I have an observation that might move their absence out of continuity error territory: They did not originally have animal-based modes. With the Dinobots, Sky Lynx, the Predacons, the Terrorcons, Ratbat, Slugfest, Overkill, and Ravage, there is no evidence in cartoon continuity that any of them originally had non-beast alternate or primary modes. The cartoon-continuity Dinobots were in fact dinosaur-alt from the very beginning. Laserbeak, on the other hand, was seen to originally have an oval-hulled jet as his primary mode, and the same can be presumed for Buzzsaw.
