After releasing a doomsday weapon, Optimus Primal must face the consequences of his actions.

Synopsis
The storm continues to rage, as Optimus Primal (controlling the lethal Plasma Energy Chamber) and Megatron (wielding the deadly Key to Vector Sigma) fight, pushing their energies back and forth.

Optimus dissolves and finds himself in the Matrix again, seeing a vision of Cybertron destroyed. He lashes out and blames Megatron, who takes no credit. Cybertron is doomed not because of Megatron's actions, but because of Primal. Suddenly, Optimus finds himself back on prehistoric Earth, where he's attacked by a green-eyed copy of himself. The doppelgänger scolds Primal for his fanatical behavior and pushes him off a cliff, sending him plummeting back into space.

Faces come and go, and he finds himself being blamed by his Maximals, who tell him that he's failed them. Primal realizes that he must make his own decisions, not merely follow the commands of the Oracle. The Oracle acknowledges this fact, but tells him that his fate still lies with him.

The arrival of another old friend, Rhinox, comforts him. Rhinox acknowledges his misdeeds as Tankor, and tells his old friend that he chooses to stay in the Matrix. Primal shoots through another tunnel where the faces of Transformers he has yet to encounter flash before him and finds himself back in the heated battle. Taking control of both energies, he redirects them back into the Matrix itself. The remaining Maximals reawaken, back in their techno-organic bodies and free of the Key's energies.

With Megatron gone and the Vehicons rendered inert, the Maximals are the only active Cybertronians on the planet. Finding one another, the surviving Maximals head to the throne room in the Citadel, only to find the bodies of their former friends—and foes. Megatron's body crumbles to dust, leaving only his control-shell. When Rattrap touches the inert body of Tankor, it falls to pieces. Cheetor looks at Optimus Primal's flattened body, lamenting the fallen "Big Bot". Unsympathetic, Nightscream says that Cheetor only ever wanted him out of the way. Cheetor tells Nightscream off, but reluctantly takes control anyway.

Outside, Rattrap plugs into Cybertron's system, only to find that the planet is, in fact, brain-dead. But things change when Jetstorm and Thrust show up, and the Maximals and Vehicons prepare for another fight. Cheetor comes between them, telling them that the war is over, while Blackarachnia invites Jetstorm onto their side. It's not a suggestion that the two generals take kindly to, and another brief fight breaks out before Blackarachnia puts a stop to it. The two Vehicon generals leave.

Hoping to consult the Oracle like Optimus once had, the Maximals make the trip underground to the Oracle's chamber. However, the foursome find Optimus Primal inside the Oracle. Communicating with them via the supercomputer, he asks that the Maximals forgive his zealotry and near-genocidal actions. Rattrap protests, as "there is nothing to forgive". Back in the void, Optimus sees the collective sparks of Cybertron past, present, and future, inviting him into the Transformer afterlife: the Matrix. As he floats, Optimus has an epiphany: the Oracle never intended to have organic life replace Cybertron's technology, but to create a technorganic balance of organic and machine, just as the Oracle did when it reformatted the Maximals. Optimus happily acknowledges that he is ready to join the Matrix... but not today.

Optimus Primal steps out into real-space again, and the Oracle tells him that it has taught him everything, and that he must make his own way in his mission. A new orchard of technorganic plants grows around them as Optimus explains their new quest to the Maximals.

The Maximals head above ground, hoping to find and liberate Megatron's stockpile of sparks... only to find themselves face-to-giant-face with an enormous vessel bearing the likeness of Megatron!
Without your leadership, we'd have all gone offline when we first hit this planet. Without your guidance, we'd would've never mastered transforming in these technorganic bodies. And without your vision, Cybertron will never truly be restored."
:—The Maximals try to convince Optimus to return from the Matrix.

"But the Matrix never intended for the organic to replace the technological. It didn't want us to fight a war, but to create a balance. the technorganic balance between the machine and the organic. Yes, I am ready to join the Matrix, but not today."
:—Optimus realises he does actually have something to live for.

"Congratulations, Optimus Primal. You have passed your greatest test by asserting your own free will, the very thing that makes you more than a mere machine. Clearly there is nothing left to teach you. The time has come for you to seize your own destiny."
:—The Oracle gives Optimus a passing grade.

Notes
Animation or technical errors
* Optimus's dead body is... strange-looking. Presumably, it's supposed to look as if his body has crumbled to ash, but the model quality means that it looks like it's been cartoonishly flattened.
* During the skirmish between the Generals and the Maximals, Rattrap laughs nervously without moving his face.

Continuity errors
* The recap at the start of this episode concludes with Optimus Primal's hand disintegrating and him insisting that "if this is the will of the Matrix, then so be it". However, the cliffhanger simply ended with Optimus Primal looking on as his hand disintegrated.
* Just as in "Apocalypse", Optimus claims that the Beast Wars on Earth were the Matrix's way of obtaining organic material. Since it was Megatron who decided to go there, then either Optimus is reading too much into it or the Matrix has been giving Megatron some nudges...

Continuity notes
* Among Optimus's visions are the heads of the Maximals in Beast Mode, who cycle through all of their previous bodies that appeared in Beast Wars (albeit, using the miscolored versions of Cheetor's, Rattrap's, and Blackarachnia's pre-Transmetal forms that were used in "The Reformatting"). Nightscream also briefly flashes into his brown, pre-Technorganic Beast Mode.
* There's a lot of blink-and-you'll miss it foreshadowing in Optimus Primal's vision! As he returns to Megatron's chamber, he experiences visions of characters who will appear in season two
* When Optimus redirects the dueling energies into the Oracle, you can briefly see Nightscream's old hiding place. The fruit tree has apparently regrown.
* As the four surviving Maximals climb down to the Oracle, the sequence is deliberately set up to evoke their original trip to the Oracle, as seen in "The Reformatting".
* Similarly, Optimus's re-emergence from the Oracle is framed to resemble his original emergence from the Matrix in the same episode, complete with a disbelieving "Big Bot?" from Cheetor.
* Optimus experiences a vision of a flower during his trip, the same kind that appeared in "The Reformatting".
* There are a lot of clips from previous episodes interspersed throughout the episode. As the Maximals recount how Optimus has helped them over the course of the Spark War, there are clips from "The Reformatting", "Forbidden Fruit", and "The Weak Component". Later, as Optimus remembers the Beast Wars, his memories are represented by clips from the Beast Wars episodes "Coming of the Fuzors (Part 1)", "Cutting Edge", "Feral Scream Part 1", "Feral Scream Part 2", and "Nemesis Part 2".

Transformers references
Real-world references
* Jetstorm mentions that they just got rid of the "old boss" and aren't keen on working for "the new boss", riffing on lyrics from The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Trivia
*Season 2 sees the Maximals drop the "I am transformed" mantra that usually accompanied their transformations.
*Rhinox must remain in the Matrix forever. Until he doesn't. Except when he gets killed even deader. (Multiple continuities are fun, kids!) Either way, in-show, this is the last appearance of Rhinox/Tankor.
*Amusingly, Blackarachnia tells Jetstorm right in his face, "You don't want to be Silverbolt again? Fine. I won't force you." Oh, really?
:** During the opening chat of the episode, each Maximal pronounced their names in reverse, resulting in Ybonco for Convoy. Cheetor found that hilarious as it sounds like 疣ん子(ibonko, literally meaning son o' wart), and all Maximals bursted into laughter while Optimus shouts loudly for his narration for the beginning of the episode.

Escaping from strange new foes and unable to transform, the four surviving Maximals encounter a mysterious supercomputer which remakes them into a new kind of Transformer.

Synopsis
On the metal-and-steel planet of Cybertron, a single flower bizarrely grows out of a tear in the street. Suddenly, a gorilla races past, pursued by a horde of Tank Drones. In an even stranger vein, Primal has lost his Transmetal properties and is now in his original furry body. After a couple minutes of cat-and-mouse, Optimus decides to face them down and prepares to Maximize. But his beast mode parts refuse to move and he screams in pain as he is tortured by electrical shocks.

Suddenly, his eyes glow and he receives a strange signal from an alien source. He sees a monorail vehicle nearby and swings away from the drones, and finds another one of his missing comrades—Rattrap. Rattrap explains that he has had a lot of trouble transforming as well and has no memory of returning to Cybertron after the end of the Beast Wars and the capture of Megatron. They escape from the transport after the drones blow it to pieces and Rattrap tries to use his command code repeatedly, resulting in nothing but shocks and pain.

Fortunately, Cheetor leaps out of nowhere, covering the eyes of one of the drones. Its head spins wildly, and it takes pot shots, destroying one of its counterparts. Cheetor is hoping to find a CR chamber and use it to eliminate the transformation lock virus that plagues them all. Rattrap points out that Cybertron seems to have changed a lot in their absence. But there is no time to discuss matters, as new tank drones are readying a renewed assault. Plunging into a hole, the Maximals bounce on a web. It is Blackarachnia, the Predacon-turned-Maximal, unable to convert and stuck in her organic body.

Optimus Primal decides that the best course of action is to head deeper underground, where the Vehicon drones have failed to look. Using the webs of Blackarachnia, they head deeper into the bowels of Cybertron, passing layers and layers of cities as they descend. Brushed metal and steel give way to rusting iron, which gives way to stone. Eventually, too weak to climb, they fall, plunging into complete darkness. Determined not to die, Primal throws a piece of scrap metal, shattering some kind of covering and awakening the supercomputer called the Oracle. A wall of flames springs up. Undaunted by the seeming threat, Optimus walks straight through them, revealing the hologram. The Oracle speaks to Primal, taking him into the bowels of the Matrix.

Granted visions that he could not yet understand, he sees images of an Earth-like planet transformed into a purely mechanical world. Concluding with the mysterious statement that "the seeds of the future lie buried in the past", the Oracle declares that it is time for him to begin his "reformatting", tapping the power of the Matrix and converting his purely organic gorilla body into a perfect blend of organic tissue and mechanical parts. Stepping back into real-space in a wash of light, the other three Maximals admire his new body. Primal says that they must be "reformatted" as well, and one by one, Cheetor, Rattrap and Blackarachnia exit the Oracle, in new, technorganic bodies.

Suddenly, the Oracle winks out of existence, and a hum fills the cave. This is another squadron of Vehicons, but instead of tanks, they are motorcycles. Lining up, Optimus Primal orders the Maximals to Maximize. Although no pain ensues, nothing happens. Optimus realizes they must learn how to transform as it has somehow become a lost art after the first Transformers "came" to Cybertron. Realizing this, the Maximals resign to combat in their strange new beast modes. Rattrap attacks a Cycle Drone's wheel with his teeth, Cheetor pounces on a motorcycle, and Blackarachnia uses her webs to snare another. Primal is shot, and plunges into a pit. Panicking, a voice from the Oracle reminds him that "he must tame the beast without to release the warrior within".

Finding his inner balance, he manages to transform. A blue light spreads throughout his body, converting it to robot mode through a liquid-morph style transformation. Activating his jets, he flies out from certain doom. Grabbing the nearest Drone, he demands answers, but gets none as they escape. His anger has made him lose his center, and he converts back to beast mode. Awed, Cheetor expresses his interest in this new transformation style. Optimus declares that they must re-learn the art of transformation and their new style of combat.

Meanwhile, a mysterious figure watches the battle in the citadel and vows to destroy the "impure" organic Maximals. It's Megatron, now the supreme ruler of Cybertron!
:—The postmortem on Optimus' transformation.

Notes
* A special advance screening of this episode was held at 1999, where it received an overwhelmingly positive reaction.

Continuity errors
* Although the Maximals' original beast modes from Beast Wars are shown in this episode, there are some rather strange inconsistencies here. Optimus Primal's fur is brown instead of grey, Rattrap's feet are dark orange instead of pink, Blackarachnia's skin is a lighter shade of blue and smoother, and Cheetor has black eyes with two black streaks running down his face.
* While an easy mistake, Optimus cannot have regressed to his organic (non-transmetal) beast mode. Optimus' organic body was destroyed during the Planet Buster crisis and with it the DNA sequence of the gorilla he scanned in the first episode of Beast Wars. So technically, Optimus should have returned to his Transmetal body.

Transformers references
* It was from this episode that the term "reformatting" passed into general use amongst Transformerdom.
* Optimus says that the first Transformers had to learn to transform before it became second nature to the robotic races... this is possibly a reference to several flashback sequences in the original cartoon series which mentioned how Autobots had to learn to change their shape to overcome their enemies.

Real-world references
*Rattrap says, "Ground Control to Major Optimus," which is a reference to the 1969 David Bowie song "Space Oddity."
*During Optimus Primal's visions, a group of black monoliths are briefly seen, a nod to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Additionally, the close-ups of Optimus while interfacing with the Oracle, intercut with his POV zooming through abstract visuals, are very similar to the infamous "trip" scene in 2001.

Beast Machines was a followup franchise to the very successful Beast Wars. Running from 1999 to 2000, its marquee characters were mainly Beast Wars stars, and the associated fiction directly followed the storyline of the Beast Wars cartoon.

Beast Machines featured a distinctive visual style in both its toys and its television series. The cartoon was darker and grittier than its more lighthearted predecessor, and it introduced controversial new elements such as Cybertron's organic core and a more spiritual approach to transformation. It also marked the return of fully-mechanical Transformers in the form of its antagonist faction, the Vehicons.

The Beast Machines franchise featured the following primary components:

*A toyline
*A cartoon series

The Beast Machines continuity would be picked up by the 2003 Universe franchise, which featured a comic series that used the world of the Beast Machines cartoon as its jumping-off point.

Beast Wars Returns
Beast Machines was not released in Japan until 2004, when Takara imported a dubbed version of the television series and some of the toyline as Super Lifeform Transformers: Beast Wars Returns (超生命体トランスフォーマー ビーストウォーズリターンズ Beast Wars Returns Chō Seimeitai Transformer).

The Beast Wars Returns release was far more low-key than the also-imported Beast Wars and Beast Wars Metals. The Beast Wars Returns toys were limited to Toys"R"Us exclusive releases, and the cartoon was aired only on a satellite station. It was also the first Transformers cartoon re-aired in Japan without an all-new theme song.

Notes
*The working name for the line was "Beast Hunters" before it became "Beast Machines." Marv Wolfman created the original treatment. A FoxKids press release said the following about it:

: Ultimately, Mainframe dropped both the Predacons and the humor! The Vehicons in place of Predacons was the idea of Mainframe's writers, the spiritual and mystical parts of the plot were a request from Hasbro, and the basic arc was Bob Skir's idea following suggestions from Hasbro, Mainframe, and Fox Kids.
* Since the first episode was aired five months after the press release, in an advance screening at 1999, the name change to Beast Machines seems to have been a late decision.
* In 2012, Hasbro re-trademarked the name "Beast Hunters" for the third season of the Transformers: Prime cartoon and the subline imprint of the accommodating toy line.
To return the Autobots to their home universe, Vector Prime makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Synopsis
The Autobots and their human allies look up into the Gigantion sky and watch as the space bridge opened by the Omega Lock disintegrates, leaving them with no route back to their home universe. Bud appears to freak out, but really, he's only pretending, since he is sure that Coby, or Red Alert or someone will have an idea on what to do. Unfortunately no-one does...except maybe Vector Prime, who murmurs quietly to himself. Jolt looks up at him, suspecting that he knows what Vector Prime is thinking, and tells him that he cannot do it. Optimus Prime takes action, bringing the panic to an end with the suggestion that they build a new space bridge generator. The Cybertron Defense Team start to argue among themselves that it's impossible: Scattorshot claims that even a starship wouldn't have enough energy to power the device. But then he realizes...they've got three! With the expert builders of Gigantion on their side, the Autobots start constructing the new generator and synchronising the reactors of their three starships to power it.

After a flurry of hard work, the space bridge is completed, and Coby is particularly impressed with the device. The generator is fired up, and successfully opens a space bridge above the Autobots' heads...but Vector Prime senses that something is not right, and is soon proven correct when a colossal swarm of bird drones comes flying through the portal! The Autobots recognize them as natives of Planet X and open fire, but even the power of Metroplex's axe and Optimus Prime's Super Mode cannons cannot make a dent in the ever-growing flock of drones. When the generator fails to respond to Scattorshot's shut-down comands, Vector Prime is forced to destroy it with his sword, closing the portal and causing the remaining drones to fade away. Disheartened as the Autobots are, Optimus assures them that Vector Prime did the right thing. Alas, Scattorshot declares that building a new space bridge generator is now impossible.

Reflecting on what to do next, Metroplex inquires why the Autobots do not simply go back out of the universe the way they came in. Everyone explains that the warp gate they used has since closed, and will not open for another year...at which point Vector Prime speaks his mind at last, informing everyone that the warp is the only option. The Autobots do not understand—after all, they cannot wait a year—but Bud quickly pipes up, having realized that Vector Prime intends to use his powers to reverse time to take everyone back in time to when the warp was open, thereby allowing them to travel through it. Jolt protests, however, shocking the Autobots with the revelation that turning back time to such a degree will kill Vector Prime. Optimus Prime refuses to condone such an action, and Jetfire suggests trying to evacuate the inhabitants of their universe into this one, but Vector Prime relates what he has long known: the black hole will not merely consume physical matter...it will eventually consume the substance of time itself, destroying all universes, all realities, all of creation. Vector Prime claims that he will not truly die, but Bud does not understand, and so Jolt helps to explain that while Vector Prime's linear lifespan may come to an end, since he has spent most of his life existing in the void outside of the flow of time, he will always exist there, and watch over them forever.

The Autobots unenthusiastically leave to start preparing the starships for departure, while Bud congratulates Vector Prime on what believes to be a "new job", not truly understanding that his friend is going to die. Vector Prime shrinks the Planet Map and gives it to Bud as a memento, and then separates from Safeguard, bidding him and his fellow Mini-Cons a fond farewell. Finally, Vector Prime says his final goodbye to Optimus Prime on a mountaintop, shaking the Autobot commander's hand and declaring their partnership an honor.

With the three starships in flight, Vector Prime too takes to the skies, where the three craft channel their energy into his sword, and he begins to reverse the flow of time. The warp tunnel opens, and the ships enter, even seeing the past incarnation of the Ogygia as it came through the tunnel in the first place. Just as they cross paths with the ship from the past, however, the time reversal effect begins to slow down, as Vector Prime grows weary. With the very last of his strength, Vector Prime pushes ahead, and the ships are able to exit the tunnel and re-synchronize with the local timestream. Glowing like a star in the sea of space, Vector Prime's body begins to dissolve, as the humans all burst into tears and the Autobots salute their comrade. Smiling down upon all the friends he has made since he started his new life, Vector Prime's form fades away, and his spark dissolves into atoms, having made the future his gift to them.

The memory of their friend strong in their minds, the Autobots set course for Cybertron, the black hole, Galvatron... and the final battle.
Quotes
"At this rate, they'll beat us by attrition!"<br>
"Addition? Dude, what's with the math? Just keep shooting!"
:—Red Alert again proves that Hot Shot isn't the brightest 'bot in the Autobot ranks.

"As I travelled through the timestream, into what you would call the future, I came upon an impassible barrier. Such things are not uncommon...all great events leave their mark upon the timestream. But as I peered through this barrier... I saw nothing beyond. Only emptiness. And I recognized the black hole for what it truly was. The end of time."
:—Vector Prime, revealing the true magnitude of the black hole's threat.

"Every single thing in the cosmos has a fixed life. Galaxies, planets, humans, Transformers... I alone have stood outside the reach of time, watching, ever vigilant, as the millennium marched past. I have seen oceans rise, continents shift and mountains crumble. I have seen brother rise against brother, and the decimation it leaves behind. And always the great cycle continues, as new life rises from the ashes of destruction. Now after eons of watching, I too have become part of the cycle, starting a new life with purpose and meaning, and though that life might end, I know now I will never die."
:—Vector Prime, on the cyclical nature of time.

"Vector Prime has always lived outside of time. For that reason, Vector Prime will always exist, as long as time itself exists, but we will never see him again. But I know he'll be there, watching over us."
:—Jolt, clarifying Vector Prime's "death".

"We won't be able to ever see him again, but he'll always be with us in our hearts."
:—Lori

"After eons of watching, I began a new life, with purpose and meaning. And though that life now ends, I know that in the hearts of these friends I have made, I shall live forever. Farewell, Bud, the future is my gift to you."
:—Vector Primes final words (in the linear timestream).

"Farewell, my friend."
:—Optimus Prime paying his last respects

"I finally understand the true value of time, for it is the bonds between us that give time its meaning."
:—Vector Primes epiphany.
Notes
Differences with Galaxy Force
*Cybertron has Scattorshot note that the space bridge is not responding to his commands for it to shut down, hence why destroying it is necessary. Galaxy Force never mentions this.
*Galaxy Force explains that the space bridge was not functioning properly and tore open a door in time, rather than space, which is where the Laserbeaks came from. Destroying the portal severed their connection to the past and they faded away. Cybertron explains none of this, indicating that the Laserbeaks are present-day survivors of Planet X who have gone feral, but glossing over why they would fade away after the portal closes, or how so many of them survived the war in the first place.
*In turn, it is this distortion of space-time, and the risk it poses to Gigantion, that forces the Autobots to abandon their space bridge plan, rather than a lack of power, as in Cybertron. The original reasons are touched on, however, when Optimus supports Vector Prime's decision to destroy the space bridge due to the possibility of Gigantion being overrun with Laserbeak drones.
*In Cybertron, Bud congratulates Vector Prime on receiving a "new job", and Vector Prime thanks him. In Galaxy Force, Bud wants to know how he'll be able to contact Vector Prime when it's time for them to meet again, and Vector Prime simply tells him "he will know".

Animation and/or technical glitches
* Can Vector Prime's "helmet" move? Because it does.
* When Optimus Prime tries to dissuade Vector Prime from sacrificing himself, he says "you can't ask me to stand by while you sacrifice yourselves"-but he's only referring to one person.
* When the Autobots are saluting Vector Prime a final farewell, Jetifre is seen standing next to Override's right in the foreground, while Wing Saber is to Optimus' right in the background. Yet the next scene immediately shows Jetfire standing with Wing Saber on his left.

Transformer references
*Vector Prime's ability to reverse time was previously displayed once before, in the appropriately-titled "Time".
*As Vector Prime lists off things have a "fixed life," a silhouette of Generation 1 Optimus Prime's character model appears to illustrate Transformers.
*The other silhouetted image of Optimus Prime, which appears in a battle scene (pictured at right) is lifted from artwork from the sixth Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers story page.

Trivia
*Vector Prime reveals that the black hole will eventually devour all existence if left unchecked. Even when he's dead, Unicron still keeps trying to achieve his goals-and arguably even more efficiently than when he's alive!
*This is the first (and only) episode where Vector Prime visibly smiles a real smile.

Foreign localization
Korean
* Title: "Youngwon-han Sigong-ui Gamsija" (영원한 시공의 감시자, "Eternal Watcher of Time and Space")
* Original airdate: 03 November 2008
* Vector Prime's voice actor is the narrator of the series in Korean dub. Because of this, Vector Prime is sometimes considered not dead.
