While fleeing from [[Galvatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Galvatron]]'s [[Decepticon]]s, [[Hot Rod (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Rodimus Prime]] and his [[Autobot]]s found refuge inside an [[Autobot Mausoleum|Autobot funeral barge]], where [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]] stumbled upon the reanimated form of [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]]. Though most of the Autobots did not believe Daniel's story, Rodimus was obsessed with Optimus's memory, and tracked him down. After finding Optimus seemingly still alive, Rodimus happily handed over the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. However, things were not as they appeared, and Optimus immediately turned on them, left them to die in the funeral barge and escaped in a ship he had built.

Upon Optimus' return to Cybertron, he claimed that Rodimus and his crew had died due to a cruel [[Quintesson]] trick, and commanded every single Autobot to help him strike back. This was just what the Quintessons had orchestrated from the beginning, having reanimated the Autobots' former leader solely for the purpose of leading the [[Autobot fleet]] into a deadly trap. Now without the Matrix, Hot Rod and his crew had managed to escape, and Hot Rod battled Optimus one-on-one in an attempt to reclaim the Matrix and get to the bottom of this deception. Thanks to the energies of the Matrix, Optimus eventually overrode the Quintessons' coding, properly returning to life whereupon he returned the Matrix to Rodimus, once again gave him his blessing, and the Autobots retreated. After stealing dead bodies from medical universities, [[Dauros]] and [[Gilmer]] infused them with evil energy from [[Devil Z]]. These [[human]] zombies (in matching Decepticon jumpsuits) had begun to lay siege to a local city when [[Lander]], who was nearby, changed into his [[Pretender]] form and battled them. However, the zombies began to disappear in a flash of light after they had run out of energy.

The Decepticons realized that they needed to infuse life energy from living humans into the zombies to avoid this problem. After kidnapping several human boys, the Autobot Pretenders came to the rescue and befriended one of the boys, [[Cab (human)|Cab]], who joined their team. {{storylink|Terror! Megatron, to whom the corpse of Starscream was being delivered, required Ratchet to repair him, so the former Decepticon leader sent the [[Micromaster]] [[Sports Car Patrol]] to trick Ratchet into returning with them to Cybertron. To do this, [[Blackjack (G1)|Blackjack]] and his fellow Micromasters made Ratchet's hallucination real, animating Ratchet's patients. However, this began to backfire when Ratchet decided to give himself up to his accusers. Not content with the idea of soldiers with the ability to rebel however, Megatron immediately proceeded to lobotomize the newly resurrected Transformers, destroying their higher brain functions while still retaining the ability to follow orders, although clumsily. The lobotomized Decepticons (who were also joined by resurrected and similarly lobotomized Autobots) sported crude metal clamps over their heads due to their surgeries, and were incapable of maintaining their own bodies as Megatron ruthlessly ravaged the Earth. Megatron subjugated [[Starscream (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Starscream]] to the same treatment, although the Seeker was allowed to retain a small part of his consciousness as a punishment, unable to react to the horrors he experienced. When [[Kup (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Kup]] and the [[Wrecker]]s crashlanded on Earth in their escape pods, Megatron ordered his zombie army to track them down. {{storylink|Loose Ends, Part 2}}

After [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], [[Skywarp (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Skywarp]] and [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] brought in the unconscious Kup, Megatron used him as bait to lure in the other Wreckers then ordered the zombies to ambush them. [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] shot down [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]], [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] and [[Buzzsaw (G1)|Buzzsaw]] disabled [[Sandstorm (G1)|Sandstorm]] and Starscream almost killed [[Springer (G1)|Springer]], earning himself a rebuke from Megatron who was saving that pleasure for himself. The army of "Ex-Bots" charged into battle against the detachment of Autobots [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] had brought with him from Cybertron, but when Ratchet, Megatron and [[Aunty|Auntie]] were more-or-less simultaneously taken out by Kup, Prime and [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Circuit Smasher]] respectively, the signal reanimating and controlling the zombies was shut off and they dropped to the ground, inactive. {{storylink|Loose Ends, Part 5}}

[[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]], [[Wheeljack (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Wheeljack]], [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] and [[Smokescreen (G1)|Smokescreen]] were tasked with gathering the fallen zombies and throwing them into a large pit where [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Ultra Magnus]] could vaporise them from orbit to be sure. The only survivor was Starscream, thanks to the glimmer of consciousness Megatron had left him with. {{storylink|Natural Selection, Part One}} As it turns out, Starscream was still very much alive, and Megatron had merely repressed all but that little glimmer of consciousness with mental blocks—blocks that were loosened by [[Shockwave (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Shockwave]], whom Megatron had plugged into the Ark in order to gain control of Auntie. After the defeat of [[Megatron (BW)/Beast Wars cartoon continuity|Megatron]] and the [[Maximal]]s' takeover of the [[Grand Mal]], [[Silverbolt (Fuzor)|Silverbolt]] and [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] were investigating the fields of [[spark]]less Transformer bodies when they were attacked by a zombie-like creature. A seemingly-invincible corpse battled them. Blackarachnia attempted to use her energo-web attacks, but it merely absorbed them. Until, finally, after Blackarachnia threw another corpse's power core at it, the zombie collapsed. A mysterious energy ball lifted from the zombie, and it disappeared through a grate in the ground.

The energy ball appeared next in the [[technorganic orchard]] that [[Rattrap (BW)|Rattrap]] and [[Botanica (BM)|Botanica]] were tending, bringing life to a deactivated [[Cycle Drone]]. Botanica attempted to use her energy weapon powers against it, but like Blackarachnia's energo-webs, it merely absorbed her attack. After being expelled too from this body, it fled to the surface into a deactivated [[Aero Drone]], where it attacked [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]], [[Obsidian (BM)|Obsidian]], and [[Strika (BM)|Strika]]. Nightscream tried a different approach of "draining" the creature of its power, but it drained Nightscream's own power from him. The Maximals began to see a pattern in the zombies' attacks, and regrouped inside the Grand Mal, which seemed to be its target. Finally, Rattrap had an epiphany, realized what was going on, and captured the energy ball inside a [[Diagnostic Drone]]. The energy ball was actually the polarized spark of Megatron. As [[Optimus Primal (BW)|Optimus Primal]]'s corpse floated in [[Earth]]'s orbit following his sacrifice at the hands of the [[Vok|aliens]]' [[Planet Buster]], [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] realized true strength was not only in numbers (fashioning himself an army of drones), but also in retrieving Primal's remains, reassembling it, and reanimating it as a zombie. Upon initial activation, the zombie asserted its dominance over Megatron's new army of drones.

Thankfully, before Megatron and [[Tarantulas (BW)|Tarantulas]] could make the process permanent, the [[Maximal]]s showed up and [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] injected Primal's [[Spark]] (which he had retrieved from [[unspace|transwarp space]]) into his old body. As an amnesiac [[Optimus Primal (BW)/Beast Wars cartoon continuity|Optimus Primal]] and [[Megatron (BW)/Beast Wars cartoon continuity|Megatron]] moved through the temple they'd awoken in, reality shifted around them and they found themselves on a decayed world. They were soon swarmed by reanimated fallen robots who would only chant "spark" as they sought to consume the pair's life force, however the zombies were no match for the pair and were soon ripped apart. {{storylink|The Mysterious Temple in Space}}

They only came at night, when the suns would stop filtering through the planet's beautiful, indigenous crystals, creating such beautiful music... Kup could not allow Them to take the music away from him, and even though his buddy [[Outback (G1)|Outback]], the only other survivor of Kup's crew, refused to help him, Kup was able to beat back every single last one of Them every single night when they'd come for him.

What Kup didn't know is that they were not zombies, but [[Autobot]]s sent in to rescue him. The antique [[anti-rad armor]] they wore to protect themselves from the extreme radiation caused by the crystals also disguised their identities to Kup, who was suffering hallucinations at the hand of the radiation. A few years later, [[Galvatron (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Galvatron]] found a strange mass of real zombies—human and robot—frozen together near an anomaly in space. He brought the mass aboard to study but when they thawed, the zombies attacked Galvatron's crew, infecting some of his [[Sweep (G1)|Sweeps]]. Zombie leader [[Britt]], now in robotic form, used powers of suggestion to trick the Cybertronians into thinking she was a member of their crew named Bayonet, while she actually sabotaged the engines to take the ship to [[Earth]]. {{storylink|The Transformers: Infestation issue 1|The Transformers: Infestation #1}} When Kup was infected by the zombie virus, Britt gained the knowledge of Cybertron's history and technology, which would let her send the virus back in time and infect Cybertron during its [[Golden Age]]. '''Scraplets''' are alleged to be the deadliest disease known to mechanical lifeforms in the entire galaxy. It is a complicated form of alien parasite, which lives solely to eat, reproduce, and eat some more.

Scraplets have evolved to resemble pink and blue nuts and bolts, washers and screws. However, when brought into contact with mechanical life, Scraplets instantly and painfully embed themselves into the skin of said creature and rapidly begin to self-replicate. The [[living metal]] around a Scraplet quickly corrodes, decaying and cracking away as the embedded Scraplet feasts. This process is painful and inevitably fatal for the infected robot. In a matter of hours, a single Scraplet can reproduce enough to completely infest an average-sized Cybertronian to the point of physical breakdown.

Scraplets are capable of transforming into vaguely humanoid robotic configurations, each capable of elementary speech and reasoning abilities. There are many different forms of humanoid Scraplet; the number of limbs, eyes, fangs, and claws vary, though they are all quite tiny by Transformer standards. They use the locomotion afforded by this mode to spread out from a dead or dying host and infect mechanoids whom they might not otherwise be able to come in contact with.

A mass of Scraplets can also merge into a combined humanoid form. In this form they have enormous strength and agility and a primitive group consciousness. However, this form also carries with it some limitations, as they present a larger target and become vulnerable to conventional assault.

Their sense of vision seems to be based on a combination of heat-seeking and metal-detection which is primarily geared towards identifying edible silicon-based life-forms. Carbon-based life-forms are all but invisible to the Scraplet, and usually of no interest.

It is said that there is [[Water|a rare chemical of legend that can kill a Scraplet]], but this is doubtful.

Emerging from warp space in Earth's [[Solar System]], the pilot exited the craft to perform some necessary repairs. As he did, the ship passed through what seemed to be a cloud of space dust. The "dust" rapidly infected the pilot, who lost control of the ship as it crashed on Earth.

Not hearing back from the pilot, Ratbat sent the Decepticon [[Triple Changer]]s to investigate. They found the stricken pilot near the crashed ship, but didn't get very far in interrogating him about his failure before they too were infected. When Blaster and Goldbug arrived, Blaster landed in the crater and was soon infected as well. The freighter pilot survived long enough to warn [[Bumblebee (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Goldbug]] about the infection, just before his head fell off. The Scraplets charged toward the tasty-looking Goldbug, who was defended by his human friend [[Charlie Fong]]. But as the two headed off to try and find a cure, Goldbug hesitated, reluctant to abandon Blaster, and he too was infected. Hours later, the infection was so widespread that Goldbug couldn't continue driving. {{storylink|Crater Critters}}

Made aware of the infection by [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], Ratbat decided to take decisive action to contain it. Rather than risk more Decepticon lives, he captured [[Throttlebot|five Autobots]] and sent them to Earth. His mission for them: use vats of acid spray to destroy all infected Transformers on the planet, Autobot and Decepticon alike!

Charlie Fong pushed Goldbug through the desert to a service station, where the appalled attendants offered him a glass of water. Charlie was shocked when he spilled some on Goldbug to see the Scraplets die and fall off. Holy crap, pinball wizard and a miracle cure: ''water!!''

Before Charlie could grab a hose to "wash his car", the attendants restrained him, thinking he was delusional. Two of the Throttlebots arrived just then, regretfully attempting to destroy Goldbug; only Charlie's interference saved him, as he demonstrated the miracle cure. Satisfied, [[Rollbar (G1)|Rollbar]] and [[Wideload (G1)|Wide Load]] stood by while Charlie hosed down Goldbug, curing him.

Goldbug and company returned to the crash site with two tankers of water to save Blaster, but couldn't do so without also curing the three Decepticons. Before they could take action, thousands of the Scraplets combined into a muscular mauve giant, bashing the weaponless Throttlebots around. Goldbug cured the Decepticons, who used their firepower to bring down the giant, which Blaster then destroyed with one of the acid vats. The remaining water was used to remove the Scraplets which infected the Throttlebots during the battle, and the outbreak on Earth was at an end. {{storylink|The Cure!}}

However, circumstances forced Whirl to go and flush the pseudo-protoform out an airlock, at which point the Scraplets altered their form to appeal to him specifically, forming a face of a singular (red) optic and claws for hands. Once again taken in, Whirl hid them inside himself, starving his own spark of energy to make room for them. Raf smashed it, but Ratchet guessed that there would surely be more Scraplets around. His fear was confirmed when they found the empty container, and he sent Bulkhead, [[Miko Nakadai|Miko]], Raf, and Bumblebee to hunt them down while he tried to repair the Scraplets' damage with [[Jack Darby|Jack]] watching his back. The Scraplets ambushed Bulkhead and Bumblebee and a swarm of them flew down from the ceiling and began chewing on Ratchet. Jack discovered that by using a fire extinguisher, one could freeze the Scraplets to death.

The creatures were initially fended off by the three children, who were not considered food by the Scraplets. The Scraplets had done considerable damage to many systems, and it was up to the children to fix them. They fixed the Energon supply cable that fed the [[GroundBridge]], bringing it back online. The Autobots formulated a plan to both get rid of the Scraplets, and bring back [[Optimus Prime (WFC)|Optimus]] and [[Arcee (WFC)|Arcee]], who were stranded in the Arctic. Activating the now operational GroundBridge, Bulkhead decided to act as bait to draw the scraplets through. Once through, the scraplets darted at Optimus and Arcee, and became frozen before they could reach them. {{storylink|Scrapheap (episode)|Scrapheap}} The massive damage they'd done to the base continued to plague the ground bridge's systems for some time. {{storylink|Con Job}}

There were still plenty of Scraplets on the dead Cybertron. A sizable cluster of them managed to find their way into the passageway beneath [[Kaon (polity)|Kaon]] that led to [[Vector Sigma]]. When Jack passed through to Vector Sigma, the Scraplets followed him. While they had no interest in him, once the mega computer started charging [[Key to Vector Sigma|the Key]], the Scraplets started feasting on the empowered access board. Despite Jack's attempts to remove them, the Scraplets proved too many. Fortunately, an [[Insecticon (WFC)|Insecticon]] had also followed Jack down the passageway, but stopped short when it saw the infestation of Scraplets, showing that it too was afraid of them. Jack quickly used this to his advantage by dislodging a live Scraplet and throwing it at the giant insect. Sensing a living Cybertronian, the scraplets quickly went to town on the Insecticon. In a matter of seconds, the Scraplets chewed through the Decepticon sentry's limbs, causing it to fall over into the deep pit below. A while ago, a meteor landed on Earth with chunks of iron ore all around. Unfortunately, this meteor also housed Scraplets, which began eating at the natural metals in the impact crater. They would only be discovered several years later, when [[Boulder (RB)|Boulder]] led a class of Rescue Bot recruits on a field trip to the crater. Attacking the class upon their intrusion of their burrows, the recruits were sealed in a cave to keep them safe, though a juvenile Scraplet was sealed with them. The rest were trapped by Boulder, Heatwave and Cody Burns in an ice cream truck lined with fiberglass. The recruits eventually made it out with the young Scraplet, and the entire species was rocketed to a moon with enough iron ore to last them a lifetime. {{storylink|Metal Munchers}}

Boulder obtained five Scraplets and, believing they could be trained to work with bots, assigned the recruits the task of doing so. The recruits were skeptical but began attempting to train the critters, even assigning them names, however the volotile nature of the Scraplets made them hard to control. Well and truly off his rocker, Starscream claimed the Scraplets were the reborn [[spark]]s of ancient Cybertronian legends such as [[Zeta Prime (Cyberverse)|Zeta Prime]], [[Solus Prime]], and the noble [[The Fallen|Megatronus]]. When [[Slipstream (Cyberverse)|Slisptream]] attempted to flee, the Scraplets lunged at her, one of them managing to cripple her arm, but she still managed to turn to jet mode and escape. {{storylink|Parley}}

Starscream later led a group of his children to invade the [[Nemesis (Cyberverse)|''Nemesis'']], the Scraplets sucking dry the [[energon]] of Starscream's former comrades, though [[Megatron (Cyberverse)|Megatron]] was able to send a distress signal that brought the Autobots to his warship, only to find the sheer number of Scraplets overwhelming. When [[Optimus Prime (Cyberverse)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Windblade (Cyberverse)|Windblade]] confronted Starscream on the flagship's bridge, the Seeker claimed that one of the Scraplets was [[Alpha Trion (Cyberverse)|Alpha Trion]] who wanted the [[Matrix of Leadership]] back. Though the Scraplets managed to open the Prime's chest and expose the talisman, they were defeated when [[Cheetor (Cyberverse)|Cheetor]], who denounced the Scarplets as sparkless beasts, made physical contact with the AllSpark, the energy wave deactivating them and restoring their victims. {{storylink|Starscream's Children}}

Following this, Starscream captured Cheetor to try and absorb his mystical powers. Needing to test this process, Starscream began transferring [[Bumblebee (Cyberverse)|Bumblebee]]'s spark into a Scraplet. Cheetor saved his friend by dousing the [[Seeker (Cyberverse)|Seekers]] in liquid energon, the Scraplets' ravenous appetite leading them to attack their allies. One Scraplet managed to follow the Autobots back to the [[Ark (Cyberverse)|''Ark'']], being turned over to [[Wheeljack (Cyberverse)|Wheeljack]] for study. {{storylink|Spotted}}

Using his specimen, Wheeljack attempted to use its homing instincts to track down the other Scraplets only for it to run into [[Shockwave (Cyberverse)|Shockwave]]'s specimen. The similar idea led to Shockwave kidnapping Wheeljack in a failed attempt to combine their intellect and resources to track down Starscream, but it did provide Shockwave with Wheeljack's [[drone controller]], giving the Decepticons a way to gain control of the Scraplet horde. [[Bludgeon (Cyberverse)|Bludgeon]] made his own studies into Scraplet biology and weaknesses, hacking a gaggle of them to pieces outside the ''Nemesis''. {{storylink|Secret Science}}

The Scraplets were later brought to the AllSpark cavern by Starscream to help him fight off the Autobots and Decepticons that had come to procure the relic. However, during the battle, the Seeker was overpowered and, thus, lost control over the Scraplets. The now-feral beings, despite getting briefly controlled by Shockwave's devices, were presumably destroyed in a cave-in resulting from the aforementioned skirmish. {{storylink|I Am The Allspark}}
