Many years ago, Grindcore was a member of [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus's]] [[Science Division]], working on [[excavation site LT34]] near the [[Simfur Temple|temple]] of [[Simfur]]. He was present when the team excavated an ancient relic and for the subsequent argument between Optimus and Protector [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. Soon after, [[Ejoornian|strange aliens]] from the [[Eshems Nebula]] attacked, reducing much of [[Metrotitan (ROTF)|Metrotitan]] to rubble. {{storylink|Defiance issue 1|Defiance #1}} In the aftermath, he was present at a meeting called by Optimus, who explained Megatron's demand for compulsory military service and a new mission of war against all of Cybertron's enemies. Grindcore heeded Optimus's warning and kept out of Megatron's personal war. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 2|Defiance #2}} 

As the situation worsened, Grindcore was in charge of the [[Burthov]] launch site, removing debris from the earlier battle. However, Optimus' followers were soon branded traitors and civil war erupted across Cybertron. {{storylink|Defiance issue 3|Defiance #3}} Grindcore joined Optimus ''Prime''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s Autobots and was one of those who elected to stay behind while the Autobot ship ''[[Ark (Movie)|Ark]]'' pursued the [[AllSpark]], which had been cast into space in a desperate attempt to buy the Autobots some time. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 4|Defiance #4}}

Grindcore, along with [[Warpath (Movie)|Warpath]], [[Signal Flare (Movie)|Signal Flare]], and [[Elita-One (Movie)|Elita-One]], was captured during a raid and put to work by [[Stockade (Movie)|Stockade]] to construct [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]]'s [[replica AllSpark]] at [[Simfur]]. While constructing it, Grindcore collapsed from exhaustion and was unsuccessfully defended from a pair of [[Payload (Movie)|Payload]] drones by Warpath. Upon the new AllSpark's completion, he was strapped to it, with the intention of draining his life-force to power the cube. {{storylink|The Reign of Starscream issue 4|The Reign of Starscream #4}}

Grindcore was a specialist working under [[Camshaft (Movie)|Camshaft]], investigating and trying to stop [[Earth]]'s AllSpark-caused death. With the team running low on [[Magna-cap|magna-caps]] to stop raw [[energon]] seams from gushing, Grindcore was ordered to assist by burying the caps in rubble. To configure him into attack mode, one flips up the rear wheels (there are smaller wheels to support the rear end of the vehicle to compensate), inserts the Cyber Key into the wheel-hub slots and twists, deploying blades around the circumference of each tire.
