What is known is that [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime's]] cosmotron was severely damaged during [[Divide and Conquer|a battle]] with the [[Decepticon]]s, and the [[Autobot]] leader surely would have perished if his cosmotron had not been replaced, suggesting that whatever purpose it serves is a vital one.

==Trivia==
The real-life Brookhaven National Laboratory once had a particle accelerator called the "Cosmotron".  It was the first atom smasher able to reach energies of a billion electron volts, and was dismantled in 1966.
