfist is questioned by the Ethics Committee regarding his invention of cerebro-sensitive bullets. The committee comes to the conclusion that use of the bullets would constitute a war crime, and orders him to surrender the bullets within 36 hours. On the way out, he runs into Skyfall, who's impressed by his restrained reaction to the Committee confiscating his work. Brainstorm arrives, bringing his latest development, the Malevolent Counterintuitive Pathogen, before the committee, Ironfist and Skyfall aren't quite sure if he's kidding as they head back to the lab.

On Hydrus 5, Pyro and Afterburner survey the wrecked planet, newly freed from the threat of the Decepticons. Afterburner complements Pyro on his bravery before speeding off, just before Pyro finds himself experiencing The Shimmer.

Springer stands on the command deck of the Debris, mulling over Agent 113's report, retrieved from a slug lodged in Dodger's Autobot insignia. The report warns of recent happenings at the Garrus-9 penal colony. With it in mind, Springer is deciding on who to invite to join the Wreckers.

Guzzle, currently stationed at the Igue-Moor Fuel Depot, is shooting statues with The Judge when he sees a sort of shimmer...

In his workshop, Ironfist reviews the schematic of his head and the cerebro-sensitive bullet lodged in it, remembering his long relationship with Skyfall. He had developed Optimus Prime's ion blaster, though the Autobot leader attributed its invention to Skyfall. Ironfist had continued to support Skyfall, after the latter spent a hundred years in the Decepticon Grindcore prison camp, and after the black phosphex incident when Skyfall was assigned for a time as a guard at Garrus 9.

Rotorstorm enjoys the victory the Autobots have just attained in the battle of Karashi Delta, but even that is tainted by his memories of the Iaconian Aerial Academy, and the bullying he suffered at the hands of his instructor, Jetstream. He's brought out of his reverie when he spies the Shimmer and opens fire at it.

Springer decides on the four Autobots who will be invited to join the Wreckers: Rotorstorm, Guzzle, Pyro and Skyfall.

Skyfall passes on reactions to the "Fisitron" datalogs to Ironfist, such as readers having coined the term "Fisitronisms". Irritated by the criticisms, Ironfist returns to packing up the cerebro-cannons and Skyfall leaves. Shortly afterward Ironfist receives a call from Prowl, who's well aware that he's behind Fisitron.

Springer meets with Kup, and reveals that Prowl has vetoed Skyfall as a Wrecker and is sending a substitute. Kup relates a story of how Prowl once killed a Decepticon by reading Cybertron law at him until he triggered his own kill-switch. The current Wreckers vote on the three Autobots whom Springer has picked to invite.

As Ironfist tidies his workshop, Springer appears to him in a shimmer and invites him to join the Wreckers. Ironfist naturally agrees, and Springer reports back to the other Wreckers that the only one who turned him down was Guzzle. However Twin Twist reports that Guzzle's holding on line 2.

Skyfall is astounded at Ironfist's being accepted into the Wreckers. When Ironfist gives him the workshop, he's so excited that he doesn't hear Ironfist saying that he doesn't think he'll be coming back. Once his friend has left, Ironfist receives another call...

Ironfist arrives at Igue Moor and meets Guzzle, who's impressed when Ironfist reveals he's Fisitron. The pair encounter Rotorstorm and then Pyro, who they at first mistake for Optimus Prime come to see them off. They decide to try out the lightformer cannon Ironfist has brought along.

Nine months later, Skyfall objects to the Ethics Committee cleaning out the contents of his workshop, due to his failure to attend hearings. No sooner has Xaaron disconnected the call than a pre-recorded message begins to play, triggered by Ironfist's death. Ironfist reveals that he knows Skyfall tampered with the cerebro-gun so it would "accidentally" go off, and that Skyfall leaked the Gideon's Glue research to the Decepticons. As the recording is also being sent out as a datalog, the Enforcement Squad begins banging on the workshop door in short order. With nowhere to run, Skyfall drinks a vial of Gideon's Glue found concealed in the sky-sled.
"That, is the best story ever."
:—Springer, upon hearing Kup tell him about the time Prowl literally bored someone to death.

"A head shot at close range...not a pleasant way to go."
:—Rotorstorm, unknowingly being ironic.

"I nearly forgot to tell you, I've programmed the workshop terminal to treat this message as one of Fisitron's datalogs. Which means that every one of my subscribers will have these words beamed directly into their neural processors. You said you were a slow reader, Skyfall. You're a slow listener as well. There are 4,000 Autobots out there who've heard this part of the message before you have."
:—Ironfist from beyond the grave, telling Skyfall that he's screwed.

Notes
* This text-only story was released as a bonus feature in Last Stand of the Wreckers trade paperback, and is a framing device for the material in the trade.
* The story had some minor revisions in the version printed in the hardcover edition, most notably Rung's deliberations on vocal synthesizers. The errors mentioned below are still present.
*Rung has a model of the Ark-1.
*Delphi was the name of a secret Autobot base in James Robert's Eugenesis fanfiction.
*The number 113 crops up in a bunch of places: Agent 113 is the spy who passes on the information about Garrus-9, Room 113 is where the Ethic Committee meets, and Datalog 113 is the one that concerns the Pova incident. This a in little in-joke by James Roberts, in reference to issue #113 of the Marvel UK Transformers comic, which was the issue that got him hooked on the series.

Errors
*One paragraph begins with Perceptor describing the effects of "vicarious perception", but randomly jumps focus to Ironfist after the first few lines. It looks as if a section discussing the Jumpstarters' medical issues was cut for space, but wasn't fully removed.
*Skyfall, at Kimia, fears that an incoming communication might be from Perceptor, "about last night's brawl in the Exit Rooms." Since the transmission in question was triggered by Ironfist's death, Perceptor would presumably still be with the remaining Wreckers en route to Earth when the aforementioned brawl occurred.
I seem to remember First Aid pegging Roulette as a male in this story, which might mean it's a different Roulette than the female one, obviously.Nu-Priest
:Might be presumptuous, but Roulette is a repaint of a male character, and all that's changed to make her a her is her head, which was missing from this Roulette. It's possible First Aid just didn't know/couldn't tell.--Carrion 18:33, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
::Well, I sincerely doubt the presence of the head would deter a doctor from being able to tell the robot's "gender". --Nu-Priest 20:59, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
:::Considering you had to put it in quotations...--Carrion 21:11, 15 September 2010 (EDT)
::::I also think a doctor would know. Besides, she is from the Beast Era. The IDW Generation 1 continuity doesn't have a Beast Era, as far as we know. - Starfield 01:04, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::Her character is retroactively from the Great War/G1. *rethinks-previous-statement* You know, this version of Roulette could easily be a dude, if Jhiaxus or whoever hadn't made him into a her. I forgot about that little detail about IDW continuity's females. --ItsWalky 01:11, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
::::::Heh heh, yeah. It depends on how the "female genome" is spread, I guess. Maybe later Roulette realizes he was meant to be a she all along. (There's probably a weird but interesting story in there somewhere.) -hx 06:35, 16 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::::If we're going to acknowledge Roulette exists in IDW continuity, I think the femmebot with the blatently copied color scheme from AHM #14 should get recognized. --Xaaron 18:41, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
::::::::...yeah, um, I don't think you've seen the two characters side-by-side. It's not the same color scheme. --ItsWalky 19:22, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::::::I accept your challenge! I am now holding Universe #1 and AHM #14 side-by-side. Gold helmet, gray face, blue eyes, gold and gray chestplate, purple and gold on the legs, vehicle kibble on the thighs...uh, yeah. It's not an absolutely slavish recreation, but for comparing a Cybertronian mode to an Earth mode, I'd say it's a damn near perfect match. --Xaaron 20:39, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
::::::::::We've seen Roulette's Cybertronian mode! And the colors are all totally jumbled and in the wrong proportions. I would say the generic's color scheme is reminiscent of Roulette, but is absolutely not in any way Roulette-enough to be considered her. Much in the same way that the dude she's with is so totally not Side Burn, despite folks' claims. --ItsWalky 20:47, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::::::::We saw two modes for Roulette, before and after the Cauldron. Both had your standard Earth-like tires, and none of the Cybertronian sleekness or hover-stylings we've seen on other characters. Even if we had previously seen A Cybertronian mode for her, though, IDW has created numerous NEW Cybertronians designs for characters (Megatron, Ratbat, Blaster, Arcee, etc.). It's a female Cybertronian, in Roulette's basic color scheme, in a role close to Sunstreaker, whom she was connected with at her introduction. We've made positive IDs on far less than that before. Not acknowledging that femmebot as Roulette is one thing, but ignoring her AND saying this unseen, undescribed male Transformer IS her IDW counterpart just seems bizarre. --Xaaron 22:41, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
::::::::::::Maybe if the AHM female had Roulette's head... I mean, if we color a random guy <strike>like Wheeljack</strike> approximately sort of in Wheeljack's colors, does it make him Wheeljack? --ItsWalky 22:44, 17 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::::::::::Wheeljack has possibly the most distinctive head in the history of Transformers, so that comparison doesn't really work -- Roulette is just another face-in-helmet variation. And again, the femmebot's helmet is approximately the same as Roulette's: length-wise cheek panels, "chin-strap", sloped ridge on the forehead, two points on top. Is every detail an artistically perfect recreation? No. But neither were IDW's Cybertronian mode Skram, or Road Rocket, or Primus-knows how many other redesigns. --Xaaron 10:49, 18 September 2010 (EDT)
:::::::::::Maybe someone should just flat-out ask James on the IDW board, he frequents it enough. I just think it's a case similar to "Wing" in Drift # 1. Cool name, randomly chosen. --Nu-Priest 22:33, 17 September 2010 (EDT)

Guys... are you seriously having an argument about bending over backwards to explain why a one-note male character should be the same character as a female from another universe? - Chris McFeely 11:10, 18 September 2010 (EDT)
: I think we stopped talking about the Dude Roulette ages ago. Now we're talking about the girl-who-sorta-looks-like-Roulette-because-she-has-similarish-colors-but-a-different-head-which-we-will-ignore. --ItsWalky 11:25, 18 September 2010 (EDT)
::Basically, I'm arguing that if a femmebot clearly based on Roulette colors/appearance ISN'T her IDW counterpart, then a description-less text-only male TF who happens to share the same name shouldn't be Roulette's counterpart either. Ignoring the AHM femmebot is one thing; recognizing a character even LESS like Roulette in lieu of her is another. There should be a separate page for the dude-bot under Roulette (IDW) or Roulette (male) or something. --Xaaron 12:03, 18 September 2010 (EDT)
:I'm confused-- is this the female from Sunstreaker's story? Because I assumed that was Airrazor. She's standing in front of Sideburn, we see someone I assume is Bulkhead in the same panel, and I assume the orange fellow behind her shoulder on the next page is Survive. -Derik 13:13, 19 September 2010 (EDT)

Roulette (G1)
If we're creating a page on the new Roulette, we create it at Roulette (G1), not Roulette (IDW). Why? Because we disambiguate by Franchise-of-Origin. There are no conflicts between the two Roulettes, franchise-of-origin-wise, so there's absolutely no reason to disambiguate the new Roulette by publisher. --ItsWalky 13:30, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
:I guess I'm confused how this works. I thought we wouldn't use (G1) as an identifier if both characters are from Generation 1 continuity. We differentiated Fasttrack (IDW) and Fasttrack (Scorponok), for instance. --Xaaron 14:08, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
:::"... from Generation 1 continuity" is where you make mistakes. We don't disambiguate by continuity. We disambiguate by franchise. --ItsWalky 15:49, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
::This is the sort of problem you get because G1 is both a franchise and a continuity family. Both characters are from the G1 confam, but only the new guy is from the G1 franchise. Personally, I would avoid using G1 in situations like this one. I'd limit G1 to those characters that truly are "G1", the ones that existed before there was anything else. But, policy is against me (and you). --Khajidha 14:27, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
:::So Fasttrack is like that because both IDW comics and 1987 toys are released under the G1 franchise. Universe is in the G1 continuity, but is a separate franchise label, and therefore "not G1". Like Dropshot (G1) and Dropshot (Universe). Okay...I think i get it. --Xaaron 14:40, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
#You must pick your top five Transformers characters, from any era. They must actually be Transformers; sorry, but no humans, non-Transformer aliens, non-Transformer robots, or anything else of the sort are being considered for the Hall of Fame. Any votes for such entities will not be tabulated. It is the sole discretion of the contest organizers to decide what does and does not count.
#Take your top five list and put it in alphabetical order. Order of preference does not matter. Feel free to denote the character's franchise of origin, although these distinctions may or may not figure into the final results.
#You cannot vote for a specific version of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Dinobot, Ironhide, Ratchet, Soundwave, or Waspinator. They've already been inducted!
##You also can't vote for Grimlock, Jazz or Shockwave. They're being automatically inducted this year!
#However, you CAN vote for Beast Wars Megatron or Optimus Primal! Hasbro considers them separate!
Synopsis
A long time ago, on the planet Caldoon 4, Kup and a team of Autobots are being slaughtered by Overlord. Breaking off from the attack, the giant Decepticon leaves to attend a holoconference with Megatron, who informs him that he, Sixshot and Black Shadow will be the phase-sixers, responsible for finishing planets on the brink of collapse. When Overlord states that he has other ambitions, he is given an ultimatum: obey Megatron or be hunted down and destroyed.

Back in the present, the new Wreckers recruits discuss the arrival of Impactor, and what it means for the mission. While Impactor is being repaired by Perceptor (whereupon an explosive deterrence chip is found in the ex-Wrecker's head), he reveals that he was freed by Snare, who is having qualms about Overlord's sadistic actions. He also rails at Springer for having sent him to Garrus-9 in the first place.

Ultra Magnus intends to make the trip back to Earth with Verity after having dropped off the team, having received a request from Prowl to return. An eavesdropping Verity disagrees with this plan, however. Magnus also informs Springer that according to Prowl, someone or something called Aequitas is currently on Garrus-9.

The Wreckers convene for a mission briefing, and Kup reminisces that Overlord, having chosen to defy Megatron, left the survivors of his team alive back on Caldoon 4. The mission is to hit the prison, free the Autobot prisoners and deal with Aequitas. They plan to break the surrounding force-field by landing two drop pods, both to be controlled by Rotorstorm.

As the appointed time approaches, Guzzle equips Pyro with cerebro-sensitive bullets capable of homing onto a target's brain module. Impactor sits alone in reflection, while Topspin and Twintwist talk about the vicarious perception they are experiencing. Verity leaves a note for Ultra Magnus, while Magnus and Springer consider Ironfist's blackouts and Rotorstorm wallows in self-doubt.

Magnus releases the drop pods above the planet, at which point Verity, now dressed in an exoskeleton, reveals herself as having stowed away aboard one of them. Despite a fierce Decepticon defense, the two teams make a crash landing on the planet. Emerging from the wreckage of her pod, Verity finds herself face to face with Overlord...
It showed up in a Collected Comics book that contained the first four issues, but that was 20 years ago and in a not-widely-sold format. A scan is online somewhere, gotta be. --ItsWalky 16:19, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
** Awesome. Thanks!

About that... has anyone ever speculated what that whole bit with the Dinobots (alluded to in issue #3, and specifically mentioned in issue #4) would have been like if there were no ongoing series? Were these elements always to be included? What would have come of them?--G.B. Blackrock 18:18, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

-I imagine that what would have happened with the Dinobots and Shockwave is... uh... Nothing. Being as the series would have been over. -hx 18:34, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

You miss the point. Why was it included? Continuing a series beyond the limited series was rather uncommon. Were they already thinking that the series would continue by the time issue #3 came out? Or might the comment Ratchet made in that issue have been originally intended to be something else? Is there an "alternate" set of pages to issue 4 (where our current version has the first details about the Dinobots) out there? Although we've not yet seen direct evidence of such, it seems that this is a likely possibility.--G.B. Blackrock 21:43, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

There is indeed an alternate part to US issue 4. To the end, at least. In at least one Australian and one UK printing I can think of, the story ends with the Autobots up and about with Optimus giving a speech. The Shockwave bit? Simply not there. --Ratbat 15:48, 17 March 2006 (AEDST)

Sorry, Ratbat, but that's not what I'm talking about. We already know this, and it's already on the main article for this issue. What I'm talking about are two scenes: one on page 8 of issue #3. At the bottom of the page, when Prime and the other Autobots return to the Ark, Ratchet tells Prime that he "discovered something in the computer's memory banks that [he] think[s Prime] should..." at which point Prime cuts him off. The next issue, on pages 10-11, Huffer fills Prime in on what "Ratchet had tried to tell [him] earlier," and recounts the Ark's memory banks in reference to Shockwave and the Dinobots. Page 12 has a couple of frames at the top of the page in reference to this, as well. Had this series been, as originally intended, only a "4 issue limited series," these references would have never been resolved. Is it reasonable to assume that they were always intended to appear this way, on the unlikely chance that the series would be picked up as an ongoing?--G.B. Blackrock 14:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I think you're right, G.B. - the comics seem to have been written with nore than four issues in mind. But Ratbat has a point too - in the Australian Federal Comic Super Special those references to the Dinobots and Shockwave just aren't there. As someone who only had the Australian version until 1990 (when I finally found a copy of US #4) I was pleasantly surprised to find those Dinobot bits in there - I'd never seen them before.--58.106.146.170 07:35, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

:It's been years since I last saw the Complete Works edition but my recollection is that the Shockwave and Dinobots references are included in them. (The Collected Comics has the standard version, including the cliffhanger.) My best guess is that the original plan was to throw in a few more of the toys and a flashback was reckoned as the best way to show the Dinobots, hence the dialogue in issue 3, then by the time issue 4 was done they knew they were going further. (Alternatively given the length of time an individual issue takes from start to finish, that speech bubble may have been a late in the day addition before seeing print.) ==Cover Artist==
Marvel Age #23 credits Michael Golden with issue #4's cover, but Megatron clearly has TEXEIRA written on his back. Presuming that this signature is Mark Texeira's, I've contacted him to find out if he inked Golden's pencils or he did the cover entirely himself and Marvel Age reported wrong (as I think we determined Golden did do the covers to #2-#3). For now - since the Golden credit is from a secondary source - I've solely credited Texeira until I hear back from him. --Monzo 12:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Offline Decepticons
I think we can allow that the Decepticons finished repairing all their warriors between the damage report scene and the attack on the Ark. Why would Megatron attack the Ark with only 5 guys? -- Repowers 17:41, 3 September 2009 (EDT)

:Over confidence and expectations that the Autobots are too low on fuel to offer much resistance? In issues #5 & #6 Skywarp, Soundwave, Frenzy and Rumble are shown as a distinctly separate group from the others, with a different set of injuries sustained, and these four recover first whilst the others take longer because of the fuel corosion. Also none of the four gets a name check in the battle when all the other intended fighters do. Timrollpickering 22:19, 3 September 2009 (EDT)

::Hrm, that's actually a pretty good point. It just goes against assumptions I've held for like 25 years, heh. I mean, Frenzy's right there on the cover. In any case, I kinda feel like we should note it collectively -- "these guys shouldn't be in the battle" -- rather than panel-by-panel. Maybe we should do the Autobots the same way. -- Repowers 01:11, 4 September 2009 (EDT)
MASH reference?
I noticed in that Sparkplug's flashback to the Korean war, his army buddy says they were heading to the 4067th MASH unit. The long-running TV show MASH was based around the 4077th unit. Does anyone think this might be a nod to the series (and if so, is it worth adding to the Items of Note?), or is it more likely to be just a coincidence? The Autobots make a desperate gamble to defeat the Decepticons.

Synopsis
Some of the Autobots accuse Sparkplug of betraying them by giving the Decepticons the fuel conversion they needed. Panicked, Sparkplug and his son attempt to escape, but when Jazz blocks their path with a wall of flame, Sparkplug suffers a heart attack. He is rushed to the hospital by Ratchet.

Huffer tells Optimus about a discovery he made in the Ark's memory banks: Just after the ship crashed, its barely functional computers detected the Decepticon Shockwave arriving on Earth in pursuit. With the last of its power, the Ark modified five Autobot warriors to combat him, thus creating the Dinobots. They traveled in a shuttle to the Savage Land to confront Shockwave, at which point contact was lost. Huffer has Ratchet dispatch a probe to search for the lost Dinobots.

At the hospital, Sparkplug undergoes emergency treatment and dreams of his Army service in Korea, where he was forced to repair North Korean vehicles. He further recalls sabotaging those vehicles...

With no new fuel sources forthcoming, the remaining Autobots are forced to make a desperate gamble to fight the Decepticons one last time. All the Autobots sacrifice their remaining fuel resources to Optimus Prime, Huffer, Ironhide, Bluestreak and Mirage. These five prepare to fight the Decepticons within the volcano that the Ark has crashed into, as the Decepticons arrive to destroy the Autobots once and for all.

In the Savage Land, Huffer's probe has found something and starts to dig it out—until a giant purple hand crushes it...

Although the Decepticons begin to win the battle by virtue of their greater numbers, at the moment of apparent victory, the Decepticons all fall, writhing in internal agony. As he reveals to Buster at the hospital, Sparkplug had corrupted the fuel he provided to the Decepticons, and they are now poisoned. Optimus Prime proclaims the debt that they, and the entire world, owe to Sparkplug Witwicky.

But suddenly, a gigantic blast from above knocks out all the Autobot troops... and Shockwave stands supreme!

"NOT the end..."
(Issue #1 pretty clearly indicated that the only Decepticons on Earth are the ten introduced in that issue, a point even more explicitly stated by Shockwave in the next issue.) If that's supposed to be Frenzy on one of the repair beds, he's completely off-model.
* Page 14: Brawn is shown among the active Autobots, even though he was not among those recharged for the final fight. Frenzy and Rumble are shown as active despite page 9 stating they had been knocked out of action last issue. The next issue reinforces their injury status.
And Skywarp, Rumble and Soundwave are among the Decepticons attacking, despite being reported as out of action nine pages earlier.
* Advertised as part 4 in a 4-issue limited series, but the ending and letter column both make clear that issue #5 of what was now an ongoing was forthcoming.
* The narrative box makes a quick reference to the World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front: "Meanwhile, all's quiet on the Decepticon front..."
* According to a text box in the letter column, Transformers #5 was originally going to be drawn by the team of "Vince Giarrano, penciling superstar-in-the-making" and "Brad Joyce, inker extraordinare". This did not come to pass, and while Joyce did eventually ink issue #10, Giarrano would never work on the series.
* Jetfire's original character model (based on the Macross Valkyrie) appears in the first panel of the second page, but he is miscolored and partially obscured by Huffer's arm.
* An alternate ending was scripted and drawn for a UK reprint of issue #4 in Transformers: The Complete Works, Volume 2; in this version, Shockwave never strikes, and the series ends with Optimus Prime declaring the Decepticons defeated once and for all. Some have theorised that this ending was created by the US comics in case the series failed to progress past issue #4. However, the art on these panels, particularly a closeup of Optimus Prime's face, in the very final panel, is markedly different to Springer's so it seems much more likely that this version was simply drawn for the UK printing by one of their own artists.
* A second alternate ending was published in the Federal Comics Super Special edition. It expands the second panel of the penultimate page (or, the second panel from the link within the previous note) into a final splash page, eliminating the other panels entirely. Additionally, any page that mentioned the Shockwave subplot was dropped.

Shafau: typo - 'reare' -> 'rare'

Gang-molding is the practice of using the same plastic mold to simultaneously manufacture different parts for different toys.

Multiple large Transformers toys are not typically gang-molded; the procedure is normally used either for a single large toy and a smaller one that is associated with it, such as a Headmaster and its head component or a Bulk and its partner Mini-Con, or for several smaller toys, such as a Mini-Con team. Sometimes gang-molded toys are sold together, as in these cases, but there have been instances of toys that were sold separately having parts from the same molds, such as the Axelerators Skram and Windbreaker, or either set of Go-Bots molds.

In most cases, producing one of several toys that are gang-molded together will automatically result in some or all of the parts for the other toys being produced as well. This is why all the toys in certain types of groups tend to get redecoed at about the same time--making a toy from Armada Firebot's mold, such as Anti-Blaze, will also create similarly colored versions of Makeshift and Prowl (in Anti-Blaze's case, Scythe and Checkpoint respectively).

Not all toys that are packaged together are gang-molded. The three members of the Clear Skies Mini-Con Team, for example, are molded independently of each other.

In some rare instances, when Hasbro and Takara plan a retool of a toy even before starting production of the original version, they may also cast the original parts and the new parts from the same mold. The usused parts will the be dumped or recycled. One of the most well-known examples of this procedure is Cybertron Scrapmetal, whose head was produced on the same sprue as the Cobybot head, even though the latter was originally only used by Takara.

Whales die and Optimus Prime has an epileptic seizure.

Synopsis
The Gulf of Alaska, 5.51 A.M. local time. An fishing boat, working for an American company named Concord Fisheries, is about two days ahead of its quota, and the crew is wondering whether they should dock early and unload, or try to continue their lucky streak. The boat's captain, meanwhile, is distracted and keeps thinking about his family.

Suddenly, the boat hits an obstacle. As the captain orders a code red, the crew realizes they have run across at leas a dozen dead whales, each of them with a shard of metal sticking out of its back. The crew proceeds to lift some of the whales onboard to examine their bodies and realizes that their flesh looks burnt, as if they had been torched. Eventually they notice a shard of metal sticking out of one of the bodies. Upon realizing that one of them sports an Autobot insignia, the captain decides to call the Coast Guard.

Meanwhile, Optimus Prime is standing on a hilltop in the desert, staring at an electric storm at the horizon. Spike climbs up to talk to him, joking about getting older. Prime isn't listening, however, as he is having an inexplicable feeling that a huge threat for the Autobots, unlike anything they ever encountered before, is headed their way. Suddenly Prime has a seizure, loses his balance and falls off the hill, crashing onto the ground.

Some time later, back in the Gulf of Alaska, at 8:33 P.M. local time, a Coast Guard boat has arrived, and the crew starts questioning the fishing crew, who deny having seen anything out of the ordinary until the collision. The Coast Guard captain decides to send divers down to investigate. Although the captain of the fishing boat objects the use of live divers, the Coast Guard captain insists that clearance for mech use takes too long, and he wants to find out what's going on underwater as soon as possible. As the three divers reach 140 feet, they discover a large spaceship sporting a huge Autobot insignia. One of the divers calls the Coast Guard captain via radio, asking for assistance.
Publication
This eight-page story has never been published as an individual issue. A preview was made available online in December 2002, lacking all text captions and speech bubbles. The story was published in the Prime Directive trade paperback collection which came out the same month, and is also included in the reprint by IDW Publishing.

Notes
*This story appears to be setting up Chris Sarracini's originally intended plot for the (at that point still unnamed) second Generation 1 mini-series, which was hinted in a Wizard's Edge article and would have featured Omega Supreme and Unicron. When Sarracini was replaced by <strike>James McDonough</strike> Brad Mick as the writer of the second Generation 1 mini, that story direction was dropped and replaced by an entirely new plot. Therefore, this preview is pretty much pointless in retrospect. The solitary vestigial reference to this preview in the finished War and Peace mini-series is in the text prologue printed on the inside cover of the first issue, noting that Prime's vision (the fit he suffers in this story) has brought the Autobots to the Arctic, but the ship is never mentioned, essentially "replaced" with a stasis capsule containing Scourge.
**The lingering mystery of the ship would not be resolved until over a year later, in issue #5 of Dreamwave's ongoing Generation One series, wherein it was revealed to be the ship that brought Jetfire and Omega Supreme to Earth, and the origin point for Scourge's capsule.
*The fishing crew appears to suffer from collective sight impairment. First they fail to notice an area filled with dead whales until they literally bump into them. And then they fail to notice the giant shards of metal sticking out of their bodies until they have lifted them on board. Considering they're steering through an area full of icebergs, one wonders how they have managed not to bump into one of them yet.

Errors
*When Optimus Prime is having his seizure, Spike appears to be looking into the wrong direction when he asks him what is wrong, based on both their relative position in the previous panel and the direction of the pointer of Prime's speech bubble.
*Prime falls off the hill head first, with the front side of his body facing the hill, yet he somehow manages to hit the ground flat, with the front side of his body facing the ground.
I was rereading this issue today, and being the dweeb that I am, I noticed that the panel where Bumblebee's trying to locate Skywarp ("Think you're so clever, don'tcha?") there's a hidden message in the binary there. The very top line reads "1984.1987.I.D.W.05.10", and the vertical column down the side reads either "fn!" or "fo!" followed by the word "michelle".
