The history of Red Cross and Transformers
Back in the mid-80s and early-90s during the respective Generation 1 toylines' run in Japan and the West, the Ratchet, Minerva and Sireen toys all sported the "red cross on white backdrop" logo as stickers due to Hasbro and Takara not knowing that the logo was trademarked by the Red Cross organizations, and that it was being used incorrectly, since the symbol represents humanitarian organizations that normally don't operate regular urban ambulances. While it initially didn't cause any particular issues at the time, the Hasbro team at the time seemingly caught onto this fact at some point (presumably) part way through 1985, which led to the removal of the red cross stickers on later releases of Ratchet's toys, and also led to a revision of Ratchet's character models in season two of The Transformers cartoon where the logos were removed from his vehicle mode, and his robot mode shoulders. Despite this revision to Ratchet's models being made, Ratchet's brief appearance in The Transformers: The Movie still featured these logos, presumably due to the change being implemented in the cartoon while the film was already in production.

In 2002, the then-current Hasbro team working on Armada Red Alert wasn't aware of the trademark, and tampographed the logo onto the toy, while Dreamwave simultaneously also used the logo for G1 Ratchet's appearances in their Transformers: Generation 1 comics, leading to a legal battle between Hasbro and Red Cross. After this, the planned crosses for Armada Red Alert's Powerlinx repaint were dropped, and subsequent Dreamwave issues featuring Ratchet gave him various replacement logos, including a Pac-Man-ized version of the logo, a color-reversed version (which is the pattern of the Swiss flag), an uncolored version—and sometimes, no logo at all. Since then, all modern Transformers toys can no longer sport the logo, as it could be considered an abuse of the symbol's meaning, so now Hasbro typically uses "electrocardiogram" graphics as a substitute, which is usually also reflected in fiction.

Despite this, the occasional flub still manages to slip through, with one of the more notable cases being The Last Knight Hounds' robot mode helmet (right), which featured the logo in the film's early trailers. The final release of the film initially muted the colors of the logo, while home media releases of the film changed the red of the crosses into a bluish-purple color instead. Initial stock renders and images of Hound's toys also featured the logo, but these were dropped on the final toy as well.
Like most early G1 toys, he has little to no articulation in robot mode, with only his arms being able to move up and down a little. He does, however, have a swiveling turret and deployable front landing gear in his vehicle modes.

:All U.S. versions had the spring-loaded missile launchers severely weakened. The Japanese releases, however, kept the full-strength launching mechanisms. The tank turret on the original Blitzwing toy can be taken off, while later releases feature a turret that cannot be removed.

:Part of the third wave of 2012-2013 Generations Voyager Class toys, Thrilling 30 Blitzwing is a modern reinterpretation of his original toy, and transforms into two vaguely futuristic vehicles: a jet with an opening cockpit and back-mounted rocket boosters, as well as a tank with a rotating turret and a spring-loaded cannon that launches its missile when the barrel is compressed. The cannon can be swung out and deployed for use in jet mode. He comes with a blaster and a sword, both of which mount/are held by 5 mm post. He features 5 mm ports for his hands, shoulders/vehicle sides, cannon base, and wings, while both weapons have numerous additional posts and ports.

:In a nod to his Animated incarnation, he sports a face-swapping feature, allowing him to switch between a more traditional, visored face, a monocled face (inspired by the Animated character's 'Icy' persona), and a black jack-o'-lantern-like face (inspired by the Animated character's 'Random' persona). Unlike his inspiration however, the toy's faces spin vertically rather than horizontally.

:The toy is renowned for two significant design flaws. The first is that tabs meant to anchor the robot shoulders to the chest never solidly lock into place—they are simply too far apart. This makes his shoulder assemblies swing up and out of his chest when the shoulders are rotated up. Pressing the shoulder slots into the chest tabs sometimes works to counter this, but it depends on the tolerances of each individual figure. The problem can be completely eliminated with a little work:
:#For those not wishing to modify the toy itself, spacing material can be affixed to the back of the shoulder piece. This creates support in the back and allows the front tabs to remain in place.
:#Alternately, one can disassemble the figure and lightly sand the screw mounts and inside chest walls on the front half, bringing the back of the figure and the front closer together, and allowing the shoulder assemblies to lock in completely solid as originally intended. This has the potential risk of over-sanding, which prevents the legs from clipping securely to his chest for his vehicle modes.
:The second major flaw concerns the face-swapping feature; almost universally, this does not actually end up working because the rotating faces are rendered immobile by an excess of paint on the inside of the helmet, including the post the faces are mounted on. This can be fixed by dismantling the head, removing the faces, and trimming the excess paint in the helmet interior, or in some circumstances, by leaving the toy in a freezer until the inner-helmet paint becomes brittle enough to crack by exerting pressure on the faces, allowing the faces to move as designed. Unfortunately, the yellow paint is also prone to rubbing off when transformed due the rubber used to create the jet mode's nosecone.

:There are two variants of Blitzwing: The first version sports an all-silver Decepticon insignia on its chest and has the missile inserted into the turret inside the packaging, no extra space for the missile in the plastic tray behind the turret and no holes cut for tying down the missile, while a later running change changed the Decepticon insignia's color to purple, with a silver outline, and has the missile tied down in the plastic tray behind the turret. Oddly, the official Hasbro stock photo of the toy inside its packaging depicts the later version.

:The Japanese release sports a more metallic gold paint application as opposed to the lemon yellow gloss of his helmet, additional purple paint on his thighs and shoulders, dark metallic gray paint within his cockpit, and additional silver paint on his torso. The neck of the figure is now painted black rather than yellow to better blend in with the lower portion of his three faces. Some of the silver detailing on his torso was changed to gold. The figure also features a lighter, more metallic purple, lighter tan, and silver paint on all his gray plastic. The rubberized nose cone's colors are now more in sync with the entire body's purple. The scimitar weapon is molded in a solid purple plastic as opposed to the Hasbro version's "blade" being painted in a lighter hue to simulate an "energon" effect. The same design flaws that plagued the Hasbro release were also carried over in the Tomy version with the exception of the face switching gimmick issue.

:Blitzwing was retooled into Generations Doubledealer and Cloud Starscream, neither of which fixed the mold's shoulder problem. The design of the figure also inspired the look of Flywheels in the 2005 IDW continuity.
:Part of a Platinum Edition two-pack with Astrotrain released under the Generations line, this reissue of Blitzwing features an unprecedented light brown and red color scheme. The exact inspiration for this deco is unknown, with the currently prevalent theory being that it's supposedly an homage to the Duocon Flywheels's colors.

:This set was officially an Amazon exclusive in the United States and Canada. However, it was also stocked by US-based online retailers BigBadToyStore and TFSource, who supposedly obtained it as an import from Asia. It was available in several of Hasbro's Asian markets (namely Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan; it's currently unknown whether it was exclusive to any particular stores there or not). In the United Kingdom, it was available via A1Toys.

:This toy was repurposed as Fever Dream.
John Warden (Hasbro)

:Released as part of the fifth (and final) wave of Titans Return Voyager Class toys, Blitzwing is a redeco/retool of Megatron. He also comes with Hazard, a Titan Master who transforms into Blitzwing's head. Hasbro's stock photo (see right) has the figure transformed using Megatron's instructions, but a more animation-accurate depiction of the character can be achieved by simply rotating the tail wings forward, leaving the jet wings unfolded, and keeping the tank barrel attached to the turret. Like Megatron, Blitzwing is capable of transforming into his tank mode without removing his head, though this leaves it exposed completely on the vehicle's back.

:A recurring issue with many examples of the figure involves the figure's thighs being coated in so much paint that it affects the clearance and range of motion on the joints connected to them. This results in stiff thigh swivels and may sometimes prevent the shins from properly folding up and locking into the hips for either vehicle mode. The Blitzwing face on Hazard's back is also coated in heavy amounts of paint, causing the facial details to become nearly indiscernible. Additionally, the tabs that keep the arms in place in robot and tank mode and the panels in the legs in vehicle mode are both very prone to popping out. The stickers on the wings seem especially prone to peeling, sometimes doing so right out of the box.

:Interestingly, his instructions and stock photography depict an alternate transformation for the robot mode, leaving the jet mode tail fins less transformed in order to more closely match his animation model.
:Part of the second wave of Transformers: Legacy Leader Class toys, Blitzwing is a mostly cartoon-accurate version of the character. He transforms into either his fighter jet mode in 32 steps, or his tank mode (with visible plane cockpit to replicate the cartoon model) in 41 steps. His accessories include two of his traditional blasters, his signature sword (molded in soft plastic), all three of which can mount on his vehicle modes via various 5mm holes, and two very large Energon gauntlets with detachable hands. Said gauntlets can plug into his robot mode arms, plug into the back of the jet mode as comically long boosters, or reconfigure into missile racks for the tank mode's turret. All accessories can be stored on Blitzwing's back in robot mode, including the gauntlets which can be stored by leaving them plugged into the tank turret, by pointing the turret down instead of up.

Jumpstream is loyal to Pyra Magna to a fault, willing to sacrifice herself for her if need be. Pyra Magna knows Jumpstream can't be deterred, so she's decided she might as well train Jumpstream well enough that self-sacrifice won't ever be necessary. Thankfully, Jumpstream has the ability to teleport herself away from danger, but is that a power she'd use if Pyra Magna were in trouble?

Jumpstream can combine with her fellow Torchbearers to form Victorion.
IDW Generation 1 continuity
Before becoming a Torchbearer, Jumpstream was a civilian living in the desolate mining town of Parvus Oppidum. After her Conjunx Endura Dustup was attacked by a group of bandits after the town's meager energon supplies, Jumpstream convinced her partner to call the Torchbearers for assistance and greeted Torchbearer leader Praesidia Magna as she and her team landed. After showing them the town, Jumpstream introduced them to Dustup, trying to keep her wife from fangirling out to hard at finally getting to see the group up close. While Dustup left to show Torchbearer second-in-command Pyra the town's energon supply, the bandits suddenly returned. After her wife saved her from getting mauled by one of the bandits, Jumpstream joined in the fight and began attempting to rally the townspeople to stand their ground. However, after a large black hole opened up underneath the town, Jumpstream's priorities switched to helping get as many to safety as she could. Though the marauders and the black hole eventually disappeared, the town was completely destroyed. Helping the Torchbearers clear away the rubble and search for survivors, Jumpstream and Dustup both watched with interest as the Mistress of Flame helped Pyra to her feet as she regained consciousness.

When Pyra returned to Parvus Oppidum, Jumpstream thanked her for her team's help in reconstructing the town but the Torchbearer was more interested in talking to Dustup. Soon after this, Jumpstream and Dustup were both made members of the Torchbearers by the group's new leader Pyra Magna. Ghost Stories

Soon after Caminus entered the Council of Worlds, her team was sent to Cybertron to search for the remains of Crystal City.

Jumpstream and Dustup were really excited when Magna decided to investigate a nearby fight, and soon found themselves involved in a battle to save the Enigma of Combination. Said Enigma turned Jumpstream and her friends into a new combiner, Victorion, and after they uncombined, a startled Jumpstream learned something about Dustup that her friend didn't want getting out. An Uneventful Night

The Torchbearers opted to stay in the Rust Sea for a time, still learning to control their new powers. The inhabitants of the wasteland soon learned to avoid them. On one occasion, the team appeared to scare off a group of zombified Sweeps. The Transformers: Redemption

They remained in exile until Optimus Prime- seeking answers about what it truly meant to be a Prime, decided to visit the group. Conquerors Part 1: Aphelion Merging into Victorion, the Torchbearers tested Optimus's physical and spiritual resolve. Optimus's agnosticism about the Matrix of Leadership prompted Victorion to lay claim to the Matrix and vow to build Optimus into a worthy Prime. Conquerors Part 2: Lagrange

The Torchbearers travelled back to Iacon, where they combined and joined Starscream's forces in quelling a Decepticon riot at the space bridge. Conquerors Part 4: Perihelion After Optimus declared Earth a member of the Council of Worlds, the Torchbearers- still combined- took part in a skirmish against Galvatron's splinter force of Decepticons, but had to separate and fall back to the Skyroller after China deployed its anti-Transformer weaponry. All Hail Optimus Part 1: Once Upon a Time on Earth

As a show of good faith, the Autobots began patrolling impoverished and troubled regions around the world; Jumpstream and the other Torchbearers would defend a Middle Eastern girl's school from religious fanatics. The Torchbearers would later travel to the White House after Aileron went rogue, forming Victorion and extricating the Autobots from the White House lawn. All Hail Optimus Part 2: Edge of the Earth

The Torchbearers participated in Optimus and Soundwave's joint operation on the Nemesis. Galvatron managed to take them out of the fight by using his power over the Enigma of Combination to tear them apart, reducing Victorion to her components and knocking them out. All Hail Optimus Part 4: It's Beginning To And Back Again All Hail Optimus Part 5: As Above...So Below By the time that the Torchbearers had regained consciousness, the fight had already moved offworld. All Hail Optimus Part 6: No Fair Fights Pyra Magna led her team as they helped mop up the stragglers, White Light but were forced to combine again after the Earth Defense Command launched an attack on the exhausted Autobots. White Heat

Over the course of several months, the Autobots settled into their new role as global protectors, unaware that there were those humans who still saw them as unlawful alien invaders. Jumpstream and the other Torchbearers were deployed from Autobot City in Monument Valley to Oregon, where they defended Arcee and Jazz from an unprovoked G.I. Joe attack. As Victorion, they used her gravity powers to harmlessly take down human aircraft in the wake of Soundwave's EMP attack. Concorde Hymn Victorion maintained guard outside Autobot City as the situation intensified. The New Colossus Not long afterwards, the Dire Wraiths and M.A.S.K. besieged Autobot City for the deposits of Ore-13 beneath. As Victorion, the Torchbearers went up against Baron Karza, but when the Microspace tyrant released an army of Dire Wraiths from his innards, Victorion split into her components to better deal with the swarm. Valley Forge

When Karza had been thwarted, the Autobots and their allies returned to policing an increasingly volatile Earth. Tarantulas detects a new stasis pod and attempts to turn the protoform into a new Predacon.

Synopsis
As another stasis pod leaves orbit and completes planetfall, Tarantulas sends out a magnetic pulse that disrupts the sensors at both the Predacon and Maximal bases. The pulse ensures that Tarantulas will be the first to arrive at the pod's landing site, within Grid Halex, and that he will be able to manipulate the protoform inside. Blackarachnia discovers what Tarantulas is up to and insists on accompanying him to the pod's landing site.

Tigatron also sees the pod arriving, but is unable to contact the Maximal base so he sets out to intercept the pod on his own. He is intercepted by Waspinator, who delays Tigatron until Airazor arrives and saves him. Tigatron tells Airazor to go to the pod and that he will join her there.

Arriving at the pod, Tarantulas and Blackarachnia are too late to hand pick an arachnid form for the protoform; however, Tarantulas is able to do some reprogramming and turn the protoform into a Predacon. The new Predacon, Inferno, emerges from the pod only to attack the other two Predacons, then begins marching about the stasis pod. Tarantulas deduces that Inferno's beast mode is dominating his logic circuits and that he thinks he really is a fire ant protecting his colony, which his mind concludes is the stasis pod. Blackarachnia tries to fire on Inferno, but Tarantulas stops her, saying he wants no damage to the pod.

Airazor arrives on the scene only to be attacked and disabled by Inferno and Blackarachnia. While Blackarachnia uses this opportunity to make nice with Inferno and start to win him over, Tarantulas uses it to accomplish his real goal—stealing the stasis pod. This act enrages Inferno who sets out in pursuit of Tarantulas, with Blackarachnia not far behind. Tigatron arrives and tells Airazor to find Optimus while he pursues the Predacons.

Nearing his lab, Tarantulas is caught by Inferno who demands the return of the "colony". Tarantulas ensnares Inferno in a web and is preparing to finish him off when Scorponok arrives and informs Tarantulas that Megatron wants the pod. Before that can happen however, Tigatron arrives and destroys the pod. His victory quickly turns sour as he is attacked by both Tarantulas and Blackarachnia, who inflict heavy damage on him. Megatron arrives on the scene shortly, and even though both of the spiders flee, Tigatron is still in trouble. Inferno breaks free of Tarantulas's web, enraged at the destruction of the colony. Impressed with new guy's violent attitude, Megatron directs Inferno's fury on Tigatron. The ant is prepares to destroy the tiger, but Optimus Primal and Airazor arrive and blow Inferno into scrap.

Megatron gathers up the parts of Inferno and has him restored, while Optimus and Airazor take Tigatron back to the Maximal base for repairs. Back at his lab, however, Tarantulas is lamenting the loss of the pod, revealing to Blackarachnia his beliefs that the planet they're on is doomed. From this, the black widow correctly surmises that Tarantulas was going to convert the pod into an escape shuttle, but is unable to wrench any more information about his motives for doing so out of him.

Notes
*After Tigatron hits his head, there's a cartoony, tweeting-bird sound.

Animation and technical errors
*Inferno's beast form seems to be way too large for the stasis pod he crawls out of...
*Inferno's legs are also colored quite randomly. This means that when he first transforms to robot mode, his right leg suddenly goes from being dark red to a bright hue.
*When Blackarachnia hides behind a tree, her spider legs clip into its trunk.
*Then, as she transforms, Tarantuals' forearms are on backwards. And when he transforms, his robot mode legs miraculously disappear, only to flip down from his body and retract into it again.
*As Blackarachnia throws Tarantulas off herself, he briefly passes into her back.
*As Airazor struggles to get up, the fingers on her right hand twist outwards two times.
*When Tarantulas transforms after Inferno finds him, the markings on his spider abdomen change as it becomes his back.
*When Inferno breaks out of the web Tarantulas traps him in and fires his jets, his spinning abdomen is seen slashing through the back of his legs. (for a brief second anyway)

Continuity errors
*While other stasis pods are shown with hatch windows in outer space, Inferno's stasis pod does not have a window when viewed from the inside.
*Despite what the stasis pod says during Tarantulas's reprogramming of it, it had already started and finished scanning for DNA before the spiders even arrived.

Trivia
*While Megatron is complaining that repairing the computer is Tarantulas's job, you can see the words "eat me" on the screen in the Predacon variant of Cybertronix.
*This is the only episode of the series in which Scott McNeil voices just one character (specifically, Waspinator). The other fifty-one episodes saw him voicing two to four characters.
*It can be speculated that Inferno's faulty programming can be attributed to his pod already selecting his beast mode before Tarantulas began the reprogramming sequence. It is possible that without the Maximal or Predacon programming chips the pod began to program him with the basic instincts of an ant.
*Curiously, when Tigatron is injured near the end of the episode, his beast mode's face (which serves as his robot mode's chestplate) appears to be bleeding. Unless mech fluid happens to be red, this either this contradicts what Cheetor said to Tarantulas in an earlier episode when he said "I don't have real blood... only mech fluid.", or this lends credence to the theory that beast modes are wholly organic.
Dion is an earnest dock worker and best friend to Orion Pax. His has a simple life of manual labor, and he does not give a second thought to the stories that a war may be brewing around him. What does interest him are those new-fangled flying robots. Maybe someday he'll get to meet them...?

Nine million years ago, near the end of Cybertron's Golden Age, it was Dion's job to haul energy and supplies in and out of the dock in which he worked. There were murmurs of attacks from new, flying robots, but he didn't believe those rumours.

Dion was honored to meet the leader of these enigmatic warriors, Megatron, until Megatron revealed his plan to rob their dock of its energon stockpiles and ordered the Decepticons to attack. Witnessing Megatron strike down Orion and Ariel, another friend and Orion's girlfriend, Dion ran (seemingly straight towards the attacking Decepticon warriors for reasons unclear), but was quickly mowed down by a shot in his chest.

The time-traveling Aerialbots carried Orion Pax to Alpha Trion for repairs, and Dion's friend was rebuilt into Optimus Prime. Drones were sent back to retrieve Ariel, but Dion's fate is uncertain. War Dawn

In a similar but divergent timeline, Dion definitely survived Megatron's raid on storage yard 67, but just barely. Once reactivated and rebuilt top to bottom (with the help of Cop-Tur), he was approached by Sentinel Major and Magnum. Battle Lines, Part 1 Now fully knowledgeable of the extent of Megatron's evil, Dion signed away his life to the Elite Guard, believing he'd lost everything he'd known to war. Dion was assigned to Metalhawk's team, he and determined to fight Decepticons by any means necessary.

Dion's new twin flame launchers utilize a "Reverse-Higgs mechanism" to "decouple energy from matter", which makes things very destructible. Though rebuilt, he can still modify his arms to accommodate the need to carry heavy objects, a skill he possessed as a dock worker. Unfortunately, his new shoulders kind of lock up, which restricts his arms' movement. Wings of Honor

On Dion's first mission, he, his commander Metalhawk, and his teammates Over-Run and Ironfist allied with Thunder Clash's Elite Guard team to fight a plague of Virulent Clones. Getting covered with Insecticon goop was not exactly what Dion had in mind for his first foray into action, but nevertheless the clones were defeated.

They all relaxed for a bit, until a call from Magnum bleeped over Thunder Clash's comm, informing them that Metalhawk's squad had to ferry Thunder Clash's squad to Space Port Bravo straightaway. Dion and Kup helped load their gear onto the Hawk's Claw, then they disembarked.

Once at the spaceport, the two squads bid their goodbyes. Kup told Dion that he'd make sure to share any stories he came across with the "lad". When Dion reacted to the nickname by pointing out Kup wasn't that much older, Kup said it was just the first time he got to meet a younger Elite Guard member.

After Thunder Clash's squad left, Dion's squad speculated where they'd end up next. The others expressed a wish for something quiet, and Dion teased them that he actually looked forward to getting to beat up Decepticons. When Over-Run chastised Dion's eagerness by asking if the younger bot had ever seen a Decepticon up close, Dion stalked off angrily, much to Over-Run and Ironfist's confusion.

The squad eventually reboarded their ship and headed to Elite Guard HQ. There they were highly praised for their performance by Magnum, and assigned to a new mission—assisting a new special ops team in attacks against the various Decepticon leaders. The Coming Storm: Part 2

Dion was unimpressed with Sentinel Major's play-on-words: Combaticons "to Combat the Decepticons", but let the matter drop as the two units reported to Comm Officer Big Bang for their next mission. The two teams were being assigned to a civilian historical dig in Median to assist in demolition and excavation, as part of Magnum's ongoing efforts to curry favor with the civilian council (and keep them from interfering in more serious Guard business).

The diplomatic cakewalk soon turned out to be anything but. The historians expected to be under siege soon by a gang of Decepticon wannabes, who wanted the prize of their research: an urn containing the Heart of the Dragon. According to uncovered data, the Heart was apparently a spark of unprecedented innate power, able to reformat any normal Cybertronian form it resided in into a living engine of destruction. Dion and the Elite Guard had been requested in order to bolster the meager defensive fortifications that Security Chief Strika had assembled for the historians.

As they prepped the outer wall for attack, Dion engaged in a little star-gazing, dreamily recollecting stories of the Covenant he had heard as a protoform, like when Leonicus and Scorpius battled the dreaded ice demon. Dion drew a few funny looks from his comrades, though, when he started mumbling aloud about how cool Scorpius's fire-breath was. Once the Guard finished their preparations, they separated into two groups to settle in for the Decepticon attack. Dion was teamed with Metalhawk, Swindle, Blast Off, Over-Run, and the eager historian Lancer as the second front. After Onslaught's team wasted Roadgrabber, the Decepticons' advance striker, Dion's unit got the drop on Rage and the Stormtroopers who followed through after Roadgrabber. Rage surprised Metalhawk with his stasis chemical cannon, though, and the Stormtroopers swooped past Dion and the Guard once their leader was rendered inoperative.

The defense of Median turned into a fiasco after that, with casualties on both sides as the archaeometrist Glyph was killed by one of Rage's raiders, Aquablast, who was killed in turn by Lancer. Rage got away with the Heart, though, and the Elite Guard soon tracked him back to his mobile fortress, the Metrotitan. The Guard were assaulted by Rage's stable of Minotorons, cybernetic mechanimals of great size and poor disposition. Dion came up with the idea of using the Tressian Kajiga-whatsits Swindle have scavenged earlier to overwhelm Buffalo Dump and the bulls with amplified sound. His plan was successful and the Minotorons were sent retreating back to the Metrotitan.

Thinking quickly, Dion, Swindle and Blast-Off lept into the rear pails of the fleeing mechanimals, gaining quick and easy access inside the Metrotitan. Using his duro lifters and booster units, Dion broke out of the pens and helped his fellow Autobots make their way inside. By this point, however, Rage had already installed the Heart of the Dragon's laser-core in a new body, birthing the powerful (if micro-sized) Brimstone. The Elite Guard played cat-and-mouse with the dragon inside Metrotitan until a combination of Ironfist's explosives cache and the dragon's own atom-smashing flame breath destroyed Brimstone from the inside out. Flames of Yesterday

Dion's strike team continued to work with the Combaticons over the following weeks, and the two groups began to gel well together. After several successful missions, they separated after eliminating the Decepticon faction leader, Shadowcaster. The Coming Storm: Part 3 Immediately the Combaticons disappeared, and Dion's team was ordered to try to hunt them down wherever they may be. Their search took them into some very unglamorous places, which Dion felt was a waste of time. He complained to Metalhawk that their search in the wastelands was a waste of time, which his commander agreed with, but reminded him was nevertheless an order. It was then that the team was approached by a demented Empty which spoke cryptically of a "coming storm" where "rain will fall down" and the "thunder will deafen you" and where the "lightning will burn." After a bit of this, Dion's team grew weary of the Empty and left him.

But the Empty spoke true. Sentinel Major sent their team a distress call, as their Elite Guard headquarters was under attack. Metalhawk ordered his team back to base, where they met up with Ricochet on the outer skirts of the battle. He showed them a video feed of the battle's epicenter, where, bogglingly, the Combaticons had switched their allegiance to the Decepticons and had sieged the Elite Guard. Dion remarked that the group looked a little different than before, and, sure enough, the reason for this was revealed when the five Combaticons combined for the first time into the super robot Bruticus, crushing Sentinel Major to death in his mighty fist. The Coming Storm: Part 5

Metalhawk led Dion and the others deep into the battle to assist the dwindling members of the Elite Guard. Dodging the flung body of Crosscut, Dion finally made it to Bruticus, who was massacring his opponents. His teammates Over-Run and Ironfist met their end at his hands, which prompted Metalhawk to consider retreating and regrouping. Dion disagreed. He was a member of the Elite Guard! They fight and never retreat! He vaulted himself onto Bruticus in vehicle mode, transformed, and then repurposed the prophesy of the deranged Empty as he fired his arm-mounted weapons into the super robot's face: "While your boots may thunder, brute... I have the lightning!" Bruticus was blinded, forcing the combiner to separate, but not before he swatted Dion away, under a collapsing building. While the Combaticons retreated, Dion removed himself from the detritus, the lone survivor. The Coming Storm: Part 6

Following the massacre, Dion was repaired by Ratchet and Paradron Medic. (Dion was unaware that his personal story was being used elsewhere by an imposter to pick up chicks.) When Dion regained functionality, he regrouped with the few surviving members of the Elite Guard under Magnum, who planned to present them all to the Autobot High Council as living proof that the Elite Guard still had life in it. Unfortunately, as soon as they arrived in the Citadel, they were witness to the reins of the new Autobot military being given instead to the Council's pet hero, Optimus Prime. Battle Lines, Part 1

Magnum took his team looking for Deathsaurus's base, though Dion thought it felt like they were doing something illegal. They stopped off at the Elite Guard Auxiliary Weapons Locker for weapons and to pick up a few extra members. Battle Lines, Part 2 In short order, they found themselves under attack from Deathsaurus's troops, including the Combaticons. Thunder Clash told them to keep the Combaticons apart, something Dion thought was easier said than done. He was further perturbed when Swindle tried to sell him guns in mid-battle. As the Combaticons formed Bruticus, they were promptly blasted and Dion could only gape disbelievingly at Battle Lines, Part 3 Ironfist, Big Bang, Rumbler and Sprocket. To Dion's delight, they'd survived the massacre at Elite Guard HQ. Once they joined the fight, Dion attempted to attack Swindle, only to be hit from behind by another Decepticon. Battle Lines, Part 4

Back at base, he, Big Bang and Thunder Clash wondered why the Gyronian Sentry Team hadn't arrived with the Combaticons yet, only to discover that the Sentry Team had been AWOL for the last decacycle. A week later, he interrupted a conversation between Magnum and Optimus Prime to report that the Decepticons were massing at the edge of Iacon city. He and the two commanders watched in shock as Devastator broke through the city wall. Battle Lines, Part 5

Devastator advanced effortlessly through the Autobot Ranks. Dion was a quick thinker and suggested everyone aim at Devastator's knees. This separated the titan, and Magnum commended his excellent strategy, adding that some day Dion would be a "great Magnum." Even with Devastator down, the Autobots still had Megatron to deal with. With a blast of his fusion cannon, he destroyed Magnum and would have also destroyed Optimus Prime if Dion hadn't taken the shot for meant for him.

Though both Magnum and Dion fell, the Autobots were ultimately victorious. In the wake of their victory, Alpha Trion did what he could for Magnum and Dion, but he told Optimus Prime only one of them could survive their wounds. One died and the other was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus. Battle Lines, Part 6
Who is Dion?
Fan speculation
Orion Pax and Ariel were rebuilt into Optimus Prime and Elita One respectively, so for decades many fans speculated that Dion was also rebuilt into a familiar character. However, there are no hints within the episode itself, other than that Dion was Orion's best friend. Regardless, the fandom loves its patterns, and thus the most popular suggestions are Ironhide and Ultra Magnus.

Some think the debate is irrelevant, believing Dion most likely dead and inconsequential, and possibly a casualty that hit close to home in Optimus Prime's early years as Autobot leader. After all, no specific mention is made of him in the episode after he is shot, but Ariel is mentioned repeatedly.

The reason for this is that writer David Wise originally intended for both Ariel and Dion to die in order to add some weight to the episode. Upon reading the script for "War Dawn", colleagues of Wise made the connection between Ariel and Elita One (a character whom David Wise did not know of) as love interest of Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. This saved Ariel's life in the final product, as it was an obvious idea to have her rebuilt into a soldier alongside Orion. Any similar connection for Dion was never made, though the resulting conclusion on his fate in the episode gets into the realm of authorial intent.

Other continuities
In later years, many unrelated or tangentially related continuities would include nods and references to the fan theories about Dion's ultimate fate:

* In the Robots in Disguise episode "Ultra Magnus: Forced Fusion!", it's stated that Alpha Trion built both Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus, a likely nod to the Generation 1 cartoon.
* In the Dreamwave comic "New World Order", Ultra Magnus leads Security Team Dion, another nod.
* In the IDW comic Megatron Origin #3, a robot that is a hybrid of the "Orion Pax" and "Optronix" designs appears listening to Sentinel Prime's speech at the funeral of Bumper and Fastback. Standing with him are Elita One, Alpha Trion, and a white version of himself. This may be a reference to the proposed Orion-Ariel-Dion/Optimus-Elita-Magnus identifications.
* In the Dreamwave More than Meets the Eye reference books it is mentioned in Alpha Trion's profile that he shares a "special bond" with both Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime. This is possibly a hint that he rebuilt Ultra Magnus as well, given that his bond with Optimus began when he rebuilt him and as a result, Optimus looked up to him as a father figure.

However, because all of these easter eggs take place in different continuities from the Generation 1 cartoon series, they are not directly relevant.

Special mention should be made of the Timelines sub-franchise Wings Universe. As the franchise's storyline occurs in a continuity that is "VERY similar to the original G1 toon, though it is different enough to allow us some leeway in the overall story telling," it may have more relevance to the question of Dion's identity than other continuities. This story at first makes the wild assertion that Dion is... Dion. However, in "Battle Lines, Part 6", both Dion and another robot, Magnum, are killed, and the story leaves the question of which of the two would become Ultra Magnus ambiguous. As a result, the question of "Who is Dion?" becomes instead "Who is Ultra Magnus?" Well played, Fun Publications, well played.

The official word
In Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II, an "Ask Vector Prime" section dealt with the problem by ducking the question. When asked if Dion was rebuilt into anyone, the enigmatic cosmic entity replied "Which Dion? Celine Dion? I loved Titanic."
Twenty-five years after the episode aired, Hasbro weighed in on the question. When asked point-blank what Dion's fate was in an online Q&A session, their response included the following unequivocal statement: "Dion was never rebuilt into any other character."

Megatron returns and single-handedly decimates the Terrorcon forces worldwide.

Synopsis
In Toronto, Hot Shot stares dumbfounded as Megatron begins his rampage against the flock of Divebombs. Megatron says little, just screaming "Ten years!" over and over as he decimates the Terrorcon ranks. Hot Shot reports it to Jetfire who seems skeptical, but Hoist says that even if it is Megatron he's just the edge they need to win. Thrust attempts to rejoin Megatron's side, but Megatron just slips through another portal in silence. In Tokyo, Prowl witnesses Megatron's arrival and subsequent rampage amongst the Cruellock clones.

In Los Angeles, the Autobots are running out of energy in their fight against the Insecticon swarms. Meanwhile, Rad is flying over in the Energon Volant Accumulator, a jet designed to collect and store latent energon vapors.

On a sunny beach in Turkey, Kicker walks away from the smoking remains of Sharkticon, angry about being a target for every Terrorcon who wants to use him as some sort of energon battery. Slugslinger and Mirage are baffled as to how it happened, muttering that all they were told was to bring Kicker back alive, and now he's registering as an enormous energon blob on their sensors. Kicker recharges the fallen Omnicons, who immediately surround the pair and fire at them. Slugslinger and Mirage decide that the mission is a failure and take off, leaving Sharkticon to fend for himself.

In Tokyo, Megatron continues to obliterate the Cruellock clones, eventually pushing them to the point of retreat before he slips through another portal to Moscow to continue his assault, this time against the Battle Ravage packs. He continues to scream "Ten years!" and the Autobots are sending communications back and forth between the various cities reporting on Megatron's whereabouts and the subsequent retreat of all the Terrorcons.

The team in Los Angeles is suddenly assisted by the arrival of the Street Action Team and Rad in the EVA. He releases all of the energon vapors, recharging the Autobots and enabling them to fight back. But as Megatron teleports into the city, the last of the Terrorcons flee. Jetfire asks Megatron if he's done, and he says that it's a good start, but he's just warming up. He starts to leave again, but gives Jetfire one last message before he does: "Optimus Prime sends his regards... from the belly of the beast!"

In the Yukon, Ironhide and company have just received the first Base Unit for the shield tower when Scorponok ambushes them. He easily takes out the Autobots, but is interrupted by the arrival of Megatron!
* Despite the laws of physics, it appears to be night time in Tokyo, Moscow, Los Angeles, and Toronto at the same time.
* Dropshot is miscolored in a blue, purple, and green color scheme when Scorponok assaults the Autobot base in the Yukon. It is likely the colorist used G1 Micromaster Dropshot as reference here.
* When Tow-Line and Cliffjumper are kicking ass, both of the doors on Tow-Line's shoulders are drawn so that it looks like he has a spark crystal/energon star port on both. He really should only have one on his left door.
