The ghostly Starscream stalks Optimus Prime, culminating in a battle on the Moon.

Synopsis
Ironhide and Inferno watch as Kicker restlessly rides around Ocean City. He finally realizes that someone or something is coming. Starscream's voice wanders down corridors, searching for his victim, Optimus Prime. Ironhide and Kicker both suspect something, but find no one. Worried for Optimus's safety, they head for Headquarters Central Ops. Signal Flare and Skyblast also sense something, but dismiss it.

Aboard Unicron's head, Alpha Q speaks to his new creation, Starscream—a warrior without physical form, who cannot be harmed. They ran out of energon while re-creating him, leaving him incomplete. They send him to destroy Optimus Prime, who's hoarding all the energon.

Kicker senses Starscream and orders Ironhide to open fire, even though it seems like he's shooting at empty air. Starscream takes a shot at Optimus in the control center, misses, and retreats in the face of Ironhide's barrage of laser fire. The Autobots meet with Prime and voice their concerns, but Optimus Prime says he doesn't need a bodyguard. Kicker isn't happy about this.

Outside the city, Kicker and Ironhide receive orders from Hot Shot to secretly tail Optimus around the city. Prime's already aware of it, and orders Hot Shot to get back to work, over his protests. Optimus Prime remembers the mysterious entity that attacked him recently, and stops. He shouts a challenge to whoever it is that wants to take him on. Kicker, watching, senses the attacker and shouts a warning. Starscream attacks from the sky. The others arrive, only to find empty air. Prime leads his attacker away, intending to find out who it is.

The other Autobots are baffled by Prime's disappearance, when a space bridge appears above them. Optimus Prime drives into it, followed by Starscream. Though delayed by Starscream, Kicker, Jetfire and Ironhide follow, heading for Lunar City on the Moon.

The pair meet with Lunar City's crew, who haven't seen a trace of Prime. Jetfire finds out that Optimus Prime has turned off his communicator—he wants to deal with this alone.

A horde of Terrorcons approaches the Moon. Cyclonus wonders how the Autobots figured out Optimus is on the moon. Megatron orders him to find Optimus and "that mindless menace" before the Autobots do. Within Unicron's body, Scorponok gives Demolishor a hard time over his recent defection.

Hot Shot observes the incoming Terrorcons and requests energon stars from the Omnicons.

In an empty crater, Optimus Prime shouts another challenge at his invisible attacker, who responds dismissively. Hot Shot and Skyblast arrive to help out Prime. Prime manages to get a few hits in on Starscream, who tells him he's doing this to revive Unicron. Skyblast powers up the Autobots with energon stars and Energon Swords, which Kicker finds rather heavy compared to the Energon Saber.

Prime is rather irate at Starscream's plan to revive Unicron. Megatron finds Prime just as Starscream blasts him. As the invisible soldier drifts away, Megatron shouts angrily at him to identify himself. Kicker finds Prime down and inoperative, and completely freaks out. Skyblast revives him with a series of energon stars. Megatron breaks off pursuing Starscream and heads back to Prime's crater. Prime materializes "Hot Shot's blaster" and wonders why he's been granted it. The blaster holds Megatron off and sends him flying away.

Kicker is bummed about Lunar City getting trashed again, just as it was rebuilt. Optimus Prime tells him that lives are more important than cities, and to leave the worrying to him. Kicker says he'll always be there for backup.
"I get the impression that Megatron has doubts about your loyalty, Demolishor."<br>
"He ordered me to stand guard. And that's exactly what I'm doing, Scorponok."<br>
"Up until yesterday, you were standing guard for the Autobots. That in itself would cast doubt upon you."<br>
"Come on, you can't be serious!"<br>
"Relax, I was just having some fun with you. Now let's try to get along, Demolishor; that would be the mature thing to do."<br>

"What's this? Hot Shot's blaster — but why is he giving it to me?"
:—Optimus Prime is confused by the confusing confusion.

Notes
Lost in translation
* Upon hearing Starscream's disembodied voice, Ironhide wonders if Demolishor has returned, but the Energon dub warps it into him thinking that Demolishor is playing a joke on him (making it sound like he never left).
* The Decepticons arrive on the moon because Scorponok has told them that Optimus Prime is there, leading Cyclonus to wonder how he knows (the answer being that Alpha Q told Scorponok, since he knows that Starscream has lured him there). In Energon, however, the line is screwed up into him wondering how the Autobots have located the missing Optimus Prime, making it sound as if the Decepticons were responsible for his disappearance, and erasing the actual explanation for their presence. However, the dub does accurately preserve the scene in which Megatron blames Scorponok for his inability to find Optimus, which consequently makes no sense within the dubbed episode.
* A silly little error occurs when Prime launches his Prime Force drones by uttering the command "Super Mode!" In Super Link, he barked "Grand Force!" (the Japanese name for the drones), which the translators obviously mis-heard as "Grand Cross" (Prime's Japanese super-mode combination phrase), and so it got replaced with its normal English equivalent.

* The Energon version of this episode features some unfinished animation that was later completed for Super Link. Although it is mostly minor stuff (a different background layout here, a close-up not zooming in as far there, a missing laser blast or two, see screenshots), one brief segment is fully missing—when Kicker asks Ironhide for the Energon Saber, Ironhide simply tosses it to him without argument, and Kicker hops up on top of it. The complete absence of this bit of animation in Energon (replaced second-for-second with a still frame of Kicker and Ironhide looking at each other) results in some nonsense being inserted into the script which sees Ironhide pout about giving up the sword. This is made even more nonsensical by Kicker's exasperated cry of "Never mind, I'll make do with this one"... as he flies off on the Energon Saber. Gnnnnn.
* In one of the most notable instances of Energon just plain screwing something up in the most obvious way, Optimus Prime refers to the weapon which emerges from his chest as "Hot Shot's blaster," when Hot Shot has never been seen using such a weapon, and plays no hand in even giving it to Prime. In Super Link, this weapon is referred to as the "Matrix Blaster," and Prime refers to it as "a token from the previous commanders", a distinctly Mcguffiny explanation that makes only the most rudimentary level of sense. This is the only reference to the Matrix in either Super Link or Energon. The gun was, by the by, released as the Energon roleplay toy, "Optimus Prime Energon Blaster."

Pain count
* "Uh?": 15
* Stock footage: 2
* We need/they want energon: 2
* It's time to: 2
* We've gotta: 4
* Let's do it: 1

Animation and technical errors
* Starscream apparently bashes Jetfire away from the space bridge, but at no point are they shown in the same frame together — Starscream swings his arm at nothing, and a second later Jetfire bounces away from nothing.
* The animation of Ironhide and Jetfire's space bridge arrival on the moon is hilariously bad.
* When Optimus Prime deploys Copter Two in super mode, his normal mode's lower left arm assembly is missing.
* When we first see the Decepticons, they're flying directly above Tidal Wave (though it's not exactly clear from the animation that it's him.) A second later, the moon's surface is directly below Cyclonus instead.
* Megatron's final insult toward Starscream is a bit mis-timed, since he turns around and starts flying towards Prime before he's more than a word or two into the sentence.
* "Hot Shot's blaster" is not actually shown firing at Megatron; Megatron simply flies into a beam of red energy.

Continuity errors
* Why do Kicker and Ironhide have to "synchronize" their communicators?
* Demolishor is totally not voiced by Alvin Sanders in this episode.
* How does Prime's helicopter drone fly in the moon's vacuum?
* When Skyblast throws the sword he's holding to Kicker, Kicker struggles to hold it, despite being on the moon, where its weight should be less of an issue.
* When Kicker requests the Energon Saber, Ironhide says he "Just got it", despite the fact he is holding it in the everyone-stands-still-and-fires-blindly-at-Terrorcons scene just a bit before that.
* Optimus being the commander apparently doesn't oblige anyone to actually listen to him.

Trivia
*Starscream reacting in confusion to Alpha Q introducing himself is one of those times the dub just can't avoid what "Alpha Q" sounds like.
*This episode is a prime example of the general sloppiness that typifies the series. A lot of the dialog makes no sense at all, or doesn't correspond to the visuals. The scene editing jumps around rather randomly as well.
*Paramount's home video releases list the title as "StarScream, the Mysterious Mercenary"; note the parsing of the name and the added comma.
With the Autobots under pressure from constant attacks, things take a turn for the worse as Megatron returns from the dead.

Synopsis
As Inferno narrates, over the past several months, the Autobots under the command of Optimus Prime have been on edge due to the ceaseless attacks by the Terrorcons. As the enemy swoops down on Blizzard City, Inferno's command, he believed that this time the Autobots were ready for them, Blizzard City's defensive cannons blasting the Divebomb drones out of the sky. On the Moon, Jetfire leads Terrorcons over the remains of the Autobot base where cannons appear out of the ground, swiftly destroying the drones. At Canyon City, Ironhide uses a similar tactic to lure Battle Ravage drones into the firing line of artillery cannons embedded into canyon rock. Alpha Q expresses frustration at the new defenses on Earth preventing their quest to secure energon.

At Jungle City in the Amazon, as they watch Skyblast Omnicons install defense cannons into the city, Kicker congratulates Misha on coming up with the idea to use energon to power their weapons. She dejectedly responds that in truth, that idea was unintentional, as she was researching peaceful usages for energon. Kicker tries to cheer her up by explaining that their weapons are to defend themselves. As Misha mentions what a mentor Dr. Jones had been to her, Kicker senses an imminent attack on their location.

Outside, Optimus Prime defends Jungle City against the first wave of Terrorcons led by the treacherous Cyclonus. As the city explodes around them, the Omnicons are annoyed at interruptions to their important work. Misha orders the human crew to open their unfinished artillery bays and fire on the enemy. The Omnicons finally complete work, but the humans need to wait for their energon levels to rise.

Kicker lassos a Battle Ravage drone and allows it to lead him to Jungle City's energon mines and sniff out the energon, to the gratitude of the Omnicons. With their power at maximum, the defensive artillery sends Scorponok, Tidal Wave and the surviving Terrorcons packing. Inferno and Ironhide arrives via the space bridge soon after the enemy retreat, with the younger Autobot expressing disappointment at missing out on battle.

Inside Unicron, Alpha Q angrily berates Scorponok for their defeat, stating that they don't have enough energon to revive Megatron, and even more for Unicron. Inside the cavern with Megatron's corpse, Cyclonus and Tidal Wave apologize to their dead leader for not securing the energon needed to revive him. Cyclonus then told Tidal Wave that they will never revive Megatron, kicking his leader's corpse. Suddenly, Megatron's voice filled the cavern, telling his former minion to stop doing that. When Tidal Wave defends Megatron, Cyclonus reminded him how badly they were always treated and that he prefers Megatron to stay this way, kicking the corpse again. And again Megatron asks Cyclonus what he just said. Scorponok enters brandishing Megatron's Energon Sword, claiming that Megatron has been stealing their energon reserves and that the Terrorcon intends to rectify the problem, to the shock of Cyclonus and Tidal Wave. Megatron begins to drain energon from Unicron, prompting Scorponok to stab the spark sword into Megatron's chest, ceasing the energy flow. Suddenly, the energon drain violently restarts, and pulls the Energon Sword completely into Megatron's chest. As the other Transformers watch in awed shock, Megatron bursts out of his old body like an insect in a cocoon.

Megatron demands to know who had dared to use his power, and promises that the transgressor will pay for their disrespect. Quickly destroying Scorponok's summoned Divebomb drones, Megatron tears off the Terrorcon general's tail and proceeds to beat him into a mangled pulp. Megatron is about to deliver a killing blow when Scorponok says that his actions were at the bidding of Alpha Q. Megatron decides to spare Scorponok for now, but brands the Terrorcon with a Decepticon symbol and forces him to lead the Decepticons to Alpha Q. Alpha Q greets Megatron amicably, but soon realizes that Megatron has taken control of the Terrorcons. Alpha Q runs, with the Decepticons in pursuit, chasing him to what appears to be a dead end. As Megatron gloats, Alpha Q defiantly declares that while Megatron may have been stealing their energon, only Alpha Q had been carrying out Unicron's agenda. With that, the section Alpha Q had taken refuge in splits apart from the rest of Unicron's body, revealing itself to be the Chaos Bringer's head. Megatron can only watch as the head warps itself to destinations unknown, but quickly declares to his men that they should forget the treacherous alien and concentrate on attacking the Autobots and securing energon, despite Scorponok's advice of extreme caution.

At Ocean City, Kicker demands the space bridge be opened, for radar has picked up an attack on Plains City. Despite Ironhide's assurances that Hot Shot will be able to handle it, Kicker doubts that they can deal with the new threat. At the battle of Plains City, Megatron holds the battered Scorponok as his personal shield against the Autobot defense artillery before throwing the Terrorcon commander into the water below. On the ground, Hot Shot cannot believe his optics as Megatron flies into his line of fire.

It is the next morning as reinforcements arrive at the devastated Plains City, and are greeted by a victorious Megatron. Noting their obvious surprise, Megatron tosses Hot Shot's stasis locked body (minus an arm) at the Autobots' feet, to the shock of Ironhide.
Notes
Lost in translation
Nothing essential to the plot is lost in the dub, but quite a few changes don't make sense either within the episode or in the larger context of the series.

The issue of Megatron to Galvatron to Megatron is avoided in Super Link. Megatron remained Megatron throughout all of Micron Densetsu, unlike in Armada, where Megatron became Galvatron when he got his new paint-job. Megatron constantly renaming himself in the English version is typically seen as a measure to retain both the "Megatron" and "Galvatron" trademarks.

Random insertions
* Inferno's opening narration is a dub addition. Super Link features silence instead. Likewise for most of Jetfire's banter.
* Cyclonus's observation, "We're trapped!", is dub nonsense. In Super Link, he merely remarks on the barrier that protects Alpha Q.
* The dub adds some grunting from Hot Shot as Megatron tosses him around. Considering he's supposed to be unconscious, this doesn't make much sense. It is possible the grunting was added to assure the younger, more impressionable viewers that Hot Shot was still alive.

Random changes
* The dub has Kicker praising Misha for beating his dad to the punch, and Misha responding that she learned everything from him. The Super Link version of this conversation credits it as a joint venture.
* As they part before the battle, Misha says something that makes Kicker blush. In Super Link, she says that she'll work hard for love, and for Kicker. The dub diminishes this to a much more tame "you know how much I worry about you".
* Scorponok's dismissive "I didn't think you'd notice" is more of a surprised "you knew what was happening?" in Super Link.
* A Super Link bit with Megatron forcing Scorponok to address him with a -sama honorific is, naturally, changed for the dub.

Nonsense
* Prime's bizarre question of "I wonder why Kicker left me here alone to defend myself" is purely a dub insertion; Prime originally just comments that Kicker must have thought of something interesting.
* Super Link Alpha Q is certainly upset with Scorponok's failure, but as can be seen from the animation, he recognizes that their energon is being stolen by Megatron. The dub replaces this realization with Alpha Q telling Scorponok that he's expendable... a claim which runs strongly against what we see of Alpha Q's attitude about Scorponok in later episodes.
* In Super Link, as he sees Megatron's power, Alpha Q tells Scorponok that there's a change of plans. The dub changes this to Alpha Q somehow trying to speak directly to Megatron.
* In Super Link, as he prepares to flee, Alpha Q says that he's the only one who understands Unicron's structure, a preface to Alpha Q separating Unicron's head from his body. In place of this dialog, the dub continues its strange injection of Alpha Q somehow serving Unicron, by having Alpha Q claim defiantly that he is the only one who has carried out Unicron's will.
* Kicker implies that he knows about Megatron's revival before anyone on Earth ever sees him. ("Guess who just showed up!") In Super Link, he merely senses that something is wrong, and that there's someone new on the scene.

Pain count
* "Uh?": 13
* Stock footage: 1
* We need/they want energon: 5
* It's time to: 4
* We've gotta: 1
* Aw, come on: 2
* "Gimme a break": 2

Animation and technical errors
* When Ironhide rubs his nose, his forearm clips right through his chest.
* This is one of several early episodes where Misha is referred to as Mika ("MEEK-ah" in this episode, "MIKE-uh" in others.)
* When Optimus Prime appears at the beginning of this episode in vehicle mode, his front wheels are missing.
* Not really a glitch or mistake, but the animators cheated by having Optimus Prime's transformation into robot mode covered by an explosion.
* Prime's copter drone flies up to him without spinning its rotors.
* Kicker is very proud of himself for bringing a Terrorcon to "find the energon for us", but the energon that the Terrorcon "finds" is already exposed and visible.
* After Megatron picks Scorponok up by his head, as the camera pans down to reveal Megatron's fist hitting Scorponok's chest, Megatron's own chest is missing his Decepticon symbol.
* The speed of Alpha Q's running varies wildly.
* When Ironhide reacts to Kicker's panic of the attack on Plains City, his bicep clips through his forearm as he bends his right arm.
* The left arm Megatron uses to toss Hot Shot to the Autobots is disembodied and not connected to anything. It also immediately disappears after Hot Shot has left his hand.

Continuity errors
* After transforming, Optimus Prime turns to his trailer, which then tips over to launch his Prime Force drones. For some reason Optimus Prime's order for them to deploy is not dubbed in.
* When Optimus Prime combines with his drones into Super Mode, actor Garry Chalk does not have enough time to order Submarine Four to combine before the footage cuts to the next segment of the stock footage.
* It is not clear why Alpha Quintesson claims they were to resurrect Megatron, yet sent Scorponok to eliminate him. Then again, Alpha Quintesson is a few bots short of a Special Team.
* It is unclear why Optimus Prime's reinforcements took so long to reach Plains City.
* The various Skyblasts in this episode have different voices. Previously, they all had the same voice.
*At one point Cyclonus described Alpha-Q to Megatron, then in the next scene after Megatron bursts into Alpha-Q's chamber Cyclonus says "What is that thing!?"
* How do cannons on both sides of a canyon manage to avoid destroying each other?
* The gun turrets are normally shown as regularly spaced. When it's time for them to shoot at Tidal Wave and Scorponok, however, they're suddenly scattered randomly across the rock wall, coincidentally with gaps exactly the size of Scorponok and Tidal Wave in the battery.
* All the gun turrets in the episode are shown as having their front end facing in whatever direction they're expected to shoot...Except the battery which fires at Tidal Wave and Demolishor, which are for some reason turned 90 degrees so they have to aim their guns straight up just to fire into the canyon.

Transformers references
*When Alpha Quintesson escapes from Megatron, Unicron's head detaches from his body, a visual homage to the Unicron's destruction in the 1986 Transformers animated movie.

Real-world references
* Cyclonus reacts to Megatron's reactivation much like a B-movie mad scientist bringing a monster to life.

Trivia
*When Jungle City's defense cannons reveal themselves, Tidal Wave reacts with a comical anime giant sweatdrop, one of the few times the Unicron Trilogy series used traditional anime visual gags.
*This is one of the few times we see anything akin to the actual creation of Terrorcons, as they fly out of some glowy light nodes within Unicron to attack Megatron.

Pain count
* "Uh?": 15
* Stock footage: 2
* We need/they want energon: 2
* It's time to: 2
* We've gotta: 4
* Let's do it: 1

Revived, Megatron leads an assault on Ocean City, and Demolishor's loyalties are put to the test.

Synopsis
Inferno provides a recap of the recent disastrous events. The Autobots are shocked at Hot Shot's injuries, while Ironhide, seeing his worst nightmare, urges him to respond. Unfortunately, Optimus Prime is dealing with his worst nightmare a few feet away: Megatron is alive. Prime realizes that he's come for the energon to go after Unicron. Kicker and Ironhide want to kick some skidplate, but Optimus Prime calls for a retreat so Hot Shot can be treated. He warns Megatron that if he wants more energon, he'll have to go through Prime. Megatron is thoroughly unimpressed, saying that his sword gives him an incredible advantage. Megatron lets them go but demands that they surrender all their energon next time they meet.

Unicron is weakening, and so Alpha Q plans to steal back their energon via a new agent: the revived Starscream!

Hot Shot is lowered into an energon pool to heal his injuries. Signal Flare is nearly done duplicating Megatron's sword. Jetfire brings up the topic of Demolishor again, but Prime still takes no action. Demolishor is bored on guard duty.

Megatron has his Terrorcons release their energon onto Unicron. They give him an energon star power-up, and he sends them away for more. And once they've revived Unicron, Megatron will use him as a weapon of conquest.

Scorponok is being rather painfully repaired. Tidal Wave tells him he's lucky he got repaired at all, since he'd used the Decepticons. Scorponok wonders why Megatron didn't destroy Optimus Prime on Earth, and in a rare moment of deep thinking, Tidal Wave tells him to figure it out for himself. If he does, Tidal Wave might start to trust him. Scorponok mutters that Megatron was just afraid. Probably not what Tidal Wave was thinking.

Jetfire tells Kicker about the Omnicons' craft. Jetfire muses that they seem to know just where they belong.

A space bridge has materialized out over the ocean; Optimus Prime suspects a trap and sends Jetfire to investigate. Prime forbids Kicker to go with him, adding that Kicker is not going on missions anymore, fearing that Megatron will want him for his special abilities. Ironhide and Prime follow Jetfire.

Jetfire arrives at the space bridge to find empty air...then something materializes and knocks him away. Another space bridge opens up near Ocean City, and Starscream attacks Optimus Prime as hordes of Terrorcons pour out of the sky. Demolishor helps defend the city—until Megatron appears in their midst.

Starscream is handily defeating Prime with his teleportation ability. Megatron lands before Demolishor, who's suitably confused. Ironhide wants to attack Megatron in revenge, but Demolishor restrains Ironhide...then knocks him aside. Demolishor pledges himself to Megatron, who immediately demands a test of loyalty by having him open the city's gates.

With Kicker's help, Prime drives off Starscream. When Demolishor hesitates to open the gates, Megatron orders Demolishor to fire on him. Demolishor can't do it; instead he turns and blasts the city gates open, and the Terrorcons pour in. Prime arrives to battle Megatron.

Hot Shot revives in time to help Inferno drive off the Terrorcons in the city, while Kicker holds them off with a copy of Megatron's sword, which he then hands off to Prime, putting the foes on equal footing.

More Autobots arrive carrying copies of the sword, and the Decepticons are surrounded. Megatron uses specially treated energon to transport his troops away. Despite Ironhide's pleas, Demolishor goes with him, and Prime laments that they couldn't change his mind. Starscream briefly re-materializes and chuckles.
:—Optimus Prime reads his enemies like a book. A very short, simple book.

Ohh, they expect me to stare at the clouds all day. Is that what it means to be part of the Autobot team?
:—Demolishor

"Couldn't you be a little more gentle?"<br>
"You used us, Scorponok. You should be grateful that I chose to repair you at all."<br>
"But I helped revive Megatron!"<br>
"All you wanted was Megatron's power, but you were too weak."<br>
"Wait! I want to ask you something."<br>
"What is it?"<br>
"Megatron could have destroyed Optimus Prime. Why would he pass up a perfect chance like the one he had back on the planet?"<br>
"If you can figure that out, then maybe I will begin to trust you more."<br>
"Hnn. I think he was just afraid!"
:—Scorponok and Tidal Wave

"Uhhhh...moh—uhhhhh..."
:—Demolishor is speechless at Megatron's revival

"Don't do it! You're no match for him!"<br>
"Let go! Don't you understand I have to do this? That rat Megatron almost destroyed my friend Hot Shot!"<br>
"Sorry, I didn't even know that."<br>
[Ironhide breaks free of Demolishor's grip, so Demolishor grabs him and punches him in the stomach]<br>
"...Hey, why did you hit me?"<br>
[Ironhide collapses]<br>
"I'm tired of hiding who I am! Sorry, Ironhide!"
:—Demolishor and Ironhide conflict on more than one level

"Listen...closely. Turn and face me, Demolishor. Now. Raise your weapons and fire at me. ...DO IT! I'm your enemy now. Go ahead and fire on me!"
:—Megatron knows exactly how to push Demolishor's buttons

Notes
Lost in translation
This episode is rife with the American dub's penchant for inserting extra dialog. The Super Link version features terse dialog, fitting with the tense dynamics as Megatron returns and Demolishor faces a hard choice. Energon pads this out with lengthy rambling monologues. Examples include Inferno's opening monologue, Prime and Megatron's initial confrontation, and Prime's speech at the episode's end.

* Prime's order to distribute one Megatron Sword to each city is a bizarre mutation of his line in Super Link, where he orders Signal Flare to recall each of the cities' Skyblasts to help produce the swords.
* Demolishor's thoughts while on guard: dub addition.
* All of the Terrorcons' dialog: dub addition.
* Scorponok and Tidal Wave's conversation is translated almost precisely, apart from the final line: Scorponok doesn't think Megatron is afraid, but rather blames it on his "chivalry".
* A small bit of unfinished animation sees Starscream materializing against blue skies in one of two shots. In Super Link, the still-open warp gate is behind him in both shots.
* Galvatron's "if you want to live to see the future" rebuke to Demolishor is a dub addition; in Super Link he simply tells him "good job". (The dub in general frequently adds such threats and insults to Megatron's dialog, as if he wasn't nasty enough already.)
* In Super Link, some internal monologue by Kicker continues the episode's theme of searching for one's place (mentioned earlier as he observes the Omnicons.) It's absent in Energon, leaving this theme rather obscured.
* There is some minor variation in battle scene editing just before Jetfire and Ironhide powerlink. Neither version is particularly clear or preferable.
* The dub replaces some yammering from Prime about how "energon is for life" with some more mundane yammering about how, with the Megatron Sword, "our strength is about equal."

Pain count
* "Uh?": 17, not including Demolishor's very justified confusion upon seeing Megatron.
* Stock footage: 1
* We need/they want energon: 7
* Energon is great: 1
* We've gotta: 2

Super Link:

* I'm your opponent: 1, not including Megatron's very awesome "I am your enemy now" to Demolishor.

Animation and technical errors
* Inferno is shown saying "There's no way! Never!" in Ironhide's voice.
* The Divebomb that flies up to Megatron in deep space is animated against a blue sky with clouds.
* When Signal Flare is reporting progress on duplication of Megatron's sword to Optimus Prime, Signal Flare's face is entirely red.
* During Scorponok and Tidal Wave's chat, Scorponok's left eye is oddly visible through his visor.
* Moments after Optimus received an energon chip from Strongarm, the chip was gone.
* When Kicker runs into Ocean City's human control room, he says aloud "Hey, you guys, they're overrunning the city!" despite nobody else being in the room.
* Near the end of the episode, Kicker and the Omnicons arrive to back up Optimus Prime. However, none of the other Transformers are actually there as they approach.
* When Megatron activates his emergency space bridge, Kicker covers his face from the glare, but the animation suddenly cuts to him with his arms at his side again.
* The energy sphere from the space bridge extends over Ironhide/Jetfire, making it appear as though the Powerlinxed Autobot would be beamed out as well.
* Tidal Wave is supposed to be stupid, yet has the knowledge to repair Scorponok.
* Not strictly speaking an error per se, but rather a case of toy accuracy gone horribly wrong: Starscream's hands form closed fists, and in common with his toy, the design of his forearms make him unable to open them. This means he cannot take hold or let go of anything, and indeed we never actually see him picking up or dropping anything throughout the course of the series.

Continuity errors
* Why is Earth suddenly referred to as "the planet"?
* Considering the fact every Autobot and Omnicon in Ocean City was armed with a Megatron sword by the end of the episode, Optimus Prime was being rather stingy when he said they would deliver one sword to each city to help in their defence.
* Considering how easy it is to tell that Starscream is Starscream, Optimus not recognising him seems a little strange. Not even recognising him as a Transformer signficantly more so, since Optimus doesn't even know what "that thing" was.

Not-so-real-world references
* While the liquefied energon tank is similar to the CR Chambers and CR tanks from Beast Wars, in visual appearance, it owes more to the Bacta tanks seen in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Trivia
*The end battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron is quite well animated by the standards of Energon.
*Optimus Prime using his drill leg to kick at Starscream is pretty awesome.
*The scene where Optimus and Megatron clash swords (which eventually causes an explosion) was used in the intro sequence of Super Link.
*Starscream was killed near the end of Armada, after a long and conflicted history with the Decepticons, the Autobots, and the humans. Now he's back, his mind a blank slate. You might think this is leading up to something, but nope, his entire character arc consists of him briefly working for Alpha Q, then being tormented by Megatron, whom he then unquestioningly serves for the rest of the series.

Megatron: "It's good to be back. So good."<br>
Cyclonus: "Uh, Megatron sir? Don't you think the poor guy's suffered enough already?"<br>
Megatron: "Don't be silly! Why, I'm just getting started!"<br>
[Megatron steps down hard, breaking Scorponok's elbow and crushing it]
:—Megatron punishes Scorponok for his treachery.

"How am I supposed to believe, Cyclonus, after you had the nerve to kick me while I was down?"
:—Megatron, forgetting that he is the kinda guy to kick someone when they're down.

"Welcome to my team, Scorponok."
:—Megatron "drafts" Scorponok into the Decepticons.

"Time to test your loyalty, Scorponok: Be my shield!<br>
[Megatron holds Scorponok in front of him in flight, whereupon Scorponok is repeatedly blasted by Autobot defenses]<br>
"You pass! Now, out of my way!"<br>
[He drops Scorponok aaaalllll the way to the ground]
:—Megatron, clearly enjoying himself.

Pain count
* "Uh?": 13
* Stock footage: 1
* We need/they want energon: 5
* It's time to: 4
* We've gotta: 1
* Aw, come on: 2
* "Gimme a break": 2

The survivors on Mars are attacked again, but the Autobots must turn their attention elsewhere.

Synopsis
Alpha Q can feel the newly captured energon reviving the form of his master, Unicron. But it's not fast enough, due to the Autobots' interference. Alpha Q plots their destruction, by re-energizing the inert form of Megatron. This, of course, requires energon.

In a practice session, Jetfire and Ironhide aren't having much luck in Powerlinxing, as Ironhide can't seem to properly synchronize his breathing with Jetfire. Jetfire leaves in a huff, but Ironhide seems to have a revelation.

A comet-thing approaches Mars. At the battered Mars City base, a group of Transformers have found a new energon source, and radioed the Autobots for backup. They nervously await a response.

Dr. Jones radios the discovery to Prime and asks for backup. Prime wants to evacuate Mars City completely, because the mining operations can't happen there without the Omnicons. Ironhide jumps at the chance to go on the mission.

Two Transformers approach Mars City without identifying themselves. The Transformers there prepare to defend themselves. The Transformers turn out to be Transformers, including Tidal Wave, who presents himself as a friend... till he confirms that there is energon on the planet. Hordes of Terrorcons attack. Tidal Wave attacks and blasts into the mine. The Energon Saber Mini-Con team makes their escape from the mine, into a sky filled with Terrorcons.

The Autobots are about to deploy from Ocean City, but Prime suddenly hesitates to leave the city, anticipating an attack in their absence. He calls off the mission, to Ironhide and Kicker's frustration. Kicker waits for the attack to come; suddenly a space bridge opens, and a squad of Omnicons arrives, along with Cyclonus. Demolishor greets his old comrade. Cyclonus scuffles a bit with him, however, taunting him that he's forgotten how to fight, and telling him that "Scorponok's been reactivated" and will lead the Decepticons to new glory. The Energon Saber team arrives as well, reporting the situation on Mars.

The comet-ship-thing returns to Unicron, and Alpha Q delivers a reward to Scorponok: Megatron's mighty sword, the Star Saber, pulled from his very carcass.

Like the Energon Saber Mini-Con team, Ironhide and Kicker are restless, wanting to go help out on Mars. Meanwhile, a Terrorcon shows up at another Earth city, and the Transformers stationed there prepare for attack. Prime's team prepares to move out; Prime refuses to allow Demolishor and Cyclonus to tag along, but they head off on their own anyway.

Scorponok and Tidal Wave lead the Terrorcons against the city; Cyclonus and Demolishor arrive and find themselves facing off against their old comrade. Prime's team arrives. Prime sends Hot Shot to draw the Terrorcons away, and Ironhide to help out any civilians left in the city.

As Tidal Wave argues and fights with Cyclonus, Scorponok unleashes the sword's power. Ironhide and Kicker contemplate violating their orders; Kicker notes that he doesn't sense anyone in the city, meaning that everyone got out. Upon seeing the sword, Prime wonders if Megatron could still be alive, while Demolishor and Cyclonus have panic attacks on hearing that, and Tidal Wave declares that with energon, they can resurrect him. It's unproven, circumstantial, and something any reasonable mind can reject—which is probably why Cyclonus decides to switch sides, but Demolishor isn't so sure, and is left confused and hesitant.

The Energon Saber team combines and offers themselves to Kicker as a weapon/hoverboard. Ironhide manages to Powerlinx successfully with Jetfire; Kicker gives him the sword, and they manage to save Prime from Scorponok. Demolishor stares at the sword in further confusion. Prime and Ironhide double-team Scorponok, who retreats before they can do any damage. Scorponok leads his troops away, and Cyclonus follows.

Demolishor is left full of doubts. Prime thanks Ironhide for the save, and reassures him that despite the day's tragedies, he did well.
Quotes
"Look. The energon flows through him. Perhaps we can use him!"'
:—Alpha Q hasn't thought this whole reviving-Megatron thing through very well.

"Yes, Optimus. There is still some energon at Mars City. We thought that it had been completely decimated but a hidden reserve was discovered by a squadron of Mini-Cons. I was hoping you could send a support team there to investigate."<br>
"There are Mini-Cons at Mars City?"
:—Dr. Jones, who doesn't keep track of current events, and Optimus Prime, who can't keep track of his own troops.

"Mars City?! I'm in! I know I can teach those rookies a thing or two. You gotta let me lead the mission, sir!"
:—Ironhide is a victim of bad dubbing

"Huh? Where are those Autobots go."
:—Demolishor speak pretty one day.

"You chump! Scorponok wants you to believe Megatron is still alive to use you!"<br>
"But I have proof!"<br>
"Oh yeah? Well let's see it then!"<br>

Notes
Lost in translation
*Jetfire claims that Ironhide needs to "synchronize his breathing" in order for them to combine. Err, right. In the original version, he talked about feeling the pulse of his Spark of Combination.
*The dub presents the Autobots manning Mars City as Mini-Cons, when in actuality, they're Optimus Prime's own team of trainees, as seen in the first episode of the series. This is why Ironhide is so determined to accompany Prime's team to Mars (to save his old friends), and why Prime and he share an emotional moment at the end of the episode (because they fail to save them).
* In Super Link, when Cyclonus arrives, Demolishor tells him a rumor that Megatron has revived; Cyclonus is skeptical, and they both think Tidal Wave is an idiot for going along with it. In Energon, Cyclonus tells Demolishor a rumor that Scorponok has been revived, despite the fact that neither of them have ever met Scorponok before.
* In Super Link, the sword was made from Megatron and infused with his spark. Energon mangled this into the sword having belonged to Megatron.
*In one of the more famous Energon dub gaffes, Alpha Q claims that the Megatron Sword is the Star Saber, which makes absolutely no sense.
* Ironhide speculates that "there could still be Mini-Cons on Mars who need our help!" Well, yes, there's a whole city of them.
*When Ironhide and Jetfire finally Powerlinx together, they refer to it as Superlinking.
* The entire point of this episode, which is that the surviving Transformers on Mars are possibly getting wiped out, is pretty much glossed over. Can't have a bunch of guys getting killed in a kids' show!

Pain count
* "Uh?": 3
* Stock footage: 3
* We need/they want energon: 6
* We've gotta: 4
* Let's do it: 1

Animation and technical errors
* In the Energon version of this episode, when Scorponok destroys Optimus Prime's Prime Force drone units with a sweep of the Megatron Sword, instead of properly animated explosions, pulsating red circles appear. In addition, Optimus and Scorponok are simply hovering in mid-air, even though in the preceding and following shots Scorponok is standing on the ground and Optimus lying sprawled against a wall.
* When Jetfire and Ironhide go outside the base to help the Mini-cons, as they run, the background doesn't move.
* The animation of the ending battle sequence is amazingly unclear.

Continuity errors
*The fact that Mars City was previously a smoking bomb crater, with no detected life signs, is completely forgotten in this episode. Instead, Dr. Jones reports to Prime that an energon source has been discovered there, rather than the more crucial fact that there were survivors of the first attack.
* Why at this point would Demolishor know or care who Scorponok is?
* Skyboom is called "Sonar" by Optimus—perhaps not so surprising since Skyboom's toy is a retool of Sonar.
* Cyclonus was last seen guarding the moon base before it was attacked and destroyed in "Cybertron City". So... where's he been all this time?. And why were there Omnicons with him when he came back?
* All the characters recognise the sword as Megatron's, when he never used it before. This manages to make even less sense in the Japanese version, where the sword was explicitly created anew by Alpha Q.

Trivia
* More spiffy generics in this one, both in Mars City and in the unnamed Plains City. One of the Mars group is totally wearing a trash can lid on his head. With some slight modification, this same character model would later be recycled as Padlock.
At Desert City, the Autobots fend off the first Terrorcon attack against Earth.

Synopsis
Somewhere in space, a giant ship thing of some sort emerges from some kind of glowing spatial space thing. In space. Within, as Scorponok prepares to depart, Alpha Q gives him a "little gift": a holographic image showing a fried husk.

Tidal Wave wonders where he's being taken. Alpha Q tells him that they merely require his services... and he doesn't get a say in the matter.

On his Mars orbital station, Carlos searches video records for evidence of where Tidal Wave and Cyclonus went. Suddenly, he observes a comet-like object, which abruptly vanishes.

In Ocean City, Optimus Prime briefs his troops on the mining operations underway there and in Plains City and Desert City. He sends Hot Shot and Jetfire to defend the other two stations. Inferno passes along Carlos's comet sighting. Ironhide continues to grumble about his assignment, and Prime gives him a short dressing-down. Elsewhere, Meeka refuses to leave her city, to Kicker's frustration.

Aboard his comet-ship, Scorponok explains that they need Tidal Wave's help in reviving someone. Tidal Wave asks who, and Scorponok shows him the hologram—the corpse of Megatron. Scorponok explains to Tidal Wave that his superior needs his help to revive Megatron, via large quantities of energon. Tidal Wave is ready and willing.

Hot Shot arrives at Desert City, reassures Meeka, and briefs some generic troops on the Terrorcon threat. Jetfire does likewise at Plains City. An enemy force is detected just then; the Autobots wonder where they're headed, but Kicker is certain they're bound for Desert City. Optimus believes his intuition, and they prepare to move out. The Omnicons power them up and provide them with extra energon weapons.

Hot Shot's troops defend Desert City as Tidal Wave leads a fleet of Terrorcons. Hot Shot is miffed to see that their former ally is attacking. That anger turns to shock when he hears Tidal Wave say "must revive Megatron". Scorponok soon arrives as well. As Tidal Wave advances, the Autobots fall back to defend the mine entrance.

Meeka frets as the battle closes in on the research center. The Omnicons hurry as well, but decide not to abandon their posts. Gotta respect bots who will keep working in the face of certain death.

The Terrorcons break through, head into the mine, and begin munching away at all the tasty, yummy, energony goodness. Prime and company drive down out of the sky and head for the mine entrance. Tidal Wave attacks them, but Prime holds him off while the others head for the mine.

Prime demands an explanation from Tidal Wave, getting a "Must revive Megatron" in response. Scorponok introduces himself for no reason, then immediately orders Tidal Wave to destroy Prime. Kicker and Ironhide find Hot Shot. Informed that Meeka is still in the R&D center, Kicker heads that way with Ironhide following.

The Omnicons create a special energon star to revive Hot Shot. The group loads him up and heads out the back exit from the mines just ahead of the swarming Terrorcons, only to find themselves face-to-claw with the mighty Scorponok. Ironhide attempts to hold him off but is no match for the titan. The Omnicons give him the energon star meant for Hot Shot, but Scorponok leads the Terrorcons away before Ironhide can attack them. Tidal Wave tries to grab a raw energon star and gets a shock for his troubles.

Ironhide is awarded a Combination Spark for his bravery, making him a full-fledged member of Prime's team.

At Ocean City, Demolishor wonders if Tidal Wave is right—can Megatron be re-awakened?

Notes
Lost in translation
Amazingly, almost nothing:

* Jetfire mentions the enemy's penchant for rushing blindly toward energon, not mentioned in the dub but pretty clear from the animation.
* "Meeka" and her fellow scientist are worried about getting attacked because of the energon star the Omnicons are working to create, a point lost in the dub.
* At the end of the battle, Ironhide originally comments on Tidal Wave's intelligence, prompting Kicker to make a similar crack about Ironhide. This is why Ironhide is visibly frustrated at the end of the scene.

Pain count
* "Uh?": 7
* Stock footage: 3
* "It's time to:" 2
* Gimme a break: 1
* We're a team: 3

Animation and technical errors
* What is that chick's name? Mika? Meeka? Misha? Whatever.
* The Terrorcons' energon stars are animated differently in Super Link. In Energon, the entire Terrorcon glows purple as the star is generated; in Super Link, just the star itself lights up.
* After Skyblast gives Optimus an energon star, Optimus thanks Strongarm.
* When Ironhide runs toward the mine entrance, the background is animated so slowly it appears to be staying still. A more visible scroll was used in the Super Link version.
* When Tidal Wave is shocked by a raw energon star, the background shows a night sky. All other shots show early evening.
* Nobody can spell "Scorponok", apparently.
* The whereabouts of the missing "o" in "Scorpinok" (and the source of the "i") would eventually be revealed in "Improsoned Inferno".
* When the Omnicon pushes the ore cart, his feet don't touch the floor.

Continuity errors
* The disappearing comet is Scorponok and Alpha Q's ship, but its disappearing act is never explained.
* Apparently Ironhide suffers from the same selective blindness that Hot Shot did in the previous episode. When Ironhide's Energon Weapon vanishes, Kicker says he's out of Energon. Ironhide replies "You're right!" as he looks straight at the Energon Star which is still on his forearm.
* Kicker's shout of "we're surrounded!" doesn't really translate to the reality of "A single rather big thing is ahead and to our right."
* So, did Tidal Wave retreat, or what? He's last shown getting zapped by the energon star he attempts to grab.

Trivia
* The Street Action Mini-Cons make an appearance in their combined form as Perceptor, and Sureshock as Kicker's ATV, but they're never mentioned by name (besides Sureshock) or given anything to do beyond acting as Kicker's vehicle(s).
* There's a lot of sweet looking generic bots shown in Desert City and Plains City.
**Multiple generic Padlocks and "orange jet Autobots" are among Hot Shot's troops at Desert City.
* The identities of Skyblast and Strongarm are very confused after this episode. They're clearly shown in Ocean City, but identical 'bots with identical voices are also shown in Desert City at the same time. Apparently there's just a lot of the same dude running around.
* Seriously. The energon powerups are totally useless. Ironhide hits one Terrorcon with his energon weapon, and it promptly fades away.
* "Out of energon" doesn't have the same meaning in this series as any other.
* Nobody seems to give a crap about all the generics who get shot up in this episode, seemingly exploding and dying after a single hit. Only Hot Shot matters!

Pain count
* "Uh?": 7
* Stock footage: 3
* "It's time to:" 2
* Gimme a break: 1
* We're a team: 3

* Kicker's shout of "we're surrounded!" doesn't really translate the reality of "A single rather big thing is ahead and to our right."

Pain count
* "Uh?": 7
* Stock footage: 3
* "It's time to:" 2
* Gimme a break: 1
* We're a team: 3
