In the cartoon continuity, how did Cobra managed to be there in 2006 as he was transformed into a snake in the 80's?

:A lot of characters have been known as Snake over the years, for many different and totally unrelated series.  And since the character is getting old, calling him Old Snake, makes since.  Is there somewhere in the game where it looks like Cobra Commander is involved?  I Googled briefly, but don't see anything mentioned anywhere.
