:First Aid is an Autobot Protectobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.

First Aid is one of the most empathic and compassionate beings you'll ever meet. He cares deeply about all living things. Heck, he even cares deeply about the "pain" of inanimate objects. A broken or malfunctioning can-opener will earn just as much sympathy and attention as a fellow Autobot. Otherwise, First Aid is a soft-spoken and sometimes overly cautious sort (especially when it comes to the well-being of a fellow Autobot). Still, all the Autobots know he will work long and hard to do his best for them and that their well-being matters to him more than anything, and those are quite comforting thoughts.

First Aid is a member of the subgroup Protectobots and forms the left arm of the combiner robot Defensor. Maybe that arm never punches anything?

First Aid is an avowed pacifist. When the Insecticons attacked an inhabited city on Earth, Optimus Prime called upon the Protectobots to evacuate the civilians caught in the crossfire. First Aid helped an injured man discovered by Streetwise. Later, as Earth's orbit was diverted to the Sun by the Combaticons, First Aid brought civilians to a meat locker that Groove and Streetwise had commandeered to help the humans cool down. The Revenge of Bruticus

First Aid, as part of Defensor, was the arm that wielded the rifle which totally blew up Bruticus. Afterwards, he was with the Protectobots when they saved some window-washers from a burning skyscraper. Later still, First Aid and the other Protectobots were ordered to help defend Autobot Headquarters from a Decepticon attack. They merged into Defensor and activated his useless force field, which almost immediately deactivated, allowing the Decepticons to blast Defensor back into his component parts. B.O.T. (episode)

In the year 2006, First Aid was on Cybertron for the planet's first peace conference. He participated in a surprise birthday party for Daniel Witwicky along with Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Warpath, Groove and Wheelie. The Combaticons then attacked a nearby shuttle bay, hoping to scrap the ships which would be used to ferry delegates to the conference. First Aid happily blasted away at the Combaticons. After the battle, First Aid was tending to a serious wound Magnus suffered on his back, when he used his own body to shield Wheelie from a Decepticon attack. When attention turned to the damaged shuttle, Ultra Magnus insisted First Aid repair the ship first and deal with his injuries later. Guess he forgot First Aid was a doctor, not a mechanic! (Ol' Ratchet sure wouldn't have taken no lip — he would have disconnected the patient's vocal processor first.) Surprise Party

When Superion took heavy fire over the Planet of Junk, Sky Lynx brought him back to Cybertron for repairs. First Aid arrived and began patching up the super-robot. The Big Broadcast of 2006 (episode)

The Autobots were asked to help the Dutch authorities deal with French rebels. First Aid wondered why the humans were always fighting amongst themselves. After dispersing the human aggressors, First Aid then helped out Blades when his comrade was shot down by Galvatron. While the Autobots held off the loser-ish Decepticons, First Aid carried Blades back to Metroplex for repairs. After he finished, the Autobot medic responded to an intruder alert and confronted the Decepticon Swindle stealing Metroplex's transformation cog. Unfortunately, Swindle managed to make off with his loot because the pacifist Autobot refused to fight back. Despite Rodimus Prime's attempts to convince him that they didn't expect First Aid to compromise his beliefs, he felt he was a liability to the Autobots and left. After helping some old junker robot chug down some oil and repair some refrigerators, First Aid received a pep talk from Hot Spot, which convinced him to come back to help the Autobots. While Trypticon and Metroplex fought it out, First Aid bravely entered the Autobot giant and re-aligned the stolen transformation cog to suit Metroplex, allowing the Autobot city to transform fully and defeat Trypticon. The Ultimate Weapon

Later in 2006, First Aid transported Jessica Morgan to County General Hospital after she was injured in a battle between the Technobots and the Terrorcons. Despite his helping to restore her ability to walk, the fact that First Aid was a robot had some negative consequences because some people are jerks. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1
Japanese cartoon continuity
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers
When the Decepticon combiners attacked a baseball stadium in Japan, the Protectobots and Aerialbots raced to the rescue. After attending to the blaze created by Menasor's destruction, First Aid and his team combined into Defensor. However, Defensor's central component was damaged battling Bruticus; with Hot Spot out of action, the Protectobots could not maintain their super-robot form. Getting an idea, the Autobots' human friend Kenji told Superion to shoot out the legs of the Decepticon super-robots. With their legs damaged, Menasor and Bruticus were left open for First Aid and the other small Protectobots to link up as their new legs, taking over the Decepticons' locomotion, sending them out to sea. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 5

Later, the Constructicons were paving over a natural island paradise, and the Autobots sent a rescue party to save the wildlife and their friends on the island. Due to the medical needs of the mission, First Aid replaced Slingshot with the Aerialbots to form Superion. Even linked together, First Aid and the Aerialbots were outclassed against both Devastator and Trypticon, until Hound generated a hologram of Metroplex to distract the dino-base Decepticon, sending him over a cliff. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 6

Scramble City cartoon
First Aid and the Protectobots participated in the Scramble City project under Ultra Magnus's direction, working towards the construction of Metroplex. After the Decepticons uncovered their secret building site, the Protectobots rode into battle alongside the newly completed Metroplex. First Aid and his comrades arrived and formed Defensor just in time to act as the harbinger of Metroplex and his really big gun. Scramble City

The Great Transformer War
In 2010, Galvatron kidnapped the scientist Dalton in order to upgrade his combiner warriors. First Aid and the Protectobots joined forces with the Aerialbots to rescue Dalton from inside Trypticon. Superion was heavily damaged in the first strike run, however, and Hot Spot needed time in his repair bay mode to bring the Aerialbots back to fighting strength. While Blades snuck into Trypticon alone to rescue Dalton, First Aid, Streetwise and Groove defended Hot Spot against both Menasor and Bruticus. They held out long enough for the Aerialbots to be revived. After the Aerialbots distracted the Decepticons, Blades completed his mission and the Autobots rolled out for Scramble City with Dalton in tow. The Great Transformer War issue 1

The Headmasters cartoon
In 2011, Galvatron attacked Cybertron looking to take control of Vector Sigma. First Aid and the Protectobots were active in Cybertron's defense as Defensor during the assault. Four Warriors Come out of the Sky The Mystery of Planet Master Later, First Aid's team assembled on Earth at Ultra Magnus's command. Their mission was to stop the Decepticons from interfering with Hot Rod and the Headmasters, who were searching for the hidden location of the Matrix of Leadership. On a security sweep, the Protectobots ran across their old nemeses, the Combaticons, and went into battle. The two teams quickly assumed their combined forms as Bruticus and Defensor, as the fighting escalated. Birth of the Fantastic Double Prime

When Galvatron made another strike on Cybertron, this time to steal the super-metal Cybertonuron, First Aid and the Protectobots assembled before the Space Bridge on Earth to be transported into battle. Seeking out the Combaticons on the battlefield, the Protectobots soon formed Defensor and fought once more with Bruticus. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1 Defensor and Bruticus's battle continued as Defensor delivered a devastating smash to Bruticus's back. For at least part of the battle, the two teams disassembled again for man-to-man combat, Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 2

First Aid and the Protectobots were dispatched to Peru with the Trainbots when a volcano erupted, leaving a mountainside village in dire peril. Their rescue mission was blocked by the Predacons. Shoki and the Trainbots occupied the fiends so that the Protectobots could proceed on to the village and protect the innocent lives. Nevertheless, the Protectobots failed to reach the village, as they were intercepted by the Decepticons' second wave, the Headmasters. True to his devout pacifism, First Aid was not seen engaging in battle until the Protectobots formed Defensor. This left them grouped together and vulnerable, however, to an underhanded attack. Defensor was taken out of action by Mindwipe's paralysis ray, which was strong enough to force First Aid and the Protectobots apart and leave them completely immobilized. The Dormant Volcano Mysteriously Erupts

First Aid and the Protectobots were part of a strike team that flew to the moon to disrupt Scorponok's gathering of Decepticons. They immediately formed Defensor upon entering the battle. Return of the Immortal Emperor When the planet Sandra sent out a distress call asking for energy, the Autobots of Earth responded. While they were loading the Trainbots full of supplies, however, Galvatron and the Decepticons arrived to take the energy for themselves. First Aid and the Protectobots fought back against the enemy, and formed Defensor to counter Devastator on the battlefield. SOS from Planet Sandra

After the death of Ultra Magnus, the Autobots were desperately trying to pick up the slack during Sixshot's campaign of destruction around the globe. First Aid and the Protectobots assembled as Defensor to go out and confront Sixshot at one of the attack sites, but they apparently didn't fare too well. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg When the Decepticons seemingly abandoned Earth, First Aid and the Protectobots assisted Spike in rebuilding the planet after the enemy's departure. On one occasion, they located Sixshot's old command base. By combining into Defensor, the Protectobots helped Raiden and Computron obliterate the base, wiping out all trace of the Decepticons' presence. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 1)

Following a lengthy period of inactivity, the Decepticons renewed their attacks on Earth. With Fortress still off in space, Spike Witwicky dispatched First Aid and the Protectobots to attend to the threats. In Canberra, Australia, the Protectobots confronted Bruticus at one of Scorponok's new Death Towers. As Defensor, the Protectobots were beaten severely by Bruticus, and First Aid was even knocked out of the arm socket. Using Scramble Power, Defensor switched Streetwise up to his shoulder and reattached First Aid as a leg, still carrying his fireball cannon. Despite this cunning(?) trick, Defensor was defeated by Bruticus. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 1) As part of Defensor, First Aid participated in the Autobots final battle with Scorponok's Decepticons at the North Pole. He lent his energies to the Headmasters' Head Formation to revitalize Fortress Maximus at the critical moment. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 2)
Generation 1
noteukonly
First Aid and the other Protectobots were created on Earth by Wheeljack and the Autobots after they stole a recording of Devastator's combiner transformation sequence and modified it (and after Optimus Prime and Buster Witwicky shared a Matrix-induced vision of the future with the Special Teams in it) Second Generation!.

Having learned of a Decepticon plot to acquire the human-made hydrothermocline, Optimus Prime brought the Protectobots with him to Energy Futures Industries in order to guard the device. After Megatron and the Combaticons arrived ready for a fight, the Transformers allowed themselves to be convinced of a better solution by Ethan Zachary, an employee of EFI. Zachary would upload their minds into a video simulation program known as Multi-World, allowing the Transformers to do battle without damaging the hydrothermocline or the surrounding area. Inside the game world, First Aid and Streetwise were exploring Vineland when their path was blocked by a web of thick vines. First Aid wanted to blast through, but Streetwise thought better of it and merely lifted the vines out of their way. They were caught off-guard by the Combaticons Brawl and Swindle, but were then miraculously saved by the living vines they had refrained from destroying moments ago. First Aid then used his decrystallizer cannon on the Decepticons, making them brittle enough for Streetwise to shatter with a burst from his compressed air cannon.

Apparently, First Aid's pacifism doesn't extend to virtual combat. Afterdeath!

First Aid was later displaced to limbo right before Bumblebee's eyes, in order to make room for Death's Head. Wanted:Galvatron — Dead or Alive!

First Aid later attempted to console a despondent Ratchet after the death of Optimus Prime. Why he didn't help Ratchet try to restore Prime, we'll never know. Funeral for a Friend!

While not seen on-panel being killed in the Underbase Saga, he was possibly deactivated in that battle, since he was next seen in a life support capsule as Optimus briefly considered using a Matrix fragment to revive him after Ratchet's disappearance. The Greatest Gift of All!

Generation 2
When Optimus Prime and Grimlock discovered the threat of the Cybertronian Empire, they called in Autobots scattered across the galaxy, including First Aid. And, when Grimlock chose to disobey Prime's directives and make a tactical first strike against Jhiaxus's ships, First Aid went with him. They were quickly found out and captured, though, leaving it to Optimus to bail them out of trouble. Devices and Desires! (Marvel)

Sometime later, First Aid was working with a science team alongside Perceptor and Wheeljack. They attempted to find out what had devastated the population of J'asik, down to the cellular level. Samples taken from the bodies helped the team identify the killer, known as the Swarm, as an offshoot of the Cybertronian race. Swarm (issue)
Due to the requirements of transformation, there are some significant compromises in the appearance of the vehicle, such as the rather visible hinge joints for the front end and the big gap in the back of the ambulance to facilitate his knee joint. There is a 5mm peg hole at the back to attach his large "Decrystallizer Cannon" to this mode.

Marvel comics continuity

Dreamwave comics continuity
First Aid was on Cybertron with the other Protectobots when they decided to counter the threat of Devastator joining the Ultracon faction. Escalation (Dreamwave)

Millions of years later, the Protectobots battled Menasor as Defensor when the Stunticons escaped from a penal facility... and lost, big time. Passive Aggression Defensor later aided in the Autobot insurrection. Revelation (War and Peace) After the Autobots regained power, First Aid and the Protectobots searched Shockwave's clone lab, finding Runabout and Runamuck barely alive, having been attacked by an unknown assailant. First Aid was seen administering medical help to the heavily damaged Battlechargers. Black Sunshine
Synopsis
Detonated by the Quintessons, the planet Quintessa explodes as the Autobots flee. They escape the planet's destruction, but their ship is smashed by a chunk of debris, sending the group hurtling through space. Eventually, Ultra Magnus calculates that they will soon impact an object, but isn't sure if it's a planet or a ship. Rodimus tells him to relax and enjoy the ride.

Meanwhile, Cyclonus briefs Galvatron on the recent developments, including the creation of a space platform to guard Earth. Intrigued, Galvatron alters course, deciding to punish the humans for assuming that they could build something to defend themselves against him. Some of the Sweeps are unnerved by Galvatron's behavior, but Scourge tells them to shut up.

Blurr and Wheelie, carrying Metroplex's transformation cog, arrive in Earth's solar system, and spot Galvatron. They warn Outpost One, but Galvatron destroys the station with ease, then turns his sights on the Autobots. Fleeing to the planet Jupiter, the Autobots are forced to abandon ship with Metroplex's cog and end up falling into the upper atmosphere. Galvatron uses his cannon to electrically charge a nearby storm cell, causing a violent and explosive reaction which disrupts the transformation cogs of both Blurr and Wheelie, and ejects them from the planet. The Decepticons then depart for Chaar. Blaster sends warning to Mars, where Marissa Faireborn of Earth Defense Command heads out on a rescue mission.

Meanwhile, the Quintessons are contemplating how best to celebrate the death of the Autobot leader, when they learn that Rodimus has survived. They conclude that they have no choice but to make an alliance with the one group who can help them: the Decepticons.

The Autobots crash land on a bizarre planetoid named Goo. They soon discover that they can walk in the planet's gum-like surface, but cannot get out. Kup points out that even though they're stranded, it could be worse. Predictably, a giant machine arrives and begins sucking up various garbage. Springer is caught and sliced up, and Rodimus is next. Despite Arcee and Kup's pleas, Rodimus stands his ground, letting the machine pull him up; he manages to clog the blades with some of the goo, causing it to crash. Judge Deliberata is surprised, claiming that the Autobots weren't programmed for self-sacrifice.

On Chaar, the Quintessons approach the Decepticons with an offer of energon. The battered Decepticons are at first hesitant, but once Dead End samples some energon and lives, the others dogpile on it. The Quintessons make their proposal: in return for unlimited energon, the Decepticons will destroy the Autobots for them. The Decepticons are nervous, saying that they can't take Cybertron in their present condition, but the Quintessons tell them that Rodimus Prime is on Goo with only a small number of Autobots to guard him. Although it's an offer the Decepticons are eager to accept, Blitzwing is suspicious of the Quintessons, finding them familiar. Motormaster decides to have a vote. The yays have it, but Blitzwing decides to remain on Chaar. The Quintessons are pleased, saying that the Decepticons will soon be theirs...again?

From her ship, Faireborn detects metal fragments which were blown all the way to Jupiter's moon of Io. On the surface of the Jovian moon, Wheelie and Blurr wake up, not realizing that they aren't alone...

Arriving at Chaar, Galvatron is incensed when Blitzwing informs him that the Decepticons left following others, though he doesn't much care who. Galvatron vows to reclaim his rightful place as Decepticon leader.

On Goo, the Autobots are searching for a way to shut off whatever equipment is keeping the goo warm and soft, allowing them to smash their way out. Suddenly, the Quintesson ship arrives, and a fleet of Decepticons emerges, firing at the trapped Autobots.
Galvatron: Hahah, no, no! It's music. The symphony of destruction, and the anthem of agony!
:—Galvatron really needs to see a head doctor.

Cyclonus: Bravo, Galvatron. The Autobots' destruction is assured.<br>
Galvatron: Assured is not enough. I told you I want their heads, Cyclonus!<br>
[moments later]<br>
Cyclonus: Mighty Galvatron... where are the Autobots' heads?!<br>
Galvatron: [whacks him] What does it matter? Their destruction is assured!
"How pleasant the feeling, to know the Autobots and their Matrix of Leadership have been destroyed."<br>
"It is a day so long in coming that I am uncertain how to celebrate it."<br>
"Perhaps... a quiet chuckle."<br>
"Very well then. Let us... chuckle."
:—The Quintessons loved it. It was much better than Cats.

Quintesson: We have not come to kill you. We have come to offer you a proposition.<br>
Dead End: Uh—Swindle! I think this is your department.<br>
Swindle: First, see if we can trust 'em. Taste one of the energon cubes.
:—Send the guy named "Swindle" to negotiate. Always a good idea.

"Forget everything I told you about heroism, RUN!"
:—Kup decides to change his tune when Rodimus Prime nearly faces death by alien garbage truck.

"Well?! Where are they?"<br>
"You, uh... pose an interesting question, my lord."
:—Galvatron and Cyclonus wonder where the Decepticon army went.

"Mark this moment well. For when the Decepticons eliminate the Autobots, they take the first step to their own destruction as well."
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* The inside of Magnus's mouth is red as he announces the Autobots' trajectory.
* As Galvatron exits the warp gate, the gate's energy is shown streaming out of it. The previous scene showed the energy precisely confined within the gate's boundaries; later portrayals of warp gates would remain consistent with this. It looks like the animators might have conflated a view of Galvatron's passage within the warp gate with a view of space outside it.
* As Blurr decides to try and lose Galvatron around Jupiter, his lip flap is far slower than his rate of speech. In the same scene, Wheelie's voice starts getting higher. Just wait, it'll get worse.
* The first shot of this sequence has Blurr and Wheelie standing around and staring at a blank wall for no apparent reason; there were probably supposed to be controls and view screens there.
* The establishing shot of Autobot City shows some waterfalls that aren't moving at all. (That makes up for the frozen waterfall that spontaneously unfroze last season.)
* The EDC base on Mars totally changes shape and size between its two establishing shots.
* When Galvatron transforms to destroy the Autobot shuttle, his arm-mounted cannon flies off of his arm and off-screen... and a new one emerges from his body to replace it in his cannon mode.
* Improbable viewpoints:
** The Quintessons get a tracking pan view of Rodimus and company floating through space. (Four of the five Aerialbots are missing; only Air Raid is shown.)
* The mouth of the Quintesson reporting the Autobots' trajectory turns gray instead of black for several frames.
* All five of the Aerialbots are supposed to be with Rodimus & company, but only Silverbolt and Air Raid are actually shown.
* It's an AKOM episode, so watch for Grimlock's outdated head design.
* When the Autobots land on Goo, only the skull face of Deliberata is shown arriving. A second later, Kup picks up the same skull face before dropping it back into the goo. Did that one face just fall off?
* Rodimus has his early-casting voice when he says "I don't think it's the welcome wagon". In the same scene, the inside of Magnus's mouth is blue.
* Silverbolt doesn't move his mouth when he says "I'll fly over and see."
* The idea is that the erupting storm blasts Wheelie and Blurr out of Jupiter's atmosphere, but the animation makes it look like they just randomly start flying that way.
* Wheelie says he can't control his transformations, but he doesn't actually transform.
* After having a gray gun last episode, Rodimus is back to the red gun he had in Part 1.
* Rodimus's lower legs are orange instead of red in the second shot of him and the others firing at the garbage scow.
* Springer says "No go!" about his failure to escape from the goo before he's even activated his rotor blades.
* Springer returns to robot mode with no transformation noise.
* Rodimus's spoiler ridge is yellow instead of orange:
** As he leads the others to try and help Springer.
** During the whole sequence of him bringing down the garbage scow.
* When Rodimus reacts to Springer's destruction, his eyes are black instead of blue.
* Not nearly enough Springer parts come out of the machine to make up the complete Springer.
* "They wanna make a deal with us" is spoken in Swindle's voice, but Blitzwing is shown speaking.
* Astrotrain is missing some details on his back as he dives on the energon cube pile.
* Magnus has a red mouth interior again as he reacts to Rodimus stopping the garbage scow; the underside rim of his helmet is also huge. And gray instead of blue.
* Quintesson Deliberata finally pops up again when he's needed to speak a line, after being absent for the entire preceding sequence. His skull face is properly attached, so, we may never know what was up with the skull face that Kup dropped into the goo.
* The establishing shot of Chaar is pretty clearly Goo, which we just left in the previous scene.
* As Swindle denounces the Quints' offer, the top of his torso is purple instead of yellow, and Drag Strip's head is yellow instead of brown.

* The entire next sequence is an infamous continuity and animation FUBAR, as the Decepticons seem to teleport all over the place between shots:
** When the Decepticons react to "Destroy the Autobots", Motormaster is shown with Swindle and Drag Strip. The previous shot ("That means it probably is.) had Wildrider in that spot.
** Onslaught very clearly walks up to protest the Quintessons' proposal of attacking Cybertron. The next shot is a reaction shot of the Combaticons, with Onslaught down on his knees, and reacting in protest to his own statement! Swindle is also on his knees behind him, even though he was shown with some Stunticons just a shot before. AKOM cheats some "expressive" motion from the Combaticons by just sliding static drawings of them around on the background. Best of all, Bruticus - the combined form of the five Combaticons - is standing right behind them! His legs are switched around, and he's the same size as his components.
** In the next shot of the Decepticons, Onslaught is now sitting next to Soundwave and Astrotrain, and Swindle is now behind Dead End.
** Rumble is the size of Octane and Soundwave.
** The first shot of Blitzwing ("They lie!") shows him behind Rumble and Octane, but when we switch to a view from behind him, he's alone.
** In the wide shot as Dead End agrees with the plan, the Autobot Fireflight is shown sitting with the Decepticons. Same shot: Drag Strip's head is yellow again. Amazingly, this shot actually consistently keeps Blitzwing behind Octane and Rumble. Dead End, Soundwave and Onslaught are also still together, but Astrotrain has vanished from between them, and Rumble is in the space behind Dead End where Swindle should be.
** Yeah. It's bad, even for AKOM.
* When the Quintessons say they must act quickly, one Quintesson is missing the lower half of his face and another is missing altogether, with just a telltale beam of energy where he should be.
* Only three Sweeps arrive on Chaar. The number following Galvatron up to now has been five to six. The Sweep in the rear has gray legs and gray back details, even though his siblings on either side are colored correctly. Subsequent shots show several additional Sweeps.
* Shots of Galvatron and his men flying over Chaar have Sweeps colored quite creatively:
** "We have fallen upon hard times": a Dirge-colored Sweep
** Panning shot: Swindle, Soundwave, and Dirge-colored Sweeps
** "Soon I shall raise the Deceptions": Bombshell, Grimlock, and maybe others.
* The top of Blitzwing's head is purple instead of yellow as he struggles to remember the Quints' name.
* Cyclonus's jet windows aren't colored in as Galvatron says "Who cares?"
* Wheelie and Blurr have switched positions from where they crashed; Wheelie was on Blurr's left, but now he's on Blurr's right.
* As he and Blurr awake on Io, Wheelie doesn't have his usual voice. The strained, high-pitched, whiny substitute used instead makes his usual voice sound like sweet music.
* The animation of the lipoles seems to portray them as giant walking beasts (and definitely portrays them as glowing and dripping acid from their fangs), with deep-throated snarls and growls. Nothing wrong so far, but next episode they'll be a swarm of tiny, non-glowing, non-acid-dripping, flying, high-pitched-squeaking creatures. Whether the animators misinterpreted the writer's directions in this episode, or the writer himself changed his mind between installments, remains unclear.
* Wheelie's final lines lack its usual processing (which was already not up to snuff in this episode.)
* Right in the middle of the discussion about how to shut off the inescapable goo... Rodimus just walks right out of it!
* Only Air Raid is shown during the final sequence on Goo; the other four Aerialbots are missing (again!)
* Rodimus says "What was that" in reaction to laser fire that hasn't happened yet.

* Another infamous cluster follows as the Decepticons pour out of the Quintesson ship and fire on the Autobots:
** The first shot features a light gray Seeker with a Blurr-like head bobber (maybe someone at AKOM was reading "Decepticon Patrol"?) and Shockwave colored like Long Haul.
** The second shot features a clearer shot of Shock Haul, as well as Shrapnel, who was reformatted into a Sweep during the Movie. Behind them, Dirge is missing his wings.
** If that doesn't seem so bad, wait until the same sequence continues next time!
* Although both the Kid Rhino and Shout! Factory versions of this episode contain the correct unique opening titles for the story (one of only two parts of "Five Faces of Darkness" on DVD that do), the Shout! version incorrectly uses the soundtrack to the standard season three opening as now found on the broadcast masters to all five parts.

Continuity errors
* The Autobot ship which looks exactly like Broadside is destroyed in the explosion of Quintessa. Broadside himself shows up alive and well later in the series, so... apparently that wasn't Broadside.
* The Aerialbots are clearly capable of at least limited space flight, as seen both in the previous episode, and the later episode "Fight or Flee". It therefore seems a bit silly for them to be tumbling helplessly through space.
* Spike is in his civilian clothes when he boards the Autobot ship. When it's destroyed a few seconds later, he's got on a space suit. Even if that was the first thing he did the instant he set foot on the ship, it sure doesn't look like he'd have time to change into it.
* The animation shows Marissa pushing a button and saying "On my way!" The next shot shows her ship rocketing off of its launching rail. The net effect is that she seems to have just been sitting there in this angled ship, waiting around for a mission.
* Rodimus is shown standing outside the garbage scow after he brings it down. Considering it came down right on top of him, he should really be inside it. (Or under it.)
* Kup says to Rodimus, "I've seen a lotta brave Autobots do a lotta brave things in my time, but nothing like that." With all Kup's experience, it's a little hard to swallow that that's the bravest thing he has ever witnessed.

ERRORS. OF. SCIENCE!
* Cyclonus's first line is muffled as if he were communicating by radio to Galvatron. Technically, that's actually correct, since they're in the soundless vacuum of space and should be communicating by radio. But it's inconsistent with every other portrayal of Transformers communicating in space, including the rest of this very scene. Anyway, wouldn't super-advanced space robots have hi-fi communicators that wouldn't sound like walkie-talkies?
* Trooper Sullivan is shown radioing Earth Defense Command with a hand-held radio as he's floating through space. The "mouth plate" of his helmet even moves as he does so. Unlike the super-advanced space robots, he does not get a "really talking by radio" pass for this.
* Jupiter's ring appears to be composed of scrap metal (instead of ice.) The planet itself is shown as a dusky orange instead of the banded red, white, brown and tan of the actual planet.
* The Autobot shuttle loops around a gray, homogeneous moon of Jupiter. It's not clear that this has to be Io, but if it is, it's all wrong. The real moon is orange and red, with black and white splotches, and looks like a pizza. Later, when Wheelie and Blurr are ejected from Jupiter's atmosphere, a distant Io (for sure this time!) is shown looking a lot like post-Movie Cybertron, silvery with spikey buildings poking out into space.
* During the establishing zoom-in toward Earth, two planet-like objects are in the foreground, in close proximity to the other. The smaller one is the Moon, but there's no real-world body that could be the other one. The reddish color may mean it's supposed to be Mars (which comes into play in the following scene), but it's waaaaay too close to the Moon for that.
* Wow. Who knew that storms on Jupiter were so... flammable?
* There probably isn't life on Io.

Trivia
* The sequence on Goo is the inspiration for the last portion of the Five Faces of Darkness custom title sequence, though in a clever spoiler-avoiding twist, Springer actually does get free from the goo in the title animation.
* Rodimus refers to Springer with the nickname "Springo". It recurs only once, in the next episode.
* Spike mentions that the gooey substance on Goo reminds him of stuff he put under his chair in high school. Although this is disgusting, it does raise a valid question: did anyone see Spike actually go to school during the first two seasons? Also, why the hell would anybody stick gum under their OWN chair?
Headmaster

Headmasters are a type of symbiotic variation on the Transformer lifeform in which a smaller sentient being, frequently but not exclusively organic, transforms into the head of a larger robot. The process by which this is accomplished varies by continuity. In conversation, the term "Headmaster" can apply to both the primary partner (the head) and the significant other (the body).

Headmaster bonding in most continuities occurs between two sentient beings, but there have been cases in which the head or the body (such as the Transtectors in the Japanese anime or the Sunstreaker clones in the IDW continuity) is a non-sentient construct controlled entirely by the other partner.

When it occurs between two sentient beings, the benefits of the Headmaster procedure are many: The partner gains control of a larger, more powerful body, and the Transformer gains an extra perspective on the battlefield, the psychic binary bonding involved allowing him to draw on both his own ideas, tactics, and instincts as well as those of his partner as quickly as if they were coming from his own head (since they are).

The Headmaster process has one glaring disadvantage: when separated from their partners, they have no head. Most can continue to function as vehicles without their partners, but can do little in robot mode besides stand around.

Fiction
Marvel Comics
The Headmaster technology was primarily the invention of the Nebulan scientist Arcana and was designed originally to let Nebulans utilize the bodies of Autobots to defend their world, something they did not trust the Autobots enough to let them do on their own.

The organic half of the Headmaster pairings were able to transform by use of a special suit of "intra-restruction armor" and a "cybernetic mindlink helmet" that interfaced with bio-cybernetic augmentation in the surgically altered humanoid. As described by Arcana, the process as originally enacted allowed the Autobots (still separate, disembodied heads at that point) to radio control their old bodies, while the Nebulan partners observed and planned strategy. This joint cooperation of two minds allowed greatly increased agility and superior aim. The fate of the original Autobot heads was not revealed, however. Broken Glass!

When Galen was killed while separated from Fortress Maximus, Spike demonstrated that it was possible for an organic to control/communicate with the larger robot's form with only the control helmet, as he took control of Fortress Maximus with nothing more than Galen's control helmet. Trial by Fire!

Later, a weakness of the ad hoc nature of the Headmaster partnership became apparent. As the partnerships continued, two minds could meld into one, or conflict on nearly every level. For example, Spike and Fort Max were two separate minds sharing one body, with each dominant in his own form and able to converse with the other; while Lord Zarak and Scorponok seemed to reach some sort of fusion where he was both beings merged into one, with Scorponok to all intents and purposes becoming entirely subsumed by Zarak's personality (to the extent that, during the battle with Unicron, "Scorponok"'s interior monologue identifies himself as being Zarak merely filling the role of Scorponok, implying that the original Scorponok psyche was essentially gone). A similar situation developed between Powermaster Optimus Prime and Hi-Q, except in the reverse.

Classics
The Headmaster process is reversible. Cheap Shots

Generation 1 cartoon
In this continuity, the Headmaster process was the brainchild of Brainstorm, who had advocated that using an organic partner would be a good strategy in combat with the Decepticons. It also seems much less invasive for the organic humanoid involved. No surgical alteration is apparently needed on their part, and the process seems to consist mainly of altering the Transformer's head to 1) have a control center for a partner to sit at inside and 2) transform around the partner into a fancy exosuit. While some who have undergone it have commented at feeling a closer bond with their respective partners, there is no reason to believe there is any true psychic connection between them as in the binary bonding of other continuities. The Rebirth, Part 1

Japanese animated continuity
Attempting to escape the wars on Cybertron, a group of diminutive Cybertronians (most of them only a little larger than human beings) fled the planet, only to have their ship crash on the hazardous, inhospitable planet Master. The need for survival fostered several technological advances (helped in part by technology derived from a time-traveling spaceship that crashed on the planet sometime later). Chief among them was the creation of "Transtectors": large, lifeless robot bodies which the smaller robots could connect to and control. The small Cybertronians had not yet actually mastered the art of transformation, however, and had to undergo rigorous mental and physical training in order to become "Headmasters" (their name, obviously enough, derived from the planet itself).

The Headmasters subsequently migrated from Master and joined the Autobot and Decepticon forces on Cybertron and Earth, leading to a lengthy conflict that ultimately resulted in both factions departing the Earth for a prolonged period of time. With easy access to Earth cut off, leaving its safety in doubt should it be attacked by Decepticons in the future, the Autobots on Master created Master-Braces, technology that harnessed the mysterious Chōkon Power to transform humans and allow them to connect to Transtectors and become Headmasters themselves. A set of six Master-Braces and Transtectors were dispatched to Earth, but half the shipment was stolen by Decepticons, and both factions subsequently used the technology to turn three young human children in Headmasters in defense of Earth.

Cybertronian Headmasters possess numerous energy-manipulating superpowers. They are able to exchange Transtectors freely with their fellow Headmasters to increase their power levels and can link up with each other in the Head Formation for various destructive results. In contrast, human Headmasters do not possess any of these powers, but have their own natural physical strength and reflexes enhanced many times over by the energies filling their bodies. Their cellular structures undergo some form of ill-defined holistic transformation which allows them somehow to transform their actual, physical bodies into heads. However, unlike organic Headmasters in other continuities, they do not have to undergo any permanent alteration; they are capable of "turning off" their powers and becoming normal human beings with ease, the only drawback being that they are unable to remove the Master-Braces that give them their powers.

Dreamwave comics
Headmaster technology was originally developed on Cybertron, to be used in conjunction with Micromaster technology. It would have allowed a normal-sized robot to transform its head into a small body to conserve Energon. The process was perfected on Nebulon to allow organic beings to act as the head of a Cybertronian body, using aspects of combiner technology.
The process was designed to put the Nebulon in control of the body, but the actual process as perfected by Brainstorm and Arcana resulted in a mental bonding and partnership, with the robot generally maintaining control. Modified organic beings are able to contort during transformation, though appear normal when not wearing the Headmaster armor. Out of their armor, they are indistinguishable from unmodified beings, though they possess improved strength and endurance.

Profile art depicted the Headmaster heads as larger "mecha" that the human partners pilot. More Than Meets The Eye (G1)
ongoing
The Headmaster technology is a product of the shadowy human organization known as the Machination, using technology developed by Scorponok on the planet Nebulos. Following a tip offered to him by Swindle, Ultra Magnus found schematics for enhancing a biological entity with Cybertronian technology, in effect producing a "transformable man". Magnus was able to determine that Nebulan businessman Mo Zarak had been subjected to this process shortly before Scorponok fled the premises. Spotlight: Ultra Magnus

Approximately 18 years later, the Machination captured Sunstreaker and Hunter O'Nion. They dismantled Sunstreaker and subjected Hunter to an extensive regimen of surgery and implants. Subsequently, they attempted to brainwash him into one of their soldiers. Escalation (IDW) Hunter resisted and was able to contact Sunstreaker, allowing him to become a Headmaster to fight for the Autobots. Devastation (IDW)

Initially, all Headmasters created by the Machination were non-sentient, guided by their human pilots. As well, all of these models were replicas of Sunstreaker, wired into the Autobot's actual head to help coordinate their movements. However, the success of these initial forays into the technology allowed for the first true binary-bond, enabling Abraham Dante to combine with his Decepticon master Scorponok to facilitate his rebirth. Devastation (IDW)
:The three 1988 Autobot Headmasters transform into Earthen land vehicles. Siren and Hosehead share a rescue vehicle theme, occasionally causing inattentive fans to mistake Nightbeat for a police car. The Nebulan companions are considerably smaller and simpler than those of the 1987 Headmasters, although they are backwards compatible with the previous year's figures. In fact, when plugged into 1987 Headmaster bodies, the 1988 Nebulan figures display the Tech Spec readouts for their 1988 robot counterparts, suggesting the simplification of the tumbler system on the Tech Spec readouts into a simple fixed display to have been a late design decision. Each comes with a "helmet" to complete the robot's head; the helmet doubles as a vehicle-mode "seat" for the figure to sit in. Unlike the Autobots, they do not sport additional "helmets" and pistol/antennae.
When you break down the individual components of Fastlane's personality he doesn't come off sounding very good. He's a totally immature, reckless, thrill-seeking, show off. Surprising then to find that he's quite well liked by both humans and Autobots. The fact is there's just no malice in Fastlane's antics, he's mischievous at worst and his stunts are usually quite entertaining to watch. His most daring stunts can be a bit dangerous to others who happen to be nearby (he once caused a HUGE accident on Cybertron by doing a 360 in confining heavy traffic at 500 miles per hour) but no one's ever been really hurt by them except for Fastlane himself when he pushes his design just a little too far.
Fastlane and Cloudraker were once friends with another pair of Cybertronian Clones named Pounce and Wingspan. The two duos lost contact with each other for some time, during which Pounce and Wingspan joined the Decepticons. Fastlane and Cloudraker were confronted by their old friends, who were looking to take a golden skull from their Autobot counterparts and use it to collect a unique energy source from the Pirate Planet. While trying to keep the skull from the Decepticon Clones, Fastlane and his brother made contact with the Autobot Headmasters aboard the Battleship Maximus. Mystery of the Space Pirate Ship

Millions of years ago, on the troubled planet Cybertron, Shockwave was the military ruler of the city-state of Tarn. Following a botched attempt by Vos to ignite war between Iacon and Tarn, Tarn went to war with Vos, and both cities were destroyed by an exchange of photon missiles. The survivors of both cities—presumably including Shockwave—were gathered together by the ex-gladiator Megatron, who used their bitterness towards Iacon to unite them under his control as the Decepticons. State Games

As Military Commander, Shockwave planned the strategy of the Decepticon assault on the Ark. After the Autobots had successfully destroyed the asteroids threatening Cybertron, Megatron and the other Decepticons attacked the ship while Shockwave remained behind on their ship to pilot it and act as a potential backup. When the Ark subsequently crashed on Earth, deactivating all those within, Shockwave followed the ship down, but the planet's magnetic fields caused a malfunction in his guidance systems, resulting in him landing half a world away, in the tropical Antarctic jungle known as the Savage Land.

The Ark's dying computer detected Shockwave's presence on the planet, and reactivated five Autobots to combat him, rebuilding them in the shapes of the Savage Land's native dinosaurs. The Last Stand These "Dinobots" battled Shockwave, a battle that ended in permanent stalemate when Snarl brought down the mountain that Shockwave stood upon, knocking all the combatants into a tar pit. Repeat Performance!

In 1984, when the rest of the Transformers aboard the Ark were awakened by a volcanic eruption, the Autobots attempted to track down their five missing comrades. A sensor drone tracked them to the Savage Land, but inadvertently wound up reactivating Shockwave, who headed straight for Oregon. He arrived just as the Autobots had claimed victory over the Decepticons, and his explosive entry saw all the weakened combatants knocked off-line. The Last Stand

Rounding up the bodies, Shockwave took control of the Ark, strung up the Autobots for spare parts, decapitated Optimus Prime and restored his fellow Decepticons back to health. This came as something of a rude shock to Megatron, who awoke to find that Shockwave had decided it was only logical for him to take over leadership of the Decepticons in light of Megatron's failure. After declaring his leadership and the superiority of Decepticons over humans, he flew off to begin his conquests. The New Order

Shockwave's first attack was on the new offshore oil-drilling platform of tycoon G.B. Blackrock. Tearing his way through the rig's defenses, he quickly secured it for use as a secondary base of operations. Unbeknownst to Shockwave, the violent attack crippled the human Josie Beller, leading to her transformation into Circuit Breaker. When Shockwave returned to the Ark, a weakened Megatron engaged him in combat for leadership. Despite his power, Megatron was soundly defeated. Shockwave dumped Megatron's broken body before the troops he had once commanded, and demanded that they vow to serve Shockwave alone. They didn't argue. Megatron grudgingly swore his fealty as well. The Worse of Two Evils!

Shockwave's next attack came through Soundwave and Laserbeak, who took control of the Blackrock Aerospace Assembly Plant Number One. After Soundwave reported his success, Shockwave traveled from the oil platform to the Ark, checking in with Megatron and reminding him again of where he stood. From the Ark, he transported Optimus Prime's head to the Aerospace Plant. Shockwave effortlessly blasted his way past the Army cordon surrounding the plant, all the while lecturing the foolish humans about the raw strength of his armor. Repeat Performance!

Shockwave quickly began setting up the Aerospace Plant's facilities to carry out his plans; however, this was rather boring work for Decepticon warriors, leading to some diminished morale; Shockwave had to sic Buzzsaw on Frenzy when the latter started throwing a temper tantrum over threats from the human G.B. Blackrock. Still, accepting Starscream's argument that morale could use a boost, Shockwave granted permission for Starscream and Frenzy to destroy Blackrock's weapon. DIS-Integrated Circuits!

After some time, the plant was ready, and Shockwave used it to create the bodies of the Constructicons, whose brain modules had already been brought to life with the power of the Creation Matrix drained from Prime's head. Shockwave then began work on his next project, the superjet Jetfire, but was startled to find that he could not bring him to life. The Next Best Thing to Being There!

Shockwave had the plant's captive workers begin construction of a hundred jet warriors; meanwhile, he tried yet again to bring Jetfire to life. When the process failed, he deduced that Optimus Prime must have hidden the Matrix somewhere. Scanning the memory banks of Rumble, he discovered that Optimus had transferred the Matrix into the mind of the human, Buster Witwicky. Shockwave programmed Jetfire to capture Buster, but the boy was able to use the power of the Matrix to bring the robot under his own control. Brainstorm!

Buster used Jetfire to travel to the Aerospace Plant, intending to free Optimus Prime. Jetfire's pre-programmed response to an Air Force attack, however, meant that Buster was knocked unconscious and delivered to Shockwave as a captive.

The Autobots' attempts to keep Buster away from the Decepticons led Shockwave to suspect that his headquarters was bugged. Soundwave soon ferreted out a telephone link that was allowing the Autobots to listen in on their plans. Shockwave used the link to manipulate the Autobots into bringing their leader's body with them to a nearby swamp, where his head was to be deposited, there to corrode away forever. The head that actually arrived there, however, was a false one constructed by Shockwave, which attacked the Autobots once it was joined with Optimus Prime's body.

Shockwave had reckoned without Buster's fighting back, however; as Jetfire was about to take the real head of Optimus Prime and pitch it into the swamp, the captive human used his Matrix powers to take control of Jetfire and knock out Shockwave. Shockwave awoke to find both Optimus Prime and the human workers gone; he quickly deduced what had happened, and flew to the battle site. There he engaged the newly-whole Optimus in a one-on-one battle which ended when the Decepticon leader was tossed into a swamp. Prime Time!

Finally extricating himself from the swamp after being trapped for several months, Shockwave returned to leadership of the Decepticons with some new ill-fated plans involving stealing sonic energy from a rock concert Rock and Roll-Out! and attempting to exploit Bumblebee as a weak link in the Autobot forces Plight of the Bumblebee!.

When Wheeljack and Ratchet built Buster a mechanoid battle suit, the human test-drove it by attacking Frenzy. Shockwave responded to the attack, only to be briefly blinded when a desperate Buster flung a handful of sand into his optic sensor. The darkness this brought about revived memories of his four-million-year burial and his humiliating swamp submergence, and an enraged, barely-sane Shockwave disregarded logic in a desire for revenge that saw him pursue Buster throughout the night. As the new day dawned, Buster made one final attack with all the suit's power, which destroyed it but merely injured Shockwave. Seizing the boy in his hand, Shockwave was about to crush the life from him when the Autobot forces arrived to rescue him. Robot Buster! His rationality returning, Shockwave realized that Buster could potentially be a powerful tool to use against the Autobots, and had the Constructicons attempt to abduct him, but during the battle, Soundwave discovered that the Matrix had planted in Buster's mind a vision for the future of the Transformer race. Devastation Derby! Shockwave watched intently as Soundwave tapped into Buster's dreams, and witnessed a vision of combiner Transformers battling. Little did he know that Soundwave was also beaming the vision to Megatron (now operating independently of Shockwave), who decided that it was time for him to retake Decepticon leadership. Shockwave and Megatron battled once more, but with Megatron at full health, the fight was much more evenly matched and drawn-out, and was even televised by the Decepticons' unwilling human ally, Robot Master. To prevent the Decepticons from being made to look like fools, Soundwave demanded they cease fighting and consent to a joint leadership. Begrudgingly, both agreed. Second Generation!

This joint leadership did not last long. Leaving Shockwave in charge of the Decepticons' Wyoming coal mine base, Megatron led a team of Decepticons to attack the Autobot base, only for the majority of their number to be deactivated and captured by Omega Supreme. At the same time, however, the Autobots attacked the Decepticon base to draw out Devastator, to learn more about the combiner process. With the day having firmly been won by the Autobots on both fronts, Megatron argued that although he may have charged into a trap, Shockwave had been ineffective enough to do nothing, and had allowed a trap to spring up around him. Bowing to the logic of this argument, Shockwave stepped down and allowed Megatron to resume sole command. Command Performances!

Shockwave's movements were unknown for the brief time that followed this embarrassment. He was absent from the Decepticons' base when the time-traveling future Decepticon Galvatron arrived from 2006 and temporarily disposed of Megatron, but returned not long thereafter. Wondering where everyone was, he was met by Thundercracker and Frenzy, who had escaped their confinement in the Autobot base, but then, abruptly, all three were mass-displaced into limbo when three future Autobots traveled back in time to thwart Galvatron's plans. Target: 2006 In limbo, Shockwave and his two companions battled alongside the similarly-displaced Optimus Prime, Prowl and Ratchet against the deadly illusions created by the dimension's native lifeforms, before returning to their natural place in space and time when the time-travellers returned to their point of origin. Distant Thunder!

It was not long before Shockwave began scheming to return to the position of leader, and when Megatron summoned the Decepticon hunters the Predacons to Earth to stalk Optimus Prime, he saw his opportunity. Conspiring with them, Shockwave arranged for the team to turn on Megatron during the hunt, depriving him of his weapons, expecting that he would have no chance against Prime one-on-one. Prey! When Megatron did not return, Shockwave believed him dead, but in truth, he had escaped to Cybertron—though this was of little concern to the cyclopean schemer, who took up the mantle of leadership in his absence again. It was not long after this that Galvatron returned, having traveled back from the future once more, and now dancing dangerously on the edge of sanity. Fearing the threat Galvatron might pose to his own leadership, Shockwave had the Decepticons aid the Dinobots in battling him, and Galvatron departed rather than fight his own future troops. Fallen Angel (issue) Shortly thereafter, Megatron returned from Cybertron with a case of amnesia, sparing Shockwave any retribution for his actions. Resurrection!

Not long afterwards, Optimus Prime perished in a video game duel with Megatron, but the Decepticon leader grew progressively more paranoid, fearing his foe had survived. Apparently attempting to shock Megatron back to his senses, Shockwave had the Predacons come to Earth and force him into a combat situation, implanting a copy of his personality program in the team so that he could "be part" of the battle from a safe distance. Events culminated in Megatron's apparent death when, having fully plunged into insanity, he blew the space bridge up while standing on it. Once again, Shockwave was leader. Gone but Not Forgotten!

Shockwave established regular contact with Cybertron Decepticon commander Ratbat, King of the Hill! and had the Seacons sent from Cybertron so that they could use their aquatic abilities to help fortify the Decepticons' new artificial mobile island base. It was while they were performing this task that Galvatron returned, advancing on the island, much to Shockwave's distress. He ordered the Seacons to attack, but Galvatron tore through both them and the base walls—he had, he claimed, come in peace, but Shockwave's attack had made an enemy of him, putting all Decepticons in danger. This of course, was a complete lie, but it turned the Decepticons against Shockwave, thereby disrupting the one-eyed warrior's command. Enemy Action!

After interfering in a scheme of Ratbat's, Buster Witwicky was captured by the Decepticons and brought to their island, which Shockwave then transformed into spaceship mode and took to the fringes of Earth's atmosphere. Autobot Headmaster leader Fortress Maximus pursued the craft and battled Shockwave in the void of space, where he defeated him and sent him tumbling back through Earth's atmosphere in free-fall. The Desert Island of Space! Although thought dead by many, Shockwave in actuality survived and returned to the Decepticons' original fortress base, where he concentrated on resolving the threat posed by Galvatron. Seeking to use the missing Megatron as a weapon against him, Shockwave had the small number of Decepticons still under his control recover a clone of the departed leader from the Thames river, which he and Snaptrap repaired and brainwashed using the psycho-probe. Salvage! Around the same time, Galvatron's fellow time-travelers Cyclonus and Scourge had joined up with Shockwave's Decepticons, but, chafing in his service, Cyclonus wound up accidentally blurting out that they would be responsible for killing him in the future of 2008. Seeking to preserve his continued existence, Shockwave unleashed the Megatron clone upon them, resulting in the death of Cyclonus. Satisfied with the clone's performance, he dispatched him against Galvatron. Dry Run! The battle had an unexpected conclusion, however, when "Megatron" found a kindred spirit in Galvatron and actually joined forces with him. Altered Image!

This unfortunate chain of events led to Shockwave losing his grip on sanity. Unable to logically fathom the situation, he slipped into despondency, stringing up the remains of Cyclonus on the walls of his castle as a twisted trophy. What Shockwave did not realize, however, was that the repeated time-travel and the death of Cyclonus had caused a rift in space-time that threatened the stability of reality. Hoping to restore the balance by returning all time-travelers to their proper place in time, Scourge attempted to reclaim Cyclonus's body, but was shot down by Shockwave for his trouble. At Scourge's urging, Ravage was able to present events logically enough to Shockwave to restore some semblance of coherency to his thoughts, and Shockwave himself deposited Cyclonus's remains in the rift, and sealed it with an x-ray blast. Time Wars

It would be some time before Shockwave next resurfaced, emerging from the sea on the coast of Blackpool, England, and killing a human who had seen him. Dark Creation Seeking to establish his own faction of Decepticons, he saved Starscream from Circuit Breaker The Human Factor!, and the pair, along with Ravage, recruited those who had grown disenfranchised with the leadership of the current Decepticon Earth commander, Scorponok. Eye of the Storm The small group staged an attack on Scorponok's New Jersey base, and Scorponok and Shockwave battled in the waters around Manhattan before being interrupted by the super-team, the Neo-Knights. ...All This and Civil War 2 Shockwave used the ensuing confusion to implicate the Autobots in an attack on the human team, but was later recognized by Circuit Breaker as the robot responsible for crippling her, and was blown out of the sky by her powers. Out of Time! Abruptly, the battle was ended when the Transformers were all teleported to Cybertron to face the threat of Unicron, but even Shockwave's data grid could not compute the vastness of the threat the chaos-bringer posed. On the Edge of Extinction!

After Unicron was destroyed, Shockwave teamed up with Starscream once more to find the remains of the Autobots' Ark, which had crashed during the battle. Still Life! The pair succeeded in getting the craft airborne again, but were unaware that the numerous damaged Transformers in the ship's stasis pods had been reactivated with nucleon—Megatron among them—and that an alternate future version of Galvatron was also on board. Exodus! Conflict erupted when Megatron and Galvatron met, but the sight of Shockwave saw the two Decepticons team up against him. To put an end to things once and for all, the revived Ratchet sent the Ark crashing to Earth. A Savage Circle There was no indication that Shockwave survived, suggesting that his evil had once and for all been put to rest.

Marvel UK future timelines
In the alternate future timeline of Earth-120185, Shockwave attacked the unveiling of the first female Autobot Arcee in 1995 with Fangry, Squeezeplay and Horri-Bull. When Arcee quickly disabled his men, though, Shockwave took off and left them to fend for themselves. Prime's Rib! Years later, in 2004, he staged an attack on the opening day of Autobot City, but was defeated by the extremely illogical actions of Hot Rod, who threw him down a mountain, and jumped along with him for the ride. Aspects of Evil!

After Decepticon commander Galvatron disappeared following Unicron's attack on Cybertron in 2006, the new Autobot leader Rodimus Prime devoted his forces to searching the galaxy and making sure the Decepticon was truly dead. This diverted attention allowed Shockwave to assume leadership of the Decepticons in the chaos that followed, and he consolidated them into a strong force on Cybertron that ultimately resulted in a stalemate between the factions by 2008. Wanted:Galvatron — Dead or Alive! Knowing that the freelance peacekeeping agent named Death's Head had a grudge against Rodimus Prime, Shockwave had Blot hire him for 10,000 shanix to hunt down and exterminate the Autobot, providing him with secret entry into Cybertron and information about Prime's movements. At the same time, Shockwave allowed Scourge and Cyclonus, Galvatron's former top two lackeys, to brazenly go after Rodimus Prime themselves. Seeing the powerful duo as a potential threat to his position, Shockwave hoped that by tossing these various parties into the mix together, at least some of his problems would turn out dead. Headhunt

Unfortunately for Shockwave's plans, it was then that Unicron's influence was felt again, as he mind-controlled Cyclonus, Scourge and Death's Head into trying to assassinate Shockwave. Death's Head used the supposedly deactivated bodies of the duo to gain access to Shockwave's audience chamber, and then left his "comrades" to seal the doors while he chased down the Decepticon leader. After a hard-fought battle, Shockwave was ultimately destroyed, his body blown to pieces and his memory module crushed between Death's Head's fingers, ensuring that he could never return. Still, the hunter was sickened by being forced to kill against his will, and Death's Head promised Shockwave's corpse that he would eventually avenge them both. The Legacy of Unicron!

Earthforce
earthforcefiction

Reality unfolds in many ways, across many dimensions. In one such dimension, it was not Scorponok that Shockwave challenged for leadership in the Decepticon Civil War, but a returning Megatron, and the two of them built their armies up for a renewed battle for control over the Earth. Upon hearing that Grimlock had somehow restored his Dinobots to life without the Creation Matrix, Shockwave and his soldiers attempted to force the secret out of the Dinobots. They failed, miserably. Two Steps Back!

Unable to gain an advantage over Megatron, Shockwave was forced to suggest an Enclave, a truce whereby the Decepticons could meet and hopefully overcome their differences as they had in the past, for the mutual goal of destruction of the Autobots. Certainly, the Autobots had something to say about that, and they rigged a scenario so that Megatron was tricked into thinking Shockwave had sent an assassin sniper to kill him during the meeting. A brawl broke out, and any chance at peace was chucked out the window, along with several dismembered body parts. The Bad Guy's Ball!

Thanks to a secret informer inside Megatron's camp, Shockwave was able to surprise his rival at the site of an energon delivery, and he and the Triple Changers overpowered Megatron and tossed him over a cliff, claiming his energon as their own. Secrets Turnabout's fair play, however, and Shockwave's own lieutenant Starscream tipped off Megatron about when Shockwave would be alone and open for attack. What's worse, Starscream and Soundwave took advantage of their leaders' absence to stage a coup, and so Shockwave and Megatron were left on the run from Earthforce while their troops abandoned them to their fates. Internal Affairs!

Shockwave and Megatron subsequently organized a hit on Starscream, using a series of cheap assassins to trick Starscream into assuming Soundwave wanted to wipe him out and assume sole command of the Decepticons. Assassins They then attacked their betrayers personally when it didn't go to plan, but were countered by the Earthforce, who needed Starscream alive to help heal Snarl, afflicted with Corrodia Gravis. Even with the help of Bludgeon's Mayhem Attack Squad, Megatron and Shockwave were forced to retreat. The Lesser Evil
Megatron decided to keep Shockwave alive in spite of past betrayals because of the use of his logical skills. However, he decided to prevent further betrayals by keeping him only as a head hooked to some sort of life support. Megatron queried him on information regarding Bug Bite and Shockwave told him all he knew, but when he requested computer access for more information, Megatron refused and closed up the chamber. Games of Deception
Shockwave was a highly ranked and staunchly loyal Decepticon, and with Soundwave, apparently one of the first at Megatron's side. War Dawn Certainly he was one of Megatron’s more favored troops, in that Megatron's constant praise of him seemed to annoy Starscream to no end. Starscream's Brigade

Shockwave was entrusted with the stewardship of Cybertron by Megatron when the latter left to intercept an Autobot mission surveying for new forms of energy. Neither Decepticon suspected that Megatron's absence (and Shockwave's command) would last four million years. Little changed on Cybertron during those years, although Shockwave apparently lost his left hand and replaced it with a laser cannon. More than Meets the Eye, Part 1

He oversaw all Decepticon activity on the evidently near-empty Cybertron. His keen scientific mind resulted in several incredible devices, including the space bridge. Although he was able to keep Cybertron functional for the extended length of time, he continued to try to contact Megatron in hopes of finding an energy source to revitalize the planet. In 1984, he finally reestablished contact with the Decepticon leader. The two coordinated the refinement of the space bridge, first to send energon cubes, and eventually as an easy method of transport for Decepticons. Transport to Oblivion Roll for It However, Autobots would also occasionally hijack use of the bridge, and Shockwave found himself having to repel stowaways on more than one occasion. Divide and Conquer

Eventually, Megatron and Shockwave developed a space bridge powerful enough to transport Cybertron itself to Earth. The Ultimate Doom, Part 1 The close proximity of the two worlds caused horrible weather disturbances that the Decepticons were able to utilize as sources of energy which could easily be shipped back to their homeworld. It was during this affair that Shockwave and his men had to stop an attempt by several Autobots and Spike Witwicky to rescue Spike's father, who was being held on Cybertron as a slave. The Autobots were eventually able to escape with both Sparkplug and the data for Doctor Arkeville’s mind-control hypno chips. The Ultimate Doom, Part 3

Even though he partook in the near-destruction of the Earth, he could also be credited with helping save it shortly after. With Megatron presumed dead following an explosion on his star cruiser, Starscream assumed command on Cybertron. He rigged Dr. Arkeville’s exponential generator to blow up the Earth so the Decepticons could harvest the release of energy. Despite Starscream’s orders, Shockwave continued to make communications to Earth, finally reaching Megatron, who wasn’t dead after all, and warning him in time to disable the generator. Countdown to Extinction (episode)
He once came to Earth, but only for a short time. The Autobot Run

When all the Earthbound Transformers began to malfunction due to the deterioration of the essential element Cybertonium in their bodies, Shockwave was tasked with having more mined from Cybertron to send to the Decepticons. The Autobots sent the Dinobots to attack the space bridge and snatch some Cybertonium for them. Instead, the rebellious Dinobots used the space bridge to travel to Cybertron, where they intended to stay. They were captured by Shockwave’s sentinels, rewired, and put to work in the Cybertonium mines. Spike and Carly were also captured when they attempted to rescue them, but Shockwave underestimated the two humans. Once they were put in the mines, Spike and Carly were able to fix Grimlock and the others. The Dinobots broke free and were able to escape Shockwave with enough Cybertonium to repair the Autobots. Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1 Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2

Though he'd believed them to be extinct, Shockwave discovered a small group of Female Autobots when they attempted to raid his energon stockroom. Although they got away with some supplies, he was able to track them to their hidden hideout. He alerted Megatron, who devised the plan of kidnapping their leader, Elita One. Megatron knew she had a relationship with Optimus Prime. Sure enough, after her capture, Optimus raced to Cybertron to rescue her, only to be captured himself by Starscream. Thanks to Elita’s special power, she and Optimus were able to escape. Meanwhile, Shockwave, Starscream, and the other Decepticons had to contend with Ironhide leading a small group of Autobots who had followed Optimus Prime. With the help of the Female Autobots team, they eventually cornered the Decepticons, until Shockwave blasted them off the bridge with his gun mode. He would’ve been able to finish them off had Prime and One not intervened at the last moment to save their comrades, send Starscream and the others running off, and blast Shockwave down into the pits of Cybertron. The Search for Alpha Trion

He wasn’t out of action for long. After Megatron built his new combiner team, the Stunticons, Shockwave helped locate the key to Vector Sigma, the computer that gave life to all Transformers. The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1 He later learned and reported to Megatron that the key had other unknown properties on other worlds, which Megatron discovered meant turning organic matter into metal. Unfortunately for Megatron, Silverbolt was able to score a precise shot, blowing apart the key before Megatron could get away with it. The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2

Another device built by Shockwave was the Kronosphere, a time machine that was used to dispose of the Aerialbots. When the Autobots were able to drive the Decepticons out of their hideout, Shockwave helped Megatron reactivate a fallen Guardian robot to try to take back the base. In the end, the Autobots were able to bring the Aerialbots back to the present, and with their help, drove the Decepticons away for good. War Dawn

Later, Shockwave alerted Megatron to the theft of five personality components from the Decepticon Detention Center on Cybertron. These were stolen by Starscream to build his own force to defeat Megatron, the Combaticons. Starscream's Brigade

This coup failed, and Starscream and the Combaticons were exiled to deep space. While Starscream went off on his own, the Combaticons instead made their way back to Cybertron, where they attacked Shockwave and his sentinels and succeeded in taking over Decepticon headquarters. Shockwave ran into Starscream, and the two teamed up to stop the Combaticons and their plan to use the space bridge to push the Earth into the Sun. However, Starscream saw an opportunity to assert power over Megatron, who was still on Earth. He turned against Shockwave, the two fought each other, and they were captured by the Combaticons.
By 2005, Megatron had returned to Cybertron and completely conquered the planet, leading Shockwave to rejoin Megatron's inner circle. He participated in the Battle of Autobot City and was present for both Starscream's coronation and his subsequent destruction by Galvatron, the reformatted version of Megatron. With Galvatron indisposed, Shockwave commanded the Decepticon forces during Unicron's attack on Cybertron and is believed to have been killed in the ensuing battle. The Transformers: The Movie

In 2004, as the battle for control of Cybertron was reaching fever pitch, Shockwave was among the casualities of war, his body destroyed but his personality component intact. Around this time, the time-tossed Decepticon Ravage took control of the Kronosphere, seeking to use it to alter the course of history. Ravage used the Kronosphere to teleport Megatron and the majority of the Decepticons outside of time, knowing that this would leave the Autobots to face the looming threat of Unicron alone. To keep the remaining Decepticons organized until then, Ravage realized they would need a leader, and Shockwave was elected for the task; his personality component implanted into a vehicle outfitted with molecular-manipulating Transmuter technology, Shockwave was reborn in a powerful Binaltech body and rallied the Decepticons under his command. Changing Lanes

Although they were forced off of Earth by the Autobots there, Shockwave's Decepticons continued to operate within the solar system, and were discovered in the vicinity of Saturn's rings by a Prowl. Alas, Prowl did not make it back to Earth after making his discovery: Shockwave led an attack on his shuttle and Prowl's spark was lost when he attempted to transfer it to safety through subspace. Prowl & Chase

Through the efforts of the mysterious time- and space-bending entity known as the Protector, the changes Ravage wrought upon the timeline were undone, and history was corrected. The altered version of the timeline, however, was also preserved as a parallel dimension (colloquially known as the "BT World"), and in that alternate dimension, the Autobots were successul in defeating Unicron alone. In accordance with Ravage's plan, however, Megatron and his forces then returned from beyond time, immediately launching a ferocious attack upon the weary Autobots.

The Autobots' total defeat was only delayed by Megatron's encounter with Nemesis Prime, an Earth-made robot which had taken the side of the Decepticons, who challenged Megatron during an attack on the Earth Defense Command base on Mars for ownership of Earth's solar system. While Megatron and Nemesis Prime battled, across the galaxy, Mirage ventured into the depths of Cybertron and activated the Quintessons' killswitch, deactivating all non-Binaltech Transformers throughout the universe. With Megatron deactivated right in front of him, Nemesis Prime declared himself Decepticon leader, and summoned Shockwave to his side, instructing him to gather up as many fallen Decepticon as he could before the humans' took possession of them. Shockwave hesitated momentarily, but quickly acquiesced to the logic of the plan and complied. Kill Switch
Shockwave grew frustrated with Galvatron's increasingly abusive leadership, and when he discovered the Zel Quartz, which could vastly boost the power of a Transformer, he implanted it into himself and staged a one-robot mutiny. Unfortunately, the power proved too much for Shockwave's systems and he ran wild. Neither the Autobots nor the Decepticons could stop him and they took massive casualties in the attempt. Shockwave eventually destroyed Cybertron, then set out on a quest to destroy all planets with life.

Elite teams of Autobots and Decepticons traveled to the past to prevent these events by either destroying or seizing the Zel Quartz years before Shockwave would find it. As a major player in the Decepticon army in Cybertron's past, Shockwave led the main attack on the Autobots' stronghold shortly after the appointment of Optimus Prime, and personally destroyed two guardian robots with one blast in space gun mode. The War Within

After Megatron's apparent death in an early space bridge test, the Decepticon faction splintered, with Air Commander Starscream creating the "Predacons" and High Auditor Ratbat the Ultracons, while Shockwave led the Decepticons through the Dark Ages of Cybertron. During this period, his logic allowed him to put aside differences with Jetfire and the Autobots in order to defeat the greater evil of The Fallen. Meeting up with Jetfire to discuss the upsurge in violence, the two were attacked by the Chaos Trinity, and Shockwave was taken down. Recovered by the newly built Trypticon, Shockwave organized a counter strike against the three mystics that included Trypticon, Soundwave, Ravage, the Insecticons, and the Seekers. Exactly how logic dictated that Shockwave bring an entire army to deal with three rogue Decepticons is unknown. Grimlock's Lightning Strike Coalition arrived, saying that they had a stake in this, and Shockwave agreed to a temporary ceasefire. After the Fallen was defeated, Shockwave and Prowl agreed to seal the Well of All Sparks with six coded barriers for each faction. They were to remain in place until Cybertron was united. Or, as Shockwave put it, until all are one. War Within: The Dark Ages As the Dark Ages came to an end, Shockwave was ready to sign a peace treaty with Ratbat's Ultracons and the Autobots, but the return of Megatron derailed the plan. Shockwave was tasked with reverse engineering the Quintesson-created clones he brought back to the planet with him, which suffered difficulties due to Megatron's refusal to divulge their origin, but greatly intrigued Shockwave. War Within: The Age of Wrath

Shockwave was left behind on Cybertron while Megatron's forces pursued Optimus Prime and were subsequently lost on Earth for four million years, and became Decepticon leader on the planet. He began experimenting with cloning, and through studies of Astrotrain and Blitzwing, began to conceive the idea of a Transformer with multiple alternate modes. Cybertron, however, was steadily growing lower and lower on energy, and in an attempt to create new energy-conservative Transformers, Shockwave allied with the Autobots for a pooling of resources that created the Micromasters. Destined for Nothing This came back to bite him, however, when the Decepticon Micromaster Skystalker attempted to overthrow his command, knocking him offline and decapitating him to use in a grotesque puppet show, giving orders to the other Decepticons by holding Shockwave's severed noggin up to a video screen. Victims of the Revolution When Skystalker was defeated, Shockwave was repaired, but eventually, he and all the other Transformers on Cybertron succumbed to stasis as the planet's energy ran out, and it entered a hibernation phase known as the "Great Shutdown."
Using that knowledge, Shockwave steadily worked to restore Cybertron, reactivating its population and solving their energy needs, ending the war and unifying the planet. He also continued his experiments into multiple transformations, yielding the unstable Duocons, and then successfully mastering the process with Triple Changers. In the absence of Megatron, Shockwave had assumed command of the Decepticons on Cybertron, and had successfully driven the Autobots into an underground resistance movement. When a number of [[G.I. Joe (team)|G.I. The same wormhole malfunction blasted a number of Transformers off of Cybertron and into random points of Earth's past, a temporal anomaly that threatened to scour the Earth's face with fire if the Transformers were not brought back.
Ultra Magnus and Perceptor arrived and were able to hold off the Decepticons for a time with a force field, while teams of humans were time-ported away to retrieve the missing Transformers and end the anomaly. {{storylink|G.I. Revealing that he had intended all along for the humans to discover the wormhole gate technology, Shockwave set the gate to continue operating but blocked the last remaining group from returning—thus condemning Earth to destruction, easy pickings for conquest. {{storylink|G.I. Long before the war, Shockwave was an understudy of some sort for the mad scientist Jhiaxus. Spotlight: Doubledealer

Six hundred thousand meta-cycles ago, he had become a Decepticon scientist. He predicted the eventual destruction of Cybertron as a result of the Great War, driving the combatants out across the galaxy. Knowing that control of resources in this period would be crucial, Shockwave decided to create his own secret network of energon sources on scattered planets, a tool he could use to ensure his own domination. Calling the project "Regenesis", Shockwave covertly launched rockets from Cybertron to several worlds with specific geological properties. The rockets contained a distilled form of energon that would act as a catalyst in their target planets, sparking chain reactions that, if properly regulated, would create seams of an extremely potent energon ore. One of these planets was Earth, and after a long period (possibly millions of years), the energon reaction reached a critical point. Shockwave needed to plant global dampers to prevent the reaction from spiraling out of control, so he traveled to Earth and found it at the end of its most recent ice age. As he went about his business, he was unaware of a threat that had shadowed him.

Before departing Cybertron, Shockwave had been dispatched to "tidy up" after an energon raid by the Dynobots, following the team of misfits back to Autobot territory and blowing up their stolen fuel. The Dynobots had vowed revenge, and after their explosion-inflicted injuries had been repaired, they tracked Shockwave to Earth. While Shockwave was busy on the planet, the Dynobots either destroyed or disabled his ship and then altered their own bodies to withstand the energon-rich atmosphere.
As Shockwave finished planting the dampers and was preparing to visit other Regenesis worlds, the Dynobots teleported upon him. The attack threw Shockwave off-kilter with both its ferocity and its unexpectedness, as he had anticipated a stab in the back from Megatron but had failed to consider the simple vengeance of the Dynobots. Mentally and physically confounded by the assault, Shockwave deactivated his higher reasoning and allowed a subroutine simulating rage to take over. This brutal, violent Shockwave decimated the Dynobots, burning off the organic coating shielding them from the planet's high energon fields and forcing them into stasis lock. As the battle concluded, Shockwave restored his full neural operations and logged the emotional experience for further study. But, as his logic center churned away once more, it again failed to anticipate his enemies' chaotic nature. Specifically, Grimlock had set a dead-man's switch on the Dynobots' ship, and before Shockwave could act upon his own victory, the ship shot an energy beam into a nearby volcano, causing it to erupt and consume all of the combatants.

Megatron became suspicious of Shockwave's absence and assigned Bludgeon to search through Shockwave's files. Spotlight: Shockwave Bludgeon discovered the Regenesis project but kept the information to himself and his close-knit team. Some time after the Thunderwing catastrophe but before Cybertron had been declared off-limits, Bludgeon's team set upon the goal of bringing Thunderwing back to life using Shockwave's seeded Ultra-Energon. To this end, they covertly restored Shockwave's old subterranean laboratory and recovered Thunderwing's body, staying on Cybertron long after the planet was officially evacuated and quarantined. After lengthy preparations, the group headed to Earth and became the first beneficiaries of Shockwave's labor, harvesting all the energon ore they needed in a base inside Mount St. Helens. They were briefly interrupted in the year 1984 by Soundwave, who had been spying on them all along and sought to both secure the ore for himself and prevent Thunderwing's return. But Bludgeon's swordsmanship made short work of Soundwave's cassettes Ravage and Laserbeak, and Iguanus took Soundwave down with a weapon from Shockwave's lab, an energy gun that forced Soundwave into his alt-mode and locked him in that form. As Bludgeon's group left with their bounty, they induced a volcanic eruption, burying their opponents. Spotlight: Soundwave A little over twenty years later, Bludgeon finally completed his task and resurrected Thunderwing. Stormbringer issue 2

Coindentally, around the same time (2006, to be precise), a human archaeological team uncovered Shockwave's body. Spotlight: Shockwave As the dig continued and the Dynobots also began to be unearthed, a government organization swept in and took the operation over. Escalation issue 5 This organization, Skywatch, had also recovered Ravage and Laserbeak back in 1985. Spotlight: Soundwave

Skywatch repaired and attempted to control their captives through neural inhibitors, but the results were consistently disastrous. As the Dynobots and cassettes wreaked havoc (due to the Machination's interference) or otherwise pursued unknown agendas (due to Soundwave's interference), Skywatch commander Joshua Red decided to use a less sophisticated method on their last remaining subject. Bringing Shockwave online in their Salt Lake City base, Red told him there was a bomb in his head set to detonate in 24 hours if Skywatch didn't transmit a reset code. Shockwave's task was to take down the rogue Transformers in that time. Shockwave casually asked if they knew how much damage he could do in 24 hours, then he made a beeline for Soundwave, who was active but still mode-locked in a Portland, Oregon child's possession. Maximum Dinobots issue 3

At the same time, Soundwave was using his broadcast abilities to block Skywatch's control over Ravage and Laserbeak, who retrieved Soundwave from his human captivity. The three returned to Mt. St. Helens, where Shockwave joined them and struck a deal. Maximum Dinobots issue 4 Deducing that his own weapon had mode-locked Soundwave, Shockwave offered to undo its effects, but only after they helped him thwart Skywatch's threat to himself. They agreed, and the first step of the plan was for the cassettes to help Shockwave feign obedience to Skywatch. Shockwave told Skywatch where to find the cassettes, and indeed Ravage and Laserbeak allowed themselves to be recaptured without a fight.

Meanwhile, Shockwave played out his own part by seeking the Dynobots. But he found them already engaged with Scorponok and the Machination, whom Shockwave decided to attack first so he could destroy the Dynobots himself. Observing the battle, Joshua Red ordered the explosives detonated only if Shockwave succeeded, since it would guarantee a "clean sweep" of all the combatants and their bodies. If Shockwave was still in battle when the 24 hours were up, Red wanted the reset code sent instead, presumably because he feared anyone but Shockwave walking away alive and unsubdued. It is unclear if Shockwave had deduced this, but his actions produced the effect he desired. By the time Shockwave beat Scorponok, only 12 minutes remained, and Grimlock proved to have more than 12 minutes' worth of fight left in him. On the 30-second mark, the two were still grappling in a Machination arms bunker, so Red ordered the reset code sent. The code was intercepted and decrypted by Soundwave, who transmitted the information to Shockwave, who in return sent him instructions to mentally disable the mode-lock. Soundwave transformed, his cassettes attacked their would-be captors, and Shockwave abruptly walked away from his fight, declaring an end to the "charade." But Grimlock would not be denied his revenge, so before Shockwave could leave, he detonated a grenade that blew the arms bunker sky-high. The two were soon recovered, still functioning, by Ultra Magnus, who took both Shockwave and Scorponok into custody. Maximum Dinobots issue 5
During Shockwave's time in Skywatch captivity, the researchers had gathered enough information about him to design a weapon based on his technology. According to Cmdr. Spike Witwicky, the first working prototypes were the size of a house, but with some unspecified "outside help," they were able to condense it to a size small enough for hand-held use by a human. It was stored in a secret New York City facility, and when the city was overrun by Megatron's forces, Spike was sent in with a military squad to retrieve it and use it to kill Megatron. All Hail Megatron issue 9 Though his team perished, Spike survived, got the weapon, and successfully shot Megatron in the head, ending the Decepticon occupation. All Hail Megatron issue 12

Later, Jetfire reflected on an event he called "Shockwave's resurgence." It is unclear exactly what this was or when this happened. Spotlight: Sideswipe

IDW Hearts of Steel comics
After awakening in 19th century America, Shockwave took on the form of an ironclad warship and recruited inventor Tobias Muldoon to the Decepticon side (by pretending to be a friend to humanity). Hearts of Steel issue 1 He took Muldoon to his Decepticon comrades underwater, where he was questioned by Starscream. Hearts of Steel issue 2 As a huge ship, he did not participate in the Astrotrain's attempted attack on New York, and thus may have survived the story unharmed. * Although Shockwave was depicted in the very first episode of the original cartoon series, he did not receive a toy release until early in 1985. Unlike the bulk of early Transformers that drew their molds from Takara's Diaclone and Microchange toys, Shockwave's original form was first produced by ToyCo as the "4 Changeable Astro Magnum". As such, similar non-Transformer toys using the same mold were released in 1985, including a RadioShack exclusive called "Galactic Man". A minor but amusing difference between the Radio Shack version, humorously called "Shackwave" by fans, and the Hasbro version, is that Shockwave's inconveniently placed trigger was remolded and appears less... inconvenient.
* The Astro Magnum mold also appears to have been licensed to a small company called Village Toys in the 1980s, where it showed up in their Convert-A-Bots line under the name "N-4-SR". This release was dark grey, with purple highlights.

* A Cybertronian battle scene in TV Magazine (reprinted in Transformers Generations and Transformers Visualworks) depicts Shockwave not in purple, but in the original grey color scheme of the Astro Magnum/Galactic Man toy.
* Shockwave has been periodically drawn with two hands in various media. He first shows up this way in More than Meets the Eye, Part 1, and the condition briefly reappears in Divide and Conquer. He also wound up this way on the cover of G.I. Joe and the Transformers #3.
* Voice actor Corey Burton based Shockwave's voice on that of actor David Warner, specifically his role as evil computer thingy Sark in Tron. Burton even provided the voice of Sark in the video game Kingdom Hearts II.
* In contrast to Megatron, when Shockwave transforms, he does not change size. He can also fly, aim, and fire himself in gun mode. Combiners are large enough to wield him. The Revenge of Bruticus

* In the Japanese dub of the Generation 1 cartoon, Shockwave's personality was altered from the American interpretation—he was presented like a grizzled old man with a loud, raspy voice and a very short temper.
* One of the earliest pictured versions of Action Master Shockwave features some awkward proportions and Fistfight with reversed colors. Another oddity of this version is that Shockwave's right hand is sculpted in an open position.
* A silhouette of Action Master Shockwave's card art appears on the back of the G.I. Joe Star Brigade packaging... as Hawk!
* Shockwave is, of course, the basis for the Energon Decepticon homage character Shockblast.
* A company named Lanard Toys held the "Shockwave" trademark in the "toys" field for several years. For that reason, the Energon toy/character mentioned above was given the substitute name "Shockblast". The same name was later given to the Alternators version of G1 Shockwave for the same reason. However, by that point Lanard had abandoned their "Shockwave" trademark, making it available to Hasbro again. Unfortunately, the packaging for Alternators Shockwave had already been printed by that point, so Hasbro decided to go with the substitute name. They then slapped the name "Shockwave" onto the next available Mini-Con just so they could reclaim the trademark. Subsequently, all new toys of the G1 Shockwave character, as well as homage characters, were released under the name "Shockwave" again. (Ironically, Hasbro later used the name "Shockblast" for new toys of a G.I.Joe character originally also named "Shockwave", possibly in order to avoid brand confusion; apparently, Hasbro view the name "Shockwave" as more iconic for the Transformers character than his G.I. Joe namesake.)
* Shockwave bears the rather strange distinction of receiving a number of particularly high quality knockoffs, all of which known retain the electronics and some even having odd Flash Gordonesque retools.
:Tantrum is a Decepticon Predacon from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Tantrum is loads of fun. He's all violence and no patience. Give him a can of Kremzeek™ energy drink with the tab pulled off, and he'll quickly devolve through frustration to crazed screaming to smashing the recalcitrant can to a splattered soup of oily drink and metal shavings. Such outbursts are common, and they usually end with a pile of smoking rubble, and Tantrum in the middle, with a happy, smiling face, the calmest and coolest of Decepticons, for a very short while, until next time the fit takes him.

The Decepticon command, in their infinite wisdom, have augmented the swordfighting, electrostatic-discharging, and fuel-carrying abilities of this walking Internet with a catalytic carbine rifle. This can be good for a lot of laughs when it converts the metal in a target to enjoyably dangerous isotopes for Blot to snack on and Mixmaster to play with.

Tantrum and his fellow Predacons can combine to form Predaking.

As Megatron's paranoia reached its peak, Soundwave suggested that they enlist the help of the Predacons to flush out Optimus Prime, allowing Megatron to finally defeat him. However, Shockwave called them from Cybertron, and gave the Predacon leader Razorclaw secret orders to turn on Megatron at a crucial moment. The Predacons successfully hunted down Optimus, and when Megatron arrived, as Shockwave ordered, they turned on him. After learning of Shockwave and the Predacons' betrayal, Megatron summoned a space bridge to Cybertron to escape, but Prime flung them both through the bridge before it had fully materialized. Prey! The Harder They Die!

Fortunately for Tantrum and the other Predacons, Megatron lost his memory of this incident when Straxus attempted to take over his body. Then Shockwave hired them to kill Megatron again. Megatron humiliated them. Resurrection! Gone but Not Forgotten!
The Predacons acted like Tantrum in their laughable attack on the Throttlebots in a shopping mall. Tantrum would later get torn in half by Scorponok, and bossed around by Scorponok and Grimlock, before he and the other Predacons were wiped out by Starscream's Underbase powers in Tokyo. =====Earthforce=====
earthforcefiction

Tantrum was probably a member of Shockwave's faction on Earth, like his fellow Predacons, although this isn't entirely clear. When the Enclave broke out into total carnage due to an Autobot trick, Tantrum was right in the thick of it, probably enjoying every moment of chaos. The Bad Guy's Ball! He later joined Soundwave and the Decepticons in attacking the Autobot Earthbase. Divide and Conquer!

Generation 2
One day, Tantrum was having some harmless fun slaughtering humans and causing massive property damage.

That killjoy Optimus Prime ran full-tilt into him in truck mode, blowing Tantrum into scattered chunks. Some people can't take a joke. The Gathering Darkness
:Voice actors: Philip L. Clarke (English), ? (Japanese)

Tantrum and the Predacons were created during an alliance between the Decepticons and Quintessons. They were sent to Io to stop Blurr and Wheelie from recovering Metroplex's transformation cog, leaving the Autobot city helpless against the coming attack of Trypticon. Tantrum charged Wheelie like the bull he resembles, but the nimble Autobot leapt out of the way and Tantrum crashed into Rampage instead. The battle was kicked up a notch when the Predacons combined into Predaking and had their first fight with Sky Lynx. Tantrum was sure they'd obliterate him, but after they got knocked into separate components again, Razorclaw began to retreat and Tantrum was forced to flee as well. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5

On the planet Dread, the Predacons were overseeing construction of a massive cannon which would allow Galvatron to destroy Cybertron with a huge blast of death crystals. An Autobot strike team landed on the planet while the Preds were patrolling, and the Decepticons engaged the scouts, Kup and Blurr. While Razorclaw and Rampage kept Kup busy, Tantrum and Headstrong rammed Blurr into quickmud, and watched him sink. He would've been obliterated, but Sky Lynx came looking for his Auto-buddies and pulled the motormouth free. The cocky Tantrum was sure they'd obliterate Sky Lynx, but his delusions of adequacy were quickly shattered as the Predacons were forced into a retreat. Chaos (episode)

During an attack on Rodimus Prime on Cybertron, Tantrum and the Predacons became the unwilling subjects of a Quintesson reality-altering effect, where a dream machine was turning Daniel Witwicky's nightmares into tangible threats and screwing up the environment. After Razorclaw and Springer were hauled off by a flying dragon, Rodimus Prime suggested a cease fire so that the Autobots and Predacons could work together and find their friends. Tantrum made a counter-offer, and suggested he wouldn't obliterate the Autobots right that moment if they stayed out of his way. He did manage to blow up a giant plant with the electro-blasts from his horns, so maybe Tantrum didn't need help after all. Nightmare Planet
Tantrum and the Predacons were part of Galvatron's strike force on Cybertron in 2011, seeking to wrest control of Vector Sigma from the Autobots. While invading Cybertron, Tantrum happened across an unguarded Daniel. Never one to pass up an opportunity to maul a small child, Tantrum immediately attacked.
Later, the Predacons traveled to Earth in order to stymie Hot Rod's attempt to locate the Matrix of Leadership. Tantrum's unit found the former Autobot leader in the Arctic, but were held off by Blaster, his Mini-Cassettes, and Superion. The Mystery of Planet Master Tantrum and the Predacons were among the Decepticons Galvatron brought with him to the planet Beast, although they were absent during the Autobot attack that drove the Decepticons off. Rebellion on Planet Beast

When the Autobots created a new kind of metal on Cybertron called Cybertonuron, Galvatron wanted to claim it for himself. He sent Tantrum and the Predacons to Cybertron as an advance guard to pave the way for his forces. They mowed down Cybertron's standing guardians and began to wreak havoc on the planet. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1 Once the Autobots arrived from Earth, the Predacons were confronted by Shōki and the Trainbots. Their attempts to intimidate the Light-Speed Commander failed utterly, and a fight broke out. Tantrum ended up knocking himself unconscious colliding with Razorclaw when Getsuei and Suiken lept away from his ferocious charge. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1 Tantrum and the Predacons assembled as Predaking to help Scourge and Cyclonus steal the Solar 1 satellite, but they were driven off by Raiden and the Headmasters. The Shadow Emperor, Scorponok Next, Tantrum and the Predacons helped Scorponok stage a crisis to keep the Autobots distracted, by setting off a volcano in Peru. On-scene to keep the Autobots from rescuing innocent villagers, Tantrum's group first clashed with the Trainbots before joining forces as Predaking and once again fighting Raiden and the Headmasters. The Dormant Volcano Mysteriously Erupts

As Scorponok began his plan to capture the plasma energy of Mars by blowing it up, Tantrum and the Predacons stood guard on Mars as the Terrorcons began planting the necessary bombs. When the Trainbots stumbled across the plot, the Predacons started up a firefight to dispose of the meddling Autobots. With Daniel Witwicky and Wheelie missing, the Trainbots tagged out with the Autobot Headmasters to go looking for them. Razorclaw gave the order and Predaking was formed. Unfortunately, even Predaking was no match for Transtector power, and he was felled by a quadruple jump kick by the Headmasters. Explosion on Mars!! Maximus Is in Danger Regrouping on Chaar, Tantrum and the Predacons bore witness to the unveiling on MegaZarak, Scorponok's new super weapon Transtector. Explosion on Mars!! MegaZarak Appears

Tantrum and the Predacons attended Scorponok's ceremony on the moon. They were scattered by the Autobot attack, but rallied around Galvatron's late arrival and drove off their heroic opponents. Return of the Immortal Emperor

As Scorponok abandoned Earth in favor of conquering Master, Tantrum was one of his many troops seen attacking the planet's fortifications. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2) He also helped retrofit the Zarak Shield out of indestructible G-Metal so that it could stand up to the Master Sword. The Zarak Shield Turns the Tide
Dreamwave comics continuity
Tantrum and the Predacons were only ever identified as long lost "warlords" who had apparently been exiled from Cybertron in the distant past. It was not made clear if they were particularly warlike Decepticons, or had been warriors who actually predated Megatron's rise to power. Whatever the case, they had ended up on the planet Beest and, by modern times, had descended into feral beast modes, operating purely on animal instinct. Welcome to the Jungle

Megatron, who was similarly in exile at the time, challenged their leader Razorclaw and defeated him in battle. He then reprogrammed the Predacons to be loyal only to him, and gave them the combiner form of Predaking. Tantrum and the others then helped Megatron resume control over the Decepticons, ousting Shockwave and Starscream from command of their respective splinter armies. Lost and Found (issue) The Route of All Evil
Devil's Due G.I.Joe Vs. Transformers continuity
Tantrum and his Predacon comrades attacked Nautilator when he dared to intrude on the Predacons' piece of the Gladiator Zone, but Nautilator fetched his own friends and formed Piranacon, prompting the Predacons to combine as well. Predaking eventually defeated Piranacon, but before he could delivered the killing blow, he was frozen in place by Serpent O.R., who convinced Tantrum and the others to join his new Decepticon army. The Art of War issue 2

When a group of Autobots and G.I. Joes came hunting after Serpent O.R., Predaking stomped on Bumblebee with his Tantrum leg. During a Decepticon gathering later on, Divebomb got into a fight with Hun-Grrr and tried to gaud Tantrum into attacking the Terrorcon by claiming Hun-Grrr called him "slow on the upload". Oddly enough, Headstrong was the one to take offense to this. As Predaking, the Predacons then participated in an attack on an Autobot peace ceremony. The Art of War issue 3 Tantrum was later seen among the Decepticon forces preparing to defend their base from a major Autobot/G.I. Joe assault. The Art of War issue 4
Tantrum fought for Megatron in the illegal gladiatorial deathmatches held in the Forge. He and the future Predacons also became some of the first Decepticons, turning the fighting towards the public and launching an insurrection in Kaon against the Senate, under Megatron's command. Megatron Origin

After the first defeat of Thunderwing in a cataclysm during the war that followed, Tantrum and the other Predacons led the attack against the beleaguered Autobot positions soon after the Autobot morale-booster Blaster was taken out by his assassin. Spotlight: Blaster
In modern times, he served with the rest of the Predacons aboard the Thanatos, and joined Headstrong in leading a ground envoy onto Cybertron's surface to help the Wreckers battle the resurrected Thunderwing. Their aid helped turn the tide, so Razorclaw didn't have to use the ship's starblitz torpedoes to obliterate the entire planet. That makes the Predacons heroes! (Say that again, though, and Tantrum will make sure you get obliterated.) Stormbringer issue 4
