The Ascenticons step up to help with relief efforts—but as Megatron tightens his grip on the Ascenticon Guard, Bumblebee begins to suspect that something is amiss.

Synopsis
After a long convalescence at Iacon's medical center, Windblade cheerfully reports to Ratchet that she's finally been cleared for active duty, but stops dead when confronted by the sight of a grim-faced Ratchet tending to the greviously wounded Javelin, and the comatose Ruckus and Kaskade. Ratchet warns her that this grisly sight is the least of his worries; in her absence, the Tether has fallen, levelling vast swathes of Iacon with it. Horrified, Windblade takes in the sight from above while Megatron and his innermost Ascenticons regard the devastation from a nearby balcony. The Ascenticon leader bitterly muses that he never wanted things to turn out this way, but the drastic actions of his followers have left him no choice but to continue down this road. Ignoring Jhiaxus's protests, Megatron orders his followers into action: Jhiaxus will rally his followers in Tarn, Ratbat will contact the infiltration troopers under his command, and Soundwave will be placed under the protection of the Ascenticon Guard. Indeed, Megatron has already enlisted some new Guard recruits directly from The Rise, but this extra muscle comes at a cost: the Ascenticon leader decrees that Elita-1 has outlived her purpose as the Guard's honest, idealistic figurehead... and makes it clear that Bumblebee must meet with an "accident" on his next mission.

Elita is indeed confused and outraged when Soundwave goes over her head to bring in these new recruits, and warns Soundwave that the presence of dangerous 'bots like Ion Storm and Nova Storm will undermine the goodwill she's worked to cultivate with the people of Cybertron. Soundwave doesn't care: Elita is relieved of command, confined to quarters, and Skytread is installed as the new leader of the Ascenticon Guard.
Predictably, Bumblebee isn't much pleased by the shakeup, and says as much during his next deployment as part of a search-and-rescue mission to help victims of the recent disaster. With no need to conceal his thinly veiled hatred of Bumblebee, Skytread orders him to check out a nearby storage building, smirking at the prospect of finally getting even with his rival. The moment Bumblebee's out of earshot, however, he puts in a call to Chromia to try and tell her what's happened, only to find that she's apparently busy with her own problems. In the meantime, Bumblebee gets to work; spying a hand amidst the debris, he frantically tries to dig out the stranded Cybertronian—but discovers that it belongs to a 'bot who's already dead. The sight brings back terrible memories for Bumblebee as he collapses onto a nearby rock... unaware of the glowing eyes watching his every move.

Elsewhere, Sentinel Prime and Orion Pax watch as Prowl escorts the Voin asserter through the streets while Nautica does her best to try and talk down the alien. Orion tries to keep Sentinel abreast of the crisis, but his news is not heartening: Vigilem has disappeared, Lodestar is gravely injured, the other Titans remain offline, and the Winged Moon has spun into an unstable orbit. But while the bullish Sentinel wants to arrest Soundwave and break The Rise as hard and fast as possible, Orion advocates restraint: better to focus on rebuilding what they already have while leaving the Ascenticons to a general capable of handling a surgical strike. However, there's only one Great General available; on hearing Pyra Magna's name, Sentinel immediately shuts down his deputy, and storms off, shouting that he'll pass the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, not Orion, and that he'll expose the Ascenticons as the traitors and liars he knows they are.

In the ruins, Bumblebee tries to fend off Catgut, and although he's able to shake off the Ascenticon long enough to transform and speed off, a barrage of laser fire from above rains down upon him, courtesy of Catgut's partner Treadshot, intent on finishing the job!

Meanwhile, Windblade and a team of other security veterans—Sureshot, Blades, Springer, and Smokescreen—assemble under the auspices of Novastar, who's sought them out to join a security team modelled after Novastar's Colonial Security division. This new recon and rapid response team will operate in conjunction with Hound's heavies; security, Novastar explains, will no longer just react to trouble... for the first time, they'll be getting proactive, organizing counterstrikes, and fighting back against those which would seek to bring down the planet from within.

Bumblebee doesn't go down easy, holding off Catgut long enough to leap to safety through a crack in the ceiling... but Catgut bounds after him, latches onto his leg, and drags him back down to the ground in time for Treadshot to charge his chest cannon and unleash a blast so powerful that it blows Bumblebee straight through the nearest wall. Treadshot moves in for the kill, but is taken aback by another high-powered blaster volley and backs off. The blaster belongs to Chromia, and as she helps Bumblebee up she gives him everything they know: Catgut and Treadshot are confirmed members of The Rise, and Bumblebee realizes that someone wanted him out of the picture. Chromia tries to console him by telling him that he did everything he could, but it's no use to Bumblebee: nothing on Cybertron has improved and Rubble is still dead.

At Rise headquarters, a furious Shockwave interrogates Skystalker, demanding to know what's happened to Vigilem. Skystalker, still traumatized, can't answer, but the session is cut short when an irate Sixshot barges in, demanding an explanation. Not only have dozens of Risers left to join the Ascenticon Guard, Mindwipe has sent Visper and Storm Cloud on a secret mission to continue his "research"—and this news prompts a horrified Shockwave to rise from his refueling chair...
Notes
Continuity notes
* Windblade was injured back in issue #9 during a raid on a Rise bunker and subsequently confined to a stasis tube for the next ten issues.
* Ratchet's other patients include Javelin, Kaskade, and Ruckus, who were all injured in issue #14: Javelin was shot in the head by Ruckus's team, while Ruckus and Kaskade were themselves badly wounded when Soundwave detonated the abandoned Titan they were using as a temporary base.
* The Voin asserter arrived on Cybertron in issue #16, seeking retribution for the Voin scavenger that Quake killed in issue #5.
* Pyra Magna had been referenced several times before as some kind of political prisoner, and this issue reveals that she was previously one of the Great Generals of Cybertron alongside Dai Atlas, Strika, and Ultra Magnus—presumably, as per Megatron's flashback in issue #15, they served in the War of the Threefold Spark. Orion specifically notes that Ultra Magnus is "absent" from Cybertron, in what's presumably foreshadowing for his upcoming Galaxies story arc.
* Skytread has disliked Bumblebee since issue #7, where Bumblebee took down both him and Refraktor in a sparring match; their rivalry continued into #11, where Skytread knocked Bumblebee unconscious, but 'Bee got his own back in #13 when he beat the tar out of Skytread.
* Following her uncertain fate in issue #17, this issue clarifies that Lodestar survived her encounter with Vigilem, but is badly injured and unable to fly.
* Chromia mentions that Treadshot is a confirmed member of The Rise; his name appeared among the list of Rise members Windblade and Chromia recovered from the Rise bunker in issue #9.

Transformers references
* In addition to the toyetic Battleslash, Roadtrap, and Acid Storm's Rainmaker compatriots, Swift joins the Ascenticon Guard, having previously appeared in the 2005 IDW continuity as a post-war Decepticon recruit during a 2015 The Transformers storyline...
* ...but the really unexpected cameo this time round is Crasher, who last showed up in 2007's Megatron Origin miniseries, a reference to the GoBots character of the same name. Perhaps for trademark reasons, she's drawn with the visored face that she sported in her first IDW appearance, itself based on Crasher's original toy, rather than her more humanoid cartoon visage.
* Orion namedrops Dai Atlas as one of Cybertron's Great Generals, noting that he's since gone immersant in what seems to be a reference to the character's depiction in the 2005 IDW continuity as an ancient Cybertronian from Nova Prime's era.
* Treadshot and Catgut are mentioned to have survived the wreck of the Iron Hope, a starship from the Timelines story "Force of Habit," and Chromia notes that subsisting on nucleon while stranded left the remaining crew permanently mode-locked. In the original Marvel Transformers comics and toy bios, nucleon was the substance responsible for changing ordinary Transformers into non-transforming Action Masters; presumably, Gutcruncher in the previous issue is also one of the "Iron Hope Hundred."
