6:52 PM - At [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream's]] command, [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]], [[Blackout (Movie)|Blackout]] and [[Brawl (Movie)|Devastator]] have risen from beyond the grave—and the Autobots can't stop them!

Less than half an hour ago - [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]] [[Transformers (2007)|was killed]]. Starscream nominates himself supreme commander of the Decepticons now that there's no one around to object, though he notes he'll probably need some Decepticons alive to command. Noticing a few rampaging [[Allspark Mutation|Allspark Mutations]], he systematically kills them, harvests their [[AllSpark (Movie)|All Spark]] energy, and uses it to turn the Decepticon corpses into [[Zombie|zombies]] under his direct command.

Back in the present, the Autobots have no idea how to stop the relentless zombies, and [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] has no idea how they can possibly be walking around. [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus]] states that they can't let them continue unchecked, but as Ratchet is smacked aside, he's forced to admit he doesn't know what to do—"Allspark {{sic}} help me, [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]], I just ''don't know!''". With his power still drained from fighting Megatron, he is similarly unsure how long he can keep fighting...

Luckily, Ratchet works out the zombies are being controlled by corrupted All Spark energy and tells the others to target their weapons on such energy signatures. Doing so, they swiftly kill the zombies. However, Starscream's escaped from the city and still has several sources of All Spark power...
[[Image:Star Screams logo.JPG|left|150px|thumb|Don't blame Titan, you voted for this guy.]]
"I personally don't care for this meat-sack human you call 'Furman' - he sounds too much like a [[Maximal]] to me. Perhaps one that looks like a strategically shaved ape. Especially on the head."

"I also enjoy [this comic], especially watching it burst into flames when I hit my afterburners."

"Hairs on your arms? Urgh, you carbon-based creatures with your various fluids disgust me."

"The pitiful humans at Titan Magazines have been warned about their Autobot propaganda. Much more of this drivel and we'll destroy the entire office."

"This 'mum' you speak of sounds much like Megatron; she clearly lacks any clarity of vision and has no sense of priority. Perhaps you should pledge yourself to another leader, one more flexible and gifted with foresight..."

==Items of note==
* The cover is a stock image of Starscream, despite Titan having paid Geoff Senior to do a zombie Decepticon image. It is possible this was originally going to be a cover, but Titan decided to change it at the last moment for commercial considerations (an even more last-minute change of covers would happen for [[Transformers Comic issue 18|#18]]).
* For some reason, the dead Decepticons have turned grey. This may just be Robin Smith's coloring decision rather than anything written into the script. (A whole lot of grey in issue 1...)
* This issue contains the first post-movie comic strip by any company. It is set between the movie's final battle and the dumping of the Decepticon corpses into the ocean.
[[Image:StarscreamsMilitiaSodaMachine.jpg|thumb|200px|Taaaaste the reeeaaal thiiiing...]]
*This story features an Allspark-animated soda can machine, but it's not clear if it is supposed to be [[Dispensor]], or if it's another one that we didn't see before that was just inspired by Dispensor's appearance in the film. It sure as heck doesn't ''look'' like Dispensor, but with this art...
* The All Spark-animated machines have solidified All Spark energy within them that can be removed and used for other things; it resembles a small, red All Spark.
* Megatron was killed around 6:27 PM.

==Errors==
* The story says the battle is taking place in "downtown [[Los Angeles]]," even though it should be [[Mission City]].
* Barricade is among the dead Decepticons reanimated by Starscream. Except, whoops, [[Barricade (Movie)|he was never killed in the finished film]], he's hanging around not-dead in [[The Reign of Starscream Issue Number One|Reign of Starscream]], and Star Screams would state in later issues that Barricade was alive. Sod it, we'll just claim "alternate timeline"...

'''Protoforms''' consist of an unspecified, free-flowing, metallic matter layered over basic robotic systems. In many universes, a protoform is the first stage in a [[Transformer]]'s [[life cycle]]. These protoforms only await a life-giving [[spark]] and the alt-form information necessary to transform them into fully functional, living Transformer beings. Often, protoform modes are used to transport Transformers on intergalactic journeys.

Protoforms are transported or stored in [[stasis lock]], in which state they look like smooth, robotic humanoids. When not in stasis lock, protoforms are a roiling mass of liquid metal around their internal frame.<ref>Protoform states seen in "[[The Spark]]".</ref>

In some universes, existing Transformers can place their sparks in a newly created protoform in order to assume a new form, or to recreate their old one. This is one way of rapidly repairing even the most extreme damage, by virtue of totally replacing the body.

[[Image:Stasispod.jpg|right|200px|thumb]]
Protoforms are often contained within [[stasis pod]]s and dropped into unexplored worlds. The ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'' carried many such stasis pods for exploration reasons, and also [[Rampage (BW)|Protoform X]], a failed attempt to create an immortal spark, which was intended for dumping somewhere barren. When the ship was shot down over prehistoric [[Earth]], [[Optimus Primal]] ordered the protoforms on board ejected into space. {{storylink|Beast Wars (Part 1)}} A while later, when the first stasis pod crashed to the ground, [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]] was able to use a laser link to activate the pod's [[DNA scanner]], allowing it to scan for compatible life-forms and reformat the protoform inside into [[Tigatron]]. {{storylink|Fallen Comrades}}

While [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] was in her protoform state, [[Tarantulas]] was able to install a [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] [[shell program]], turning her against the [[Maximal]]s. {{storylink|Double Jeopardy}} On a later occasion, [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] worked frantically to save another protoform and the [[spark]] it contained, ultimately succeeding and bringing forth [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]]. {{storylink|The Spark}} Another attempt on Tarantulas's part to create a third spider Predacon failed when it turned out that the stasis pod had already scanned a life form, and metamorphosed the protoform into [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]]. {{storylink|Spider's Game}}

The destruction of the [[Vok]] [[Planet Buster]] knocked the remaining stasis pods out of orbit. Two were damaged on impact, reformatting the protoforms within into [[Fuzor]]s. A third pod found by the Maximals contained a "[[blank]]" — a protoform with no spark. {{storylink|Coming of the Fuzors (Part 1)}} Rhinox was able to bring back Optimus Primal from the dead using the blank protoform. {{storylink|Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)}} Protoform X also turned up, crashed in a swamp, and was able to be converted into a Predacon by [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]. {{storylink|Bad Spark}} One protoform was twisted by a badly malfunctioning pod into the being which became known as [[Transmutate (character)|Transmutate]]. {{storylink|Transmutate (episode)|Transmutate}}

A blank protoform was used by Megatron in a grand experiment, the ultimate fruit of which was a [[Transmetal 2]] recreation of [[Dinobot II|Dinobot]]. {{storylink|Feral Scream Part 1}}

[[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] warriors, who look like protoforms, were shown moving about the Predacon warship using their own power, though they were not shown to speak or have any kind of personality. After the Predacons had gathered enough information about the machines of [[Gaea]]'s past, they then fed the information into the protoforms via energy waves. The protoforms were then altered into the [[Autoroller|Autorollers]]. {{storylink|White Lion, Run!}}

The atmosphere of the Planet Gaea could have caused the protoforms to rust. {{storylink|The New Forces Arrive!}} Despite this, a protoform was seen on the bridge of the ''[[Galvaburg II]]'' well into their visit to the planet. {{storylink|The Insect Corps Arrive}}

{{Note|Given that the Autorollers were apparently extant veterans, this would be a case similar to that of [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]] and [[Tigatron]] in "[[Dawn of Future's Past]]", in which an already living Cybertronian had been downloaded into a new protoform body.}}
Autobots (and possibly Predacons) can change into a protoform state during long journeys, presumably to conserve energy. Attributes of an Autobot's original form remain in whatever new form the being takes. For instance, [[Scourge (RID)|Scourge]] retained the ability to detect [[O-Part]]s.

A downside to the protoform process is that it leaves the Autobots vulnerable to tampering. [[Megatron (RID)|Megatron]] was able to use his [[spark]]'s energy to turn Autobot protoforms into [[Decepticon|malevolent entities]]. {{storylink|The Decepticons}}
Protoforms are the first stage of Transformer life, which is usually followed by [[primary programming]].

===Live-action films===
[[Image:Movie OptimusPrime protoform.jpg|right|180px|thumb|Optimus Prime's protoform]]

Protoforms grow and survive by feeding inside [[energon (fuel)|energon]] wombs. ''{{storylink|Revenge of the Fallen (film)|Revenge of the Fallen}}'' Protoforms are more than just the first stage of a Transformer's life, they are the "base" form that exists inside each robot. Protoforms are made of an ultra-dense, liquid metal material and are extremely hard to damage.

In the rare case they are not actively practicing their natural proclivity for chameleon-like disguise (usually only when engaged in interstellar travel), Transformers shed their exo-structure and return to their protoform state. This protoform is capable of transforming into its [[transition form]]: an armored, cometary shape capable of interstellar travel. Upon landing on a new world and transforming back into a protoform, the Transformer immediately begins [[trans-scan]]ning for new alternate forms to adopt. When one is chosen, the protoform draws on its own ultra-dense substance and any extraneous matter nearby to generate a new exostructure disguise. ''{{Storylink|Transformers: The Movie Guide}}''

[[Image:ROTF Protoform with weapon.jpg|thumb|left|180px|A Decepticon protoform]]
[[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]]'s attempts to breed a new army were met with failure because of low energon supplies, and the "[[hatchling]]s", as they were affectionately termed, were dying. When many Decepticons arrived on Earth with [[The Fallen]] to claim the [[Sun]], they did not bother assuming alternate modes, and remained in their protoforms. ''{{storylink|Revenge of the Fallen (film)|Revenge of the Fallen}}''

{{Note|"Protoform" is used as a term for the movie continuity Transformers' Cybertronian forms, although this is also a chosen appearance for the [[self-regenerating molecular armor]] formed by the protoform.}}
{{-}}

===''Animated'' cartoon===
[[Image:TransWarpedProtoform.jpg|thumb|right|My Meebas live inside this tube, we grow and change with help from you!]]
New Transformers are created by putting protoforms into "protoform moulds" — pre-built robot shells, which they "fill" out, and they are then granted sparks. (Although AllSpark fragments serve the same purpose) {{storylink|Endgame, Part I}} The same basic moulds could be used for multiple protoforms, leading to [[Retool|similarities]] in [[body-type]] and transformation schemes. {{storylink|Autoboot Camp}} {{storylink|Endgame, Part I}}. If they are granted sparks without involving a protoform mould, they apparently "collapse" into a small, baby-like form until they can scan something to base a body on. {{storylink|TransWarped}}

"Protoform" seems to be a derogatory nickname amongst Cybertronians, translating roughly to "baby" or "kid". The word "protoform''ed''" has been used, presumably in reference to a protoform's coming into existence.

A large number of protoforms were in the care of [[Yoketron]], either to be Cybertron's next generation or a last resort if [[Omega Supreme (Animated)|Project Omega]] failed. [[Lockdown (Animated)|Lockdown]] went on to attack and steal most of them {{storylink|Five Servos of Doom}} for the Decepticons, who would place them inside the ''[[Nemesis (Animated)|Nemesis]]''. {{storylink|Endgame, Part I}}

A protoform which had been granted a spark without involving a protoform would somehow appear in [[Isaac Sumdac]]'s lab. After Isaac touched it, the protoform became [[Sari Sumdac]], a technorganic Transformer. {{storylink|TransWarped}}

According to [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]], [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]] eats protoforms for breakfast. {{storylink|Transform and Roll Out}}

The protoforms stored on the ''Nemesis'' were used by [[Starscream (Animated)|Starscream]] to create a barrage of clones of himself. The spark of life was provided by slivers of the [[AllSpark (Animated)|AllSpark]] fragment embedded in Starscream. {{storylink|A Fistful of Energon}} More clones were constructed later: [[Skywarp (Animated)|Skywarp]], [[Slipstream (Animated)|Slipstream]], [[Sunstorm (Animated)|Sunstorm]], [[Thundercracker (Animated)|Thundercracker]], and [[Ramjet (Animated)| Ramjet]]. {{storylink|A Bridge Too Close, Part I}}

Megatron used a few of the stolen protoforms and an AllSpark fragment to create the [[Lugnut Supreme]]s. Starscream used one to create himself a new body. {{storylink|Endgame, Part I}}

After the misuse of so many protoforms by Megatron and Starscream, the Autobots ultimately recovered only three of the stolen protoforms. {{storylink|Endgame, Part II}}

==Toys==
Toys representing transitional protoform modes have been made for several characters from the [[Movie (franchise)|live-action Movie]] universe:
===Transformers (2007)===
[[Image:Movie ProtoformOptimusPrime toy.jpg|right|300px|thumb|Munkytruck feet!]]
*'''Protoform [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]]''' (Deluxe Class, 2007), later [[Redeco|redecorated]] as Protoform Optimus Prime Fusion Cluster Edition. This form is usually Optimus Prime's pre-Earth body in [[IDW Publishing]]'s ''Transformers'' movie prequel comics.

*'''Protoform [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]]''' (Deluxe, 2007), later redecorated as Protoform Starscream Fusion Cluster Edition. This form is usually Starscream's pre-Earth body in IDW's ''Transformers'' movie prequel comics.

* '''Trans Scanning [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]]''' (2008)
* '''Trans Scanning Optimus Prime''' (2008)

:Both Trans-Scanning Bumblebee and Optimus Prime feature a highly articulated protoform robot mode that can transform into its comet-like transition mode. Snap-on armour based on their Earth robot and vehicle modes represent the characters after they have trans-scanned vehicles.

===Robot Heroes===
*[[Robot Heroes (toyline)|Robot Heroes]] [[Jazz (Movie)|Protoform Autobot Jazz]] vs. [[Brawl (Movie)|Decepticon Brawl]]

==Notes==
* [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]]'s Cybertronian form depicted in ''Transformers'' [[Movie (franchise)|Movie]] comics and toys greatly resembles a protoform, presumably because it was Hasbro's only reference for an alien Autobot appearance.
:''Spanish title:'' '''El Caballero en la Oscuridad'''

==Synopsis==
As the [[Grand Mal|big floating head]], [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]'s newest body, drifts overhead, [[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream]] searches through a derelict region of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] for his former friend, the organic [[Noble|Savage/Noble]]. However, his search is cut short by [[Jetstorm (BM)|Jetstorm]] and [[Thrust (BM)|Thrust]].

[[Image:DarkestKnight Rattrap's invention.jpg|left|thumb|200px]]
Back at the Maximal base, [[Rattrap]] talks to [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] about his newest invention, combining a [[spark extractor]] with a [[DNA scanner]]. This process, he hopes, could someday be used to restore any of the captured sparks they recover into Transformer bodies. [[Optimus Primal]] and [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] arrive, wondering what's happened to Nightscream. Nobody has seen him for a while, so the team head aboveground to find out where he's gone. However, Blackarachnia has a lingering fascination with Rattrap's new device.

The Maximals find Nightscream surrounded by a back of [[Motorcycle Drone|cycle drones]] and other [[Vehicon (BM)|Vehicon]]s. A fight to rescue their young member begins. Cheetor uses his blades to glide through the air, fighting the [[Sonic Attack Jet]]s all the while. Rattrap outraces several more cycle drones. Cooking up her own plot, Blackarachnia places Rattrap's device on Jetstorm, hoping to free his spark and reformat him.

Megatron, in his gigantic head, uses his gravity beams to capture Optimus and Cheetor, ending the conflict quickly. Nightscream is left behind, at the mercy of Thrust. Luckily, he is protected by Savage/Noble, who uses both of his tails to damage Thrust. Rattrap sees the strange dragon haul Nightscream's unconscious body away and, suspecting Savage intends to consume the younger Maximal, follows.

[[Image:DarkestKnight Silverbolt reflection.jpg|right|thumb|200px|"Kermit, I would like to have a word about injecting some culture into this show."]]
Blackarachnia leads Jetstorm deeper underground. The jet crashes through one of her webs and into a pool of [[organic goo|organic fluid]]. With the general restrained, the DNA scanner Blackarachnia placed onto him activates and begins to detect local fossils. The scanner passes by several other bones before locking onto a suitable candidate: a skeleton of a prehistoric, condor-like creature. After a painful metamorphosis, the Vehicon once known as Jetstorm is destroyed, and the [[Maximal]] [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] is reborn. He becomes aware of himself and is surprised by his new, [[technorganic]] form. Shocked, disgruntled, and angry, he flies out of the cave in which he was brought back, leaving a confused Blackarachnia behind.

Confronting the renegade Maximal atop a skyscraper, Blackarachnia discovers a change in her lover. Instead of the corny, phrase-spouting 'bot of prehistoric Earth, this new, angry Silverbolt loathes himself. Blackarachnia tries to remind the Maximal of the heroic personality he used to be, but Silverbolt (who is no longer silver) no longer has any connection to those ideals that once defined him. He comes along with Blackarachnia on a trip to rescue Optimus Primal and Cheetor not out of concern for his Maximal pals, but only as a way to confront his former master, Megatron.

Nightscream awakens in an abandoned warehouse, now serving as Savage/Noble's "den". The creature, in his "Noble" form, provides a metallic apple for Nightscream to feed on. Noble has lost his former mental skills, but still seems to like Nightscream and remember him. Rattrap tries to rescue Nightscream quietly but catches Noble's attention. Confused, Noble shifts into his Savage form, causing Nightscream and Rattrap to cheese it.

[[Image:DarkestKnight Optimus Cheetor interrogation.jpg|left|thumb|200px|"I'm a pepper! Don't you want to be a pepper, too?"]]
Inside of the Grand Mal, Cheetor and Optimus are interrogated for information on the Oracle and how Megatron can use it to manipulate the Sparks he holds captive. Blackarachnia and Nightscream arrive in the same chamber, where Megatron manifests an image of himself, a hologram of the Grand Mal made out of floating masses of data. He explains why he selected Silverbolt's spark to be made into a new general: He believed Silverbolt's sense of honor would let him stay true to Megatron's Vehicon ideology. Blackarachnia argues, hoping Silverbolt understands that friendship and love are more important.

Silverbolt rejects Megatron's dogma and transforms into his new robot mode. His throwing blades heavily damage Megatron's insides. Freed, Primal orders a retreat, but Silverbolt feels it would be better to [[Furmanism|fight and die]]. Blackarachnia uses one of her abilities to stun him so she can drag him out.

[[Image:Blackarachniasilverboltdarkestknight.jpg|right|300px|thumb|A sunset on Cybertron? Crazy!]]
Rattrap and Nightscream are still running from Savage when they find Thrust and his drones standing in their way. The Maximals let Savage take care of the drones, while Silverbolt tosses away Thrust into the water. Primal welcomes Silverbolt back into the Maximals, but the bird just leaves the Maximals, not yet ready to be part of the team. Nightscream argues that Savage/Noble still has the qualities of a good guy inside of him, and Primal decides that the best thing to do is to wait.

That morning, sitting on a skyscraper, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt have another discussion, in which he reveals how he enjoyed being a Vehicon, without having to follow his code of honor. Despite this, Blackarachnia is still ready to reach out to him, and together they return to the Maximals.

==Notes==
===Animation or technical errors===
* The fossil scanned by Silverbolt is clearly a bat, not a condor, and is a reuse of the CGI model of the fossil Nightscream found in "[[Survivor]]".

===Continuity errors===
* Also, seeing as how Silverbolt looks virtually ''nothing'' like his previous form, it seems somewhat odd that [[Rattrap]] would instantly recognise him without being introduced.
* Remember how in "[[Revelations Part III: Apocalypse]]", Optimus said that changing Rhinox against his will is no better than Megatron? Or in "[[Crossing the Rubicon]]", when he said much the same thing about Blackarachnia herself? Well, either Blackarachnia [[Fallout|''doesn't'' remember]] or it's okay when Jetstorm/Silverbolt has a [[To sell toys|new toy]] out. Then again, going behind everyone's back to do her own thing is possibly the only in-character action she made in the entire show.
* Previously it was a major plot point to maintain robot mode. Now Nightscream is able to maintain robot form while unconscious. Good focus kid.

===Trivia===
* Vehicons are a superstitious and cowardly lot.
* Regrettably, this episode has nothing to do with Green Lantern. Or Batman.
* This is one of only two episodes in the entire series to feature sunlight. Every other episode happens entirely at night. Wouldn't it be awesome if they did [[wikipedia:Ben_10:_Alien_Force|Ben 10]] that way?
*This is the last episode to show Jetstorm but Silverbolt would be called that name in the remaining episodes by Thrust
:''Nova Prime may be an [[Autobot]] in the [[IDW Publishing]] portion of the [[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]] [[continuity family]]. He is also known as '''Nemesis Prime'''.''

[[Image:Novaprime.jpg|right|300px|thumb|[[Furmanism|Ahead, hovering, like some vast, predatory bird...]]]]
'''Nova Prime''' was the predecessor to [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]]. An expansionist and a supremacist, Nova Prime believed that [[Transformers]] were the greatest among all life forms and that they should bring their glory to the myriad of lesser races throughout the universe.

After being sucked into the [[Dead Universe]], Nova was chosen to be the host for [[Darkness (G1)|the Darkness]], an otherworldly counterpart of the [[Matrix of Leadership]] which worked by transforming the inhabitants of the Dead Universe into [[Zombie|undead wielders of anti-life]]. Upon merging, Nova was reborn as the sinister and extremely powerful '''Nemesis Prime'''. He now sees it as his mission to fulfil the Darkness' imperative by expanding the Dead Universe's hold into the living realm.

Nemesis may seem to hold sway over both his troops and the Darkness, but nothing could be further from the truth. The powerful [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] sees the Darkness as his rightful inheritance. And then, there is the fear. The fear that the Darkness has more in common with the Matrix than Nemesis is comfortable with. He feels he has earned this power, and isn't willing to see it follow its natural path. It is for this reason he must eliminate Optimus Prime. And it is for this reason he fears to face his successor.
==Fiction==
===IDW comics continuity===
Long ago in [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron's]] past, before the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]], Nova Prime made efforts to evolve the Cybertronians in preparation for their "destiny". At his behest, [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]], his chief technical adviser, altered [[Pretender Monster|six Transformers]] to be able to [[Combiner|combine]] into a being of higher intellect and strength. However they were driven mad by the merging, and they devolved into [[Monstructor (G1)|a monster]]. After this, he ordered the construction of the first ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]''. Despite [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme's]] objections, Nova deceived the Cybertronian populace into believing that the ''Ark'' was intended for exploration, rather than its true mission of conquest. {{storylink|Spotlight: Optimus Prime}} Nova Prime disappeared along with the rest of the ''Ark''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s crew into an anomaly in the [[Benzuli Expanse]] and was presumed dead. {{storylink|Spotlight: Galvatron}} Despite his aggressive intentions, these never came to light, and the Transformers honored Nova Prime's memory with a statue. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 3|Megatron Origin #3}}

[[Image:Jhiaxusnemesisprimedevastation.jpg|left|180px|thumb|Not even a toy yet and he's already got a [[black repaint]].]]
However, countless years later, when [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] downloaded himself into [[infraspace]] to survive an attack from [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], he sensed the presence of Nova Prime... and was filled with an incredible sense of dread. {{storylink|Escalation issue 6|Escalation #6}} These feelings led Optimus Prime to seek information from Omega Supreme, and shared with him his belief that Nova might still be alive, and his feelings of dread. In turn, Omega told Optimus of Nova's story, and later learned of Monstructor. Optimus was left with the knowledge that the [[Prime (rank)|Prime]] lineage was corrupt, and it gave the Autobot leader something to ponder about. {{storylink|Spotlight: Optimus Prime}}

It was later learned that Optimus Prime's assessment was right: Nova Prime was still functioning, though in a strange half-dead state in the [[Dead Universe]], and was now the fearsome figure known as Nemesis Prime, powered by the almighty mind-altering anti-Matrix, the [[Darkness (G1)|Darkness]], which ruled the Dead Universe. His grand plan, the [[Expansion]], was intended to merge the Dead Universe with the real one, allowing him to both return home at long last ''and'' direct the merged universe into a new, more ''ordered'' era.

He already had an outpost and minions on [[Gorlam Prime]], ready to direct his coming Expansion. He'd had already had [[Nightbeat (G1)|Nightbeat]] captured by [[Sports Car Patrol|some of his minions]] and programmed {{storylink|Spotlight: Nightbeat}} to assassinate Optimus Prime at a set time, {{storylink|Spotlight: Hardhead}}, as he subconciously knew the Darkness would behave like the Matrix and jump from him to Optimus if given the chance. {{storylink|Spotlight: Sideswipe}}

With that secured, Nemesis Prime decided that the Expansion was ready to begin. He dispatched [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] in a mission to secure [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]], kill the Autobots guarding him, and bring the [[Pretender]] to the Dead Universe. Galvatron secured Thunderwing, but spared the Autobots, viewing it as a small rebellion against Nova. {{storylink|Spotlight: Galvatron}} After observing the [[Reaper|Reapers]] about to destroy [[Earth]], he ordered Galvatron there to stop them, since the Earth was part of their expansion plan. {{storylink|Devastation issue 3|Devastation #3}} Galvatron performed his task well, but Prime remarked to Jhiaxus that he was aware that Galvatron had his own agendas and secrets. {{storylink|Devastation issue 6|Devastation #6}}

After [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] secured the [[Nega-Core]] and activated its guardian, Nemesis Prime initiated the [[Expansion]] with the rest of the [[Dead Universe]] crew. {{storylink|Spotlight: Cyclonus}}

Nemesis Prime was found by Jhiaxus on the remains of the ''Ark'', thinking back on old times and planning for the future. Upon receiving the latest intelligence on both Cyclonus and Nightbeat, he dismissed the former and requested Jhiaxus take care of the Nightbeat situation personally. When Jhiaxus reported Nightbeat's death, Nemesis was unmoved, deciding he would take over Nightbeat's mission and deal with Optimus Prime himself. {{storylink|Spotlight: Hardhead}}

[[Image:DarknessNemesis.jpg|250px|thumb|He's an 8.5 on the Kirby Dot Scale!]]
Nemesis Prime attacked the prison facility on [[Garrus-9]] while Optimus Prime was inspecting it. The Autobot defense forces were helpless against him: Nemesis was immune to all their firepower and used his deadly decaying touch to instantly snuff out their lives. Seeing that conflict was futile, Optimus Prime ordered all the defenders to retreat, then faced Nemesis Prime directly. Nemesis gloated about the upcoming Expansion, then revealed to Optimus Prime the nature of the Darkness and channeled it as a weapon against Optimus Prime. {{storylink|Spotlight: Doubledealer}}

Unfortunately for Nemesis, the Darkness ''did'' want to leap to Optimus as he'd feared, and it would do so if he either used it or touched Optimus. Enraged, Nemesis backed off and resorted to firing a torrent of normal energy. Optimus was able to withstand the blast however, but their fight ended abruptly when Nemesis, distracted by the battle, was shot in the back and killed by Galvatron, as part of his plan to claim the Darkness for himself.

Though Optimus Prime soon destroyed the Darkness-infused Galvatron (or so he thought), Optimus remarked that he couldn't mourn his predecessor, noting that Nova Prime was long dead. {{storylink|Spotlight: Sideswipe}}
==Notes==
[[Image:NovaPrime variousmodes.jpg|right|250px|thumb|Nova Prime's smaller inner robot. Toy, Hasbro, please? Pretty please?]]
* Nova Prime was actually an Optimus Prime design that artist [[Don Figueroa]] had made for [[Hasbro]], but it was never made as a toy. In fact, part of the combined super robot mode concept art was first seen on the [[BotCon 2005]]-exclusive cover for [[Infiltration issue 0|''Infiltration'' issue 0]].

* It's unclear when the Autobots evolved as a faction in the IDW-verse. Clearly, by ''[[Megatron Origin]]'', they were a police force working for the [[Senate]]. However, it's not known for sure if they existed during Nova Prime's era; therefore, Nova may '''not''' be an Autobot.

* According to Nova Prime's design sketches by Don, seen in the back of ''[[Spotlight: Optimus Prime]]'', the form seen in the story is Nova Prime's winged cab/trailer super robot. He also has a smaller robot mode consisting of only the cab.

* Apparently, being an undead Prime means you have to reverse your colour scheme.
