Romances
Should the romance section possibly be moved from here to its own article? It seems to be quite a bit large for a subsection of this one, and could reasonably be expanded upon. Some material from Reproduction might be relevant to such a new article as well. Khajidha 13:03, 26 December 2009 (EST)
:That might not be a bad idea... considering we have articles for stuff like relatives, reproduction, "sexuality" in the Humanization article, and robot/squishie romances, it seems like an odd omission to not really have a dedicated robot/robot romance article. Or rather, currently all of our robot/robot romance stuff is kind of scattered around in various places of said other articles. --Jeysie 14:47, 26 December 2009 (EST)

:Actually, I have been wanting to write a "Romance" (because "Sexuality" is only a bit less correct term) article for quite some time, merging this article's Romance section, Robot-Fleshling romance and a bit from the Humanization article's Sexuality section into one (and adding a much-needed list of those cases in which a Transformer's interest didn't go to something alive). However, thus far I have not found the time to get to it. Would greatly appreciate to see someone else make a start. Geewunling 14:48, 26 December 2009 (EST)
Organization
I've always thought that the Examples lists need some serious sorting; probably by Continuity, then alphabetically. The usage of storylinks seems kind of random too, in terms of whether they're used or not. --Jeysie 17:35, 27 December 2009 (EST)

:I agree the lists ain't pretty looking as is. Sorting them by continuity is a good idea, as is alphabetically. However, the Transformer/Transformer list can't be done alphabetically because of the involvement of two Transformers who both can influence the placement. I could arrange it real-life chronically, but that puts forth the question if for consistency I shouldn't all arrange them like that.

:The storylinks had me in doubt too. On one hand, they might be redundant because the information should be on the character pages linked to anyway. On the other, they are useful in that they help anyone searching for the source finding it. My policy to adding storylinks was if there were one or more continuitioes/continuity parts in which a specific relation happened, and if (arguably) more than one, not to add a storylink. I.E., Arcee's been involved with Hot Rod in about three continuities - no need to source that. On the other hand, Clipper was with Holi only in the Victory cartoon, so she gets a link (even despite her page showing she, in fact, only appeared in the Victory cartoon continuity). However, I am no expert on all parts of Transformers, and some therefore miss a link simply because I don't know what to source it with.

:Which also brings me to the point I wish to take a few relations off the list. I remember TFA OP/Ba was at first not on the list because their relation was not necessarily of romantic nature. I am not familiar with the Animated universe enough to judge, so I'd appreciate someone who is giving their opinion. Two other uncertain cases are Armada Starscream/Alexis and BW Tigatron/Snowstalker. Plus, I already removed First One/Cloudburst because the Transformer in there never felt anything for the organic, and I think the perspective of this article should be Transformer attitude towards relations. Geewunling 02:46, 28 December 2009 (EST)
::I'd say just pick the TF in each pairing whose name comes first alphabetically and go by that, except in cases like Arcee where the character has more than one significant other. I agree that continuity is likely the main useful sorting criterion, though.
::I'd agree on removing TFA OP/BA... they never seemed to have much of a relationship outside of BA kind of flirting with every mech who seemed the least bit interested. Or it could go under a heading of "One-sided attractions", which is where things like Cloudburst and the First One could go. (I'm not sure discounting the squishies entirely makes sense... the one-sided infatuations like Alexis and the First One are sometimes plot points, after all...) --Jeysie 03:03, 28 December 2009 (EST)

:::Not only cases like Arcee, but also one-sided cases can't always be done to alphabetical standards. Jackpot is the only counting component in his attempts to relations, so Airazor can't logically be made the first name.
:::Heh, I'm not overly sure about adding that kind of heading as well. Things are already looking pretty busy from my current (not yet saved) continutiy header additions. I'm not sure if it will be for the better to give specific attention to one-sided interest. But upon reevaluation, I think Cloudburst/First One should and can be mentioned in the yet-to-be-written Transformer/organic text.
:::So to be certain this is correct: There is no romantical note between TFA OP and Ba and Alexis had clear romantic feelings for Starscream rather than friendship?
:::And then I have two questions I need help/advice on. Firstly, from what I understand from SG Elita-One's page, she snuggles up to anyone with power. While I assume she and Rodimus go specific in Blitzwing Bop, c/should there be added a Thunderblast-ish note about power (perhaps linking to Optimus)? And secondly, I do feel there ought to be some mention about the straight-gay balance in TF, but I don't want it as aggressive as the Robot-Fleshling romance page currently has, yet more explained/prominent than the current Female Transformer page has. I don't know how to incorporate it. Thoughts? Geewunling 03:42, 28 December 2009 (EST)
::::You know, I honestly have no clue on Elita. On the one hand, her being a Thunderblast type certainly is a valid interpretation that would fit in with her personality and the Autobot culture.
::::On the other hand, there's really nothing to indicate that she ever liked Optimus, and if she's infatuated with Rodimus then of course she'd fawn over his leadership abilities. (Plus there's something appropriately lateral about Elita having been Roddy's girl instead of Optimus's.)
::::So... yeah. Dunno on that one. --Jeysie 16:27, 31 January 2010 (EST)
What about Tigatron and Snowstalker? Snowstalker is a "fleshling," I would say, but the text of the article explicitly targets humans. --ItsWalky 19:31, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
:Hrmm...well, the article actually only refers to 'sapient' creatures, which was done on purpose to include sapient non-human aliens like the First One of Femax and Alana, but Snowstalker isn't sapient...I could see her being, um, 'interested' in his tiger mode...but romance requires equal parts from both parties. ===Masterforce-esque Pretenders===
Hi.

One thing which seems to be missing from the article shown is the issue of what kind of changes the Pretender process as featured in Super-God Masterforce might have on the biomechs who undergo it - not least, when it comes to forming bonds with humans or other sentient organics.

If a biomech is reconstituted into an organic body - such as a human, in the case of Metalhawk and his Pretender team - would the issue not be somewhat different than if they solely remained as biomechs?

Indeed, in the first ep of Masterfore, one of the team (Lander) is in the middle of a date, when he gets a call from Metalhawk, then unceremoniously ditches his partner and rushes off to save the day.

Which would have been better had he not left her in a flash like an idiot, nor rushed into activating his Pretender armour while she could still see him!

Sigh.

But if the Pretender 'shell' in Super-God Masterforce is essentially a cybertronic life form disguised at a sub-atomic level within an organic human body, all of a sudden said life form would have to deal with all sorts of weird and unusual sensations, like having to eat, use a razor, brush one's teeth - or wonder why he suddenly finds one or more of the female (or male?) humans nearby somewhat more interesting than would have been the case prior to becoming a Pretender... --Nerroth 00:23, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Strika & Obsidian
There seems to be some vehemence about Strika's status (or not) as a female.

While I agree that there is no 'definitive' evidence that Strika is female, neither is there 'definitive' evidence that most TFs are male, yet we have no difficulty accepting that fact. To dismiss the (in my view) quite reasonable assumption that Strika is female as 'fan-conjecture' ignores a number of common-sense factors:

* The fact that in the cartoon she was voiced by female voice actor - there is no instance I can recall of a female TF character being voiced by a male actor or vice versa.

* That she is referred to as Obsidian's consort (rather than associate) is not insignificant. There is a nuance of meaning in the term that implies that they are not merely associates, but their relationship would be more similar to that of husband and wife, or domestic companions. The primary meaning of consort is the spouse of a monarch, which would sit well with Obsidian's perceived status.

On this basis, I think that it is reasonable to assert that Strika is intended to be a female character until there is conclusive evidence to the contrary. Perhaps she should be included in this listing, with a disclaimer about lack of formal evidence. To do otherwise would smack of legalistic hair-splitting.

:...I wasn't aware this was even in doubt. It'd require a fairly baroque misreading of Beast Machines to make Strika a dude. (BWR might change that.) -Derik 04:25, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
::::2. one ship accompanying another.
::::3. a. a group of instrumentalists and singers who perform music, esp. old music. b. a group of instruments of the same family, as viols, played in concert.
::::4. a companion, associate, or partner.
::::5. accord or agreement.
::::That leaves us #1 or #4... on reflection, the way Obsidian says it really does fit #4 better. *checks TF ultimate guide* Huh, there it calls her his cohort, which again seems to support Obsidian meant she was his partner, not sexytime toy.
:::::Er... perhaps there should be a Strika page? -Derik 07:10, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

::::::Ah, I think I follow something of the "WTF?" I have created - the conjecture is not about Strika's status as a female, but about the nature of the relationship with Obsidian implied from this. Apologies for this misreading.

::::::Having said this, some fundamental points remain - yes, there are 6 definitions of consort, but these are not equal or interchangeable - the most common or accepted usage of the term is almost always the one defined first.

::::::If the creators of Beast Machines had intended a more neutral relationship like associate, partner or companion, they could easily have used those words, and thus have prevented this current debate. However, the fact that they chose to use the word consort does make certain implications far more reasonable. There have been few (if any) female TFs introduced who did not have some manner of romantic or intimate entanglement. Since there is little doubt of Strika's gender, it is reasonable on this basis to assert that Obsidian and Strika were in an interdependent relationship similar to a marriage. Whether this included physical intimacy is neither here nor there, since many marriages can be founded on mutual attachment without intimacy. We can debate the nature of romance until the cows come home, though this wiki is probably not the best forum for this.

Can't answer that question quite as I don't watch TFA, but I've removed that pairing from the list some time ago when behind it came "but it's unclear if their relation is of a romantic level", or something like that. ::We're kind of going for romances that have actually been stated as such or at least strongly hinted at in the fiction. :::::Sorry to say this but I don't understand what you just said. I'm not sure anything was really hinted at between Snowstalker and Tigatron at least and still not all of them could be considered as official ones. ::::::Um. That is the matter at hand. We only include romances with strong in-fiction support/hints on both lists. Ratchet, for instance, doesn't show any potentially romantic feelings towards Arcee other than caring about and being protective of her, and by that criterion you have even more evidence for him and Omega Supreme than you do he and her. --Jeysie 18:19, 25 November 2009 (EST)
:::::::Didn't I just say I didn't want to argue about it anymore? Just leave it! Some will vehemently refuse to admit it exists. Others really don't care about the brand beyond it. Regardless of opinions, Transformers engaging in or pursuing interaction of a romantic nature is a well-established element in pretty much every continuity. For the most part, Transformers are observed searching for romantic partners amongst their own kind, but attraction to organic lifeforms and even non-living objects has been documented as well.

Some wonder why a species that likely does not reproduce sexually would participate in behavior that in other creatures exists as a means to promote sex and thereby new life. While a definitive answer to this has yet to be given, the question as to why Transformers become romantically involved with one another can be approached from a different angle. Transformers are a highly social species. This is shown through their very human-like society, interpersonal interactions, familial relationships, and even the fairly common practice of merging bodies and minds. If these are not frowned upon, then why should social connections of the romantic kind be regarded much differently, if at all? Perhaps there is no reason for them to engage in romance, but then there is equally no reason for them not to.

Though rather obscure, there is even an official term for two Transformers in a relationship: "sparkmates". Existing as a fan term mostly, it has been used in two official sources, the end-of-game bio for Airazor, in reference to her and Tigatron, in the Nintendo 64 version of the "Beast Wars Transmetals" video game and again in Venus. In addition, Downshift's Cyber Key Code info appears to refer to Transformer marriage in stating that he and his partner "joined together under the Covenant of Primus".

Orientation
The most common observation of Cybertronian romance is between a male and a female Transformer. Considering the general scarcity of female Transformers, and perhaps the absence of sexual reproduction, this is a rather interesting if odd situation. Second to that are the number of noted relations between a Transformer and an organic, equally so almost solely between a (nominally) male and female. These become more frequent as the gender balance becomes less even, even if that is a direct result of Transformers allegedly being genderless. Third in line come "couples" that consist of a Transformer fawning over a not-living object, often regarding it as of the opposite gender.

Though not unheard of, same gender interests are extremely rare. The Japanese version of Beast Wars had Airazor as a male, making his relation with Tigatron the only known instance of a homosexual Transformer couple. At a distance follow Energon Mirage, who had the (unrequited) hots for Galvatron, Dick Gautier's joking "confirmation" at 2002, that Rodimus Prime is gay which is most likely impossible due to his examples of heterosexual romantic encounters listed below and Generation 1 Sunstreaker, who may have been gay in the Dreamwave continuity. Transformer/organic relations are not any richer in this regard. Paddles had a clear fondness of the humans Randall and Ed, and Magnificus and Ga'mede might have something going between them, but that's about it. A note could be made on the fair chance that Tigatron's beast mode represents a female tiger and was scanned from his partner Snowstalker, yet that is speculation at best.

The real world-explanation for the overall lack of anything specific between two of the same gender is that Transformers above all exists to sell toys to children and so has to play in on the wishes and expectations of the general audience. Even if attitude is improving, heterosexuality is still the default assumption and favoured option. A few same gender-relations may have appeared in fiction over time, at least the most prominent one by accident, but for the moment, writers still prefer to haul up Arcee or insert a new female (Transformer) to fill the romance niche than play up that sort of interaction in same gender context.

Sex
[[Image:KP001.jpg|right|300px|thumb|"Oh, Convoy! Your shift lever is dirty," Marissa exclaims. "It must be from when I spilled soft serve ice cream on you before.
The hints are few and far between, but Transformers is not devoid of the possibility Transformers might engage in sexual activities (for recreational purposes). Kissing is a regularly observed sign of affection and in The Headmasters episode "Return of the Immortal Emperor", Chromedome was rather thrilled he got to see Arcee transform. Nevertheless, Beast Wars was the first to pick up the subject in a more direct manner: in the episode "The Agenda (Part 1)", Rattrap offers to take Silverbolt to what sounds like a Cybertronian version of a strip club, and later slyly makes a double entendre regarding Silverbolt's suspected kinky activities with Blackarachnia. Meanwhile, the Japanese dub has Rattrap, thinking himself about to be stabbed by Dinobot, ask his attacker to "be gentle, because I've heard the first time can hurt."

References and innuendoes have sporadically been appearing since. Beast Wars Neo featured the character Archadis, who makes a sport out of coming up with double entendres. Scarlett and Bumblebee had a suggestive conversation about "riding" him in "Wolves", and in "The Art of War issue 3", Arcee promised Bumblebee to "rotate his tires" if he could beat her, to which he responded with a most enthusiastic "Wooo-Hooo!". In the Dreamwave issue "Infestation", one remark from Sunstreaker might suggest the existence of Transformer S.T.D.'s. In the ever-questionable Kiss Players double-entendres ran rife, with one of the most disturbing involving Optimus Prime deriving pleasure from Marissa Faireborn polishing his stick shift and rubbing the rim of his gas tank, which are pretty clear metaphors for... well... y'know.

And that's about it as far as canon is concerned. If you wish to know any more on the matter of Transformer sex, go ask a random fangirl. Chances are well she has written or read a good number of fan stories exploring the subject. Take note doing so will be at your own risk.

Most commonly, Transformers stick to their own kind when becoming romantically entangled. This is to be expected, as those of their own kind share the cultural and bio-technological mindset that makes their personalities more likely to be compatible. Despite the low number of female Transformers, most relations seen thus far are between a female and a male. What this means for Transformer culture - Are relations something rare? Is there programming or something that only connects a male to a female and vice versa? And if so, why does it exist? - goes unexplained.

Perhaps because reproduction does not seem to be a motivation for them to become romantically involved or perhaps because finding a proper partner among their own kind is not always an easy task, more than one Transformer at one point in their life made nice with an organic lifeform. However, virtually nothing is known about how the long-term cases worked out, what with physical differences such as size, lifespan and aging, and cultural differences - up front the constant influence of the war.

As to why organic lifeforms sometimes get head-over-heels for beings that can't fulfill the very reason they seek out partners, is another matter. In the case of humans, several authoritative works have been written on relevant aspects of their biology. Readers are advised to seek them out for further reference.
{{bigquote|And when we get back home, I want Bumblebee to meet my brother's convertible.
While the ability to at least exchange thoughts can explain the interest some Transformers have for beings not belonging to their own kind, that pretty much doesn't go for the interest some of them have for non-living objects. Unless the fact they often treat them as if alive has something to do with it. This is possibly not as odd as it seems: Transformers are, after all, part object themselves, some even having been upgraded from a mere piece of machinery. In that sense, it is perhaps harder to understand why it doesn't happen more often. Fancy that sleek piece of car? Oh, so it's one of those not talking back?

Sex

Bumblebee discovers that MECH and Starscream are responsible for his troubles; Ratchet confronts demons from his Cybertronian past.

Synopsis
With Bumblebee on a medical bed, Ratchet tells Bulkhead off for taking the scout into battle. When Bumblebee comes around, he faces Ratchet's ire as well, and Optimus Prime grounds Bumblebee until his T-cog can be recovered. Ratchet has another idea though—he offers to donate his own T-cog in a transplant. Though Optimus is uncertain, Ratchet convinces him.

Megatron is pleased with the new device Knock Out has secured—a force field generator—although Megatron's demonstration leaves him startled.

Elsewhere, Starscream and Silas find an energon deposit, though Silas would appreciate it if Starscream didn't talk so much.

Ratchet selects Arcee to do the operation, though she's less than enthusiastic. She starts by putting Ratchet in induced stasis, but before she can do the same for Bumblebee, an alarm signals the appearance of another relic from the Vaults of Iacon. Optimus calls a halt to the operation so he, Arcee and Bulkhead can investigate. No sooner have they left than Agent Fowler contacts the base. He's disappointed only Bumblebee's there to take his call, but passes on the news that he's got the possible coordinates of a MECH base. Unable to understand Bumblebee, he searches for someone who speaks English, but Ratchet is barely coherent, still recovering from stasis. Jack volunteers to pass the message on.

Optimus and his team reach the top of a mountain to find Knock Out and Breakdown uncovering the Forge of Solus Prime. With it, the Autobots could conceivably create a new T-cog for Bumblebee.

MECH infuses the newly-found energon into their creation, but as it begins to stir, Bumblebee bursts through the door. Though unarmed, Bumblebee throws an industrial-sized barrel at Starscream, knocking him flat, and proceeds to shrug off the weapons fire from the MECH goons.

As Knock Out and Breakdown free the forge, the Autobots charge them. While Bulkhead tackles Breakdown, Optimus and Arcee find they have a bit of a problem getting past Knock Out's shield generator, and he pushes them back towards the edge of the cliff.

Bumblebee knocks a bunch of MECH troopers flat, jumps on their robot and tears his T-cog from its innards. No sooner is this done than he's hit by a blast from Starscream. As MECH withdraw, Starscream grabs the T-cog and threatens to destroy it.

Ratchet recovers, only to find Fowler shouting at him about MECH coordinates, and the kids reveal Bumblebee has gone to deal with it.

Meanwhile, Bumblebee has had enough of Starscream's gloating and belts the ex-Decepticon, knocking him flat. As the T-cog flies up into the air, Bumblebee jumps for it, but a quick blast by Starscream spells the end of that attempt. While Starscream leaves, Bumblebee is left with his shattered T-cog. Starscream meets up with MECH outside the compound, but Silas is less than impressed with him for losing the T-cog, and Starscream is soon surrounded by MECH troops.

Optimus and Arcee are forced back to the cliff edge. While Breakdown is distracted by their predicament, Bulkhead takes the opportunity to grab the Forge of Solus Prime and smack the Decepticon with it. Breakdown lands on Knock Out and for a few moments Bulkhead stands triumphant, at least until Megatron steps out of the GroundBridge and blasts him. Collecting the Forge, the Decepticons leave. Ratchet reports the situation with MECH to Optimus.

Starscream comes around to find MECH gone. When he sees Optimus's team arrive at the MECH base, he tries to transform, only to find his T-cog had been taken, and runs off panicking into the woods. Meanwhile, Bumblebee walks out to join his comrades, sadly holding his own damaged T-cog. Optimus radios Ratchet to prepare for surgery.

On the Nemesis, Megatron attempts to use the Forge, only to discover that it requires the power of a Prime to work.

Ratchet finishes operating, restoring Bumblebee's old cog. Though Bumblebee's first few attempts to transform fail, he eventually manages it, and takes Raf for a drive. Ratchet, for his part, seems happy that it worked.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
*Once again, Starscream's eyes are completely red for the first half of the episode. It's only after Bumblebee hits him with a barrel that they are only red circles. Maybe hitting him with a heavy object is the key to making them normal.
*After the Autobots pass through the GroundBridge to MECH's headquarters in search of Bumblebee, Optimus had his battle mask drawn. When the camera pans to show Starscream behind them, his mask retracts silently, and almost invisibly.

Continuity errors
*In the previous episode, the MECH Surgeon is shown to be able to lift (and run with) Bumblebee's T-cog without much difficulty. Silas tells Starscream to bring it with him, instead of just picking it up and taking it himself; he's even standing right in front of it. Then again, Silas could just be exerting dominance onto Starscream, metaphorically flexing his "I'm the leader" muscles. Or on the other hand the MECH Surgeon could have already left the place and Starscream carrying it might been quicker.

Continuity notes
*Once more, Starscream mentions being the one to "offline" Cliffjumper.

Transformers references
* While delirious, Ratchet refers to Fuzors, and even names Bantor, a reference to Beast Wars Bantor.
* Optimus mentions Solus Prime, one of the Thirteen.
* Knock Out unfavorably compares the results of Megatron's failed forging experiment to a "Fortress-Maximus Grade Nucleon Shock Cannon".
* Megatron once again calls Optimus by his pre-Prime name "Orion Pax" from the previous episodes during his gloating.

Real-world references
*Knock Out broadly references award shows such as the Oscars and Emmys.
*"Put a tiger in your tank" was a slogan of Exxon.

Trivia
* When Agent Fowler relays the information on MECH's whereabouts to Bumblebee, he says it really slowly and condescendingly, as if he believes Bumblebee has trouble understanding English, rather than just being mute. Fowler's kind of a jerk.
* During the fight in the hangar, Bumblebee punches several MECH soldiers, sending them flying through the air. Silas survived this, so it stands to reason everyone else did, too. Cartoons, everybody! (A soldier didn't crack the prototype's lens; that was his rifle.)
* This episode confirms that (at least the current cast of) Cybertronians are incapable of self-propelled flight outside of a flight-capable alternate mode. This is in stark contrast to previous continuities. Especially ones in which even Cybertronians who didn't have flight-capable vehicle modes were capable of self-propelled flight through air and the vacuum of space.
* Solus Prime is the fourth member of the Original Thirteen to actually be named on television (the others were Alpha Trion, Vector Prime, and The Fallen, respectively).
