Considering the Dinobots' reputations as brainless brutes, Volcanicus is similarly a mindless beast as a result, but given how it hasn't stopped the Dinobots before, it's not much of a problem.

The Dinobots attacked [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] and his team in [[Primal Swamp]], believing the Decepticon leader to be behind the recent apocalyptic threat. When all five were forced to the ground, the Dinobots formed Volcanicus to turn the tide of the battle. {{storylink|The Swamp}} He tussled with the others for a while, being pretty much untouchable, until he was knocked off guard by a surprise attack from the arriving [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]]. {{storylink|Volcanicus (episode)|Volcanicus}} He quickly recovered from this and began chasing Predaking, who himself was chasing the others. They both finally stopped their assault as they witnessed Megatron enter a mysterious dome. {{storylink|Without Warning}} As they waited for Megatron to re-emerge, he started another fight with Predaking, but was knocked to the ground and got stuck in an energon pool. When the [[Quintesson]]s escaped their dimensional prison, they arrived on [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]] in the year [[2050]], where they spotted and hoped to subdue the Dinobots to use as merchandise. Towards this goal, they summoned [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]], who had the Dinobots on the ropes till Grimlock was encouraged by telepathic messages from the [[Primus|Oracle]] of the past universe to use [[Earth]]'s [[Angolmois Energy]] to manifest his heart's strength in reality. With this energy and the lending of an [[Energon Matrix]] from [[Kakuryu (G1)|Grimmaster]], Grimlock and the other four original Dinobots combined into the mighty Volcanicus. Predaking attempted to use [[Slash (POTP)|Slash]] as a hostage, but the [[Magma Blade (GS)|Magma Blade]]s-armed Volcanicus was nevertheless able to slash Predaking apart into his [[Predacon (G1)|Predacon]] components, who quickly retreated, and save his "little sister". Soon after, Volcanicus was contacted by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Spike Witwicky]] about the [[Selector]] revolt at [[Neo Scramble City]], so Volcanicus's components split up to go and assist their allies. {{storylink|Volcanicus comic 1}}

The Dinobots aided the humans against the [[Cybertron Alliance]] and Selectors because of their loyalty to Carly. The [[Technobot (G1)|Technobot]]s were also loyal to their father, Grimlock, and merged with him as a variant of Volcanicus called [[Volcaticon]]. The Quintessons intervened on the battle with anti-Transformer gas, and so Volcaticon deconstructed so that Grimlock could reform Volcanicus with the Dinobots while the Technobots assembled separately as [[Computron (G1)|Computron]]. {{Storylink|Volcanicus comic 2}}

Volcanicus and Computron soon realized they were at a disadvantage against the arriving [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcon]]s, though. Computron had restored Grimlock's super-intelligence when they merged as Volcaticon, and now lacked the accumulated knowledge necessary to feed his analytics. Meanwhile, the hyper-intelligent Grimlock inside Volcanicus lost his animal ferocity in this "improved" state. {{Storylink|Abominus comic 1}} Given a reprieve, Computron reabsorbed his intelligence from Volcanicus before engaging the Terrorcons' combiner, [[Abominus (G1)|Abominus]], but to no avail. [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] infused himself with Angolmois Energy to counter Abominus, only to be driven out of control himself. Volcanicus used the Angolmois in his Magma Blade to deflect the reformatted Megatron Omega's attack, teaming up with Abominus against him. Volcanicus and Abominus could not prevail, but soon a wormhole opened in space, drawing the Primitive warriors back into the past. {{Storylink|Abominus comic 2}}

Volcanicus and the Dinobots were used as pawns by Primus, knowing they could be easily directed against their old enemy and his rival, [[Primacron]]. Grimlock assembled Volcanicus to fight Neo Primus, the transformed [[Blue Planet (GS)|Blue Planet]] and the first planet-sized robot Primacron created. {{Storylink|Generations Selects Special Comic Finale Prelude|Finale Prelude}} Even Volcanicus could not defeat a planet alone, but [[Hun-Gurrr (G1)|Hun-Gurrr]] and the Terrorcons had followed through the wormhole and chowed down on the Angolmois inside the Blue Planet. Hun-Gurr caught the Magma Blade when Volcanicus was disarmed and charged it with the energy inside him, returning it as the Angolmois Blade. Grimlock wanted to form his combined form almost immediately, so he got help from Jetfire to open the Enigma vault and got his hands on the Enigma. But Swoop noticed a cerebro-shell in the back of Jetfire's head! Trying to form Volcanicus, Grimlock ordered the Dinobots to combine, but nothing happened. As it turned out, the Dinobots didn't know ''how'' to work the Enigma. Soon, Bruticus and Superion arrived on the scene, and the two duked it out while Grimlock desperately tried to figure out how to use the Enigma.

Learning of the Dinobots' actions, Optimus activated the Enigma, creating Volcanicus and Predaking in the process! Springer retrieved the Enigma, but the Dinobots and Predacons had unfinished business, so they settled on finishing the score later, in their new combined forms.

When the [[Quintesson]]s escaped their dimensional prison, they arrived on [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]] in the year [[2050]], where they spotted and hoped to subdue the Dinobots to use as merchandise. Towards this goal, they summoned [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]], who had the Dinobots on the ropes till Grimlock was encouraged by telepathic messages from the [[Primus|Oracle]] of the past universe to use [[Earth]]'s [[Angolmois Energy]] to manifest his heart's strength in reality. With this energy and the lending of an [[Energon Matrix]] from [[Kakuryu (G1)|Grimmaster]], Grimlock and the other four original Dinobots combined into the mighty Volcanicus. Predaking attempted to use [[Slash (POTP)|Slash]] as a hostage, but the [[Magma Blade (GS)|Magma Blade]]s-armed Volcanicus was nevertheless able to slash Predaking apart into his [[Predacon (G1)|Predacon]] components, who quickly retreated, and save his "little sister". Soon after, Volcanicus was contacted by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Spike Witwicky]] about the [[Selector]] revolt at [[Neo Scramble City]], so Volcanicus's components split up to go and assist their allies. {{storylink|Volcanicus comic 1}}

The Dinobots aided the humans against the [[Cybertron Alliance]] and Selectors because of their loyalty to Carly. The [[Technobot (G1)|Technobot]]s were also loyal to their father, Grimlock, and merged with him as a variant of Volcanicus called [[Volcaticon]]. The Quintessons intervened on the battle with anti-Transformer gas, and so Volcaticon deconstructed so that Grimlock could reform Volcanicus with the Dinobots while the Technobots assembled separately as [[Computron (G1)|Computron]]. {{Storylink|Volcanicus comic 2}}

Volcanicus and Computron soon realized they were at a disadvantage against the arriving [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcon]]s, though. Computron had restored Grimlock's super-intelligence when they merged as Volcaticon, and now lacked the accumulated knowledge necessary to feed his analytics. Meanwhile, the hyper-intelligent Grimlock inside Volcanicus lost his animal ferocity in this "improved" state. {{Storylink|Abominus comic 1}} Given a reprieve, Computron reabsorbed his intelligence from Volcanicus before engaging the Terrorcons' combiner, [[Abominus (G1)|Abominus]], but to no avail. [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] infused himself with Angolmois Energy to counter Abominus, only to be driven out of control himself. Volcanicus used the Angolmois in his Magma Blade to deflect the reformatted Megatron Omega's attack, teaming up with Abominus against him. Volcanicus and the Dinobots were used as pawns by Primus, knowing they could be easily directed against their old enemy and his rival, [[Primacron]]. As it turned out, the Dinobots didn't know ''how'' to work the Enigma. Soon, Bruticus and Superion arrived on the scene, and the two duked it out while Grimlock desperately tried to figure out how to use the Enigma.

Learning of the Dinobots' actions, Optimus activated the Enigma, creating Volcanicus and Predaking in the process! Springer retrieved the Enigma, but the Dinobots and Predacons had unfinished business, so they settled on finishing the score later, in their new combined forms.

When you encounter '''Skullgrin''', just ''who'' you're meeting depends largely on what he happens to be wearing at the time. The Cybertronian robot at his core is intelligent, logical, coldblooded, and vain. He tends to put his own interests above the Decepticon cause and is easily distracted from missions and even direct combat should something of interest catch his optic. He finds Earth in particular quite interesting and is eager (in a decadent and mercenary way) to learn what it has to offer him.

Should you meet Skullgrin inside his Pretender shell, however, you'll find yourself facing a whole different beast. When he's encased in its monstrous hide, a new personality takes over: he becomes a snorting, snarling, sinister sick-o. Low on brains but brimming over with boundless, unstoppable rage, this Skullgrin is the kind of warrior you just point in a certain direction and let fly. Mindless destruction is his favorite pastime, and he won't stop snarling and fighting until everything before him has fallen.

The disconnect between these two personas can lead to some rather erratic behaviour on his part. The two disparate personalities attempting to reconcile themselves within him can make who and what Skullgrin is like on any given day a toss-up, and should the coin come down wrong, a potentially deadly one for anyone nearby.

After commandeering a genetics research lab on Earth, [[Scorponok (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Scorponok]] was able to create the science of Pretender shells using synthoplasmic chambers constructed by himself and [[Vorath]]. Skullgrin was one of six Decepticon volunteers transformed by the process into Pretenders. But soon after the process was completed, the Decepticons took notice of a digital eavesdropper. After tracing the intruder to [[Alternate Reality, Inc.]], Scorponok sent out his newly recreated troops to test their might against the spies. But, having gained access to the Pretender process themselves, the Autobots were able to manufacture heroic counterparts to Scorponok's goons. A digital copy of [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] proved to be a superior tactician against the Decepticons, tipping the odds in the Autobots' favor. Skullgrin was sent to Earth alone by Scorponok to construct a fuel depot in secret for his Decepticon comrades, the belief being that his organic shell would arouse less suspicion than a normal Decepticon would due to the increasing public hostility towards giant alien robots, fanned by the [[Z Foundation]]. Skullgrin caught the attention of [[Rollie Friendly (G1)|Rollie Friendly]] after [[Bigfoot]]-style sightings of him in [[North Carolina]] appeared in the gutter press, and the film director offered him a movie role. The Pretender agreed in exchange for being paid in fuel. When the public and press went wild over him, Skullgrin began to like being a movie star. But while his Pretender shell had fooled most people, robot hunter [[Circuit Breaker (G1)|Circuit Breaker]] suspected his origins. When Skullgrin revealed his true form to the movie's [[Carissa Carr (G1)|leading lady]], the robophobic Circuit Breaker attacked and destroyed both the film and his movie career. {{storylink|Monstercon from Mars!}}

Distrust between the two leaders led to an all-out battle between the two groups, till they realized that [[Starscream (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Starscream]] had manipulated them both to battle while he made his escape to acquire the [[Underbase]]. {{storylink|Cold War!}} Both Decepticon camps united, only to be once more distracted when they detected the Autobots approaching their location. Skullgrin and his teammates were ordered by Scorponok to "crush every [[spark]] from their bodies." This too was realized to have been a ruse by Starscream, and the Autobots formed a temporary alliance with the Decepticons to go after him. After Starscream gained the power of the Underbase, Skullgrin was part of a wave with the other Decepticon Pretenders and the Predacons that tried to take down Starscream. Following the destruction of their mobile starship headquarters, the Decepticons established a new base hidden under the [[New Jersey (Earth)|New Jersey]] dumps. Shortly thereafter, Iguanus was chosen by Scorponok to spearhead a new energy-collecting endeavor with his fellow Pretenders. When Skullgrin expressed displeasure at being left with guard duty while the other Pretenders had more exciting roles, Iguanus taunted that it was because movie stardom had made him a softhearted fleshling-lover. When Iguanus captured [[Cecilia Santiago|a human]] snooping near the base, Skullgrin attempted to convince his fellow Pretender not to immediately terminate her. This resulted in a brawl between the two of them that would be interrupted by the arrival of [[Mudslinger (G1)|Mudslinger]]. Because the lower jaw is unpainted it becomes almost invisible, giving Skullgrin the appearance of having no lower jaw at all.

:Unusually, his belt actually works like a belt, looping around the shell and fastening together. While this may be more realistic or may look better, it also means one needs to unfasten the belt every time one opens the shell. The shell is armed with the vibro-sword and the double gun.

* Bob Budiansky originally wrote Skullgrin's profile sometime in 1987, well before giving the character the spotlight in [[Monstercon from Mars!|issue #45]] of the Marvel Comic in mid-1988. When the [[Quintesson]]s escaped their dimensional prison, they arrived on [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]] in the year [[2050]], where they spotted and hoped to subdue the Dinobots to use as merchandise. Towards this goal, they summoned [[Predaking (G1)|Predaking]], who had the Dinobots on the ropes till Grimlock was encouraged by telepathic messages from the [[Primus|Oracle]] of the past universe to use [[Earth]]'s [[Angolmois Energy]] to manifest his heart's strength in reality. With this energy and the lending of an [[Energon Matrix]] from [[Kakuryu (G1)|Grimmaster]], Grimlock and the other four original Dinobots combined into the mighty Volcanicus. Predaking attempted to use [[Slash (POTP)|Slash]] as a hostage, but the [[Magma Blade (GS)|Magma Blade]]s-armed Volcanicus was nevertheless able to slash Predaking apart into his [[Predacon (G1)|Predacon]] components, who quickly retreated, and save his "little sister". Soon after, Volcanicus was contacted by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Spike Witwicky]] about the [[Selector]] revolt at [[Neo Scramble City]], so Volcanicus's components split up to go and assist their allies. {{storylink|Volcanicus comic 1}}

The Dinobots aided the humans against the [[Cybertron Alliance]] and Selectors because of their loyalty to Carly. The [[Technobot (G1)|Technobot]]s were also loyal to their father, Grimlock, and merged with him as a variant of Volcanicus called [[Volcaticon]]. The Quintessons intervened on the battle with anti-Transformer gas, and so Volcaticon deconstructed so that Grimlock could reform Volcanicus with the Dinobots while the Technobots assembled separately as [[Computron (G1)|Computron]]. {{Storylink|Volcanicus comic 2}}

Volcanicus and Computron soon realized they were at a disadvantage against the arriving [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcon]]s, though. Computron had restored Grimlock's super-intelligence when they merged as Volcaticon, and now lacked the accumulated knowledge necessary to feed his analytics. Meanwhile, the hyper-intelligent Grimlock inside Volcanicus lost his animal ferocity in this "improved" state. {{Storylink|Abominus comic 1}} Given a reprieve, Computron reabsorbed his intelligence from Volcanicus before engaging the Terrorcons' combiner, [[Abominus (G1)|Abominus]], but to no avail. [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] infused himself with Angolmois Energy to counter Abominus, only to be driven out of control himself. Volcanicus used the Angolmois in his Magma Blade to deflect the reformatted Megatron Omega's attack, teaming up with Abominus against him. Volcanicus and the Dinobots were used as pawns by Primus, knowing they could be easily directed against their old enemy and his rival, [[Primacron]]. As it turned out, the Dinobots didn't know ''how'' to work the Enigma.
