After centuries of slumber, the Autobots and Decepticons awaken on a strange new world.

Synopsis
Spike Witwicky finds his father, Sparkplug, asleep in a bar. Spike asks his father how long he’s been there, to which Danny the bartender answers since noon. Sparkplug notices that Spike has his brother Jimmy's telescope with him. Spike tells him that he and Carly were planning to go up to Hanger's Rock to look at the full moon. He says it helps him remember Jimmy, to which Sparkplug grouses that it's better to just forget. Spike fires back at his father, telling him he won't end up like Jimmy. Meanwhile, another patron is drunkenly ranting about how he saw a giant boxy jet fly down from space. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Sparkplug's co-worker, Davey, here to pick him up for their shifts. Sparkplug tells Spike that he has to grow up eventually, to which Spike angrily asks if he means being like him. As the adults drive off, Carly arrives to pick Spike up in her van. Carly consoles a dejected Spike by suggesting they go "pretend they're on another planet."

At Hanger's Rock, the pair climb the mountain in search of a better view and discuss their future ambitions. Spike has recently been accepted to the University of California, Berkeley, where he wishes to follow in Jimmy's footsteps and become an astronaut, though he's reluctant to actually tell his father about it since Jimmy's death. Carly, meanwhile, has been looking at art schools, but she and her father are struggling to make it work financially. Carly takes Spike's hand in hers, telling him how sorry she is about what’s going on with his family. As the two teenagers lean in closer, an earthquake shakes the ground, causing the mountain to split open and sending the two plummeting into the depths below. Recovering, they find themselves inside a giant circular structure — the booster of a giant spacecraft. Spike ventures further inside the spacecraft and finds the main control room, littered with the mangled bodies of what appears to be some sort of giant robots.

Jetfire flies into the Ark and transforms, grateful to have found his fallen friends. He activates Teletraan One to repair and reconstruct his fellow Cybertronians, granting them new forms he found on Earth. The first to be reactivated is Starscream. Jetfire warmly greets his old friend, having not seen him in centuries. Starscream thanks Jetfire for waking him and says that he's glad he "picked the right side" before immediately turning to the nearby Bumblebee and blasting his head off. The stunned Jetfire, unaware that their people have been at war for the past hundred years, tries to stop him, but Starscream turns his weapons on his old friend for showing weakness. Starscream aims his weapon at Jazz next, but he is stopped by a reconstructed Optimus Prime!

As the Autobot leader and Decepticon warrior fight, Prime notices the humans and instinctively dives to protect them from Starscream’s fire. Starscream's attack is halted by the intervention of Ratchet, right as Teletraan One reconstructs Skywarp. Realizing the computer is reconstructing them randomly, Starscream tells Skywarp to bring their fellow Decepticons closer. Optimus realizes that the Decepticons will outnumber them and orders a retreat, telling Ratchet to load their fellow Autobots into his new form's trailer while he fends off their opponents. He reaches for his ion blaster but is intercepted by cannon fire from a revived Soundwave. As he recovers, he sees Bumblebee's remains, cradling him in despair before being beset by Starscream and Ravage. Seeing this, Spike and Carly run out and push Prime's blaster to him, allowing him to fight back.

Left with no choice, Optimus fires at Teletraan One, destroying the computer and preventing the remaining Decepticons from being reconstructed. As Teletraan explodes, Optimus grabs Carly and Spike. He and Ratchet transform and drive out of the Ark into the mountains below, Starscream and Skywarp in hot pursuit despite their low energon levels. Jetfire regains consciousness and follows after them, firing on Starscream much to his regret. Starscream volleys back, critically wounding Jetfire. Fortunately for the Autobots, Skywarp begins to run out of energy and the Seekers are forced to retreat.

Needing to recuperate, Spike leads the Autobots to an abandoned quarry. As he succumbs to his injuries, Jetfire apologizes to Optimus; so much has changed since he left Cybertron in hopes of saving it. Optimus tries to use the Matrix of Leadership to heal Jetfire, but Ratchet tells him that his injuries are too great. Optimus grips his old friend's hand as he passes, still lamenting his failure. Back in the Ark, Soundwave reports to Starscream that he is unable to fix Teletraan One, as they lack both the energon and the raw materials necessary. Until it is repaired, they are the only Decepticons left. Soundwave has already sent Laserbeak to scout for possible energon sources, but the job of harvesting it falls to Starscream since he has the most energon reserved. Begrudgingly, Starscream accepts. After all, he is leader of the Decepticons now.

As Davey and Sparkplug end their shift at the nearby power plant, Davey tries to talk to Sparkplug about his recent troubles, but they are interrupted by the arrival of Starscream, irritated he has to be the one doing all the work. The pair try to escape, but Starscream notices them. Sparkplug hides inside the plant, while Davey is snatched up by the giant alien. Starscream smiles to himself as he crushes Davey in his hand, amused at how fragile, squishy, and pathetic the humans are.
Quotes
"Where are you going? Isn't that... Jimmy's?"<br>
"Yeah. Carly and I were going to check out the full moon tonight, remember? On top of Hanger's Rock?"<br>
"Looking at stars again, huh?"<br>
"Doing this kind of thing... it reminds me of him."<br>
"Why would you want to remember? It's best to forget all that."<br>
"Is that how you're gonna live now? Just pretending he didn't exist?"<br>
:—Sparkplug and Spike touch on their trauma

"You must forgive me. I have been away for centuries. I did not know about the war. I did not know you were the new Prime..."<br>
"I remember the day you left our home to find a way to save it."<br>
"And you... were so young then."<br>
"Much has changed since you left our planet. All for the worse."<br>
:—Jetfire and Optimus Prime rekindle their friendship

"Why are you all looking at me?"<br>
"You have the most energon reserved. Thus the harvesting is up to you. It's what Meg---"<br>
"Do not say his name. I am the leader of the Decepticons now."
:—Starscream and Soundwave

Notes
Continuity notes
* Jetfire's arrival on Earth follows from his awakening in the first issue of Void Rivals. How long he was asleep exactly is a little unclear. In Void Rivals, he mentions being stranded for millions of years, but here he says he was away for merely centuries. Due to the syntax used, it could be that Jetfire was searching for centuries but asleep for millions of years.
* Cybertron's energon shortage was hinted at by Shockwave in Void Rivals #4.
* Soundwave and Starscream allude to the absence of the usual Decepticon leader, Megatron. Hmm... where could he be?

Transformers references
* Like with Void Rivals, this new series draws heavy influence from the Generation 1 cartoon:
** The character designs all pull directly from Generation 1.
** The Ark crashing into a mountain and the Autobots and Decepticons being repaired by Teletraan One is lifted from the premiere episode, "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1", right down to one of the Decepticons being reactivated first. The "error" of the Transformers having their Earth-inspired designs before they receive their Earth alternate modes is also carried over.
** Spike, Sparkplug, and Carly all originate from the Generation 1 cartoon, though they been heavily reimagined, especially Carly.
* Optimus Prime gains the upper hand over Starscream with a fist and a resounding "never", similar to The Transformers: The Movie.
* This isn't the first time a new Transformers series launched with Starscream in command in lieu of Megatron.

Real-world references
* Sparkplug's flashbacks on the first page of the issue features imagery of Sparkplug in the Vietnam War and the explosion of a space shuttle reminiscent of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster; based on the context, it seems likely that Jimmy was one of the victims in the latter. Whether these are meant to literally be those events (which would suggest the comic is actually supposed to be set in the 1980s) or merely stylistic renderings of purely fictional events remains to be seen.
* Carly's van art features several staples of van murals, such as a wizard inspired by Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, a barbarian resembling Conan the Barbarian, and a fantasy castle and dragon.
*Spike's outfit, with a red vest and blue jeans, seems to be pretty heavily based on Marty McFly's classic outifit from Back to the Future.

Errors
* Bumblebee's body is seen near Optimus Prime’s trailer, despite him being across the ship near Teletraan One when Starscream blew his head open.
* When Starscream is forced to break off his pursuit of the Autobots, his speech bubble is pointing to Skywarp.

Other trivia
* Prior to its official release, an ashcan copy of this issue was available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. The ashcan had certain pages taken out to prevent spoilers, as well as featuring concept art and designs for various characters.
* In early solicitations for this issue, the cover had an original logo with blue text broken over two lines; the final cover uses the standard modern logo, leaving some unsightly negative space above Prime's head.
* This issue sold out at the distributor level before it was even officially released, prompting Skybound to announce a second printing the day before it hit retailer shelves.

Two enemies from opposite sides of a galactic war find themselves stranded together on a desolate world and discover a shocking secret that changes everything they know.

Synopsis
The Agorrian Darak crash lands on a remote planetoid. Unconscious, his Handroid glove takes control of his body, dragging him to a nearby medpack and using a reviver to awaken him. When Darak asks where they are, the Handroid reports that, following the battle with a Zertonian ship that shot down his, each ship was caught in the gravitational pull of a comet and Darak was slingshotted into an uncharted region of space, far away from the Sacred Ring. Darak examines the wreckage, deeming it unlikely he'll be able to get it flying again, only to be attacked by the aforementioned Zertonian, Solila. The two enemy combatants fight, with Darak gaining the upper hand. He ultimately decides to spare her, reasoning that if the two work together, they can repair one of their ships and return to the Sacred Ring.

The pair begin to make repairs to Solila's cruiser, stripping the remains of Darak's for spare parts. Solila notes how little modification is needed for the parts to be integrated, something Darak attributes to Zertonian spies stealing Agorrian tech. However, during the process, Solila attaches the wrong cable to their energy source, causing the ship to explode. Darak saves her life, and she returns the favor by putting out the fire on his jacket. Believing their situation hopeless, Solila leaves, refusing to die with an Agorrian.

After several hours of sulking, Darak decides to once again try salvaging the Zertonian craft, only for Solila to return, having found what appears to be a crashed spaceship buried in a nearby valley. Handroid confirms that it is neither Agorrian nor Zertonian in origin, and Darak speculates it may have been buried for thousands of years. The two use their energy cores to try and activate the ship; as soon as they do, parts of the ship begin to move and shift. The two stare in awe as it converts before their eyes into a giant robot—the Cybertronian scientist Jetfire! Jetfire tells the two that he means them no harm, and inquires as to how long he's been offline, which neither of the soldiers can answer. Upon examining himself, Jetfire concludes that he must have been buried for millions of years and must return to Cybertron. He apologizes to the two as he transforms back to jet mode and flies into space, leaving them behind.

With their one hope of getting off the planet gone, Solila begins to sulk, but Jetfire's transformation has given Darak an idea: using components of each of their flight armors to convert the wreckage into a spacecraft. Solila refuses, as taking off their helmets violates each of their people's sacred decrees, but Darak counters that it's better than dying. The pair remove their helmets... revealing them to be of the same race.

Darak is stunned; this is just like his vision. A confused Solila asks what vision he's referring to.
Notes
Continuity notes
* Void Rivals gives us our first glimpse at the brand new Energon Universe from Skybound. However, much of the status quo of this new universe is left in the dark, so as to not give away the surprise.
* That said, one major clue can be gleaned: Jetfire appears to feature no insignia on his body, Autobot, Decepticon, or otherwise. This could mean he is unaffiliated with any faction by choice, but more likely it means he is unaware of any war on Cybertron, where he has been missing for millions of years.

Transformers references
* Hey kids, it's JETFIRE! The Cybertronian scientist makes a quick cameo in this issue as part of the surprise reveal of the Energon Universe. His being woken up after millions of years asleep and with no visible faction logo echoes the character's introduction in the Generation 1 cartoon episode, "Fire in the Sky". His design is also that of his Generation 1 cartoon counterpart.
* While it's never outright stated, the implication is that the fuel used for the Zertonian ship and to revive Jetfire is energon. However, it is notably colored yellow, as opposed to the more common pink or blue.

Other trivia
* Void Rivals status as the launch for the Energon Universe was kept secret for almost the entirety of the comic's promotion, with Skybound only revealing its existence to retailers just before the first issue's FOC date. It would ultimately be leaked by Bleeding Cool five days before this issue's publication.
*The legal indicia for the series reads "VOID RIVALS and all related characters are trademarks of Hasbro and are used with permission."
The Agorrian Darak made use of a handroid in his affairs. When he encountered the Zertonian Solila, the handroid repeatedly warned him of the sacred decrees he was breaking in the name of survival, including but not limited to not subduing her on sight and removing his flight armor in front of her. Void Rivals issue 1

With their one hope of getting off the planet gone, Solila begins to sulk, but Darak has an idea: using components of each of their flight armors to convert the wreckage into a spacecraft.

With their one hope of getting off the planet gone, Solila begins to sulk, but Darak has an idea: using components of each of their flight armors to convert the wreckage into a spacecraft. Solila refuses, as taking off their helmets violates each of their people's sacred decrees, but Darak counters that it's better than dying. The pair remove their helmets... revealing them to be of the same race.

Darak is stunned. This is just like his vision.
This could mean he is unaffiliated with any faction hy choice, but more likely it means he is unaware of any war on Cybertron, where he has been missing for millions of years.
Transformers references
* Hey kids, it's JETFIRE! The Cybertronian scientist makes a quick cameo in this issue as part of the surprise reveal of the Energon Universe. A magic spell leaves Grimlock stranded in a realm of swords, sandals, and sorcery—an untamed world where only the strongest can survive.

Synopsis
Brutal, bullheaded, and unpredictable, Grimlock and his Dinobots have never seen eye-to-eye with Optimus Prime's compassionate approach to warfare. As the two work together to defend the city of Harmonex from rogue Mecannibals, this divide is sharply illustrated by how they treat their defeated foes: while Prime intends to honor Cybertron's agreement with Master Mouth and ship the survivors back to Nebulon Station for punishment, Grimlock insists that they must make an example of their enemies and does so by cleaving the aliens in half with his sword. Prime reminds Grimlock that mercy is a strength all its own; before they continue this debate, however, the ground beneath their feet glows green with unusual energy. Although Prime thinks that it's an automated security field, the Dinobot leader senses something isn't right and shoves Prime to safety—moments before the light glows brighter, then engulfs Grimlock completely...

In an alien jungle, a cockatrice chases its prey through the undergrowth... until it's promptly crushed underneath Grimlock's huge metal fist as the Dinobot leader gets his bearings. Grimlock has no idea where he is or what's happened to him; as he tries and fails to raise Optimus on his communicator, he realizes that he might be lost, but he's not alone—without warning, a pack of huge, cat-like creatures charge toward him and nearly trample him underfoot! Grimlock fights back, but the monsters have weight and numbers on their side; although they quickly overwhelm Grimlock and drag him down, but they're only flesh and blood and can't pierce his metal hide. Thinking quickly, Grimlock counterattacks by transforming into dinosaur mode, swatting his attackers away with his tail, and unleashes a mighty gout of flame that reduces the creatures to cinders.

As Grimlock returns to robot mode, a voice compliments him on his victory over the leodon pack; Grimlock turns to see a group of unfamiliar humanoids, who hail him as the answer to their prayers! Their leader introduces himself as Arnak, elder of Valerift and the one responsible for summoning Grimlock to the land of Menonia. Many centuries ago, he explains, Cybertronians liberated Menonia with the help of the Golden One—but time moves differently in this realm and the Golden One's power corrupted the once-wise ruler into a cruel despot. The rebels who opposed him could not defeat him themselves; their only hope was to cast a spell to summon the Cybertronian leader who'd saved them once before—Optimus Prime. Grimlock bristles at that name: he is not the Autobot leader, and snarls that if they want Prime then they can keep looking for him. Although Arnak's daughter Arko hates the sight of her father begging Grimlock for assistance, Arnak has no other choice and takes a different tack: it took all of their remaining power to bring Grimlock to Menonia—the only way Grimlock gets home is if he helps them defeat the Golden One and use his magic to return to Cybertron.

Far away, in a towering citadel illuminated by the sun's rays, the Golden One himself uses his magically-enhanced senses to spy on Grimlock from the safety of his castle. The ruler of Menonia is intrigued that the rebels' plan has successfully worked, but can't hide his delight at the fact that they've summoned the wrong Cybertronian—as he explains to his servant Clatta, Optimus might have rallied the rebels, but Grimlock is a blustering fool whose arrogance will only further divide them.

Arko interrupts to snap that the Golden One could attack at any moment—if their "saviour" won't do his job, then they'll just have to save themselves. Arnak explains to the new arrival that the Golden One punishes all Menonians who worship the "anti-sun" by shapeshifting into a mighty dragon and terrorizing the countryside by burning everything in his path. Grimlock might be the only being in Menonia who can defeat the Golden One... but the Dinobot growls that while their enemy is strong, they are not. Fighting their battles for them won't make Arnak and his men strong—the only way they can learn true strength is if they save themselves. Arnak again tries to get Grimlock to see reason, by reminding him that there's only one way for him to return home, but Grimlock stubbornly stomps off into the woods. As one of Arnak's compatriots shouts that Optimus would never abandon them, Grimlock retorts that he's not Optimus and never will be; if the punishment for that is being stuck in Menonia alone for the rest of time, then so be it. Arko won't give up so easily, however: clearly, Grimlock has no patience for weakness and neither does she. As the Dinobot pushes his way through the jungle and stumbles on a pair of monstrous cyclopes, Arko follows his trail of desruction. If she can't persuade Grimlock to help, she vows, then she'll have to make him...
Notes
Continuity notes
* Like many of IDW's recent miniseries, King Grimlock appears to be set in its own little universe distinct from IDW's ongoing Transformers continuity. Most notably, the Grimlock (and presumably the other Dinobots) of this continuity does not actually seem to be an Autobot, though he wears their insignia; in his exchanges with Optimus and Arnak, Grimlock identifies himself as a Dinobot only.

Transformers references
* This miniseries wastes no time in setting itself up as a pulp-fantasy inspired riff on "Madman's Paradise", a memorably strange episode of the original Generation 1 cartoon which saw Grimlock and Daniel Witwicky travel to the other-dimensional realm of Menonia, a land of magic and sorcery ruled by Quintesson Mara-Al-Utha in the guise of "The Red Wizard". This comic seems to incorporate a version of this episode as having occurred in its distant past; Arko notes that Optimus once travelled here as a "liberator" and installed the Golden One on the throne, but differences large and small abound.
* While the cartoon version of the Golden One was a benevolent ruler whom Daniel and Grimlock helped return to the throne after deposing Mara-Al-Utha, this version is a more sinister figure: like the cartoon, he's a shapeshifter who can become a golden dragon, but unlike the cartoon he's a tyrannical ruler who uses that form to terrorize towns and villages who don't worship him. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that Arnak and his followers worship something called the "Anti-Sun"—given that the cartoon-universe Golden One derived his powers from solar radiation, he might have ulterior motives for going after followers of this deity.
* The Cybertronian city of Harmonex debuted in IDW's Monstrosity miniseries, which also gave it the nickname "The Singing City". Grimlock and the other Autobots are shown fighting Mecannibals, ravenous aliens who memorably guest-starred in issue #52, of Marvel's Transformers comic, and Prime namedrops their leader Master Mouth.
* Prime notes that the surviving Mecannibals will be deported to Nebulon Station for punishment, a location from the "Earthrise" season of the War for Cybertron cartoon. This might also be a double reference—their debut story in the Marvel comics had the Mecannibals hanging out on another space station.
* The D&D-esque character sheet in the backmatter uses the same stats as the original Grimlock toy's Tech Specs.
Real-life references
* "Grimlock strongest there is", boasts the Dinobot leader, copping one of the Hulk's many catchphrases.
Other trivia
* Backmatter for this plus-sized issue includes concept art of both Arko and Grimlock, plus a Grimlock profile written in the style of a Dungeons & Dragons character sheet—in RPG terms, our hero is a Chaotic Good barbarian with 1984 experience points.
