As the origins of the Transformers were revisited in the United States, Simon Furman introduced in "The Primal Scream" a "blue and yellow" Matrix Wielder created by Primus to fight Unicron, with fans interpreting this bot to be one of the first Transformers created. Four issues later, a quote from the Creation Matrix (seen at the top of this page) established a lineage of Matrix Wielders beginning with "Prima" as the first Transformer after Primus. Thus, fans concluded that the "blue and yellow" bot they had seen in "The Primal Scream" was Prima, while the gold Autobot seen in "The Legacy of Unicron" was Sentinel. </del>

2004's Transformers: The Ultimate Guide declared Prima to be one of the "Thirteen Original Transformers" alongside Liege Maximo and The Fallen. The Ultimate Guides page on Cybertron depicted images from the G2 comics and identified the "purple and yellow" bot as Prima, retroactively making the blue/yellow <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Transformer </ins>and purple/yellow <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Transformer </ins>the same character. Prima's role as a member of an ancient pantheon, a "First Transformer", and an early Matrix Wielder, were now firmly established, with his predecessors in both the cartoon and "Reaching the Omega Point" being ignored, save for another retcon from The AllSpark Almanac II, which merged "Primon" and the "Ancient Robot" into one individual.

The issue never depicted this "First Transformer" being a Matrix Wielder, nor did it suggest that this character was the same one seen in "The Primal Scream". Prima's placement among the Matrix Wielders would be further muddled by the 1999 story "Reaching the Omega Point" - which established a character called Primon as the first one to hold the Matrix, not Prima. </ins>

Simon Furman's non-answer in an interview, claiming "The Matrix forgot", did little to mend this continuity error. </ins>

When the war against Unicron was in stalemate, Primus created the first Transformer: Prima (aka Prima Prime). Appointed by his creator as a "Warrior of Light", Prima wields the legendary Star Saber sword into battle with his fellow stewards of Primus' planetary form, Cybertron. His nature often brings him into conflict with his opposite, fueling tensions that eventually explode into the War of the Primes. Eventually, Prima's Matrix of Leadership, once attached to the Star Saber's hilt, is relinquished and passed down to his eventual successor (and sometimes fellow member of the Thirteen): the Thirteenth Prime.

It is uncertain what relationship Prima has, if any, to Primon, another early Matrix bearer.

{{quote|We are Primus. We are Prima.
Conceptual History
The history of Prima's development is one full of brief appearances, retcons, and corporate efforts to establish key roles for each member of the Thirteen.

His story begins not as Prima, but as a "Powerful Robot" in the Sunbow cartoon's third season premiere, the five-episode arc Five Faces of Darkness. Created by the Quintessons, the "Powerful Robot" became an instigator of the Autobot Rebellion, only to be killed. This bot would be one of many Matrix Wielders seen by Rodimus Prime in the present-day of the cartoon. A few years later, the Marvel Comics continuity writer Simon Furman would introduce a bot created as the "First Transformer", who also wielded the Creation Matrix to protect Cybertron from Unicron. Four issues later, this bot would be properly introduced as Prima, solidifying the character's basic traits as a Matrix Wielder, "First Transformer", and warrior.

Prima would be forgotten for over a decade until 2004's Transformers: The Ultimate Guide brought together several of Simon Furman's creations (including Liege Maximo and The Fallen) as members of the "Thirteen Original Transformers", who battled Unicron. The character would be forgotten again until 2010, when Hasbro reintroduced him as part of the definitive Covenant roster of the Thirteen with new concept art drawn by Ken Christiansen for Hasbro's new brand bible in 2010. Prima's main artifact would become a new incarnation of the Star Saber, which had been introduced as a Mini-Con weapon in Armada, with the Matrix being placed in its hilt.. Prima's personality would be fleshed out in 2013's The Covenant of Primus, establishing him as a noble warrior focused on establishing order and civilization, in contrast to the chaos he saw within Megatronus and Liege Maximo. Prima and Megatronus would clash often, with their feud playing a role in the skirmishes that took place in the War of the Primes. This feud would inform future characterizations of Prima in the 2005 IDW continuity and Ask Vector Prime.

With the "definitive" incarnation of Prima established, the 2010s would see a few retcons for Prima. The AllSpark Almanac II would retroactively declare the "Powerful Robot", previously considered a separate character, to be Prima. It would later be retconned that one of the Primes in Revenge of the Fallen was also Prima. Meanwhile, the Power of the Primes and Age of the Primes toylines would give Prima a new title, "Warrior of Light", while Age of the Primes and the Transformers One film would rename him as Prima Prime.

Note Concerning Main Picture
:Just as The Fallen's main picture is being discussed being changed into the AOTP concept art design, we could consider changing Prima's main page into his AOTP concept art design - provided we can find a clean enough version without text over it. I'm not saying we should change it because it's the most recent design, but rather because it combines his "Powerful Robot" design with his "Aligned" design, serving as a more continuity-agnostic version. I think using AOTP pictures should only apply to Prima, The Fallen, maybe Alpha Trion, and maybe Liege Maximo, but the latter two will depend on what their toy designs look like.
