Captain '''Carmine Fanzone''' is the apparent head of the [[Detroit]] police department. He hates machines, but in an "I'm old" sort of way rather than being evil or anything. However, despite his oft-repeated mantra of "''This'' is why I hate machines/robots" whenever some device in his vicinity goes on the fritz (often with comedic, embarrassing results), he's pragmatic enough to make use of technology when needed. For example, he's a world champion at yelling at subordinates through megaphones for added effect. And firing heavy weaponry at [[Dinobot (Animated)|rampaging robots]].

Despite his endless battle with the march of progress and general poor luck, Fanzone is a good cop, dedicated to protecting the people of his city, even if he dislikes certain demographics. He's also not a bad guy to have in a brawl. He doesn't ''completely'' trust the [[Autobot|Autobots]], but he's at least assured that they mean well and, like him, are here to protect and serve the people of Detroit. He just wishes that they'd stop destroying so much of the city in the process.

Along with machines, he also hates lawyers and kids, but most of all, he hates tech support for machines.

It was the beginning of a bad day when Captain Fanzone got a call for all units to respond to [[Sumdac Systems]] down by Lake Erie. (It was in the middle of his lunch break.) Taking command of the assembled emergency units, Fanzone quickly realized that they were in over their heads fighting a rampaging cybernetic bug-slug, and he ordered all humans to fall back and allow the drones to deal with the creature. When he noticed four cars refusing to fall back, he demanded to know who they were...at which point he realized [[Prowl (Animated)|a cop bike]] had no driver, and [[Captain Fanzone's car|his own car]] was among the group. It got even weirder when it turned out they were [[Transformer|alien robots]], but [[Sari Sumdac|some little girl]] managed to talk the cops down from shooting at the invaders.

Several days later, Fanzone, the Mayor, [[Isaac Sumdac]], and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|that robot that looks like his car]] were taken hostage by [[Starscream (Animated)|an evil jet]], but were saved by the aforementioned little girl and the cop bike. As the cop bike took him down, Fanzone declared that this is why he hates machines. Thankless primate. {{storylink|Transform and Roll Out}}

Fanzone was courted by [[Prometheus Black]], who hoped to use the Captain's mistrust of machines in general and Sumdac products in specific to win his company a contract with the Detroit police department. However, once he saw the berserk rage that [[Colossus Rhodes]] displayed when smashing up the parking lot of an arena, he decided he didn't much like Black's biotechnology either. Not long after, he presided over a demonstration of new Sumdac models which proved to still have a few bugs in the system. Sumdac mentioned that these models had much better recognition systems, thus avoiding a repeat of "the unfortunate incident with the Captain's wife". However, sabotage courtesy of the newly minted supervillain Meltdown ensured that the new robots were still far from ready for prime-time. {{storylink|Total Meltdown}}

When police responded to the rampage of the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobots]], Captain Fanzone arrived and asked how bad it was into his megaphone...to an officer who was standing right next to him. The officer pointed at the rampaging robots, as [[Snarl (Animated)|a mechanical triceratops]] sent a car flying through the air, which hit Fanzone's car, crushing it. Captain Fanzone remained completely unmoved, then grabbed a bazooka from a nearby officer and fired at the triceratops...which promptly ate the projectile. Fanzone again proclaimed his dislike of machines. {{storylink|Blast from the Past}}

After [[Nanosec]]'s defeat by the [[Autobot|Autobots]], Fanzone took the suddenly elderly supervillain into custody. {{storylink|Nanosec (episode)|Nanosec}}

Captain Fanzone accompanied a number of DPD officers to a military base where the [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] [[Blitzwing (Animated)|Blitzwing]] and [[Lugnut (Animated)|Lugnut]] had been sighted. He was quite miffed to find that the two giant alien robots had apparently vanished into thin air, unaware that the two had adopted [[Earth]] modes and were hiding in plain sight, and with very odd color schemes. {{storylink|Lost and Found (episode)|Lost and Found}}

Captain Fanzone was brought in to lead the investigation regarding Sari Sumdac's disappearance and probable kidnapping. In questioning the Autobots, he was somewhat dubious as to the merits of teaching a little girl "ninja nerve blows." After noticing suspicious behavior from Prowl and Bulkhead, he resolved to follow the two Autobots and pursued them in a (increasingly leaking) submersible. Luckily, Fanzone arrived on [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|the island]] safely, though his vessel crumbled into pieces. Nature proved almost more hostile to the Captain than technology, ultimately resulting in him getting trapped in quicksand and requiring rescue from the very individuals he was shadowing. Grudgingly going along with them, he uncovered Prometheus Black's plan to genetically alter Sari into a biotechnological shapeshifter. His outrage was brief, however, as the mad scientist dropped him into a gladiatorial arena and sicced [[Fusion creature|his failed experiments]] on the Captain and Prowl. Forced to team up to survive, the Autobot earned the Captain's respect and trust as they fought their way out of the research facility. {{storylink|Survival of the Fittest}}

Later, Fanzone found Bulkhead and Sari painting on a billboard on a Detroit rooftop, and stated that they have graffiti laws. When Bulkhead's body was stolen by the [[Headmaster (Animated) |Headmaster]], Fanzone helped in the investigation/search for Bulkhead's body, and when the Headmaster made his plan public (via the evening news) Fanzone wondered how the heck to stop the Headmaster. He later went along with Optimus Prime's plan to "pay him" the money he wanted, but they actually launched a sneak attack on the Headmaster. While the Autobots engaged the Headmaster in battle, Sari, Prof. Sumdac, and Fanzone focused on stabilizing the Solar Fusion Core that the Headmaster had set to explode, which would destroy the entire state of Michigan. Eventually though, the Headmaster accidentally destroyed the control panel, which destroyed any possibility that they could fix it. After Bulkhead had gotten his body back, he came up with the idea to use his newly-acquired artistic skills to build a robot to go into the fusion core and stabilize it manually, as it was their only option left. When the robot succeeded, Fanzone praised its efforts, saying it was "Alright for a machine". {{storylink|Headmaster (episode) |Headmaster}}

And then that trust was destroyed along with a good portion of Detroit after [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]'s [[Megatron Rising - Part 2|rampage]]. When an [[Steelhaven (Animated)|alien ship]] landed in Detroit, Fanzone told the Autobots to stay away, lest something worse happen. When it turned out to be the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]], Fanzone was resigned to the fact that the Autobots would have to deal with them. While the Autobots aboard the alien ship, he refused Sari Sumdac's plea to go to their aid. Once [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] stepped out and told them they were Autobots, Fanzone appeared mildly relieved—until [[Ultra Magnus (Animated)|a missile carrier]] and [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|a jerk monster truck]] rolled right after Prime, with the later vehicle denting Fanzone's car. During a press conference with [[Augustus Edsel|Mayor Edsel]] and the monster truck named Sentinel Prime, Fanzone received a phone call from what he believed was a woman reporting on Decepticon activity. Heading to old Detroit, Sentinel Prime condescendingly told the humans to stay away. Later, he was on hand to arrest [[Headmaster (Animated)|Henry Masterson]], only for [[Porter C. Powell]], the new CEO of Sumdac Systems, to arrive and point out that Masterson had committed no real crimes, as robots weren't protected by law, not to mention that the incident occurred on a boat in international waters between the [[United States of America|United States]] and [[Canada]]. Reluctantly, Fanzone released Masterson. This is why he hates businessmen. {{storylink|The Return of the Headmaster}}

With the prospect of being recalled to Cybertron, the Autobots had the dilemma of who was going to care for Sari after the mean old businessman put her out on the streets. First on their list of grade-A trustworthy humans was Captain Fanzone. Granted, the list was short and also included Prometheus Black and Nino Sexton. In an effort by the Autobots to get the two humans to bond, Sari discussed with Fanzone the merits of being able to stay up as late as she likes, as well as her need for a very large allowance.

Captain Fanzone breathed a sigh of relief when the Autobots got to stay. Sari said they could still hang out. {{storylink|Mission Accomplished}}

The captain was close by when a breakdown in human-robot relations occurred during the Autobots' assistance with a garbage strike. Breaking up the confrontation between a curmudgeonly citizen and the similarly curmudgeonly [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]], he advised the veteran Autobot that he needed to work on his people skills. When someone like Fanzone says this, you really ought to worry. {{storylink|Garbage In, Garbage Out}}

While pursuing some of the racers of ''[[Street Demon]]'' show, Fanzone managed to arrest two of them who'd been driven off the road by [[Blurr (Animated)|a blue car]] when the Autobots provided assistance to the drivers. Interrogating one (and serving as both [[Prowl (G1)|good cop]] ''and'' [[Barricade (Movie)|bad cop]]), he learned where the next race would be. As he headed downtown, he was surprised when Bumblebee drove up alongside and opened his door, and Sari Sumdac told him to jump into the car—at which point he noticed [[Blitzwing (Animated)|a fighter jet]] shooting missiles at him. Fanzone jumped into Bumblebee, where Sari revealed that [[Master Disaster]] was controlling the blue car with some sort of remote control. After the aforementioned blue car won a mid-air game of chicken with the jet, Bumblebee removed the two humans, then went to fight the Decepticon. As Master Disaster tried to sneak away, Fanzone placed him under arrest. {{storylink|Velocity}}

Once Bumblebee had managed to defeat [[Swindle (Animated)|Swindle]], the S.U.V. tried to get away in his vehicle mode, only to find it inoperable, which allowed Bumblebee to apprehend them. Fanzone then proceeded to arrest them, and have Swindle towed away. {{storylink|SUV: Society of Ultimate Villainy}}

After Meltdown was abducted from jail, Fanzone was called in to investigate. While at the scene, Fanzone encountered Porter C. Powell, who immediately blamed Sari and the Autobots for Meltdown's escape, and was shown a recorded conversation they had with Meltdown as proof. Suspicious, Fanzone asked him how he obtained that recording, which was met with an evasive response from Powell. After Powell pompously demanded that he provide him with police protection, Fanzone ignored him and walked off. Later that night, Fanzone received a call from Powell, informing him that a robbery had been committed by the Autobots, though the only thing they took was Meltdown's [[genetic modifier]]. Turned out that the robbery and Meltdown's escape were caused by their [[Blackarachnia (Animated)|"Spider-Lady Friend"]] blackmailing the Dinobots and Optimus Prime into helping her and the Autobots returned the genetic modifier back to Powell, albeit melted and damaged beyond repair. An irate Powell demanded that Fanzone arrest the Autobots for endangering his life, but Fanzone, already fed up with Powell at this point, said he was going to get some sleep and walked away, but not before telling Powell to do the same or he'd arrest him for being a public nuisance. {{storylink|Black Friday (episode)|Black Friday}}

After Optimus Prime defeated [[Headmaster (Animated)|Headmaster]], Fanzone showed up mutely to arrest him. {{storylink|TransWarped}}

When the [[Constructicon (Animated)|Constructicons]] (under [[Dirt Boss (Animated)|new management]]) started their oil-racketing gig, Fanzone asked whether Bulkhead knew the [[Mixmaster (Animated)|rude]] [[Scrapper (Animated)|oil guzzlers]] in question. When Bulkhead admited so and claimed that they were simply good bots that fell in with [[Decepticon|the wrong crowd]], Fanzone told Bulkhead to tell his 'good bots' that he does not appreciate illegal horseplay in his town, especially if it's by machines. {{storylink|Three's a Crowd}}

Fanzone was given a [[Sound Wave]] for Christmas, with the note "A machine even you could love". It proceeded to take over his mind. Meanwhile, in a virtual world, Bumblebee stole virtual-Fanzone's car.

Upon the real [[Soundwave (Animated)|Soundwave]]'s defeat, Fanzone was freed. {{storylink|Human Error, Part II}}

When the police heli-drones started malfunctioning, Fanzone went to Sumdac Tower to complain to Isaac Sumdac in person. All he found was Ratchet trying to work use Bulkhead's Space Bridge to find [[Omega Supreme (Animated)|Omega Supreme]]. Then said heli-drones appeared and started attacking Fanzone. Fortunately, his life was saved when the Space Bridge activated and sucked Fanzone out of harm's way. Problem was, it sent him to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], a planet inhabited completely by robots. Things did not turn better when [[Flareup (Animated)|one robot]] encouraged [[Grandus (Animated)|her large friend]] to step on him. Fanzone's life was saved when Ratchet, who had also jumped through the Space Bridge, showed up. Unfortunately for Fanzone, all of Cybertron was anti-organic, thanks to their new leader, Sentinel 'Magnus'. He was apprehended by Sentinel and was a witness to the Autobot Council's debate whether or not they should fire on Omega Supreme. When Ratchet's disagreement with Sentinel caused him to be branded as a traitor, Fanzone provided a decent distraction with a loud (and disgusting) sneeze.

Ratchet and Fanzone escaped to the underground tunnels, only to find someone had been living there for a while: a tall one-eyed Decepticon that Ratchet identified as [[Shockwave (Animated)|Shockwave]]. When Shockwave revealed his plans to steal Omega Supreme's access codes, the two bots had a tussle and Shockwave got away. Fortunately, Fanzone knew where to go: to [[Rattletrap|the guy in town who dealt in false documents]]. Ratchet and Fanzone were able to convince him to give them an access card to the Cybertron Central Infirmary. When those codes turned out bogus, Jazz, who Fanzone knew had been tailing them since the tunnels, gave them a genuine keycard. Then Ratchet showed them what they were fighting over: [[Arcee (Animated)|a comatose robot dame]]. However, they had just led Shockwave to her. Fanzone demanded an explanation of why she was so important. Ratchet briefly told him how he and Arcee were captured by [[Lockdown (Animated)|Lockdown]] when Ratchet was transporting her and the activation codes she carried, only for her memory to be wiped by Ratchet's EMP generator. Ratchet then put Fanzone and Arcee into the room, only for Shockwave to break into the room, bury Fanzone in rubble, and fly off with Arcee.

Later, [[Alpha Trion (Animated)|two]] [[Perceptor (Animated)|of]] the Autobot Council provided Ratchet and Fanzone a Space Bridge ride home. The moment was slightly soured by Ratchet refusing to give Sentinel the Magnus Hammer and jumping through the Space Bridge with Fanzone. Back on Earth, Fanzone loudly complained about how he had been "mixed up in a war, nearly stepped on, blasted, buried in rubble, and possibly zapped into space" and was now an accomplice in intergalactic grand theft. Then Ratchet destroyed a malfunctioning heli-drone and Fanzone called it even. Fanzone led a potato team in attempting to apprehend Optimus Prime after the Autobot was caught on camera breaking into [[HomeTech]]'s main laboratory. Little did he know that the real offender was Blitzwing, using a holographic disguise. Optimus slipped through his fingers anyway, after the other Autobots intervened. {{storylink|Prime Suspect}}

* According to [[Marty Isenberg]], Captain Fanzone was named after Detroit native [[wikipedia:Carmen_Fanzone|Carmen Fanzone]], a neighbor of his and a former player for the Chicago Cubs. Due to the relative scarcity of Fanzones in Michigan, the real Fanzone had to sign a waiver before the character could be used. The real Carmen Fanzone also doesn't look or sound anything like the ''Animated'' one.

* Fanzone's ability to open his eyes seems to vary from episode to episode. In many episodes (seemingly the ones animated by [[The Answer Studio]]) his eyes are permanently closed... which does match the stock [[character model]] seen above, granted, but probably isn't how he's supposed to be 24/7.

* Captain Fanzone is so slow to adopt new technology that he has a [[wikipedia:rotary_dial|rotary dial]] cell phone...and he even has problems with that.

* His car has been crushed several times, yet it continues to show up to be crushed again. He must have good insurance.

* Fanzone's extended family, including his wife and mother-in-law, have been alluded to on a number of occasions, but have yet to make an actual appearance. Given that it's been implied that the other Fanzones are just as susceptible to "unfortunate incidents" with technology as the captain himself is, that's probably just as well.

* Fanzone is actually the first human [[This Is Why I Hate Machines|ever to set foot on Cybertron]] in the ''Animated'' universe.

Some Autobots wonder why '''Grimlock''' is even on their side. His disposition is much more suited to the [[Decepticon]]s. After all, he values power and strength over wisdom and compassion, and furthermore, he doesn't really get along with most Autobots. When faced with a problem, his usual responses are to slice it with his [[Energo weapon|energo-sword]], tear it to pieces with his bare hands, or outright eat it. He is more willing to accept casualties than most of the Autobot leadership, and doesn't seem particularly concerned about the [[Human|fleshies]] either. These things, coupled with his dislike of [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], have led to a defection or two on Grimlock's part. He'd have no problem offing the [[Prime (rank)|Autobot leader]] if he thought he could get away with it, though.

What the Autobots don't realize is that the only thing he hates more than weakness is those who abuse their strength, meaning when push comes to shove, Grimlock will always fall in on the right side of the fence. And despite their disagreements, Grimlock holds a respect for Prime's strength and leadership.

Grimlock is the leader of the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], a small but powerful strike squad. Grimlock himself is extremely strong and durable, and is one of the few Transformers who can not only stand toe-to-toe with Optimus Prime and [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], but actually give them a run for their money. Despite his strength and prowess, Grimlock continually struggles with his pronouns.

When mysterious tremors shook the [[Ark (G1)|Autobot base]], [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]'s investigation revealed strange objects behind a rock wall. After removing the wall, the Autobots found a cave full of dinosaur bones. The Autobots decided the idea of dinosaurs was interesting and researched the prehistoric beasts. Wheeljack and [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] asked Optimus Prime if they could build robot dinosaurs, and Prime agreed this was a good idea, only God knows why. Grimlock, [[Slag (G1)|Slag]], and [[Sludge (G1)|Sludge]] were built and unveiled to the Autobots, but the Dinobots were dimwitted and violent, and they attacked their makers, Frankenstein's monster style. Grimlock blasted [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]] with his fire-breath, damaging it. Optimus Prime decreed that the Dinobots "must be destroyed." Wheeljack convinced him instead to lock them away, and the trio were herded back into the cave and buried alive.

Later, the Decepticons took over a hydroelectric plant, and when the Autobots arrived to stop them, the Autobots were defeated and captured. Wheeljack, Ratchet, and [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], left behind at the Autobot base to finish repairing Teletraan I, decided to go against Optimus' orders and release the Dinobots, but not before upgrading their brains to be smarter and more obedient. After the Dinobots were reactivated, Wheeljack asked them to save their friends. Grimlock said he would obey... this time. They successfully attacked the Decepticons and freed the imprisoned Autobots. Optimus forgave Wheeljack, Ratchet, and Bumblebee for disobeying his orders and welcomed the victorious Dinobots back to the Autobots. {{storylink|S.O.S. Dinobots}}

After a [[Meteorini Chipperoni|meteor]] surging with unknown energies struck the [[Earth]], Optimus ordered the three Dinobots to guard it. He was so pleased with the Dinobots he asked Ratchet and Wheeljack to build two more. Meanwhile, Megatron was frustrated at the Dinobots' success and sent [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] to probe them for potential weaknesses. Reading the Dinobots' minds, he discovered that Grimlock was arrogant and believed he would make a better leader than the weak Optimus Prime. Megatron decided to use this to his advantage and approached them himself. He played to Grimlock's jealousy and agreed with him that the strongest should be leader. The Dinobots declared Optimus Prime their enemy.

Realizing the meteorite was due to explode, Optimus left to warn the Dinobots, but they attacked him. Instead of destroying him completely, Grimlock carried him to the Decepticons, who had stolen the meteorite during the battle. Megatron was angry that Optimus Prime was not destroyed, and Starscream suggested that despite Grimlock's arrogance, inside he was still compassionate (or as compassionate as Grimlock could get). Grimlock didn't take this well and blasted Starscream right in the chest. They were interrupted by the two new Dinobots, [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] and [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]], whom Megatron ordered the original three Dinobots to attack. At the climax of the battle, the meteorite exploded, but Optimus Prime pushed Grimlock out of the way, saving him. Grimlock realized the error of his ways, and the Dinobots forced the Decepticons into retreat. Grimlock then apologized for his jealousy. {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}}

When [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] was brought into Earth's orbit, wreaking havoc, Optimus asked the Dinobots to help control the damage. Grimlock announced he didn't much care if the planet fell apart, but Wheeljack quickly pointed out that he was still on the planet. Defeated by superior logic, Grimlock agreed to help and the Dinobots were soon attempting to stop a tsunami. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} After Cybertron left Earth's orbit, the Dinobots even helped to rebuild the shattered human cities. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}}

Teletraan I activated the Dinobots when the newly-built [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s breached Autobot headquarters. With the battle moving outside, Grimlock commanded the Dinobots to transform, only to find themselves facing [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]]. Attempting to bite the combiner, Grimlock was swatted aside. The Dinobots were able to hold Devastator off long enough for the Autobots to discover that Megatron had defeated Optimus by cheating during their single combat. The Autobots were then able to help defeat the Constructicons and the rest of the Decepticons, driving them into a lava-filled chasm. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

The Decepticons joined forces with [[Sub-Atlantica]] and staged a full-scale attack on [[Washington, D.C.]]. The Autobots were overwhelmed, forcing Wheeljack to call for the Dinobots' assistance. Grimlock expressed his frustration at being called whenever the Autobots were in over their heads. With their help, the Autobots were able to overturn the Decepticons' advance and plunge the now-burning city of Sub-Atlantica back into the sea. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

This pattern of the Autobots' dependence on the Dinobots repeated when the artificial intelligence [[TORQ III]], put under Decepticon control, turned all machines against Mankind. With every piece of help he and his troops gave, Grimlock was never slow to add a scathing remark about the inabilities of the Autobots. {{storylink|Day of the Machines}} That said, he was not unwilling to admit the failings of his own troops, either. He willingly took them to the time-displaced "[[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]]", where they trained in the wilderness {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} and helped stop a Decepticon raid on the prehistoric paradise, with Grimlock inspiring the native [[dinosaur]]s to help them fight the Decepticons. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

When the Autobots were "exposed" by [[Shawn Berger]] as being the true perpetrators of the various attacks conducted by the Decepticons, they were banished from Earth. The final straw for Grimlock came when he and the Dinobots were injured in a Decepticon trap at an airfield. Enraged, Grimlock refused to take orders from Optimus Prime any more and led the Dinobots away from the Ark. When the Autobots began to suffer from [[Cybertonium]] deficiency, [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] and his girlfriend [[Carly]] attempted to persuade the Dinobots—who continued to function perfectly, as they had been built on Earth without Cybertonium—to steal some of the mineral from a Decepticon shipment coming in from Cybertron. Although Grimlock was willing to let the Autobots die and decided to crush the humans, he recognized the Cybertron connection to the Cybertonium. Instead of securing the element, Grimlock opted to lead the Dinobots to Cybertron itself, where they were captured by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}} He altered the Dinobots' [[Circuits|memory circuits]] and put them to work in the Cybertonium mines, where they remained until Spike and Carly repaired them. Grimlock and Spike faked having an argument, compelling the guards to lower the energy fences to remove the troublesome humans—only to be obliterated by the Dinobots. In the year 2005, Grimlock and the other Dinobots were stationed on the Autobots' Moonbase 1, seemingly overseeing weapons production. When word arrived from Earth that Autobot City was suffering a massive Decepticon attack, they traveled to Earth with Optimus Prime and were dispatched by the Autobot leader to take on Devastator. Though they attacked fearlessly, the giant combiner robot was too much for them, shrugging off their attacks and overwhelming them in short order.

After fleeing [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]'s attack on [[Autobot City]], the Dinobots, along with [[Kup (G1)|Kup]] and [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]], crashed on [[Quintessa]], and were separated from the two Autobots. During their search, the Dinobots met [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]]. Grimlock initially didn't like the rhyming little robot, but soon grew quite fond of him, letting him ride on his back. Eventually, the Dinobots managed to locate where Kup and Hot Rod were being held by the planet's rulers, the [[Quintesson]]s. The Dinobots entered the Quintessons' execution room with all the grace they could muster, and Grimlock immediately declared his desire to munch metal. After the Dinobots saved Hot Rod and Kup from the [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticons]], a Quintesson judge ordered the Sharkticons to execute the Dinobots. Grimlock stomped his foot on the ground and ordered the Sharkticons to execute the Quintessons. They complied with the Dinobot's order. Heading for the [[Junkion (planet)|planet of Junk]], Grimlock watched the Autobots and the [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]] celebrate their new friendship. The party ended shortly after [[Re-Cycle]] [[Kiss|kissed]] Grimlock, causing him to reassert his status as "king". When [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]], Kup and Spike were kidnapped, Rodimus Prime took Grimlock on a stealth(!) mission to [[Chaar]], to investigate whether the Decepticons were responsible. The pair found the Decepticons, but realised their eternal foes were far too low on power to have kidnapped anyone. As they discussed the ramifications of their discovery, Grimlock's raised voice alerted the Decepticons, who attacked. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1}} Despite the Decepticons' depowered state, the pair were overwhelmed, and only the intervention of [[Springer (G1)|Springer]] and [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] in a stolen [[Skuxxoid]] ship saved them. Retiring to a safe location, Grimlock tried unsuccessfully to rouse Rodimus and the Autobots feared that their leader had died. They were overjoyed when he returned to the land of the living, and Grimlock announced he loved Arcee, despite her protests that she hadn't done anything. Following a vision Rodimus had had, they headed for Quintessa, arriving in time to find Ultra Magnus, Kup and Spike on trial. Grimlock jumped from Springer's helicopter mode, ready to attack, only for the Quintessons to zoom past him in their haste to escape. He was greatly disappointed. The destruction of Quintessa destroyed the Autobot rescue ship, sending its occupants hurtling through space to eventually splat-land on the planet [[Goo]]. After an altercation with some sort of garbage-processing machine, the Autobots again found themselves under attack by the Decepticons, this time under the control of the Quintessons. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3}} Fortunately the Autobots were rescued in short order by the Junkions and taken back to Junk. There Rodimus had another vision, which led them back to Cybertron. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}} Grimlock accompanied Springer and Arcee to Earth, where they attempted to defend [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] from [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]]. Enjoying another of Kup's tales about planet [[Dread]], Grimlock asked about [[Chaos (alien)|Chaos]], a monster he'd heard lived there, and Kup told him to forget he ever heard the name. A lead took the Autobots to Goo, where they discovered that the Decepticons had found a source of [[death crystal]]s. Grimlock and [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]] finally managed to get the truth from Kup—the death crystals were produced by Chaos. The group travelled to Dread, where Grimlock, Wheelie and Wreck Gar were left with [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]]. They soon got bored and found Kup and Blurr in time to save the pair from an attack by the [[Predacon (G1)|Predacon]]s. The Autobots subsequently attacked the Decepticons, who had been working on a cannon with which they interned to fire death crystals at Cybertron. While Kup entered [[Queeg Mountain]] to find Chaos, the other Autobots held off the Predacons. When the reanimated Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron and reported the alleged deaths of Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Arcee, Spike and [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]], Grimlock angrily swore to stomp the Quintessons into the ground. Grimlock helped to sniff out the "[[dinosaur transform static]]" that implicated Trypticon in the theft of world monuments, though before the Trypticon link was discovered, Grimlock and the Dinobots were accused of being the culprits by [[Six-Gun]]. {{storylink|Thief in the Night}} Grimlock continued his newfound sense of helpfulness by serving drinks at a major diplomatic event held on Cybertron. When Daniel wandered off in boredom, Grimlock followed his friend and they were both transported to the other-dimensional realm of [[Menonia]], where Grimlock was duped into fighting on the side of the tyrannical Quintesson [[Mara-Al-Utha]]. {{storylink|Madman's Paradise}}

Grimlock was occasionally among the Autobots seen attacking Galvatron's forces in space, and later on the planet [[Eurythma]]. {{storylink|Carnage in C-Minor}} At one point, he was stationed at Autobot City when [[Victor Drath]] attempted to infiltrate Metroplex using the lifeless bodies of Ultra Magnus and the other Autobots. Later in the year, when Decepticon leader Galvatron had Cybertron infused with function-inverting anti-electrons, a dose of the particles gave Grimlock super-intelligence. During a mission to [[Unicron]]'s disembodied head, where the Autobots were outmatched by the new Decepticon [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]], Grimlock used components of Unicron's head to construct the [[Technobot (G1)|Technobots]] to battle them. Grimlock's greatest victory came when he and a large number of other Transformers with animal transformations were summoned to a world at the center of the galaxy by the ex-assistant of the ancient genius, [[Primacron]], creator of Unicron. The assistant had assembled these "[[Primitive]]" Transformers in the hope that their simple instincts could defeat Primacron's newest creation, [[Tornedron]], but one by one they fell to him, with Grimlock apparently crushed under Trypticon. Grimlock survived, and followed Tornedron back to Primacron's lab. When Tornedron turned on his master, like his predecessor had, Primacron's complicated plans and equations could not find a way to stop him. Grimlock, on the other hand, randomly flicked a switch which reversed Tornedron's energy polarity, undoing the damage he had done and dissipating the creature. Dancing around over his successful saving of the universe, Grimlock decimated Primacron's lab, which he decided was the smartest thing he'd ever done. {{storylink|Call of the Primitives}}

In 2004, Grimlock and the Dinobots served as the front line and primary strength of the forces led by Optimus Prime, battling on Cybertron to prevent Megatron from taking complete control of the planet. To break the Autobots' war effort, the Decepticons used primitive telepathic alien lifeforms named "[[Unleasher]]s" to assault the Dinobots' psychically, causing the bestial impulses of their dinosaur modes to overwhelm their minds and driving them into a rampage. Faced with their own potential destruction at the claws and fangs of the rampaging Dinobots, the Autobots were forced to deactivate their out-of-control comrades. Studying Grimlock's brain casing, Wheeljack was able to isolate the psychic sub-routine warping the Dinobots' minds, but its removal proved virtually impossible, thanks in part to the shortage of supplies caused by the war effort. As a stop-gap measure, Wheeljack proposed taking Grimlock's brain casing to Earth and installing it in one of the new "[[Binaltech]]" bodies that had been developed there between the Autobots and [[Earth Defense Command]]: a body with a vehicular alternate form, thereby removing the corrupting influence of Grimlock's dinosaur mode as a temporary solution until the problem could be permanently fixed. Grimlock grumbled at the notion of losing the power of his dinosaur form, but, eager to get back to fighting, agreed to the process, and Wheeljack promptly sped his brain casing to Earth, where it was installed in a new body styled after a Ford Mustang. {{storylink|Beast in the Machine}}

As the Binaltech conflict continued, thanks to the efforts of the time-tossed Decepticon [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] and the mysterious time- and space-bending entity known as the [[Optimus Primal|Protector]], its events were ultimately diverged from the mainstream timeline into a parallel universe dubbed the "BT World".

This Bluestreak had traveled across the dimensions, from the mainstream timeline, to inform the Binaltech Autobots that the [[spark]] of their [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] (previously lost in a [[subspace]] accident {{storylink|Prowl & Chase}}) had appeared in his home universe, and begun to destabilize. Grimlock couldn't quite wrap his head around the whole ordeal, and didn't take kindly to Bluestreak's endless waffling as they took him back to Autobot City to explain his story, but he was able to work out his frustrations when they happened upon a rampaging [[phonon hologram]]—a malfunctioning science project created by knock-off Binaltech technology. {{storylink|Unfinished Business, Part 1}} Grimlock was subsequently part of the Autobot team who tracked down the source of the signal destabilizing Prowl's spark, which proved to be the work of [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] and [[Doctor Arkeville]], who were using energy from Prowl's spark to power a synthetic [[electrum]] giant. Later, Grimlock was among the Autobot forces who battled [[Nemesis Prime (G1)|Nemesis Prime]]'s Decepticons in [[Australia]]. In the 900,000 years that followed the defeat of the Decepticons, the influence of the Unleashers upon Grimlock and the Dinobots' minds was finally cured. The other Dinobots were brought back online, and Grimlock was reinstated in a brand new ''tyrannosaurus'' body, complete with a crown, which he considered a real [[Grimlock (G1)/toys#Masterpiece|masterpiece]]. Subsequently, many of the Autobots upgraded into the hyper-dimensional lifeforms known as the [[Alternity (species)|Alternity]], but Grimlock apparently declined to take this evolutionary step.

Ascending to a position as defenders of space and time, the Alternity became aware of the [[Planicron]]s, two-dimensional lifeforms that were attempting to evolve themselves. Searching for a "gateway" that would permit the Planicrons' evolution when they passed through it, the Alternity contacted the Autobots of the BT World, convinced the gateway was somewhere in their [[universal stream]]. Grimlock and the Protector met the small team of Agents who arrived in their world soon after, and informed them that they had identified the gateaway as the circuit diagram for the super-dimensional reactor the [[Critias Gate]]. Shortly after creating the [[Technobot (G1)|Technobot]]s, Grimlock joined [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]], [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike]] and others as they observed a battle between [[Computron (G1)|Computron]] and [[Abominus (G1)|Abominus]]. Thanks to upgrades by [[Dalton|Doctor Dalton]], Computron was faring well in battle. While the Autobots remained dormant inside [[Mount St. Hilary]], the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] detected Cybertronian life. Dispatching a probe, the Ark learned that [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] had come to Earth and was wandering the [[Savage Land]]. The Ark used data gathered from the Savage Land to convert five of the dormant Autobots into the Dinobots. Information on this battle were stored on the Ark's memory banks and were discovered four million years later by [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] {{storylink|The Last Stand}}, and Ratchet, at the moment the last Autobot on Earth that remained functional, tempted [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] with details of Shockwave's alleged defeat as currency for a deal with him. Promising Megatron that he would find the Dinobots and use them to defeat Shockwave on Megatron's behalf, {{storylink|Warrior School!}} Ratchet traveled to the Savage Land and retrieved the bodies of the Dinobots. Ratchet faked this defeat using video of [[Slag (G1)|Slag]]'s memories and when Megatron doublecrossed him, he ambushed Megatron with the Dinobots. However, Grimlock and the others were no match for Megatron, and they were knocked aside. Paleontology student [[Rachel Becker]] found Grimlock's footprints in the [[Cascade Mountain Range]], so she, [[Robert Paaswell|her professor]], and [[Marty Cooper|his assistant]] pitched tents to observe the area overnight. The Dinobots were indeed hiding nearby, and when Swoop brought Grimlock news of Optimus Prime's
death, Grimlock prepared to take leadership of the Autobots for himself. The Dinobot Commander interrupted a committee of high-ranking Autobots attempting to nominate a replacement, and he rudely nominated himself. Unsurprisingly, the Autobots were not impressed, and Grimlock was turned away. Grimlock got a chance to prove himself when [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] attacked the Ark. At first his plan was to hide in the forest, let Trypticon "soften up" the Autobots, remove the Decepticon, and impose leadership over the weakened faction, but Grimlock's doubts increased as the Autobots were pummeled. Additionally, he was surprised when Rachel Becker approached Grimlock with no fear, since he was certain that all humans were cowards. When Rachel's life was threatened by Trypticon, Grimlock attacked Trypticon himself, which signaled the other Dinobots to follow his lead. In the aftermath of his victory against the Decepticon intruder, the high-ranking Autobots decided that Grimlock had displayed all the desired traits of a great Autobot leader—wisdom, compassion, courage, charisma, and military skill. {{storylink|King of the Hill!}}

Unfortunately for the Autobots, Grimlock set about immediately picking out a crown for himself and affecting an unintelligent way of speaking. His first point of order was to steal back the assorted equipment and tools that the [[Mechanic (G1)|Mechanic]] had stolen from them shortly before his assumption of command. Blaster was placed in the variable voltage harness for his treason. Some time thereafter, Grimlock's Autobots stationed on the Ark met up with Autobots from Nebulos stationed on the ''[[Steelhaven (G1)|Steelhaven]]''. Grimlock was furious that the ''Steelhaven''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s Autobots were led by a human, [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]], and he challenged Spike's [[Binary bonding|binary bonded]] partner, [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fruitloop Multipuck]], to a duel for ultimate Autobot supremacy. Forktongue Maxiface was in no condition to fight, as he had suffered terrible damage recently at the hands of Shockwave, so Grimlock offered Blaster to fight in his stead. Both ships' crews unloaded onto Earth's [[Moon (moon)|moon]] to watch the fight, but Blaster and Grimlock's grudge match quickly rumbled past the horizon line. After exchanging blows, Grimlock and Blaster noticed explosions back at the ships' landing site, and agreed to a short truce to investigate. Indeed, Ratbat's Decepticons had ambushed the Autobots in their absence, but with the introduction of Blaster and Grimlock to what had been up to that point a massacre, the tide quickly turned. Grimlock's sword pierced the forcefield of the Decepticons' [[Club Con|flying island base]], and the Decepticons retreated. Believing these future Autobots were imposters, responsible for the apparent deaths of Optimus Prime and the other displaced Autobots, Fortress Maximus and Grimlock led a vengeful charge. Answering a distress call in the [[Arctic]], Grimlock and the Autobots found [[Buster Witwicky (G1)|Buster Witwicky]]... and a Decepticon ambush! After a number of casualties, a brittle truce was forged when it was discovered that this was all a setup by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] to divert attention away from his grab at the [[Underbase]]. Both factions found Starscream about to meet the Underbase in space, but Starscream was able to absorb enough Underbase energy to throw his ship into theirs. Starscream departed for Earth, to conquer the cities of [[New York City|New York]], [[Tokyo]], and [[Buenos Aires]], and Optimus had thoughtfully kept the Ark nearby to help ship everyone back to Earth. Grimlock and [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] led a team sent ahead to Tokyo to await Starscream. After the Underbase-powered Decepticon destroyed the Dinobots, Grimlock was quick to fire upon Starscream and scored one of the few consequential hits on the fearsome traitor. Grimlock hunted him down and bit at Starscream's leg, but Starscream was able to grab the Dinobot commander and place him between himself and "friendly" fire from the Decepticon [[Pretender]]s. {{storylink|Dark Star (issue)|Dark Star}} Grimlock perished, and was next seen undergoing futile repairs onboard the Ark. {{storylink|Guess Who the Mecannibals Are Having for Dinner?}}

Grimlock was brought back on-line by [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] using [[Pretender]] technology stolen from Megatron. {{storylink|All the Familiar Faces!}} While Grimlock, along with [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]] and [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], handily defeated Megatron's minions, he was unable to save Ratchet when [[Megatron's base]] exploded. {{storylink|Skin Deep}} Afterward, Grimlock, Jazz and Bumblebee briefly joined the Autobot resistance movement on Cybertron before attempting to return to Earth via [[Trans-Time Dimensional Portal|trans-time dimensional portal]]. [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]], seeking to crush the resistance's momentum, sent ''the latest incarnation of'' the [[Mayhem Attack Squad]] to destroy the three Autobot Pretenders. Infiltrating [[Autobase]], the three Decepticons sabotaged the portal, teleporting all six Transformers (and the [[Micromaster]] [[Rescue Patrol]]) deep into the heart of Cybertron, where the Autobots discovered the resting place of their god, [[Primus]]. {{storylink|Yesterday's Heroes!}}

Grimlock at first thought it was all a Decepticon trick and was [[Atechnogenesis|skeptical]] that the Transformers even had a god. When the [[Keeper (Transformer)|Keeper]] appeared, Grimlock demanded the ancient Transformer "prove it" by telling them the story of the Transformers' origin. The Keeper's story (complete with holographic slide-show) was suitably convincing, but unfortunately gave the Mayhem Attack Squad time to sneak up on the Autobots, and another battle ensued. The outnumbered Decepticons were no match for Grimlock and company, but [[Octopunch]]'s last-ditch shot ricocheted off the Dinobot's back, waking Primus. A few seconds too late, the Autobots in Autobase repaired the portal, sending the lost Transformers to Earth. Grimlock immediately demanded they find the Earth-based Autobots to warn them of [[Unicron]]. {{storylink|Primal Scream (issue)|Primal Scream}}

After rejoining Optimus Prime's forces, Grimlock, Jazz and Bumblebee formed a team in the search for the lost [[Matrix of Leadership|Creation Matrix]]. Traveling to [[VsQs]], where Optimus Prime's funeral barge had crashed, the three began to search an abandoned science station for any clue as to the Matrix's whereabouts. While Bumblebee searched the computer logs, Grimlock went looking for the science team—only to discover they had all been killed. Before the Autobots could formulate a plan, Thunderwing attacked. Grimlock's first reaction was to attack, but not even all three of them could defeat the Decepticon leader. Instead, they were "saved" by the [[Matrixspawn]], which became Thunderwing's new target. The three Autobots searched the wrecked station independently and recovered the Matrix. Low on [[Energon (fuel)|energon]], the three attempted to return to their shuttle, but the moon's heavy gravity slowed them down, allowing Thunderwing to overtake them, defeat the three weakened Autobots and claim the Matrix for his own. {{storylink|Dark Creation}}

After Thunderwing's defeat, the Autobots sent a shuttle to VsQs to rescue Grimlock and the others, who were low on energon and on the verge of [[stasis lock]]. Grimlock was none too grateful for his rescue, instead berating himself for failing to destroy Thunderwing and guilty that he was alive while the other Dinobots were still deactivated. However, without Ratchet or the Matrix, the Autobots knew of no way to bring back their fallen. Grimlock sought Optimus's permission to travel to [[Hydrus Four]] and investigate the rumors of the substance [[Nucleon]]. When Optimus refused, Grimlock stole a shuttle and the bodies of the Dinobots and went anyway, which everyone really should have seen coming. {{storylink|Eye of the Storm}}

Once on Hydrus Four, Grimlock sought out the medi-center on the island of [[Farooth]], where the well of Nucleon was kept. Along the way, he encountered the substance's [[Nucleon guardian|three guardians]], zombie-like mechanoids who attempted to bar visitors from tapping the Nucleon. Two engaged him in combat, but Grimlock dispatched them easily. Unlike destroying Decepticons, he could take no pleasure in his victories, which seemed pointless. He began to question his motives: Was he really trying to save the Dinobots, or just prove himself a better leader than Prime? By the time he reached the island of Farooth, Grimlock simply wanted the grim business done with.

At the well, Grimlock encountered the final guardian. The Hydrusian didn't want to fight, but instead warned him that Nucleon always came with unexpected side effects. To quell the doubts that had plagued him since his arrival, Grimlock decided to test the Nucleon on himself, plunging a hand into the well. Feeling a surge of power and no immediate side effects, Grimlock decided it had to be safe and went to work reviving the other Dinobots, ignoring the Hydrusian's parting
words, "Time will tell." {{storylink|The Pri¢e of Life!}}

With the Dinobots revived, Grimlock loaded up as much Nucleon as he could and returned to the Ark. {{storylink|...All This and Civil War 2}} The Dinobots found it empty, as Primus had teleported the Earth-bound Transformers back to Cybertron. Electing not to waste time looking for the others, Grimlock ordered [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]] to set course for Cybertron while Sludge and [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] pumped the Nucleon into the Ark's life-support pods. The Dinobots were unaware that the life-support pods also held Megatron, as Grimlock had departed before Ratchet's rescue. {{storylink|The Void! (US)|The Void!}}

Grimlock was the first Transformer to begin feeling the Nucleon's effects. Before he even left Hydrus Four, he began suffering erratic joint locks. He tried to hide the symptoms as long as he could, but after Unicron's defeat, they began to worsen, until his entire body seized up during a battle. [[Hi-Q]] came to his rescue, recognizing that the Nucleon was still transforming Grimlock's body. Hi-Q accelerated the process, as the Nucleon granted Grimlock a new, more powerful body, but at the cost of [[Action Master|his ability to transform]]. {{storylink|Still Life!}}

Optimus Prime died from injuries sustained in the war, and named Grimlock his chosen successor (although Grimlock still had to put up with Dumb Prowl as his self-appointed advisor and conscience). While Prowl began naive negotiations with the Decepticons for continued peace, Grimlock had his Dinobots arrange precautionary measures against any treachery. {{storylink|Exodus!}} Sure enough, the new Decepticon leader [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] sabotaged the Autobot ships on Cybertron and took off to loot and plunder with his army. Thanks to Grimlock, though, the Autobots not only had a set of ships held in reserve, but the Dinobots had also placed tracking devices on the Decepticon shuttles, leading the Autobot pursuit force right to the planet [[Klo]]. {{storylink|A Savage Circle}} Unfortunately, Grimlock's knack for forward-thinking ran a little short here, and he led his Dinobots into a trap as soon as the troops arrived on Klo. It seemed the Decepticons had discovered Grimlock's tracking device and anticipated their arrival. One massacre later and the only Autobots left alive were Grimlock, Prowl, Slag, Kup and Blaster. Despite their misfortunes, they managed to overcome the Decepticon hunting party sent after them, and carried the battle back to Bludgeon and his men. Luckily, a miracle arrived in the form of a resurrected Optimus Prime and his new friend, the awesomely powerful [[Last Autobot]], who began spontaneously reviving all the Autobots who fell in battle with the Decepticons. Facing an ever growing number of fully recharged Autobots, Bludgeon fled with his remaining Decepticons, and Grimlock and the Autobots stood victorious. {{storylink|End of the Road! In the months that followed the war on Klo, as more and more Autobots began to succumb to the Nucleon's effects and lose their ability to transform, Grimlock's guilt over his actions grew. When he heard the medical facilities on Hydrus-Four had reopened and discovered a means of reversing Nucleon's effect, he jumped at the chance. Taking his fellow Dinobots back there, Grimlock and his comrades ran smack into a Decepticon trap. Bludgeon and his crew had followed the Dinobots to Hydrus-Four and cut in ahead of them, taking control of the med-facility and installing a [[Holocaust Trigger]] device, which totally overwhelmed the Dinobots' equilibrium as they entered, knocking them out. Grimlock awoke hours later to find Bludgeon's sickly-skullhead grinning at him, as the Master of [[Metallikato]] planned to use the Nucleon to revitalize his warriors and bring the Great Megatron himself back to life. Luckily, Optimus Prime and Prowl arrived with a rescue party in time to stop the macabre resurrection ceremony from being completed. Bludgeon was destroyed, and Prime and Grimlock personally ripped apart the half-reanimated Megatron. When the Decepticons stole three nuclear missiles from the United State Federation to hold the world to ransom, Optimus Prime ordered that [[Bumblebee]], [[Jazz]] and [[Grimlock]] be given the power and abilities of Pretenders and sent to defeat the Decepticons. They arrived outside the Decepticon base, but were attacked by Pretender Starscream! Starscream wasn't a match for Grimlock, who ate one of his wings and knocked him out in three hits. After the coming of the [[Last Autobot]], much of the Autobot army scattered. Grimlock took command of a small commando team, leading strikes against [[Cybertronian (faction)|Decepticon outposts]] across the galaxy.

After encountering seventeen conquered worlds, cyberformed into "[[Eco-structuring|little Cybertrons]]," Grimlock realized the problem was greater than he had originally imagined and contacted Optimus Prime. After comparing notes in an abandoned base, the base was attacked by the flagship [[Twilight (G2)|''Twilight'']] and captured by [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]]. Jhiaxus told Optimus and Grimlock in no uncertain terms that the war had been practically over for millions of years; the Autobot/Decepticon war was just a sideshow while Jhiaxus's Decepticons had conquered the greater galaxy. While Optimus took Jhiaxus's description of their insignificance to heart, Grimlock refused to give up, bolstering the Autobot leader's spirits. Grimlock and Optimus subsequently burst free from their cell and led an escape from the ''Twilight''. {{storylink|War Without End!}}

Grimlock was part of a group of Autobots led by Optimus Prime when they clashed with the Decepticons on an alien world. There was word of a weapon of great power on this planet, and both sides struggled for supremacy over it. Autobot and Decepticon alike eventually fled the planet when the weapon's titanic guardian awoke. {{storylink|Ghosts}}

Grimlock clashed with Jhiaxus's Decepticons once again when the Autobots met them in battle in a planet amidst the [[K'tord Nebula]]. The fighting reached a fever pitch when it was discovered that their warrior natures were being manipulated by the parasitic organisms that lived on the planet. Though both sides carefully lowered their weapons, Grimlock did so with more reluctance. {{storylink|Primal Fear!}}

Despite his loyalty to Autobot ways, Grimlock still chafed under Optimus' leadership. Disobeying his orders (which somehow still surprised Optimus), Grimlock led a raiding party against Jhiaxus, seeking to destroy the ''Twilight''. Unfortunately, the Dinobot failed to anticipate Jhiaxus' increased security measures, and the mission cost [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] and [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] their lives. Their deaths forced Grimlock to question his methods and his attitude toward Optimus Prime. He admitted that he envied Prime for the loyalty he inspired in the Autobots, and that this, not the leadership of the Autobots, was what he'd truly desired. While Optimus Prime communed with the Matrix to learn more about Jhiaxus's origins, Grimlock, his Dinobots, and some other Autobots played war games on an Autobot base situated on a remote asteroid. Grimlock's command status proved invaluable when Optimus met Megatron on Earth alone, intending to form an alliance against Jhiaxus. Megatron beat Optimus half to death, and Prime only lived because Grimlock disobeyed orders and led an Autobot brigade to Earth. {{storylink|The Gathering Darkness}} After Megatron was beaten and humiliated by Jhiaxus, what was left of the Decepticon leader returned to Earth to reconsider Prime's alliance offer. Grimlock, seeing the Decepticon leader in their base, immediately attacked him, though Megatron was able to easily repel the Dinobot even in his sad condition. As Megatron asked Prime whether the Autobots had a muzzle for Grimlock, Prowl was forced to restrain Grimlock from further attacks. {{storylink|Tales of Earth Part Five}}

Grimlock joined Optimus Prime and the Autobots again on the planet [[Ethos]], where Jhiaxus's [[Cybertronian Empire]] had recently enacted genocide on the local population. Grimlock coordinated their search and rescue efforts with a headset. The Cybertronians were quickly upon them, and the Autobots found themselves greatly outclassed. Only the arrival of the Decepticons, much to the Autobots' embarrassment, helped turn the tide. {{storylink|Escalation!}}

Grimlock accompanied the Autobot/Decepticon alliance to the moon [[J'asik]], where they found another ravaged world. This time, the Cybertronian Empire's involvement was in doubt; the late inhabitants had been destablized at a molecular level. {{storylink|Swarm (issue)|Swarm}}

Eventually, the Empire attacked Autobase on Earth, with Grimlock gunning down scores of its troops. As Optimus Prime and Megatron prepared to investigate elsewhere, Optimus put Grimlock in charge during his absence. The alliance between Autobots and Decepticons gave Grimlock a chance to work alongside two new Rotor Force members, [[Leadfoot (G2)|Leadfoot]] and [[Manta Ray (G2)|Manta Ray]], both of whom were impressed with Grimlock's style. {{storylink|Total War!}}

As the battle continued, Grimlock and Razorclaw stopped for a moment to witness a mushroom cloud from a great distance as the ''Twilight'' nuked [[San Francisco]]. {{storylink|Dark Shadows!}}

But the Empire was the least of Grimlock's worries. Soon the [[Swarm (G2)|Swarm]] was upon them, a living bi-product of the Empire's dark origins, and with both Optimus and Megatron out of contact, it fell to Grimlock and the Predacon [[Razorclaw (G1)|Razorclaw]] to organise the Transformers in a desperate defensive action. They utilized a combination of shield generators, sky snipers, thermal mines, but nothing stopped the Swarm. However, their plans allowed the Autobots to hold out just long enough —barring a few casualties — for Megatron to arrive with the [[Rheanimum]] that ensured their survival.

During this operation, Manta Ray deliberately ignored Razorclaw's orders in favor of Grimlock's and, when the Predacon attempted to execute him for treason, Leadfoot cut Razorclaw in two, securing them as new recruits for the Autobots. In the end, Optimus Prime united with the Swarm and cleansed it of its dark impulses. After the Autobots' victory on Klo, Grimlock wasn't interested in "reconstruction" or a new "Golden Age of Cybertron". He knew from bitter experience that any Decepticon talking "peace" or "exile" was just biding their time to strike. So he gathered a like-minded crew and set off aboard the ''[[Graviton (Classics)|Graviton]]'' to make sure Bludgeon and his ilk never darkened Cybertron with their presence again. Naturally, the Dinobots came along with him, but so did many other Autobot warriors such as [[Nightbeat (G1)|Nightbeat]], [[Siren]], [[Huffer (G1)|Huffer]], [[Springer (G1)|Springer]], [[Elita One]], [[Strongarm (Classics)|Strongarm]] and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]].

The crew of the ''Graviton'' spent over a decade patrolling the outer reaches of the cosmos, hunting down Decepticons wherever they raised their ugly heads. Although Optimus Prime openly disagreed with Grimlock's mission, he never raised a servo to stop him. Then, one day, a transport signal reached the ''Graviton'' near the planet [[Vaine]]. Megatron had resurfaced on the planet Earth. Optimus Prime ordered Grimlock to join him on Earth opposing Megatron, and that was one order Grimlock would eagerly follow. Grimlock, Prime, [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]] and [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] encountered Megatron just as he was smashing his way through the human [[Armored Robot Hunters|RUNTs]] and a mysterious extra-dimensional arrival named [[Skyfall (Cybertron)|Skyfall]]. {{storylink|Crossing Over: Part 1}} Working off of some information from their new arrival, the Autobots tracked Megatron and his small band of Decepticons to a newly discovered power source in the Southern Hemisphere. Always eager to help, Grimlock grabbed the fleeing [[Scrapper (G1)|Scrapper]] and gave him a flying toss into the distance, where he landed atop of [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]]. The remaining Constructicons did their best to dogpile Grimlock into submission, but if even Devastator could not stop him, [[Furmanism|what chance did they have?]] None -- Grimlock broke free and made another Constructicon shotput toss, sending [[Bonecrusher (G1)|Bonecrusher]] careening into Megatron. {{storylink|Crossing Over: Part 5}}

[[Scavenger (G1)|Scavenger]] and [[Hightower (Classics)|Hightower]] finally managed to score a decent blow against Grimlock, but it didn't last. Grimlock's sudden departure from Autobase Prima for a rendez-vous didn't go unnoticed, and Mirage followed him to where Magnus was surveying a meeting between the two factions of Decepticons. Unfortunately, Mirage got noticed by [[Weirdwolf]]'s nose, and the surveillance became a rescue op. Swoop tracked the Decepticons to the Ark's latest crash site in the Yukon. Grimlock and his hunters rescued Mirage and eliminated several of the Decepticon targets in the process. Hailing from an earlier era of the Cybertronian wars, Grimlock arrived in the [[Cauldron]] and soon found the unlikely allies of [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] and [[Optimus Primal]]. Striker was overpowered and held prisoner beneath Grimlock's mighty boot. Using his spark telepathy, Primal was able to at least temporarily override Unicron's corruptive influence on Striker (although Grimlock remained somewhat unconvinced). Grimlock's concerns became academic as Reptilion returned with Unicron's other generals, [[Obsidian (BM)|Obsidian]] and [[Tankor (BM)|Tankor]]. Luckily, [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] and [[Trailbreaker (G1)|Trailbreaker]] managed to orchestrate a jailbreak among the Cauldron's other "guests", so Grimlock and Megatron soon had all the reinforcements they needed. The [[Matrix Templar]] known as [[Snarl (BM)|Snarl]] helped forge a connection with Primus, creating a way out for the escapees. Years ago, before the war, Grimlock was part of a cage-fighting arena. He and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] fought beside and against each other on numerous occasions. Starscream believed Grimlock was a natural born killer, but Grimlock really just carried a lot of rage and needed an outlet.

When the war began, Grimlock sided with the Decepticons. Then, after a while, he switched sides and went to the Autobots. Nobody is quite sure why or what happened. {{storylink|The War Within Preview}} He eventually became leader of a squad including [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Kup (G1)|Kup]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]].

By the time [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]] was killed and a new leader had to be chosen, the Autobots were losing the war, and Grimlock was growing impatient with the [[Council of Ancients]]' strategy. Grimlock called a secret meeting with Prowl, Jazz, and his running crew: If the new [[Prime (rank)|Prime]] wasn't up to doing what had to be done, then they'd do it for him—and take the Prime out in the process. {{storylink|The War Within issue 1|The War Within #1}}

Optimus Prime, having defeated a team of Decepticons by himself, still didn't settle Grimlock's nerves. Prime's decision to evacuate Cybertron did it; Grimlock had enough. He left and went to brood by himself. {{storylink|The War Within issue 2|The War Within #2}} Starscream and his Seekers dropped by while Grimlock was alone. Starscream baited Grimlock, telling him he was a Decepticon inside and was just in denial. He gave him a choice: go to [[Sector Zero-Six]] and help the Seekers take out the Autobot command post, or warn the post about their arrival. Grimlock, out of spite, instead evacuated the Autobots from the base and left the Decepticons a present: a bomb. {{storylink|The War Within Preview}}

While he was on his way back to [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]] to help with the defense, Prowl ordered him away, instead telling him to go find Optimus Prime. Grimlock decided that it was a good opportunity to give the new Prime a piece of his mind. {{storylink|The War Within issue 3|The War Within #3}} While he and the team went deep into Cybertron's core to find Prime, they found out about Megatron's plan to win the war and turn Cybertron into a mobile battle station with which to conquer the universe. Grimlock split up his team: He would go find Optimus Prime, and the rest of the team would shut down the transformation system for Cybertron. To his surprise, Prime abruptly was standing next to him. Prime ordered Grimlock to help him find Megatron. Grimlock shoved his [[Energo weapon|energo-sword]] into Prime's hands and gave clear instructions: If Megatron is the problem, then fix it. {{storylink|The War Within issue 5|The War Within #5}} When the crisis was over, Grimlock no longer questioned Optimus Prime. During the Dark Ages, Optimus Prime and Megatron were seemingly destroyed in a [[space bridge]] explosion, which created a crack in space through which the ancient being known as [[The Fallen]] emerged. With the loss of Optimus Prime, Grimlock broke off from the Autobots now led by Prowl and formed the [[Lightning Strike Coalition]]. Grimlock was targeted, along with [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]], [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] and [[Hot Spot (G1)|Hot Spot]], by The Fallen, who wished to use their apparently unique [[Spark]]s to help in his revival of [[Primus]], which would allow Unicron to locate him. {{storylink|Fragmentation}}

The Fallen sent [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]], [[Mindwipe (G1)|Mindwipe]] and [[Bugly]], who arranged for Grimlock to receive a communication between Jetfire and Shockwave. {{storylink|Devastation (Dreamwave)|Devastation}} Believing Jetfire was intending to defect, Grimlock headed for the meeting. Later, Grimlock served both as leader of the Dynobots and the right-hand bot to Ultra Magnus, who had taken control in Optimus' absence and had managed to secure a truce with Shockwave. Grimlock was less than happy about this, partly because he didn't trust the Decepticons, and partly because he had no idea what to do with himself in peacetime. Millennia later, the Ark and the ''[[Nemesis (G1)|Nemesis]]'' left Cybertron in search of new resources to fuel the war, but never returned. Grimlock and the Dynobots followed a [[Insecticon (G1)|group of Decepticons]] to a primitive world that would later be known to them as Earth, all of them looking for the lost Ark. The Dynobots assumed alternate forms similar to Earth's indigenous giant reptiles, dinosaurs, and fought off an attempted ambush by the small crew of Decepticons they had been tracking. {{storylink|Extermination}} Millions of years later in 1984, the other Autobots and Decepticons on Earth awakened and the Great War began anew. The Autobots and humans eventually defeated the Decepticons and all the Transformers were to be sent back to Cybertron on the ''[[Ark II]]''. However, the ship was destroyed during launch due to sabotage by General [[Robert Hallo]] and [[Lazarus|Adam Rook]], in the hopes of recovering the Transformers and reprogramming them to be war machines. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 1}}

At some point, Megatron captured the other four Dinobots, a fact which he used as leverage to get Grimlock to turn traitor and join the Decepticons after they were reactivated by Lazarus. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 3|Prime Directive #3}} Grimlock's only real contribution to the Decepticons was crushing unoccupied cars in [[San Francisco]] {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 5|Prime Directive #5}} and being beaten up, and beaten down by [[Trailbreaker (G1)|Trailbreaker]]. Grimlock's apparent allegiance to the Decepticons didn't last very long, though, as [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] soon showed up with his [[Triple Changer]]s. Grimlock's true loyalty became obvious when he stopped Blitzwing from blowing off Optimus's head by grabbing his tank turret and bending it into a pretzel with one hand. After that, Shockwave sent Megatron off to Cybertron, prompting Grimlock to rejoin the Autobots in the ''Ark''. {{storylink|New World Order}} When Optimus's group surrendered to Ultra Magnus, some of the Autobots remained on Earth, Grimlock among them. He travelled to the frozen north, and freed the other Dinobots from Megatron's holding tank. {{storylink|Brothers' Burden}}

Stealing a Decepticon shuttle, the Dinobots then headed for Cybertron, intending to free Optimus Prime and his group. After a rough landing in the [[Wastelands]], they acquired [[Sixshot|some transportation]] from [[Octane]] and hurried to Iacon. {{storylink|Cold War}} There, Grimlock did his part by leading a massive Dinobot assault on [[Shockwave's Tower]], before breaking off to take care of the Decepticon leader himself. Blitzwing again got in his way, and Grimlock was forced to battle both, a battle that was going his way until Ultra Magnus shot him in the face. {{storylink|Passive Aggression}} Perceptor repaired the Dinobot command, and Grimlock did his part for the rebellion by giving Hot Rod some back-up. For a third and final time, he fought Blitzwing, this time taking out the Decepticon with ease, grabbing him by the tank turret and throwing him into a [[Guardian robot|Guardian]]. Leaving the main conflict, Grimlock followed Shockwave, Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus into the citadel, and ended up saving the two Autobots, stating that he'd hate to lose the chance to pay back the "stuffy traitor". While the main group of Earth Autobots returned, the Dinobots remained on Cybertron to give Ultra Magnus some needed muscle. They were assigned to help Kup fortify the new Autobot bases on Cybertron's moons. {{storylink|The Route of All Evil}}

Grimlock was among the Autobots who were awakened by [[G.I. Joe (team)|G.I. Joe]] in [[1939]] after laying dormant on the [[Fera Islands]] for three million years. He was eager to start smashing Decepticons again, and probably would've smashed the humans as well if [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] hadn't been here to tell him they were friendly. While the other Autobots were a bit wishy-washy about helping G.I. Joe in their fight against [[Cobra]] and their Decepticon allies, Grimlock threw himself into battle almost immediately, using his [[World War II]]-era tank mode to destroy one or two incoming [[Rattler]]s. {{storylink|Transformed}}

With [[Roadblock (G.I. Joe)|Roadblock]] as company, Grimlock fought his way across the Fera Islands until he ran into [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]], whose earthquakes were too much for him and the other Autobot tanks to handle. {{storylink|Trial by Fire (issue)|Trial by Fire}} Grimlock was knocked off a cliff by Rumble's attacks, and as he was struggling to keep himself from falling to his doom, he urged Roadblock to save himself. However, the human refused to let Grimlock give up, and stayed behind to motivate him, drill sergeant style. While the human's words did give Grimlock newfound strength, the cliff still crumbled, and he and Roadblock fell. Thankfully, [[Superion (G1)|Superion]] saved them just in time, although Grimlock didn't enjoy feeling small in comparison to the combiner. {{storylink|Wolves}}

On the way to the Cobra [[Terrordrome]], Grimlock listened to [[Stalker (G.I. Joe)|Stalker]] being pessimistic about their chances of survival, and casually asked the human if he was a coward. Upon reaching the Terrordrome, Grimlock fought and defeated [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], having always hated him for his cowardly guerilla tactics back on Cybertron. Shortly thereafter, the Autobots and Joes came under attack from [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], and Roadblock suggested that Grimlock show the giant some real firepower... only for the Dinobot to be swatted aside like a fly. Grimlock and his team were transported to Earth's prehistoric past by a malfunctioning [[Teletran 3]]. A joint [[Cobra]]/[[G.I. Joe (team)|G.I. Joe]] team traveled through a time portal to bring them back. Unfortunately, Shockwave's Decepticons blocked their return. Just as Shockwave's victory appeared complete, [[Roadblock (G.I. Joe)|Roadblock]] and [[Lady Jaye]] successfully opened up the final time portal, and the humans returned, with some heavy artillery in the form of the five Autobots, now reformatted in huge, powerful dinosaur bodies. Grimlock took the lead by knocking Shockwave through a wall, and beating the tar out of the 'Cons, alongside his new Dinobots, their new abilities more than a match for the Decepticon forces. When the Decepticons retreated, Grimlock transformed and requested an audience with Optimus Prime. {{storylink|G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers II issue 4}}

Grimlock was part of the small team sent to help with the Joes' decommissioning of their Cybertronian mechs. Grimlock was more than a little vocal about his distaste for the post, and lack of interest in the humans. He was, willing to help the Joes fight Cobra, when the latter attacked en masse... even if he complained about helping the weak fleshlings. {{storylink|The Art of War issue 1}} When [[Cobra Commander]] was cornered in an underground facility, Grimlock did his part by terrifying him into talking. They were interrupted when [[Serpent O.R.]] appeared, and attempted to take control of both Grimlock, and [[G.I. Joe battle mech|Roadblock's robot]]. Grimlock resisted, but Roadblock's robot turned around and punched him in the face. Grimlock responded by ripping its arm off. {{storylink|The Art of War issue 2}}

As Serpent O.R. teleported to Cybertron, Grimlock's team pursued him, but ended up having to fight off [[cannibalizer]]s in a junkyard. Although Grimlock was shot in the face and knocked down, he soon got back up and continued the hunt for Serpent O.R., only to run into his new troops—the [[Predacon (G1)|Predacons]], [[Seacon (G1)|Seacons]] and [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]]. By the time the team arrived, they found that Serpent O.R. had stolen the [[Matrix of Leadership]], only to have his new "Serpentor Prime" body taken from him by Cobra Commander. Grimlock and Snake-Eyes attacked him, but were smashed into a wall by his tentacles and taken out of action. After [[Hawk (G.I. Grimlock is the leader of the D'''y'''nobots, a group of close knit hunters and guardsmen who, in no small part due to Grimlock's influence, prefer to work outside the Autobot rulebook.

At the start of Megatron's rise to power, the Dynobots turned out to an open casting call for Megatron's underground gladiatorial games, and got a good deal more respect from the Predacons than the other attendees. It turned out to be a recruitment drive for the Decepticon army. What they thought of that is unknown, as Autobot security forces raided the party soon after. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 3}}

He later met Slag again in a brig; Grimlock had angered a field commander but Slag had shot a vice-admiral in the back to con him into a frontal assault, so Slag won. Grimlock thought this Slag guy sounded like a good bloke, and the two of them discussed the formation of their own rule-breaking strike team. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 2}}

After [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] destroyed a cache of energon the Dynobots had been hoarding, causing them severe energon burns and equally severe humiliation, they swore revenge. So, against orders from Optimus Prime, they followed Shockwave when he left Cybertron to stabilize "[[ultra-Energon]]" deposits he had sent to other worlds as a precaution against the depletion of Cybertron's own energon reserves.

When Shockwave reached his first destination—Earth, at the end of the last Ice Age—the Dynobots destroyed his ship, but Slag revealed that the high energon levels of the planet would put them in stasis lock, since they hadn't come prepared like Shockwave. Slag then came up with the idea that they should scan the local life forms and create alt-modes based on those animals, but with synthetic flesh coatings to protect against the high levels of energon radiation. Grimlock was
completely against the idea, but since Slag couldn't come up with something better, he relented. However, he refused to take on the form of the weak mammalians that dominated the planet, demanding "something with some... bite." Scanning fossil deposits, Slag found the remains of some [[Dinosaur|extinct reptilian animals]] and brought up a holographic representation of one to see if Grimlock approved. What popped up was a ''Tyrannosaurus rex'', which Grimlock seemed to fall in love with the moment he saw it. The choice made, Grimlock took the Tyrannosaur as his altmode and had Slag find more dinosaurs as templates for the rest of the Dynobots.

On teleporting down to the planet's surface to confront Shockwave, they gained an initial advantage, as Shockwave's logic was unable to comprehend the effort and risks they had taken for their revenge. However, when Shockwave recognized this weakness, he shut down his logic processors and executed a "rage" program to enable him to operate on pure instinct. He shrugged off the Dynobots' attacks and beat them severely, ending the assault by burning off their organic coatings.
Unable to accept another defeat, Grimlock transformed to robot mode and fought against his imminent [[Stasis lock|stasis lock]] to no avail.

However, before leaving the Dynobots' ship, he had enabled a "dead man's switch" designed to take Shockwave with them if they were defeated. When he entered stasis lock, this failsafe activated, firing on a nearby dormant volcano and causing an eruption which buried Shockwave and the Dynobots under ash and lava. Thousands of years later in 2007, the [[human]] organization [[Skywatch]] took over jurisdiction of the dig site and excavated Shockwave and the Dynobots. {{storylink|Escalation issue 5}}

When the [[Reaper]]s attacked the Decepticons, Skywatch decided to awaken the most advanced of their "Eureka Six", which turned out to be Grimlock. {{storylink|Devastation issue 5}}

Grimlock's reactivation was sabotaged by an agent of the [[Machination]] and when he awoke, they had no control over him. He escaped the facility, confused and angry. His escape was engineered by the head of the Machination, [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], who wanted Grimlock to join him in the Machination plot to dominate the Earth by running interference and delaying Megatron's plans long enough for the Machination to put their plans into action.

Grimlock considered for a second, but refused the offer for two reasons: he could turn Scorponok in to Ultra Magnus for redemption, and as revenge for Scorponok once robbing an installation the Dynobots were guarding. The two fought and Scorponok quickly gained the upper hand, mostly due to his [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmaster]] upgrade. Grimlock was able to activate his transporter chip, which beamed him back to his ship, the ''[[Skyfire (ship)|Skyfire]]'', which was buried deep in ice somewhere. Grimlock hoped he could use the ship to find the other Dynobots. {{storylink|Spotlight: Grimlock}}

Finding himself trapped, both on a useless ship and in a less than inconspicuous form, Grimlock was forced to try and contact some of his less reputable acquaintances in an attempt to get the ''Skyfire'' into some sort of working order. Meanwhile, the Machination had tracked him down and had sent their [[Sunstreaker clone|Tsunami Unit]] to apprehend him. Grimlock's early warning system detected them, and he circled round as they began to attack, bursting from the ice and transforming. The battle very quickly turned in his favor with four of the clones falling in the opening moments. The surviving Headmasters were rather shaken, but managed to fulfill their mission: attach a device which would [[Orbital jump|orbital bounce]] him to Nevada, near Skywatch's base. Grimlock materialized in the middle of a busy street in [[Fallon]]. As a car crashed into his toe, he realized things had just gone from bad to worse. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 1}}

Grimlock knew Scorponok was trying to deliberately set him up as a rampaging monster, but ''didn't'' expect his fellow Dynobots to be sent to take him down! He was able to fight them all off but unable to break their reprogramming by appealing to their team ethos ... and when they ''did'' regain sentience and memory, it was because Scorponok let them so they could get pissed off at the knowledge Grimlock had set up a "dead man's switch" ''without'' informing them. Grimlock's defence was that such a sneaky, amoral and rule-breaking act was what the Dynobots were ''all about'', which surprisingly worked. While saying this, he grudgingly and with much moaning saved a human from burning to death. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 2}}

Convinced he'd brought his team round, Grimlock began issuing orders, only to be met by an icy silence. Swoop spoke for the group, saying his trust was hard earned and Grimlock tossed it away. Disgusted he abandoned the team, prompting the others to follow. Grimlock tried pleading with them, then turned in a huff, stating he'd be better off on his own. He was interrupted by the arrival of the Sunstreaker clones, who blasted him in the chest. Enraged, he vented his frustrations on the clones until their numbers began to tell. He was saved by the arrival of the other Dynobots, who felt that whatever had happened, they were still a team. However, they were overwhelmed by the sheer number of clones, until the arrival of the "help" Grimlock had requested earlier: the [[Monsterbot]]s. Seeing the newcomers take the fight to the enemy, Grimlock extolled his unit to show the Monsterbots how it's ''really'' done. Decimated and demoralized, the surviving Machination clones escaped with their lives. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 3}}

Aboard the Monsterbots' ship, the Dynobots wondered why Grimlock would side with the outcasts. They gave Grimlock a stern look when he exited the cockpit. The Dynobots didn't see the point of fighting Scorponok, but Grimlock said that Scorponok made it their fight when he turned the Dynobots against him. Snarl disagreed, saying that it had always been Grimlock's fight, that he and the other Dynobots went along with him, and that it was now Grimlock's wounded pride at stake. After the Monsterbots blasted away the defenses, Grimlock exited the ship, saying that there was no way he could let this go, and that with or without the Dynobots, there would be a reckoning for Scorponok. The Dynobots decided that arguing was pointless and followed Grimlock. When [[Hunter O'Nion]] pulled the cords from [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]]'s head, shutting him down, the clones ceased to function. Sludge cried out in victory, but the moment was short-lived as Scorponok blasted Sludge into stasis. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 4|Maximum Dinobots #4}}

Grimlock stared down at Sludge's dead body, brooding about how it was his fault Sludge was dead... while a battle between Scorponok and Shockwave (for rights of revenge upon Grimlock) raged on around him. Eventually Snarl, Slag, and Swoop decide to get to the Monsterbots' ship while the getting was good, but Grimlock stayed behind with Sludge. Grimlock tried infusing some of his [[spark]] energy into Sludge to revive him, but it seemed to have no effect. Shockwave got the upper hand and let Scorponok escape, and in frustration, Grimlock attacked Shockwave. Grimlock and Shockwave were too busy fighting to notice the return of Slag, Snarl, and Swoop, who reasoned that, while helping Grimlock might not be much of a cause, it still beat being no better than the Monsterbots. They were noticed by Sludge, who seemed to have recovered due to Grimlock's treatment after all. The four of them dove into the fray proper, but Grimlock ordered them to go after Scorponok instead. When [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] was about to get squished by Scorponok, the remaining Dynobots showed up in just the nick of time. At Hot Rod's urgings, Swoop severed the connections keeping Scorponok's head conscious. Grimlock in the mean time had found out Shockwave was using their battle to stall for time so that Soundwave could free him from Skywatch's control. The Decepticon attempted to abandon the fight, but Grimlock stubbornly refused to let him walk away, and rolled out a grenade, which incapacitated them both.

By this time [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] had arrived and taken Scorponok into custody. Grimlock and Shockwave were both arrested and taken off-world. Ultra Magnus later told Grimlock that having Scorponok and Shockwave in custody could help offset Grimlock's own sentence. Grimlock wasn't interested, asking only that the blame was put squarely on him and that the other Dynobots' warrants were cancelled. Magnus agreed, and Grimlock was left to muse on the fact that Sludge and his team were alive and well, thanks to him. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 5|Maximum Dinobots #5}}

Grimlock was taken to [[Garrus-9]]. However, shortly afterward, [[Overlord (Masterforce)|Overlord]] and the [[Predator (subgroup)|Predators]] launched a devastating assault on the detention facility, killing or capturing most of the Autobot guards. When the [[Wrecker]]s broke into the jail in an attempt to liberate the facility, Kup and Guzzle were sent to maximum security to fetch Grimlock as back-up. However, upon reaching his cell, they found it was empty. The Decepticon [[Snare]] revealed that Grimlock was "long gone". When asked if Overlord had killed him, Snare replied that instead he had kept him alive, sending him footage of the pit fighting, forcing to watch the horrific events while he was powerless to intervene. Grimlock was less than thrilled about being forced to go through the [[Maximal]] downsizing. To add insult to injury, the resulting peace meant he had no outlet for his warlike tendencies. As such, he frequently volunteered for any dangerous, potentially risky or outright suicidal missions, and when forced on to a science or exploration vessel, he preferred to spend the entire trip in stasis, rather than dealing with the prolonged inactivity. He had a personalized reformatting chip installed that deliberately seeks out only the strongest, deadliest beast modes (alive or extinct) on a planet. {{storylink|Beast Wars Sourcebook}}

Grimlock was among the ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'''s protoforms when the ship crashed on Earth. When [[Razorbeast]] and [[Optimus Minor]] were attempting to "rescue" [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] from [[Magmatron]], the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]] detected a spark signature that was apparently off the scale, big and mad. Grimlock showed up and acted as the perfect distraction, making ''very'' short work of the Predacons. (Apparently, he was in a very bad mood after waking up and took it out on the Preds.) Magmatron offered Grimlock the chance to withdraw, and when the incredulous Grimlock refused, the Predacon general attacked. Magmatron narrowly arose as the victor by use of his triple beast modes. Grimlock was knocked out, but later helped to construct the Maximals' new base. {{storylink|The Gathering issue 4}}

Later, when [[Prowl II|Prowl]] remarked they had work to do on Earth, with [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]]'s Predacon militia still a threat, [[Wolfang (Maximal)|Wolfang]] reminded him that they had Grimlock on their side. {{storylink|The Ascending issue 1}} The bot in question was patrolling the jungle around the base at the time and bumped into the three-mech team of [[Manterror]], [[Retrax]] and [[Snapper]]. He only noticed Manterror and Retrax however, as Snapper was being crushed under his right foot at the time. While Retrax rolled for his life, Manterror had to face Grimlock on his own, and lost his wings for his trouble. This little group turned out to be a distraction, however, intended to lure the Maximals' big gun away while Ravage led an all-out strike on the base.

In their next sortie to lay low an armored coach, the two highwaymen ran afoul of yet more [[Ratchet (Animated)|celestial]] [[Bumblebee (Animated)|knights]], who convinced the tractable trash-toting titan to turn 'gainst the valiant Archer. The befuddled behemoth didst then try to "catch" his former cohort by hurling him high into yon blue sky. * Four of the original five Dinobot designs served as the templates for the "Geisters", recurring villainous henchmen on the Takara/Sunrise co-production ''[[Brave (franchise)|Brave Exkaiser]]''. In what might be called a vision of things to come, the four were once briefly fused into a single robot called "Mad Geister" (マッドガイスター ''Maddo Gaisutā''). However, because each Geister controlled a portion of the combined body—and they had the accumulated brain power of a Froot Loop—this ended rather badly for them. In a more successful (if not [[Mega-Dinobot|also prescient]]) later development, the Geisters learned to merge in groups of two, with Ptera Geist and Thunder Geist forming the centaur-esque "Pteder" (プテダー ''Putedā'') and Horn Geist and Armor Geist forming "Hormor" (ホーマー ''Hōmā'').
* Hasbro has stated repeatedly, even after the publication of "The Beast Within", that there is no Dinobot combiner. It isn't clear whether this is a strategic retcon or simply Hasbro being unaware of the comic's existence.
* A [[Dinobot (PCC)|Dinobot]] combiner team exists. However, it is not the original Dinobots, nor do they form the Beast.
