He hates Autobot and Decepticon alike, hates his job, and hates that he works with the Decepticons because he was feeling ''really'' mad at the Autobots the day he signed up. What Crankcase does ''not'' realize is that the feeling is pretty well mutual among his own allies. He may have more enemies among the Decepticons than he ever will among the Autobots, as his attitude does not lend itself to making fast friends. Everyone Decepticon Crankcase has ever served has been perplexed with him being too busy complaining about his orders to effectively follow them. And that's assuming he even ''feels like'' following them. Many years in the past, Crankcase was a member of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]'s [[Defense Force]], under the command of Protector [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. After the discovery of a [[The Fallen|mysterious relic]] and an alien attack, {{Storylink|Defiance issue 1|Defiance #1}} Megatron changed significantly, altering the military's mission from one of protection of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to making war upon the hostile aliens and anybody who would stand in their way. Crankcase was present at Megatron's war rally in [[Trypticon (Movie)|Trypticon]], where the military leader demanded the control of all of Cybertron's forces in his vengeful attack on the aliens from the [[Eshems Nebula]]. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 2|Defiance #2}}

Crankcase was sent on a mission to capture science division leader (and thorn in Megatron's side) [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus]] and eliminate his fellow scientists and the unwitting security team sent to arrest him. He and [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]] observed [[Brawl (Movie)|Brawl]] nailing the "traitors" with an explosive round, and Crankcase was eager to get into the fight. He was ordered back by the glory-hound [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]], but Crankcase had the last laugh when the wily Optimus managed to bury the aerial forces under a mountain of rubble. After they were dug out, they all joined the rest of Megatron's new "Decepticon" faction. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 3|Defiance #3}}

Many years later, after Megatron had been killed on the distant world of [[Earth]] and the [[AllSpark]] destroyed, Crankcase helped deliver a massive generator to [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]]'s [[replica AllSpark]] at [[Simfur]] as part of [[Payload (Movie)|Payload]]'s work detail. As far as Crankcase was concerned, everything was pointless and stupid. Seeing no reason why anyone else should be enjoying things when he was so miserable, he grumpily ruined things for Autobots and Decepticons alike. When the [[Power Core Combination|Power Core Combiner]] process came along, it transformed Crankcase into a classic schoolyard bully. He used his newfound power to take his own misery out on anyone around him. Luckily for everyone (except Crankcase), the high was short-lived and the burst of happiness he would feel in using his new might against the helpless quickly faded. Taxisalad: Suggestion for trivia note

Is it worth mentioning in the trivia section that the alien mascot (featured in the main image of the article (and who's mention in the caption redirects to Thrust)) faintly resembles Ultraman?
Sure, the grey is just grey and doesn't really resemble silver, but the eyes and especially the way the mouth looks resembles him a tad bit.
It also wouldn't be too crazy considering this is an episode from Armada, and the combined form of Sideways' Minicon partners from the series, Mirror, already resemble Kamen Rider, another iconic tokusatsu property up there with Ultraman.

But when Unicron's physical form imploded at the end of [[Transformers: Energon (franchise)|the Powerlinx Battles]] and collapsed into a grand [[Unicron Singularity|Black Hole]], Ramjet was abandoned between dimensions, lost in the [[unspace|timeless non-space]] that glues the multiverse together.

He was not alone in this nether dimension. [[Elder God|Ancient evils]] which surpassed even Unicron's powers toyed with his [[spark]], destroying and recreating his existence for fun, until finally they got tired of him and returned him to the universe. Torn between being and nonbeing, Ramjet's body has become a form of highly unstable [[antimatter]] that violently reacts with the matter around him, leaving him constantly surrounded with a glowing corona of destruction. While Ramjet is powerful enough to create wormholes by collapsing the fabric of spacetime or channel his own physical form into destructive antimatter blasts, just holding himself together at all requires tremendous force of will. As a result, although Ramjet's powers are so great that his mere existence can corrupt the reality around him, mentally he's not quite all there.

Ramjet was cast adrift between dimensions when [[Unicron]]'s physical form was destroyed in [[Transformers: Energon (franchise)|the Powerlinx Battles]]. There, he was tortured for eternity by ancient evils of indescribable power until eventually they got bored and tossed him back into the Universe. {{storylink|Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club issue 5|Ramjet's profile in Club magazine #5}} After the Transformers had abandoned [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] in order to flee the [[Unicron Singularity]], Ramjet, his Mini-Con partners, and [[Nemesis Prime (Universe)|Nemesis Prime]] appeared through a portal and descended upon the planet, intent on its destruction. They first landed in [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]], near [[Maccadam's Old Oil House]], in search of potential pawns. Unfortunately, they only found [[Crush Groove]] and [[Jackhammer (Cybertron)|Jackhammer]]. The two were deemed useless and destroyed. Ramjet agreed with Nemesis Prime that the remaining Cybertronians were not likely to be of help, and so he suggested they pay a visit to [[Alpha Trion]] unaided.

Alpha Trion was found in his chamber (where he guarded [[Vector Sigma]]) beside [[Vector Prime]] and [[Sentinel Maximus]], two Transformers who had been sent through dimensions to aid Alpha Trion in this moment of crisis. While Nemesis dealt with Sentinel, Ramjet clashed swords with Vector Prime. As Ramjet fended off Vector Prime's blows with one arm, the other fired a beam of uncreation at Alpha Trion and Vector Sigma, leaving them in a state of severe disrepair. Having accomplished enough, Ramjet, Nemesis, and the Mini-Cons fled. {{storylink|Balancing Act}}

Ramjet and Nemesis recruited some [[Scrapmetal (race)|Scrapmetal]] to help locate [[Primus]]'s essence, as they had instinctual knowledge of Cybertron's structures. Regardless, Nemesis had questions. Why were they going through all this trouble if Unicron was already dead? Ramjet explained that so long as there is evil, Unicron still technically exists. Before, Unicron was only capable of destroying one universe at a time, since he was bound to a physical form, but ironically now that Unicron was dead due to the Unicron Singularity, the Chaos Bringer never had a better chance of true, all-encompassing victory. Since the Unicron Singularity was bleeding through to other dimensions, all Ramjet and Nemesis Prime had to do was use Nemesis Prime's [[Dead Matrix]] to kill Primus, and then feed Cybertron itself through the Singularity. This would destroy Primus in every universe, and the Unicron Singularity would replicate itself everywhere, swallowing all creation in the multiverse. As [[Scorponok (Energon)|Dark Scorponok]] ravaged the planet, Ramjet told the story of his cruel affliction to an enthralled audience of Scrapmetal. When he finished, Ramjet's Mini-Con [[Thunderclash (Armada)|Thunderclash]] arrived with a delivery: [[Skyfall (Cybertron)|Skyfall]]! {{storylink|Balancing Act, Part 3}} {{storylink|The Coming Storm: Part 1}} Though Skyfall was not [[Nexus Prime|exactly]] who Ramjet suspected he was, Ramjet nonetheless found him useful. Skyfall was desperate to learn more about his forgotten past, and Ramjet dangled the possibility of learning more about it before him. Skyfall agreed to help Ramjet achieve his objective, under the condition that Ramjet would then answer his questions. The location of Primus's essence had been revealed by the Scrapmetal's computer work, and so everyone departed.

Ramjet found [[Downshift (Energon)|Downshift]] guarding the [[Spark Core Access Tunnels]] deep below Iacon, and the small Autobot was easily dispatched. Nemesis Prime pinned him to the wall with one of his blades, where the two told him to await his uncreation. But Downshift was no longer Primus's only guardian; Vector Prime and Sentinel Maximus had become wise to their scheme and met the two in battle. {{storylink|Balancing Act, Part 4}} Ramjet told Nemesis to go on without him and use the Dead Matrix while he handled their opponents. Vector Prime sent Sentinel after Nemesis, as Ramjet was too horrible and dangerous a foe for him, and Vector Prime and Ramjet once again clashed swords.

Their one-on-one battle took itself out of Cybertron's chambers, through the surface of the planet, and up into orbit. Ramjet offered Vector Prime another option: it was within Vector Prime's power to restore Unicron from the Singularity, dooming this Cybertron but saving all others. Vector Prime refused, claiming that they could restore balance to the multiverse without saving Unicron. But, at that moment, Vector Prime's point was moot. Below, within Primus's Spark Chamber, Nemesis Prime had exposed Primus's essence to the Dead Matrix... {{storylink|Balancing Act, Pt 5}}

Still, Vector Prime would not be deterred. He called upon his [[Cyber Key|Cyber Key power]] and blasted Ramjet with Primus's power. Skyfall, however, who was watching from afar, feared for the life of Ramjet, who was the only key to his past. Skyfall stood between Ramjet and Vector Prime, begging for the life of the former. But it was too late. Though he should have wound up in the void between universes, Ramjet found himself in [[Of Masters and Mayhem|another universe]]. Awakening, partially fused in stone at an atomic scale, Ramjet found that he could not sense Unicron, finding that his master had never existed, and could never exist, in this universe. Pooling his energies, Ramjet shattered the rock and rebuilt himself into a new form. Sensing the presence of a great evil, Ramjet set out to ally with it and destroy his new universe as a means of leaving it. {{storylink|Assembly (OMAM)|Assembly}} He made his way to Earth, expressing his disgust for the human race as he approached one of their settlements. Filthy both physically and verbally, '''Dirt Boss''' intentionally skips maintenance checkups to keep his engine loud and misfiring, despite the risks this poses to him. Foul-mouthed and foul-smelling, he enjoys shocking and annoying those around him. Few can stand to be around him for any length of time; even his [[Race Mini-Con Team]] allies, who are likely the only ones who willingly spend ''any'' time with him at all, occasionally need to just get away.

And yet, Dirt Boss might actually be the ''smartest'' of the team, with extensive knowledge of high-level physics and entropy studies. Not that he ever really looks for a useful application for this information... But it certainly does give some insight into his attitude.

In the next battle, Megatron assembled both the [[Air Defense Mini-Con Team (Armada)|Air Defense Team]] and the Race Team into the two most powerful weapons in the universe. Armed with both the [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]] and the Skyboom Shield, he toyed with [[Optimus Prime (Armada)/Cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] until his overconfidence caused him to lose his grip on the Shield. Prime's Mini-Con partner [[Sparkplug (Armada)|Sparkplug]] then "locked on" to the Skyboom Shield and brought it under Prime's control, thwarting Megatron's killing strike with the Saber and balancing the powers between the two sides. {{storylink|Decisive Battle}}

Because the Skyboom Shield was in such demand by the Autobots to protect them from the Star Saber (and later the [[Requiem Blaster (Armada)|Requiem Blaster]]), Dirt Boss and the Race Team appeared quite infrequently as individuals. After [[Starscream (Armada)/Cartoon continuity|Starscream]] and [[Jetfire (Armada)|Jetfire]] rescued [[Firebot (Armada)|Firebot]] from [[Mars (planet)|Mars]], Dirt Boss was among the Mini-Cons who welcomed the new arrival to the Autobots. {{storylink|Mars (episode)|Mars}} Later, Dirt Boss and the Race Team went for a walk with the kids to catch some fresh air. Unfortunately, their little stroll happened just as [[Billy (Armada)|Billy]] and [[Fred (Armada)|Fred]] reported that [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] had met with Starscream. Squidhead had asked for the Skyboom Shield Mini-Cons as collateral for letting Starscream back into the Decepticons, so their sudden disappearance from the base didn't look too good for the former Decepticon. Worried that her charge was slow to understand Reverionist Teachings, she offered advice before going to her own duties. Later, she was cleaning the floors with her charge before Gauge tried to investigate Heretech's throne. Dragging her charge back to the main auditorium, when Gauge was unveiled as the Reversionists' herald, Accelerator was part of Gauge's escort only for her charge to reveal she'd regained her memories and broadcasted a message denouncing the Reversionists' extremist philosophy. In a rage, Heretech attacked Gauge but she managed to defeat him, exposing him as mortal as any other Cybertronian. When Sideways arrived on [[Earth]], Mirror was riding him wearing a disguise to make him look like a [[human]] clad in biker gear. When Sideways transformed, the rider retracted the disguise and split in half. His [[Rook (Armada)|top half]] became Sideways's head. His [[Crosswise (Armada)|bottom half]] vanished. {{storylink|Gale}} From then on, Mirror usually transformed from Sideways's head to ride him in motorcycle mode, though he once vanished from the scene to allow [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]] to ride Sideways in battle. Later, as Sideways was speaking privately with [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] without either Mini-Con head present, he spoke in two different voices, though it is unclear if one of the voices was Mirror's. When the last member of the [[Skyboom (Armada)|Skyboom Shield]] trio, [[Downshift (Armada)|Downshift]], became active on his own, Sideways and his rider were forced to give chase to the speedy little ‘bot. Though they were blown out of the race by [[Smokescreen (Armada)|Smokescreen]], the Decepticons did manage to snag the Mini-Con. {{storylink|Reinforcement}} When Megatron challenged to a decisive clash, Sideways worried that the Decepticons would end the Cybertronians' war prematurely while both the Skyboom Shield and the Star Saber were in his hands. Sideways and his rider rushed Red Alert in the middle of the battle in order to feign defeat, so that they could sneak away, and Sideways could sabotage his own team's victory. {{storylink|Decisive Battle}}

Sideways next planned to shake up the Decepticons' power structure. After planting the seeds of doubt on Megatron's competency within Demolishor's head, he and his rider sped off to allow them to take root on their own. They then came to Starscream to similarly goad him into challenging Megatron for leadership of the Decepticons. Shortly thereafter, Sideways tried to hack the Autobot base computer, only to encounter Rad, Alexis, and Carlos attempting to destroy the equipment to stop him. He transported them to a digital universe, where a digital manifestation of Sideways, complete with rider, greeted them. Sideways taunted the children by first telling them that the Autobots only ever humored them in letting them "help," and then by declaring that they would forever be trapped in cyber-space. Henceforth, Sideways settled with helping the other Decepticons on the battlefield in a more conventional manner, despite this only leading to more losses. When [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] joined Megatron's unit, Sideways showed concern over this new addition... and with good reason; Thrust was the first to notice Sideways and his rider sneak off to converse with his unseen master. {{storylink|Tactician}} But Sideways had yet to notice that Thrust suspected he was up to no good, and participated in another of the tactician's ambushes on the Autobots. On the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]], Sideways initiated a plan intended to turn the Decepticons against each other, then snuck off by himself into an underground cave. Mirror separated from his robot mode, and the two began to make a report to an unseen Unicron. They were interrupted, and Mirror quickly transformed back into Sideways's head. Sideways fled to the surface, where he was confronted by [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]]. They fought, but when Sideways started to lose, he turned into [[Trans-phase mode|a cloud of static]]. This angered [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], who proceeded to chop up the cloud of static with the [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]]. The cloud reformed itself into an image of Mirror's head, taunted Megatron, and floated up into the sky. {{storylink|Detection}}

*The cartoon version tends to present Mirror as a [[Triple Changer]] of sorts, transforming from the Crosswise head to the Mirror robot mode, and from there to the Rook head. In his first appearance only, he is seen separating to form Sideways's head—don't blink, you'll miss it!—but the extra Mini-Con that should have been left over is nowhere to be found. Neither Rook's nor Crosswise's individual robot mode is ever shown.
