The Joes eventually managed to pinpoint [[Cobra Island\|Cobra’s base of operations]] thanks to the help of two Cybertronians not under their control, [[Wheeljack (G1)\|Wheeljack]] and [[Bumblebee (G1)\|Bumblebee]]. Seeing the opportunity to not only wipe out Cobra but also seize advanced alien technology, the generals decided to nuke Cobra Island and have the two Cybertronians in their “possession” taken to [[Area 51]] for disassembly. [[Hawk (G.I. Joe)\|General Abernathy]] was initially going to go through with these orders, but when he learned that an [[energon]] stockpile would react violently to the nuclear blast, covering half the globe in nuclear winter, he defied orders and took Wheeljack and Bumblebee out to rescue their fellow Autobots and stop the bomb. {{storylink\|G.I.
