In the closing days of the 20th Century, Autobots and humans unite to cross the final frontier, only to find the Decepticons standing in their way.
Synopsis
[edit]Amid great pomp and pageantry, a delegation of Autobots led by Optimus Prime appear on American television in order to announce their formal alliance with the country's government. While Wheeljack and Ratchet congratulate themselves on the speech they have written for Prime and Hound and Bumblebee lap up the public adulation, Prime addresses the crowd and takes questions. Upon the inquiry of a reporter, Prime tells the crowd about the Trigger, an interplanetary teleport system created from a combination of human and Cybertronian technology currently being built in Earth orbit.
Three days later, as a four-man crew works on the final stages of the Trigger's construction, crewman Makoto is particularly excited, as he has been a fan of the Autobots since his childhood. Makoto doesn't take kindly to fellow crew member Trov's joking claim that the Autobots are secretly scheming to take over Earth, but soon forgets all about it when Anya and Flegg, in the process of conducting extra-vehicular activity in one-man maintenance crafts, inform him that a group of Autobots will be arriving on the station for a test of the system in a few days. Makoto's elation is cut short, however, when a shuttle suddenly appears on the Trigger's radar, heading for the station. When a pair of jets deploys from within the shuttle, this impossible sight makes Makoto believe that it must be the Autobots, but he realizes his mistake when the jets open fire on the Trigger, blowing up the maintenance pods and killing Flegg and Anya. The Decepticons have arrived, and from within the shuttle—actually Astrotrain—Megatron and the rest of the villains emerge. The panicked Makoto turns to Trov, only to find that his supposed friend is pointing a gun in Makoto's face, revealing that he is, in fact, the agent of a foreign power intent on foiling America's alliance with the Autobots and preventing the country from "monopolizing the Earth". Makoto rushes Trov and makes his shot go wild, but Trov lands a haymaker on Makoto, knocking him out cold.
Apparently believing Makoto dead, Trov heads down to the "barrel" of the Trigger, where he welcomes Megatron and the Decepticons aboard. He announces that his country will subjugate America and reign over Earth from space with the Decepticons as their brothers, but after a moment of silence, Megatron corrects him: he has no interest in ruling the Earth, merely in sucking it dry. As realization dawns on the horrified Trov, Megatron fires a single blast from his fusion cannon, and Trov is reduced to atoms.
As this grisly scene plays out, Makoto regains consciousness and observes Trov's death over a viewscreen. The Decepticons set about activating the Trigger and opening a warp gate to Cybertron, but before they lock in the co-ordinates for the planet, Makoto quickly springs into action, overriding their control from his position in the main control room. He activates the Trigger's electromagnetic rail launching system and blasts the evil robots down the Trigger's barrel, where the warp gate will teleport them to a random location in the far reaches of the galaxy. Megatron screams in defiance and opens fire on the warp gate, successfully knocking it offline just before Starscream passes through the portal. Megatron immediately seeks revenge for this insult and peers at Makoto through the control room window, reaching up one finger to finish the human off. Before he shatters the glass, however, the streaking red form of Optimus Prime comes speeding across the surface of the Trigger, transforming and striking the Decepticon leader with a devastating punch. As Makoto watches, the rest of the Autobot forces spill out of Omega Supreme, and the two factions clash in a mighty space battle.
After the Autobots rout the Decepticons, Prime explains to Makoto that the Autobots had come to a decision in conjunction with the American military not to reveal the existence of the Decepticons to the world at large. Makoto thanks them for saving his life, and expresses his desire to work with the Autobots and lend them his strength as best he can...but even as he finishes his impassioned speech, he realizes how ridiculous the idea of humans fighting in their war must sound to the giant robots. Optimus Prime, however, thanks Makoto, and tells him that they are very much in need of the strength of humans, and the pair shakes hands.
With the existence of the Decepticons officially revealed to humanity, the united Autobot-American forces announce their intent to respond to the Decepticon threat with a combined military offensive.

[edit]- Although The Battle of the Star Gate is officially considered part of Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity, it contains one fairly major gaffe: we are asked to believe that humanity in general does not know about the existence of the Decepticons, which is extremely hard to swallow after their numerous public displays throughout the original The Transformers cartoon. The manga's climax is oddly staged in such a way as to suggest that the reader should not really be aware of this fact either, consisting as it does of a super-dramatic two-page sequence in which Makoto gradually reveals to the reader a "truth" that he has realized…only for that truth, revealed in GIANT LETTERS running the full height of the page to be…that there are two factions of Transformers who are at war. Umm.
- Astrotrain does not size change in this story. Instead, he is simply gigantic in both shuttle and robot modes.
