Following the battle for energy on planet Energoa (in reality, prehistoric Earth), Maximal Commander Optimus Primal was destroyed by a trap created by Predacon Commander Megatron and the entire planet has been bathed in a Quantum Surge. The energy from this explosion has altered all the Transformers into super soldiers called "Transmetals". With no time to spare, Megatron has launched a counter-attack against the weakened Maximals.
Inside, Rattrap is totally freaking out, observing that Sentinel's power supply has dwindled to 10%, ground forces are expected to breach the perimeter in 15 cycles and overall Maximal life-expectantcy is at 0%. With Optimus Primal dead for sure and Airazor, Tigatron, Cheetor, Silverbolt and Dinobot missing, Rattrap resorts to his favorite catchphrase: "We're all gonna die!"
Rhinox reminds him that things aren't all bad and that if he finishes the project he's working on, they might have a 1% chance of survival.
Suddenly, Transmetal Airazor appears outside the base, under fire from Sentinel. Rhinox rushes to turn Sentinel off, only to be stopped by Rattrap, who exclaims that if they shut Sentinel down, the Predacons will get in. Rhinox screams at Rattrap, telling him that Maximals never desert their own, that it wasn't Primal's way. Rhinox shuts Sentinel down, and the injured Airazor comes in for a crash-landing.
Oooooooooh, FREAKOUT!
Feeling a twinge of guilt, Rattrap dives to the floor and cushions her landing (for which she is grateful). Though injured, Airazor reports that she's still functional, but is saddened over Primal's demise.
At the Predacon base (a floating volcanic island named Hindenburg), Megatron has succeeded in resurrecting Primal's sparkless body. Several drones struggle to keep the rampaging, mindless beast in chains, but are hurled about. Megatron then takes control and violently subdues the beast, strangling it with the chains. Megatron then announces his plans to use the mindless Primal to destroy the Maximals as Tarantulas and an army of drones cheer him on.
At the Maximal base, Rattrap and Airazor are waxing nostalgic over a hologram of happier times, showing all the Maximals in beast mode palling around with a banana-eating Optimus Primal. Airazor becomes sad at the sight of Tigatron. Rhinox then announces that he has completed his device: a gun-like weapon.
Things go from bad to hopeless when Blackarachnia slips by the weakened Sentinel and drops in from the top of the dome. She "disarms" Rattrap (literally ninja-kicking his arm off) and grabs Airazor by the throat, bodyslamming her. She then confronts Rhinox, telling him to put his "gun" away, sticking her own weapon in his face. Rhinox does her one better, grabbing his "gun" and using it to blow a hole in his head.
Confused, Blackarachnia exits the dome and confronts Quickstrike. Quickstrike begins to berate her for performing so poorly, only to find himself decapitated by a kick. Quickstrike's head sobs as his body wanders around aimlessly.
Wait, how do you slice with a mace?
As Blackarachnia leaves, the dome falls to pieces, though the bridge is stabilized by a small force field and Rhinox's strange device. There seems to be more to Rhinox's plan than suicide, as his now departed spark travels into transwarp space to find Optimus Primal's essence. Rhinox finds Primal's spark being dragged down into a pit by a horde of monsters. Rhinox attempts to rescue him, but Primal simply wants to move on to his final reward. Rhinox ain't havin' that, and he decks Primal in the face for going against his own code (leaving Maximals to die).
Primal snaps out of it and, along with Rhinox, races back to reality. Meanwhile, Rattrap readies a ray device while Airazor, in falcon mode, positions a satellite dish.
Back at Hindenburg, Megatron is performing some wacky voodoo ceremony (complete with boiling kettle). By drawing blood from his thumb, Megatron will take total control of Primal's mindless body. While this is happening, Primal's spark exits transwarp Space via Rattrap's ray, bounces off Airazor's dish and connects with his old body before Megatron can finish the ceremony. The blast upgrades Primal's body into a Transmetal.
Tarantulas is overjoyed, believing that the ceremony he coordinated was a success. Not quite: Primal angrily decapitates him with his bare hands. Still wounded, Airazor falls to the earth, only to be caught by Primal. Megatron is upset that the plan failed and orders his drone warriors to attack. Primal defeats them with ease and even slices Transmetal Terrorsaur neatly in two on the way out.
Megatron attacks, taking the advantage as Primal is burdened with Airazor. Primal tosses Airazor into the air and defeats Megatron, and everything explodes. Victorious, Primal carries Airazor off on his surfboard as she laments over her missing "Tigatron-sama". As Rhinox and Rattrap celebrate a job well done, Tigatron, Cheetor, Silverbolt and Dinobot stare poetically at the Moon from different locations all over the planet.
The Beast Wars Metals manga follows a similar but different version of the events of the first season of the Beast Wars cartoon. In this version of the events, Silverbolt was already an active member of the Maximals, Quickstrike was already a member of the Predacons, Terrorsaur was not killed during the explosion (though he didn't last much longer, here), the Predacons have a seemingly limitless quantity of drone warriors and both factions are situated in completely new bases.
While Airazor was made male for the dub of the Beast Wars cartoon in Japan, she is presented as a female here. This was likely done because her Transmetal toy had an indisputably feminine build.
Though not named in the actual comic, according to concept art sketches by Imaki, the spark-less, zombified body of Optimus Primal was called Devil Gorilla (デビルゴリラ).
