Both his truck and [[robot mode]] are based on his [[Don Figueroa]]-designed body from [[IDW Publishing|IDW]]'s [[The Transformers (IDW)|2009-2011 comic series]], and features [[5 mm post|5 mm-compatible]] hands and roof. He comes with an [[Ion blaster#Legends|Ion Blaster]] which has both 5mm and 3mm posts.

Like every ''Classics'' Optimus Prime mold, he still features all of his accessories. : Part of the first wave of ''Generations: [[Combiner Wars (toyline)|Combiner Wars]]'' Voyager Class toys, this is a bigger, bulkier incarnation of Optimus Prime with a striking resemblance to Ginrai. He comes with two blasters which he holds via 5 mm post. One of the guns is based on his trademark Ion Blaster, and both weapons store on the back of his vehicle mode as a makeshift engine block. His torso mode has several details that appear to be influenced by [[Optimus Prime (Armada)/toys#Energon|''Energon'' Optimus Prime]]'s super mode, including the head, chest, and thighs. In particular, the chest details are modeled after the [[Spark of Combination]]. He also features two pair of fake windows on his robot and gestalt chest halves. The combiner head can be used as a robot mode head if you're feeling silly.

:Optimus suffers from a design flaw that many other Voyager Class figures in the ''Combiner Wars'' line experience: the detents, or "click points", on the heavily-ratcheted outward motion of his hips (which also form the hips of his torso mode) are few in number and very far apart. As a result, Prime's legs have great difficulty assuming the natural "A-stance" formation that the angled design of his foot sculpt seems to have been meant to accommodate. Likewise, when forming the torso of Ultra Prime, the interactions of the knee-lock mechanism and the hip detents almost always force Ultra Prime's legs into either an awkwardly knock-kneed arrangement or an equally awkward, and often unstable, bow-legged posture (as seen in the image to the right) that prevents Ultra Prime from standing flat-footed. Unlike Motormaster, this version of Optimus was the only one to not receive the improved hip ratchets implemented in its future releases in some shape or form by Hasbro, though they would be used for the Battle Core redeco later in the line. If one wishes, the improved hip ratchets from a relevant release can be used to replace Prime's first edition ratchets to effectively fix him.

:Being a ''Combiner Wars'' Voyager, Prime is naturally capable of transforming into a torso mode to combine with any 4 Deluxe Class ''Combiner Wars''-style toys, though his packaging call-out has him form Ultra Prime by combining him with Deluxe Class [[Skydive (G1 Aerialbot)#Generations|Skydive]] and [[Alpha Bravo]] as the arms, and with [[Fireflight (G1)#Generations|Firefly]] and [[Drag Strip (G1)#Generations|Decepticon Drag Strip]] as the legs. He can combine with [[Sunstreaker (G1)/toys#Generations|Sunstreaker]], [[Mirage (G1)/toys#Combiner Wars|Mirage]], [[Prowl (G1)/toys#Generations|Prowl]], and [[Ironhide (G1)/toys#Combiner Wars|Ironhide]] if one wishes to have an IDW-accurate Optimus Maximus.

:Unfortunately, Optimus Prime is also the weakest link of the gestalt combination, due to a number of design failures attributed to his torso mode. The square holes-and-tabs used to secure the arms together when in torso mode are too weak to remain locked in place (though a very small amount of copies can secure the arm well), and are prone to falling out of position should an attached arm be moved. The torso mode's skirt plate is also attached to the stomach rather than the pelvis, rendering the waist swivel nearly worthless due to the skirt obstructing articulation.

:Though Optimus's wave was scheduled for a first quarter 2015 release, it arrived on U.S. store shelves in late 2014.

:"Battle Core Optimus Prime" is a white redeco and slight retool of the previous ''Combiner Wars'' Optimus figure. According to the Hasbro panel at [[BotCon 2015]], his new head is based on Star Convoy (see above). For some reason, his deco appears to be influenced by [[Nova Prime]].

:The figure features newly redesigned hip ratchets to make both robot and combiner mode stable, which were also installed in both TakaraTomy's [[Motormaster (G1)#Unite Warriors 2|Motormaster]], [[Grand Scourge#Toys|Grand Scourge]], and a revision wave of Hasbro's Motormaster. The pegs that Legends Class Rodimus (or Blackjack) attach to have also been slightly modified to provide a tighter fit, making the latter toy much less prone to falling out.

As with the original ''Cybertron'' figure, the barrel of the truck's left cannon can be detached and wielded by Prime as a rifle called the "JF-15 Gravity Force Laser." Care should be taken when handling the star and transforming Star Convoy to ensure it does not bump against other parts of the figure or experience undue stress, as it is molded from clear plastic coated in gold chrome. The stem of the star is particularly fragile and has been known to break without much force being applied to it.

This also means that, like the ''Siege'' toy, the truck mode is unusually small for a Voyager figure.

:For the first time for a non-''Masterpiece'' ''Generations'' toy, Optimus Prime comes with a trailer (which is also compatible with the ''Siege'' toy) that converts into a combat deck/repair bay with an artillery robot, which can be detached and used as a jetpack via a 5mm peg on the bottom. Awesome. He is also the first Voyager-sized figure with an opening chest compartment containing a removable [[Matrix of Leadership/toys#War for Cybertron: Earthrise|Matrix of Leadership]] accessory. In an undocumented feature, the Matrix is able to accommodate "Fire Blasts" from the Battle Masters assortment or attach to similarly sized posts such as the ones inside his trailer. His transformation scheme reuses some engineering and concepts from the ''Siege'' Voyager Class figures and ''[[Studio Series]]'' [[Optimus Prime (Movie)/toys#SS38|38 Optimus Prime]], with a new torso transformation. Interestingly, his rear wheels are borrowed from ''Studio Series'' [[Optimus Prime (Movie)/toys#SS32|32]] and [[Optimus Prime (Movie)/toys#SS44|44 Optimus Prime]]. Part of the trailer's ramp detaches to form a shield and can connect to other ramps in the [[A.I.R. Lock System]]. Like ''Siege'' Jetfire, Optimus Prime features a hinge joint in each of his knuckles but without the flip-out post hole mechanism, instead having it facilitated by the shape of his palm and thumb. Interestingly, the placement of his front wheels in robot mode evokes the [[Studio OX]] version of his character model (though significantly larger compared to the artwork). Optimus also has molded drilled-rotor brake discs, a surprising detail for a mainline ''Transformers'' figure.

:As the front grill/wheel piece is connected with a c-clip, removing it allows the waist to turn without being hindered. Whether by coincidence or not, the Energon Strikeshield from the ''Siege'' figure can attach onto the forearm (if the hands are tucked away) with the tabs on the axe's hinged handle. Also likely coincidental, the trailer's hitch post is at exactly the right height to let it rest inside the 5mm hole on [[Roller (G1)#Generations|''Thrilling 30'' Roller]] and can even be pulled along on flat surfaces with the tiny truck.

:Confusingly, the figure had many color differences in different official promotional images. The original 3D renders depicted his colors completely show-accurate to the G1 cartoon (minus the blue codpiece, and with quite rare toy-accurate yellow eyes), the lack of striping on the forearms/side doors, and a fully blue artillery robot for the trailer, while the pre-release prototype seen in New York Comic Con 2019 and the secondary stock photos had his hands and elbows molded in grey, with artillery robot being cast in grey and silver plastic similar to the rest of the trailer. According to [[John Warden]], this was due to the limitations of the mold. Even later, Takara's stock photos showed the figure with blue elbows and a blue and silver artillery robot. The retail release of the figure ultimately, for the most part, went with colors showcased in Hasbro's physical toy stock photos, but with previously yellow eyes now more cartoon-accurate blue, and with his hands, codpiece, and the back piece of his head painted in metallic blue. Early renders also displayed the figure's inner shins as being molded in the same blue color as the rest of the legs, although the final figure presents them cast in gray and unpainted. The sample on the TakaraTomy stock photos also depict his trailer hitch as a single piece.

:Unfortunately, the change from toy-accurate yellow eyes to cartoon-accurate blue clashes with the unpainted blue face, making it barely visible. The figure's head can be swapped with the head of the ''Siege'' figure (though the blue plastic is a slightly lighter shade) but it can cause some parts to clash while transforming, as the back of the ''Earthrise'' head is a new, flatter part. This is also why the part is a painted red piece, so exercise some caution while tucking away/flipping out the head while transforming. This can be avoided if you lift up the fully flipped-out torso panels, though.

:While the vestigial knee flaps were meant to be flipped out while transforming him into truck mode, the flaps' pegs and the elbow's rectangular holes had a slight issue of being held together, which results in the cab ''slightly'' tilted frontward (I mean ''very''). If the issue still persists, the vestigial knee flaps can be left untransformed to properly straighten the cab.

:Like all ''Earthrise'' toys, the inside of the back of Optimus's package includes an exclusive clip-and-save piece of a larger star map. Also in the box is a thin red piece of transparent plastic with which to read the star map. Optimus' piece of the map contains the labeled location of a planet called "[[Micro|MICRON]]".

:The non-converting long-barreled Ion Blaster, the Energon Axe, [[Sideswipe (G1)/toys#War for Cybertron: Siege|Sideswipe]]'s jetpack, and [[Roller (G1)#War for Cybertron Trilogy|Roller]] were sold separately as part of the ''War for Cybertron Trilogy'' [[Centurion droid#Toys|Deluxe Centurion Drone Weaponizer Pack]], though due to a section of Optimus' back being marginally wider than the space available, some force may be required to attach the jetpack fully. The Energon Axe is also specifically molded to fit onto Optimus' right hand, with the 5mm peg sliding into the bottom side of his hand. Although it can fit on his left hand if slid through the top, this puts noticeable stress on the axe's peg due to the thumb sliding up against the housing.

:The Combat Deck, including its artillery robot and shield/ramp, was redecoed for the ''War for Cybertron Trilogy'' [[Nemesis Prime (G1)#War for Cybertron Trilogy|Nemesis Prime's]] Spoiler Pack. The Optimus Prime mold was also used to make ''War for Cybertron Trilogy Selects'' [[Optimus Prime (SG)#War for Cybertron Trilogy|Shattered Glass Optimus Prime]].

Despite Barricade's worries, they took the station and obtained Dark Energon. Following tests, Barricade asked Soundwave what happened to the failed test subjects, but Soundwave's reply didn't reassure him. He reluctantly submitted to an infusion of Dark Energon at Soundwave's hands.

Starscream discovered the existence of the Energon Bridge, which they could use to repower Trypticon station, but they would need all of the Dark Energon they had left to reach and reactivate it. Barricade was skeptical that they should risk everything on Starscream's word, but went along with the plan anyway. They reactivated the Energon Bridge, but the Autobots severed the link to the core, and secured it with the Omega Key. As the Decepticons attempted to track the Key down, Barricade expressed doubt that anyone would follow Starscream, but the Air Commander was convinced his time would come.

They found the key, but to Barricade's alarm, it merely activated Omega Supreme, who kicked all of the Decepticons out of Iacon. Barricade was convinced they should retreat, but at Megatron's urging, the Decepticons moved forward and managed to defeat the giant. :Unicron from the [[Transformers: Armada (toyline)|''Armada'' toyline]] is an orange and transparent purple Supreme-size toy that transforms into a planet. It features many [[Mini-Con]] [[Powerlinx]] plugs on the planet's rings, and "chomping" jaws activated by moving the mandibles. The packed-in Mini-Con Dead End in moon-mode plugs into a specially shaped socket on Unicron's planet form, just above his gaping maw. Powerlinx plugs on his sides activate the triple spring-loaded missile launchers, which end up on his robot mode legs. In robot mode, he has hidden compartments for Mini-Cons in his robot-mode legs and abdomen. One Powerlinx plug on the back of the robot mode activates blinking eye lights and a cannon that bursts from the chest and shoots a missile. A button on the top of the head also activates the blinking eye lights. Pushing his right hand back slightly into the cuff causes it to light up.

:In total, the toy can hold up to 27 Mini-Cons in planet mode and 30 in robot mode—35 if you count the two cavities in his forearms, Dead End's indent on the planet shells and if a Mini-Con is stored in the compartment on each leg. 24 of the Powerlinx points are situated on his wings/planet ring.

:Attaching the full capacity of Mini-Cons can easily add a whole pound to Unicron's weight (varying slightly by the choice of Mini-Cons used of course). Since Unicron alone is one of the heaviest Transformers figures ever made, one can imagine how bulky he gets.

Unfortunately, one of the flaps takes some fiddling to flip, and the author of the instructions expected them to be packaged flipped-in so Unicron could immediately connect to his stand, but most specimens were not found that way, making the average unboxing experience frustrating. The final page of the instruction book, read in reverse order, shows how to flip this flap and fix this problem.
