Something to consider: This act of swiping and recycling may have been necessary to speed up the drawing process in order to complete the series in time for publication before being cut off due to Dreamwave's inevitable demise.

Yeah, Dreamwave folded in early 2005 and the final issue of Jae Lee's work was published in March 2004, which means it was completed before that, so I call B.S.
